wait hey i just realized that greater boston has 5 seasons like the 5 stages of grief. hm. oh no. i kinda wanna see if there’s actually anything there, so im just gonna speculate...
season 1: denial. leon’s ghost isn’t yet confirmed to truly exist, so his haunting is much more... metaphorical in tone. there’s a seance made in an attempt to speak to him and a persistent theme of michael claiming/believing himself to be haunted by leon’s ghost, saying he’s still there, helping him, which sounds pretty denial-y to me. (yes, even though he was right. he was both right and also in denial. you understand.) (chelmsworth tries/succeeds at starting red line, and leaves before he can become mayor. michael tells him that there will be consequences, and chelmsworth ignores him.)
season 2: anger. red line is officially a thing, and so is leon’s ghost. i don’t remember a lot about what specific events occurred in season 2, actually, other than that there definitely was anger, i think? the anger isn’t exactly unique to this season, tho, there’s a lot of anger in season 1. emily feeling angry about her marriage, isabelle, angry about injustices, nica, angry about being abandoned, lashing out at complete strangers all of the time.  i guess anger might be the driving point of season 2? it’s why emily is even a problem, and why nica stoops so low. (one thing that IS unique to season 2 is that this is where EVERYONE starts being angry at CHELMSWORTH for leaving them behind,)
season 3: bargaining. (chelmsworth comes back, with the intentions to make amends!! he even offers gifts!! he is turned down. hard.) michael gets to talk to leon again and michael pleads with leon to play chess with him, forgoing sleep and food. one game? it’s just good to hear your voice again... and leon, at first, relents, but once the game is done, leon tells michael that he needs to let him go, once it’s obvious that this isn’t good for him. again, michael’s pleading- no, he’s bargaining, that there’s so much value in the way that michael’s person-hood is being overwritten with leon’s own, in the way he’s losing himself in leon’s thoughts, his feelings, his memories. leon’s a CHARACTER again, and his friends are looking for him. sure, leon’s a ghost, but he’s right there! within arms reach and not behind the inconceivable barrier between life and death! it’s almost like he never died! ...but.
speculation:
season 4: depression. it’s not safe to hold on to leon that way. as evidenced by michael and poletti, talking to leon is too dangerous for most people. it hurts them. badly. deeply. leon is dead. he killed himself, and his return as a ghost doesn’t change that. everyone has to move on, for their own sake and his. leon hasn’t exactly “come back to them.” not by choice, anyway, and he’s leaving once he gets the opportunity to do so. that’ll probably be pretty disappointing, and, y’know, really depressing.
season 5: acceptance, leon doesn’t want to roam this world as a ghost anymore, and wishes to return to his rest. he needs help to do so, and he’ll most likely need it from those who loved him most. they finally let him go, and accept that, this time, they’ll really never see him again.

into the night (bakugou x reader) - Chapter 1/?
Tumblr media
Summary:
You were born to die.
It is a fact you’ve known since your quirk first manifested, and one you have been denying for just as long. You refuse your supposed fate and try to live the best life you can while remaining undetected.
But maybe fate has another plan. A chance encounter on a mountainside changes your life forever.
MATURE : MINORS DO NOT INTERACT // 18+
You were born to die.
It is a fact you’ve known since your quirk first manifested, and one you have been denying for just as long. You don’t want to die. Not now, not when there are so many things you haven’t done. So many views you haven't seen.
You pull yourself up some ragged rocks, muscles working harder than they have in months to successfully drag your body up. The small rock ledge isn’t close to the top of the mountain, but it’s a good stopping point for today. You look up at the snowy expanse still ahead of you, the sun leaving long shadows along the white and grey exterior, and can’t help but smile. No, you don’t want to die.
Sitting back, you let yourself breathe and watch the top. An old memory flashes in your mind, the first time you hiked to the top with Dad. You had been so little, and so proud of yourself despite Dad having carried you through the most difficult parts. You screamed so loudly at the top, trying to tell the entire village that you made it. Dad had only been able to quiet you by saying that you could “wake up” the volcano with your screams.
The memory makes you smile. There weren’t many good times in your life right after your quirk manifested, but Mount Yotei had been a part of almost all of them. You have missed the mountain since moving to the city. Sapporo might not be that far, but you haven’t been able to make your way home often enough. Being on-call meant that leaving the city even for the few hours it took to get to the village was almost impossible, let alone actually making the long trip up.
You breathe in the crisp autumn air and reach for your pack, grabbing some water and a granola bar. You don’t bring much in terms of food with you, careful of attracting the wildlife during this season, but this will do. Munching happily, your eyes don’t leave the top of the mountain. You will get back up there soon.
It feels like only a few minutes before you have to begin the trek back down. You had started the climb too late in the day to actually make it too far up, or to relax too much, but you couldn't resist the call of the mountain when you saw it on your drive up. Dad could wait, he’d understand. You slide carefully down the rocky ledge and begin your walk back down. The trail you  are using is rough, with roots and rocks sticking out all over the place. It is not a tourist trail, but the one used by locals the most.
Something moves in the distance.
You startle, on edge immediately. Your hand reaches down for the bear spray connected to your belt, fingers ready to release it from the clip at a moment's notice. Damn, you knew you stayed out a bit too late, pushed it a bit too much.
But it’s not a bear that emerges from the bushes. It’s a man. Equally as startling, really, as the tourist season has been well and over for a few months now. You feel the tension release from your body a bit, but not completely. People can be just as dangerous as animals, you see that every day at work. The man pauses too, although he does not look surprised to see you.
Your first thought at seeing him is that he is definitely not dressed to be out on the mountain. His clothes are dark and inappropriate for the altitude level: a long-sleeved shirt and baggy pants. At least he seems to be wearing boots. You don’t see any bag, no protection items, no water or food, nothing on him. It was something you would see on a casual hike around the bottom of the mountain, not this far up.
The more you look at the man, the more you realize that he is, well, really damn good looking. The man, probably around your age if you had to guess, is tall and built for power. He has spikey ash blonde hair and a handsome face that was...slowly turning angrier as you stared at him. Shit, okay. You should probably stop that then. You force your gaze away, looking down at your feet as you continue your descent down the steep terrain. Your hand fiddles with the bear spray, a cation brought on by city life. Just in case.
It only takes a moment before you pass him, each silently headed in opposite directions across the mountain. You bite your lip, thoughts focused on the other hiker. Why is he up so high on the mountain dressed like that? It's completely irresponsible, dangerous. The times you had been on the mountain after this late had been calculated and in dedicated areas where people knew to find you. You had protection from the elements and animals. It had never been this late in the year. The thoughts nag at the back of your head. Maybe it is a feeling of politeness towards a fellow hiker, or maybe it's just the want to not have the local police up on the mountain tomorrow over a dead body, but you stop in your tracks.
Fuck it.
“Hey, um, it’s pretty late.” You call out, turning around to the man.
“Hah?!” He pauses, turning his head just enough to look at you out of the corner of his eye. A shiver runs down your back.
“I’m just saying that you should probably begin to head down. The mountain gets much more dangerous after sunset. Oh!” You reach around to your backpack, hand rummaging around until you grasp a familiar can. “Especially the bears. They’ll start hibernating soon so they’re more aggressive than normal.” No response. Okay.  Maybe a peace offering. “I don't see any bear spray on you. You can take mine, I have extra.”
You give a polite smile and hold it out with your hand, prepared to throw it up to him if necessary. For a moment he just stares at you, eyebrows furrowed. Then he turns away with a small grunt, continuing his walk up the mountain. Your smile falls as your mouth opens in shock. Is he just...going to leave you standing here holding out the bear spray like a damned fool? Without saying anything?!
You watch him walk away, hand clutching harder at the can as your anger rises. Eventually, you lower your hand, shoving the spray roughly back in your pack. You grumble angrily to yourself and turn around, stomping harsher than normal down the path.
Okay, so he’s an asshole then.
Still, completely rude or not, you can’t help but be a bit worried. You make good time down to the bottom of the mountain and trek your way through the forest to the street you parked your car on. The sun has completely set by the time you turn on your engine and drive away.
Well, you tried to warn him. If something happens, it’s not your fault. Right? Right.
With a groan, you pop a rock CD into your stereo and turn it on full blast. Anything to distract you from that nagging feeling in your gut. Makkari isn’t too far from the mountain, so that feeling hasn’t completely gone away by the time you pull into your childhood home. Your dad though, sitting on the front step reading a book, does the job. You smile and turn off the engine.
The rest of the night goes by quickly, as both of you have a lot to say to each other. Dinner is a relatively calm affair, and you take a bath before heading to bed. The bed is much smaller and harder than the nice one you splurged on in your apartment, but being in it brings a sense of nostalgia and comfort that only a childhood bedroom can have. Dad hasn’t changed a thing since you left.
You sit on the bed, pulling your hair into a comfortable do for sleep, when your eyes catch the outline of the mountain in the distance from your window. You sigh, sending a quick wish that he made it alright, before sliding under the covers and passing out.
You wake up to sounds from downstairs. For a brief moment, you are confused, as you have been blessed with an apartment with thicker walls than normal, but then you remember. You stretch in bed and smile. It has been a while since you have had the opportunity to sleep in. Why do people rarely get in trouble during normal business hours?
Finally forcing yourself out of bed, you wander to the bathroom before heading downstairs in your pajamas. The smell of breakfast is already making your stomach growl.
“Get dressed.” His voice echoes through the house.
“But- how- you’re not even looking!” You protest, feet pausing on the stairs. “How do you even know?!”
“I always know.”
Ugh. “Such a Dad answer.” You grumble, turning to head back upstairs. You’re a grown adult, if you want to wear pajamas to breakfast you will. Not that you would say that to him though. Nope. Not going to die on that hill today.
You put a little more effort into your appearance this time, dressing and putting your hair into a casual do before heading back downstairs. Dad, already fully dressed, gives you a look but says nothing. You stick out your tongue at his back, feeling like a teenager again. You sit down at your usual chair as he begins to set the table.
The breakfast you ate regularly as a kid but haven’t been really able to replicate successfully since moving out gets placed down in front of you. You wait for Dad to be sitting down too before grabbing pieces for yourself. For a brief, glorious moment, you are both silent.
“So, have you met anyone?”
And it's over. You swallow your food, looking carefully away.  “I meet lots of people. It’s a big city.”
You can practically feel his eyes stare into you. “You know what I mean.”
With a breath, you put down your utensils. “Dad, we go over this every time we talk. No, I’m not seeing anyone. Can we stop discussing this now?
“Is it because of-”
“No! It isn’t because of him.” You interrupt, looking him straight in the eye.“Why does it matter? I can be happy on my own.”
“I just...want you to be taken care of and protected.” Dad finally looks away. “I need you to be safe.”
“Dad, I don’t need someone to protect me.” You sigh. “I can protect myself, you know? I’m a big girl.”
You watch his reaction, but he doesn’t say anything. His eyes flicker over behind your head, to the picture on the wall you know he is staring at. It tugs at your heart. “Move back to Makkari?” His voice is quieter now.
It’s an argument you’ve had countless times before over the phone. When you first moved to Sapporo he asked you almost every day. Luckily, it isn’t that bad anymore, but you can still rely on a call anytime a villain is even close to Hokkaido.
“No.” You shake your head, catching his eyes as he looks back. “I have my job, my friends, and my life in Sapporo. I love you Dad, but I can’t live here.”
“You could be happy here.” He insists. “There are no villain attacks. No heroes.” His eyes flicker back over your shoulder. “You can be safe.”
“Nobody is safe anywhere Dad.” You sit back, frustration draining. “We could die any day. I don’t want to live my life in fear. That is not a life.” The flinch in his shoulders makes a bit of guilt dig into your stomach. It was a low blow, but you were not going to let this escalate. Not this time. Not here.
You finish your breakfast in silence, both in thought. While he gets the sink ready to wash, you gather up the dishes. It almost feels like you never left. You grab the drying cloth and get ready to help dry. While waiting, you glance out the window. The mountain looms ahead, big and beautiful as normal. You can’t wait to get another crack at it. Not today, probably, but soon.
Wait. The mountain.
“Oh.” You turn to your Dad. “Is there anyone new in the village?”
“A resident?”
“I don’t know.” You shrug. “Anyone, really.”
Dad hums in thought for a moment before passing you a plate. “I believe Tanaka said he saw a guest at Fuccanchi. Why?”
“I saw someone on the mountain yesterday.” You explain, leaving out the part of you actually climbing up alone. “It was late, so I stopped the car and tried to warn him not to be out late. He still went in. I’m a bit worried.”
“It is late in the season to be going up the mountain.” Dad mused. “We can ask Tanaka when we’re in the village.” He hands you another plate. You grab it and begin drying.
“Okay.”

Life And Times of Scrooge McDuck Retrospective: The New Laird of Castle McDuck! “And I’ll Remember It Poppa! There’s Always Another Rainbow!”
Tumblr media
Hello all you happy people! And welcome back to my look at the Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck! And to make up for lost time im’ doing two instalments this month, and with luck and my schedule holding out I plan to finish the main series in September, doubling up again for the last two months to finish this up.
Background wise there’s honestly not a lot this go round, as it’s less rooted in history and more Don Rosa’s need to settle an annoying flaw with continuity. Man oh man do I relate to that and having read comics for at least half my life, i’ve seen writers do this by the bucketload to fix decisions from other writers. Sometimes for the write reasons and sometimes because EVERYTHING WAS BETTER ON MY EARTH. Don Rosa, like most writers.. has done both.
Here though it’s for the good and for understandable reasons: Barks had Scrooge’s origin as a poor shoeshine boy from Glasgow.. but also had a rather famous and awesome story, the Old Castle’s Secret, that also gave them a giant ancestral castle. Rosa fixed this by having the McDuck’s having lost it due to a combination of being driven off the land by a fake ghost dog and poor turns of fourtune meaning they coudln’t pay the taxes to live there and were behind on taxes on it, hence the Whiskervilles having taken it over in part one.
But obviously the Whiskervilles coudln’t KEEP the castle as Scrooge owned it in present day, thus this chapter explains how he got it. It was a stroke of genius plot wise too as it allowed him to open each act in Scotland and using the castle to measure where Scrooge is in life: As a boy dreaming of getting it back, as a young man who while not a success succeeds at this, and as an older hardned man who realizes he simply doesn’t belong here anymore who has to leave his family’s legacy here behind to start a better one in America.
The only other real story is that a sequence here was based on the film A Matter of Life and Death, and Rosa detailed in his notes his quest to get a copy as the distribution rights here were a nightmare at the time. Thankfully that’s clearly changed as a quick look on Amazon shows both a standard DVD release, mentioned by rosa in the book and a snazzier release by the Criteron Collection are both easily available. He ended up getting a copy from Canada, and while he didn’t get any insight at least got a neat addition to his collection. Admittedly this dosen’t add much to the story, I just thought it was neat. So with all of that settled, join me after the cut as Scrooge tries to buy back his family’s legacy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And Scrooge has already arrived in Scotland, having reunited with Downy and Matilda, who as a refresher is more responsible and straightlaced here versus the 2017 incarnation.  Part of me DOES wish they hadn’t glossed over the reunion especially since this chapter is the last time we’ll see Scrooge and his Mom together before her utterly heartbreaking passing a few chapters down the road. But I get why we opened here instead: it’s a captivating open, with Scrooge speeding to the castle, his mother and sister trying to stave the rain off and time clearly of the essence. It sucks you in as we don’t know WHY Scrooge was summoned last time, only that it was bad enough he needed to come home, and thus ratchet’s up the tension until we find out shortly.
It turns out the back taxes on Castle McDuck are up and the castle is being sold., doing so with some glasses, foreshadowing his iconic specs wearing as the snow and brightness of the praries in various seasons mean his eyes are all done fucked up like mine.  The Whiskervilles are naturally not only the prospective buyer but already trying to take the property prematurely, with Fergus and Jake holding the line, because love isn’t always on time. But Hortense is and when the Whiskervilles mock her daddy and uncle, planning to tear down the castle out of spite, her response reminds us why donald is a ball of rage and badassery...
Tumblr media
Have I mentioned she’s my favorite part of this story? Because she is. Her response to scrooge being back is also just pure adorable.
Tumblr media
Scrooge does get a big reunion with his dad and uncle, getting a big hug from Fergus, if squshing his cream cheese sandwitch... and yes that’s apparently a real thing. I mean I do love me some cream cheese don’t get me wrong, but it just feels weird to put it on bread as the only thing, but I guess i’m a bit spoiled with crackers and bagels in my day and age or putting it on tosat with salmon and.. saying all of this both makes me very hungry for cream cheese. So I guess i’ts not all bad it’s just weird to me, especially since I don’t think it’d keep all that well unregrigrated but I also don’t know the times that well. Or maybe when your that poor and hungry, it dosen’t matter how good it is and maybe i’m just spoiled by my upper middle class existance. I dunno. The point is i’m going to go get me some cream cheese be back in a minute. Here have some music.
youtube
For all two of you that didn’t clear out, Fergus naturally for the time, turns out to be sexist, insisting Jake get “The Women” home.
Tumblr media
Though Rosa gets a great joke out of it by having Jake wonder if he can even reign Hortense in. And I do love Hortense’s character. Whlie i’ts simple, she’s simply an angrier version of her son without the penchant for half-assed schemes, it works and makes her stand out against the more subdued rest of the McDuck family outside of Scrooge.
Fergus explains HOW it got so bad to Scrooge: While the McDuck ancestors pooled resources to automatically pay the taxes, eventually only having two poor old men who could barely keep their family fed and a slightly less poor pulp fiction writer somewhere in America meant the taxes piled up and the Whiskervilles are within a whisker’s reach of gettng the castle, something mentioned in part 1.
It also provides a great payoff to the first part of Scrooge’s journey: while the boy bemoans only having gotten the 10,000 dollar check from the mine sale, and that will only just about cover the castle’s taxes, he feels disheratned as it’s ALL he’s accomplished.. but in a nice moment from Fergus he points it WASN’T all for nothing: Thanks to his work they get their home back. His family can move from the cramped confines of Dismal Downs back to their ancestral homeland like they always deserved. While he may of not achieved his goal of being rich yet.. he still achieved his goal of buying the castle back, the very thing that set him on this path in the first place. It’s telling though that it takes a reminder of that, that Scrooge is loosing sight of the very human, for lack of a better term, reasons he set out: while he’s finally built a better life for his family, if just so.. all he can see is that he’s not RICH. The money is starting to cloud his judgement.. and i’tll roll over him entirely before the series is over.
The Head of the Whiskervilles shows up with the Sheirff.. whose also a Whiskerville lest you thought unfair and crooked policing was a strictly american thing. But Fergus points out their too early.. and Scrooge flashes his check. And when the Head Whiskerville scoffs at a mcduck having money... Scrooge points out he didn’t believe in ghosts either and brags about his awesomeness in the first chapter, revealing what he did and leaving The SHierff pissed and the older whiskerville ready with a plan: he decide......
Tumblr media
Sadly not with children’s trading cards but with swords, and gets past the legality issue by simply challenging Scrooge’s pride and angering him into accepting. Argus, the head whiskerville whose name I just got from the comic, reveals his plan to the Shierff: While he’s dueling Scrooge Sheirff can snatch the bank statment.. though why Scrooge didn’t you know, cash it before coming and how an american banks tatment is valid in early 1900′s Scotland...
Tumblr media
So the Duel is on.. and like the money he’s made, the Duel is another Marker of how far Scrooge has come and how despite still not having made his fortune yet he’s rich with EXPERINCE. His experince fighting cattle rustlers and pirates means he has the reflexes to easily outfight his opponent.. though him saying he learned how to fight “Injun Style from Buffallo Bill”, i.e. learned how to fight like a native american from a white guy and beat Sitting Bull with it just makes me feel like i’m watching that episode of Saved by the Bell where Zach has to learn not to be racist but then thinks this outfit is acceptable.
Tumblr media
Scrooge also tracks the guy using the tracking skills he learned from the blackfeet which again feel like the picture above , but send Argus running.. only to lure Scrooge into a fight on the castle battlemnt in the pooring rain and disarming him. Luckily the spirit of Sir Quackly gives the lad his sword back and Scrooge wins the fight.. but promptly gets hit by lighting while celebrating Caddyshack style.
Tumblr media
No really Scrooge is.. or close as he got knocked into the water and is now in heaven. Sir Quackly naturally doesn’t want to see the last hope of the Clan McDuck dies and goes to talk to the tribunal of McDucks to sort it out hence the Matter of Life And Death connection.
The Tribunal is made up of former McDucks.. it turns out Scrooge is here because of Quackly: the lighting was SUPPOSED to hit the tower, distracting Argus, and they prepare to write Scrooge off because their more concerned with golf than the fact that their whole clan’s future is on the line.. which I do not get because unless you are Tiger Woods or the Film Caddyshack, golf usually is the boring garbage water of sports and this is from someone who dosen’t like sports to begin with. I do like the Missing Links of Moorshire though so there’s that. And golf episodes of shows are usually good.. the sport itself is just incredibly boring. And I sat through Mank. I know boring. I know wanting hours of my life back. Golf is the Mank of Sports.
What we get is a pretty tiresome sequence honestly: Quackly points out the tribuanls faults while their just dicks who only care about golf. Which again, Mank of sports. Or if you prefer the Cloud Atlas of sports but with SLIGHTLY less untetionall racisim and sadly much less Tom Hanks and Hugh Grant. The point is golf sucks and while I ilke the REST of this chapter this bit just dosen’t work for me and was clearly funnier in Rosa’s head, with the assholes not thinking much of Scrooge’s achievements and only liking him when they find out he’ll be a tight wad, the only funny joke in these draggy as hell three pages, not counting the start and finish of the sequence which arnet bad, as they send him back to earth with Quackly mentioning the dime, but not giving out WHY it’s important. That he has to figure out on his own and all that good stuff.
So Scrooge uses his dime to unscrew the bolts and back at the castle while Argus TRIES to pawn it off as Scrooge being a coward and depart with the bank draft....
Tumblr media
Damnnnn that’s badass, he gets the bank note back (only knowing because one of his ancestors mentioned it, though with his memory of the dying dream gone he dosen’t know WHY), and has Fergus run into town to pay the taxes tonight before any other shenanigans happen while he keeps the two scheming dogmen captive long enough for Fergus to get too far for them to catch up.  Argus plans to go with plan “Do a murder on Scrooge”.. but fines Scrooge is far from unprotected and not the only badass in his family.. I mean Hortense exists but I mean that ther’es more than two... you know what jut look at the ghost heads.
Tumblr media
So the two run for their lives..... also they forgot you know Hortense exists.. she’d revenge murder all of them and they both know it.
So with the land safe and the taxes paid so the Family can implicitly move in, we end on a beautiful sunrise as Scrooge prepares to leave soon. Despite all the setbacks and hardship Scrooge is deterimend to still make it and knows he won’t fail forever. When Fergus mentions Gold at the end of a rainbow, Scrooge takes that, and the golden dawn as a sign. WHen Fergus understandably asks if he’s sure he’ll make it this time.. we get a nice nod to Bark’s best and most notable painting “always another rainbow to close us out”
Tumblr media
It’s a beauitful and inspiring statment.. no matter what you face.. there’s always a light at the end of it. Always another opportunity, another goal to reach, another hill to climb.. and life to live... and it’s one i’ve taken to heart and always will.. and one that will land Scrooge his fortune yet.
Final Thoughts: This chapter is alright but like I said the two page sequence in heaven dosen’t really work for me. It’s just not funny enough and really shoudl’ve been trimmed down a page so we could get more character stuff with Scrooge and his family> Otherwise it’s a tightly paced thrilling chapter in Scrooge’s life, showing just how far he’s come and how far he has left to go. The DIsmal Downs chapter serve as a good marker of where Scrooge is and where he’s heading as I mentioned earlier, with this one showing that while he’s not hit his goal yet, he still got his family their true home back, beat his enmeis and is a legend to be. Ther’es always another rainbow.. and he just needs to find it. All in all a decent chapter outside those two pages, and a good setup for the next three glorious chapters.
Next Month on LIfe and Times: One is Scroogey and the other is FLINTHEART GLOMGOLD, as Scrooge meets his arch enemy and rides a motherfucking lion. And if “rides a motherfucking lion” doesn’t make you come back I do not know why you read this.  Next Time On This BLog: What is that, that Freaky Thing? It’s A naked Mole rat as we return to Kauai this time with Kim Possible and Co as Drakken tries to capture stitch and Jumba wonders if Rufus is one of his or not.
See you at the next rainbow

Hi would you like some rage about She-Ra season 5?
If the answer is no, please don’t click below. For real. Really for real. I’m not looking to piss in anyone’s Cheerios. I think if you were satisfied (or better!) with the show, that’s fantastic and I envy you. As I have always said, love what you love. My opinion is mine and means precisely nothing beyond that. If you think you may be even a little bummed reading about how someone didn’t like it, skip this post and go on with your day, I promise you’re not missing anything worthwhile.
IN A SIMILAR VEIN: If -- before, during, or after reading -- you feel inclined to argue with me, I am begging you to please not. I cannot begin to tell you how much I don’t want to be argued with on this right now. I’m still extremely disappointed and cranky, and I’m not much in the mood to have a measured, reasoned debate about my feelings. Much as my opinion has no bearing on you, your opinion has no bearing on me, and as I’m giving you the option to opt out, I’d appreciate the same courtesy. If you want to write your own post on your own blog, go nuts! Just please leave me out of it. I PREFER TO BE CRANKY AT TELEVISION SHOWS THAN PEOPLE.
The rest of you, come on down. I don’t promise coherency, but I DO promise a lot of stuff said in all-caps!
---
Hello! Thank you for joining me! We watched the remaining few episodes of She-Ra last night! I hated them! Yaaay!
What did I hate? OH HO HO MANY THINGS FRIENDS MANY THINGS. It’s not just stuff from the final couple of episodes either, I want to clarify. It’s the entire final season, settling on last few episodes like the freshly fallen snow on your front lawn that some frat boys decide to pee their names into. By the time we’d gotten to these last episodes, there was really nothing left for me but confirmation of all the shit I’d come to hate. SO THANKS I GUESS FOR PROVING ME RIGHT
Which isn’t to say there was nothing to enjoy in the final episodes! There was!
Tumblr media
5. She-Ra’s Triceps. GET BUFF GIRL. I LOVE how Adora and She-Ra look similar, but very much not identical. Adora’s no slouch when it comes to physical stuff, but they go the extra mile to show us how She-Ra is that much more. HOW RARELY DO YOU GET TO SEE A WOMAN WITH MUSCLES. I’ve been nothing but impressed by the ways the show drew the line between Adora and She-Ra, and however I felt about its handling of other elements, it didn’t let me down here.
Tumblr media
4. Sometimes A Family Is A Twink, A Lizard, And Their Imp Baby. I don’t have further commentary on this, and I need none.
Tumblr media
3. Welcome Home, Daddy. THIS WAS SO SPECTACULAR. Glimmer had, I would argue, the most realized arc in the story. It was so gratifying to see this as a culmination, not just of her own struggle with her magical power and ability to harness it, but her willingness to do what needs doing, however personally difficult. That was a stumbling point Angelica could never overcome, continually trying to micromanage and protect Glimmer rather than trusting her and recognizing her for the asset she was. Also though, more succinctly: YESSSS BITCH

