Turns out, promising to do ‘anything you want’ wasn’t something Konoha Akinori took lightly. Especially not when you add Bokuto Koutaro to the mix. Konoha was a sly opportunist, while Bokuto wasn’t embarrassed by anything, so it was a deadly combination.
You didn’t know why you let yourself be talked into making a stupid, silly bet with the two boys. Konoha had a talent to goad, and he managed to successfully goad you. So when you lost the bet (really, why did you think having a physical competition with two volleyball players was a good idea), it was like Konoha had his winning prize ready. The request fell from his lips like he had been practicing it for days.
Which he probably had. The menace.
So here you were, hands shaking violently as you put away water bottles and towels, cleaning up the club room and taking all the time in the world to change back into your uniform. The other managers had offered to wait for you so you could walk home together, but you encouraged them to go on, saying you had some stuff to organize before you left so it would take time. You didn’t need them to stick around to see you horrifically embarrass yourself when you confessed your silly crush and got rejected. Already Konoha was making all the boys stay behind to witness the moment. You couldn’t bear to have your closest friends see it too.
You locked the club room behind yourself before slowly and painfully making your way to the gym. You could hear the thuds of volleyballs and squeaks of shoes as the boys noisily cleaned up. They were talking and laughing amongst themselves, and you felt your nerves tighten even more. This was the worst possible place and time to confess. The chances of public humiliation were sky high. But Konoha had made his demands clear. And you weren’t one to go back on your word, no matter how dire the consequences.
You smoothed your skirt when you reached the gym doors, standing in the doorway and watching the scene before you. Despite the net slowly being lowered, Bokuto was still bounding towards it.
“Akaashi, go again!”
The boy in question was already in position, setting the ball high towards Bokuto, who spiked it hard over the half-up net. Washio was yelling at them to stop and it was enough for the day.
You watched Akaashi wipe the sweat off his forehead and kneel to tie his shoe, breathing slightly labored from the exertion. Your feet remained frozen, eyeing him silently and dreading how your relationship with him was about to change forever. While Akaashi wasn’t someone who harbored ill feelings, you weren’t sure how he was going to react to a love confession and subsequent rejection. What guarantee did you have that this wouldn’t affect your friendship going forward?
“Oi, look who’s here!” Konoha’s voice was filled with glee, and all eyes turned to look at you when he pointed at the door. You fought the urge to roll your eyes and deck him across the face. Violence was not the answer.
“Do you have something to say?”
Okay, maybe violence was the answer.
You gave him a large, fake grin, before nodding jerkily. You could feel the edge of your face and your ears turn burning hot, hands already going clammy as you tried to clench and unclench them.
“Akaashi-san, may I talk to you in private?”
Akaashi seemed surprised, blinking twice before nodding and standing up to walk towards you. No one else was caught off guard, of course, grinning faces looking between you two, knowing what was about to happen. You wished the ground would open up and swallow you whole so you wouldn’t have to do this in front of the entire volleyball team. But a bet was a bet. You had brought this upon yourself.
Whenever you had lain in bed and fantasized about confessing to Akaashi, you had pictured just you and him. Either outside the gym, or in the school grounds, nice cool air blowing through your clothes and hair. You had imagined how he would smile and return your feelings, which was a long shot but anything was possible in your imagination.
Akaashi was…. dignified. Organized. He was crazy smart, perceptive to a fault. It was almost impossible to not like him. Two years since you had started managing the Fukurodani team, and your crush on him had only grown. The more you learned about him, the more you liked him. And he was leagues above you in every sense.
That was the reason you had always believed Akaashi couldn’t return your feelings.
He stepped out behind you, following you only a few steps away from the gym doors. Konoha had explicitly said that you had to stay within earshot. A childish, immature request but part of the bet reward, so you couldn’t exactly refuse. You turned back to the boy, unable to meet his eyes and instead staring at your own hands as you fiddled with your fingers. You had rehearsed in your head over and over how you would take Akaashi’s rejection, what you would say, how would you tell him it wasn’t a big deal and you didn’t expect him to return your feelings. That you hoped you could still be friends. But now, standing before him, you realized you hadn’t really thought about the actual confession. You were completely blank.
“Is everything okay?” Akaashi’s voice was laced with concern, and he tilted his head a bit to catch your eye. You stared at him for a good minute before blinking and vigorously nodding.
“Yes! Completely fine. I’m fine.”
Embarrassment was already beginning to crawl up on you. There was a bout of silence. Behind Akaashi, you caught sight of multiple heads peeking through the window. You felt annoyance build up in you.
“Screw this,” you mumbled. “Akaashi-san, I like you. A lot. Not as a friend. And I was never going to tell you, but I lost a bet to Konoha and he thought this would be the perfect way to humiliate me. By making me confess. So….. here I am. I’m sorry for dragging you into this.”
Akaashi watched you unblinkingly for a few moments. You glanced at Konoha who was scowling, probably because you name dropped him. But that wasn’t one of his conditions, so you didn’t care. You felt a twinge of satisfaction at having bested him even in your current circumstance. Good. He deserved to feel even a fraction of the anxiety and embarrassment you were feeling right now.
“Why would that humiliate you?” Akaashi finally spoke.
Your eyes met his dark ones, and you felt yourself freeze. Of all the questions you thought he would ask, this was not one you were prepared for.
“Uh-” You tried to come up with an answer that didn’t sound equally as embarrassing as the confession. Because you will reject me and they will all witness it?
Akaashi sighed and toed at the ground a bit, mouth pursed in thought. You stared at him wide eyed, waiting for him to speak. To say something. Follow up on his unusual question.
“This isn’t exactly how I imagined this moment to go.” He muttered, and you wouldn’t have caught it if you weren’t already looking at him. Your breath hitched, eyes so wide you were sure they would pop out of your skull. You tried to process the sentence, tried to think of any reason he would say that without getting your hopes up.
Akaashi peered around, as if searching for something, looking left and right before he finally caught the floating heads behind him. There was a yelp as they disappeared from the window suddenly, followed by thudding and a curse. You bit back your laughter. Akaashi rolled his eyes.
“I would like to talk about this more. Where others can’t see us.” His voice was as calm and quiet as ever. You felt your heart race. Your limbs felt jittery. Did this mean….?
“Akaashi-san, do you-”
A smile that made your heart leap. “I do.”
You felt a smile stretch over your face, feeling giddy at the thought of something you had considered so impossible materializing in front of your very eyes. You could still hear faint bickering from the gym, and you were sure Konoha had not seen this coming. Somehow, he was the least of your concerns now, in the face of Akaashi’s quiet smile and the way he was leaning towards you. You leaned forward too, realizing you had never been this close to him before. You basked in the moment.
In ten million years you could not have wished for a better outcome.

The morning light filtered through the curtains, casting a gentle, golden glow that painted the room with warmth. You had intended to be the first one awake, hoping to surprise Akaashi with breakfast in bed or a quiet morning spent together. But as you stirred in your sleep, your eyes fluttered open to find Akaashi already awake, his gaze fixed on you.
His dark hair was slightly tousled, and his eyes held a softness that made your heart skip a beat. His fingers traced the delicate curve of your cheek, his touch so light it felt like a whisper. You watched him for a moment, his expression radiating tenderness that enveloped you with a sense of comfort and warmth.
"Good morning," you whispered, your voice barely louder than a sigh.
Akaashi's fingers stilled, his lips curling into a soft smile. "Good morning, my love," he responded, his voice is as soothing as a melody.
You shifted slightly, propping yourself up on your elbow to better meet his gaze. His hand retreated, his ocean-like eyes locking onto yours with an intensity that tinted your cheeks with a rosy hue.
"I didn't mean to wake you," he said, his voice filled with a mix of apology and amusement.
You shook your head, your fingers reaching out to brush a strand of hair away from his forehead. "It's okay. I wanted to be the first one awake, but it seems you beat me to it."
Akaashi's smile widened, and he leaned in to press a soft kiss against your forehead. "I couldn't help but admire your features," he admitted, his tone honest and affectionate.
Your heart swelled at his words, a sensation of warmth spreading from the top of your head to the tips of your toes. His gaze held a level of adoration that made you feel truly seen, truly cherished.
"I hope you like what you see," you teased playfully, your own fingers tracing a path along his jawline, eliciting a sense of comfort from your touch.
Akaashi's gaze grew even softer, his hand entwining with yours as his forehead came to rest against yours. "I do more than like it," he said, his tone sincere. "I love every part of you."
Your breath caught at his confession, your heart echoing with a rhythm that mirrored the fluttering of butterflies in your stomach. In that fleeting moment, bathed in the morning's tender light and held within Akaashi's adoring gaze, you felt an intimate connection that transcended words.
"Thank you," you murmured, your voice laced with emotion. "For being here, for waking up before me, for everything."
Akaashi's thumb carresed the back of your hand, a gesture of reassurance. "It's my pleasure," he replied. "And I'm grateful for every moment I get to spend with you."
The mutual gaze remained unbroken, as if the outside world had faded into insignificance. It was just the two of you, sharing a quiet moment filled with unspoken feelings. And in that moment, you realized that sometimes the most profound connections were made in the simplest of moments—early mornings when conversations were replaced by heartfelt gazes and tender touches.

"How would you want our first kiss?"
You never whipped your head that fast all your life, it felt like it was gonna rip out of your neck. He was copying the notes he missed out of your classmates' but his face was beet red beside you, sweat beading at the side of his face eventhough the room's airconditioned. Your look was incredulous, and you started laughing so hard you knocked off your pens due to your fist hitting hard your desk.
He scowled, "Nevermind."
"W-wait," and you continued laughing.
His scowl deepened and he side-eyed you and went back to writing. Classmates were looking already to the sound of your laugh, others were already infected and started snorting and giggling on their seats.
Your laugh curbed to a breathy laugh to a giggle and you scooch over to him more and whispered, "D'you want to kiss me?"
He continued copying, huffing as he goes and done, closing his notes and turning his face to you. You felt his minty breath from the energy bar he had for snacks.
"Of course." whispering back, holding your eye contact for a few seconds and his gaze went down to your lips and you felt like you can't breathe when his gaze came back to your eyes. You swallowed hard.
