I went from a borderline obsession with Aemond Targaryen, to reopening a dormant obsession with the 2004 film Alexander (criminally underrated but we move) to a reignited obsession with Shadowhunters which never really died out just fizzled but is now taking up all of my brain function in a day. Theyre all existing in tandem and it’s a lot. I don’t know what hyper fixation crisis I’m having at the moment but I’m getting my head/ mental health tested/evaluated in May so hopefully the undiagnosed ADHD among other things gets professionally addressed
Thanks for coming to my Ted talk

reading fire and blood and i need you to know at some point during his reign aegon was commissioning the stonemasons to build like 50 foot statues of aemond and daeron. like it’s batshit but it’s love
westeros is a different world from ours, huge statues of political figures is literally unheard of there. and statues are expensive; they take time, and men, and money, all of which are precious commodities in the midst of a war. as i've now discussed here, aegon ordered for these statues to be the biggest ever crafted. well over 50 feet tall, more like four hundred.
and aegon is out here, alone, diverting resources away from a literal war, going against cultural standards, all because he wants to remember his brothers. all because he loves them, and doesn't know what to do with that love once they're gone.
this is an alexander the great with hephaestion level of mourning; an achilles with patroclus level of grief. their love is the stuff of mythology. do you understand now why i am so feral about them????

All For The Motherland (Aemond x Reader)
Tumblr media
This was requested by the brilliant @arkainea it was such a great request and I had so much fun writing it. Also I would suggest listening to Alexander rybak fairytale. Enjoy
Tumblr media
Tales of the far dark lands of the mossovy world were whispered among all of Westeros, some mothers would even make up stories of demons of the mossovy that traveled in the night to capture naughty children or the ones that did not sleep to get their toddlers to bed.
Not even the wisest of maesters could speak with certainty of what occupied that part of the land, to be frank, they also did not intend to find out any time soon, it was easier to say that it was demonic creatures and shapeshifters that ate souls of the innocent.
But, every story has two sides. Mossovy, the matriarch kingdom, was ruled by women and occupied by them entirely, the witches protected the kingdom with spells and did not care to join the mess that was Westeros.
Until (y/n) was born, the daughter of the queen, the labor was quite the event as the women held the queens' hands while a witch lost in her trance waited patiently for the babe, all it could be heard was the queens' grunts of pain and the witch’s mumbling as the ancestors whispered in her ears.
“The princess of the dark, the conqueror of the west has arrived my queen”
(Y/n) had managed to send shivers down the women’s spine ever since she was born, one cry is all it took for the palace windows to shatter, the babe would only sleep during the morning, while her red hues were open all night.
Her mother loved her, yet (y/n) could identify the fear upon her mother's gaze early, the only one that truly loved (y/n) was the witch that whispered the prophecy when she was brought into this world, the woman that blessed her when she cut the cord, the woman that had seen the babes future the second she held her.
“Do I truly have to go?”
“You were born to make Mossovy proud, you are destined to rule, and to do that you must ride west, I will be with you every step of the way, and soon enough you will come back to us as the queen of all the kingdoms”
The eldest witch promised before she placed a motherly kiss on the young one's forehead, (y/n) had been pressured into keeping a low profile for so long, cast aside while everyone frowned upon her power, if the elders' words held the truth, (y/n) would be content.
-
The Targaryen family had just sat down to break their fast when news arrived of giant birds circling their castle, a frightened knight had alerted the royal family about a crow, a hawk, an owl, a vulture, and an eagle landing in front of the red keep, their riders demanding an audience with the king and queen.
(Y/n) walked into the throne room with her and held her high while her guards stayed close to her, everyone’s eyebrows raised at the presence of the young woman, they had no clue who she was and where she came from. Still, she looked like a queen as she stopped in front of king Viserys who sat on the iron throne.
“Your grace, it is a pleasure to finally meet you”
“I could say the same, my lady, if I knew who you are”
“(Y/n) odwin, we rode for two days from our homeland, I am sure you have heard of Mossovy”
Mutter coming from the court that was present took over her ears. The mysterious veil was finally lifted and what was behind it left them terrified, a smirk decorated her lips while her eyes pierced through the old king.
