Yet another hypothermia ask lol (it’s just a topic i find very interesting for some reason):

1) First aid tips often mention that you should warm the person’s core, not their extremities, as that could cause pain and arrhythmias. However, other sources say that if the hypothermia has caused frostbite, the damaged tissue (often extremities) should be warmed (like putting a frostbitten hand into warm water). Don’t these two contradict? Also as per this, doesn’t this mean that wrapping person in electric blanket is a bad idea because it also rewarms extremities?

2)I’ve also seen it said that it’s a bad idea to give person a warm bath. Does that universally apply or is it ok to give bath as long as you make sure the water is only moderately warm and not like scalding hot?

3) Does hypothermia cause a drop in o2 saturation? Is warm humidified oxygen given for it only for the sake of internal rewarming or is it also needed for treating a lack of oxygen?

4)I’ve also heard people say that skin to skin isn’t the best of ideas unless absolutely necessary. Why is that?(heard something about it potentially exhausting the giver and making them cold too but I’m not sure how credible that is)

1- there are different "levels" of hypothermia, and for everything except the most severe you can warm the extremities usually without a problem. Basically, if someone is still conscious, warming the extremities at the same time as the core is sufficient. If someone is unconscious, you want to do your best to warm their core (putting warm packs in their armpits, neck and groin).

As for frostbite, it's not an emergency, so if you are trying to avoid warming the extremities, you can wait to treat the frostbite until someone is a normal temperature. You also never want to treat frostbite if there is a chance it could re-freeze, so typically you're waiting until the very last minute to treat the frostbite anyway- once the person is out of the wilderness setting and warmed up.

2- Generally you don't want to give someone a warm bath because there's usually some changes in mental status in hypothermia. Both that the person can't feel the temp of the water and they might slip under the water and drown if there's not someone physically holding their head up out of the water. A warm bath is also going to open up blood vessels near the surface of the body, which is usually the coldest, and supercharge cold blood going to the core, which will cause afterdrop (people getting colder even after treatment has begun) and the possibility of arrhythmia. These are both things we're trying to minimize.

3- Not necessarily. Mostly its for the internal rewarming.

4- I have not heard this. I suppose it could exhaust the giver, but most of the time if the giver is in the hypowrap too they're going to be warm enough for the both of them (hypowraps get really freaking warm inside). I would not do skin to skin without some kind of insulation though, since you don't want to strip down in the cold. Also, if one person in a group has hypothermia, generally a lot of people in the group have hypothermia, so finding another person to put in the hypowrap shouldn't be difficult.

Trafalgar Law and Reader Part three.

Trafalgar Law was stressed when he had seen you on the securitycamera and he was even more stressed when he had seen how far your hypothermia had come, reaching the third Stage. Your crews weren't friends or something but Pirate or not, he was a doctor after all and knowing you was enough to help you.

By the stage of Hypothermia you were, it was the best and fastest way to get your heart out of your frozen body and keeping it warm and protected first. Placing your body on his bed, he checked in your temperature First - 26° that was to Low for medication to work. Law went to a cupboard, some bunkered paraphernalia for medical treatment in there, he got a heat foil and two thick blankets to cover you completly in, followed by warming a hot water bottle with the kettle in his room.

He kept checking your vitals for an hour, luckily for you, devilfruitusers were more durable than most normal people so your Body reached a temperature of 34° very soon. At 36° he decided the worst was over and a afterdrop wouldn't happen, Law went to the meeting with Caesar and Mone.

It was already midnight when Trafalgar got back to his room as he wanted to prepare a room for you which he stuffed with books, equipment and...scrap. Under all that was an old rusty bed, the room even had a seperated Toilet including a small squerd Window.

Checking on your vitals again, heatin the warm Water bottle, the piratedoctor turned the big light off, but turned on the lamp on his desk, sitting on the chair in front of it and reading the book from the evening before. It took Law one more hour until sleep would find him.

It was a calm night after the snowstorm from the day was over, leaving a white coated shimmer over the dark Sky above the Iceside of Punk Hazard. Low lights in red and yellow blinking outside on the shell of the hidden fabric. The only round window in Trafalgar Laws room was covered in snow only a narrow slit was free to watch into the night.

When you woke up, you felt cozy, warm, tired and damn weak. Everything was still a blur to you and it took a while till your eyes got used to the darkness only a dimmed light coming from the desk in front of the bed allowing you to see sillouetes. Two of them worth mentioning. Trafalgar Laws Hat and himself lying asleep over his desk.

Trafalgar Law...something was ringing in your head.

"Room".

Then the Schock came, your eyes staring trough the memory that gradually came back, every colour that got back to your face dropped, your shaky hand went under the sweater and t-shirt over your chest where your heart should be, but instead there was...

...nothing.

Just a hole.

You felt the nausea coming over you. Panic taking over your thoughts as you put your hand over your mouth to stop yourself from throwing up, a thousand thoughts were swirling in your head that were causing you pain. How could that be? why did he do that? would you have been so wrong about him? There had to be a plausible reason for it, right? You gasped for air because you suddenly could hardly breathe. Everything only got worse as Trafalgar woke up from your restless manner and looked around sleepily at you.