There was never a time when you won't feel like your heart will skip a beat when you interact with Akaashi Keiji, but on times like this, it doesn't. Instead, it gives your heart an extra beat and a thousand monsters would go wild in your gut, you wanna run away screaming his name until your chords give up. You wonder if he knows that. You wonder if he feels that.
"But not here. Inappropriate." You snorted and sat properly, shoulders brushing his as he, too, leaned back, resting his head and back from a 30-minute write.
"Hmmm," you hummed, lifting your chin up, thinking about his question. How would you like your first kiss? Well, this is not your first kiss. You had your first kiss stolen during middle school at a school festival. Not to worry, Keiji knows it already.
You bit your lip when you realized that if your fantasies happen, fantasies you're about to spill to him now to answer his question, it'll be your first kiss that you both mutually wanted. And not just a stolen one, but a real one. You can't hide your smile and he looked at you, a brow raised and silently smirking.
"Maybe I want it raw."
"What!?" It was his turn to whip his head hard and fast and look at you like you had popped out of thin air. "R-raw?" He stuttered and you narrowed your eyes on him.
You started hitting his shoulder and arm as you processed what he would have been thinking about what raw is. "You! 18 year old man! Captain of the volleyball team! Stop thinking about those kind of things!!" A series of Ows were heard across the room, he has to back away to avoid your heavy hand.
He is laughing through his flinches and it fumed you more. "Stop it, Y/n." He giggled as he grabs both of your wrist. "I'm just kidding. Just kidding." Keiji guided you back to your seat and made his seat again next to you. "Soー" He cleared his throat. "ーraw? Explain." He fought with all his might not to laugh at your still-scrunched-up expression.
"Stop laughing, okay?" He covered his mouth as he nods, resting his elbow at his desk, body turned to you, giving you his full attention as always.
"I want it unplanned. But I, you know, I would especially like it when it happens in a baseball fieldーcoz you know I'm a baseball playerーand I want it raining, and my favorite song comes along and you'll dance with me in the rain then ー" You pouted as you realized you're dreamily staring at nothing as you imagined it happening. And a man not more than a foot away from you is also doing the same thing, while staring at the most precious thing in his life right now.
Keiji never planned on courting you. Nor falling hard for you and your personality. It just happened, one winter morning after the last game of his high school life. When you uncharacteristically praised his gameー that you usually made fun of, of how he is overthinking things and it seeps through in his gameplay. It started as a super confused "Huh?" and ended in a blunt, "Do you want to be my girlfriend, Y/n?", yet you laughed and you said, "Express delivery, Mr. Akaashi? Court me first, HA!"
But you did fold after two months of his rather sweet advances, and now, you're both here, in this topic he also didn't planned. He stared at you one last time as he thinks of ways of how to step up to your fantasies.
Wataru nudges Keiji as they walked together to the school's gym for the athlete's formal turnover of responsibilities. The night's lingering winter cold air wafting his face and against his black dress shirt and slacks. He probably should wait for you inside.
"Where's Y/n-san?" Keiji could feel his scowl when he heard him asking about his girlfriend. Wataru may have seen Keiji's face and backtracked. "Just asking. The event's gonna start in 30 minutes."
Keiji hates the fact that he still can't drive, or his dad can't trust him drive. He can't pick you up in times like this. He's getting anxious and most of the athletes of Fukurodani Academy are already seated inside. He huffs, small misty breath leaving his mouth. He thought of why is it still even cold when it's already spring. He thought of the drastic effect of the greenhouse gases and climate change and abnormal change in the seasons andー
"Hey." He nearly jumped with his heart out when you spoke next to him. You giggled and it's like sleigh bells chiming against his ears. His erratic thoughts leaving him, now filling it up with thoughts of you, not that you ever left his mind.
"You're stunning."
"Oh, stop it, you." You smiled while your hair's softly blown by the Tokyo spring air. Keiji can't help but to commit this image of you in his memory for the years to come.
You kissed his cheek and anchored your hand to his arm. "You look like the man that I somehow see my future with."
You giggled as his other hand found its way to brush your anchored hand, his hand too warm to the touch. "You like that?"
He hummed. "I like that." Though, you both are still in your early months of your relationship, he liked the sound of it. So much.
The event ended an hour ago and you both found yourselves sprawled in the field, clearly unplanned. You invited him after a very toxic program like, why would they hold such event when the teams can do it on their own, and it will be shown anyway in public in the next pep rally. And the program was a mess, not organized. Too obvious it was just a spur of the moment talk, considering they hastily informed the athletes three days before the event.
You rolled your eyes and snuggled to Keiji's chest for comfort. He has his hand gently caressing your hair. You were whining about boredom back at the gym and he has heard the end of it when you both found comfort on the freshly trimmed field, your favorite song on repeat muffled in his slacks where your phone is.
"I just hope no bugs would dare crawl on us right now. I would really grab a missile on them." You grumbled through his chest, his red necktie and upper buttons now loosened. And you felt it, how his chest heaves as he heartily laughs. He hugged an arm around you and kissed your hair.
Your heart swells a little more than when you agreed to be Keiji's girlfriend. These wholesome moments with him are like what you were waiting for your whole life. You would like to be buried with them forever.
And you wanted to kiss him, right at this moment. Fuck your fantasies.
You plopped yourself up while staring him down. He was staring right back at you, and you felt like melting when he tightened his grip on your waist as you motioned closer. You're already an inch away, feeling his hot breath on your face, when the unthinkable happened.
You first felt it in your leg, then at the back of your hand, in his chest, in your arm, his forehead and the heavy drops came pouring.
You were both dumbfounded. And laughed, you crashing at his neck.
"Shall weー" Keiji ran his hand down his face to get rid of the wetness of the rain. "ーShall we take this chance to dance to your favorite song, love?"
Love.
Love?
Your brain stuttered while he heaved himself up on his feet. Heーhe called you an endearment, oh my God. You blinked rapidly through the raindrops on your face and with furrowed brows you turned to him.
"HEY!" He flashed a grin and offered a hand to you. "You can't say it like that so...casually!"
You took his hand and he hoisted you up chuckling, "Why not.. love?"
"Keiji!!" You whined as he placed his hand on your waist, still chuckling, other hand outstretched with your hand. You instinctively placed your other hand on his shoulder, brushing his neck as he swing to the rhythm of your song.
"You planned this, did you?" Your scrutinizing eyes were boring on his innocent but sparkling eyes.
"I can't make it rain, love. But you want it raw right? Unplanned?" He still grinned through the rain and you can't deny that you like what you're seeing right now. He looks so divine, you can't stop yourself from leaning on his shoulder, at the crook of his neck while both his hands are now on your waist, your other hand brushing on his shoulder and still swaying to the rhythm of your song and the pouring heavens.
Keiji never thought it would rain. He might have to thank the climate change for that. He never thought this circumstance would present itself now. He can't help but to kiss your head a little bit more tender than usual. You might've felt how his heart beats so erratic now that you're this close to him.
"I love you, Keiji." Oh how do you do that. How do you do those things that makes him crazier and crazier by the second.
He felt his steps paused, his heartbeat in his throat and ears as he held the back of your neck, craning it up to him.
And then it happened.
It felt like the world paused for this moment, the raindrops stopped, the traffic far out the walls of the school, the distant disco songs in the gym. It all stopped. What remained was that moment.
His eyes were closed unlike your eyes all wide from the shock. He pulled you closer by the waist, his hand at the back of your neck prevented you from pulling away from him. And his breath against your face. So close. And your lips... You blushed so hard at the realization. Andーand then he nibbled your bottom lip. You closed your eyes and your hands flew to the back of his neck and his hair. And you kissed him back with the same intensity he's giving you.
God, Keiji. What are you doing to me?
You felt him smile before breaking the mindblowing kiss and he leaned his forehead against yours, catching his breath. You were, too, smiling.
"Is that how you say you love me too, Keiji?" He laughed. Oh, how you love the sound of his laughs.
He kissed your nose and forehead, next. And he left you on the spot, still laughing. It's when you realized something. You scrunched your nose up instantly.
"HEY!" His laughs went louder. "You didn't say it back!" You ran to catch up to his big strides.
Keiji can't say it back. Not when you're this adorable in front of him. Not when his head is over the clouds at the moment. Not when he's still too drunk with your lips.
He might kiss you again. And he's afraid he might not stop 'til he takes your breath away, unconscious.
How he loved the way that kiss went. He laughed upon himself and his realizations, a finger ran on his lips.
But something went wrong with you.
"Yes, okay.ー" You looked at him pacing back and forth, packing up for a trip you did know but can't fathom why you can't go with. "Yes. On my way, Ran. Hm. See you. Yes. Love you too." And he hanged up and looked at you, kissed you and went back to packing.
"I wanna go with you, Keijiiii. Don't leave me hereee." You whined, rolling about your shared bed.
"You can't, love. It's too far, and you have classes on weekends. I'll be dead if your mom finds out you'd be skipping classes for a vacation halfway across the country." You pouted more and he kissed you again. "We'll have more next week, hm?"
You glared at his back as he continued packing.
But that next week never came. More projects, hectic deadlines, demanding reports, from both you and his. College life is stressful. You just wanted to quit and ran away with him. But you know he can't.
It went on for months and school was pressuring you more. Keiji came busy too, too busy for dates now. Study dates, maybe. But just the indulgent ones? You plopped at your chair and heaved a sigh.
And it came buzzing and buzzing. You took a look at his phone on his side of the desk.
"Keiji, your phone's noisy. Shall I check it?" You called him out while still peeking at his phone, still hands off.
"Yes, please, love! Coming over in a minute!" He called back from the bathroom, still showering.
You excitedly unlocked his phone with your anniversary date and took a look at his chats. Your brows shot up at the topic on the GC.

You closed the chat, pale and incoherent thoughts were running on your mind. Your mind's blurry, so as your eyes. You tried to transfer to the bed but your legs were wobbly as hell. Your breath's getting heavy, it's already hitching.
And the bathroom door clicked open. Keiji, on his sweatpants already, was initially running his towel through his wet hair when he got to look at you. He rushed and kneeled next to you so fast. You felt so betrayed.
