Undead Unluck Week 2024
Day 4 - Favorite UMA: UMA Ghost
This is a really tough one since the majority of UMAs don't get much character development. Thus far, Spring and Clothy are the best explored, and the Master Rules are most likely going to rocket to the top pretty soon, but at the moment, I have to go with which UMA made the biggest impression on me, and that has to be Ghost
Not only does Ghost have, in my opinion, the absolute sickest design, he also facilitated one of the coolest fights. Andy vs. Nico was wildly upsetting in the best way; we got so much insight into Nico when up to that point it kind of seemed like he was just supposed to be a support character. We didn't know yet how impressive it was that he beat Language solo, and it kind of gave the impression that both of them were pretty weak, but the Ghost fight completely negated that impression
Unforgettable seems like it's not the most impressive ability, but the way that Nico was able to utilize it to master martial arts and recreate combat data of his fallen comrades suddenly made it odd that he was only the Eighth Seat! As we learn in his bio, Juiz kept his seat low on purpose so he wouldn't be obligated to leave the lab too often, letting him cling to Ichico's memory as much as possible
Ghost and Nico also are just an amazing combo. Memories and lost souls go together fantastically, and Nico's sunken, haunted eyes and aging emaciated body give him a simply ghoulish aesthetic that pairs perfectly with the gaping maw of Ghost's burlap cloak and skeletal limbs clinging to him
Loss, grief, memory...so long as we remember, people don't die, and the addition of Ghost perverts that very idea. The memory of those who have been lost is used to force them back into our world, and to force them to behave in ways they certainly wouldn't accept. Maybe Void would want to slug Andy, but there's no way he and Gina would ever allow themselves to be used to betray the Union
This same perversion is applied to Ichico as well. Ghost manipulates Nico with the promise of the memory of his wife. In Nico's heart, Ichico is dying, as all of his memories of her were before he became Unforgettable. If the accumulating memories overtake and crush what came prior, then Ichico will truly be gone. To preserve her memory, Nico strikes a deal with Ghost and kills all of his friends, endangers his daughter, and sells out the very world itself. Ichico would never be happy with that decision, but for Nico, it's all he has. Despite being Unforgettable, Nico cannot retain the one memory he wants to keep, and thus is haunted by a ghost that grows ever fainter
And of course, we can't discount Ghost's personality as well. Ghost claims to have always been lonely, likely because many people don't believe in ghosts even after his addition; many people manifest as generic spirit orbs rather than retaining their shape. When Andy acknowledged his soul, Ghost found him to be someone he could relate to and offered to be his friend. What exactly this means to him isn't delved too far into, but a UMA desiring friendship is very compelling. I doubt we'll get to interact with him again in L101, but I'd certainly appreciate it if he came back during the Soul fight
Honestly, if there's one fight I want to see reach the anime, it's the Ghost fight. How they would convey the difference between the hollow and soul-powered Astral Dolls, how they represent the silver glow of the soul, Nico's ever-mounting anguish as his personality slowly erodes and gives way to Ghost's possession...there's so much about this fight that I can envision would be so sick to watch, and if this season was any indication, there's a very good chance that they wouldn't disappoint

So the new WoW xpac hits tonight and I've decided I'm gonna get back into it... for a bit at least. The question is, what to play? I have a lock and a hunter at 50 from when I briefly played BFA, but I dont know if either of those particularly interest me so I'm open to suggestions. I have a level up token that came with the purchase of the new xpac so I can literally have any class at 50. So let's go down the list and I'll give my thoughts.
Warrior: I have no strong feelings about this class. They seem smashy which I'm cool with but I'm worried about their self sustain when solo questing.
Paladin: retadin has long been one of my favorite classes, but they are so easy to play it seems a shame to level boost one when I could be speeding through the leveling process as a draino Lite and get the heritage armor.
Rogue: I played rogue a bit back in WotLK. I have no idea if theyve changed at all. All in all a solid melee class, but i seem to remember them being a bit on the squishy side when it came to soloing.