2. A Shanty! THIS WHOLE SCENE WAS PERFECT NO NOTES. Just the right blend of silly and sincere, a genuine delight as even brainwashed Mermista had had enough of Sea Hawk’s shit, AND so much more clever than it seemed at first glance. THIS IS THE ONLY VALID HETEROSEXUAL RELATIONSHIP IN SHE-RA I AM NOT TAKING QUESTIONS AT THIS TIME
Tumblr media
1. Shadow Weaver. SHADOW FUCKING WEAVER. What a complicated, fascinating character, bar none the most interesting in the entire series. I do think they pulled their punch right at the very end with her, but I AM capable of remembering I’m watching a kid’s show, so I can only get so disappointed about it. Mostly, she remained a beautifully morally complex character, and she was one of my greatest personal delights from beginning to end*.
(*) Boy did this show have one single solution for mommy issues though.
THAT WAS ABOUT IT. So let’s get to why we’re all really here, and that is MY SCREAMING OH MY GOD WHERE DO I BEGIN
Nah, I know exactly where to begin.
GLIMMER AND BO JESUS MCTRISKET I AM GOING TO EXPLODE AND SHOWER THE UNIVERSE IN THE SHRAPNEL OF MY HATE
WHY IS THIS HAPPENING
WHERE DID IT COME FROM
HOW CAN I SHOVE IT BACK IN THE HATEFUL SPEWHOLE THAT SIRED THIS BULLSHIT
WHY WHY IS THIS HERE WHY IS THIS IN MY FACE WHERE MY EYES HAVE TO SEE IT FUCK ME SIDEWAYS THIS IS THE MOST UNNECESSARY SHOEHORNED IN HET ROMANCE FUCK A DOODLE NONSENSE I HAVE EVER HAD THE MISFORTUNE TO BEAR WITNESS WHAT IS IT DOING IN THIS OTHERWISE EXPONENTIALLY GAY CARTOON
WERE YOU PANDERING TO THE STRAIGHTS
WHY ARE YOU PANDERING TO THE STRAIGHTS I ASSURE YOU WE ARE COVERED BOTH HISTORICALLY AND FICTIONALLY
ALSO NEED I REMIND YOU THAT YOU HAVE ALREADY ACHIEVED HETEROSEXUAL PERFECTION
Tumblr media
NO MERMISTA NO WE ARE NOT ALL JUST LIKE OKAY WITH THIS
Oh my FUCKSTICKS, I could’ve rolled with so much more that angers/disappoints me about She-Ra’s ending if every single thing I feared about this hadn’t proved true.
AND. IT. WAS. SO. UNNECESSARY.
What exactly did pairing off Glimmer and Bo do for the story? For their characters? THIS IS THE PART THAT’S STABBING ME IN THE DELICATE WEBBING OF MY TOES. Because -- COME WITH ME A MOMENT SWEET ANGELS -- because I was under the impression that, oohhhh, I dunno, FRIENDSHIP WAS A HUGE FUCKING IMPORTANT PART OF THIS PASTEL HELLSCAPE
Is it, She-Ra? IS IT REALLY???? When not one but BOTH of your childhood friendship pairings end in romance? When you close out your five seasons with romantic relationships so painfully and specifically sown across the character landscape like an overzealous gardener turned loose on the world?
You know what you have at the end? DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU DID
Tumblr media
THIS ISN’T A BEST FRIENDS SQUAD IT’S A DOUBLE DATE THAT NEVER MERCIFULLY ENDS
And again I ask, Why?? What was it about Glimmer and Bo’s relationship that needed them to become romantic? What was LACKING that this was the solution?
THIS IS WHAT MAKES ME LOSE MY GODDAMN SHITTING MIND I AM SO FUCKING DONE WITH THIS INSIPID MYOPIC TRASHBAG OF A CONCEPT
I believed She-Ra’s entire premise about friendship, I believed it wholeheartedly, and I’m so PISSED that at the close of day, narratively, it swept it all the bin. AND YES, YES IT DID, otherwise, WHY IS IT THERE. It serves no story-based need, it serves no character-based need, it has no NEED at all. So is it meant to be a “reward” to Bo and Glimmer for winning the war, as if their lifelong friendship were not reward enough? Is it meant to show they’ve walked through the flames and emerged with stronger, deeper bonds, because of course a relationship can only go SO deep without fucking. There’s no avenue to Romantic Relationship that doesn’t simultaneously point to something lacking in Platonic Relationship, AND I AM FURY PERSONIFIED
I am so tired of this. I’m SO TIRED of this.
And it didn’t need to be there. They didn’t even TRY to give us a good reason. That may be the part that makes me the angriest. Of COURSE they hook up romantically, of COURSE their platonic love would grow into “more”.
Fuck YOU, She-Ra. I thought you were better than that. YOU WERE SO CLOSE TO BETTER THAN THAT
THEN THERE WAS CATRA
I get it, I guess. I mean, I think it’s shittily written, but I GUESS. Honestly, end of day, I just don’t care about Catra enough to really get too angry about it, particularly when as I’m so fucking incendiary over something much more important to me. But it’s also the show’s greatest creative failure, and even if I HADN’T gotten angrier at other choices, it would’ve still cut its own legs out from under it.
Catra’s “redemption” was weak and sad and did a disservice to her and everyone involved. She started self-centered and shitty, and she ended just as self-centered and shitty, only we’re fine with that now. She learned nothing and changed nothing, but also nobody ever demanded it of her, so I can only lay so much at the character’s feet. The problem is ultimately creative, where I think Noelle Stevenson got lost in her own love of the character, and somewhere along the way forgot that if you take them out that far, you have to be willing to walk them the long road back. Compare to poor Glimmer, for fuck’s sake, whose greatest sin was being desperate enough to be manipulated by the character whose entire fucking DEAL is being THE manipulator. How much shit did she get for that? How long was she punished? Meanwhile Catra becomes THE Big Bad for a while, nearly unravels all of reality in a fit of supreme lesbian angst and self-pity, directly leads to the death of the planet’s ruling monarch who also happens to be GLITTER’S MUM and DIRECT FRIEND TO THE SHOW’S HEROES, but that’s fine, you did one sorta good thing one time and even though it was also wrapped in a thick film of self-pity and a final fuck-you at Adora, all is forgiven!
Speaking of, Adora suffers just as much from stunted growth. From the beginning, her thing was control, unable to free herself from the responsibility of everything and everyone. What did we have at the end? Adora as the only one who could save everything and everyone. Yeah, they kept asking what it was SHE wanted, BUT THEN SHE NEVER ACTUALLY GOT TO CHOOSE. NOT activating the failsafe wasn’t an option for her, and while she wound up not having to die to do it, even that wasn’t her choice in the end, it was Catra’s. (Don’t even get me started on her nth hour “You love me?” fuckery when it wasn’t once for one single second shown to be a question of such life-turning importance.)
All of which could be interesting! That Catra and Adora went through all this, came so far to wind up right where they started? AWESOME. LOVE IT. FUND IT. But really all that happens is nobody minds now that Catra’s a self-involved little shit and tee-hee another Best Friends Squad Mission being bullrushed by Adora within five minutes of ending the last one isn’t that funny?
I can’t even dig much enjoyment out of Adora and Catra as a trope subversion (if one of them was a male, their romantic involvement wouldn’t have even been a QUESTION), because the show lost its fucking mind with romantically pairing everybody off in the final five minutes. WHICH BRINGS ME RIGHT BACK TO MY PREVIOUS SCREAMING SO I’LL STOP THERE.
There was other stuff, of course. I think it was a TERRIBLE decision to spend the last season with the focus split between the two groups of rebels, and writing half the cast into brainwashing. I think the Nettossa and Spinnerella stuff was wasted and lacked any punch at all because the show for some reason or another couldn’t be bothered to let us spend any time with them to care. The waste of Scorpia and Mermista especially (to people named Jet Wolf who are me) was fucking CRIMINAL. Speaking of Scorpia, wouldn’t her showdown with Bo have been so much more poignant if they’d had really any kind of interaction before that moment to build from? (Sure, it’s Scorpia, so if you’re going to sell the lack of context with anyone it’s her, BUT ALSO.) Hey, remember Huntara? No? NEITHER DID THE SHOW.
All my details aside though, MY MANY MANY MANY DETAILS, what kills/rages me most about She-Ra was how so much potential from the first four seasons was just flushed away. Whether it was the creative team shooting itself in the foot or corporate pressure and rushing from Netflix, I don’t know. I don’t CARE. This is the show I was given, so this is the show I have, and that kind of fall after that kind of potential doesn’t just irritate me, it makes me SAD. I wouldn’t be this disappointed if I didn’t think it could have been -- WAS -- so much more.
Time will tell if I can separate out the final season from how much I loved those that came before it. I like to hope so, because I did love it intensely and loved whenever I got the chance to really dig in and talk about it.
WHATEVER ELSE I SUPPOSE I WILL ALWAYS HAVE THIS
Tumblr media
Again please remember that I am not at present looking to argue or debate my feelings and opinions. I get to just be angry and disappointed, as a treat!

jaliceweek20 day 1: human/vampire
Title: Against A Wall (Part 1)
Prompt 1: Human/Vampire
Word Count: 3,851
Note: I’m going into hospital tomorrow, and I’ve run out of time to get this finished (so, so close but I need sleep). So I cut it in half in the most logical place.
As long as the JaliceWeek Mods don’t have an issue, I’ll finish off Part 2 and upload the whole fic to the AO3 collection around Tuesday when I’m feeling human and have a decent Wifi connection.
Fifteen.
He crouches behind Dewey’s Bar, spitting blood onto the pavement, and trying to pretend that whatever is seeping into his jeans is just water, and not runoff from the reeking dumpster beside him.
It’s Tuesday night, and Tuesdays are always the worst. Tuesdays are his mom’s night shifts at the VA hospital. Tuesdays are pay-day. Tuesdays are the only day his father doesn’t pull his punches.
His left cheek and eye are swollen and split, like overripe fruit. He can’t see real well, and the taste of aluminium foil in the back of his mouth makes him suspect another fracture around his eye.
But was it really a Tuesday night if cerebral fluid wasn’t leaking into his mouth?
He feels bad that his mother is going to walk in at five the next morning, exhausted, to find… well, to find Hettie and Flo asleep in Ava’s bed, as Ava studies and worries. To find Jasper’s bed empty, and Lydia’s too. To find the study door locked, no matter how long she knocks.
In fact, the only thing that Louise Whitlock won’t find when she gets home from work is the god-damned strength of will to leave her fucking husband.
Last time he said that to her face, she started to cry, and that made things worse.
It’s still early, which sucks. There are hours to go until it is safe to move, to drag himself to school, to shower in the locker rooms and get some food out of the vending machine and savour the fact that another Tuesday is behind him. Sheldon isn’t big enough for the other students and the teachers not to notice the bruises on his face, but it is small enough that everyone knows Jeremiah Whitlock, and no one is going to say anything to get him in trouble.
He could go find Lydia, hide in the tree-house, tell someone who wasn’t family or a local. But he always ends up behind Dewey’s. When he was a kid, it hadn’t just been a bar; it had been been Dewey’s Bar and Grill, and his grandfather used to take him there for fried chicken and ice cream. Dewey had been his Grandpa Jed’s best friend, but even in those halcyon days it hadn’t exactly been family-friendly.
It had become a dive bar sometime around the time Jasper finished middle-school, but it didn’t matter - by then, Dewey and Grandpa were dead, and he was too busy trying to protect himself and his sisters to eat ice cream.
He spits blood again, and rests back against the brickwork. Nothing for it; Tuesdays were always hell.
He tries to sleep, amongst the noise of passersby, and remain unnoticed - Jasper’s learnt the hard way that his uncles still frequent Dewey’s, and they will march him straight back home for round two, no matter what he says. Even when he came up with the strength to tell them, about Lydia and Jerry and Tuesday nights, his uncles just tell him to shut up, man up, and maybe Jerry wouldn’t have to whoop his ass.
He thinks of Lydia and hopes she’s somewhere warm and clean tonight. Lydia’s smart enough to stay away on Tuesday nights. Home is never Lydia’s first port of call any night of the week, but never, ever on Tuesdays.
He remembers the last Tuesday night she was home, two summers ago, when Lydia stormed upstairs, a twelve-year-old hurricane with fire in her eyes, and called their father a coward for beating the shit out of Jasper.
Jeremiah Whitlock hadn’t liked being called a coward. Not at all.
Now she is transient, a ghost sister who vanishes at day break; one who bunks down on couches and in treehouses before coming back to her own bed. Their mom and Ava worry about where Lydia gets her money, cigar-sized rolls of dollar bills that she keeps in a tampon box, but he knows.
He knows that his sharp and pointy little sister never let anything stop her, least of all hard work, and that a lot of people in town know that Jerry Whitlock has a lot of anger and a lot of disappointment that he tries to drown in cheap beer and cheaper whiskey. It just makes him angrier. If the only thing they can do is give Lydia Whitlock some work, well, that kid’ll cut the grass, paint the garage, and walk the dog for a few bucks and a drink from a spigot.
It’s easy to say that Lydia is the best of them, making it clear that she doesn’t need their shitty father or their tired mother, but they are all strong in different ways. Ava, who smiles and simpers at their father, waiting for that day when she can buckle Hettie and Flo into her car and take them with her to college in Houston with a middle finger raised in the air. Flo stays quiet, stays alert, darting and hiding when the moment comes, but whose slight of hand belongs to a survivalist magician. And sweet little Hettie, who never lived on the ranch and knew their parents when they were happy, is sunshine and laughter and innocence. The one that reminds them why they stick together.
He’s the boy, so his role is obvious and unquestioned: he takes the punches and slaps and kicks that were meant for their mom, for Lydia, for Flo. He mutters things under his breath so that Jerry doesn’t hear what his sisters are saying, forgets that Hettie is sniffling or that Lydia hasn’t been home in ten days or that their mother has burnt dinner.
He knows his place.
—-
If you asked anyone with the surname ‘Whitlock’, they’d tell you that the family was cursed.
Had been since the Civil War; the youngest son had run off and joined up. Tried to desert two months in, crying for his momma, and ran afoul of someone - or something. He was dead a month later, but no one was exactly sure if he’d been executed for desertion, or if he’d just got in the way of a Yankee bullet. Either way, his last letter was rambling and terrified of something he never named, and his cowardice was rewarded with his bloodline’s constant suffering.
Within the Whitlock family lore, the curse was held accountable for numerous failings - from great-great grandmother Edith running off with one of the Wilkerson boys, to little Brian dropping dead as a doornail one summer day after seven years of perfect health. It was the Whitlock Curse to blame the day the bank took the ranch away from Jasper’s own father.
It was the curse that had four and a half strapping brothers (Uncle Wyatt only counted as half since he went to the war in the Middle East and got himself blown up before he was even old enough to drink, and left behind a high school sweetheart with a bouncing baby girl they all called ‘Puddin’) father fifteen girls, and only one lousy boy.
Make no mistake about it, Jasper was a lousy heir to the Whitlock name. All three of his uncles reminded him of this every holiday season. Whitlock men were supposed to live and breathe the ranch, were supposed to be football players and champions. They were meant to knock up the head cheerleader and serve eight years in the army, like their brothers, fathers, uncles, and grandfathers before them.
Not snivelling little momma’s boys, who cried themselves to sleep when Sirius Black died, and could charm the birds from the trees. Not boys who helped their sisters catch rabbits, and keep them as secret pets, or name the house cat Socrates. Not boys who sat up all night when their horse had colic, and sit in the stable with her, begging and praying for her to be okay.
He tried, goddamnit. So hard. He was the best shot in the family (something that Uncle Bo had nearly hit him over, that one Thanksgiving. But everyone knew that Bo had the worst temper in the family.) Before things went to shit, he’d been a good student. He’d been able to convince the animals on the ranch to do anything. He was popular, without having any particular friends or putting much effort into it. He took care of his sisters.
But none of it was ever good enough.
Nothing ever was.
It’s Roy Lester that chases him off, before six the next morning. Roy runs the grocer next to Dewey’s, and went to school with his father and uncles - still had beers with them ever so often. The way he threatened Jasper and chased him off home whenever he caught him in the alley made Jasper think that they talked about him, and none of it flattering.
So he has to slink home because he stinks and he’s starving. The security at school won’t let anyone in before seven; he’s tried before; it’s not like he has much choice.
In a town like Sheldon, everyone knew everyone. You started kindergarten with maybe twenty other five year olds - most you probably already knew - and spent the next thirteen years with those same kids. You watched Maude Montgomery transform from the aesthetic-equivalent of Danny Devito to Jennifer Lawrence in a single summer, thanks to a late brush with puberty; you were right there when Casey Atkinson was put in a wheelchair and spent seventh grade learning to walk again. You knew that Ariel Turner was diabetic, Marley Harris was asthmatic, and you’d seen thirteen years of peanut-free lunches and birthday parties because Joey Thompson was highly allergic.
The joy of small towns.
Everyone knew that Jerry Whitlock hit his kids and his wife, but no one talked about it - not to their faces, at least. The adults tended to march Jasper home, to face his father’s wrath. The kids tended to get uncomfortable, and look through him. The few people who tried to reach out were from out of town, and were usually passing through - the odd teacher, a new neighbour, a concerned face on the bus.
Better to go home until school opened up.
Louise is in the kitchen, her face pinched and pale, clutching a cup of coffee. She looks hopeful when he walks in, but seems to crumple in on herself when she sees his bloody, swollen face. She looks old as she puts down her mug, and moves to pull him into a hug. He pretends not to notice her shuddering, as she cries onto his shoulder, before pulling away.
“I’ll make breakfast,” she manages, sniffling. “Okay? You must be hungry.”
He grunts and nods, as he heads upstairs. As if scrambled eggs and burnt toast can fix another Tuesday night.
But Wednesdays are good - the longest possible time until another Tuesday night.
He just has to keep telling himself that.
Seventeen.
Another Tuesday behind Dewey’s, but this time he’s puking up the few mouthfuls of food he managed before his father hauled him out the back - only because it was his mom’s week off and they were having a big family dinner. Louise resented those mid-week dinners; after a long day at work, having to make dinner for twenty-three people, and somehow find enough plates and chairs was the last thing she wanted to do. It was the only time Lydia would cross their father’s sight line, skinny and defiant.
If it had been a normal dinner, Jerry wouldn’t have dragged him out of the house. He would have beat him in the kitchen, yelling over Hettie’s sobs and Flo’s screams, and Louise’s pleading. He’s had a serving platter smashed over his head before, as well as a beer bottle, and a ceramic pitcher - one that had been made by Grandma Lillian, and Louise had sobbed over those broken shards.
His head is spinning, and he can’t remember exactly what he said to incite his father’s rage, though he remembers Uncle Bo’s jeers when he tried to stand up. The previous week’s wounds have reopened, and are bleeding onto his last decent t shirt. There’s vomit and alley-juice all over his jeans, and he wonders if he should drag himself to the hospital because his world is still spinning.
He wonders what will happen if he dies tonight; if Roy Lester finds him here in the morning, cold and dead. Most of the cops in town are from old families, and they’ve taken Lydia and Jasper back home enough times to know what goes on. It’s easier to picture the cover-up, that they’ll blame him and a make-believe schoolyard fight. Just a tragic accident.
Maybe then someone will help Lydia, help all of his sisters. Maybe it’ll be the thing that makes his mom leave.
He falls asleep facedown in the alley, and wants to cry when he wakes up the next morning to the bellow of school kids heading to the bus stop.
He was so goddamned close to it all being over.
So close.
“Do you need some help?”
It’s another Tuesday night, one that has come with busted ribs and possibly a dislocated shoulder. He missed lunch because of an English project, and his father had been drinking early, so he hasn’t eaten since breakfast. It’s making him feel sick, and wondering if anyone will notice if he sneaks in the back door of Dewey’s and grab some food.
And then someone is there and talking to him.
Her voice is high and sweet, and he expects a high school girl, maybe a sorority sister.
She is neither.
She’s only as tall as Flo, with uneven black hair curling around her cheeks. She’s one of the prettiest girls he has ever seen, with huge amber-coloured eyes that remind him of Hettie’s dolls and Lydia’s manga. She’s wearing a ragged button-up over a ruffled mini-skirt and leggings, with boots that look a size too big, a heavy man’s watch that hangs from her tiny wrist, and an ancient looking cadet’s cap - the entire effect makes him think of Oliver Twist as a female circus performer.
She walks over to him, and crouches in front of him, her head cocked to the side like a bird’s. He can only stare; other than the dark smudges under her eyes that speak of many sleepless nights, she is beautiful.
“Are you okay?” she asks, looking worried.
“Yeah,” he croaks, and winches as he jars his ribs. He doubles over, and cries out. She reaches out towards him but backs off just as suddenly.
“You’re hurt,” she says, looking bewildered and frightened. “Where?”
“I-It’s okay,” he manages, trying to reclaim his dignity in front of the prettiest girl. “I’ll be fine.”
The girl huffs. “Ugh, boys,” she mutters. “Hold on a second.” She gets up and slips out of the alley before he can beg her not to get help. In reality, going to the hospital is the last thing he should do - they can’t afford the bill, and  they’ll call home and… no. Just no.
His head is spinning, so he finds it hard to tell how much time has passed, but eventually she returns. She’s clutching two bags, and marches right up to him and crouches back down.
“This will help,” she says, holding out painkillers and a bottle of water. He fumbles with the lids of both, but eventually swallows the pillows down. She watches him carefully. “Don’t drink too fast,” she advises. “Now, I can put your shoulder back in now, or we can wait. It’s up to you.”
He blinks at her slowly. “Now,” he decides.
“Okay,” she looks nervous, but moves forward. It’s all blurry in his mind, but there is something cold, then hot, angry pain, and then he’s blinking up at her again. “Sorry. But trust me, the worst is over now. At least I didn’t break it worse. Hungry?”
He blinks as she reaches for the other bag - a bag of Skittles, a packaged sandwich, two oranges, and a bag of potato chips. He’s not sure if he has a concussion or it’s an odd selection, but he’s also hungry enough that he doesn’t care.
“I nearly had to call Bella, to ask what to get - Edward never let me buy her food after the chicken incident - which was entirely Emmett’s fault - but I think I figured it out okay,” the girl jabbers, taking a seat beside him, and smiles at him. “Better no one knows where I am, anyway.”
“I… thanks,” he croaked, as he reached for the sandwich. She beams at him again, and then frowns.
“Eat, then we’ll finish patching you up. I’ve come too far to watch you die in this disgusting place,” she stretches her legs out in front of her.
The sandwich is dry, but he wolfs it down - an orange too, before he takes a breath - that hurts - and takes another look at the tiny girl beside him.
“Who are you?” he finally asks, and she looks up from her watch.
“Oh! I’m Alice,” she says. “Sorry, I forgot you didn’t know. Do you want your ribs taped now, or are you going to open those?” She points to the Skittles.
“Um, I…” he looks at the bag of candy. “Do you want some?” This feels like a fever dream; maybe he’s passed out and this is just what his banged-up brain has provided him with.
“No,” she shakes her head, and the cadet’s cap tilts a little on her head. “I can’t. They just looked nice. Happy.”
“Happy,” he echoes, looking at the red package.
“I hear that sometimes little things can help,” Alice says. “Come on, cowboy, take that shirt off and let me see those ribs.”
His side is mottled black and blue and purple, and moving in basically any direction is a new adventure in pain. Alice gasps at the sight, and then coos at him in a way that is oddly comforting as her fingers trace his ribs - the coldness of her fingers is actually wonderful against the pain. Then comes the painful stage - as she, not entirely gently enough, begins layering tape over the pain, his head is spinning.
“All done,” Alice says, and her voice is soft, and when he slumps against her shoulder, she doesn’t move away. She smells like old fashioned things, like roses and linen. It reminds him of the old family homestead. He finds his eyes closing, and his side aches in time with his heart, and then Alice’s gentle fingers are running through his hair.
“Sleep, Jasper,” she murmurs, “I’ll keep watch.”
He’s asleep before he realises he never told her his name.
She’s gone when he wakes up, and the Skittles are in his pocket - along with the painkillers. Happy.
It’s Wednesday morning, and it’s not exactly ‘happy’ he’s feeling, but he’s got candy in his pocket and time to go home for a shower and more food, so Alice was right - the little things do help.
She never turns up two Tuesdays in a row, but he does see her again. She’s always more prepared than the first time, with a bag that always seems to contain exactly what they need - in his less lucid states, he is reminded of Mary Poppins’ magic carpet bag as she produces snacks and first aid kits, and even clothing.
Her attempts at first aid are, at best, rough and she accidentally breaks two of his fingers and nearly ends up in tears when he yells in pain, and hugs him so tight, weeping into his neck, that he ends up trying to comfort her.
Sometimes he sleeps. She’s so thin and tiny that her shoulder isn’t a good pillow, and he feels like a shit man, letting such a tiny girl keep watch behind a bar. It wouldn’t take much to break her, and he can’t defend anyone in this state.
But some Tuesdays, he falls asleep anyway, breathing in that scent of fresh roses and linen, and listening to her chatter away about people he doesn’t know, about places he’s never visited, about books he’s never read.
Alice sounds like she’s living a really nice life. One week, she quizzes him on his Spanish before his examine the next day, and her accent is flawless. When her phone buzzes and buzzes and buzzes, and she ignores it, she usually swears - he doesn’t know in what language, one of the Eastern Asian ones he thinks - but it’s definitely a swear.
He wishes he could see her, talk to her, out in the real world and prove to her that he’s not just a beat-up kid. But she’s always gone on Wednesday mornings, and he doesn’t even know how to contact her anyway.
All in all, he met Alice in the reeking alley behind Dewey’s with a concussion, broken ribs, and a dislocated shoulder, and now she’s the best friend he’s ever had in the world.
He’s getting closer to that ‘happy’ concept that she mentioned the first time they met.
The last time he sees her, he’s bleeding and he’s pretty sure his eye socket is fractured. He’s pissed with himself because he wasn’t fast enough, smart enough, to stop his father from going after Flo. So he’d thrown a punch at his old man  for the first time because Flo is his baby sister and all haunted eyes and he’ll never forget the sounds of her wailing after the belt struck her, but hitting the bastard back just fuelled him and … fuck.
Then Alice is there, in jeans with stars on the knees and a billowy purple top that is just opaque enough to obscure the skin underneath. She looks angry and frustrated, and doesn’t just sit next to him and open her bag like she usually does.
“It’s a stupid fucking decision you’re about to make,” she stamps her foot, “and I am so mad at you right now, but Carlisle and Edward have made me promise not to interfere. Carlisle says that everything I’m doing now is enough. And I’m already in enough trouble, honestly.”
He can taste foil again - definitely a fractured eye socket.
“What?” he manages, snappish and tired. He doesn’t need this. He wants sweet Alice, who helps him patch himself back together, and gets him food, and talks him to sleep. The one who makes him laugh, even when it hurts, and seems to be light-years ahead of him but that’s okay because she’s always so happy about whatever she’s telling him.
“I’m going to say this once,” she enunciates carefully, still glaring. “I will be here every Tuesday. Don’t make a dumb decision. There is always another choice.”
“You’re making less sense than normal,” he retorts. “Either help me, or go away - I’m not in the mood.”
“Happy freakin’ birthday,” she snaps, unbuckling her giant watch, and throws it at him before she storms back the way she came, leaving him behind.