"What happened, love? Why are youー"
Keiji had no time to process the stinging slap you gave him when you grabbed your wallet, walked out the door and from your shared apartment. He rushed, taking whatever shirt he got first in his closet and ran after you.
But he didn't caught up to you.
Keiji ran back to the apartment, straight to your shared room, and grabbed his phone to call you. After a few tries, you finally picked up.
"I'm breaking up with you." Your voice was already shaky and hitching as you sobbed hard.
"Why? What happened? Let's talk about this. Please come back love, Y/n." Keiji knew the places where are you could possibly be heading to, so he grabbed his wallet and went out again to take a cab.
"Y-you know what happened to my past relationship. You know what happened butーh-how could you.. Did you even love me, Keiji?" Your mind was spiraling at the thoughts of that 2-month relationship before Keiji's. You closed your eyes at the bitter memory that's now reliving in Keiji's time.
"I didn't cheat, love. What are you talking about? Please. Come bーY/n? Love?" Keiji bit his lip when you hanged up on him. He called you many times after, but it just went straight to voicemail.
Please. Please. This is not happening.
Keiji's last resortーyour family's house. As much as possible, he's not gonna go in to respect your father's wishes but, he's sure you're inside those walls. He didn't waste a second more before he rang the doorbell. A minute passed and your father greeted him by the gate. He swallowed hard.
Keiji was sure your father's seeing his unflattering self right now outside his gate. Keiji was sure he'll not bat an eye more than a minute and he'll close the gate to his face. But he's practically begging the heavens right now.
"Sir. Y/n's inside. Please, can I talk to her?"
"No." It was plain but rigid. Keiji could feel a boulder weighing down on his chest.
"Please, sir. I love her. I wanna fix it."
"You love her?" Your father scoffed. "Then why did she came home crying to her mother's arms?"
"I'm sure this is just a misー"
"You told me you wouldn't make her cry, Akaashi. Whatever the reason is, you told me you wouldn't make her cry. Just out of joy. Now, what did you do to her?" Keiji felt his tears welling up his eyes. He swallowed harder.
"IーI don't know sir. I honestly don't know. She told me I cheated on her." He answered your father truthfully because he can't think of any at the moment. He just want to talk to you.
"And, did you?" Keiji looked at your father's eyes, ignoring the tears that fell to his cold cheeks.
"No. I didn't. Never. I wouldn't cheat on someone I plan to marry in the future, sir."
Keiji took hold of your father's scrutinizing stare and broke off, huffing. "Go home, Akaashi. Her brother's mad and coming home. I don't want both of you to see each other now."
And Keiji did what he was ready to do. He might've reserved this when he'll be asking for your hand in marriage but the circumstances took him here, right now. He went down on his knees and grovel in front of your father. Your father just stood there, staring at your boyfriend's grovelling.
"Please sir. Let me talk to her." Your father sighed and closed the gate in front of Keiji. "Please sir. Please."
He closed his tear-filled eyes and cried against his arms, across the ground, muttering Please sirs and let me talk to her over and over. You can hear his crying pleas from your room, and you cried with him.
Keiji hadn't realized how he got back to your shared apartment. All he knew was his face hurts, his knees hurt, his arms hurt and his heart hurts. But you're hurting more, he thought. He can't think of reasons why would you think he cheated on you. He never did anything unfaithful in your back. His life is literally devoted to you and your well being. Heー
Wait.
His brows furrowed as he started picking up the pieces before that slap happened. He plopped to the couch and started backreading on the GC. The boys were in panic because of something. Then he saw it. But what video? Yuuji? He initiated a conference call and put it on speaker. He can't trust his voice right now, his arm hurts, but he has to know.
The boys started picking up the call.
Atsumu: "It was Yuuji! I swear I didn't do anything!!"
Osamu: "You were the root of it!!"
A flood of yeahs sounded through the call. He still can't find the strength to talk as he draped an arm against his eyes.
Wakatoshi: "Let the man speak first."
Kenji: "He's not even speaking."
Shoyo: "Keiji-san?"
Hajime: "Keiji? What happened?"
Shigeru: "This is your fault, Terushima Yuuji!!"
And a chaos was in the call again. Keiji's breath hitched. He didn't realize he was already crying again. What did these boys do to make you leave him like that?
Tadashi: "STOP TALKING."
Kei: "Akaashi-san."
Tetsurou: "Akaashi."
"Wーwhat happened?" His voice was hitching. He groaned as he realized it.
Akinori: "Y/n really saw it, Yuuji! You motherfucker!"
Shinsuke: "Speak up, Terushima Yuuji."
Yuuji: "I'm sorry, Keiji."
He felt his throat constricting at the sound of Yuuji's voice and he began sobbing so hard.
What.."did you do? What".. did.."she see?"
He tried to talk but that's all the sentences he could form. He's pathetic without you.
Yuuji: "Shallーshall I send it again for you to see?"
Morisuke: "Send it again."
Taketora: "That's all you're good at!"
Eita: "Bury him in the sand again, Yuu!"
Yuu: "Tsk."
Daichi: "Stop. Send it again, Yuuji. Keiji's waiting."
A video was sent on the groupchat. He saw himself on the thumbnail and he knew instantly what the video was about. But why? Did he misremember something to make you think he cheated on you? Did he say something he can't remember saying to make you think of that? He found his shaking thumb pressing the play button.
The video shakes through the voices of Atsumu, Rintaro and Yuuji. It was blurry at first and then it finally focused on Keiji's drunk figure.
"C'mon Keiji. Out of all of us, you're the closest one to her. Well, except for her team and her boyfriend." That was Atsumu, out of the frame.
He heard himself groan at the prior question. "Okay. Okay." He breathes and stares up the sky. "I HAD been inlove with her since I saw her in that bloody training camp. Who wouldn't be? She's cute and amazingー" hik "ーshe's fucking beautiful."
He heard Yuuji giggled. "Right? Tell me about it."
"And d'you all see her sets?" Keiji hugged himself. He remembered it was out of bliss, alcohol and the cold air blowing in Okinawa. "I'm inlove with those."
The trio out of the frame chuckled at him and he grabbed Rintaro into the frame. "Butーbutー"
And the video stopped there.
"Why did it stopped there, Yuuji?"
Keiji remembers what he said there. Keiji remembers. But why did it stop?
Yuuji: "Iー"
Atsumu: "See? That was what we were asking!"
Rintaro: "There was another video of it. You haven't sent it. You were too focused on messing with Keiji and his drunken state."
Yuuji: "C'mon."
Sou: "We kinda want to see the second part?"
Atsumu: "And save it. Send it to Y/n."
But Keiji's anger was boiling within him. He doesn't know why did it stopped there. Yuuji can't be fucking serious.
"Terushima-san. I'm asking you a question, you better answer it."
The conference call went silent at his cold monotone voice. Some even squeaked to silence and murmurs.
Yuuji: "My hand slipped, okay? There was another video butーy-yeah, I wanna mess with you so Iーkindaーjust sent the first half. It was kinda my intention because I want to let them know your feelings for Ran before. Before. Yes, before Y/n. It was my fault, I'm sorry."
"Do you know what happened to us? Do you know what happened after she saw thatー" His tongue tastes bitter in his words. He has to force it out. "ーthat video? Do you know what her father told me? HUH!? DO YOU FUCKING KNOW WHAT DID I FUCKING DO JUST TO HAVE A FUCKING CHANCE TO FUCKING TALK TO HER!?"
Keiji felt himself stood up from the couch. "SHE WAS CRYING LIKE HELL, TERUSHIMA! SHE BROKE UP WITH ME! SHE THINKS I'M FUCKING CHEATING ON HER! Did you even know that's her relationship trauma from her previous one? ANSWER ME!!"
"Answer him, Terushima Yuuji. I'm waiting."
The angels may have graced the call because of the utter dead silence that followed her voice, except for Tadashi's and Kei's.
Tadashi: "Why didn't you knock?"
A series of fucks and Nos and Rans flooded the call. And Keiji found his tears streaming again. From the heartbreak, from the anger and the tension.. and now from the embarassment. He rubbed his hands on his face and plopped back to the couch, his anger fading.
Yuuji: "Cーc'mon, it's not just m-me!"
Ran: "Answer him. Fix it."
Kei: "Okay, that's enough for us. Excuse me and Tadashi."
Ran: "H-hey!"
Tadashi: "You shouldn't even be eavesdropping. That's boys' talk. You have your girlー"
And their line cutted off.
Yuuji: "I'm so dead."
Atsumu: "Glad w-we're at Hyogo right now. Right, Rin?"
Osamu: "Yeah? You're glad? She can even kick your butt even from Mars, you idiot!"
Rintaro: "Dumb ass. She's gonnaー"
Keiji don't wanna hear the end of it. He had enough. He just wanna hear your voice right now, to maybe soothe everything in him. He dialed your number countless times but to voicemail he was redirected.
He felt like dying.
You haven't been yourself lately. It's obvious you're still shaken by that cursed video Yuuji shared to the GC. The day you went home was a nightmare. You still could hear Keiji's cries off your gate, and how your brother punched your boyfriend's face numerous times you had to keep yourself from defending him. Your father isn't even talking to you, just sighs of disappointment.
Your important things for school is sitting right by your desk in your room, some clothes were still at that shared apartment you missed right now. Your shared apartment. The one both of you took time to pick, the kitchen you both decorated with lots of necessities, where he often kisses your shoulder when you try to cook, or you hugging him from his back when he tries to cook for you. The fridge full of ice creams and frozen pizzas for movie nights. And the counter whereーYou gulped hard. That's just the kitchen. And you had to stop, minding the toll it has given you.
You're not going to go back there. It's scary. He'll hurt you again. He doesn't love you. He loves someone else. He never loved you. He cheated on you.
That's all you have been in mantra for the whole month.
You took a deep breath and walked out of your class as soon as it ended. It was a morning of late November and the pending winter's coming. But winter came a month early for you. You fluttered your eyes close, pausing a little while on the lobby of your building.
"Where's her fucking building, Kenma!?"
"Ranー"
Your eyes immediately focused on the familiar golden-haired girl that's yelling on a distraught Kenma. He was the first one who spotted you, followed by Kei, then Tadashi, the cursed Yuuji with ears and cheek all red and clearly manhandled.. and she whirled to face your direction. Her golden eyes turned stormy as she pounced on you and slapped you hard, and again on the other cheek.