The house odwin ruled Mossovy for as long as anyone remembered, the history of women running away from slavery or any type of abuse and making a home as far as humanly possible, their words revealed everything that should be said
“All for the motherland”
They worshipped Mother Nature who blessed them with the gift of magic, they found power in witchcraft, it protected their daughters, it kept them healthy and barely touched by the hand of time.
(Y/n) guessed that technically she was older than the king, a man that was barely keeping his eyes open from the illness, if he could make it back to her homeland the witches would probably be able to nurture him back to health.
“Mossovy? You must have me for a fool if you even thought I would believe such lies”
“Why would I lie about it? I believe you wish I lied perhaps of the way we chose to step back and did not take any part in the pointless wars you have created to kill one another, understandably so a certain unwarranted cruelty is expected from your kind”
“My kind?”
“Mankind your grace”
“You are overstepping young lady”
“It’s the princess (y/n) and I am not overstepping anything, you called me a liar so I defended my own”
She relished this moment, to oppose a supposed king that looks so frail and defeated by a plague, yet he thought because his bum warmed a seat made of iron swords made him invincible and demanded respect. She wanted to laugh at him, belittle him, though her upbringing forbade such antics until it was necessary.
“If you are from the land of Mossovy, what are you doing here?”
“We want an alliance, there has been a plethora of attempted invasions recently and it is time to end this once and for all”
“I have not commanded any of my scouts to travel to your land, are you certain of those events or is it just a mere misunderstanding on your end?”
“the invaders came from Essos, they did not go far thankfully our army is strong, and we have managed to protect our own yet we must admit that the enemy is getting stronger as years go by, it will certainly help if we also had your muscle brains of men”
“Enlighten me, young princess, why should we align ourselves with your kingdom? All we know of you is that you came in flying on humongous birds and that your land is the home for demons”
“I am well aware of the hushed tales that have been whispered for my home and I do not blame you, women who unapologetically took authority and simply act the way the opposite gender has assumed that it should act, the only demonic act that we have committed is that we are women”
Viserys was in a tough spot, he had named his daughter as heir which was scandalous, leaving her in a position that could cause a stir, the young woman that stood before him spoke of a land that was run entirely by females, a matriarch kingdom that had managed to stay hidden for centuries.
He was not getting any younger, once he passed an alliance with such land could be extremely useful for Rhaenyra, to already show a land that prevailed under the hand of a woman could back her claim.
“Very well, I only have one condition”
“Which is?”
“You bend the knee to my daughter, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, my heir”
“I would be delighted to pay my respects to the future queen, I cannot wait to meet her”
-
(Y/n) grew fond of the kingdom, specifically, she was intrigued by their dragons, such marvelous creatures and what was even better was that she realised that they were summoned by magic, the act that the king now frowned upon was what brought him to power.
She had wished to go out for a stroll around the premises when the sound of steel clashing made her ears perk up. Her eyes shifted towards that direction while her legs guided her closer to the circle of people, soon enough she discovered prince Aemond part taking in a duel with one of the kings guards, the men danced around one another, it was quite a sight of you were incompetent in battle, his movements were shifted enough but not as clean to get him out of a battlefield alive.
The crowd cheered for the one-eyed prince who had managed to disarm the guard, what interrupted the moment of applause was (y/n)s meek giggle, “amateurs” she thought.
“Princess (y/n), would you like to share what was it exactly that amused you”
“You, my prince”
“Me?”
“It was a nice effort I am not going to lie but I do believe you are in desperate need of a better coach”
Once again the people spoke under their breaths, not of what she said but most of who she was, a mere foreigner that spoke ill of the princes and the guards' skills in sparring.
“Really? Go on then princess, pick a sword”
“Prince Aemond I think the princess was just jesting”
“I was not, on the contrary, I would love to part take in this adorable training session”
She opposed it, she had chosen to cover herself with a thick cape that was now on the ground, Aemond observed (y/n)s arms, scattered wounds from scars decorated her skin, and her long hair resembled a horse, long, thick, and beautiful.