Armada Review episode 5-8
I am putting the read more so that you do not have to read all of this if you do not want to. This is a review for episodes 5-8  season 1 and again, a reminder, these are my thoughts, if you don’t agree with what I have to say that fine but please respect my thought and opinions on what I think about the serious.
So to start this up let go in order
Episode 5 Soldier:
So with Soldier, this episode focused a lot on Red Alert, Hotshot, Optimus, and their relationship. We learn about Red being a chef science engineer which brought up a question, does that really make Red a medic? I mean, sure they are robots so you could say that that would make him a medic, but in other transformers, they call them medics, so a question I like to ask you all and see if you guy can answer this question, is Red Alert a medic or is he just a mech who had to learn both engineer and medical seen there no one on their team right now really a medic.
Anyway, we notice right away Hotshot and Red not getting a lot and having some problem working together, we see Red as being tight follow the book like Magnus and we see Hotshot being this go luckily relaxed kid like Rodimus.
We also learn about how close Red and Prime's relationship is when they talk about fighting side by side in the war which I thought was a very amazing touch to the episode and that Red is really a good person who can kick ass, and do good. Then you have the Decepticons who are just treating Starscream like trash, teasing him about not having a min con and going as far as not wanting to listen to him which I thought was brought back wonderful in the episode Jungle which we will talk about in a bit but for now, we just see Megatron as normal treating Starscream badly and not even telling the other to listen to him, which in turn make Starscream want to prove himself to Megatron and which unfortunately cause him to fail in the end when he gets beat by Red and is not able to get the min con. We also get some foreshadowing of a clue of what the next min con will be but I won't talk about that till I get to the last episode but had to say that it was an interesting idea and is pretty cool.
Overall this episode was alright, the animation again, was a little bit over the place but I say it not a skip episode because you do learn a thing about the Autobots and learn a thing about the Depictions.
Episode 6 Jungle:
*sigh* Well, everyone let buckle up for safety because we about to get into an environmental episode and I like to talk about this before I talk more about this episode. I hate environmental episodes only because it always feels repetitive and it always makes me think of the Nostalgia critic reviews where the tv or movie is so bad because of the environmental episode and that they really don’t care about the message but have to but it just because they have too.
So with that out of the way, was it that bad?
Tumblr media
I mean, it not good, but there is some part I feel made it not as awful. So the plot of this episode is they have to find a min con in the forest and the kids point out that they have to be careful in the forest and to not hurt the living things that are there, and it made me think for a moment wow, do you think the Autobot or any of this bots care about the forest as they destroyed there whole home because of a war, I don’t think they give two shit but as I watch the episode, I notice something about Optimus...he does care, he even said: “This planet looks peaceful from a glance but it has some serious problems.” I might be going deep on this, might but hear me out on what I think he meant by thought words.
I think at that moment he was thinking about Cybertron. For a glance a long time ago, you would have said the same thing, but after the war, and how much fighting they still are doing, it looks awful and sad. The fighting is causing a lot of problems and hurting others, it hurting living being, hell the min con had to leave because they were being used as weapons just like you could say about the forest being chop down for things that might be good at first but will harm everything later on if we not careful.
So yeah, the Deception, of course, they are cutting down the tress to get to the min con and of course we get to the part I want to talk about, Starscream being treat like trash and not being taken seriously. We get a glimpse of this in the episode when there doing a simulation and Starscream is trying to tell the other what they need to do, asking them to let him do something, to have them trust him but they don’t listen which cause him to lose the simulation and be scolded by Megatron!!
Which then again, makes Starscream, even more, determined to get a min con to prove why he is the second in command and should be listening too and it somewhat looks like Starscream looking for power but really in this episode he in the right to do that. Why because he has been treated awful, no one listens to him, Megatron has undermined him so many times that when he does and this is a spoiler. When he does get his min con Swindle which I think is a great name because Starscream names him that because he Swindles Megatron out of min con he could have used and Starscream get a really powerful one that works with him and listen to everything he asks it to do, and once he does the team start to listen to him and follow his orders. He so happy and start to get respect out of fear, which is sad because he shouldn’t have to scare them into listening to him but because Megatron would not make them listen to him and he saw Megatron get respect out of fear he thinks this is the only way to get everyone to respect him and which is why I also think he says he might be even more powerful than Megatron. Which make Megatron even angrier and maybe even get him to be more paranoid.
So yeah, this episode was awful with its speech about saving the environment, and yeah it can be a bit corny with them fighting in a forest hunting for the min con, and fighting Megatron the big old deer of the forest. (Had to put that joke in sorry.) But overall it was an okay episode and it wasn’t that bad...now for the next one well.
Episode 8 Carnival
Tumblr media
I’m sorry, watch this episode twice, twice to find the meaning of this episode, to give it a reason why you should watch this episode and I just can’t.
Again this is my own opinion, but this episode was not that good. It not awful, but it not good. Like, I love finding out Hotshot loves to watch old western, I thought that was cool, I even thought it was cool and spoiler, about him using the canon at the Carnival as his new guy that he shot with know and play western with. That cute! I love him being smug with the bullies. But this episode was bad!
The humans were dumb as bricks when they min con and Hotshot show up to the Carnival, because yeah, for a while it made seen when they sneaked out the min con to the Carnival to have some fun rather than having to stay in the base cleaning up with Alexia. Yeah, it was kinda silly how the human thought they were something that came from the sciences department and that there was clueless. But when Billy and Fred when after the min con to take them because they knew they were not science department gimmicks to help them get more funding or something like that, had them “malfunctioning” around them Carnival which scared a lot of people to run away and to have Hotshot trying to get them to leave Jolt alone, Jolt flying them, them dropping off onto a ballon and having Hotshot later save them while flying around, you can not tell me the military was not call out for that little stunt or that the people that live in this town are that dumb!
Like yeah, they are panting them that way so they can get away with things sure. But maybe it just because I was spoiled by Transformers Prime seriously but looking back on that it scary and the worst part, they don’t get yelled at by Optimus but at Alexia, Optimus should have been yelling at Hotshot and the boys! Telling them that was dumb!
So is this episode have anything worth it? Well, it shows the difference between how the Autobot work as a team to fix up the base vs the Deception who are just fighting during the whole time there fix the base, put Demoloisher down for being clumsy, which he is but he only fell down because he didn’t want to step on a min con, which I did check in the animation and thought that was interesting, he cares not letting the min con get hurt and I don’t care what anyone says, I think that kinda sweet but sad as he scolds and tases about him falling down, we later in the last episode will talk more about Demolisher and I thought it was cool about the foreshadowing spoiler about the Star Saber sword min con that going to come into play later down the next few episodes.
Overall this episode was bad but if you want to see it for thought reason I won’t blame you but I will not also blame you if you skip it.
Finally, the last episode I watch for this review is episode 8 Palace.
This episode was beautiful!!!
Tumblr media
Like I could go on and on about the animation, it was the best one so far and I think that was because they focused a lot on the robots. The music was amazing too like it made me feel like a little kid again while watching it.
So, the story was also interesting about how min con was thought of as a gift or some type of spiritual being that was probably thought of as a god or something like that, and this episode my sibling Jamie who was watching this, geek out about her Anthropologie stuff, and before you ask no they are not an Anthropology that study Egypt, in fact, they are a Mayan Cultural Anthropologies but they did remember something from there class and nerd out with me. Anyway, we just love the way they did the building, we love the fight scenes.
Demolisher was somewhat cool in this episode too, all he wanted to do was get the min con for his own and he really tired his best, I even felt bad for him having to give it back to Megatron, I also felt like it was not fear but then again, Megatron is scared of being out powered by anyone and even thought he could challenge Starscream or order him to give it to him, it would look bad and would look like he taking his word away (even thought I’m sure he wouldn’t care about that he know for breaking it) but still maybe he was afraid of Starscream betraying him or thought maybe Demolisher couldn’t handle such a thing, or that he might both might betray Megatron whatever the case might be.
I felt sorry for Demolisher and sorry for when he spoke up agents him, that it piss of Megatron enough to want to punish him which Starscream laugh and it supose to be a funny scene but it really scary because when you think about it Starscream not laugh because it funny but because he scared.
When people are scared they sometime laugh because Starscream know how bad a beating Megatron can give when he don’t get what he wants and I just thought that was also very interesting.
I might later down the road when we get to more episodes might do a break down some of the transformers and what I thought about them throw this serious and point out the thing that I think is very interesting to me and might even say something I think are canon for them. But anyway. I think this was my favorite animated so far and I say give it a watch if not for the story then for the beautiful animation!
Next Monday I’ll be reviewing 9-13 (Yes five this time because we're getting close to the end of season one!) Thank you all for reading my review on this serious I hope you all like this and have a good night.

Chapter 4:
Tumblr media
The group had made their way over to the front of the barn where they could hear the undeniable groans of walkers emitting from within, confirming that what Glenn had just told them to be true. Lori’s hold on Carl tightens as she stands beside Carol, both women looking at the barn with a shared expression of fear and horror. Gloria, mounted on the crutches, stands with T-Dog, Andrea, Dale and Glenn, Daryl in front of her, making sure she stays behind him. Rick and Shane are right in front of the barn doors, inspecting it and discussing what they should do.
“I’ll talk to Hershel, we’ll figure this out, we will.” Rick says aloud for everyone to hear.
“No, we need to get off this farm, it’s too dangerous to stay here now,” Shane objects, visibly getting angrier and more frustrated by the second, “we should have left for Fort Benning a long time ago!”
Rick grabs onto Shane’s arm, “we can’t leave here, not yet.”
Shane scoffs and pushes Rick off him, “and why not?”
“Because Sophia’s still out there.” Carol cries out, taking a step towards the two men.
Shane lets out a breath, sighing, “Alright... you know what, I think we need to face the facts, face reality, okay? Chances are Sophia’s dead.”
“Hey, I’m close to finding this girl. I just found her damn doll two days ago!” Daryl exclaims in rage.
Shane scoffs at this, “You found her doll, Daryl. That’s what you did, you found a doll. Finding Gloria alive was a damn miracle, we ain’t gonna find Sophia, not after all this time! Not alive at least.”
“Man, ya don’ know what the hell ya talkin’ ‘bout!” Daryl shouts.
“I’m just saying what needs to be said!” Shane shouts back.
Unable to hold her rage back any longer, Gloria starts to hobble up to Shane, “Shane, stop being such an asshole and just shut up!”
He glares at her and walks up to her, “you look me in the eye and tell me you still believe Sophia’s actually alive.” he challenges her.
Not faltering one bit, Gloria says through gritted teeth, “would you be able to say that to Lori’s face if it were Carl who went missing?” something changes in Shane when he hears her question, he stays silent, making it obvious that his answer is a negative, “then why do you think it’s okay for you to say any of that shit around Carol?”
Shane stares down at the ground as he backs away from Gloria, ashamed, unable to look at anyone.
“Alright, that’s enough.” Rick tries to diffuse the tension, “I’ll go talk to Hershel about this, I know we’re all worried about the barn, but it’s still Hershel’s property, and we have to respect that.”
Everyone, even Shane, nods in agreement. Gloria’s still glaring at Shane, her chest heaving in rage. She looks away when she feels a hand on her arm, seeing Carol smiling softly at her, silently thanking her for standing up for her. Gloria forces a smile back and nods, telling her that it’s going to be okay. The group parts ways from the barn, each to do their own things. Gloria hobbles her way over to Dale who’s at his RV.
“Hey Dale.” she calls him.
Dale smiles at her, “Hey Gloria, how’s it feel to walk with three legs?”
“Never better!” she laughs, “so, you’re old... and you know things-” Dale’s laugh interrupts her.
“You and Glenn really are siblings, he said the exact same thing to me when he first told me about the barn.” Dale grins, amused.
Gloria chuckles at this, “yeah, he copies me a lot.” she says, adjusting her spot on her crutches.
“So what are you looking for this old wise man for?” he smiles.
“Well, just wanted to see what you thought about the whole situation, with the barn, with Sophia, us staying,” she purses her lips, furrowing her brows.
Dale sighs at this, “well, we’ll deal with the barn eventually one way or another, but whether it’s a good way is a whole other story. Personally, I’d like it if we could all stay here, and as for Sophia...” he pauses, “I honestly don’t know what to think.”
Gloria looks down and nods. She then looks over towards the chicken coop as she notices Glenn walking out from it, holding his hat with his hair coated in egg.
“Did you get attacked by a hen?” Gloria blinks, amused.
He looks at her, “Yeah... a pissed off hen. She’s mad that I told everyone about the barn.”
Dale grabs his hat from the RV and hands it to Glenn, “here, you can wear this for now.”
“Thanks.” he says solemnly.
“Hey, it’ll be okay. If you want, I can try talking some sense into Maggie for you.” Gloria hops, adjusting herself on her crutches again.
Glenn shrugs, “I don’t even know if that would help anything, I broke a promise, remember?”
“You did, but it was for the greater good. Leave it to me, you know how convincing I can be.” Gloria smiles reassuringly.
Glenn smiles a bit, rolling his eyes at her confidence. From behind Glenn, Gloria spots Daryl storming out from the horse stables and Carol looking after him with a concerned look on her face. Gloria excuses herself and makes her way towards Carol, wanting to ensure that she was alright.
“Daryl wants to go out and find Sophia but he’s still heavily injured.” Carol says once she spots Gloria, running to her.
Gloria ponders, not knowing what’s the right thing to say, “w-we still need to find Sophia...”
“But I don’t want anyone else to get hurt.” Carol says, tears threatening to spill from her eyes.
Gloria balances her body on her crutches then places a hand on Carol’s shoulder, “listen, no one else is going to get hurt, Daryl just got unlucky because of the horse he took and I was just careless, but that’s not going to happen to anyone else, okay?”
Carol wipes her tears that ended up falling then nods, “thank you... thank you.”
“I’ll take care of Daryl, you go over to Rick and Glenn and ask them to put together a search party, alright? We’ll find her.” Gloria says confidently.
Carol nods, a small smile on her lips, then she does as Gloria instructed and goes to find Glenn. Gloria makes her way to find Daryl at his tent that’s set up further away from the others, he’d always liked to be apart from the rest of the group. Daryl was packing up his arrows, his crossbow already slung on his back, getting ready to head out.
“Hey.” Gloria calls out as she stumbles to his area, “where’re you going?” she asks, playing dumb.
“Where do ya think?! Goin’ to find that lil’ girl!” he shouts at her, annoyed that she even had to ask such a question.
“You’re not going alone,” she stops right in front of him, “you’re still injured.”
Daryl scowls at her, “are ya gonna try an’ stop me?”
Gloria shakes her head, “nope, I’m not exactly in any condition to stop you.”
He looks at her and scoffs, then turns to leave without saying anything else. Gloria just turns in his direction and starts to follow him. Daryl turns around to look at her again when he hears that he’s being followed.
“The hell ya think you’re doin’?” Daryl asks, frowning at her.
She doesn’t stop hobbling towards him, “I told you that you’re not going alone, I’m coming with you.”
“Nah, ya ain’. Go back to the house.” he orders, pointing in the direction of the house.
Gloria finally makes it to him, “are you going to try and stop me?”
Daryl sighs out of frustration, “we gotta find that lil’ girl!”
“I know that! Don’t think for a second that I don’t want to find her, but Carol... she was crying to me, she doesn’t want anyone else to get hurt, Daryl.” she sighs, ”We all know you’re a badass and probably the best tracker we have, but right now you aren’t at full potential because you’re hurt, and we can’t afford to lose you. We just can’t. I had Carol get Rick and Glenn to form a search party, we will find her, Daryl. We aren’t leaving the farm until we do. Walker barn or not.”
Daryl nods, not saying anything. Gloria moves a little closer to him, wanting to check his wounds to make sure they’re healing properly. Slowly, she moves her hand to his left temple where the bandage is, she notices that he flinches slightly.
“May I?” she asks, her voice soft.
He looks at her hesitantly then nods again. She smiles softly at him, slowly and carefully pulling back the bandage, seeing that it’s healing fairly well. Gloria repatches the bandage on his temple then takes her attention to the wound on his torso. She looks at him, asking permission with her eyes. Daryl shifts awkwardly, lifting up his shirt only enough to reveal the stitched wound. She smiles when she sees that it’s also healing well.
“You’re one hell of a man, Daryl.” Gloria comments, causing him to blush again.
“Ya should head back.” Daryl says, making his way back to his tent.
He enters his tent without saying anything else to her. Gloria chuckles at his behavior then slowly makes her way back to the rest of the group’s tents. When she gets there, she spots Maggie walking by herself. Thinking back to her conversation with Glenn, she decides to go and speak with her.
“Hey Maggie!” she calls out, hobbling her way towards the young woman, “can we talk?”
Maggie stopped in her tracks when she heard her name being called, “Sure...”
“I understand why you’re so pissed at Glenn,” Gloria starts when she’s in front of her, “you have a reason to be, but I hope you can understand that Glenn had his own reasons for what he did too. I know he broke a promise to you when he told the others about the barn, but he couldn’t risk their safety and keep it to himself. The first people those walkers will target if they ever got out would be my group sleeping out in their tents, not your family in the house protected by walls. And I don’t think any promise is worth the lives of my people.”
As Maggie stays quiet, Gloria starts to worry that she offended her, “Look, I’m sorry if I’m being too blunt and I upset you more, but whatever you and your family thinks about these walkers still being people waiting on a cure, I can guarantee you that they cannot be saved.”
“I know that!” Maggie snaps, “I’ve seen them first hand and I know how dangerous they can be! When I went on that run to the pharmacy with Glenn, one almost bit me and that’s when I realized it. That’s when I knew daddy was wrong about them.”
Gloria frowns, now confused, “Wait so... if you know how dangerous they are, why are you still so upset at Glenn for telling everyone?”
“I was mad at Glenn for breaking our promise, but that was the last thing on my mind. I care about Glenn, I think I might even love him.” Maggie blushes as she speaks, she sighs, “and because I care about him, I keep thinking back to when your group first got here, there was a walker in one of our wells and they lowered Glenn in to get the walker out.”
Gloria blinks in confusion at the story as it’s her first time hearing this, assuming that this was before Daryl had found her, “They... did what?” her voice coated with a protective rage.
“They used him as walker bait.” Maggie tells her simply, “and for some reason, Glenn was happy to do it for them! And when I... when I realized how dangerous they were, I just got so upset that Glenn was willing to throw away his life to protect people who don’t care about his safety.”
Gloria sighs at this, “I know... that’s just how selfless Glenn is. Always putting others before himself, which is why we gotta protect him.” she smiles pointedly at Maggie.
Maggie smiles back at her words, “I meant it, when I said I care about Glenn.”
“I know, I can tell. And I know Glenn cares about you too. A lot. Which is why he had to tell everyone else.” she sees Maggie’s confused expression and continues, “he knew that Hershel wasn’t going to do anything about the barn, but Rick and Shane will. He had to make sure it was dealt with as soon as possible to protect everyone here, and that includes you and your family.”
“You’ve given me a lot to think about.” Maggie says, gently grabbing Gloria’s arm and squeezes softly, “thank you.”
“Anytime," she nods, “oh and if you can, please make up with Glenn? I’m never gonna hear the end of it until you do.”
This causes Maggie to laugh, “I’ll think about it.” then resumes walking on her path.
Gloria chuckles and sighs, thinking that the talk went very well. She makes her way back to the tents and plops herself on the stump by Glenn’s tent. Taking a deep breath, she sighs in relief, today was a very productive day.

Mother Russia's Ice Tiger
Chapter Two: Warm Kitty
Otabek’s Point Of View:
I frowned slightly as I looked around the banquet hall, there was a lot of people. It made me worry about Yura, he wasn’t very good with crowds when he wasn’t on ice. Everyone always treated like a weak, vulnerable child, not the ferocious tiger he really was… Though, I was the only person to see the true person under his mask, the adorable, little kitten who loved a good cuddle and fluffy blankets. It was fun being with Yuri, he always dropped his guard around me and just let himself be... Well himself. He would pout and sulk if something didn’t go his way, but that’s what made him so precious to me, because the things he pouted and sulked about were always about me, my clothes, my bear, my bike, even my cuddles, he’d complain if my arms weren’t wrapped tight enough around him and that he wasn’t close enough to me, even if he was in my lap.
My Yura, my kitten. I was lucky, so lucky to see him again. After our first encounter in the ballet school... I wanted to see more of him, I wanted just him. He put me in a trance with his beautiful dancing and those lively green eyes of his... The unforgettable eyes of a soldier, that’s what really drew me in. He captured my heart from a young age and I can honestly say, I’ve never been happier. I couldn’t imagine anyone else having my heart but Yura. He was the one thing that pushed me to try my best at skating, to exceed all the limits and push further. He’s what inspired me to continue skating, to try and win no matter what. And after our fateful encounter in Barcelona, he still hadn’t changed, only got a little taller, a hundred times sassier and had a foul-mouth. Now I’m not one for cursing but whenever Yura shouted a cuss word, it sends a shot of heat throughout my body. As if I couldn’t get enough of his voice, the thought of the dirty words leaving his angelic lips with that musical innocent tone that was his voice made me shiver with delight. He was downright sinful, from his gorgeous blonde hair that usually covered half of his face, the fierce attitude he had when arguing with someone(usually about why cats are superior), the sweet tone of his voice when he’s tired and just wants to be held close and tight, the beautiful green of his eyes that can cause you to get lost in without care, the soft, pink lips that he chews on when he’s anxious or thinking. My mind slowly starts wondering to his body, the height of the delicate tiger that fits perfectly under my chin, the small soft flesh that covers him, perfect size for my arms when we cuddle, the long shapely legs that slowly lead up to- DAMNIT I can’t keep doing this, I can’t keep thinking about him in that way when theres people around, it’ll cause me more problems than what I have to deal with already.
Sighing, I look around and try to spot my Yura, desperate to see him to calm my own nerves. Nodding unconsciously at what my coach says to the new sponsors, I spot him sulking next to Viktor, pout on his lips, arms crossed angrily, but his eyes searching frantically, scared and desperate for something. Soon they land on me and relief fills them, but the fear still doesn’t leave them, I knew this was a bad idea for him.
“And Otabek is just ready to take gold next season, he’s got so many new ideas and dances ready to go. You just can’t stop him once he starts-” my coach babbled on, gesturing at me. The sponsors nodded and turned their attention to me, eyes expectant for me to play along and tell them something they want to hear. Clearing my throat, I put the champagne glass down and smile bleakly at them,
“I apologise to cut this meeting short but I’m afraid I need to go and talk to one of the competitors, I promised we’d discuss the new season and possibly doing a piece together, if not just choreographing something for them.” I say dryly, my voice monotone and devoid from any sort of implication on whom I wanted to speak to.
“That’s Otabek, always ready to go back to training, striving to do his best and win that gold.” my coach says and slaps my shoulder with a forced laugh, I just gave them a half smirk and nodded towards them,
“If you’ll excuse me.” I say and turn around, walking away from them and towards my Yura. He watches me come closer and sighs audibly in relief, moving forwards to meet me halfway but gets stopped by Lila who whispers something to him and pulls him to a elderly couple. I could hear them from my position, they were cooing at him and started pinching his cheeks, talking about how adorable he was and how he was such a well trained little girl. I could see that he was getting angrier and angrier by the second, so could Lila, Yakov, Viktor and everyone else but the couple in front of him. He was ready to blow, I could see it and I knew that was my cue to step in.
“Excuse me sir, ma’am but I’m afraid I’m going to need to steal Yuri away from you two. I had promised to speak to him about the upcoming season and the new choreography, we thought we might do a duet perhaps or I sort his next piece for him.” I cut in, their ramblings cut short with my blunt tone. My hand gently wrapped itself around Yura’s wrist and slowly tugged him closer to me.
“Oh yes of course! Wow, you skaters sure mean business for next year, I can’t wait to see!” The lady said which turned my thoughts dark and menacing,
‘Oh yes, I’m sure. It will surely be a season to remember.’ I chuckled lowly, my lips turning up at the corners,
“If you’ll excuse us. Ms Lila, Mr Yakov we may be a while so I’ll make sure Yura gets back safely and on time.” I say, turning my gaze on her and Yakov to let them know that I was taking him away from the banquet. Yakov just nodded at me and shot a look at Lila when she opened her mouth to argue, which made her look over at Yura and shut it closed at the look on his face.
“Very well, training won’t be until tomorrow afternoon at 1 pm sharp, don’t be late little ballerina, am I understood?” she asks, causing Yura to nod at her. Nodding my head one last time, I turned and started pulling Yura out of the banquet room and out of the venue. Pulling him towards my bike, I turned around and pulled him into my arms, wrapping them around him tightly, tucking him close to my body. He slowly deflated into me, fingers gripping onto my jacket tightly as his breathing quickened then slowed.
“You ready to go, Yura? We can go get some ice cream before we go back to the hotel to make our fort.” He just nodded against me and slumped against me, suddenly drained of energy.
“It’s okay kitten, I got you.”

Honestly i think a lot about how the two things that stand out to me about silver as a character are:
1) what he believes becomes his reality
2) everything is always someone else's fault because otherwise the guilt and hatred would consume him
And given those, i think the main reason he doesn't do this is his absolute need and drive to stay alive and that his past, and the way he has internalized it, is so horrifying that it feels insurmountable. Its not even the trauma at that point. Its shame and guilt and fear and all the emotions that make a task so much more difficult to deal with than it actually is. And all the things that grow if left to fester - the only emotions that can grow in untended soil.
And so I don’t buy that it was something that happened to him that made him the way he is. Or, not to say that nothing bad has happened to him because obviously these reactions come from somewhere. but that the way he reacted or the things those traumas made him do, made him feel so alienated in himself and so full of shame/terror/disbelief that he rejected it even happening.
Like, when I was a kid, my childhood and the people I grew up around made me believe anger was the only real emotion - the power move you could pull out to drive anything how you wanted it driven. That if you were angry enough about something, it absolved you of any guilt you had of your part in it. That you could use anger and sadness to rewrite reality to make other people believe your version was the truth.
That made me do things that ended often with bad decisions, deaths, and a lot of things it has taken me years to even admit were my fault - let alone dealing with the feelings associated with that guilt.
But for years I thought not talking about it, ignoring it, leaving it unspoken, denying it, saying there was nothing I could have done differently and so my actions had no relevancy to the actual events, made it so those things never happened. Or, that they did but I didnt need to include them in my story. Because they werent a part of my story.
But here's the thing about doing that: it isnt possible. You can say the past has no meaning and that its irrelevant to who you are but what you're saying in reality is that you've locked that terrifying thing in a box so tightly sealed for so long that you can no longer even remember what looks like. Cant even really hear the screams from inside. But here's the secret: without those memories and experiences the inside of you is hollow and eventually all that fills it are the monsters' echoes. You don’t recognize them because they're so distorted - so unrecognizable as the cries you know the monster to possess. And so you might believe the actions they call up in you are completely separate from it.
But just believing in something hard enough doesn't make it true. The truth is buried in that box and yeah, the only way it feels like you can keep yourself safe is by keeping it buried, denying its existence. And that might work for a bit. But sooner or later those distortions are going to become all you hear, as the monster, ignored for so long, only gets stronger. Angrier. More powerful as the things it drives you to do multiply. The only way to appease it is to open the box and talk with it. To bring it into your story so you can write it an ending. But you've left it so long it feels impossible to do on your own and you've pushed away anyone who might have been willing to help you. Made it their fault. Made it someone else's fault. Someone else is the bad guy. They have to be - because you can't be and every story needs a well crafted villain.
Anyway it's that book meme but its black sails season 4 if instead of silver making flints confession all about how he sees it reflecting on flint dooming his loved ones, if he had used that opportunity to talk with someone he knows also did dark things - really terrible dark things, and things that have happened to him that still affect him a decade later - who has now finally opened up to him about the reason. But instead he turns it around. Says how the deaths of miranda and gates and thomas are flints fault because by now that need has grown so strong that it's become necessary even for things silver himself had nothing to do with - make sure they know it wasn't you - and he buries his own trauma deeper, adds another shovel full of dirt, another lock to the box. And the monster again has to grow louder to make itself heard.
(Of course that isn't the only time silver pulls this card - it's his ace in the hole - but it's the one I think really could have made a difference if he had taken a chance.)
(Also it's really super extra sad to me that I think the only time he DOES actually admit to thinking something is his fault is when he thinks Madi is dead. Because Billy warned him, silver knew, even flint knew his reservations about the people close to.flint being in danger, and yet silver still 'chose' to let her go to the exchange with flint. And it ended up costing him so much the box ended up breaking open of it's own accord. He cant blame flint for it - or Billy, or eleanor, or anyone and the guilt has no one he can direct it on but himself. and not just that sadness - but maybe all of them - come tumbling out, uncontrolled and uncontrollable except by lashing out at anyone and anything it could. And then madi ends up being alive and ending the things he could blame it on to make himself think it would never happen again becomes the only option. That if b not a, you fixed it and don’t have to think about it again. That by ending the war he could keep madi safe. That by locking flint away he could keep madi safe. That madi being safe is what he needs - not to work through his guilt or talk or listen to flint when flint says it will pass. If Madi is safe then the monster might go back in the box.)
Idk
“A lot of things start with violence and wailing. A lot of them end that way too.”