"Ran!"
You froze as your head is still tilted to the direction where she slapped you. The searing pain coursing through your head. Yells and grunts were all over you and you feel like crying for Keiji's name.
"Why did you do that!? Why did you slap her!?"
"I slapped you extra in case the first one didn't woke you up!"
Your breath hitched and your eyes travelled to her. She was already held back by her waist by Tadashi, Kei yelling at her and Yuuji, giving you an apologetic stare, keeping a scaredy arm-distance from Ran. Kenma went to your side and checked your cheek.
"I knew I'll be hating you sooner or later, then now, wow, you didn't disappoint Y/n! More disappointed at how you turned my comical hate to something more hellish!" You can't process what's she's saying, does she makes sense now? No. You can't understand why she's here or why she slapped you.
"Ran, that's enough!"
"You even haven't heard Keiji explain his side! How foolish can you be, huh!? You're traumatized of your past relationship? Can't you see how Keiji loves you with all his heart!?" She struggled against Tadashi's arms, you fluttered your eyes close.
You wished she'll break free and slap you again.
"It's disgusting to see Keiji smiling and laughing around you but looks so stoic infront of us! Can't you see that!? Open your fucking eyes, Y/n! You think he doesn't love you!? I'm gonna skin you alive and he'll still fucking love you, youー"
"Calm down, Ran." That was one demanding tone Tadashi gave to her, to which she stopped abruptly and breathed heavy. You have to close your eyes to try not to remember what Keiji told you about her.
Yuuji took small steps to you, wary about Ran's distance from him. "Y/n, I'm sorry. I will explain for Keiji. Though I can't say it in words, can you please look at this video? It's a continuation of the prior video which youーy'know."
He handed you his phone shakily, Kenma got it, noticing you were shaking so hard as well. He eyed you first before pressing play. Your eyes were glued at the familiar figure of Keiji, now with Rin in the frame.
"ーy'know. That all changed since I met my wife. The love of my life." He kissed Rin's cheek, to which the latter disgustingly turned away, but Keiji was hugging him tight. Laughs from Atsumu and Yuuji were off the frame.
"She changed me. Ran is..ugly..now to my eyes. She can't compare to my wifeー" hik "ーI'll marry her one day. Have kids that looks like her. I really don't mind not having boys." He dreamily sighed and leaned at Rin's shoulder that's pushing him away.
"Then don't wear a condom when you fuck her!"
"We didn't do it yet, Chumu. I respect her father as much as I respect her."
"Fuck, you're whipped." The screen wobbled and it turned black.
You didn't noticed you were crying until Ran, still at Tadashi's arms, screeched to Kei, "He called me ugly, Kei!"
"Yeah, you're realizing that now?" Kei smirked at his twin. "Ugly."
Your eyes were on Kenma. "Why didn'tー"
"She's uglier Kei!"
"You deactivated. You avoided us for a month, Y/n. Your father repeatedly turned Keiji's pleas down on talking to you. How would you know? You even blocked our numbers from your phone. There was one time we had to stop Keiji from climbing up your fence. He's 18 and can be arrested already. And your nasty of a brother giving him threats of suing him."
"No, you are."
"Then, you're ugly too. We're twins."
"Stop it, both of you."
"Keiji hasn't been in most of his classes. His father can't do anything to keep him moving. Eyebags around his eyes from lack of sleep. He's dying without you by his side, Y/n."
Kenma was so sullen on recounting those words to you. You knew you were selfish. After seeing that video, you knew you've made a terrible mistake, to the love of your life. How can you be so foolish? Ran's right. And you deserve her slaps.
You wanted to see Keiji now.
"We somehow got his face fixed, got him out of the apartment because of an emergency. We're going to Nagano inー" He took a look at his phone. "ーless than an hour. D'you wanna go? They're at the station now, waiting for me and Yuuji."
You heard Ran scoffed at Yuuji that's standing behind you shakily.
"I wanna go see him. Can we go now?"
You found your way to the Ueno Station with Kei and Ran still bickering at the back, on your either side was Kenma and Yuuji, and Tadashi up front, clearly done with the twins.
Your heart was racing when you all entered the station and walked a little bit more to the platform for the Nagano train. Mori spotted your crowd and nudged Akinori on his side and jutted his chin on your direction. Akinori immediately pointed to the far end of the platform, and there you saw him, standing alone, head low.
Tetsurou was nearby, but when he spotted you, his eyes widen and immediately distanced himself, walking to Ran's direction.
"Is the spot on your side taken, Mr. Akaashi?" You were at his back, and you saw how he froze and you can almost hear his relieved sigh and shaky breaths.
"Yes. I'm waiting for my love that's jealous and jumping to bad conclusions, making me wait for her alone in our bed." You pouted hard.
"If she's not you, please walk away. I don't want her to be jealous and think I'm cheating. I feel like dying without her already." His voice was hoarse to your ears. Is heー
You rounded to his front fast and hugged his limp figure. You noticed how his figure became noticeably thinner than usual. You cupped his cheeks and your heart dropped at his tear-filled eyes.
"Keiji."
"I was scared. So scared, Y/n." You tearfully nodded and hugged him again. "I thought I'm gonna lose you forever." You nuzzled your face to his neck and your other hand patted his cheek. You can feel how his breath hitched and deep, you think he might sob at any second.
"I'm here now. I'm here. I'm so sorry love." You kissed his neck, his jaw and his cheek and you stared at his eyes, wiping his tears off his cheeks and lashes.
"I love you Keiji."
And you closed the gap. It was not like the first time, but it was more meaningful now. The first time was out of bliss, now it's full of commitment and faith. If the first time was your fantasy, this one was your reality. If the first one was full of butterflies and rainbows, this one was through the storms you're willing to walk with Keiji.
"I love you more, Y/n. God, I love you more." He hugged you so tight and kissed you more passionately than ever. You tried to ignore it the first time but you could hear cheers not so far from your scene.
"Hey! Why are you crying!?"
"Shut up! God, I hate her!"
"You can come with us."
"No. She won't."
"Killjoy, Kei."
Keiji's brows furrowed, broke the kiss and stared at you.
"Why's your cheek so red, love?" He motioned to lay a finger on your cheek and you flinched to his touch. His eyes widened. His thoughts were bunching up to a conclusion and whirled to Ran's direction. You have to grab his arm to prevent him from anything else.
"Did you slap her!?" He growled at Ran, audience were too stunned to speak.
"Can you see it now, Y/n?" You can't help but smile at her, welp, through the lingering pain on your cheeks.
"Answer me, Tsukishima Ran!" You tightened your grip on Keiji's arm as he threatened to move closer to the now chuckling Ran.
"If I hadn't done that, she wouldn't be here smooching with you, fucking traitor!"
"I'm gonna punch him hard if he's not under the rubbles!"
"Don't you dare, Akaashi Keiji! I'm gonna skin her alive in front of you!"
"Ugh. Shut up. So embarassing."
You chuckled at the banter and can't help but hug Keiji from his back. You can't believe you doubted his love for you, his love that knows no bounds. From that peeking high school boy glances, to the fight between your dad and brother, even to this moment, he loves you with all his heart. And you've been fucking blind to how his love ranges, from the fantasy-filled moments to the real-to-the-bone ones.
"Don't let her slap you again, okay?" His hands rubbing your arms that's around him. You hummed and hugged him tighter. "D'you want to go to Nagano with me?"
You shook your head against his back. "I trust you. And I'm gonna go back to the apartment. I have a horrified image of it in my head."
He laughed, and that's the favorite music you have on your mind right now.
You're devouring the slice of cake in front of you when the detestful bride took notice of your table. You gripped your fork tighter and sliced the cake to smaller portions harder.
"Oh, how do you like the cake, Y/n?"
You scrunched your nose up and glared at her, taking a forkful of her wedding cake in front of her.
"Tastes bland, d'you spit on this?"
You saw how her smile dropped and nose already scrunched, too. Keiji and her groom sighing on both your sides.
"Be careful on your seat, I planted a bomb under it so you can go off together with the fireworks later."
"Oh, that's nice. So I can ruin your wedding too. Thank you, Ran. You're such a thoughtful friend. It's a pleasure."
"Ugh. I hate her, Keiji!"
"And I hate you, too!"
You both growled at each other til her father whispered something to her. She rolled her eyes on you, walking away with her groom's apologetic smile.
"Why do we hate her, Ran?"
"Don't you dare hate her."
"Shall I get you more cake, love?" Keiji was too poor on hiding his chuckles, you pouted at him.
You motioned him to move closer to you and he obliged. "Can you please check under my chair? That damn bride's sometimes serious."
And he dropped his head on your shoulder and laughed loud enough for the nearby tables to turn to your direction.
At a distance, Ran shrieked Keiji's name, to which you laughed heartily too.
You continuously tugged Keiji's sleeve as you saw your celebrity crush finished singing at the small pavillion just off the couple's platform. Keiji's still talking with his volleyball friends and you're already pouting so hard as Semi already walked past by your seat.
"What is it, love?"
"Semi!!" You whispered your shriek in his ear and he chuckled.
"Yes, yes, hold on."
He guided you to Semi and you can't help but to shake Keiji's arm violently as you neared their table. Keiji cleared his throat.
"Semi-san."
"Hm?" Semi stood, towering over you. "Keiji." He hugged your boyfriend with one arm. "How're you? And yourー" Your eye twitched at his giggles, rather than squealing in your mind. "ーgirlfriend?"
"We're fine. We're fine. This is Y/n. I haven't introduced you both formally."
"Nice to meet you, Y/n. I'm Semi Eita." He shook your cold hand, fangirling back on.
"She's curious about if you wanted a girl vocalist? Maybe she can join your band?" Both you and Semi stuttered a shocked face at Keiji. You felt your jaw dropped, cheeks blushing by his sudden reveal.
"Keiji!"
"What?"
"My dad wants me to be a doctor to be fitted to your family."
"And I'm too touched, but you also mentioned you wanted to be with Semi's band, right? Then, go do the things you love when you still have the chance."
Oh my God. You wanna kiss him right now.