Death Knight: aesthetically they're a fine class. Last I played, ice spec seemed a little weird, but solid all around. My issue with them is they have that silly ass intro questline which takes hours and I've done like 12 times.
Demon Hunter: similar complaint to DK vis a vis the intro questline. I've done it before and wish I could skip it. I cannot abide the purple rage bat and wish he stayed dead in BC.
Hunter: I got one. They're aight. Solid solo class but I dunno if I'd say I enjoy it.
Warlock: same as hunter.
Monk: I dunno this class so like. They seem like a fine enough melee class. I'm mostly interesting in something good for solo questing to see the world so the ability to tank or heal aren't super interesting to me.
Priest: last time I played priest, I hated it. Granted this was around cata but like. I'm not a fan of the WoW theory of healing and shadow spec bored me. It's possible they made it more interesting but...
Shaman: I used to main ele shaman during ulduar. That was a lot of fun. I dunno how they play nowadays tho. Last time I played Shaman, I did enhancement and it felt awkward and clunky. This was during cata tho so they may have made it cleaner.
Durid: if I'm gonna make a durid I'm gonna make a kul tiran for the boss ass wicker beasts, but I've got a bit of work ahead of me to unlock them. (Yeah, I'm going ally side. I've been a hordie for ages but the friends whose guild I'm crashing are ally side so...)
Mage: a solid choice, I suppose. I dunno how their self sustain is nowadays, but in the olden days they had magic shields and the universal o shit button that is invis. I leery of going clothy tho because I kinda feel like I want to play something a little meatier.
I think that's all the classes? I'm kinda trying to earmark some classes to level old school to get the heritage armor for each new race. I.e. kul tiran durid, but I've got some wiggle room there.

Black Queer People In Fashion To Support During Pride Month — & Beyond
This year, Pride month — which marks the 51st anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, when Black LBGTQ+ activists like Stormé DeLarverie and Marsha P. Johnson led demonstrations in NYC after the police raided Greenwich Village’s Stonewall Inn — intersects with a moment in history when the racist treatment of Black people in America is finally getting the widespread attention and action it deserves. Now it’s more important than ever to tell the often untold stories of Black queer designers, models, stylists, and more who’ve shaped the fashion industry. It’s also time to address present-day issues head-on: Many Black and queer people working in fashion are still subject to inequalities like pay discrepancies, tokenisation, and difficulties getting coverage for their work in a landscape that more often than not favours whiteness, as well as people who identify as cis and straight.  When talking about Black queer people in fashion, it's important to acknowledge people who paved way like Willi Smith, the Philadelphia-born designer credited for introducing streetwear to the runway. The Philadelphia-born designer, who passed away in 1987 from AIDS-related causes, was also the youngest designer to be nominated for a Coty Award in 1971, a feat he accomplished five years before launching his own label, WilliWear. Created with friend and business partner Laurie Mallet, the brand quickly became a favourite of everyday people in New York due to its affordable price point and cool, sporty aesthetic. According to the CFDA, in 1986, WilliWear was grossing over $25 million (£20 million) a year and sold in over 500 retailers. At the time of his death, Smith was widely regarded as the most successful Black designer in fashion.  Today there are many prominent and successful Black LGBTQ+ people in fashion. From Ama Elsesser, the Savage x Fenty model who in January announced that they were non-binary to CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund winner Christopher John Rogers, ahead, a list of Black queer people in fashion to follow and support this month and beyond.
Ama Elsesser
IMG model and younger sibling of CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund judge Paloma Elsesser, Ama Elsesser is a force of their own. At just 21-years-old, Elsesser has already been featured in Jonah Hill’s cult-favourite film Mid-90s, starred in a campaign for Rihanna’s lingerie line Savage x Fenty, and modelled alongside Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon, Slick Woods, and Luka Sabbat in an UGG campaign. In January, they came out publicly as non-binary, and just last month starred in Calvin Klein’s star-studded Pride campaign, for which they told Refinery29 that their goal in modelling is to “create space for more marginalised queer people of colour.”