(Y/n) twirled the sword with her fingers, her ruby eyes sparkling at the idea of a challenge, she looked like a creature from another world.
Aemonds interest had peaked in (y/n) ever since she went against his father, the ever-defiant princess let the king have a piece of her mind, she was fearless, so how could he not want to know more?
“Do not worry Ser, I will go easy on him”
“Is that so? Well then, let’s see which one will have to swallow back their words or pride after we are done with this”
“Sounds promising”
There was a moment of silence, you could hear a pin drop until Aemond went for the first jab that left (y/n) unfazed, her sword collided with his and forced him to take a step back due to her position switching smoothly from defense to offense, the princess had been yielding a sword since the young age of 4, archery was her favorite but a sword fight was more intimate, to be able to see the fear on her opponents' eyes as he was slowly losing his leverage, a priceless moment.
“You must be quicker than that”
She teased him before she disarmed him, with a grunt Aemond released the clutch he had on his sword the edge of (y/n)s weapon rested on the side of his neck, Aemond panted still he did not break eye contact, and neither did she.
“I must say princess, I have never met someone like you”
“Good, she would have probably taken your head already, however, I do not want to stain my attire so I will leave you to it”
She smiled at him before she left the sword back in its place and retrieved her cape. With her back turned to him he recalled the first night she had stayed, oh that eventful night that turned his life around forever, she had earned the nickname of “princess of the night” around the castle but Aemond felt like she brought to light in his life.
The pain from his eye injury would often leave him restless, he had grown tired of it and went out for a walk. That is when he saw her, she whispered something that sounded like nonsense to him with her head looking up at the sky, he was about to brush it off as the princess was just mad when he saw the dark mist appearing from the sky and had started to circle her.
Instinctively he went over to the side so he can remain hidden while he spied on her, the most had almost engulfed her when she turned around, her eyes were open however she was not looking at something specific, it almost looked like she had gone blind, her eyes were completely red, no white, no black, just a coat of red, she appeared to be inhaling the mist while the whispering continued.
He should have been scared, and ran away to call for guards and take her to the dungeons for her dark magic, however, he stood still, and he allowed her to continue without intruding.
“Amazing”
He mumbled to himself, astonished with what his eyes beheld like she commanded the world to spin, she was commanding the sky itself to engulf her, she wasn’t asking for darkness, she was the darkness.
The mist after a while started to dissolve and her eyes would slowly fade back to what they usually looked like, still, her hues were of dark burgundy, and now they were leaning towards the image of a fireplace, licks of a flame danced around her jewels she called eyes, her hair fell like traces framing her face, her skin blistering under the moonlight, she was a creature of the night, the mystery of the black coat painting across the sky became her.
Aemond thought he had gone unnoticed, he could not have been more wrong. (Y/n) picked up on his pacing from a mile away, the whispers of her ancestors warned her of whom it was, she chose to ignore him, let him become a mere observant of her craft, although she allowed it to scare him off, thinking that the prince would run with his tail between his legs and let everyone know of what he saw.
Aemond surprised her, the man was of course taken aback by the incident but the result wasn’t what she made it to be, he was even more interested in the princess. She was a worthy opponent, someone that left him guessing, an untouchable royal from the unknown that could make anyone tremble with just one sentence, she is everything Aemond aspired to be.
“She will be mine”
“Whom are you referring to?”
She loudly questioned startling Aemond. After the first wave of shock, he managed to smoothly recover and come out of his hiding spot to face her.
There she stood, the princess of Mossovy, the powerful witch, a woman that was one of a kind. Aemond gulped the knot that had formed in his throat before he took just one step closer to her.
“You, princess”
“Me? I will be yours? You have a wonderful sense of humor”
(Y/n) chuckled at the declaration of the prince. Aemonds ego was severely bruised at her initial response, ever since his eyes incident he had desperately made the effort to improve his confidence, truly a woman laughing at his vulnerability was making his work crumble beneath her feet.