Episode 11: Ranma Meets Love Head-On! Enter the Delinquent Juvenile Gymnast!
Tumblr media
Aaaaaaaaand we’re back! It’s a new story arc on the Ranma Rewatch, and we’re more than halfway through Season 1 of Ranma 1/2. I honestly did not remember that the focal character for this arc was introduced now, I thought she wouldn’t be a thing until at least Season 2. To be honest, I’m also not super excited, just because this new character is probably my least favorite main member of the love dodecahedron. But hey, maybe I’ll like her more this time around! Next paragraph, I’ll have watched the episode, and we’ll see what I think.
Tumblr media
So, uh, before I start the recap for this episode, one thing I feel like I have to say first.
CW: Attempted Sexual Assault played for humor
For now, make of that what you will. Anyway, the episode starts off with Ranma having just used his cursed form to score some extra sweets for what money he had, and is heading home. But he runs into three girls from his school facing down another girl from somewhere else. The Furinkan High girls are all injured, but still try to fight, only to be thrashed by the other girl’s ribbon and then sadistically assaulted by her.
Not liking that, Ranma intercedes, easily able to dodge the girl’s attacks, showing this newcomer that he can hold his own. She gives her name and title, Kodachi the Black Rose, throwing Ranma a literal black rose before leaping away and laughing. Ranma takes the hurt girls to Akane, who hears what’s going on.
The girls are all from Furinkan’s gymnastics club, and they were scheduled to enter a Martial Arts Rhythmic Gymnastics tournament. Only problem: Kodachi and her team ambushed and injured them badly enough that they can’t compete. With no other hope, they ask Akane to fight in their place, to which she accepts.
There’s only one major problem there: Martial Arts Rhythmic Gymnastics requires the participants to use Rhythmic Gymnastic items as weapons, and while Akane tries to train with them, it becomes clear that she doesn’t have the skill necessary to use them. Think of Akane as a Fighter with high STR but low DEX. She gets angrier and angrier as she continues to try to find something she can do, only to be met with failure after failure.
Ryoga, as P-Chan, was hanging around watching, but can’t take it anymore. He runs into the bathtub, currently occupied by Mr. Tendo, and jumps into the hot water, changing back in front of him and heading back to the training hall to help Akane. He does everything he can to improve Akane’s skills, for which she’s grateful, but at the end of the session it’s clear Akane’s about as rubbish as she had been at the start.
As Akane goes to bed, Ranma tries talking to Ryoga, annoyed that he’s still trying to worm his way into Akane’s life. Ryoga’s reply is to insinuate that Ranma is getting jealous, something his immediate reaction makes look pretty accurate. But then before they can talk more, Ryoga jumps into the pond to return to being P-Chan, eager to snuggle up with Akane in bed again, something Ranma doesn’t want to let happen.
While Ranma chases the piglet around the house, Akane returns to her room and tries to sleep, only to realize that Kodachi was waiting for her, holding herself up in the ceiling, ready to attack. They start to fight, but just as Kodachi gets the upper hand Ranma enters in his chase of P-Chan, giving Akane the ability to break free of the ribbon. After they dart away again, Kodachi decides it’s enough for the night, and tells Akane they’ll finish the fight in the tournament.
As Kodachi runs along the Tendo families roof, she runs right into Ranma’s kettle of hot water, knocking her off the building. Seeing that, Ranma catches her, and she falls for him instantly. She uses a paralyzing powder to completely freeze Ranma in place, and then tries to kiss him while he can’t resist. The only thing that stops her is Akane investigating the noise on her roof, finding the two, and assuming Kodachi and Ranma were about to do the do over her bedroom. She sends Kodachi packing, but leaves Ranma up on the roof, unaware he had no say in the matter.
That’s the basic idea of the episode. Like I said at the start, this is the first episode to the next arc, so it’s mostly set-up. For the most part, it works to set up the character of Kodachi, and it does that well. She’s clearly eager to win at any cost, and a lot of attention is spent contrasting her aristocratic way of speaking with her underhanded and deadly actions. She is something unique, though there are hints of what will later connect her better to what we’ve had before.
She’s also the first rival Akane gets, and we see already that she’s into Ranma. It’s also shown that, specialties aside, she’s probably around Akane’s skill level in combat. Of course, it’s also shown that she’s way below Ranma’s strength, which is a bit disappointing. I don’t like that they chose to make Akane’s rival weak enough for Ranma to handle easily, instead of giving her a stronger opponent that she would have had to work harder to overcome. But of course, that would have meant giving Akane’s martial arts skills more of a focus.
Speaking of focus, can we talk about why I had a content warning in this? I can see why some people might feel it may be a bit over-the-top to use such a warning, since Kodachi seemed to just be after some lip-to-lip action, but I felt it was a good idea regardless. Kiss or no, Kodachi wanted Ranma utterly helpless so she could do whatever she wanted to him, and it’s hard not to look at it as sexual assault, or at least attempted sexual assault. I’m a little iffy on that as a thing to use to set up the bad guy, and we’ll see if that’s a trend that continues with her.
Tumblr media
I’m not doing a Character Spotlight this week because I feel it’s too early to talk about Kodachi just yet, and I don’t think there are any other characters I’d like to cover more in-depth. Genma Saotome is the only regular so far I haven’t covered with a Spotlight, and that’s because I’ve wanted him to actually be a bit more involved in an episode’s plot, which we haven’t had in a while.
As for my thoughts on this episode as a whole, I’m not totally against it. It does a good job setting up what’s to come next, Kodachi gets a decent introduction as a villain, and there were a few moments I liked. But aside from the uncomfortable rooftop scene, on the whole the episode was mostly just sort of “there”. I don’t mean that in a bad way, I’m actually putting it exactly in the middle of what I’ve covered so far. Room for improvement, which I hope to see next week.
Episode 7: Enter Ryoga, the Eternal ‘Lost Boy’
Episode 9: True Confessions! A Girl's Hair is Her Life!
Episode 2: School is No Place for Horsing Around
Episode 6: Akane's Lost Love... These Things Happen, You Know
Episode 8: School is a Battlefield! Ranma vs. Ryoga
Episode 11: Ranma Meets Love Head-On! Enter the Delinquent Juvenile Gymnast!
Episode 4: Ranma and...Ranma? If It’s Not One Thing, It’s Another
Episode 5: Love Me to the Bone! The Compound Fracture of Akane's Heart
Episode 1: Here’s Ranma
Episode 3: A Sudden Storm of Love
Episode 10: P-P-P-Chan! He's Good For Nothin'
Next time I’ll be covering Episode 12, the midpoint of this arc, titled “A Woman's Love is War! The Martial Arts Rhythmic Gymnastics Challenge!” Once again, I love this kinds of titles. Hope to see you all then!