Christopher John Rogers
In his 26 years, Baton Rouge-born Christopher John Rogers has already dressed Michelle Obama, won the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award, and presented three collections during New York Fashion Week — the latest of which was his most impressive to date and resulted in the designer twirling on the runway to the sound of a standing ovation. "The next big goal for the brand is to continue to exist,” he said in an interview preluding the show, but, from where we’re sitting, that was just Rogers being humble.
Jason Bolden
Ever wondered how celebrities like Alicia Keys, Yara Shahidi, Zazie Beetz, and Cynthia Erivo always look so perfectly put together? Nine times out of ten, it’s because Jason Bolden, the co-founder of JVN Studio and a renowned celebrity stylist, picked out their outfits. In addition to dressing your favourite A-listers for the red carpet, Bolden also stars on the Netflix home design show Styling Hollywood and was included on Hollywood Reporter’s Top 25 Most Powerful Stylists for the last three years.
Kenneth Nicholson
Given that he’s already dressed the likes of Lil Nas X and Parker Kit Hill for Out Magazine, it’s no surprise that designer Kenneth Nicholson is garnering massive attention. The LA native has a knack for creating feel-good clothing, be it because of the bright and warm colour schemes he chooses or the romantic fabrics and silhouettes that can be found in his collections.
LaQuan Smith
31-year-old Queens native LaQuan Smith founded his eponymous label in 2008, debuting at NYFW just two years later to a crowd that included Vogue’s then-Editor-at-Large Andre Leon Talley. His designs have since caught the attention of Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Kim Kardashian West, as well as fine winery Moët Chandon, which tapped Smith for its annual Nectar of the Culture program. As for the pieces he creates, expect clothing designed especially to make women feel empowered and sexy, like mini dresses that accentuate curves and leather pants.
Nicole Zïzi Studio
Sustainability and inclusivity are at the core of every piece of clothing designed by Nicole Zïzi. “As a nod to circularity, I aim to protect our communities while simultaneously I am always keeping in mind the way each design affects our environment as a whole," she wrote on her website, which serves the fashion community with gender-free sportswear, including utility jackets, graphic T-shirts, and accessories.
Pierre Davis, No Sesso
Pierre Davis’s genderless fashion label No Sesso — which in Italian translates to “No Sex/No Gender” — made its NYFW debut during the fall ‘20 season, making Davis the first-ever trans person to present at the biannual event. Founded in 2015, the LA-based brand is centered around community and inclusivity. “It’s a lifestyle that encompasses fashion, our parties, embroidery workshops, or just hanging out and feeling that sense of community,” Davis told the CFDA. A favorite of Kelela, Erykah Badu, and Kelsey Lu, No Sesso is quickly becoming the brand to watch in 2020.
James Phlemuns, Phlemuns
Another favourite of Lil Nas X, Phlemuns is an L.A.-based gender-inclusive fashion label founded by James Flemons. And the Grammy-Award-winning musician behind “Old Town Road” isn’t alone — Kelsey Lu, Paloma Elsesser, and Paramore’s Hayley Williams are fans of Phlemuns, too.
Uzo Ejikeme and Stoney Michelli Love, Stuzo Clothing
Founded in 2010 by Panamanian graphic designer, actor, and photographer Stoney Michelli and Nigerian activist and artist Uzo Ejikemo, Stuzo may be a gender-free clothing brand based in L.A. but it is inspired by New York’s bustling atmosphere.
Telfar Clemons, Telfar
CFDA-winning Liberian-American fashion designer Telfar Clemons is most notable for his iconic Shopping Bag, a simple square tote that makeup artist Xya Rachel referred to in a now-viral tweet in 2019 as “The Bushwick Birkin” due to its cult status in the Brooklyn neighbourhood. But that’s not all Clemons is known for. His use of classic American typefaces, paired with his unique take on simple sportswear, has made him beloved by all — in Bushwick and beyond — with fans including Solange Knowles, Kelsey Lu, and A$AP Ferg.
Like what you see? How about some more R29 goodness, right here?