“Do you honestly think I am looking for a husband? Someone that will parade me around while I am young and breed me until I give him a son and after all my tough labor of being a “dutiful wife” I will be cast aside while he indulges in whores? I would rather eat my own heart”
Aemond lost his composure, how dare she assume he would be like that? He was a man of honor, a man that scoffed at such low-life antics, for so long his bed was empty, and would turn his back when his brother asked him to accompany him to flea bottom.
As (y/n) kept snickering Aemond took the advantage to catch her off guard and with a few big steps he was chest to chest with her, his fingers latching around her bicep to gain (y/n)s attention and cut her amusement short.
“I would worship you, you mustn’t be as witty as you consider yourself to be if you believe that once I get the chance to have you I would not take tremendous pleasure in spending every waking moment just admiring you, loving you, basking in your presence, you are the fire that burns inside, the ocean that soothes my burning ache”
“That is kind of you to say, except that it is just words, words are just a mass of air that forms into a sound for a mere second before it disappears. If you truly feel those things you claim, then act like it”
She challenged him, it was at that point that they both noticed how their chests brushed against one another, how they were only one breath away from the lips of the other, his stronghold only grew tighter as a way to restrain himself from doing something that his mother would frown upon.
The only time Aemond broke eye contact with (y/n) was when his gaze fell to her lips, those soft, pink lips that had tortured his brain from morning to night, if he just barely leaned in he could taste them, still, something held him back.
“You are breathing heavily my prince, what seems to be the matter?”
“Cast a spell on me, make me forget you, that is the only way I could live in peace, you have taken over my body like a demon, and I slowly find myself being pulled out of my schedule while my soul yearns for you or was in the rings of seven hells? Was my dull and grim life just a miserable way to exist and every you strolled in you plastered some color on my canvas? I do not know if your existence in my life is a gift or a curse”
“Isn’t that the beauty of it all? To be so mindfully present in the moment that you jump out of character for the one that you crave? To live and die for your other half?”

Rhaenyra’s seclusion and grief over Luke’s death and her absence from her own war council is blamed for Rhaenys flying to Rook’s Nest alone and getting killed. The narrative even accentuates how detrimental Rhaenyra’s absence might have been to her own war efforts in having Corlys blame her for Rhaenys’ death, and again in having Jace recruit dragonseeds to increase the Blacks’s draconic power at a time when one of their dragonriders is indisposed. I don’t get why Martin uses a mother’s grief so often as a convenient plot device to force passivity, silence and absence on his female characters to fit the requirements of the plot, why it’s always the women who break down, rend their garments and retreat from public life, whereas men react to similar tragedies with anger, pursuit of vengeance and singular political focus.
*EDITED POST* (4/5/24)
I think it's important to identify when it is the maester or GRRM creating which messages to what audiences when it comes to Fire and Blood specifically. Because this is a frame narrative with an unreliable narrator. We have to remember that Gyldayn--a maester who's taking 100yr old anecdotes from people with their own conflicting agendas or inheritances of information--is both writing in hindsight of the effects of the Dance and is of the mind, like many others, that female rulership is bad. F&B is supposed to paint female rulership as bad.
BUT...
A)
You: "The narrative even accentuates how detrimental Rhaenyra’s absence might have been to her own war efforts in having Corlys blame her for Rhaenys’ death, and again in having Jace recruit dragonseeds to increase the Blacks’s draconic power at a time when one of their dragonriders is indisposed."
Watsonian Answer
Rhaenyra was recovering from a stillbirth (Visenya). She'd be putting her body more at risk than is good for the faction, because she is the very reason they are fighting. It's her claim, her future as their Queen.
And she herself is not the warrior-kind of person. Princess Rhaenys & Queen Visenya is more that. Plus, as I wrote HERE about Aegon II, her, and Alexander the Great, it is a huge risk for the leader of an army or whatever to go into a fight themselves.
Rhaenyra had never been trained to defend herself like most noble boys and men in Westeros. She isn't a warrior. Yes, the more battle-experienced a leader is, the more trust you could put into their ability to survive and even attack/defend their soldiers/subjects in a battle. Thus the lower the risk to self. But we need to acknowledge that not every person, man or woman, is going to be able to do that.
