Second hand bedsheets - would you do it? These brushed cotton sheets were put up on marketplace after apparently only being used for 6 months because someone was leaving the country. I put them through two 90°c washes with double detergent and a bit of bleach and baking soda. Some people have a thing about #secondhand bedding, but in my mind it is just another fabric that can be cleaned and used. What do you think? While stocking up on ingredients on Saturday, I visited my local plant shop and found this Lupinus plant dying on the street, so I asked the owner if I could take it to try and save it. As soon as we got it home, it bloomed some beautiful violet petals, so I think it's happy about being saved! We also picked up a Coriander plant for our curry last night. This week let's look at DIOXIN - a common ingredient in sanitary pads, shampoos, soaps, deodorants, cream etc. Dioxin is highly toxic and causes many hormonal and digestive tract issues. New house, new (to us) sofa! Second hand furniture is a great way to reduce your impact on the environment. There is a huge amount of furniture in this world already, so if you can find something second hand it means fewer trees chopped, less plastic padding made, and less electricity and all the rest! RECYCLE: MORE THAN YOU THINK YOU CAN

46) Recycle properly! This may seem obvious but for roadside recycling (if your council/municipality provides it), stick to the guidelines of what can and can’t be recycled and how these should be recycled (e.g. sorting into glass, paper, tins, etc). 47) Check if it can be recycled before you chuck it: A surprising number of weird and wonderful things that you probably haven’t thought of can actually be recycled at specialised facilities.

48) Collect your food waste:  A simple collection bin on your kitchen counter will do (we use an old plastic container). That way you can collect food for your own composter, or, if you don’t compost, collect it for someone who does! 49) Composting for everyone: Ideally, you’ll get into composting yourself! You can even do it right in your own apartment, on your balcony (we have a balcony worm farm!) or even indoors, thanks to some very clever indoor compost bins on the market. 50) Use your rot to regrow: Use your compost to grow your very own little apartment garden. Compost is great for amending soil and providing nutrients to plants.  If you have a vermicomposter, you’ll find plants simply thrive with a little worm tea fertilizer. Had a busy weekend seeing friends - and making new ones - so I don't have a lot of content to share right now. A bigger post will be coming later, so watch this space! In the meantime, enjoy this photo of these surprisingly adorable meringues we made last night, with leftover egg white from a hollandaise sauce I made on Saturday. The hardest part was stopping myself from eating them as soon as they came out of the oven!! For a total of 12 meringues, you will need: 💫 The whites of 3 eggs 💫 150g sugar (we used granulated white sugar, but you can use caster sugar too) Equipment: 💫 Bowl big enough to whisk in 💫 An electric whisk 💫 Oven pre-heated to 140⁰C 💫 A baking tray covered in baking paper OR a muffin tray lined with 12 cupcake cases. Method: 1. Pre-heat oven to 140⁰C. 2. Pour egg whites into bowl, whisk until white, foamy, and creating stiff peaks when you remove the whisk. 3. While continuing to whisk the mixture (I use a slow, 8-formation), gently pour in 1 teaspoon of sugar at a time until it is all incorporated. Don't be tempted to rush this step, as you will beat out all the air that makes the meringues fluffy in the middle! 4. Using two tablespoons, separate the mixture into 12 cupcake cases. 5. Bake in the pre-heated oven for 1 hour.