I switched to demon hunter when BfA came out because my guild needed to bring the 5% magic damage debuff and I was struggling to find a class/spec I actually enjoyed playing after they removed ranged survival and didn’t give any sort of second-best substitute.  It’s now been sixteen months and I’m beginning to get incredibly frustrated with my DH—I like her as an alt, but I feel incredibly constrained by her aesthetically because the pool of warglaive or warglaive-like appearances is so tiny (and isn’t likely to grow very much any time soon).  It’s dumb that that’s the kind of thing that can tilt me as hard as it’s been tilting me, but I’ve basically exhausted the appearance pool at this point.
Anyway I told my raid leader that I’d give him a concrete decision on what I was doing for 8.3 by the end of the year, which means I have to figure out what, if anything, I’m going to main switch to.  The big problem is that getting raid-ready at this point takes significantly more time and effort than it ought to at this point in the expansion, because there are no catch-up mechanics for the 8.2 Azerite Essences, and 8.3 isn’t actually going to help with that as far as I can tell (it’s lowering the rep requirement for two of the essences, but isn’t lowering the time or specialized currency requirements for most of the others).  Artifact knowledge helps with unlocking the slots and the 3% stamina bonuses and that’s in a good position, but unfortunately that means nothing when you’ve got nothing to put into those slots in the first place.
So I need to go through and figure out what I’m doing, and since I’m going in circles in my head about it I figured I ought to actually go long form on this MFer.  This is... going to be long, probably.  I don’t know if it’ll even help.  Let’s find out, I guess.
Shaman (elemental focus): + Hybrid (melee, ranged, healer) + One-spec hybrid (no expectation of having to know, gear up, and play both DPS specs the way a mage would) + Mentioned specifically as a thing we could use (ele) + Decent transmog pool (+KT heritage if race changed) - Still has a lot of baggage from when she was my main TBC-MoP - Resto not a fun or intuitive offspec - Condensed Life Force and Blood of the Enemy essentially required (multi-week raid + battlegrounds PvP) for ele - Turret caster (not my preferred playstyle)
Druid (all four specs viable to varying degrees): + Hybrid (melee, ranged, tank, healer) + Best possible offspecs (resto druid has a long history of being good to me in 5-man content, guardian makes sense and meshes well) + Long history and great library of fantastic transmog options with matchable weapons (both 1h and 2h) + Could also be a KT if I really wanted to give up shadowmeld (which is a v tall ask, but y’know) + Currently actually has my name on Skywall (no more having to stop and think before calling something out bc my character name isn’t the name I go by nonsense) - Balance is incredibly unintuitive to play and makes me feel real dumb real fast - Feral is also really not super great (and is melee, and severely limits mog options due to the way the legion artifact cat skins works) - We already have four in raid (one feral, two balance, one resto); would be very obvious very quickly that I’m the weakest link + Vision of Perfection isn’t as good as CLF for balance but only just barely and would at least be an acceptable stopgap while the incredibly long CLF acquisition period happened
Warlock: - Pure DPS (queues and group finder for catch-up, leveling, or maintenance going to be long with no option to play something less fun for less time investment) + Survivable in solo content (ty voidwalker) + Versatile(ish) playstyle with three specs to choose from - ... but that sort of implies that you have to know and play at least 2/3 (if not all 3) - Affliction is the ultimate multi-dot tracking spec and I’ve never found a good way to do that for me + Affliction is as mobile as casters get these days (and as close as you can get to ranged survival in the current game, fuck you blizzard) +/- Unexciting transmog options (but at least since I’ve never mained a clothie it’s all essentially new; on the flip side it also means I don’t own a lot of it already so I’d have to go out farming) - Wands are still A Thing™ - Destruction and Demonology are turret casters - CLF and Blood of the Enemy both incredibly strong (VoP is almost equal to CLF for destro)