Going back to Rook's Rest, it was a trap, too, for her or any person she sent. Cole engineered or headed the plan by including Aegon-Sunfyre to Aemond-Vhagar. If Rhaenyra had gone, she definitely wouldn't have lived and the blacks could have banded beside Jace but it would be even harder to justify to some people doing so since they swore to her. And she herself cannot actively reaffirm and support her son's claims (with them being suspected bastards) if she is dead and cannot go on to rule and make some measure for them while alive/ruling. Rhaenys was way more experienced and assumedly more of a warrior, yet she does brutally.
Therefore, Corlys blaming Rhaenyra for not going out to risk herself is actually him being pretty misogynistic. There is no room made for her by him due to his grief yes, but also bc there is a belief that women are not fit for battle, never should lead, and should be kept out of said activities (because of the belief that they are physically just too weak/weaker than men and their bodies are "preoccupied" with childbirth and pregnancy makes them unable to respond as well to the demands of the unpredictability of battle). If that makes it easier for him to attack and blame her, he feels more justified to do that.
Same for child "rearing", or really for noble women's "observance of rearing".
Semi Watsonian, Semi-Doylist Answer
The text--written by a maester, who are mostly already misogynist themselves--does look at Rhaenyra side-eyed for not performing as a man/non-recovering birther could and the maesters really highlight Corlys' anger. I would attribute that to maesters not giving consideration to Rhaenyra's body (when her body has already lost "desirability" from her weight gain of successive childbirths, so they switch to and in the context of battle/"function") and choosing to keep their eyes shut about Aegon nearly dying at Rook's Rest (thus the reason why kings/queens/leaders are more often kept out of the thick of the fighting).
As always, when it comes to Fire and Blood's Dance accounts' unreliable narrator and less reliable sources, the readers are entrusted with recognizing inconsistencies and interpreting why/how those exist.
The Sowing (Doylist)
"The narrative even accentuates how detrimental Rhaenyra’s absence might have been...again in having Jace recruit dragonseeds to increase the Blacks’s draconic power at a time when one of their dragonriders is indisposed."
As for Jace being the one to suggest new dragonriders, using what I say above, I think that there is a sort of shift GRRM is making between Rhaenyra's authority to the promise of Jace and in doing so he's debilitating Rhaenyra.
Or it could, again, be Gyldayn not crediting her for something she did suggest they do?!
Let's say she didn't: Yes, this is obviously a depiction of a young man stepping up and helping his family/own claim, practicing adulthood sadly during wartime. This makes this heartwarming, but, as I and you note, it comes from Rhaenyra being pulled out of commission through her grief. This could have been written differently. Why not have them work together, Rhaenyra be the one to send Rhaena and Joffrey to the Vale and have her make Corlys the Queen's Hand? Jacaerys be the ones to send for Daemon's Pentoshi friends for his youngest brothers Viserys and Aegon?
Rhaenyra maybe having had the idea of the Red Sowing from Luke's death because she retreated for a bit and come back out with this idea? Gyldayn and most masters or contemporary men may not understand how she could have had such an idea, but we the audience could figure that she was locked away with her thoughts and it may have occurred to her to do this from her years-long struggles at court for her sons bc of the paternity suspicion. So she seeks revenge through the irony of having bastard offspring on her side fighting for her...aside from the needed extra riders. That would have been a great way for her to seek out revenge actively without actually fighting herself. A sort of subversion of both our (those who keep saying she should have gone, ugh) and those around her's expectations of a woman leading a side/house into war (not just battle, war).
But maybe Rhaenyra was the one to encourage to encourage her son to at least go to the Starks if not wholesale tell him what to do?! Again, this book was in-world written to disparage and discourage belief in female rulership. Gyldayn could have searched for information in the wrong place or he could have not thought about pursuing an important piece of infor bc he fet it wasn't important for his intent.
B)
You: "I don’t get why Martin uses a mother’s grief so often as a convenient plot device to force passivity, silence and absence on his female characters to fit the requirements of the plot, why it’s always the women who break down, rend their garments and retreat from public life, whereas men react to similar tragedies with anger, pursuit of vengeance and singular political focus."