"You're awake, how're you feelin'...what the?!"

When he saw you gasping for air, he turned the light towards you and rushed over. He leaned over to you, pulling the blankets down a little from. "Okay, you're having a panic attack. Everything will be fine, try to breathe calmly, look me in the eyes and concentrate on me."

He made clear breathing movements and you tried to adjust to the rhythm. Your (E/C) eyes didn't leave his grey eyes and they managed to calm you down. "That's good. Wait a moment and carry on like this, i'll be right back," he said in his calm, deep voice and disappeared behind a door, you could hear the water running before the black-haired man came back with a glass and a damp flannel that he placed over your forehead "This should help" he said gently pushing you back onto your pillow.

You looked at him skeptically, not knowing what to think, but definitely knowing what you wanted to know. “My...heart...you have my heart. I want to know why, but first I want it back right now" you still sounded weak but your voice had emphasis.

If you want something a little different (and maybe a lot Western) that's an odd little bar in Koenji run by legitimate cowboy and westerner, Jesse James McCree, who sells his home cuisine of nachos, enchiladas, tacos, and quesadillas with salsa fresca and guacamole that is alleged to be made with tequila. It is a well-kept secret, but don't let his profuse amount of English and Spanish overwhelm you - his Japanese is also quite good, and there is Japanese staff. Just be careful: he flirts back. With anyone.

Macchiato by CommonNonsense [WIP; 64,661 words] Reccer comment: "I also love 'Macchiato,' the coffee shop AU that isn't a coffee shop AU, by CommonNonsense, & I regularly struggle to find a way to say, 'I hope this continues!' without applying any pressure"

Overwatch takes an extended mission undercover in a coffee shop in the heart of Seattle, a prime location to stake out their current targets. McCree's not one for the big city or fancy coffee, but the work needs doing, and it's not like anyone outside Overwatch will get it done. It should be a straightforward, if tedious, mission.

Then Hanzo Shimada complicates things by walking in, unaware, for want of a simple mocha.

While on a mission to redeem himself in the eyes of his clan, Hanzo Shimada becomes indebted to a reckless vigilante, who constantly throws himself headlong into danger. The two clash in every way, except on the battlefield. There, Hanzo rediscovers the feeling of having someone to cover his own weaknesses.

unfortunately for diluc i like him a (not) normal amount which means i am stuck on the thought of him accidentally hurting reader in an attempt to warm them up because oh my god. who could have guessed. teddy likes it when pretty men are sad and guilty because he has a type.

apparently rewarming someone up too quickly can cause (according to my like five minutes of googling i’m not a medical expert) “cardiac arrhythmia, infection” and a ton of other things but that’s what i’m focusing on bc picture this with me. diluc having one hand on your pulse as he’s warming you up, only to feel your heartbeat grow slower and more irregular from the shock - teddy anon

arrhythmia is just irregular beating of the heart, but if we pick and choose our definitions we can make it so your heart slows as he’s heating you up. now, this on its own is interesting, as he might think he’s not doing enough, but… we can make it worse.

yes yes certified sources say putting warmth to the neck or chest are less harmful than the arms or legs but you know what? fuck you google. you think i want logic in my fantasy?

that being said- there’s two major blood vessels in your neck, one on each side, and they’re very close to your heart, as expected. by which i mean, the blood in the vein gets to your heart fast.

in addition, there’s something called “core temperature afterdrop,” i. e. cold blood from extremities gets to your heart and now you’re cold again. this means that anywhere from 10-40 minutes after, you can be hit by what’s essentially hypothermia 2: electric boogaloo.

so… diluc doing his best, warming you up too fast unintentionally since he’s heating the vessels immediately before your brain and heart. feeling your heart beat pick up maybe a bit too high, but just thinks it’s stress, and helping you up, helping you walk, keeping you in his coat. you’re walking, stumbling through the snow, all seems well.

you’re covered in warm clothes, your body thinks all is well, so it stops pooling blood in your torso and brain and begins regular circulation again (which yes is something that actually happens, it’s why your hands and feet get coldest first when it’s cold out!). this brings in cold blood to your core, and oh no it’s the same but worse again.

this could happen still in dragonspine, in the forest- hell, at the manor or a nearby domain, where he’s hiding from a pack of hunters or fatui, where he’s vulnerable and can’t risk trying to use his vision at all, lest it draw their attention.

…what i’m saying, through the unnecessary medical terms, is that hypothermia can hit twice. and i think that could be interesting.

Overwatch 2 will never have what Overwatch 1 had (an active & sizable following on pre porn ban tumblr) 😔

I think it’ll have more traction when PvE starts, but for now I’m just happy to see the number of people I follow who I didn’t even know ever had played in the past coming back to the game and enjoying it. I also don’t really care about the porn ban aside from the effect it had on sex workers but it is kinda funny how it did remove a sizable amount of overwatch fans from the site

When I was spamming older clips and posts it made me super nostalgic to go “wow look how many thousands of notes this had” because I almost forgot overwatch league season one (and even apex prior) had a pretty sizable following because it was a game so many people loved

It’s six years into the game and I still haven’t read afterdrop though