"Hey! No cheesy scene in front of me. How dare you both." You found yourself chuckling with Keiji at Semi's retorts, with the others listening too.
"She can start now, actually. We really need a girl vocalist. I'll talk to the management about her." Your eyes bulged and you squealed. Semi's the singer of your favorite song and this is really really a dream come true.
"Really!? Oh my God." Your hand found its way to your mouth and Keiji was laughing at your actions, too fond of your reactions.
"Yeah. I shall eat first, and I'm gonna swing by you later at your table. Hm?"
"Oh my God. Thank you Semi!" You bowed numerous times and fast to Semi's direction through his laughs and a pat to your shoulder. Keiji dragged you away from Semi to stop you from your bowing. "Oh my God, Keiji."
"Oh my God, Y/n." He chuckled and kissed your forehead. "Do your best."
And Keiji was really touched about how your father wanted you to become a doctor for his family. But he knows you well, you don't want it. Or maybe you do, because you wanna be perfect for him. His heart was swelling and butterfliers churns his stomach as he listens you sing with Semi.
Whatever you wanna do, he is here waiting and supporting you. And oh, with the ring now burning in his slacks. There's a time for it. And he wants to elicit your best reaction yet to carve in his mind forever.

Hitoka Yachi was a liar. She was a thief. She was a con artist. And she could not tell you how she got to this point in her life.
And there she sat in the living room of an affluent old lady who knew nothing about the telephone package Yachi was trying to sell to her.
That’s what made her the perfect target, an ideal victim to scam out of a few hundred bucks. Just like the others in this neighborhood Yachi had already meticulously gone after.
“Let me make it simple for you,” Yachi told her, putting on her best and brightest smile, “You can give me a down payment now - of eight hundred dollars - and when our team comes for the installment, you can make your decision then. We can deduct any extra payment from next month’s bill.”
The woman took a deep breath and used the pause for thought to adjust her shawl on her shoulder. “Well…”
“And this is the last day for this offer! Remember, this is a huge holiday discount. Even if you wait until tomorrow - it would be triple the price!”
It wasn’t a holiday or anywhere near.
“I probably shouldn’t pass this up, then…”
The woman reached for her large purse and Yachi shot out of her seat in excitement, raring to snatch the payment from her.
“Thank you! We’ll be in contact about the installation day! Thank you!”
With the money in her hands she darted out the door, leaving behind every pamphlet and example photo she had brought with her. All she cared about was getting outside so she could do her happy dance in private.
What she was doing wasn’t wrong. These people already have enough money to afford their nice homes and retirement dreams. Yachi was simply taking advantage, and she was doing it to survive.
She started walking in a random direction and stopped at the first restaurant she came to. She stuffed her hand deep in her pocket to tuck her money inside - first, she pulled out a sliver of paper. Written on it was the name and phone number for the woman she just had a meeting with.
As she walked inside, she wadded the note up and threw it toward a trash can nearby.  It bounced off the edge and landed on the ground.
-
Yachi’s only friend was a woman older than her, cooler than her, and meaner than her. Tanaka Saeko played drums for a band, drove a beat up van, and frequented all the restaurants Yachi loved. That made them friends by default.
She was telling Saeko all about the recent job and how she made a new eight hundred bucks, while Saeko was barely listening, stuffing her face and kicking rocks under the picnic table.
“I actually need a favor.”
Saeko grunted.
“Help me out, and I’ll give you half.”
Yachi pulled a brown wallet out of her back pocket.
Saeko rolled her eyes. “Again? Really?”
The two of them did this every day.
“Come on,” she whined, “it’s fun! Look, the woman in the purple ordering at the counter - she’ll be perfect for it.”
The street was nearly empty, save for the few people eating at tables or walking by. It was the perfect day for making more money, and Yachi would do just that.
You were standing in front of a food stall sipping lemonade when you got a tap on your shoulder.
“Excuse me - did you drop this?”
“I’m sorry?”
“This wallet was on the ground, it’s yours, right?”
The girl opened the wallet and showed the cash inside, knowing it would pique your interest, and then let you take it from her hands.
Yachi put on a sweet smile until Saeko came over to wipe it off.
“It’s mine. Hand it over.”
Saeko took the billfold from you, but Yachi snatched it right back from her then stuffed it in her back pocket.
With her arms up in innocent defense, “You know what, I’ll just take it to the police.”
“I told you, it’s mine.”
“How am I supposed to know that?”
“What, do you want a reward or something?”
While they bickered, you finished your drink. Then, you pulled two twenties from your purse.
“It is mine, actually. Here’s your reward.”
And Yachi smiled at you, pulled the wallet out, and handed it over to you as she took your money.
“Thank you so much,” you said, being so sweet it felt fake, and then you wrapped your arms around her, giving her the most awkward hug of her life. “I appreciate it so much, thank you. Have a great day.”
Then, you walked off.
You were hardly out of earshot when Yachi started laughing to herself as she pulled the real, money filled wallet out of her pocket.
“It’s just so easy these days!”
Saeko held her hand out expectantly. Yachi slapped a bill in her hand.
“Thanks for playing,” she said, and Saeko said nothing. “You still hungry? It’ll be my treat!”
Just to brag, she pulled the wallet open, showing Saeko her earnings. The extra twenty she just stole from you didn’t seem like much in comparison to the hundreds in the pouch, but it all adds up. Every cent counts when you’ve got rent to pay.
And Saeko was laughing. Cackling like a bird.
“What? What’s so funny?”
“What are you going to buy?” she said through bursts of laughter and tears, “free samples?”
“What are you talking about?”
She looked down at the wallet and -
- it was empty.
Empty.
Her money was gone.
“You gave away the wrong one!”
Yachi felt her heartbeat in her ears. Her eyes nearly popped out of her head and landed right in the money pouch. She could have laughed, too, out of pure anger.
“I didn’t. I didn’t - I’m not stupid! I wouldn’t mess up that badly - did she…?”
She turned around, looking all over for you, then went running in the direction you had gone.
Yachi already figured out what you had done.
When you hugged her, you pick-pocketed her.
You knew she had given you an empty wallet, so you took the one with the money.
That’s the only explanation.
She ran down the block and easily found you, standing in front of a stall selling jewelry. And she was more than ready to make a scene in order to get her money back.
“Hey! Hey!”
You ignored her until she was standing right next to you.
“You stole my money!”
You glanced over at her, then said, “Hm? Aren’t you the one who found my wallet?”
“It wasn’t yours!”
You let a smile slip. “It wasn’t?”
“Look, just give it back.”
You walked away from the jewelry booth, but Yachi peddled behind you.
“Why would I do that? You gave it to me, said it was mine - so, it’s mine.”
“Well, it was a mistake! It wasn’t yours - it was mine, so I need you to return it.”
“Are you trying to steal from me?”
“What? No! I’m trying to get my money back!”
You didn’t reply, and Yachi didn’t know what else to do, so she kept following you.
She was stuck walking in your footsteps, letting you guide her wherever you were going, because she had no other ideas.
The only thing she could do was nag you until you gave in.
“All of my money was in that wallet. Like, all of it. At least eight hundred dollars. You’re stealing all of my money, and I’m already poor, so you’re just making me even more poor. Are you really okay with that?”
You said nothing.
“My name is Yachi, by the way. Hitoka Yachi. I’m pretty popular around here, actually. Are you new to town? I could show you around. For a price, anyway. Hey, if you give me my money back, I could show you how to make all the money in the world - I know the easiest ways.”
She meandered around you, stopping you in your path, finally getting the chance to speak to your face. She gave you a smile that was as genuine as it was frustrated; all you could do was laugh.
“How long do you plan on following me?”
Her smile fell. “Until I get my money back.” She was pouting, looking like she was trying too hard to look angry. You gave her a look that turned her anger up higher. “The money you stole from me.”
“In the wallet you said was mine?”
She stomped her foot; you didn’t hold back your laughter at her.
“What a con artist you are. Aren’t you clever?” you joked as you walked ahead of her, and her footsteps quickly followed yours.
“Look, I don’t know who you are, or who you think you are, but I know what I’m doing here. So maybe you should watch your tone.”
You tried not to laugh, you really did, but the sound erupted from your lips before you could seal them shut. Yachi stopped in her tracks at the sound.
You turned around, continuing to walk backwards as you said, “It seems like I’ve scammed the scammer, then, haven’t I?” And then you turned again, not stopping until you reached your destination.
Neither of you said a word until you were opening the gate outside of a quaint home.
“Where are we? What are you doing here?”
“I’m going home,” you said. “Do you want to camp out here, or come inside?”
Yachi peered behind you to look at the house, but the only thing that caught her eye was a man standing at the door. He stood there like he was a guard.
“Who is that?”
 “Who?”
Yachi pointed, and you turned to glance behind you.
“He’s just someone I work with. I’m not sure what he’s here for… maybe something I owe him.”
You sighed, and Yachi got the idea that you weren’t happy to see this guy. She was immediately intimidated by the man - his gaze alone was enough to send her shrinking into herself. Dressed in all black, his strong looking arms crossed, and his jaw locked - according to Yachi’s low standards, he looked like someone she wanted nothing to do with.
You began walking away, into your gate and toward the house.
“Hey! What about my money?!”
“You mean my money?” You walked back over to her then pulled an ink pen and an old receipt out of your purse. “Here’s my name and number. Call me if you need anything, alright?”
You shoved the paper in her hand and then you left, into your house, and the man didn’t follow. He stood in the same spot, watching Yachi’s every move. She kicked herself out of his eyesight, fast.
The money in that wallet you stole was for a late rent payment. Her shitty apartment wasn’t worth what she paid for it every month, but it held her few belongings and kept her warm enough. And it was getting harder and harder to lie her way out of paying the bills on time.
And now that money is gone.
She could have just followed you into your home, but even she isn’t stupid enough to walk into a situation like that one.
Besides, that guy was scary enough that she was grateful for being out of his sight.
She’d just have to cut her losses. You can’t win ‘em all - she’d happily lose this time if it meant she never had to see that guy again. And that wasn’t the first time she had less than a dollar to her name. She’d just have to work a little harder tomorrow.