New Plan!
Characters: Shuichi Saihara, Ouma Kokichi
Words: 9,119
Summary:
Kokichi Ouma, leader of the mysterious group of thieves that go only by DICE, is going through the motions of orchestrating their biggest heist ever when an unexpected bump in the road changes everything. That bump in the road is a detective and his name is Shuichi Saihara.
Essentially the events of That’s the Thing About Airplanes from Kokichi’s POV
Read on AO3
Kokichi Ouma was ready to be bored out of his mind for the next eight hours as he boarded the flight behind his motley crew.  He was trying to keep himself busy by being generally exasperated with them. They were supposed to be posing as different family units or strangers that didn’t know one another, but King was supposed to be Rook’s uncle and they were touching each other’s butts while handing the lady their boarding passes. Bishop and Hearts were practically leaning on each other like they were tired or whatever, but they were supposed to be total strangers. Maybe they could be rewritten as half siblings or a whirlwind romance or something? Ugh whatever.
Kokichi would normally kick their asses about this, but he’d already anticipated their horrid 2 AM acting skills. The lady taking boarding passes was a plant. Jack had wriggled herself in as a flight attendant three days ago. She was currently taking boarding passes because of an understaffing issue. An issue that may or may not have been of natural causes...
Anyway, she’d get on the flight and smuggle the tea on board. The heist plan didn’t really involve the plane at all, so this was kind of unnecessary, but god would he want that half-way to Paris hot tea party. Besides, he wasn’t really one to leave much to chance when it came to scheming. Although that characteristic was more out of habit than any sort of innate perfectionistic tendencies. He was a king of thinking on the fly, but nowadays he rarely ran amok in that court because he just so happened to also be just as much of a genius at premeditated mischief.
It was a good thing Jack had volunteered herself for the plant job. He’d call her the most competent of DICE at 2 AM if she hadn’t drawn a dick on his boarding pass while checking it.
“Wow, it’s almost like you’ve actually seen one, you virgin loser.” He had told her as he tucked the pass into his hoodie pocket.
She smiled at him like he had complimented her handwriting or something inane like that. “Thanks! I’ve been working on my portraits. My boss is a real inspiration in my art you know…”
“I’d love to meet him someday,” Kokichi replied congenially, “He sounds handsome and brilliant and like he should always be listened to.”
She gave a thoughtful humm, “Actually he’s kind of a prick.” She blew a raspberry at him.
He frowned. “Well that’s rude,” he commented with an offended tone, “And out of character.” He shifted to an angrier persona. "Do you want to ruin everything?" Maybe it wasn’t entirely persona, he was a little tired too after all.
“Relax boss,” Jack said, looking at the screen in front of her with all the boarding information, “It says here you’re the last passenger.”
To be honest Kokichi’s concern-o-meter for this heist was in the negatives. He was pretty much bored by how well thought out this plan was, but he felt like he had to make a point and he was rarely ever honest besides.
Kokichi huffed moodily. “Yeah sure, but what if that detective from the smithsonian, like, stole the security camera footage from this airport or something totally plausible like that.”
He was kind of planning this conversation out a couple steps ahead. He did that sometimes, when he was bored. She’d refute him by calling the detective a goody-two-shoes or something and he’d say something about caution and she’d dismiss him and then something would pop up later where he could say ‘I told you so’ and re-establish his authority. The same happened when Ace wanted to prove how buff he was by lifting the mammoth bones from the Smithsonian. They'd had to stash it insecurely and the police got to it before they could come back for it later. That was a big ‘I told you so’ moment and as a result no one questioned him on his plans for the Louvre this time around.
Weirdly enough, his conversation forecast did not come to pass this time around.
Jack frowned, looking at the screen. “Hey, what was that guy’s name again? The guy from the Smithsonian.”
Kokichi frowned. “What, the mammoth?”
“No, like, the detective.”
Kokichi squinted at her. He was an evil mastermind, he could recall the exact angle of every laser scanner in the Louvre, of course he could remember the name of some guy. Shuichi Saihara. The novice detective whose dumb friend had tripped that allarm the night of the Smithsonian heist. They’d only had three minutes to get out with the picture frames and hide the mammoth because of him. The detective had showed up at a couple heists and had gotten in the paper, but honestly the mammoth thing was a bit of a fluke. They really hadn’t had a lot of time to stash it. Overall not a big deal.
Which was why it was weird that happy-go-lucky Jack of all people was bringing him up.
“What about him?”
“He’s, like, on the flight I think.”
She showed him the screen and sure enough, Shuichi Saihara was sitting in economy class by the emergency exits. Well, it didn’t really say that on the screen, but given his seat number Kokichi could triangulate it from the diagram of the plane he had memorized. Not that he had really needed to that, but… wait… what if he did need to...
A light bulb went on in Kokichi’s head. In cartoons lightbulbs were just a little blink that meant a switch had flipped for a single eureka moment, but for Kokichi it was more like the real life current of electricity as all of the steps of a brand new heist plan tripped over each other to course through his mind. He forgot to be bored for a second as his brain was lit up with a new scheme and all the possible scenarios that could accompany it.
He had been missing this.
Something... unexpected.
Something... exciting.
Something... unnecessarily convoluted!
Jack took one look at his carefully not grinning face and groaned with exasperation. “Awww boss you ain’t changing the plan again are ya? You already wrote us like a 100 page novel about the first one…”
“Eh, fuck that plan.” Kokichi said doing some mental calculations, “Get me ten parachutes and see if Clubs has extra sleeping drugs I want you to put them in the passengers’ drinks. The strong stuff. Direct Queen towards the rooftop diagrams I shoved in his carry on. Tell me when it gets to be around 1:34 AM Paris time.”
She looked at him with annoyance at the sudden deluge of tasks. “Oh yeah, sure thing. And what are you going to do?”
He gave her his biggest, bestest, shit-eating-est grin. “Be myself, of course.”
Then he turned and boarded the plane, imagining and relishing in the weirded out look she was definitely giving him.
When he got to the entryway of the plane from the boarding hallway, he came upon Rook gossiping with one of the flight attendants. Kokichi heard something about a wedding and a honeymoon before Rook spotted him and excused themselves to find their seat.
“Good evening, sir.” The flight attendant said, still clearly coming off of the social high of talking about his personal happiness. Kokichi decided to slam him down from it, hard.
“It will now that I’m finally on the same damn plane as my husband.” He gave his best impression of a disgruntled everyman, which meant it was a great impression because his best was always great.
“R-right.” Ah yes, the security of making someone else feel socially awkward. Kokichi would make a great playground bully, that’s for sure. At least he was self aware. And putting his talents to good use! Bullying pseudo-law-enforcement was 100% valid according to all levels of morality.
As he walked down the aisle he noticed the rest of DICE ahead of him chattering like sparrows as they moved to the back of the plane. Originally they had planned to keep a low profile and have a pre-heist tea party before touching down in Paris, but now…
Kokichi spotted him, sure enough right by the emergency exits. He looked dead tired and about to doze off, so Kokichi took a second to make some quick observations he hadn’t gotten the chance to get on the night of the Smithsonian heist. The guy had this very detective-esque trench coat with lots of pockets, which was a shame because it meant that if Kokichi decided to pickpocket him he’d have trouble figuring out where his wallet was. Something that didn’t really fit Kokichi’s imaginings of a stereotypical detective, however was that the guy was around his own age in the mid twenties and didn’t seem like the grizzled gumshoe type at all. In fact he was kind of anti-grizzled. He had a boring pretty boy face like a model or something and instead of the full beard and square jaw Kokichi had half imagined any time the word “detective” came up in his mind’s eye he had eyeliner accentuating the only hair on his face and a very breakable looking face. Ok that was a very play ground bully thing to think. Except young people weren’t really as fun to bully as old people because they actually might be poor or emotionally insecure or something, which always made Kokichi feel a semblance of an emotion akin to guilt. But this guy was flying to Paris in the summer season and had been in America a couple weeks before, so fuck him basically. Didn’t he have a job or something?
Oh shit the guy was looking at him, how long had he been doing that?
Don't panic, analyze then act.
He seemed freaked. Probably because Kokichi had been staring at him for a couple seconds now.
He put on a menacingly friendly grin and slipped into the seat next to the detective. Not the one in front of him, or one of the ones in his completely empty row, or even the aisle seat,  literally the one right next to him. He put his elbow on the armrest the detective had so kindly pulled down for him.
The guy still looked super freaked out, so Kokichi tried to shift his grin to the more congenial side of menacing.
“Hey, aren't you Shuichi Saihara?” He asked, extending his hand. He thought about coming up with a pseudonym but was too busy being delighted by the absolute terror on the detective’s face. “I'm your biiiggest fan.”
The guy shook his hand like it was the lever for his very own personal electric chair. Dramatic much?
It seemed to freak him out so Kokichi decided to run with the ‘biggest fan’ thread, chattering on, “I read aaall about that thing with the hairy elephant and the stupid ugly criminal you've been tracking.”
He would keep talking about the ironic impudence of this imaginary criminal but it really seemed like Saihara was having a dissociative episode while he was talking.
He frowned. That was kind of boring. “Hey are you like deaf or something?” That would be kind of extra boring because then Kokichi would be trying to bully a deaf dude and that would be lame. “Hey. Heyyyy. Earth to Shuichi Saihara.” Maybe he could thread some truth in here. “Geez I didn't expect you to be this boring in person…”
That seemed to get him.
Saihara shook his head like he was getting the dust out and stuttered out an "I-I-I'm sorry, what?"
Well maybe he had the soul of an old man, if not the looks of one, Kokichi thought to himself as he blithered on. “Have you been ignoring me? Not a very nice way to treat your biggest fans." He crossed his arms. "I, like, totally hate when heroes don't live up to your expectations."
Guy still looked half asleep… Maybe a change of scenery was in order…
Kokichi noticed the chatty flight attendant from earlier coming down the aisle. It was time to act on his earlier framework...
He said something like “You can make it up to me,” but honestly even he wasn’t paying attention to what he was saying anymore. That was the only warning he gave before reaching over the detective to break his chair. If he had stopped to think about it, he might have thought it was awkward, but it wasn’t like he had to care about what this guy thought. He was going to leave him on the plane and probably never see him again.
Kokichi held himself back from giggling when the detective toppled over backwards.
“Oh no!” He feigned surprise, “How could this happen?”
"What happens to be the problem here gentlemen?" The flight attendant asked right on cue.
Saihara was looking pretty dubious but also not that talkative so Kokichi thought about the right words to spin this.
Distract. You’re the threat here, Kokichi.
"What's the problem? You're asking me what the problem is?" He shifted his tone to that of a white soccer mom used to getting what she wants. "The problem, good sir, is that this Rusty bucket of bolts you call an airplane just tried to give my husband a concussion! I could sue for this, you know."
The flight attendant broke easy.
"I'm so, so sorry sir." He quibbled. "Here, we'll make it up to you. It's a long flight and we don't have many guests so I can upgrade you both to first class with no additional charge."
Kokichi gave a rather hearty harrumph. Not bad as far as harrumphs go.
"You better. Or my lawyer will be hearing about this."
Hah. If Kokichi tried to talk to a lawyer he’d probably get arrested. Small claims lawyers were like cops but with even less spine and more capitalistic tendencies in his book.
The flight attendant didn’t seem to care about the rot of society, though, and tarried forth to first class. Saihara hadn’t quite caught on yet, so Kokichi grabbed his arm. For some reason he didn’t expect the detective to be so draggable. Detectives just didn’t seem that way. Like they could be dragged, but Saihara seemed too tired and confused to not be dragged. Thrilling! Boring. Okay okay don’t get ahead of the horses here. Horses? Uh.
First class was more Kokichi’s style. He let Saihara shuffle into the window seat so he’d be able to keep a look out for Jack’s signals in the aisle.
"Let me know if there's anything else I can do to help you." The flight attendant said as Kokichi sat down.
Ugh it’s like he actually cared about his job or something. Being in customer service must be insufferable.
Kokichi didn’t actually want to harrass this asshole when there was a perfectly good fake cop right next to him, so he replied with an apologetic smile, “Of course. Ah, I'm so rry for causing so much trouble, it's just the honeymoon you see and everything just has to be perfect, you know?”
"No, it's quite alright, I understand completely." The flight attendant seemed to relax a little, “I went through the same trouble with my husband. Really let me know if I can help you at all.”
Droll. “Thanks sooo much!" he intoned gratefully. He turned to Saihara who still looked like he was in shock. "Wasn't he just the nicest Shuichi?"
Saihara blinked at him. "... If you had enough money to hire a lawyer that could sue an airline so frivolously then you would've already been in first class."
Hey! That sounded like something a detective would say!
"I'm just stingy." Hah. Beat that logic. Nice one Kokichi.
Saihara squinted like he was about to bless Ouma with another brilliant deduction.
"... Did you sit next to me so you could convince that gay flight attendant to put you in first class?"
Wow!!! He was thinking!!! He was totally wrong but at least he was trying.
"I can't believe you figured it out!" Kokichi did his best impression of a widow revealing a dark secret on prime time television. "It's true…Detective Saihara I was lying about being married to you the whole time. I thought you knew..."
"Wha- of course I knew that!" Saihara sputtered.
"Oh! How can you ever forgive me?" The flight attendant was definitely out of range by now so this seemed like a good time for some melodramatic tears. "Waah!"
"H-hey! Stop that." Wow what a bad detective. Is that how you comfort people? Sad.
Kokichi was about to weep even more for the loss of chivalry when the asshole shoved something at him. Was that… a handkerchief? This guy just had a handkerchief? Is that not something that only people in movies do?
Weird.
Kokichi snatched it from him, exclaiming, “"Oh wow! What a gentlemanly thing to do!"
He proceeded to make his most grotesque snot noises imaginable.
“A-are you alright?” The detective stuttered out.
Kokichi pondered a couple iterations of “no, and it’s your fault” before deciding that was boring and saying “Perfectly fine.” He flicked out the handkerchief and held it a bit to make sure Shuichi noticed it was clean before tucking it in his pockets. “Just a liar is all.”
"A-a liar?"
Kokichi frowned at him. "No, where did you hear that?" He made an expression of disgust. “Ick, I hate liars after all.” He put on his manic pixie dream girl sees a light bulb for a first time look. “That's why I'm such a big fan of yours, Shuichi.”
"I-is that so?" Ah, the panic of a person unprepared for social interaction at two am was a sight for sore eyes. “Um.” Or maybe it said nothing of Ouma’s own skill that this guy was an awkward glob. "Y-you seem to know my name, but, uh, what's yours?"
A question! An inquiry! One for which Kokichi had the perfect answer....
"Kaito Momota."
“What.”
Wow! What a flat tone Saihara had! Almost like he didn’t believe him or something absurd like that.
Kokichi waved his hands dismissively. "I know, I know, isn't that the name of your friend who was in the paper? That's why I read it, by the way," he said matter of factly. "Because we have the same name."
Ugh, he was adding too much supporting detail. That’s something bad liars do and he wasn’t a bad liar. He was the best liar. Accept no substitutions. Unless they were really good at lying about being a substitution… then they would probably be the best liar…
Ok whatever ranking of liar he was it was probably good enough to fool-
"... I-is that another lie?"
Ah fuck.
"Neeheehee… ya caught me." Best to bail early on this kind of thing. "If you guess my real name by the end of the flight I'll give you a prize!"
"Like Rumplestiltskin?"
Really? Was his own charade getting that cartoonish already?
“Aww man. You guessed it the first try. That's no fun.” Logically this was boring but he was doing okay as far as airplanes went. "I guess now you'll just have to guess my second, less cool, real name instead."
As great as he was at being evasive in all situations why was the subject not changed by now.
"... Honestly I'd much rather be sleeping through this flight." The detective rubbed his face, and Kokichi noticed the darker shades of his eyelids weren’t all eyeliner. He must have business. Something that was keeping him up at night.
Kokichi determined some short term goals for this conversation. Find out why the detective was going to Paris was primary among them. That information would narrow down his field of options for how to spend the rest of the flight.
Kokichi scoffed. “Why would anyone get on a flight to Paris at 2 AM if they weren't prepared to be up all night?" He shifted back into the fanboy thread, "Oh! Oh! Oh! I bet you've got another case you're hot on the trail of, huh Mr. Detective?”
Saihara seemed to hesitate. “Uh, sort of.”
Kokichi thought he was going to say something more but after a few seconds of silence, it was clear he needed further prompting.
"What kind of answer is that?" His words seemed to surprise the Detective, which was a bit silly considering that they had been having a conversation, where words being exchanged should be the norm. "How can you only sort of be solving a mystery?" Kokichi lied through his teeth. "You know, I just so happen to also be a world class detective."
“Really? Saihara’s skeptical and unassertive response was less of a question in this conversation and more of a way to measure how gullible he was.
"Yes, really!" Kokichi replied, storming ahead, "And as a real life detective I just so happen to know that when you're working a case you work it with 100% of yourself!"
Saihara made this weird, soft sound. It took Kokichi a moment's consideration to realize it was supposed to be a laugh because it sounded not at all like the howling cackles growing up with DICE had familiarized him with.
"I guess you're kind of right about that…” He fidgeted with the edges of his coat. “There's, uh, this case that I've been looking into for a long time now and I guess I have really been putting 100% of myself into it. My friends think I'm going a little crazy…"
Ooh, that was something.
“Your friends? Like that purple haired guy who was in the paper? The one with the dumb name?”
Considering the nitwit Saihara had been romping around the Smithsonian with, the detective must really be off the deep end on this case to be considered looney by his friends.
Kokichi was predicting a silly story that he could use to justify to DICE his choice to sit next to the detective the whole flight beyond satiating this little whim of his for a taste of the unexpected. He imagined them laughing about the detective from the smithsonian who thought the Eiffel tower was a secret spaceship or something as Kokichi explained how he just had to stick around to make fun of him.
Oh shit the detective was saying something.
"-him and one other friend think I'm making this thing about the Louvre up… and maybe I am a little crazy."
… The Louvre, huh?
Kokichi scrutinized the detective. He couldn’t mean… “The Louvre? Like, someone's gonna steal the Mona Lisa?"
"Uh, no." The detective looked away as if mildly embarrassed. "I think, uh, someone's going to take the plumbing from the renovated bathrooms…"
Kokichi’s brain registered two things about Shuichi Saihara at the same time. One: he was a real detective. Not a hopeless buffoon of a gumshoe like the ones you saw in video games about dystopian court systems and gay lawyers. He had made a real life deduction and had done so accurately. He was on a case. The second thing he realised was that Shuichi Saihara was a direct threat to his entire operation.
People usually categorize threats as something to induce fear. Some would describe the fear as “bone chilling.”
When Kokichi registered a threat his toes got cold. Not because he was scared or something dumb like that, but because his blood suddenly had a better place to be.
Kokichi’s brain raced with possibilities, brand new scenarios and personas that he could put on. Like he had been sitting at a boring ass company play only to realize that the curtains were rising to reveal a dramatic opera where he was the star. Ok, Kokichi wasn’t exactly a poet laureate when it came to analogies, but he was excited okay?
Kokichi shuffled the deck of options and picked a card.
"Wow. You must be really smart to have figured that out." Ok, good thought to start with praise. He has a low self esteem. "You know…" Kokichi leaned in. Shuichi leaned away. Good. Make him uncomfortable by getting in his bubble.
Now, just for fun, lie wildly.
"I just so happen to be the leader of a secret organization with about 10,000 members. We rule the world from the shadows. I think we could use a detective like you."
Shuichi obviously didn’t believe him, which was, to his credit, absolutely fair. “That- that has to be a lie. There is no possible way for such an organization to exist.”
Sad detective, falling for the classic hiding in plain sight maneuver. Disguise the truth of DICE in an unbelievable lie and he doesn’t believe any of it.
"And here I was thinking you were particularly clever." And, twist. "Seeing as you've refused to join my organization… it seems I'll have to kill you."
Oh man that really seemed to frazzle the good detective. What, had he never gotten a death threat before? Typical. It would be funny to see his expression if Kokichi were to just stab him right now. Except ew because blood and also ending human life. Yikes. Weird train of thought.
"But I'll let you leave this flight with your life if you can beat me in a game."
That seemed to calm the detective down a bit, like he realized Kokichi was just joking. It’d be funny when Kokichi pulled out the knife later. Ah, ah, ah, no spoilers.
"How about Russian Roulette with a full barrel?"
Shuichi sputtered, "This is a plane, you don't have a gun!"
Kokichi considered the ‘my ruse has been discovered….’ line again before he realized he’d used it like twice now and tossed it aside for: "Oh that's right, left it on my tchotchke shelf, silly me. Well I guess if you just want to beg like a dog and then split your guts open that would be acceptable."
Wow ok a little harsh there. Kokichi’s single brain cell devoted to tact whispered. What? No. No filter. Fuck you brain trying to conform to social conventions, shut the fuck up and stay out of my personality.
"Um, no that would kill me."
"Damn, nothing gets past you… Hmm… Ok, how about…" Kokichi reached into the pocket he usually left his Yu-Gi-Oh deck in. "A shadow game!"
He held up the cards only to realize they were actually just a normal playing deck. Oh yeah, he left his deck at home because he thought Rook might steal his blue eyes while he slept on the plane. Shit. Oh well, playing cards could be fun too.
"It's time to du-du-du-du-du-du-du-duel!"
Shuichi blinked. "A...duel? Shadow Game...?"
"Hmhmhm... Yes, the loser's soul will get sent to the Shadow Realm…" he shuffled them so that Shuichi and him would draw the same cards, "We each pull one card from this deck, and whoever has the largest number wins!"
Shuichi looked rather befuddled but Kokichi kept going full steam ahead.
This wasn’t really a game of chance anyhow. That wasn’t the point. The game had two motives, the first being to gauge Shuichi’s reactions to different scenarios, the second being to build up Kokichi himself as someone intimidating and mysterious. The card game wasn’t extremely telling, but the ensuing bout of rock paper scissors was.
Kokichi was keeping pretty busy predicting what Shuichi was going to pick next in order to make it a tie, but Shuichi didn’t protest at all to the mindless repetitive game it must have been for him. He was either easily impressed by rock paper scissors or just too awkward to tell Kokichi to fuck off.
Apparently the guy sitting in the row in front of them had no qualms about such things. He hit the back of his seat and grumbled “Oh my God shut up already.”
A bunch of weirdly indignant thoughts ran through Kokichi’s head.
Wow! Rude asshole! Mind your own fucking business! Get some damn headphones!
Shuichi looked like being told he was annoyed by a random asshole was his equivalent of seeing a ghost as he muttered out some inane apology.
Not that he cared about how this guy felt, but him suddenly clamming up just wasn’t very fun at all.
Just when he was making headway too…
… Maybe it was time to get rid of the distractions.
"Gosh Shuichi you really were being just too loud. You're like the loudest person I've ever met."
Shuichi looked at him like he was crazy which Kokichi appreciated for a millisecond before raising his voice to say, “Ugh that game was getting boring though, and no one won so it's probably time for something else.” He leaned over the aisle, noticing that Jack was standing in the aisle at the back of the plane chit chatting with Spades as Queen stole pretzel packets from the snack cart.
"Hey,” he called, “When's drink service?"
The three DICE members under his scrutiny froze like they had been caught doing something they shouldn’t be. They were probably gossiping about him again. Great.
Jack got her bearings fairly quickly, pushing the drink cart up the aisle. "Coming right up~" She trilled cheerfully.
As she passed by to start service at the front of the plane, Kokichi noticed a little green vial tucked into Jack’s sleeve. Most likely the sleep drug Kokichi had requested before he got on the plane. Hmm. He wanted to get rid of the distractions, but he wasn’t exactly sure distractions included Shuichi anymore. The flight was still pretty long and Kokichi knew he’d be bored out of his mind forever if he didn’t get through this whole game gambit with the detective.
Another spur of the moment change of plans was in order and it hit Kokichi with yet another wave of excitement.
"Hey, Shuichi!” He exclaimed, “We should have a tea party!"
Shuichi gave him another look. “A tea party? I don't think they ha-”
Kokichi didn’t have the patience not to speedrun Shuichi’s disbelief.
“Well oooobviously you wouldn't know anything about it.” He interrupted. “I'm the leader of a super secret organization after all, so of course I know about the super secret drink menu available on all air planes.
Shuichi frowned. "But they couldn't bring anything to-”
He stopped listening. Something something blah blah blah doubt doubt doubt.
Kokichi shook his head dismissively, getting ready to set up an I told you so moment.
“Just watch.”
When Jack rolled up with the drink cart she made a hand signal that told Kokichi things were going well on DICE’s end of things. "And what would you fine sirs like to drink?" She asked in a register slightly higher than usual. Jack was being smarter than Kokichi about this and had basically contoured all of her distinctive facial traits away, so Kokichi wouldn’t have to worry about Shuichi tracking her down from this interaction.
"A cup of hot green tea."
Pretty much the only reason he was going along with this impulsive plan of his was that the only person who would get any heat for it if things was south was him. He wouldn’t put DICE’s livelihoods in danger for a whim such as this.
"Sure thing!"
Was this even a whim anymore?
"And what about you?"
Of course it was.
"Shuichi here will have the same thing."
If it wasn’t then it would have to be something else.
And if it were something else, then Kokichi wouldn’t know what it was.
He couldn’t afford to be that stupid.
"Of course.” Jack smiled almost a little too fakely. “Anything added in like sugar or cream?"
She was obviously double checking that Kokichi didn’t want this bastard drugged.
"No, we're both taking it plain today."
"Oh, really? Alright then."
She poured the tea.
“"I hear you two are on a honeymoon? That's so lovely. Can I see the rings?”
Kokichi usually appreciated that Jack was quick to catch on to things, but she was bordering on insubordination at this point.
"You know what I hear?” Time to play real housewives of DICE with this gossip again. “That lonely flight attendants should realize they're sad and nosey losers who should keep their noses out of happy people's business."
Aw shit she was going to think he was flustered and covering up something wasn’t she.
"Teehee~ Yes sir! Enjoy the flight." Yeah she totally was on to him
Wait no because to be on to him she would have to be right and she wasn’t so there.
Oh shit wait Shuichi was still here. Looking extremely awkward and unsure if he was also supposed to start bitching at flight attendants like it was common etiquette or something.
"That was all code you know.” He brushed it off. “Super secret organization stuff. You probably wouldn't understand."
"Uh, yeah." He said, "I probably wouldn't."
Wow this guy was funny. Kokichi was moderately glad he wasn’t in a drug induced coma right now. Moderately glad was pretty good for an airplane vis a vis emotional stability.
"Neeheehee…” He let himself laugh a little. “Drink the tea Shuichi, I've got to pull you into a false sense of security before your final trial."
Shuichi frowned. "I feel like by pointing out that you're trying to lull me into a false sense of security you have essentially not done so."
"See, but because you feel that way it means I have succeeded in lulling you."
Shuichi frowned again, but seemed to see no logic in arguing. He decided to take a sip of his tea instead. Kokichi noticed the asshole in the chair in front of him was asleep. So was the guy in the seat across from his, and the woman in front of that guy was dozing too. Everyone else had a drink and would be soon to follow.
Everyone except for…
“So how do you like the tea, Shuichi?” Ouma asked.
Shuichi was drinking that hot leaf juice like a pro who didn’t even feel the burn. He made a contemplative expression.
“It’s pretty good as far as tea goes.” He shrugged. “I’m more of a coffee guy.”
Kokichi felt a little offended on the behalf of DICE’s custom blend as well as all of the classy tea drinkers in the world. He shook his head
"Fff, what are you, a cop or something? Next you’ll be telling me you like donuts more than cupcakes."
Shuichi made a weird face before looking away.
"Holy shit," Kokichi said. This was the perfect time to both change the subject and do a little investigating of his own. " Are you a cop? Like a really funny undercover cop who decided to pretend to be someone with the exact same job?"
"Uh, no, that's not it."
Was it something about the donuts then or- wait no that was stupid it was obviously the cop thing.
Shuichi was looking out the window now. "I, uh, did used to be a force detective."
"Huh," Kokichi remarked, trying to peek around at Shuichi's face, "Were you fired or something? You must've been pretty bad to get fired from some backwater police station."
"No that's not it." He seemed to be leaning into some sort of memory, "I quit actually…"
Ugh, who gave this fucking loser the right to be interesting. It was totally unfair.
Kokichi kept digging, "Man why wouldn't you want to be a cop. Clearly the most respectable public service someone can provide for their country…" but that was totally a lie. Cops suck.
Shuichi frowned. "I, uh, kind of disagree with that." He was pulling at his fingers like he was trying to stretch them like taffy. "I met a lot of people on the force who really did care about making the community better, but I feel like the existence of law enforcement is really a symptom of larger societal problems, and that the structure of power doesn't work to reduce crime or violence but instead works increase it by giving a group of privileged individuals the power to instill generational trauma in communities."
Uh… huh. Kokichi took a moment to process that because he had never thought about “cops = bad” beyond their innate fuddy duddy inclinations to stop him specifically from doing whatever the hell he wanted. What the fuck? Did this guy actually have, like, opinions??? And legitimate reasons for them??? Who gave him the right??? How could Kokichi hear more of them???
Pff wait he was probably some rich kid who took maybe one social justice class in college and became a stooge of the state anyway. Maybe he was, like, a real policeman's embittered assistant or something.
"That's lame." He lied, "cops are the cops, do you want folks to be murdering people left and right all the time??? I bet you've never even met a criminal." Hehe that one was a bit ironic, he'd laugh about it later.
Shuichi furrowed his brow at him, "Well, I have… I was a homicide detective, actually. I've arrested murderers in person many times..."
What???? Is this what talking to all strangers for extended periods of time was like? You found out they actually had lives? And cool careers? That they made their livings in murder?
Nah, Shuichi was probably an exception. You don't meet an anti cop homicide detective everyday after all…
Kokichi decided he was being too endeared so he planned out a new branch of conversation that would hopefully make Shuichi squeamish, or at least unnerved.
He put on his best enthusiasm face. "Tell me about a murder! Tell me, tell me, tell me!"
Shuichi blinked at him, surprised at his sudden shift in mood. "Uh, alright then…" he said.
Shuichi started to go into detail about a case he had solved his first year on the force. Some guy turned up dead in a public pool and everyone else had basically given up on the case. Shuichi was describing how he figured it out through deductions and use of specific forensic techniques, and to be honest he wasn't exactly a master of suspense. Kokichi was able to deduce the murderer from the details Shuichi chose to include. No, none of that was why he was completely mesmerized with Shuichi while he talked.
Hearing about the things that Shuichi did to get to the evidence in the first place was… impressive???
No that couldn’t be right.
Maybe it was just weird to see a mousey guy like him get as jazzed up as Kokichi about solving murders, and not even in a weird or vaguely creepy way. He just seemed like… Kokichi hadn't thought about it in a long time but when he was a kid he read a shit ton of mystery manga, where the heroes were detectives. He had since then moved on to more sophisticated literature such as airplane diagrams and police radio transcripts, but Shuichi reminded him of those detectives instead of the old fuddy duddies with which he had begun to associate the profession. He was just kind of… cool. Yeah that was the word for it. Cool. Like he was always going to get around to the right answer no matter what. Yeah, he had that abstract "coolness" factor that had drawn Kokichi to protagonists as a kid.
Kokichi wanted to steal it from him. Break his composure, become the center of the stage in this narrative. Yet, at the same time he suddenly dreaded his own inevitable heel turn. This was something rare, he decided, getting to talk one on one with Shuichi like this. It would probably never happen again.
So Kokichi listened. He teased, interjected, and prompted superfluous explanations, but he listened.
And Shuichi talked. He talked about murder most foul, crooked cops, elusive evidence, and the friends he made along the way. Shit straight out of a manga that Kokichi was spending his Saturday morning hyper-fixating on.
The conversation only ended when Shuichi had to get up to use the toilet. A stark reminder that manga wasn’t real and in meatspace human beings had to shit every now and then. Kokichi watched him go and felt a little sad. Like he knew whatever it was worth, the moment had passed. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity and now all he had was to dissect it over and over again in his head until it became mangled beyond recognition...
Yeah yeah ok, world's tiniest violin, scattered ashes, ceremonial boat burning, yadda yadda.
Kokichi had a heist to pull off, no time for any of this silly stuff. He dismissed whatever weird feelings were bubbling in his chest and decided to go with the more practical inspiration that struck him. He took a couple seconds to plan out his grand exit. He decided to leave Shuichi a note and justified to himself that heists had been getting boring lately and as a proper game master he should give Shuichi a hint. Hmm were his initials too much? It might seem like…
Well he didn't really know what it seemed like, which was weird because he was a genius. Was he actually trying to figure out how Shuichi would react to this? He hadn't really thought about what Shuichi's opinion of him had been because he had only started thinking of Shuichi as an actual person halfway through the flight. That was the thing about being in a close knit organization, he always thought about DICE as an extension of himself and everyone else as some sort of nebulous other he had to predict the movements of. Sometimes he forgot that if you spent a lot of time talking to some stranger you find out they have brains and lives and stuff.
Speaking of things that probably have brains and lives and stuff, things seemed to be going good with DICE. Jack had signaled him that she told everyone about the plan when she came by to collect trash.
Of course, he and Shuichi were the only ones she took trash from. Everyone else was fast asleep, all according to plan. Kokichi had written some last minute details on a napkin he had put in the trash bag, so they all knew they were dropping soon.
They were also all probably gossiping about him. He supposed that's what he got for ditching them to sit with a detective dressed in black like a sexy motorcycle. Wow that was terrible where did his brain even get that line and how could he use it to make Shuichi freak out. Probably pretty easily...
Except if everything went according to plan maybe he wouldn't have the chance. Not like this. He imagined himself yelling the comment at Shuichi from the safety of a getaway chopper, like in the movies…
Ok his note was basically done now. Oh hmm. This actually seemed kind of desperate, the note. It kind of screamed "track me down to the end of the world please" like some sort of piss baby cry for help.
Aw shit. He was thinking about what Shuichi thought about him again...
Speak of the devil and he shall appear but Kokichi was already here and hadn't talked about himself in a bit, so Shuichi showed up instead. His hands were wet which meant he washed them and goddammit it was insufferable how tolerable this guy was. Did he have no weaknesses besides being generally awkward and also being someone who used to be a cop? Ugh wait the latter was kind of cool too. Insufferable.
Well you know what they say, if you can't beat em plan to jump off an airplane because you did beat them they just don't know it yet.
Kokichi decided their final trial together deserved some dramatic build up, so he bowed to Shuichi as he got up to let him sit back down.
"Welcome, combatants." He illustriated, "Take your seat and prepare for the final trial."
Shuichi gave him a wary look as he slid back into his seat.
"What is it this time?" he asked.
Kokichi considered pulling out the crying on that one, but got too excited about how Shuichi would react to his pulling out the knife instead. Thusly he reprimanded the detective’s lack of enthusiasm with a single tsk.
“You could stand to be a little more concerned mister detective, it’s your life on the line after all.”
Shuichi gave him a dubious look, like he trusted airport security and general societal norms to keep him from being murdered.
Kokichi wanted to tear down the walls of that trust.
He pulled out the knife.
Shuichi’s reaction was instantaneous. He practically jumped away from Kokichi in his seat. Weirdly enough... that just made Kokichi realize they had been sitting pretty close before...
How did that happen?
Eh no time for that.
“Is that a knife?” Shuichi yelped, “How did you get a knife on the plane?”
It was weird how Shuichi stuttered about everything except things that were actually dangerous. Well maybe Kokichi having a knife wasn’t really dangerous, but Shuichi didn’t know that and here he was saying complete words. Sentences and all. And yet it still had the streak of incredulity running through it that shot through to Kokichi’s head faster than his own signature panta-redbull blend.
“Oh, a villain's got his ways.” He said in a way that he thought was pretty cool and mysterious.
Shuichi still seemed to be panicking a bit and Kokichi was getting a little tired of that so he brushed past it.
“Now this game's pretty easy to understand, but you gotta be skilled,” he explained matter of factly, “I'll go first to show you how it's done.”
When some other kids had showed him this game when he was an even tinier bastard they had started off slow and slowly sped up. But he was still kind of leaning into the shock factor, and going slow was lame. He started stabbing the table through his fingers at a breakneck pace.
“H-hey!” Shuichi exclaimed (oh so now he stutters), “You're gonna hurt yourself doing that!”
“Pff, as if I would.”
The thing about this game is that it required rhythm, and rhythm required predictable repetition, and being predictable was the antithesis to everything that brought him joy in life.
He sped up.
“Here it's really easy.”
He went even faster.
The knife went *thuck thuck thuck* as it massacred the table.
When you did something the same way for a long time it gave you time to think about things. It didn’t really give you anything specific to think about, though, so Kokichi always felt like he was wasting time.
The knife went *thkthkthk* between his fingers.
He wanted to consider next steps. How long he would do this for and what would he do if Shuichi lost the game… Instead he started thinking about when he learned the game. He remembered he had picked it up from some of the older kids at one of the homes. The only other thing he remembered about them was one time they had stood by a rose bush with him, tearing off thorns and pushing them into their fingertips. Kokichi had done it and remembered that it didn’t feel like anything at all.
*Schlick*
Your fingers are full of blood vessels and nerves, but if you push down to the cartilage-
Oh wait.
“Agh!” Shuichi exclaimed from beside him, “You’re bleeding!”
Kokichi was bleeding.
He was looking at his hand. His knife had nicked a millimeter of skin on the inner side of his ring finger, just at the junction between the tip of his finger and the second part of the ligament. It occurred to him that he was in pain.
“Ow,” He said on instinct. Or maybe he thought it in his head. It didn’t matter because he was busy also thinking about how Shuichi had just grabbed his wrist and pulled it over to him.
The detective placed Kokichi’s hand in his lap like a sandwich he was saving for later while he ruffled through his coat pockets. He drew out a bandaid and lifted Kokichi’s hand again. His fingers were longer than Kokichi’s, and they felt sort of cold, like his blood had better places to be than his fingertips. They were very, very gentle as they wrapped a bandage around the bleeding finger. Almost like Shuichi cared or something.
The detective’s greyish green eyes flickered up to him and Kokichi realized Shuichi had really long eyelashes. “You really ought to be more careful.” He said in his soft way.
Kokichi was honestly having more emotions than were necessary about this, so he focused on the annoyance.
Man, good at figuring things out, is interesting, has opinions, and actually cares about other people? Was this guy even a real person??? That seemed like too many character traits. Geez Shuichi, why did mom let you have all of the attractive personality qualities?
Did he say attractive? He meant annoying.
Shuichi squinted at him. His eye lashes weren’t that long, he was wearing eyeliner. Kokichi had already noticed that. He just had to start thinking coherent thoughts again.
“What is it? Are you alright?”
Yeah, for sure.
Shuichi was still holding his hand and Kokichi decided it was time to not be touching another person again, so he quickly whipped it away. He tried to settle into a boastful kind of hands behind the head pose, but worried that the effect was lost by the sudden squirming of emotions in his gut.
"Geez," Kokichi said petulantly, "I can't believe you actually beat me."
He stomped everything down. It was time for action not... not whatever this was.
Shuichi blinked at him in confusion. "Beat you? But I didn't even play…"
"Doesn't matter." Kokichi shifted to a new pose where he leaned his arm on the rest in between them and propped his head up, positioned for his next steps. "The rules were if I cut myself I lose, and I lost."
“...Although, it doesn't matter if you join my organization or not anymore, Shuichi."
Shuichi looked at him in confusion and Kokichi found it kind of frustrating that he didn’t know which aspect of this that Shuichi was contemplating.
“Uh, it doesn’t?”
Very eloquent, Shuichi, that clears things up.
"Nope." Kokichi moved a bit so that both elbows rested on the arm rest and propped his head up closer to Shuichi’s. "Because I've already done something much more important than winning."
As Kokichi leaned in Shuichi leaned back. Shuichi was staring pretty intensely at his eyes which made this the perfect opportunity. Kokichi’s hands went lightly down to Shuichi’s waist, where he put the detective’s seat belt into a dreadknot.
“W-what's that?” The detective stammered, no doubt as alarmed by the proximity as Kokichi had anticipated.
Kokichi hadn’t really anticipated what he would say next though.
He went with, “I've stolen your heart.” He felt a millennia of DICE movie nights spent making fun of romantic comedies crash against his soul and decided to change the genre before he embarrassed himself. “Because I'm a thief you know?”
He was practically breathing in Shuichi’s ear by now, which made this next part a little hard. He unbuckled his seatbelt. Then, in a fluid motion Kokichi’s hands went behind his head as he arched to place them on the aisle armrest. He did a handstand for an instant on the arm rest before landing his feet across the aisle on to some poor bastard’s tray table.
When he came up for air he observed that he had knocked a cup over and that Shuichi had just noticed his own seat belt malfunction. The detective’s look of dawning realization felt like a standing ovation.
"Hmmm, I really should kill you, now that you've seen my face," and maybe he would if DICE were that kind of organization. It was kind of troubling that the police would get sketches, and the gang would probably harrang him about it. But eh, what can you do.
Certainly not murder. You can’t just murder people. That’d be dumb. Boring even.
Kokichi hopped down from the tray table and grabbed his heist bag. It would’ve been bad to forget that, he considered as he pulled out his mask, Louvre cameras are a lot more reliable than a half asleep detective’s recount.
Said detective was certainly fully awake now, looking at Kokichi in an utterly gobsmacked manner. Kokichi felt like he was sinking his teeth into the stem of a rose thrown from the audience.
"... But I think that'd be a waste, don't you?" Maybe the trouble was what he was looking for, after all. He wondered if they would fingerprint the arm rests when the plane touched down. They wouldn’t find any matches in any criminal database, so it didn’t matter much to him. He put on his gloves anyway before tossing Shuichi the note he had written.
No time for second drafts. He thought as he started walking down the aisle.
“Somebody! Stop him!” Shuichi yelled from behind him. It was so manga detective that Kokichi wanted to scream.
The rest of DICE was already getting up with their parachutes on, and a few turned towards Shuichi’s call. Thank goodness they were wearing their masks because he wasn’t sure if Shuichi could still see down the aisle or not. He might’ve seen Jack’s face, but she had been wearing a lot of makeup so it was probably fine.
She certainly didn’t seem concerned. She was checking the knots the only actual flight attendant on the plane was trussed up in.
Ace, always a little over eager, wrenched open the emergency exit as Kokichi was still putting his parachute on. He felt the drastic change of air pressure in those spaces you feel it in your skull and stomach. He hadn’t realized how warm the inside of the plane was until the cold air sucked it out.
He used convenient zippers to close up his hoodie pockets, knife included, and buckled up the rest of the parachute’s straps.
He looked back, just once. Shuichi was peering out at him in the aisle. He looked like his world was ending and Kokichi reveled in the power of that. That he was just that important to this detective.
The curtains are about to drop but there are still people screaming in the balconies.
He smiled.
The encore wasn’t up to him.
“So long, Mr. Detective!" He got to the window. "Better luck next time.”
Kokichi jumped back first out of the plane and the walls and the aisles and the lights of the plane slipped out of view through the emergency exit one by one.
And he fell.
He fell and flipped over to take in the view of Paris below. The city of lights indeed. It was beautiful, he supposed.
He fell, letting himself enjoy the breeze a bit before reaching terminal velocity.
He didn't though.
Enjoy it.
It felt like getting on a fucking awesome roller coaster except it’s also your every day ride to your job at some dead end minimum wage desk.
It was… boring. Routine.
Just victory, just the Louvre, just air.
Even as the other members of DICE whooped and hollered on their descent, Kokichi realized the fun part of the heist was already over. The whole heist was over.
He could predict it all.
He would deploy his parachute, he would float down to the Louvre, and he would orchestrate a perfect heist.
But Kokichi Ouma realized then that he would never stopped falling.