I think it's partly from how men vs women, girls vs boys, have different lives of mobility and relationships to how they may use their bodies in a militaristic society. (Scroll Down to "Medieval/Westerosi Noble Male Vs. Female Mobility" of this post).
But AGAIN, Gyldayn is trying to "show" us that female ruler = bad ruler. HE could very well be the one to push forward this narrative element of women being too "emotional" to lead. the "plot" you mention could very well be just propaganda and/or loss of necessary information.
Let's take it at face value, again, anyway, jic: Westerosi women and girls grow up discouraged & punished for being vengeful, active in politics, or even just angry. Female rage is not as "useful" or acceptable to Westerosi aristocracy as male rage and revenge, as men are entrusted with military authority and power. And men are guided into compartmentalizing their vulnerabilities and grief into action. So while women do get angry, and do go on revenge missions (Lady Stoneheart and Barbra Dustin), they are going to also be more likely than men to sit in their grief and not "channel" that grief or anger into an immediate attack. There is also that with women, their access to learning how to politically maneuver others depends on their families' willingness to teach them. Finally, not every woman/girl is going to observe critical faults in her society in neglect of women and then respond to that by being an auto-didact (Arya vs Sansa; Elizabeth I vs Mary I). Girls/women are diversely human in that way.
However, IF THIS IS REALLY just GRRM, you have a point to point out that GRRM debilitates some of his main-or-Targ women with their extreme emotions a little more than he really needs to.
There is a story from Italy of a noble woman I can't remember the name of who responded to some siegers' threats to her son with "Do whatever you want with him, I have the means of having more children!", lifting towards her skirt or gesturing to her crotch. While mothers love their kids, they are also their own persons who are given or can develop a sense of ambition and desire to consolidate power/legacies/cultural memories for themselves as well. The two shouldn't be more mutually exclusive for them. For anyone, but in patriarchal societies, women are expected to be more self-sacrificing as they become the designated "nurturers" and domestic organizers of a household in some shape or form. However, the closest thing to a woman doing something like this in the ASoIaF world is Agnes Blackwood (AWoIaF -- "The Seven Kingdoms" -- "The Riverlands"):
Tumblr media
When they become leaders, this woman was head of her household/city at the time. Whether legend or reality, it presents the reverse of the woman rejecting a male invader's sexual advances and desires to overpower/"merge" with her house (Agnes Blackwood and the ward of Arlan III) for his own domination and legacy with a woman using her reproductive capabilities as a means to assert her own authority/credibility. As she, instead of him, can "continue" her house independently. And doing it while locked in the event of battle, a site we modern readers would not expect coming into this sort of world new.
I'd have liked more instances of this happening in the ASoIaF world, and that GRRM doesn't allow for this more often shows how much he is creating a tale of female subjugation versus actually trying to be just politically mindful of women in history. Sprinkle in a few more success stories and reduce the amount of times extreme emotion is used to dramatically raise the emotional stakes.
I noticed that the Sand Snakes and Arianne Martell are all sort of stopped once Doran finally decides to let them in on his plans to restore the Targaryen monarchy. I just remembered this. I took this to mean that Arianne and the Snakes, since Doran wasn't being an idiot by excluding them anymore and actually promising them their revenge, was a good thing. I'll have to reread to make sure.
I'll add gratuitous sexual violence that then draws out those extreme emotions to be used so a woman is more indisposed to meet a problem. There is a post by joannalannister that points out:
There is little criticism that GRRM lays down in the text about rape, unlike the anti-war sentiment. And people can argue for him that because rape is apart of war and he is writing anti-war novels then rape is wrapped up in that but GRRM doesn’t just write about rape in the context of war. Rape happens in the marriage bed, rape happens to children and women being sold into sex slavery, rape happens to women who are kidnapped for the spoils or men, or taken because of “Lord’s Right”. Rape happens with words, and looks, and touches. It happens to women of status or small folks. In ASOIAF, rape is something that just happens, period. End of discussion. And the thing that always bothered me the most about it was the way GRRM throws it into scenes and situations just to make whatever is happening that much more fucked up. As if rape is going to be that one thing that’ll make it more disgusting without really taking responsibility for what you’re putting the characters through or the reader.  Sure, GRRM probably thinks rape is a bad thing, but it really doesn’t shock me that GRRM’s response to the criticism of rape in GOT was “well, that’s how it happened in history”. Because from the way he writes the books, that seems to be the only depth.