She looked down at the note you gave her. It did in fact have a name, and a few numbers written down, but it wasn’t enough to make a phone number. Of course. Yachi didn’t expect any better, but she swore the next time she saw you, she wouldn’t let you go.
Her walking was directionless, and she didn’t know where she was, but eventually the neighborhood turned familiar enough that she felt alright to slow her pace and catch her breath. She was only wandering, looking for something to stop her, when -
“Oh my god! There she is! Right there! That’s her - that’s the girl!”
One second she was kicking a pebble down the street - the next, she barely had the time to turn and run from the two cops chasing her, who were directed by the old woman from the telephone scam.
It was one thing after another.
She turned one corner then another before she found her escape. It looked like it was placed in front of her by God himself - too good to be true - and, of course, she took the path that was laid out: a taxi stopped on the side of the road with a familiar person getting into it - you. Yachi dived into the door you had left open and slammed it behind her.
“Let’s share the ride!” she said, trying to hide how out of breath she was. Your mouth hung in surprise but you only nodded, and the driver took off. Yachi looked back - not a cop in sight.
Safe at last.
“Back already?”
Yachi sat back in her seat and relaxed, because she finally could. But the silence took over fast, and she had to strike up conversation.
“Seriously, who was that guy?”
“Oh, don’t mind him. I took care of him.”
“You - did you -”
“Kill him?” Yachi gasped, you laughed. “No, god no - who do you think I am?”
“I have no idea who you are,” she said, and you laughed. Then, she realized, “Where are we going?”
“The airport,” you replied. You turned to look at her, your makeup still perfect, your hair only slightly messier than it was before, red lips in a sweet sneaking grin. “Then to LA.”
“LA?”
You nodded.
In the rush of the series of events, Yachi thought of this as an offer. A way out. A new market.
Technically, she was on the run now, and she still had to get back what you took from her, and she had nothing here to leave, anyway. Most of her things were in the tattered backpack she took everywhere with her.
“I’ll come with - if you buy my plane ticket.”
You refused. But she’d convince you.
-
“What are we doing here, anyway?”
“I’m here for work - I don’t know where you’re going. I need to make a stop by my place.”
“Well, you’ll let me stay with you for the night, right?”
There were hours of traffic between the two of you and your destination, and Yachi got to sleep through it until you forced her awake and brought her inside of an extravagant house. She didn’t get the chance to examine the outside - you walked too fast for her to keep up.
She developed a quick habit out of following you around. She didn’t know what else she was supposed to do, and her one goal was to take her cash back from you, afterall.
But when you led her into a big, open room, it seemed like you had enough of having her as your shadow.
“Can’t you go somewhere else?”
“Where?”
“Anywhere,” you sighed. You plopped down on the long velvet couch that faced the large window, then said, “Show yourself around. I’m waiting for company.”
“Fine.”
Looking as if she was trying to be passive aggressive, she trotted back out the door the two of you came through. Outside of it was a long hallway with many doors on either side; she didn’t know which room she should go into first.
With the blue carpet catching her footsteps, it was a soft walk to the first door. Yachi swung it open brazenly to find - a bathroom.
Plain and boring as they come. A stark opposite from the rest of the house that she’d seen - the main room was lavish, filled with furniture and decorated perfectly, windows lining an entire wall with beautiful paintings hanging on the rest of them.
She thought mansion bathrooms were meant to be fancy - with toilets made of gold and water fountains rather than sinks and a swimming pool for a tub.
Maybe you sunk your budget in the living room.
She decided to leave the door open, just to be rude, before she went to the next one.
There wasn’t time for her to open it before a door at the main end of the hallway opened seemingly on its own. Yachi was curious, wondering what kind of person would be walking through it.
When she saw him, she ran, and she loudly encouraged you to do the same.
The lazy way you stood up made it obvious that you weren’t bothered at all.
“What are you doing?”
“Running away, because that scary man followed you all the way here and it’s probably because he wants to kill you,” she said, all in one breath, the entire sentence sounding like one word.
You only crossed your arms. Yachi didn’t understand.
“Excuse me.”
The sound of his voice behind her made her yelp, and she ran straight to hide behind the couch.
“Whatever she did has nothing to do with me!”
The only part of her body visible was her eyes, peeking out just enough to see what this man’s next move was.
He completely ignored her, gunning straight for you. He reached his arms out and Yachi didn’t want to look - she couldn’t bear to see what he was about to do to you.
The man looked strong, and maybe you were capable of fighting but Yachi wouldn’t bet her stolen money on it. You weren’t even stepping away, in fact - you were stepping toward him.
He wrapped his arms around you and that was it, Yachi thought - he was probably going to squeeze you until you popped. She clamped her eyes shut, but then opened one of them because she couldn’t help herself. She just had to watch as he -
Kissed you.
Yachi really did not understand.
“Keiji, I missed you to death.”
“You couldn’t stand a couple days apart?”
“It felt like forever. I think I should just stitch myself to you, I’d be happier that way.”
Yachi shot up out of her hiding spot.
“I thought this was the guy you owed!”
“I did owe him. I told you I took care of him, didn’t I?”
The wink you sent Yachi’s way had her dropping her jaw in a realizing, disgusting anger.
“By the way,” Keiji said, “Where’s the big scary man who’s trying to kill you?”
Yachi didn’t care about a thing the man said, and she didn’t care about the joyous look on your face. All she cared about was getting answers.
“Who the hell are you? What do you want from me?”
“I told you who I am. You’re the one who’s been following me around this entire time - remember?” You weren’t even looking at Yachi. Instead, you were busy straightening Keiji’s collar. You kissed him once again and then stepped away, saying, “Could you bring me that briefcase, babe?” and he did as he was told.
She stood on the couch and then jumped over it, landing on her feet with a punctuating thud. “Because you stole my money. All of my money! And I want it back!”
“Right - about that money… Where’d it come from, exactly?”
Keiji sat the briefcase on the table in front of you. You opened it and pulled out three different things.
Yachi didn’t try to explain herself. You already had all of the answers, and you held them up for her to see.
The terrible pamphlet for the phone company she handmade, the contract    signed by the woman she had scammed, and the crumpled note she had thrown away.
And she felt like a child again, being scolded by her mother for her bad grades. Like she was small, like you were bigger than her so that meant you were right. It didn’t feel fair.
“Where did you get those?”
You offered no explanation. “That poor, innocent woman,” you said with a tut. “But she wasn’t the first, was she?”
“So what? Are you going to rat me out or something?”
“No. Honestly, I couldn’t care less about it.”
“So what is this for?” Yachi took a loud step toward you, trying to make herself feel bigger, stronger, smarter. “Just give me my money so I can leave.”
“I never said I had your money.”
Yachi froze.
“What?”
You shrugged. “I don’t have it. You assumed I did.”
“Then who does?!”
“The girl you were with - she got a hold of it.”
“Saeko?!”
Then, Keiji stepped into it. “I think you might’ve taken this one too far, sweetheart.”
“But she knows what she’s doing,” you said, and the sweet voice you used with him sounded like nails on a chalkboard. “I didn’t do anything. Every choice she made was completely independent.”
The worst part?
You were right.
Yachi chose to take that old lady’s money. She chose you out of the crowd to play the wallet scam against. She chose to follow you home, to leave you at your house, to seek refuge in the taxi you were in. And then, on top of it all, she followed you to a brand new city.
And you didn’t suggest she do a single thing. You just let her.
It was her own fault. So she crumpled to the ground, because there was simply nothing left for her to do.
She fell for every word that left your mouth - and you didn’t even ask her to.
It was pathetic. She was pathetic.
You stood in front of her, tossed the pamphlet on the ground for her to look at. “It doesn’t feel good, does it? Being stolen from?”
Yachi didn’t reply.
“Do you want some advice?”
Yachi watched as you knelt down in front of her. She looked up at you, at your too sweet smile. Still, there were no cracks in your image. It was strange, and it was enticing, and it was maddening.
“Learn how to choose your targets, sweetheart. Maybe you should pick a different line of work.”
You wadded up the note and threw it down in front of her, just like she had thrown it to the trash. Your words were cutting, even as you got up and walked away. You had just given her a failing grade on the one thing she felt like she was good at - it hurt.
And she was all alone now, on the floor in a random home in this strange city. And she wished she had somewhere to go.
Until a hand reached out to her.
Keiji.
She took it, because she didn’t have any other choice - besides sitting there forever.
“She can be a little mean sometimes. Don’t take it too personally.”
Yachi didn’t know what to say, so she said nothing.
“Do you want to make your money back?”
Yachi nodded.
“Then let’s go. We’re already late.”
-
Maybe you were too mean to the young girl, but it definitely wasn’t your fault. It’s just the way things happened to play out.
Keiji obviously believed otherwise.
“I’m just saying - she’s just a kid. You didn’t have to go so hard on her.”
“I was teaching her a lesson!”
“You could’ve been a little nicer about it. That’s all I’m saying.”
“Keiji, you were in on it.”
“Hey, you were the boss - I was just doing what I was told!”
“Can you stop talking about me like I’m not right here?”
The both of you turned around to see Yachi behind you, tagging along like a third wheel. Keiji mumbled a quick apology; you continued walking without a word to her.
“Where are we even going?” the girl asked.
“To strike up a deal,” you said, feigning excitement so it would get her in a better mood.
And it worked like you were rubbing paint off your hands onto her. She piped up immediately, getting a spring in her step.
“Okay, what’s the plan?”
“You’ll see.”
“Nothing you need to know yet,” Keiji said as you all stopped in front of a large ornate gate; behind it, the biggest house Yachi had ever seen.
“Whoa. Is this some door-to-door scam for millionaires or something?”
You groaned loud. “Something like that.”
Keiji dropped your hand and moved to press a button on the intercom next to the fence. In less than a minute, three men came walking down the path on the opposite side; one of them used a key to open the gate.
All of them looked rough and mean. Dressed in leather jackets and lazily buttoned patterned shirts, gold chains around their necks and rings on their fingers, Yachi could easily assume these guys were cheap security for whoever lived in this mansion. She didn’t like the look of them.
The man in the center pulled his sunglasses off then shook Keiji’s hand.
“About time,” he said, then started leading your group inside.