A Familiar World
Letters To Nettles (Part 1) ——————————————
When moving in doesn’t go as planned, who better to talk to than your old mentor? After all, spilling tea is always a good way to start being pen pals.
The masterpost for AFW can be found here. The chapter post for AFW can be found here.
——————————————
Honestly, i’m really glad i found a way to give nettles a more active part in the story. She’s a real fun gal to write! Even if I’m just writing her writing for now sldkjfs
hope y’all enjoy the shenans between these two~
Nettles,         You would not believe the shit that happened to me since I got here. Do you remember how we bought an apartment that had a roommate option? So I wouldn’t be by myself after I got settled? Well, whoever’s working the damn desk apparently got me a roommate way ahead of schedule. I’d just started getting my stuff moved in when this guy and his weird cat showed up. Turns out, he’s my roommate. And nobody told him I’d moved in. Or told me that he’d be showing up. So the place essentially charged me for a single room, promising a roommate later, and then threw a stranger at me and took my fucking money. I can’t even move anywhere else, because I don’t have enough money to do so, and apparently the other apartment buildings are all full up from questors or some shit.         I’d probably be angrier if this guy my new roommate wasn’t so… nice? His name is Aiden. He managed to get me half my apartment charge back. Not enough to move, but it’s something. He keeps trying to be friendly with me though. I appreciate what he did, but I hardly know him! He doesn’t even seem that upset, either! He keeps trying to make jokes or buddy up and shit. Isn’t he mad about the whole thing? Does he not have issues with random strangers in his living space? At this point, I’m just hoping his cat doesn’t shed.         Oh, that’s another weird thing. His cat. I don’t know if it’s actually a cat. I mean, it looks like one, but it’s got bluish purple fur, and it was dripping. As in little drops of some liquid were dripping off its ears and tail. I don’t think creatures that are so fluffy should be dripping like busted faucets. At least its dripping goop doesn’t get all over everything. Or, if it does, I think it can just reabsorb it. But hey, what do I know? Aiden might have some sort of little goopy monster cat for whatever reason. I hope not, but I don’t know.         Anyways, hope things are better back at home the town. People can’t just walk into your woods without you knowing. Hopefully people aren’t being too horrible about the magic my disappearance this whole situation.
Signed, Journal Drapht
P.S. please write back ASAP. I need input on the situation.
                                                    ————
Journal,         First of all, that’s an incredibly eventful first day. I’m sorry to hear the front desk was so messy. I could’ve sworn the place was better run than that. Then again, things get crazy during questor season. That’s why all the other places were sold out. I got news that a new dungeon popped up near that town right after you left. Couldn’t get ahold of you until now, or I would’ve given you a heads up. Whoops.         But hey, this whole situation could’ve been a lot worse. I’m glad your roommate talked some sense into the guy at the front desk. I would’ve come down and done it myself if he hadn’t. And probably taken some extra gold to boot. Nobody gets to pull that kinda bullshit on  people. Especially not in a situation like yours.         From getting your money back and the whole “trying to be positive” thing, Aiden seems like a nice enough fellow. Maybe try giving him a chance instead of wondering why he isn’t angry. He’s likely just as unhappy, but sees there’s no reason to stew. You’re both stuck in it now. Gotta make the most of it. I’d be doing the same thing.         Also, I should’ve said three of you are stuck in it. That cat you mentioned sounds a lot like a familiar. You remember when I told you about those, right? Been awhile. If you forgot, they’re like anthropomorphic animal helpers or friends made of magic and some sort of inanimate object. Your roommate likely used some sort of liquid to make his. That, or the cat’s actually a baby monster. Questors keep those sometimes.         I’d advise you to try and settle in for now. You need to get some solid ground under your feet. Having a place to unwind and clear your head helps a lot. Especially in your case. So, finish moving into your new room. Explore the town a bit. Definitely make sure you know where the marketplace and the healer’s is. I don’t need to tell you how important those are. Once you’ve managed that, then you can see about job searching or magic training.         Don’t worry too much about things at the old town, ok? I’m fine. So are your siblings. You don’t need to worry about them though. Or anyone else, for that matter. I’ve got things handled here. You focus on getting adjusted.
Sincerely, Nettles
P.S. Kidding about the baby monster thing. Don’t go flipping your shit over a familiar in the apartment, please.
                                                   ————
Nettles,         I was seriously considering skipping town before I saw your P.S. Are you happy with yourself?         FYI, I just managed to spot the cat again tonight. I caught a glimpse of them in the hall. I’m pretty sure they’re made of paint. I don’t know of any other liquids that’re that same shade. I might ask Aiden about it later. Big might. I still don’t like the guy. He has the room all the way down the hall. Every time he goes from there to the main room of the apartment, he has to pass my door. I don’t like it.         Roommate aside, your advice helped. I started setting up my room. I feel better with more of my own things sitting around the space, even if it’s not done yet. I’m planning on trying to get a map of the town tomorrow, if I can. If not, I’ll just wander. I won’t go too far, don’t worry.         Thanks again for the advice.
Signed, Journal Drapht
                                                  ————
Journal,         You’re welcome for the advice. I’d ruffle your hair if you were still in front of me. Get some sleep tonight, knucklehead.         Also, there’s a piece of advice forgot about: try giving your roommate a chance. If he really bothers you that much, just keep an eye on him and update me. I’ll kick his ass if he turns out to be a bastard.
Love, Nettles
                                                 ————
Nettles,         Fair enough. I’ll try with all of the above. Thanks again.
Love, Journal Drapht

Please Don’t Be a Mistake. Chapter 1.
Tumblr media
Summary: Dean and Sam get thrown into the french mistake once again. This time they reunite with one of their old friends who died three years back on a hunt sacrificing herself for them. She just so happens to be Dean’s old love. How will he react to seeing her alive in this alternate world after so many years of mourning and not being able to fully move on?
A/N: This series is based in season 10. I’m super excited for this series, and can’t wait for you guys to read it! My goal is to have a chapter out everyday until it’s done! It will be a 14 part series! Let me know what you think!!! Love you all and Enjoy;)
Word Count: 1700+
Pairing: Dean x Reader, Chris Evans x Reader, Previous Jensen x Reader
Chapter 1:
“What the hell?” Dean groaned, looking up at his surroundings. “No, no… This can’t be happening. Not again!” He let out a grunt as he stood up from being forcefully thrown by some magical force.
“Dean?” Sam questioned, coming around the corner having been thrown from another area.
“Sam?”
“Cut!” Someone yelled. A man with greying hair approached the boys. “Jensen! Jared! That was great guys! Absolutely perfect!” he cheered, clapping his hands together while moving what looked like a script under his arm.
Both of the Winchester men moved to stand next to each other in defense mode. They had a sense they knew what was happening, but that didn’t mean their guards were down.
“That was the last take for today with you guys. You should be good to go until tomorrow evening when we shoot the witch hunt scene,” the man said, not paying any mind to the fact that the men in front of him were ready to fight if needed.
“Take?” Dean asked, raising an eyebrow.
Sam elbowed him and nodded his head over to the rest of their surroundings. Dean took in the set around him. There were people with headsets and papers running around as if the world would end if someone didn’t get a latte. He remembered the first time this had all happened. Rolling his eyes, he came to the conclusion their original thoughts were true. They had been thrown into another alternate universe.
“Right. Cause we’re actors. People who act. Famous people. Actors,” Dean rambled, trying to play along, but annoyance was clear in his voice.
“Thanks,” Sam stepped in, grabbing Dean’s elbow to direct him away from the chaos around them. “We’ll see you tomorrow evening I guess. We’ll just go to our trailers, and… read lines... and act. You know? What actors do,” Sam smiled weakly at the man as he hurried away.
“Ok…” the older man drug out, confusion evident on his face. “You two do that.” He turned around shaking his head. “I’ll never understand those freaks,” he mumbled.
Once Sam and Dean were out of earshot from everyone and found a door that led outside, they continued to take in what was going on.
“How the hell did we get thrown back into this world? Again?” Dean shouted the last word, throwing his hands up in anger as they walked around mindlessly. “I mean Raphael is dead, and Balthazar couldn’t have done it! We were on a witch hunt! Nothing with angels!”
“I know. I know. I-I’m not sure either,” Sam agreed, following close behind his stressed out brother. “But maybe the witch that we were hunting was more powerful than we thought. I’m guessing this is her doing.”
“How the hell though? Cas made it sound like only angels can do something that heavy with magic! Time and alternate dimensions and all,” Dean argued, getting angrier with the situation.
“Beats me,” Sam shrugged his shoulders with a sigh.
“Great,” Dean huffed. “This is exactly like last time... We don’t know where the hell we are, and we are out of ‘soul phone range’ from Cas!” He shouted loud enough for the crew around them to turn heads.
“Dean, you’re going to need to reel it in. I know this is stressful, but we need to act normal and just do what we always do.”
“Fine,” Dean sighed, giving in to his brothers rational thinking. “What do we do now?”
“Find our trailers I guess,” Sam shrugged, turning in all directions to find any sign of a trailer with their other names on it. “This place seem different to you than last time?” he said, corking an eyebrow up.
“I don’t know man. I try forgetting the last time we came here.”
“Yeah, I guess you’re right. Plus, it’s been, what? Four years since we were here.”
They continued to look around, but weren’t having any luck. Just a few minutes into aimlessly walking around the set, they were approached by a frantic PA.
“Oh, there you guys are!” A smaller framed guy who look flustered and nervous came up to them with a headset on and clipboard in hand. “You guys need to head over to the makeup trailer to get your makeup cleaned up before you’re done for the day,” he said out of breath like he had been running the whole lot to find the two.
“Take a breather there, Sparky,” Dean said, watching as the little guy tried to catch his breath.
“Can you point us to the makeup trailer?” Sam asked. “We’re kinda all turned around,” he said with a soft smile hoping it wasn’t a weird question for their actors selves.
The guy looked up from the ground from where he was basically having a asthma attack and gave Dean and Sam the weirdest look though. Confused as to why they didn’t know where the trailer was since they had worked there for 10 years.
“Uh, yeah,” he said, turning and taking a deep breath. “Down this way and the fourth trailer on the left.”
“Thank you!” Sam said, pushing Dean to follow him.
“Welcome?” he replied in a confused tone, watching them walk away with the same look the director gave them.
“Ok, we get our makeup taken off-”
“I don’t wear makeup, but apparently here I’m always a painted whore!” Dean interrupted as he pouted.
Sam shot him a bitch face before continuing. “Anyway, we get our makeup, or whatever, taken care of then head back to one of our trailers to do some research.”
“Remember last time though? Nothing supernatural happens over here. Except for the show, everything else is normal,” Dean reasoned.
“Well, I have to hope that there’s something we can find, or else we’re going to be here a lot longer than either of us want to be,” Sam said.
“Yeah, yeah…” Dean gave in. “Let’s just get whatever's on my face off,” he moaned, rubbing his face and seeing a thin layer of foundation come off. “Oh, come on!”
Sam rolled his eyes at his brothers outburst as they approached the trailer.
“Do we knock or just go in?” Dean said, freezing once they were at the steps.
“I don’t know.” Sam shrugged. “I guess-”
In that instant, the door swung open and a younger lady with short jet black hair with one side shaved looked down at the boys. She was wearing grunge like clothe, and had a nose and lip piercing as well as piercing all over her ears.
“There you are boys!” She said giving them a wide smile. She moved to the side and motioned them in. “I thought I was going to have to come and hunt you two down before I headed out for the day.”
They just looked up at her confused and then at each other. When Dean didn’t know what to do, he turned to Sam and Sam just shrugged unsure himself.
“Well? Are you going to come in or sit out there all day? I kinda want to get home and relax after being here for 10 hours if you don’t mind,” the woman remarked in a playful tone, but also serious in her comment.
Sam shoved Dean and he stumbled up the steps, only turning around to mumble at his brothers push.
“Bitch.”
“Jerk.”
The woman chuckled to herself at their antics and shut the door behind them once everyone was in.
“He wants to get another dog though, and I feel like we barely have enough time for the one we have.” Another woman's voice was talking on the other side of the trailer.
Dean froze in his steps upon hearing it. He knew that voice. Oh, that sweet beautiful voice. It had been three years since he heard that voice. It couldn’t be… No. It couldn’t.
Sam ran into Dean’s back who came to a fast stop as they walked to the opposite side of the trailer.
“Dean, what are-”
“Sam, that voice.” He only turned a little. Not enough to see the woman and he kept his head down trying to place the voice. Sam just raised an eyebrow looking at his brother confused at what he was saying.
“I mean don’t get me wrong. I love dogs, but with both of our schedules being as busy as they are, it doesn’t seem fair to any sweet pup. Hell, if I did have more free time, I would adopt a whole freaking shelter!” The woman giggled.
“That laugh.” Sam quietly said what Dean was thinking.
They both slowly turned in their place to see the back of a Y/H/C hair girl sitting in a chair turned at the wall looking at another woman that must have been a hairstylist.
“Well, you told him that right?” the hairstylist asked, adjusting some of the woman's hair in the seat.
“Not yet. He just got the idea last night while we were watching a movie all snuggled up with our little guy we already have. I was too tired to think about it at the time, but we’ll talk about it tonight I’m sure,” her shoulders went up in down in a shrug as she leaned back in the chair.
The hairstylist looked up at the boys that had entered the room just now seeing them. The two woman had been so wrapped up in the conversation that they hadn’t even noticed their presence.
“Hey boys! Look who’s here!” she smiled, looking down at the woman in the chair.
But the two men hadn’t taken their eyes off the Y/H/C haired woman. As soon as they heard that laugh they had a knot in their stomach suspecting who it was.
As if it were in slow motion, the chair swiveled in its spot, and like a movie star, the hair whooshed to the side revealing the most beautiful face Dean had ever had the chance to see. And he hadn’t had that chance at all in past three years.
“Jensen! Jared! Oh my gosh, it’s so good to see you two again!” she smile with that radiant and captivating grin that made most men weak at the knees. One man in particular. Dean.
“Y/N.” Dean breathed out, as all the air in his lungs was sucked out.

