if machete were a bacterium he'd be Serratia marcescens. it produces a vivid scarlet pigment, was first discovered in italy, and was possibly responsible for medieval miracles in which blood (probably bacterial growth) appeared on communion bread. (idk what vasco would be? maybe Staphylococcus aureus because some strains produce a gold-ish pigment...)

hi... i always like seeing ur characters (: i realised i don't know what pepe's girlfriend's name is, or much about her story... also how did they meet?

Heyy, super nice to hear you like my stuff! Thanks for asking, I’m sure you’re not the only one who doesn’t know much about her ahaha. I’m bad at providing info for my settings / characters aside from a few moments of insanity (and Ellinor’s not even mine so it’s even worse). This might get a bit rambly so here’s the tl;dr, more behind the cut:

For context, Ellinor is my partner’s character, and the setting I tag as ”thugs and birds” is our shared 80s inspired AU for a bunch of our characters. These days it’s mostly my fixation playground and while I have my spouse’s blessing to borrow Ellinor for whatever, I do oftentimes just kinda end up vaguing about her because I’m not her main driver, so to speak. (And like a boss I forgot to consult my spouse about any of the details here before she left for a trip abroad so this is all now based on my vibe haha oops, I'll come back with an addendum if I got anything wrong.)

What's the story

So uhh in this setting Ellinor is a songstress who rose to (local) fame and fortune by arranging a, should we say, somewhat shady "sponsorship" deal with a rich and influential businesslady who happened to be looking for a new act for her upscale jazz club. This businesslady (Gunilla is her name) is, unbeknowst to Ellinor, also the leader of an influential crime syndicate - the very same Pepe works for.

The deal is such that Gunilla provides Ellinor with all the monetary help she (supposedly) needs to advance her career, and Ellinor is to work off the debt through ticket sales for her shows in the aforementioned club. The help started as private classes and down-payments for venues, but quickly escalated into racks and racks of expensive design dresses, jewelry and moving to a royal suite in a luxury hotel. So even though Ellinor brings in a good amount of revenue via ticket sales, the debt doesn't go anywhere due to all the accumulating luxuries that get written as expenses, so she's pretty much stuck in her situation.

Ellinor completely understands the state of things, but from her perspective she's benefiting from the arrangement. She has also cultivated a good personal relationship with Gunilla, and often gets taken along as her "plus one" to formal business soirées and benefit nights. While their relationship is more professional than anything else, getting to go to fancy events on the arm of a sophisticated older lady counts as a hefty bonus for Ellinor.

All in all, Ellinor may be stuck in golden cage, but she herself is also one of the things holding the cage closed.

How did they meet

SO I'M NOT ACTUALLY SURE LMAO. Or like, we discussed it with my partner at some point way back when we came up with the setting, but that's kinda old by now and we haven't really gone through it again as we've continued to develop the setting, so the precise events have been left vague.

But the basic premise is, that even before they formally meet, Pepe knows of Ellinor because she is famous and because they both "work" for the same boss, while Ellinor of course doesn't know Pepe or that Gunilla has a whole entire apparatus of violence and crime up in her sleeve.

The way the two "branches" of the, uhh, Gunilla corp. is set up, is that the people on the extortion/murder/money laundering side aren't to come in contact with the people on the legal side of things, aside from a few trusted individuals. So Pepe, having the approximate value of a piece of lint, should basically avoid Ellinor like she's radioactive. But then of course she doesn't because she's stupid and they kinda hit it off in their own dysfunctional way, hijinks ensue. I'd want to examine their dynamic and reasons for why they do and don't get along in a comic format some day, so I won't go too deep into it.

...I don't know if this answered anything, but it has turned into such a wall of text that I thinks it's best to end the ramblings here. Thanks once again for asking, and especially if you read all the way through lol.

oh you're entirely welcome!

and I mean I'd say I don't understand why tumblr is so viscerally anit-vegan but actually I'm pretty sure it's totally isomorphic to how people on here react to someone saying their favorite tv show is #problematic by suicide baiting the critic. Just a critical mass of people who react to the smallest implication that they do not live morally unimpeachable lives with reflexive violence.

i'm hoping to paint all 3 beans, i already did a portrait of fava bean, adzuki bean will be done soonish hopefully. i referenced this image of him, i started this piece in november and he's gotten so much larger in the meantime! mung beans are legumes (in the family fabaceae), and all the plants in the background are legumes too. fabaceae is a very large and diverse family. starting from the top clockwise: umbrella thorn acacia (Vachellia tortilis) false indigo bush (Amorpha fruticosa) chaparral bird's-foot trefoil (Acmispon grandiflorus) white clover (Trifolium repens) sundial lupine (Lupinus perennis) redbud (Cercis glabra) the font is edda normal, it's so swoopy and beautiful. AURORA, a musician i like, used it for some of her recent promotional material and i was so happy to find out what font it was. this piece was art nouveau-inspired, especially the frame.

i mean. if you are asking a stranger for money, and there are known scammers doing the same thing using the same methods as you, the burden of proof is on you, and it's pretty high! and like...that will mean that some people wont have the means to get the money to get out of gaza, which is bad, but the alternative is crazy! there are places (like the UNRWA) you can donate to help people in palestine that are definitely not scams! you dont have to like...accept that there is an appreciable chance of donating to a scam! you have options!

when it was happening i only saw posts on the fundraiser-skeptical side of the palestine gofundme debacle here when it was still active but ive been backreading some other blogs on the fundraiser-nonskeptical side and uh. man. its very weird! i feel like i "get" people sending hatemail abt it on some level, "person who will use whatever excuse to harrass people" is an archetype i know. but person who is actively in favor of blatant scams (that direct money away from a cause you care about!) is very weird. i guess theyre just stupid?

4. Piece you wish got more love?

There's this short one-off comic of my characters that I posted some time earlier this year, that I would've wanted to see get a better reception at that time. People did like it, but it didn't really spark much feedback one way or the other, so the reaction felt very distant and lukewarm.

Nowadays I can see a lot of faults in the comic (one major being that the value balance is Not Good so it looks kinda mushy when laid out all together, which probably contributed to people's willingness to take a look) and I don't want it to get any more attention so not linking it here lmao.

24. Whats a compliment about your art that has always stuck with you?

I don't think it was meant as a compliment, but I've chosen to take it as such. Years ago someone saw me draw werewolves and said every character I draw always looks like they're choking on something. I think they were referring to drawing things with snarly teeth and tongue lolling out and I'm like, yeah it's a look that slaps, thanks for noticing.