Around the back of the house was a pool and a party. The bright blue water looked refreshing enough to jump into fully clothed, and all of the beautiful girls in bikinis had Yachi feeling self conscious of the little effort she put into her appearance. You had thrown a button up shirt and black pants at her and made her get changed in the car, and she was feeling far from herself.
She watched you and Keiji shaking hands and making conversation with the person who seemed to be the owner of this house - a tall woman who wore glasses and had long, pin straight, jet black hair.
Yachi wasn’t doing such a good job at following your conversation, but she heard the tail end of what the woman was saying.
“...This will be so great for both of us, I’m so excited to finally be finishing this deal. Um - where is the… supply?”
“The delivery should be here soon,” Keiji said, checking his watch. “Set to arrive around back.”
“Right - of course. No point in risking traveling alone with something so important.”
“In the meantime,” you said, and you wrapped your arms around Yachi’s shoulders and pulled her to stand in front of you. “This is an intern of ours - the one we were telling you about. She has been paramount in developing the new product.”
Yachi forced a fake, awkward smile at the woman.
“Oh, it’s amazing to meet you!”
“The two of you should get acquainted. Just don’t spill any secrets.” You winked at her and then took a step back. “The two of us will head over to the warehouse and we’ll give you a call when the goods arrive. Sound good?”
Leaving no chance for Yachi to reply, you and Keiji left her alone, walking past the party down a path that led behind the house.
Keiji asked you, “How do you think she’ll do?”
You shrugged. “She can’t fuck it up too badly. We’re already in the homestretch.”
The warehouse was exactly that - a large building with two garage doors and no windows, with its only entrance door guarded by two men. One of them short, thin, and balding; the other tall, with salt and pepper hair and too much muscle. You greeted them both then swung the door open and walked into the fluorescent lights inside.
The building was mostly empty now; Ten, your current client, had gotten rid of nearly all of her inventory after the first meeting she had with you. To make room for the stock you’d promised.
Arms wrapped around your waist and pulled you in. “We’ve got time to kill, baby.”
You looked back at him, kissed his cheek. “Not as much time as you need.”
“You only need five minutes.” He pulled away just enough to turn you around, then pulled you right back against him, teasing a kiss against your lips. “I thought you missed me?”
He kissed you soft, just enough to get you to want more - to remind you what you were missing. As headstrong as you were, Keiji was the only one who knew how to crack your resolve.
You let him kiss you as much as he wanted to, because you weren’t ready to put up a fight yet.
“You know I missed you,” you whined against his lips. He caressed your pouting bottom lip with his thumb.
“You’re a sweetheart. My sweet girl. Why don’t we just get this over with so I can show you how much I missed you?”
You kissed his finger, then his palm, and looked up at him with bright eyes and a swelling smile.
“I think we have five minutes to spare.”
-
Yachi had been alone with this woman for half an hour, and getting through the conversation felt like swimming in putty.
At this point, she felt like she deserved a fucking degree in bullshitting, because even though her words made no sense to herself, the woman ate them up like candy.
Yachi had learned very little, and yet way too much about the business practices here.
The woman’s name was Ten, and she’s worked in Hollywood as a film director for nearly twenty years, and the product she was buying off of you was… drugs. All of her money didn’t come from the shitty movies she’s made, but from the drugs she’s been peddling.
So Yachi had gotten tied up with drug dealers. She could handle your lying and stealing, but this was too far for her.
She wouldn’t realize the irony in that sentiment.
“I was skeptical before, to be honest. But after meeting you, I’m nothing but excited,” Ten told her.
It all felt surreal even though she was clueless of the situation. She had Ten convinced that she was a pharmaceutical technician who lacked experience but had an abundance of knowledge - a great mind who would become a pillar in the industry, someone who would change the drug industry and make people like her even richer.
Your call to Ten was a saving grace.
“Perfect. Send one of the guards up to escort me with the money. I’ll be right down.”
Yachi joined Ten, a muscular guard, and four briefcases to the warehouse around back. On the walk, Ten explained how she did all her business in cash, because it was easy payment with no risk of being tracked - even though Yachi never asked.
When they entered the building, Yachi held her breath, preparing to witness her first ever drug deal, and she had no idea what she was in for.
It was a giant room that was completely empty. There was a table in the center, a briefcase on top of it, and the fluorescent light shining directly onto it looked like a spotlight.
Yachi was confused, and Ten seemed even more so.
High heels echoed on the concrete floor as the woman walked to the case. She opened it, and then she snapped her head around to glare at Yachi.
The briefcase was empty.
“What’s going on here?”
She made her way back to Yachi quickly; arms came out to grab her, and she ducked underneath them. She fell onto her hands and knees, turned around, and crawled toward the door before clambering back up to her feet.
“Honestly, I have no clue!” she called back.
She pushed the door open, she saw safety in the sunlight outside. She only got to take one step on the grass before she was cut off by the guard who was with them before, still carrying the cases of money under his arm.
There was no way she was fighting him off, so when he picked her up, she let him. He threw her over his shoulder and all she could do was beat on his back with small fists.
“Let me go!” she cried. “I have nothing to do with this! Seriously! I don’t even know those two! Just let me go!”
When he finally put her down, it was onto warm metal. She opened her scared eyes to find she was in the bed of a pickup truck and so was her kidnapper.
With the truck moving she had almost no balance, but she was able to find her way to her hands and knees so she could look through its back window.
You stared at her in the rear view mirror. You even gave her a little wave, one that was all confidence and cockiness and made Yachi want to scream.
“What the hell was that?” She turned around, glared at the man who had captured her. “Who are you?”
He laughed, grinned wide, and stuck his hand out for her to shake.
“Bokuto - nice to meet ‘ya!”
-
You had been pulling the wool over Ten’s eyes for months now, building a relationship and rapport that seemed fruitful for the both of you. Ten shared secrets with you that you never needed to know, because you already had a plan scratched out before you ever met her.
She dealt the kind of drugs that killed people. The deeper the cut, the bigger the profit - that’s how she spoke of her cheap sales. It was easy to take advantage of her greed, convince her to only buy from you, pretend you were bringing something to the table she couldn’t pass up. So she cut her ties even though she was already bleeding money, and she put her last couple millions into the briefcases you stole from her, and if she ever recovered you’d give her a round of applause.
Maybe she would learn her lesson. Or maybe she wouldn’t. But your work with her was finally done.
The group of you were gathered on the terrace, drinks in hand, for an evening celebrating a job pulled off.
“All that work for one day of fun,” Bokuto sighed.
You were quick to scold him, “It’s not meant to be fun, Bo, it’s supposed to be work.”
The night sky was clouded by city lights; the stars were replaced by lampposts and neon signs. This town was alive beyond the balcony rails ahead of you. But you were only watching Yachi, who sat across from you, on the ground behind the table. She had her knees up, hugging them like she was afraid of taking up too much space, as if she had ever seen a terrace this large.
You sat up from your seat - which was Keiji’s lap - and placed your drink on the table, before sitting down on her level.
“How much did you say was in that wallet?”
She huffed and avoided your eye contact.
“I don’t know… eight hundred dollars.”
You slid a stack of cash across the table to her. Her eyes grew, and she sat still.
“For your work today,” you said.
“How much is that?”
“A few thousand. You weren’t too integral - just a distraction, really - so it’s not much.”
“...Thanks.”
“You could stick around, if you want.” It was a delicate offer, one that didn’t mean much to you, just like the money you handed over. “We always have room.”
She didn’t reply, not at first, but after a moment she gave you a meek nod.
“And I’ll get paid more?”
You stood back up then sat next to Keiji, and he pulled you in close; a kiss on your head, then your cheek, then your neck, and you were ready to forget about the world and only think about his lips.
“There’s always more to be paid,” you told her. “If you’re going to stick around, you should probably get acquainted with everyone.” You pointed to your left, “That’s Bokuto. You already met him, I think. He’s the muscle.” You meant it as a joke, but he flexed a bicep that proved your words. Then, you gestured to your right, looking at the old man laid across the wicker couch. He still wore the security guard disguise. “That’s Kudo.”
He gave a weak hearted salute. “Sure am.”
“There’s others, but they don’t always come around. You’ll meet them if you’re on the team long enough.”
“Team?”
It was innocent, the way she said it - with her head turned to the side and her eyes squinting. You were sure that you had felt the way she was feeling, back when you were five years younger and just meeting this group for the first time.
“Yeah, we’re a team, I guess. That’s the best word for it.” Try as you might to be nonchalant, you couldn’t completely cover the pride in your tone. “You’re in, if you want to be.”
You already knew she would stick around, because she had nowhere else to go. Anybody else who offered her refuge wouldn’t have good intentions, and you weren’t sure if she knew that or not - and that’s why you were making this offer in the first place. When you had heard about Yachi from Saeko, you knew she needed a place to fit - and that you had just the spot.
Even if you had to teach her a tough lesson the hard way, you meant well. And those lessons were far from over.
“Think about it,” you told her, and that was all of the time you were willing to give for the moment - because the alcohol had you buzzing, and Keiji’s arms around you were pulling you away.
So you let him take you off your seat and toward the door, but you had one more bit of information to share with Yachi.
“Oh, and - remember the old woman you stole that money from?”
Yachi perked up.
“She’ll be here tomorrow.”
-
Something about spending the evening outside made you wish to be swallowed up by the night time. Your bedroom was perfectly warm yet your hands were frigid. You were completely relaxed but your shoulders still felt tense.
Nights like those carried a different feeling. One free of planning, lying, and conning; it was the release of all of those things settling in the celebration of success. Like the clouds finally parted and you could see the stars with childlike relief. You no longer had to worry about getting away with something.
With your back to Keiji, you let your face fall. You took a breath and held it, because no one was waiting for you to exhale.
“What a day,” you said to yourself. “Now that it’s over it feels like a perfect night for running away.”
“Away from me?” Keiji joked.
You turned your head only slightly. Enough that he could see that your guard was down, but you didn’t dare give him your eyes.
“With you.”
He pulled his t-shirt on and came to sit next to you. “And where would we go?”
“Anywhere,” you said with a shrug. And you thought about his question, and if your answer would be the right one. If it should be the truth, or another lie.  “Somewhere normal, maybe.”
Keiji laughed. “Normal? You’d get bored of that in a day.”