Skam France season 3, episode 9 reaction
Okay, I finally did this one! I’m not sure how many people still care since Skam France S3 ended back in March, but I wanted to complete the whole season. Sorry for the delay, anyone still interested! I apologize if I forgot some crucial details in writing this since there was such a large gap between viewing the rest of the season.
Episode 9
Clip 1 - Guru advice for a sad boy
Lucas is lying on the couch after his rough night. Are they still going to make him sleep on the couch after this shit went down? Why is he even there anymore after he told them sobbing that this was his room now a few episodes ago? Or when he stumbled in with his boyfriend to fuck on the sofa and Lisa was like, yeah, make Manon sleep on the couch instead since she’s not getting any? Because I refuse to believe that Lucas chose to camp there voluntarily either when he was a) getting laid or b) in the throes of despair.
Mika checks in on him and tries to comfort him. There’s a nice, humanizing part where he says just because he seems happy all the time doesn’t mean he’s never sad, and just because he sleeps around now doesn’t mean he’s never been in love. Lucas apologizes for saying a dumb thing and Mika says it’s OK to be dumb when you’re sad. But don’t be dumb too long, meaning don’t be sad too long. He gives Lucas a kiss on the forehead. So at least we’re getting some of this affection between them later in the season.
Lucas asks Mika how you move on and Mika is just like … shrug. Like he literally shrugs. I mean, I get that there’s no easy answer, but you could have said that instead of leaving Lucas hanging, dude, give the guy a little relief.
Clip 2 - Lucas’ dad suuuuucks
Lucas is doing laundry and looking up bipolar disorder on his phone when Eliott sends him a picture, kinda similar to the one on IG of his raccoon fursona throwing away crumpled drawings? I think it’s be the same one. It’s like he’s trying to say something to Lucas but doesn’t know what. He sends another pic where the raccoon seems to want to call out to hedgehog but the hedgehog spurns him and doesn’t want to talk. Eliott then sends him a bunch of photos at once and Lucas texts him not to contact him because he's not dealing well right now. Which is kinda different from Isak’s reply to Even the night after? It might be lost in translation, but Isak was more “I don’t know what’s going on” and Lucas is like “I’m not dealing well with this,” so confusion vs. hurt/upset feelings.
More dramatic piano music as Lucas gets another text. not from Eliott, but from his dad, asking if it’s true he has a boyfriend. OK, so Dad is a homophobe? Because he sure took a while to answer his son (compared to Isak’s dad who answered him immediately). Like did he need almost a full week to process that his son was dating a guy, he didn’t text or call in the meantime? Dad says if that’s true that Lucas has a boyfriend, it’s not a good idea to bring him to church. He attributes it to Lucas’ mom not being able to understand, but this seems way more like Lucas’ dad’s problem.
Isak’s dad wasn’t a great guy, but I think he genuinely didn’t have a problem with Isak being gay, or at least not a huge one. He responded to Isak’s coming out right away, said it was nice if Isak had a boyfriend and he would like to meet him, and checked in with Isak about whether he was sad about breaking up with his boyfriend. It’s very possible he wasn’t 100% fine with it, but it seemed like he was awkward at worst rather than actually disapproving. Lucas’ dad feels like he is seriously not OK with it even if he’s trying not to come across that way. He waited almost a week to respond to his son coming out to him and then didn’t say anything nice like “I’m happy for you” on top of that, he just said went into how it wasn’t a good idea to bring his boyfriend to church. Lucas’ mom’s possible reaction felt like an excuse for his own problem. And I don’t think it was even her potential response as a religious person, but maybe the dad thinking that Lucas should keep his gay relationship away from the church as a general rule.
Lucas starts to type out that it was a joke (about having a boyfriend), but deletes the message and doesn’t reply, then seems about to cry again. So like Isak, he can’t bear to say it wasn’t real.
Also, by this point in Isak’s season, Isak had come out to both his parents, and he got his mother’s acceptance text right at his lowest point, when he needed it. So at least that weight was off his back. Lucas hasn’t even told her about having a boyfriend yet, so it’s just pure misery for him with no relief. He’s probably even more anxious about his mom rejecting him because of his dad’s text.
Clip 3 - Charles is THE ACTUAL WORST, NO EXAGGERATION
Manon and Emma are talking about Charles when Lucas gets home. Can we please inform the remake writers that this storyline is not even necessary in adaptations where the William actors don’t leave the show? Remember how much Noorhelm there was in S4? If it’s like this in S3 what will the Manon and Charles drama be in Imane’s season? Or will it be toned down in that season and is only more prominent in this one as a way to incorporate the girl squad more in a boy’s season?
However, Manon says Lucas can stay to hear about what happened with her and Charles, which is seriously a sweet moment since it shows how close they are and how much she trusts him. Additionally, he gets to return the favor (of sorts), because Manon supported him and Eliott and was there for him when he was falling apart, so now Lucas can listen to Manon’s story and support her in her time of need.
Manon tells her story. At first it was great with her and Charles, then he got busy working for his dad and Manon had classes, and she didn’t make many friends. I like that she’s all “not my strong point” to Emma; that’s nice continuity, since Emma was the first friend she made at her new school, and they bonded over not having friends, heh. Manon got summoned to testify against Nico and she was upset about it; Charles noticed but she couldn’t talk about it. Then Charles went back to Paris to see his mom and Nico was invited without warning. They talked, Nico cried a lot, he was depressed and regretted what happened. Charles thought Nico needed therapy, but prison would fuck up his life. Especially because Nico didn’t even rape Manon. Yes, that is what Charles actually said to Manon. The fuck.
Charles said he would support Manon in whatever choice but really, while he didn’t impose anything on her, he also didn’t support her. The day of the trial, she went to court but ended up leaving before it happened. Charles asked how it went and she told him the truth, but that she wasn’t coming home, either. Manon didn’t tell anyone what happened because she was embarrassed about leaving for London with her dream man and coming back after only a few months. She felt so stupid. Manon cries, Emma is supportive, Lucas suggests they all drink. Emma is like YESSSSS. Lucas is not surprised Emma wants to drink.
Manon is like, the last time I drank wasn’t exactly great. I mean ... good point, maybe not the best idea to remind her of Nico right now. Except Emma is like, I won’t make out with you, OK? Lucas is like, neither will I. Heh.
I’ll pay a compliment before I get into my rant: Marilyn Lima did a great job depicting Manon’s breakdown. I really felt for her. And that made me angrier at this narrative choice, honestly.
OK, I’m just like ... exasperated. And disgusted. I am not a Noorhelm fan. I didn’t like this story in Skam about why Noora left London. I think it illustrated why Noorhelm were not compatible as a couple, because the same mistakes were happening in S4 that happened with them in S2; just like when he ditched Noora at school when he heard from Niko and then ignored her texts telling him it was rape for days as she begged with him to talk to her, this incident again showed that William was not capable of supporting Noora to the degree she needed it. Sure, it’s a lovely moment when he holds her as she’s panicking, but what about when he cruelly removes that tenderness and love when he finds out why she’s panicking? It was her sexual assault, not his, and I know it’s more complicated because his brother was the perpetrator, but he still needed to put his own feelings aside and support his girlfriend, the victim. When he can’t do that, repeatedly, then we really need to question whether he is the right person for Noora. Not to mention that this issue was resolved off-screen, with Noora being vaguely like “we talked and I understand him so much better now” as if Noora’s failure to understand William’s feelings is the real problem here. Not to mention any other criticism I could say about Noorhelm. And in some ways I think Marles was worse than Noorhelm; there were times when Charles was more of a domineering asshole than William (the scene where he leaves Manon crying on the ground, for example, is even nastier).
So I say this as someone who doesn’t really care about the pairing … did they have to make Charles so much of an irredeemable asshole here?
Charles probably has some “good” reason for his behavior that we’ll find out later. Too bad I don’t give a fuck what it is. He minimized his girlfriend’s sexual assault because the attacker - his brother - didn’t technically rape Manon, because the brother is just so upset about it and crying and he needs therapy, not prison. Fuck Charles. Nico is probably manipulating him, or maybe Charles is doing this for his mother’s sake so her son doesn’t go to prison, who knows, but whatever the reason, he basically planted the idea in Manon’s head that Nico didn’t need to go to jail. He downplayed her need for justice. He downplayed her trauma. Like … the only acceptable explanation is that Charles was replaced by a pod person or an evil clone in Paris, and in S4 the real Charles fights his way out of the underground secret laboratory where he’s being held hostage and tells Manon the truth. That is the only way I will accept Charles and Manon endgame after this.
I would not have a problem with this development were I confident that Manon and Charles were going to break up for good. Okay, that makes sense as a factor that permanently separates them. I do still think it’s kind of frustrating and pointless, like why the fuck did we spend a whole season on their supposedly great and epic love if Charles was going to commit the same selfish and hurtful mistakes he did in S2? I think it would be fine to do a storyline where Marles/Noorhelm doesn’t work out because Charles just can’t be the guy Manon needs him to be, but like … that should be the story of S2. When they’re the focus of a season. When you can develop that idea clearly because the POV allows it. You could get them together earlier in the season and do an arc similar to Eva’s where the Noora realizes that while she loves William, it’s best if they break up because they don’t work as a couple (even if this might be a redundant storyline after S1, I think it could still have value in trying to portray girls not putting up with their boyfriends’ bad behavior). But not “we spent a full season trying to convince you they belong together, but something happens off screen and they broke up.” That’s narratively unsatisfying. And anyway, this whole rant is probably pointless, because my issue is that I don’t think they’re going to break them up for good. Charles will come swooping back later in S4 just like William did. He’ll likely have some weak excuse that we’re supposed to accept as justified for putting Manon through all of this pain. For fuck’s sake, even if, IDK, Nico was threatening Manon if she testified against him, or something dire like that, so Charles had to find a way to discourage her - in what world is it not better to tell Manon about this than to keep it to himself?
You know what? Even if you have sympathy for Charles, even if you think it’s understandable that he doesn’t want his brother to go to prison, however loathsome said brother might be - that still doesn’t mean he’s right for Manon. Maybe they love each other, maybe it’s not fair, but if he cannot support Manon entirely over his brother here, then this relationship will never ever be healthy. She is a victim of sexual assault; Nico is the one who assaulted her. There is no grey area to this situation. So if Charles cannot accept that, then he and Manon cannot and should not be in a romantic relationship; Manon deserves someone who can support her through her recovery of a harrowing experience wholeheartedly. I do understand if Charles has complicated feelings about the issue, but frankly then he needs to go to therapy and work them out with someone who is not the victim of a traumatic crime.
I mean, shit happens, sometimes you have to account for sudden unplanned factors, like when Thomas Hayes left the show. But Michel Biel didn’t as far as I know, so there was no reason to insert this frankly evil drama into the narrative. There was no reason to send Manon to London at all? She was going to move in with Charles. That was literally what was planned for them after S2 to free up a room for Lucas. It’s just so goddamn dumb.
I’m trying to consider if maybe the purpose of this crap was to make a parallel to Lucas’ situation, maybe to show Lucas how Eliott must feel to be abandoned by the one he loves by showing Manon breaking down? But nah. If that was the case, it’s really not highlighted enough, I don’t think we see Lucas clearly link it to Eliott. I know subtlety isn’t this show’s strong suit, but this would have been so subtle as to not be present at all (which is why I don’t think it was intended). And it’s also way too big as drama not to have drastic consequences in itself.
God. I just. Why. Whyyyyyyy.
Clip 4 - Pity party turns to pity rave
They’re all hanging out and drinking, nice to see all three season leads so far get a scene together. Manon’s lying in Lucas’ lap, that’s cute. They’re bemoaning their love lives and it’s Emma’s turn to vent about her relationship with Alex. Manon suggests talking to him to find out if he has good qualities other than sex. See, I would buy this if all we knew about them was that they were hooking up, but we’ve seen through social media that they do hang out together outside of the bedroom? They go places together enough to document their experiences on IG. So they would’ve attempted conversations already, they would’ve tried to bond. I think it’s time for Emma to call it like it is: a satisfying sexual relationship, nothing more.
Lucas is like, you’re lucky, you have a boyfriend unlike Manon and I. Dude, Lucas, come on. Emma is just FWBing it with Alex anyway, according to her. He’s drinking and getting sloppy and telling them about Eliott’s freak-out and him being bipolar and Emma is like, I have it worse. Lmao shut up, no you don’t. I get it in the sense that having a bipolar boyfriend is not a terrible thing, but Eliott’s manic episode is certainly a more drastic and serious thing than just being with some conversational dud who knows how to maneuver his penis. Even Lucas is like BUT MY BOYFRIEND IS BIPOLAR, though in his case I think it’s still the ableism peeking out.
Manon is like, excuse me, I have it the worst. They agree. I also agree. Charles is undoubtedly the worst.
Mika and Lisa come home and join in the debauchery. They put on a disco light and everyone dances. It’s very tonally jarring and I think it’s supposed to be kinda not actually happening? Or rather, some version of this is happening but Lucas’ POV is exaggerating or distorting it because he’s drunk. The lyrics are like “Take control” so I suppose this is his desperate way of reclaiming his messy emotional state
I do like the shot of Mika showing off his nipples and Lucas seeing it and being like … nope.
Manon and Emma make out and Lisa and Mika make out and I’m kinda cranky about it, because I don’t need more straight girl hawt drunk make-outs or a gay guy kissing his female roommate, like what a double dose of bullshit. More generously, I can attribute this to Lucas hallucinating and being out of sorts while he’s drunk and so imagining “wrong things” like everyone around him standing still, Manon and Emma kissing when they’re not a couple, Mika and Lisa kissing when Mika is gay, etc.
It’s all fun and games and party electronic dance makeouts until Lucas slows down and gets miserable. Things get blurry. He can’t drink his angst away, not for long.
There’s a shot spliced in of Eliott making eye contact with him on the dance floor in episode 3, as Lucas is coming down from his high. Nice inclusion as Lucas is trying to escape his problems but of course he can’t get over Eliott or his sadness that easily.
There’s possibly more you could analyze about the composition of the ending but the editing kinda gave me a headache so I only watched the clip once, sorry.
Clip 5 - Basile isn’t a dumbass for once
Lucas is very hungover at school on Monday. Yann is like oooo, night out with Eliott? Lucas explains that it’s because of Eliott that he got drunk. He says Eliott is bipolar as Arthur and Basile sit down. Arthur is like, Kanye West is bipolar. Maybe not the best example to use in 2019, bro.
Honestly they’ve ruined Basile SO FUCKING MUCH with his horrible creepy sexism that I can’t even enjoy this moment from him where he talks about his mom. I mean, this is easily the best Basile has been all season, and if they hadn’t made him so disgusting, it’d be a great scene for him. And I completely understand people liking him in this moment. Hell, divorced from anything else in this season, I like him in this moment! But I cannot get over how atrocious their depiction of him has been elsewhere in the story, like I’m glad he dropped some wisdom on Lucas but this isn’t some magical fix-it that will erase my negative feelings about him.
Like for example, Basile says the first time his mom saw a Tom Cruise movie, she fell madly in love with him and flew to LA and went to his house and got removed by the cops. And not to be insensitive since this is an example of her mania, but my first thought was, “Oh, stalking runs in the family.”
The rest of the dialogue is pretty similar to OG where Basile inquires about how Eliott is doing and he suggests Lucas talk to Eliott, Lucas is a dumbass for listening to Eliott’s ex, etc. Basile says it seems like Eliott really wanted to be with Lucas, and that there are times when it will suck, but if Lucas wants to be with Eliott, he’s got to do it, you have to take people as they are. I dislike the music intruding over the end - I don’t think it’s well-timed and it feels forced - but other than that, the message is fine.
Clip 6 - Bye bye foyer
I like how Lucas and Yann are kinda cuddled into each other as they share earbuds and the couch. Lucas is still wearing his ROMANCE sweatshirt despite being deep in heartbreak. I admire his commitment to love.
There’s a little meta joke because they’re watching a show on Yann’s phone, and he says it’s episode 9, and it’s almost over. Which is of course a reference to it being episode 9 of Skam France with the season almost over, heh.
Lucas gets a text from his mom about going to confession and how God forgives those who deviate from the path as long as they come back to it. This leads into the coming out from his mom, and THAT GODDAMN TINKLY PIANO MUSIC starts up again. I do think it’s been used appropriately at times, but at other moments it feel so soap opera-ish and overly dramatic. Sometimes it seems like Skam France is a really insecure show, like how they have characters state the obvious like they were afraid the audience wouldn’t get it, or they go for the OTT music as if the writing, acting, and directing won’t be enough to elicit an emotional reaction.
I mean I realize it is Bad and Wrong to compare Skams but remember in the original version of this scene where Isak just sat and typed out this entire, very long message, and it was silent except for the cafe noises and the camera stayed still on him the whole time, because Julie trusted the audience not to fidget and for Tarjei’s acting and the importance of the scene to hold everyone’s attention? And in Skam France we get the music and the camera will not stop moving like they assume the audience is made of easily bored toddlers who need stuff swirling in front of their eyes at all times. Speaking of, WHY ALL THE FUCKING PANS, why does the camera need to move so much, whyyyyyyyy. It’s distracting and doesn’t even fit for the emotional tone of the scene, really? Like isn’t he actually pretty steady writing this to his mom? Shouldn’t the cinematography reflect that?
Lucas starts to type a text about how he met someone and don’t get mad at him, but he deletes it and just types out a message saying he’s gay, sorry if it hurts or disappoints you, see you on Friday, love you. And Lucas’ mom texts him back immediately to tell him she loves him, too, and that she’s proud of him.
Heavy sigh. I feel bad being negative about this scene because it is important and beautiful for Lucas to hear, he’s profoundly touched by his mother’s acceptance, but boy oh boy did they minimize the impact of this scene, even aside from my gripes with the cinematography and music.
So the Religion clip was the catalyst for Isak coming out to his mom, and he specifically uses Sana’s words to come out to her. None of the S3 remakes seem to understand that clip’s importance to the Isak character except that hey, talking about religion and homosexuality is good! It aggravates me because it makes it seem like the writers missed a basic connection within the story; they think stuff just happens in the season Just Because and don’t get the cause and effect (like the generalization dialogue earlier in the season, something both France and Italia included without really seeming to get why it was there other than “the message is important”). And I mean, you can adapt the religion scene so it’s not the same! You can adapt the message, it doesn’t have to be verbatim. But not connecting the religion clip to Lucas coming out to his mom makes that relationship between Lucas and Imane less meaningful. It makes the scene more of a tangent rather than an important stepping stone in Lucas’ coming out narrative. It’s just there.
Again, I hate being sour about this but it just makes me grumpy, like I feel this is a demonstration of the differences between Skam and Skam France. Skam did this simple, quiet coming out scene where we just lingered on the actor for a while and which was built up to within the narrative by a prior scene that linked the two thematically, and which delivered the “punchline” with some excellent pacing (where Isak’s mom didn’t reply until when we least expected it, and with powerful timing and execution, when Isak most needed to hear it), and Skam France flies by this pivotal scene and does it in under two minutes like it’s getting it out of the way, with nothing remarkable about pacing and timing, but with dramatic music and camera movement.
Part of my problem is that honestly, I feel like Skam France kind of ... doesn’t care about this moment. Consider the amount of time given to Lucas’ coming out to his mom and her acceptance, versus the amount of time for the foyer stuff that takes up the rest of the clip. I feel like other than Yann’s random initial rejection, all of Lucas’ coming out stuff has been so smoothed over and easy, not just from an outsiders’ perspective, but from a personal psychological perspective. And it’s not that I expect CONSTANT TORMENT but it feels massively oversimplified, like these scenes are just obligatory. I hate to say this because I know the screenwriter is gay and I don’t want to diminish any personal anecdotes on coming out he brought to the story, whether this reflects his own experience. But I almost feel like they knew the Evak fans would flock to this season (which is true, we know with all the behind the scenes stuff and cast interviews they were doing that were blatantly to appeal to shippers) and so they allocated some screen time to getting in the shippy romantic content while pushing aside some of the pesky, less exciting stuff that doesn’t have to do with romance. Like for instance, coming out to one’s mom.
I do like that when Lucas is crying, Yann asks him if he’s OK and Lucas is just kinda like, yeah, I’m fine, and Yann smiles at him. It’s a simple, nice moment.
But here I go again. Just the fact that this incredibly pivotal and meaningful scene is cut off so we can get to the fucking common room drama?? The common room is more important that Lucas coming out to his mom?? They could have at least made the coming out moment a separate clip from the foyer stuff with the principal. It’s not like they haven’t been doing that all season, splitting up big scenes into two or more clips. (And yeah, Isak’s coming out to his mom didn’t have its own clip, but the content surrounding it was at least extremely important and concerned Isak on a very personal level, compared to the foyer stuff.)
The principal storms in and yells because the students have been snatching the Wifi. Daphne takes the blame and gets in trouble for it. Then the principal hears giggling from another room and there is the nerd dude who set up the Wifi and Chloé’s friend Maria, getting cozy on the mattress. They get up and run off when the principal yells at them. Okay, who the FUCK thought it was a good idea to put a mattress in a room behind a closed door, in a school full of hormonal teenagers??? Did you not think this is where it would lead? Idiots.
The principal is roaring mad and yells at Daphne more. What’s next, a Fight Club (lmao, I wouldn’t be surprised) or a heroin den? He singles out the mural as peak bullshit and tells the students to pack up their things. The foyer is closed. And they have to come in on Saturday to repaint the mural.
Lucas is like, no, that’s where I lost my virginity! It’s a monument to my first experience with gay sex! No, actually he just defends it as an homage to Jackson Pollock. Yann defends it more calmly, but the principal gives them both detention. Well, that’s not fair, Yann didn’t deserve that.
Imane stands in front of the principal and gives a speech about how they all participated in the mural and how it means something to them and represents their differences, difference races and sexual orientations. It shows how they can all live together. And now he wants to paint over the mural in white, of all colors? It’s a good speech not because she means it, because L M F A O they did not all paint that fucking mural, Lucas and Eliott splashed some paint on the wall before fucking against it, but because it appeals to the principal’s sense of self-preservation. Does he really want to erase the mural that represents his marginalized students and the harmony and diversity of the school? Does he really want to risk the backlash?
The principal backs down from the mural and leaves. Wait a minute. Imane didn’t actually mean that speech did she? Because lmao, this mural did not mean anything about diversity. There’s an ass print on the wall, for fuck’s sake.
I think she was definitely manipulating the principal and going over-the-top, but the issue is that the rest of the season then tries to play her words as sincere, like that’s the whole point of them standing up for the foyer in the finale, that it’s a place that brings different people together.
Anyway, they’re all sad. The foyer is closing! Daphne says there will be a solution, the others comfort and reassure her.
Maybe because I’m in a bad mood from the coming out part of the scene but: I do not care about the foyer. Actually, I care about it a tiny bit in that Daphne would be sad if it closed and Daphne is my girl but other than that? Nah.
And you know what? The principal had a fucking point! Multiple points! They did host a party after school hours where dozens of students broke into the school and potentially caused mess or damage. They were stealing Wifi to the point where it was slowing down the network. They did have a room with a mattress where two students were just caught in the act of trying to hook up. He was being petty about the mural, but other than that? He’s not wrong. I love Daphne but looking at it from the POV of a meanie adult, she’s enabled a lot of irresponsible actions with this foyer regardless of possible negative consequences.
But mostly? I don’t care about this. I’m weary of how the foyer has encroached on Lucas’ season the way the bus took over Sana’s season. I only gave a shit about the bus because as it meant something to Sana with reconciling her Norwegian culture with her Muslim/Moroccan culture, and because I wanted to see the girl squad have fun in the bus, not because I cared about the bus in itself and how big it is or whether it has certain features or if they can afford a bus as opposed to a van. Likewise, I care about the foyer only in how it relates to the main characters, and so far mostly it’s just Daphne’s investment in it.  Lucas’ investment in the foyer is mainly that he and Eliott did the mural and fucked there, a scene that was ridiculous in itself, so I have a hard time caring about it.
But like … if Lucas really cared about this foyer instead of seeming just along for the ride for most of its development? It would make more thematic sense in the season. Like if he and Eliott were more actively involved in fixing up the foyer all season instead of just the mural scene, if it really represented something to them. Say he and Eliott had more meetings and flirtations in there. Or Lucas secretly crashed here when he was having problems at home. If this foyer really felt important to Lucas. Because honestly, I feel like his involvement is mostly “the girls asked him to do something and he did it because he had nothing better to do/got railroaded into it.”
He does text later that the mural is all he has left of Eliott. But the mural is now safe? The principal backed down from painting over the mural. So again … who cares.
IDK, I feel like there were so many ways this could be better. For example, if the foyer was more actively a place that represented diversity and LGBT rights and anti-racism and political activism. If the mural had some legitimate political commentary behind it, or they’d hung a pride flag somewhere and the principal came in and told them to take it down. Or maybe he just got word that a gay couple (aka Lucas and Eliott) were being snuggly in here - not that they banged, just that they were kissing and holding hands in a place that made them feel safe and welcome, and he came in to shut it down in a way that was loaded with microaggressions against them. Then the foyer would genuinely feel like something that needed to be protected. As it is, I’m just like … he’s not wrong about anything he said, lmao, and the idea that the foyer is some haven of diversity and different people coming together feels totally tacked on.
Clip 7 - Lucas’ mom is great
Lucas goes to church and meets with his mom. His mom greets him warmly and hugs him, so that’s very sweet. But it turns out Lucas’ dad isn’t coming. Mama blames it on leaving too many voicemails for him, and that she thinks he doesn’t want to see her anymore since the separation. Nah, I think Lucas’ dad is just a turd, and probably a big homophobe.
Mama says people are the way they are, you can’t try to change them, they have good qualities and their faults. We just need time to understand. So kinda similar to what Basile said earlier about taking people as they are. Lucas ponders that and they go inside the church.
I’m kinda ehhh on them using a church for this scene, considering there hasn’t been as much religious symbolism in this season? Lucas’ mom did send him Bible texts, and there was the Lucas light/dark stuff, but that didn’t seem explicitly tied to religion the way the Isak birth/rebirth stuff was through the 21:21 reference, or the baptism imagery, Even’s Halloween costume, the presence of Christmas? However, I could totally just be missing something. And I don’t think it’s wrong for them to use a church, just that I think it’s a church because it was a church in Skam, rather than because they built up the religious symbolism in this season.
Clip 8 - Run for your love
Lucas and his mom are in church. There are some shots of candles so I guess that’s a tie-in to the light/dark imagery. Or that Lucas is finally seeing the light, heh.
The mass starts and soon Lucas gets a text from Lucille about how no one can find Eliott and they’re freaking out. So Eliott himself doesn’t send Lucas a text, let alone a goodbye text. He’s totally gone off the grid.
We get a montage through Lucas and Eliott’s relationship as the priest talks about how believers can find peace and comfort in God, God gives us the strength we need. No matter your sorrow, God accepts you and you’ll never be alone because God is with you. The church is your shelter. Mixed in with the priest’s words are images of Eliott, so it comes across pretty clearly that Eliott = God in this scenario? Lucas finds peace and comfort in Eliott, he gets strength through him, he’s not alone with Eliott.
I think this would come across a bit stronger if they had built up that religious symbolism throughout the season, because otherwise the Eliott = Lucas’ God thing is a little ... random. I get that they probably just wanted the priest’s words to resonate with Lucas rather then trying to say Eliott = God as a metaphor, but it’s one of those those things where they could have subtly planted connections all along. (I don’t remember any but I’m also finishing this recap like two months later, so I could’ve forgotten something.)
The montage is kinda funny if you consider that Lucas is in church, flashing back to the better times of him boning Eliott. I mean ... who wouldn’t, really.
I enjoy Seinabo Sey and appreciate Skam France using so much of her music, but at first I wasn’t sure how I feel about this choice of song. Is it too on the nose (“I’ll remember you” for a flashback montage)? Skam used plenty of songs with lyrics that described what was happening on screen. Does it fit the church setting? Eh, I don’t think a church scene needs a religious soundtrack. So the song choice has grown on me a bit since then.
I think the reason I was somewhat hesitant about the montage is that Lucas gets a text that Eliott is missing and he just sits there for a few minutes flashing back to the good ol’ days instead of reacting immediately like oh shit, Eliott’s disappeared. Even if they’re not in a relationship, that’s still cause for concern. Whereas with Isak, he didn’t quite understand Even’s text at first; he just smiled and sat down because Even loved him and he read the text in a purely positive way. It was when he realized Even’s text was a possible suicide note that he left the church to go after him. I guess because Lucas was remembering his relationship with Eliott, he was able to figure out where Eliott might be? But still, seems like he should’ve reacted instantly to Eliott possibly being in trouble.
Lucas decides to go and tells his mom. They exchange I love yous, which is sweet and a great closing note for this relationship. The shot of him walking down the aisle feels like a direct homage to OG.
“Remember me under the sun” - OK so I guess that’s another light reference.
The growing intensity of the music is good and I was getting into the scene but dear lord, the slow mo of Lucas running is ABSURD. Why did this turn into Chariots of Fire all of a sudden? Why is Lucas running through the actual street and not the sidewalk, he’s going to get by a car!
OH MY GOD HE ALMOST DID GET HIT BY A CAR, WHY WAS THAT NECESSARY, I STARTED LAUGHING MY ASS OFF
Like was that some outtake where Axel Auriant almost got mowed down because they asked him to run in the fucking street and they decided to keep it in for the ~drama? Talk about a mood killer.
I do like that Lucas knew where to go because he knew it was a place special to Eliott, and to the two of them. And that he found Eliott in the dark and that Lucas brings the light on both of them (literally, with his cell phone). Maxence does a nice job of crying and looking heartbroken.
This scene isn’t bad (except for the running and almost getting hit by the car…. why) but it does makes me think the remakes really need to start from scratch with the climax of this season. Not just recreate an O Helga Natt-ish clip with similar setting, music, dialogue, or story beats, but to look independently at what the themes of the season are - not OG, their season - and then build up something that’s consistent with that. That’s a big part of why O Helga Natt is such a masterpiece: It ties together Isak’s main lessons throughout the season, as well as paying off foreshadowing and incorporating multiple motifs and threads of symbolism that have been developed along the way.
So for example, just a small observation: Lucas tells Eliott he’s not alone anymore. Which is of course a line from O Helga Natt, and a line that does have a powerful meaning in this context. I’m not saying it’s a bad line in the slightest. But in O Helga Natt, Isak was saying it as a direct response to Even’s text message, in which he says “everyone is alone anyway.” And also in response to something Even said back in episode 5, about “the brain is alone” and being alone with your thoughts and the only way to escape is death. And to some degree in the hotel clip when Even said the alone way to have something forever was to lose it, just after they were talking about Isak and Even in infinite universes, as if Even was talking about losing Isak and being alone. It was established that Even had a fear of being alone. Here, Eliott does not send Lucas a text, so “You’re not alone anymore” is not a direct response to anything. And I don’t remember Eliott saying anything about being alone in episode 5, having that line of Even’s, or in episode 8 (Again, I took a long break between recaps so it’s very possible I just forgot Eliott’s prior comments about being alone to Lucas, feel free to remind me.) So while the line is sweet and supportive and powerful, IMO it lacks the extra punch that Isak’s “You’re not alone” did simply because Skam’s writing was tighter. I mean ... if Isak hadn’t said “You’re not alone,” would Lucas have said it to Eliott? Might he have said something else relevant to their relationship, rather than recreating an existing iconic line? I don’t know if I’m explaining myself clearly, and I truly don’t mean to make a mountain out of a molehill, because the line is perfectly fine here. It’s just that I think the remakes need to not lean on O Helga Natt so much, and instead rely on their own ingredients in the season to craft this climactic scene, if they want to create something with the most impact.
Social Media/General Comments:
Lucas doesn’t text Mika after the boat clip, he texts Manon. Which seems completely in line with those relationships, in my opinion. Isak texting Eskild and Eskild dropping everything to go home after the hotel is a testament to that relationship’s strength, but Lucas and Mika still don’t seem to have that degree of closeness, even if their relationship has gotten stronger. It’s Manon who Lucas seems closest to, the one who can cry with him and sit in silence together just for comfort.
However, Lucas doesn’t give Manon the details or even imply something is wrong in his text to her; he writes a (typo-filled) draft where he explains what happened on the boat and then deletes it. I’m assuming he told her afterwards, but this is a really good detail! Skam France and other remakes sometimes miss innovative ways to use social media to enhance the story, and I think this small touch is quite clever. Lucas is shaken and distraught after the boat and writes this messy draft of a text to Manon, spilling everything, but he deleted it and went with a neutral text, holding back the information. The reason I think he deleted his explanatory text is not just because of how messed up it was, but because writing out everything - Eliott disappeared, he’s bipolar - would make it more real, and Lucas cannot handle that it the moment, it’s too much.
Mika sends Lucas a link to a sad song, for help with his wallowing, I guess. Maybe not the best thing to send tbh, but it was kindly meant. And Lucas posted on his IG story that he was listening to it, so perhaps it helped him.
The pity party was documented quite well on IG. I wonder what Eliott thought if he saw any of it? Lucas drunk and dancing ... could go “he’s upset” or “he’s glad to be rid of me” which tbh I could see happening in a depressed mindset.
Eliott posted colors to his IG - like just colors - and deleted them really fast. Which is another good use of social media here, possibly to illustrate his changing moods, to hint at his mindset (like his depression being just a dark gradient) I’m kind of like ... why didn’t they do something like this last week to hint at his mania?
Lucas contacted Eliott via text, saying he wanted to see him or talk. That would’ve been good to see in a clip, really.
People using Imane’s BS speech on IG to promote the common room cause = LMAO.
Lucas says the mural is all he has left of Eliott, which is at least some reason he’d care about protecting it and the foyer. The boys encourage him to go to Eliott’s place, and Lucas is hesitant, saying he was told to stay away. However, then there’s an IG story of Lucas outside Eliott’s building.
Lol, OK, that’s something that definitely would be better as a clip rather than a stalker-y IG post. I mean, when you think about it, isn’t it kind of weird for him to broadcast that to the world? I guess he hoped Eliott would see it and know Lucas cares and wants to talk to him?
But sooo many questions. Like ... did Lucas try to ring the bell or contact Eliott while he was there ... or did he just stand looking up at his window like a creep ... how long was he standing there ... I don’t think they thought this one through. Yeah, absolutely should have been an actual clip so we know what the hell happened.
Ok I realize it is sooooo after the fact, and regarding this topic that has already been discussed to death, I hate to come back with another rant like AND ANOTHER THING!!!! but at some point I came to another realization about why Yann’s reaction to Lucas’ coming out is bad and stupid and I wanted to get it out because it has been bugging me.
Yann’s reaction is bad and stupid because the “you weren’t honest with me/told everyone else but me” reaction is often fake and disingenuous. Like I hate to generalize and I’m sure that somewhere in the history of the world, someone has genuinely been hurt that their friend came out to other people before them, but also, sorry, I don’t think it’s a common authentic reaction. It’s a smokescreen for homophobia.
So let’s talk about Please Like Me. Please Like Me is one of my favorite non-Skam shows ever. Like Skam S3, its protagonist, Josh, is a young gay man just accepting that he is gay and coming out (although he’s older than Isak). Like Isak, Josh has a mentally ill mother. Like Skam S3, Josh gets into a relationship with a mentally ill person. It’s less idealistic and more painful than Skam, but still completely worth a watch, I highly recommend checking it out.
At one point in Please Like Me, Josh goes with his boyfriend, Arnold, to Arnold’s birthday party with Arnold’s family. Arnold is not out to his family yet and is planning to come out to them at the party. However, in a previous episode Arnold told his friends that his dad has said he doesn’t like gay people and told Arnold to quit singing in a choir because people would think he was a (homophobic slur) and beat him up. So, Arnold’s dad is an established homophobic asshole!
At the party, Arnold announces to his family that he’s gay and dating Josh. Arnold’s brother and mom are like “Yeah, we knew,” which is not the best thing to say but they’re overall chill and supportive. Meanwhile, Arnold’s dad stands there with a sour look on his face. When he does finally speak, he says that he’s been “backed into a corner” - presumably because the rest of family supports Arnold, and because they have other guests with them looking expectantly at him waiting for him to say he’s OK with Arnold being gay. Like he’s basically saying he doesn’t have the freedom to react negatively. You know, something a total non-homophobe would say! Then he starts going in on Arnold for lying to him, and saying the biggest problem is that Arnold didn’t feel he could be honest with him. (Then he knocks over a croquembouche.) Arnold’s dad leaves, but not before telling his wife that Arnold should be gone when he gets back.
Why am I bringing up Please Like Me? Because Please Like Me, created-written-directed-acted by real-life gay man Josh Thomas, is smart enough to recognize that homophobes often direct their disapproval into other excuses to be upset when someone comes out. Arnold’s dad didn’t stand there and rant about how homosexuality is wrong or gross. He didn’t say anything about homosexuality at all. Instead, he funneled his feelings into the weaselly excuse of “you weren’t honest with me.” (This right after Arnold has said, in his coming out speech, that his best chance at happiness is to be honest. Honesty in this case acknowledging he’s gay and has a boyfriend.) But let’s be real: if that were the case, if Arnold’s dad were upset about the lying rather than his son’s sexuality, would he really get that angry? Enough to effectively kick his son out of the house? To knock over a goddamn croquembouche? No, this scene is obviously about a father being pissed that his son is gay. But he feels “backed into a corner” and it’s not like he can say he’s upset that his son is gay in front of everyone else, in front of the guests, his son’s boyfriend, his wife and other son who have known for a long time and are fine with it.
Circling back to Skam France: we had Yann upset enough with Lucas coming out to him, for Totally Non-Homophobic Reasons, to walk away from him because he was hurt Lucas didn’t come out to him first. And I do believe the writer intended for Yann to not be homophobic at all! But it’s such a shitty, cheap excuse for drama, such a flimsy rationale for Yann’s reaction, one that doesn’t fit his prior behavior at all, that frankly, it pings too close to a smokescreen. Like Skam France is trying to pass off this blatantly artificial reaction as genuine. If someone reacted like this IRL, my gut feeling would be that they were a fucking homophobe. They’re most likely homophobic but aware that openly saying bad things about gay people, openly expressing their disapproval, is not a good look for them. Or they’re homophobic but trying to tell themselves they’re not by channeling their disappointment into other reasons that don’t rely on discomfort with homosexuality. It’s completely plausible and even probable for people to have some homophobic hangups under the surface, that in theory they were OK with gay people but when your best friend is staring you in the face telling you he’s in love with another man, those hangups might suddenly rise up.
And if somehow we give these reactions the benefit of the doubt, that someone is truly upset because “you lied to me” or “you didn’t tell me first?” - that person’s still a selfish asshole. Think about it. Your friend is confessing an extremely vulnerable secret about themselves, something that may have caused them great internal stress and pain, and you’re mad that they didn’t tell you sooner? Fuck off.
Anyway. The point I’m making is: in a Doylist sense, I think Yann’s reaction is not homophobic. The Skam France team really didn’t think of it that way. In a Watsonian sense, I call bullshit. Yann walking off during the coming out scene is most plausible if Yann actually had a homophobic reaction to Lucas’ coming out, and needed some time to process it before accepting Lucas’ sexuality. His explanation to Lucas is weak and unlikely. If it is true, that makes Yann a self-centered asshole. I know people don’t react perfectly and obviously Yann stepped the fuck up for Lucas afterwards but let’s acknowledge it for what it is, prioritizing one’s entitlement to someone else’s deepest, most painful secrets over their comfort and safety in keeping those secrets.
To be clear, I don’t hate Yann, not at all, and I attribute this mess solely to bad writing. It’s one of those things where the intent is different from the finished product. In analysis of Yann or Skam France or whatever, I’d acknowledge the intended purpose of that creative decision to make Yann walk away. But I’m also acknowledging that this creative decision is some stupid shit, lmao. And I’m aware the screenwriter is gay, and for all I know this is based on personal experience, but for now this scenario feels fake and manufactured only for drama, and inauthentic to how people would genuinely think and react in these scenarios. Someone who walks out on their friend when said friend comes out is probably homophobic to some degree, or else self-centered as fuck. Simple as that.
I am not French, so please feel free to correct me on any translation or cultural notes that I missed.
Like I said, I took a break from recaps, so I also might have forgotten certain details of this season, feel free to remind me of any of those, too!
If you got this far - and if you are still reading this after all this time - thank you very much, I love you!

