Conscious Consumerism

Conscious consumerism or ethical consumerism is the act of making considered purchasing decisions that one believes to “positive social, economic, and environmental impact”[AGoodCompany, 2023]. I believe that researching this topic is beneficial to me to build a stronger contextual knowledge as well as gathering potential information I could use within my campaign.

Why be a conscious consumer?

There are many benefits to being a conscious consumer,  overall having a more positive impact on the world. You can:

Reduce environmental footprint

Spread environmental message

Get better value for money from products

How can brands help?

Educate consumers on the impact of their purchasing decisions, as well as what they can do to improve them and become more sustainable

Companies have to be transparent, providing data about how products are being made.

How to become a more conscious consumer?

Reducing amount of purchases made

Consider the social and environmental impacts of products throughout their entire lifespan as a product, not just their creation.

Can you find a way to reuse/repurpose a product before resorting to recycling?

Looking into a vegan/vegetarian lifestyle, or at least moving closer towards this organic route

Using car share, public transport or commuting by cycling or walking to reduce dangerous emissions

Change energy supplier to a more renewable option

Don’t purchase single-use products

Buy Carbon offsets to help lower your carbon footprint

What else can be done?

Voting for political parties with good environmental views

Support businesses that are fighting for the rights of people

Join local groups and communities also fighting for change

This research has allowed me to build a broader contextual knowledge on this topic - which is the message I wanted to push within my deliverables. It has given me ideas towards what the content of my deliverables could be, but further this expanded understanding of this area will help strongly influence and dictate the creative decisions I make to present such a message.