Rogue: - Pure DPS - Not solo survivable at low gear levels (never played at high gear levels to know if that changes significantly) - Poisons (only a problem for assassination right now but they’re coming back in shadowlands bc blizzard is stupid so (: love that) - Transmog options limited by weapon type for 2/3 specs - Melee - Honestly why am I even putting them on the list I like Sylenna but I hate everything rogues stand for and would never want to main one lmao
Demon Hunter (havoc focus): + Hybrid (melee/tank) - Melee
Tumblr media
- Incredibly limited transmog options (exclusively due to personal brain stuff since they can actually use swords and axes and fist weapons, I just don’t want to.  Also because some of the DH looks look real bad with the dark skin tone my DH uses and I refuse to spend 300g to whitewash her) - RC Loot Council still thinks they can use daggers and it hurts my soul every time - New weapon mog requires multiple bonus rolls over several weeks due to literally nobody else in the raid being eligible for the drops (and praying that extensions don’t happen or you’ll get fucked like in Dazar’alor) + Vengeance is pretty okay in casual dungeon environments (even if it never feels like I have a button to press for emergencies) + Essences are not an issue (b/c she’s already put the time in)
Mage: - Pure DPS - Incredibly not-survivable in solo content at low item levels.  I have never once felt safe in open world content on my mages once they hit max level. - Sharing a class with Cider strikes me as incredibly dangerous to my sanity (since he’s so tryhard about his damage) +/- Unexciting transmog options + I do have the mage MoP CM armor tho! - Wands + Best class mount by leaps and bounds + Ranged + Fire/Frost at least have some mobility options + Being in control of AI and hero so we don’t have to call for them fifty times a pull sounds real nice (except when I want to be the one not paying attention)
Priest (shadow focus): + Hybrid (ranged/healer/healer) + Disc is the only non-druid healing spec I feel at least slightly comfortable in in casual dungeons (though not anything actually challenging) - Shadow is a multidot spec and multitarget multidot is hard to keep track of - Also we have two already (including the guild leader) +/- Unexciting transmog options (exacerbated by shadowform) - Wands + Ranged
Death Knight: + Hybrid (melee/melee/tank) - Melee +/- Unexciting transmog options + Blood doesn’t seem bad as far as tanking specs go - I haven’t touched Unholy since Wrath and supposedly its top dog atm - Let’s just skip over DK for now, honestly—it doesn’t bring anything to the Xella Table that warrior doesn’t also do (except blood > prot)
Warrior: + Hybrid (melee/melee/tank) + Brings a semi-unique buff (Battle Shout for when Irken isn’t around) - Melee +/- Unexciting transmog options + Capable of stealing almost everyone else’s weapon mog, tho—v exciting! - Naha will probably crack jokes about how bad a tank I am and/or how bad my DPS is if I main a warrior again, and regardless of whether it was true or is true, it will quietly tilt me off the face of the planet. - Would need a facelift; current look works fine for an alt but isn’t versatile enough for a main (would also benefit from a name change at the same time, honestly)
Hunter: - Pure DPS + Incredibly survivable in solo content at low item levels - Only has two specs (fuck you blizzard) + Great mog options, both for default look and enough variants to keep me satisfied + Also has quiver options in at least one spec - Not as mobile as it should be + Still more mobile than pretty much any other ranged + Sporey + Ranged + BOWS
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
- (: - I’d probably tilt myself off the face of the planet within six months anyway, just bc I’d be constantly reminded that ranged survival doesn’t exist anymore which is why I’m playing the inferior spec(s). - Honestly I keep coming up with excuses not to go back to the hunter but I really don’t think it’d be good for me - But I really want to play her or my druid hrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh
Paladin: + Hybrid (melee/tank/healer) + Good offspec (protadin used to be better but is still entertaining, holy is a mystery tho) - Melee + We don’t have one + Utility (blessings and whatnot) - Unintuitive “rotation” - Very expensive to main (don’t have a paladin on Skywall, only 120 paladin at all atm is Horde)
Monk: + Hybrid (melee/tank/healer) - Offspecs are both dodgy (ha, brewmaster pun) - Melee - WW isn’t especially fun to play +/- Brings a unique (de)buff, but we already have two monks in our roster so it’s less an issue of never sitting/never getting to sit than the DH is. - Very expensive to main (the other class I don’t have on Skywall atm)