The day seemed to pass slowly, even though you were looking forward to meeting up with Jonathan, even if he was just bringing you home. That just gave you more of an opportunity to talk with him and get to know more about him. When the final bell rung you rushed to your locker to pick up all your things, your heart raced, why were you so nervous? Did you actually have a crush on Jonathan Byers? Was that an actual question you were asking yourself?
You closed your locker and sighed heavily, maybe you had a tiny crush. You looked away from your locker and saw Jonathan walking down the hallway, he stopped beside you and smiled,
“Ready to go?” he asked with a small smile, you nodded happily before following him out to his car. You both shared small talk as you walked towards his car and it continued while he drove. Your love for art seemed to peak Jonathan's interest and his love for photography peaked yours, it was funny how cliche this was. The two of you laughed at all the crazy things you talked about. You had never seen this side of him before, he was smiling, laughing, being social. This was something different for the both of you.
The drive was shorter then you wished, you wished to talk more to him but you knew he had to get home,
“We should hang out sometime,” you say with a small smile, “I would love to look at your photos,” you tell him, you could have sworn you had seen his cheeks turn pink,
“Yeah, I would love to show you my photos,” he began, “That is if you would show me your sketches,” you giggled softly,
“I think I can do that,” you went silent for a moment before looking at him, “Thank you for the ride Jonathan, I will see you tomorrow,” you say, he nodded,
“If you want, I can pick you up and bring you to school,” he suggested,
“I would love that.”
The rest of the night you spent doing your homework and thinking of the day you had with Jonathan. Though you had only really spent a few hours together, it was great how fast you two became friends. The two of you may have been the quiet ones of the school, maybe fate wanted this? You shook the thought from your head. Fate, really? Was that what you had turned to? Fate? You laughed at yourself, really (Y/N)? You laid on your bed and sighed before you knew it you fell asleep.
You woke up to your parent screaming at you to wake up, rolling over you groaned,
“I’ll be down in a second,” you yell back before pulling yourself from bed. Dragging yourself across the room, you threw on a pair of clean clothes, brushed your hair before leaving your room with your bag slung over your shoulder. You ate your breakfast until you heard a car honk. That had to be Jonathan, you grabbed your bag before heading out the door but that wasn’t Jonathan's car...
“(Y/F/N), what are you doing here?” you asked slightly confused as to why your friend was here,
“I’ll tell you on the way, Jonathan told me to come pick you up,” you felt your heart sink, did something happen? Maybe your feelings were a bit too strong... You got into the passenger side of the car, you couldn’t help but think maybe Jonathan didn’t want to be friends,
“(Y/N), I know what you’re thinking. Jonathan wanted to pick you up... I know he did,” he really hadn’t told them that, they had just assumed, “His brother went missing last night,” your eyes snapped up to them,
“Will?” you question, you hadn’t met Jonathan's brother but in the short amount of time you talked he had spoken about him. It was clear the two siblings were close.
“Yeah,” they began, “Jonathan wanted to stay home with his mom,” you felt relieved that Jonathan didn’t hate you but upset that his brother was missing,
“But why didn’t he tell me himself?” you question softly, your friend sighed,
“I think he was nervous, yeah his brother went missing but he didn’t want to disappoint you,” they said glancing at you, there was silence after that. You thought for a moment, you weren’t mad at him, just upset that he didn’t tell you. You shook the thought from your head, now wasn’t the time to be thinking about that. Now was the time to be there for Jonathan.
The two of you arrived at school, it was as if nothing had happened. Everyone went on with their life, but you remembered the Byers weren’t exactly the talk of the town.
Half the day had already passed, it was crazy how fast the day was moving but today you didn’t have Jonathan to sit with. Joining your friend for lunch was always an option but you always felt uncomfortable around their friends. Not that they were mean but you being your socially awkward self, you found that sitting with a few new people wasn’t exactly on the agenda. Today was a drawing kind of day.
Finding a nice spot outside, you sat with your sketchbook on your lap. Without thinking your hand just began to move, drawing random lines and shapes in hopes to come up with something. Often times this was a good warm-up for you but it never really amounted to much, just something to keep you busy for a few minutes. Though it wasn’t your favorite thing, you began to draw the landscape and all the things you saw in front of you. You would do anything to take your mind off of Jonathan. You just couldn’t.
Before you knew it the bell rung, packing your things up you went back inside and to your class.
The end of the day came slower then you wanted, your thoughts were occupied the entire time. Once again, you met with your friend who would give you a ride home,
“(Y/N), you need to stop worrying about him. I’m sure he is fine,” they tried to calm you down but nothing seemed to work,
“His brother is missing (Y/F/N), that’s a lot to take in,” you say softly, “I’m sure both him and his mother is worried sick,” you state, you fought back the urge to go to his home and check on him but that would be creepy. Wouldn’t it? When you pulled into your driveway your friend sighed,
“Just don’t worry about it okay, they will find him. I promise. Then everything will go back to normal.” You hesitated and nodded, maybe they were right, maybe things would be alright.
It wasn’t until a few days passed when you realized that things were not okay. It had turned into a full search party. Will was truly missing. Day by day, you tried to stay by Jonathan but he pushed you away. You knew that this wasn’t your fault but you also knew that this was a hard time for him. Seeing him in such a state honestly hurt you more than anything, then hearing how Carol and Tommy talked about him made you angrier. Why did they have to be so rude? He didn’t do anything to them. Today was the day you weren’t going to back down, you were going to comfort Jonathan, whether he wanted you to or not.
When the lunch bell rung you followed Jonathan outside,
“Jonathan,” you called, he stopped in his tracks and looked behind him. You walked up to him casually, he was quiet.
“I just wanted to make sure you were alright,” you say softly, “I’m worried about you,” you whisper looking down at your hands. He was quiet for a moment before he spoke up,
“I’m fine, (Y/N). Don’t worry okay,” he replied causing you to sigh,
“I can’t help but worry Jonathan,” you looked up at him, your eyes locking almost instantly, “You don’t talk with me anymore, I miss having our conversations,” you whisper, he saw the sadness in your eyes. You had made friends with a few people but only a few of them truly understood you. You held back your tears as you looked back down to your feet. You just didn’t want to lose a friend.  You heard shuffling then felt him wrap his arms around you gently pulling you into a gentle hug. You wrapped your arms around him burying your face into his chest. You desperately tried to hold back tears but you couldn’t, a few tears rolled down your cheeks. You stayed together for a few minutes until you were able to calm down, you looked up at him, gently you wiped a tear from your cheek.
“I’m sorry, I’m just so worried,” you say softly, he chuckled softly as the two of you looked up at each other.
“Don’t apologize,” he sighed, “I should be apologizing, I’m sorry I worried you. I’m not exactly used to others being worried,” he admitted, you nodded slightly,
“Just remember I am here for you Jonathan. No matter what,” he went silent for a moment, you were curious what he was thinking.
“I know (Y/N), but I can’t drag you into this. I don’t want you to get hurt,” you became confused. Extremely confused. Why would you get hurt?
“Jonathan? What’s going on?” you ask softly, he seemed to be conflicted before he leaned down kissing your lips. You were shocked by this motion but quickly responded. You were nervous and unsure, this was your first kiss after all. When Jonathan pulled away the two of you looked at each other, your heart was pounding and your mind was racing.
“I’m sorry (Y/N),” he walked off towards his car and drove off. You were frozen in place still a bit shocked. Jonathan? What did this mean? Your heart swelled but it shattered as he drove away. Was this actual rejection?  Not bothering to go back to the school, you just walked home. Your parents weren’t home and wouldn’t be until later. You flopped onto your bed, you let out a soft sob as you laid there. What had just happened?
Over the next few days you avoided everyone, your feelings were still a bit confused. Jonathan had been around but he had been hanging out with Nancy. You saw them together and your heart broke, the way he looked at her and the way she looked at him. It was clear that he liked her. You avoided him like the plague, he was your only friend but you couldn’t bring yourself to face him. Your lips still tingled from that day even though your mind had convinced you that the kiss meant nothing.  You couldn’t believe you had been played so easily. You couldn’t believe you fell for it. You wouldn’t let that happen again.

Post season 7 – related to this post I made
[Omg help me I’m back on my shit again. After months of having been unable to write I can’t seem to stop. Have fun guys. This is suuuuuuper self-indulgent by the way. Kudos to anyone who makes it to the end.]
[Important PSA after the first comments on Ao3: No bashing the team, be it in the tags or in a reblog. Lance is not a prize to be won by either side]
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Once might have counted as nothing more than a fluke. A second time she might play off as a coincidence maybe. By the third time, Veronica had a sinking feeling plaguing her. After the fifth time, she had stopped counting and instead started to consider that this had to be more than a mere “fluke”.
Far be it from her to hold grudges or make hasty decisions, but the more time Veronica spent around team Voltron, the angrier she became almost every instance.
Honestly, the fact that her ire had grown enough to be noticeable even to her family was admirable in itself – there were few people that could pride themselves in having disturbed Veronica’s inner peace so profoundly that she was falling back into bad habits.
“You’re chewing on your pencil.”
She startled, taken aback by Marco’s nonchalance. She cleared her throat and demonstratively put the poor, abused tool down to recline in the uncomfortable chair they had stolen from another room down the hall so that at meals everyone had a chance to sit at the relatively small workbench that served as their table and “office” outside of office.
But the last one only truly concerned Veronica herself.
Marco was idly scrolling through something on a datapad, finger lazily dragging along the surface. Judging by his expression it had to be pictures from before the war had broken out – small glimpses of the past he had managed to take with himself on an even smaller chip he had guarded with his life. It was incredible he had ever thought of taking them with him, much less having stored them there in the first place.
The original chip still hung around his neck, attached to a sturdy necklace and protected by a plastic casing that had seen better days already. A testament to the trials and losses the journey from Cuba had brought with it.
She caught a glimpse of a picture –fairly old, since she caught her nine year old herself in the left-hand corner – and she felt something in her chest tighten as she caught sight of Abuela smiling up from an angle. Such a sweet smile, unsuspecting of all the terrible things that were to come.
There was no way that Marco had not noticed her taking off her glasses to wipe at the corners of her eyes, but he had the grace to not further comment on it.
“I miss her.”
“Me too.”
She wished she could have seen her at least one more time. Once the Galra had arrived she had not managed anything more than to text her family in a group chat, telling them to run and hide.
After communications had been cut by the invaders, there had been many nights where Veronica had lain awake, wondering, worrying, sometimes crying in the privacy of her small bathroom.
So, when she had reunited with them months later after the missions in the tunnels, the joy had blinded her to the terrible truth for a few minutes.
Knowing that her family was mostly safe and unharmed was a blessing, but as her parents sat her down and told her in soft whispers that their Abuela had suffered a stroke or heart attack during their crossing, Veronica could not stop herself from thinking that it was unfair.
One more time. What she wouldn’t give to tell her one more time that she loved her.
But it was too late, and as she rationalized (as much as it hurt), she was so much luckier than many of her friends and comrades. Many of them had no more family to return to outside of this building.
The gurgling and hiss of the faucet had Veronica looking up, watching with a small smile as Marco came back with a glass of water she accepted gladly.
“Thanks.”
Marco shrugged, corner of his mouth twitching upward a little.
He had been the one to try CPR on Abuela when it had happened. Of course he would, seeing how he had been a lifeguard at Varadero beach for a few years now. Still, it had not worked. Veronica hoped that Marco did not guilt himself over it.
Likely sensing she might ask first if he did not intervene, he pointed to her pencil, her gnawing having left clear indents in the smooth plastic: “What’s up with that?”
Veronica took a large gulp of water first, deciding if she should answer honestly.
Her mind was made-up instantly.
“Lance has been considering staying with us.”
Marco blinked at her in clear shock. His flat palm came to slap at his forehead before it started smoothing his hair back.
“Oooooh… so that’s what the whole morning crying was about.”
Veronica nodded. Neither she nor Lance had explained themselves to the rest of their family and so far she had respected that, even if Maria, Luis, Mama and Papa had needled her. They were worried and Veronica understood it all too well, but Lance was the one who needed to decide for himself when to open up about his impending choice. Today though had put a few things into perspective for her and she needed a second opinion for that, and out of all of their other family members, Marco was one of the more discrete ones. He’d know not to blab.
“I personally think he should stay.”
Marco did give her a questioning look at that but waved his hand for her to go on.
“A team should be about respect and trust. And there is nothing against teasing each other or making jokes. Even our MFE fighter pilots tend to do it,” she smiled fondly at that. One might not be able to tell, but those kids were masters of banter in their own right. According to Veronica’s own tally chart Leifsdottir and Kinkade were tied for first place, not by the amount of shots fired but by the accuracy and truthfulness of them. Griffin and Rizavi, even as a united force, stood no chance.
Veronica’s smile vanished though, as she remembered the interactions she had been privy to over the past week, where she had taken over for a communications officer that had fallen ill.
It was probably due to their late night conversation and the endless praise Lance would wax about his teammates, but what Veronica had seen and heard instantly made that cold yet blazing protectiveness resurge.
As she had concluded, team Voltron was indeed made up of wonderful individuals, unique and incredible in their own ways.
When one gave it a bit of thought, having former cadet Keith Kogane work almost seamlessly with a team felt like a fever dream. While Veronica had never personally interacted with the defiant youth back in the day, she had heard complaints from all of the staff forced to deal with him. The calm leader giving instructions over the comms was almost unrecognizable. Captain Shirogane always seemed to swell with quiet pride whenever it was pointed out.
Veronica could understand him all too well – if anyone were to talk that same way about Lance, she would likely not react any differently.
Pidge, or rather Katie Holt, was indeed just as smart as Lance had emphasized. Not that there had been any doubt about it during the briefings and strategy talks leading up to their final stand, the young woman coming up with a multitude of scenarios whenever a new element and detail was added to their plans. Veronica was all too curious about finding out just how she was processing things so quickly even without a computer handy. In regards to snark, she and Rizavi would get along wonderfully.
Hunk was the main reason they had managed to salvage many of their vehicles in the aftermath of the fight. She had yet to taste any of his cooking (which Lance reminded her daily was to die for), but what she could say was that he was a creative engineer. Just the other day, she had listened to him chatter with his friends all the while helping one of their engineering groups restarting an emergency generator for a medical facility. In the end, he and the other engineers had ended up building it from scratch, Hunk throwing in suggestion to get the most out of it. Some of these adjustment sounded downright alien - which they most likely were.
Princess Allura herself was one of the most regal and beautiful women Veronica had ever had the pleasure to meet. Which may be why she was rooting for her brother and, subsequently, liked flustering Lance with comments and remarks regarding Allura’s interest in him. But as much as Allura was a princess, she was also a kind and devoted person, one of the first to rise to coordinate the actions for reconstruction and the last to leave in the evening.
Amazing people in their own rights and yet…
“I do not think staying with team Voltron as it currently is will do Lance a lot of good in the long run.”
She looked at Marco over the rim of her glasses.
Her earnestness must have hit a nerve, since slowly Marco’s surprised expression shifted from disbelief to concern, his brow furrowing and mouth pinched.
“What makes you say that? Lance seems to like them. Can’t be that bad then, can they?”
Veronica let those words settle a little.
No, the members of team Voltron were not bad people, not by a long shot. But just as any other individuals with agency, they had their faults and made mistakes.
Allura, as Veronica had noticed, could be somewhat stubborn if she saw herself in the right.
Hunk could be dismissive of others when under pressure.
Pidge had a tendency to be unrelenting, be it in her very scientific explanations or tasks she had set herself.
Keith seemed to not always think things through entirely, sometimes getting blindsided by details that had not been discussed prior, ultimately tripping him up.
But all of these, in Veronica’s opinion, were excusable.
She needed to take a deep breath, indignation rising inside her like bile. It was not helpful or necessary at the moment. She needed to keep a clear head. Marco’s judgement need not be clouded by her feelings.
“Did you know that when you are in a relationship long enough, you become deaf to certain things being repeatedly said, both parties no longer noticing it even happens?”
Marco gave a cough that soon turned into full-blown laughter.
“Tell me about it. Marta would never shut up about me messing with her nifty system for all of our clothes,” his expression lost a bit of its mirth. Veronica could only guess that he was mentally revisiting the rooms of a house that was probably destroyed like much else on Earth, “After a while, it just became a running gag. Heh, even the kids were getting a laugh out of it.”
“Exactly.”
He started at her sudden interjection, at the harshness in her voice as she gripped the glass she was still holding with a little more force.
She took another deep breath as Marco slowly came closer, taking with him his chair with protesting screeches from chair legs dragging across the floor.
Once sitting, he leaned forward, crossed arms resting on the table’s surface, face grim.
“What’s going on?”
Veronica raised her left hand, elbow still on the table and started massaging her temple with her thumb. The pain when she pressed just the right spot was distracting enough to calm her.
“I’ve been dealing with communications for a while now, to help with coordinating the reconstruction efforts. Ever since Lance told me about wanting to quit, I might have paid more attention to him and his team, however subconsciously,” her lips twitched but there was nothing funny about all of it, “And this past week, since taking over for officer Anatoly, I’ve been in charge of communicating them their tasks. For that, I’m on the comms constantly and I hear everything that’s going on.”
She took off her glasses, putting them in front of her, wiping at her tired eyes. The screens were doing them little good.
Marco was kind enough to wait, even went to refill her glass and Veronica thanked him for it.
“I cannot tell you how many times Lance has been treated as ‘dumb’ in this one week alone.”
Marco’s stared at her open-mouthed, indignation making his shoulders hunch and his brow furrow so deeply that Veronica was almost afraid the resulting wrinkles would be permanent.
His mouth closed with an audible clack that had both of them wincing, but it did obviously not quell Marco’s anger.
“All of them?” He merely asked, and suddenly Veronica was no longer sure this had been such a good idea.
She put a firm hand on his shoulder, felt him tremor slightly under it.
“Not all of them.”
It still did not seem to appease him.
“What about his commanding officer? Shouldn’t he intervene?”
Veronica resisted the urge to suck in her lips, thinking back to all of the instances where Captain Shirogane had indeed intervened when the team’s discussions went too far off topic for them to still be entirely concentrated on their tasks.
Her heart felt heavy.
When words failed her, she merely shook her head.
“Just as I said: you become deaf at some point.”
The chair went crashing down as Marco surged to his feet, stomping towards the door, and it took all of Veronica’s strength and weight to stop him as she latched onto his wrist with both her hands.
He turned on her sharply, his eyes ablaze with fury and Veronica was so, so glad that she was not at the receiving end of that raw fury.
“This solves nothing,” she reminded him, her voice calm while everything inside her was anything but.
Marco tried to unlatch her, but if he thought her training was for nothing then he was sorely mistaken.
“MY BROTHER DID NOT GO TO WAR TO BE CALLED DUMB!”
His voice boomed through the confined space and Veronica was beyond thankful that right now everyone else was still gone, that luckily it was just them here.
Marco gave another shot at throwing her off, but just as with the first time, Veronica stood her ground, digging the heels of her shoes into the floor.
“I agree with you, I do,” she amended, voice growing louder at the last few words as Marco still resisted, “But antagonizing the people he looks up to and loves is not going to help him!”
Because her brother had told her as much. Shortly after their heart-to-heart, Lance had repeatedly come to her when he could not sleep. As far as Veronica could guess, the impending decision was robbing Lance of sleep. As if recurring nightmares he refused talking about were not already doing a fine job of it. On one of those nights, as Lance had heavily leaned into her side with drooping eyes, he had whispered about the time he had spent hunting coins in a mall’s fountain to get Pidge some retro console from Earth. He had fondly whispered of Keith’s cluelessness about simple cheers, mentioned Hunk and Pidge’s reprogrammed Paladude, a gaming session with Coran and their team leader (and Lance still refused to tell her why he had suddenly been crying at that one), or how Allura had helped him train with a cool sword he had yet to show Veronica.
Lance, undoubtedly, loved his team just as much as he loved them. And Veronica did not doubt that if she asked the team, they would likely call Lance their friend. That did not mean however, that they were properly showing their appreciation.
Veronica would be lying if she said that none of their own family had never called Lance a ‘brat’ or a ‘dumbass’ on occasion. Because Lance, for all of his helpfulness and sweetness, could be a pain to be around. Still, at the end of the end of the day and after every sibling squabble, there never had been any doubt that they loved and supported him.
And as she had observed recently, Lance had very much mellowed out and matured during his stay in space.
Which was why she agreed with Marco’s statement but could not allow her very loyal older brother to hunt down any perceived offenders on Lance’s behalf.
Lance did not need added conflict in his life, and Veronica would not forgive herself if she were to become the source of it.
Marco gave a huff but remained still, face turned to the closed door leading to the hall.
Veronica seized her chance.
“I want Lance to be happy. I promised him that I would respect his decision no matter what. And there might be a chance that Lance does want to go back out there. You’ve noticed as well, right?”
The way Lance would sometimes look out at the night sky, tiny dots of light reflected in his eyes as he gazed out with a longing that was far beyond any of their understanding. It was the core of Lance’s conflict.
He had seen space and its wonders, was enticed by it like those old sailors by the sirens’ calls, but just like the legendary Odysseus, her brother was tired and weary just like most of his friends.
And if Veronica had to guess, there was a good amount of loyalty involved in Lance’s indecisiveness.
Loyalty to his friends.
Loyalty to his duty as a defender of the universe.
Loyalty to their family.
Marco was growing less tense under her touch, allowing Veronica to let go with one hand to cover her eyes.
“If Lance wants to go back out there, I will let him,” her voice dropped to almost a whisper, “but I do not want him to be stuck with people that will inevitably bring him down.”
There was pressure building behind her eyes.
“I don’t want to lose him too.”
Barely a minute ago, she had held onto her brother to stop him from leaving, and the next she found herself enveloped in a bone crushing hug.
They held onto each other for a long time, Marco drawing back first as he gave her an apologetic smile.
“Is there any way to fix this mess?”
Veronica had given it some thought over the past few days. The conclusion she had come to was daunting.
“I think the first thing that needs to be done is addressing the issue. At this point, I’m afraid that Lance will try to rationalize it.”
When they had been younger, Lance tended to do that a lot. He might grow angry if someone treated him unfairly, but in the end he would always find a way to explain it away. Usually the common nominator was Lance himself. In an educational environment, it had sometimes saved Lance’s behind, since he’d end up applying himself more for upcoming tests.
But this was not school, and this was not merely tests they were talking about.
Veronica loathed to think what conclusions her might already have or might come to in the future, should a mission go wrong.
Marco gave a groan next to her, knowing all too well what his sister was referring to.
“What’s more is that Lance is not doing himself any favors. I’m talking about dismissing input that is too complex for him and shutting down attempts to simplify it.”
Because she had heard it herself. Usually it was Pidge, sometimes the Altean advisor that Lance would shut down the moment they went to explain a given topic in depth. At this point, it also no longer mattered whether this behavior was the origin or the result of the team’s perception of Lance.
“You called?”
Marco froze at the voice sounding from the door they had not heard opening, and Veronica felt any hope of formulating a plan of attack fly out of the window.
Marco turning around allowed them to look at Lance who stood in the entrance, head cocked to the side and holding out a generic white plastic bag.
Lance’s eyebrow was drawn up, giving both of them a very questioning look.
His expression was enough to tell them he had undoubtedly heard that last part.
This was not how she wanted this conversation to happen, but if they did not tackle this at once it would only lead to misunderstandings.
Marco was ready to stammer his way through a lie, she could practically hear the gears turning frantically inside his skull, and she decided to intervene at once.
“Actually, yes,” she gestured at the table with a placating smile, faltering a little when she noticed the chair still lying on the ground. That detail did not escape Lance’s notice and he frowned all the harder for it.
This was not going as planned.
Lance needed to be as relaxed as possible. She needed a distraction.
“What do you have there?” She asked, glancing at the plastic bag still dangling from Lance’s wrist. He appeared taken aback by her sudden interest, but a genuine, excited smile spread on his face.
“Oh! Yeah, this is from Hunk. I asked him if he could cook something for you guys, since none of you believe me he’s a good cook.”
He was bouncing over to the area where the plastic plates and cutlery were stored and Veronica watched a little helplessly as Lance set the table for the three of them while Marco quietly put the chair back in its place.
He looked so happy, pouring water into an electric kettle while dumping a few spoonful of a powder substituting coffee into three mugs.
She wanted this to last. She wanted for Lance to smile like this more often, to be happy and not worry about leaving people behind.
Once everything was set for the three of them, Lance saying he hoped the others would come soon, he finally wrangled out an inconspicuous hot pink bowl out of the bag. The moment he removed the lid, Veronica could feel her mouth water.
“Are those...,” Marco started, voice almost an awed whisper.
Lance’s grin was almost reaching his ears: “Yep!”
There was no mistaking it. Veronica would recognize one of her favorites from a mile away.
She knew she was gaping in a very undignified way but…
“How?” she breathed, taking one of the looped pastries between her fingers, inspecting it with wonderment.
“Don’t ask me. I have no idea how Hunk still managed to cook half of the stuff we ate on our trip back and still make it look like Earth food,” his expression momentarily turned into a grimace before easing into something less disgusted, “Sometimes you really don’t wanna know though.“
He shuddered a little while Marco was already biting off half of his buñuelo, slapping the table with the flat of his palm.
“This is so good,” he finally said, looking close to tears.
They laughed good-naturedly as Marco reached for a second, when his first one was still held in his other hand.
It looked and smelled a lot like the pastry they had baked back at home on special occasions. Hunk had even taken care of covering it with thin streaks of dark caramel. It was every bit as soft and tasty as it looked when she took her first bite, and she now understood Marco’s sudden outburst.
It was one of the few pieces of home she’d had in a few years.
“It’s really good,” she said, actually sniffling, making Lance laugh again.
“I know.”
They ate in silence, Lance closing the lid once they each had two (“So there is some for the others!” he had reprimanded Marco), and each taking a sip from their coffee.
Marco had been won over, obvious in how he kept pestering Lance with questions.
“Where did your friend even get all of the ingredients? Do they have a secret stash of cassava here on the base?”
“Once again: don’t ask me, ask Hunk. He can tell you.”
That had Veronica looking up, still cleaning her glasses with the hem of her shirt. Under the automated evening lights, Lance looked a little washed out. Now wonder, his day had been longer than hers, even without actually having spent that much of it outside of the base.
Now or never. She put her glasses back on, turning to Lance fully and garnering his attention at once.
“On that same matter, Lance,” and she almost did not say it, not when this would instantly break this small reprieve from their everyday lives, “you get along with your teammates, don’t you?”
For a few tense seconds it looked like she had broken Lance with her question.
His chuckles were filled with confusion and discomfort.
“What are you talking about? Of course we get along, we’re team Voltron after all.”
She could feel Marco’s nervousness as if it were her own. This was not going to be a nice conversation.
“I’m not merely asking about your cohesiveness as a team, I’m asking about your solidarity as a group of friends.”
Lance was already reclining back into his chair, his eyebrows going up as he stared at her in incomprehension, hands bracing against the edge of the table.
“Veronica, I’m really sorry, but I don’t know what you’re trying to get at.”
She was ready to retort, when Marco beat her to it.
“Are you really okay with your friends calling you dumb?”
She could not believe him. Veronica threw him a glare she hoped would melt his head off but Marco just returned hers without any remorse.
Their attention was drawn back to Lance as he waved his hands around.
“Woah, woah, hold on a tick! What’s this about? And what’s up with you anyway!” He addressed Marco directly, irritation palpable in his voice.
“This is not some kind of joke Lance,” Veronica interjected, giving her younger brother a stern look that threw him off, “You know I’ve been listening to you for a while over your channels, and I admit that I… do not entirely approve of what I’ve heard so far.”
It was more than just “not merely approving” but there was no need to rile Lance up further. If he was any bit as protective of team Voltron as he was of them, there would be no getting through to him by accusing them of anything.
Still, Lance’s eyes moved from her to Marco quickly, obviously not understanding or accepting what was happening right now.
Finally, and sadly, he leaned back with his arms crossed. She wanted to hit Marco for his blunder. This was now going to be harder than ever.
“My relationship with my team is great. What do you even mean by the stuff you heard?”
Band-aid it was then. Quick and painful.
“I am not okay with my brother being repeatedly told and treated as an idiot.”
Hurt flashed across Lance’s face at that but what really caught Veronica’s attention was a flicker of recognition in his eyes. So he was not as unaware as he pretended to be.
He swallowed dryly, hunching in on himself, his eyes shielded by his brown locks with how much he’d lowered his head.
His words were so low she almost did not catch them.
“Doesn’t matter.”
She was ready to explode from tension alone at this point.
“It does, Lance. It matters to me and everyone else!”
She had not meant to shout but this was just too much. Both Lance and Marco jerked in their seats at her outburst. The defiance he had previously shown was quickly bleeding out of Lance, as he made himself even smaller. He suddenly looked like he’d aged at least a decade.
Still, he said nothing, not in his defense nor of his friends. Just sat here with them; a tense silence consuming them all.
Marco was careful in pushing his chair away as he got up. Veronica was unsure what he wanted to do, knowing Marco he might either stay or leave to fight this battle another day.
Relief flooded her when instead of going to the door, Marco circled the table and before Lance could even react, had their brother enveloped in a tight hug. It was a little awkward, Marco having bent down his bulk to embrace Lance while the latter’s arms hovered in the air a little uselessly, blinking back at Veronica in confusion.
Marco was not really a man of words, and Veronica not someone who sprung into action easily. But maybe, with their forces combined, they might be able to get through to him.
“Lance,” she said quietly, her calm voice having her brother glance at her with his still bewildered expression, “I know you really love your friends, but that is no excuse for them to walk all over you when they hurt you. Even if they do it unintentionally.”
He was enraptured by her face, not even caring about the tears undoubtedly clouding his vision.
Time to put her cards on the table.
“I would feel better knowing that, if you go back up there again, you do it with people that respect you and your boundaries.”
There was no more holding back the tears. Lance’s entire face crumbled, one of many small sobs bursting out of him as he kept staring at Veronica pleadingly, his arms at once clinging to Marco so tightly he might leave bruises.
Not that Marco minded, Veronica could see Lance’s jacket straining a little with how tightly he was winding his arms around him.
Veronica settled with smiling at them fondly.
One step at a time while the clock kept on ticking.