One thing I disagree with this take is that GRRM is anti-war, the implication that he's anti-war unconditionally. No, he isn't. HE thinks war is necessary in the most extreme of circumstances or it's inevitable when it comes for you, when the other side insists on your destruction. This includes the Others. Or, like with Nymeria who went to war several times to give her people safety, wo do what I described at safety.
Anyway, he also decides to disappear his female (esp Targ) characters through traumatic and violent disconnections from lovers/husbands.
With Aelora, it's very possible that she was sexually assaulted by the Hawk, the Pig, and the Rat. Before that, she went "mad with grief" over somehow causing her brother's death. Funny how she is another female Targ heir who loses herself and the chance to become queen almost simultaneously. Her becoming a prospective Queen in her own right and it coming from her killing her brother-husband's/the last heir --who happened to be male--looks to have motivated someone(s) to target her and begin a rebellion against the crown. Thematically, this mimics the Dance at a smaller scale, but those rebellious men who attacked Aelora used the Dance as a precedent against female rulers.
Hopefully and not likely, she was not sexually assaulted, but we might never know for sure.
Funny enough, women with "opportunities" to rule magically crumble or are attacked and can't build defenses quickly or sufficiently enough to counteract it. With Gael, we get a girl who seemed to never become her own person, was either assaulted/seduced by a man in court/council OR as the official story goes was abandoned by a lower-classed lover and lost her child.
I comment on GRRM's writing for Rhaenyra HERE where I explain GRRM's writing for Rhaenyra and express my distaste for his decision to make her so overly passive and disengaged before I considered that maybe it is more GYLDAYN's perspective of "female ruler=bad ruler" and F&B being unconscious-conscious propaganda for that idea. I don't put it so eloquently and succinctly as you, anon partly because I tried to address the misogyny the askers used to criticize Rhaenyra, thinking that she was responsible for proving to misogynists that she should rule.

The way Otto keeps closing his eyes, putting his head down, and sighing. It’s giving “is this how it ends? All I did to secure my legacy and this is how it ends?”. If Otto was smart he’d go to Dragonstone and try to bargain for the lives of his other grandchildren. Aemond don’t even want the throne fr so I don’t think he’ll be an issue. He killed Lucerys but maybe Rhaenyra can adopt him. Y’know, like that Persian queen and Alexander The Great.

What do you think of people saying that sending thousands of men to die in battle is justified because Aegon II actually fought in battle, just like Ned and Stannis fought in their wars for example, but that Rhaenyra sending men to die for her in war is wrong because she never actually fought alongside them? I think it’s wrong. What does it matter to the families of the peasant men if the lord/prince/king dies fighting with their loved one? Their loved one still died for an aristocrat’s war. And anyways, many lords/kings/princes fight in wars not out of trying to be fair to their peasant soldiers, but because they want glory for themselves, they want songs sung about their battle prowess. Rhaenyra isn’t a warrior, and her not fighting doesn’t make her any worse than men who fought. And I thought it was very smart of her to not fight in a war in which she was a primary target. Aegon II did and he barely survived.
For people in the modern era who probably never having fought in, were close to any real fighting and destruction (likely Westerners), or having no memory of being in that sort of danger, this is such an easy way of thinking to have. I would like to hear someone(s) in my own country, the U.S., say or suggest that the president should go into battle with a particular platoon or whatever and not get lampooned, mocked, and ripped apart for it. for suggesting such a “barbaric” or stupidly reckless and unnecessary thing.
There is no shame or stupidity in not fighting with or amongst your army unless:
you wish/need to create a stronger image
there is a need for overall morale (as Jon Snow does)
And how we determine the urgency of those needs differ from case to case. In Rhaenyra’s case, she had just lost her child Visenya in a horrendous bout of labors that probably messes her up while more stressed than she ever had been birthing a child. She more than likely couldn’t ride without inviting even further internal injury to herself. (Which shows how Corlys, even with his grief--just as we acknowledge that Rhaenyra's grief over her sons do not erase her misogynoir against Nettles even with it lubricating her towards it--acts sexist-ly towards her when he blames her for Rhaenys' death and tells her she should have been the one to go to Rook's Rest instead).
And she had more dragonriders than Aegon at her disposal (even if she didn’t want to send her sons, again she had just lost Lucerys and her Visenya).
If she had actually left in her condition, she probably would have died or also sustained life-long injuries. We have to remember that Aemond and Vhagar were also there. And that Rhaenys was taken by surprise and killed (since she and the blacks didn’t seem to know that Aegon and Aemond would be there and were waiting). Yes she stepped up and charged forward, but again she did not expect it and maybe could have survived with another dragonrider there. The chances would be higher at least. (MORE on Criston Cole planning this BELOW)
Aegon was grieving but physically “secure”. (If he wasn’t drinking as much, which I doubt since he would still mourn for his kid and has always used alcohol for anything of note and stress relief, as alcoholics do. Still, he’d be readier and safer to ride than Rhaenyra).
The idea that a leader must fight right beside their soldiers is an idea popularized/inspired by ancient writers noting such of Alexander the Great. It is an idea of showing strength and a willingness to put oneself in danger for the success of the ethnic group, the culture, and/or the religion of that army. Thus encouraging them onwards and leading by example. Alexander fighting alongside his army was unheard of in his world as rulers tended to gather armies and keep themselves apart because, like in chess, the ruler/king’s capture/death means the end of the war (typically).
It’s also been that way for centuries and many battles were won before Alexander and many societies did not consider a king/ruler putting themselves in immediate harm’s way a perk or admirable. nobles and peasants alike wanted a strong ruler who’d wage wars, but not a reckless one -- because they needed/wanted a reasoning ruler to even wage wars in the first place and get them wins. Feudal/ancient mindsets and all.
And we can say all we can say about Alex beating many armies due to his “innovative” or out-of-the-box habits, but the very real problem is that he also sustained several injuries, some of them life-threatening. Several times.
I think that these people believe that Aegon went into battle because he wanted to somehow extend an image of solidarity, because he wanted to communicate strength and unity, or that he genuinely wished to show how willing he was to protect them and their families. However, that isn’t how it went down.
The battle at Rook’s Rest -- or really the dragon “dance” above it -- was planned by Criston Cole, who became Aegon’s new Hand after he dismissed Otto. And it was most likely meant for Rhaenyra, trying to draw her out. Here is a series of quotes showing Aegon’s losing trust and respect for Otto that lead to that decision: QUOTE #1, #2, #3.
Aegon followed Criston’s plan and he did it b/c:
revenge -> he wanted to kill Rhaenyra himself or have a personal hand in it for not accepting his rule and for Blood and Cheese
he felt that Otto was not giving him the results he wanted soon enough -> that he was being made to be seen as weak and unfit for the throne while Rhaenyra (the “unfit” and the woman) had all those supporters lined up against him -> his fitness for rule and his masculinity, he felt, were called into question publicly)
he wanted to display his own strength
Not because he cared about the peasants and fighters under his banners. He felt entitled to their swords because they declared for him and he was, in his own eyes, the king. That is also obvious when we see him execute those still supporting/declaring for Rhaenyra while imprisoned in the Red Keep before.
....All which ended with him almost dying and getting injuries so severe he had to be kept in bed for almost a whole year while Aemond became his Prince Regent (ironically, Alicent doesn’t become Aegon’s Queen Regent....hmmmm).
Some major differences between him and Aegon I is that Aegon had already used his dragon Balerion and fought on the behalf of several Esssoi persons (experience) and he had a much calmer temper and discerning personality that was not built on the idea that his penis gave him leave to delude himself into thinking he could not be vulnerable. Also, he hadn’t messed his body with alcohol as much as Aegon certainly did.