“I would not,” you replied, “not if you were with me.”
“Don’t get all romantic on me now.” He got up, got into bed.
You might have been sitting on the edge of something you didn’t want to fall off of.
“You don’t want to run away with me, Keiji?” You couldn’t tell if you were making a joke or not, and you didn’t know if you wanted to hear his answer at all.
Because, in reality, you knew what his real answer would be. You knew his honesty was ugly and that’s why he showed you half truths.
You guessed he decided to ignore it all together. “Come to bed with me, baby.”
You stood up, walked around the bed and sat too close to him. He pushed your hair back away from your face, held you and looked at you.
“Why are you pouting?
“I’m serious,” you said.
“About what?”
“I don’t know.”
He laughed at that, all lighthearted and soft, and kissed you like it’d make you drop it. “Let’s talk about it later, baby - turn around, let me unzip your dress for you.”
“No, Keiji,” and you pulled away just enough that you didn’t have to look at him. “You don’t ever think about what it would be like?”
“It feels like we’ve talked about this before,” he said. “What are you getting at?”
“I just think it would be nice if things changed.” You stood up, and for a split second you thought about dropping it.
The last time you had a conversation like this was years ago, when you finally had enough money to retire and live easy. Keiji had brought it up, just offering the idea, and you had to remind him that it would never work out. Not with the two of you, anyway - not with the relationship you had.
Because nothing lasts forever, and you’re better than settling down, and you weren’t going to let yourself get hurt again. You promised each other that either of you could walk away any time, so don’t get too attached.
And if a break up never came, well - both of you had been scarred by the vision of death, witnessing it literally - viciously. You don’t have a particularly safe job, and history tends to repeat, and it was easier to move on if your life didn’t revolve around the other’s beating heart.
But it was too late for those sentiments to matter anymore. It had been almost three years since then, and you didn’t fear the future anymore. Keiji stayed, even though you thought he never would - even though no one ever stuck around that long - and you were starting to think that, maybe, he was going to be there forever. Maybe it was okay for you to ask him to.
So you wouldn’t let it go.
“We could have more than just… this. You know? What if we just bought a big house in a suburb? We could have pets, and… We could get married, even! And go on a honeymoon to some place nice - and we’ll be there to have fun instead of - I don’t know - rigging sports bets or stealing paintings! And it would all be so simple and easy!”
“Where is all of this coming from?”
You didn’t even know. But you meant it, all of it, and you wanted him to understand.
“I just - I… I want to have a life with you, Kei.”
“We have a life together,” he said, like he was confused, and he got up and walked over to you, he tried grabbing at you like he could put you back together. Like he could fit you in his hands. “This is our life. Can you seriously imagine us living like that? Getting married?”
“Can’t you?”
He knew his answer, he just didn’t want to say it.
“This is too much,” he said. “We’ve talked about this. I thought you didn’t want that.”
“What if I changed my mind?”
“I don’t know what you want me to say -”
“I want you to agree with me!”
“I don’t! And you know why - I…” He reeled his next words in, it seemed. He took a breath and calmed down and tried to speak softer. “You just want to… quit?”
He pulled you closer, like he could tell you were trying to run away.
“We’re so close to figuring everything out. We can’t just give up.”
“I know that.”
“Okay?” You looked away from him and he let you. “That’s why we’re here. That’s why we’re together.”
“Have all of these years together just been a waste, then? If you can’t even entertain the thought of having a life with me other than this?”
You were holding onto him so tight and you didn’t care if it hurt. Keiji had been your one constant for years now - there was no way he was still afraid of committing to you, when he had basically already done so.
But it was like tying down a wild dog. You couldn’t.
“Why didn’t you bring this up sooner? Our goal was never to settle down and have kids some day - it’s not - we’re not like that!”
“Not like what?” you asked. You were completely disheartened, now, dropping the grip you had on him. “Not serious? Not real?”
“Not normal!” he said, loud, and then he laughed, like he thought you were being funny. “I mean - we’ve never even been an actual couple - did you really think we would end up like that?”
“Maybe I did. What’s so wrong with that?”
“You know I don’t want that,” he said. “We aren’t together to have some happy ending - I never wanted that with you.”
And that was it. The last push.
But it was into anger rather than sadness; a rage instead of a broken heart; a free fall instead of a straight plummet.
“You did a great job at acting like it, Keiji.”
He laughed again, and you realized the irony in your words. The fact is that all he ever does is put on an act for other people because lying for money was his job, and you had the heart to believe he’d been real with you.
“I was never acting - obviously you can’t say the same.”
For the first time in your life, you let him have the last word. You were quick to collect some of your things and leave the room with a slamming door, and you stormed to a guest bedroom without a thought in your mind.
You didn’t cry, you didn’t let yourself feel sad. You were angry and annoyed and exhausted - maybe even a little embarrassed. And that anger kept you distracted, so you latched onto it and let it burn.
-
The next morning, you assumed everyone had already left. When a job was over and everything finally settled, most of the crew found other places to go - because they had money to spend. So you weren’t expecting to interact with anyone.
But Yachi was waiting in the hallway, still in her pajamas.
“Finally! I’ve been waiting forever for you to wake up. What took so long?”
“Don’t ask.”
“Fine. Gosh.”
“What do you want?”
“Well, I just had a few questions.”
You walked to the bathroom and she followed you into it. She closed the door behind her and then hopped up onto the counter next to the sink.
“Now that I have my money back I need to figure out what to do with it. I think I should get some new clothes, but mostly I just want to find some good food - what are the best restaurants around here, by the way? Honestly, I think you owe me lunch for the last few days. It’s the least you could do to make me feel part of the team.”
Out of nowhere, the door opened. Keiji was standing behind it.
“Can you knock?!” you immediately said, making him scoff.
“Can you learn to lock the door?”
You slammed the door in his face, and it made you feel marginally better. Then you looked over to Yachi, remembering her existence, and opened it again.
“Can I get some privacy? Please?”
“Yeah,” she said, stumbling over her words to land on her feet. “We’ll catch up later, I guess.”
You hoped later never came.
And instead of a peaceful, empty home, you were met with a full house of expectants, because you had already promised them more work to do.
“I thought you liked to get an early start.” It was Keiji, and he was talking like he wanted to start a fight. “It’s noon.”
“You could have started the meeting without me. You have all the information I do.”
“This one was your idea.”
“They’re all my ideas,” you said.
You pushed by him and went into the living room where everyone was waiting for you.
The only silver lining was seeing Ms. Kim, who had finally arrived sometime last night. She sat on the couch with a giant ball of yarn next to her, and the makings of a blue scarf sat on her lap as she knitted away. Her straight hair was shorter than it was a few weeks ago, and she had new glasses that sat on the tip of her nose, but she had the same familiarly grumpy look that always made you smile.
If you were honest, you didn’t even know what you were supposed to be talking about with them. Keiji always helped you get things in order, line up plans, and work out the tempo of meetings like these.
“Do you have the layout of the bar?” you asked him.
He was just sitting down on the couch when you looked at him. “No,” he said, arms crossed.
“Why not?”
“You didn’t tell me to get it.”
“I shouldn’t have to tell you. Did you do nothing? Where’s the list of the employees?”
“Do you think I’m your assistant? Do you think I spend twenty-four hours a day doing shit for you?”
“Am I supposed to do it all on my own?”
“It’s not that difficult, I’m sure you’d figure it out if you put in some effort. But it might take a few tries.”
“Fine,” you said. You looked around the table in front of you to see empty folders and blank papers. “Since Akaashi didn’t do his job we’ll just have to delay this a few days. And everyone can thank him for that.”
“Just because you say it’s my fault doesn’t mean it’s true. You haven’t figured that out already?”
“Since you don’t want to help I’ll just go ahead and cross you off the list of team members needed for this job - does that work for you?”
“Sounds great,” he said. “It sounds wonderful, actually - I can’t wait to see you try to do something all on your own.”
“And I can’t wait to stop hearing your voice!”
Both of you stormed out of the room at that, and slamming doors were heard on opposite sides of the house.
The silence in the living room was deafening.
“Did something… happen?” Yachi eventually asked among the group.
Ms. Kim was the first one to speak up, “They used to act this way… Must’ve had a fight.”
That made Kudo perk up with a gravelly laugh, “Oh, a lover’s quarrel.”
Honestly, Yachi couldn’t believe it. She had never seen the two of you act any way other than repulsively in love. She would have thought you had never fought before - everything seemed just perfect between the two of you.
But she was immediately interested in knowing about your past. No one had told her anything about how they got started, or what kind of work they did before now, and she was dying to know something.
“What do you mean? They used to argue a lot?”
“Ha - you could say that.”
“They were unbearable,” Bokuto said. “More unbearable than they are now, if you could believe it…”
“I don’t,” Yachi said. “Tell me about it.”
Her request was directed at Ms. Kim who did nothing but blink at her.
“Can’t you ask someone else? I’m not a storyteller!”
“Come on, Kim,” Kudo said, “we all know you love reminiscing on the good old days. Tell the newbie all about it.”
“Five years ago aren’t the good old days,” she said. “Fine. I’ll give you the quick version and spare the details. Don’t get comfortable.”
... ... ...
thank you for reading!

"i'm sorry, it's just not working out."
you could feel tears forming in your eyes as you had your whole attention fixed on the tv screen right in front of you. beside you is your boyfriend of many years, (silently) judging the way you're so immersed in the, honestly, quite a cliché storyline of the sunday drama you two had been watching for weeks now.
"why do you keep watching this show and then proceed to complain about how sad the girl's love life is?" he asks, turning slightly to his side to look at you.
"you don't get it, keiji." you said quietly, turning to look back at him with a pout on your face. "i'm trying to live that thrilling part of a relationship through this fictional couple, let me enjoy it in peace!" you added, arms crossed in front of you as you turn to look back at television screen again.
"we are living that thrilling relationship, what are you talking about?" he continued, eyes slightly narrowed as he continued to (playfully, he insists) judge your taste in romance. making you let out a small sigh. you waited until the screen showed the ending credits of today's episode before turning the tv off, shifting your full attention to your boyfriend.
"say you're breaking up with me." you say, face completely serious that it actually scared your keiji a little bit. "wha– excuse me?" he asked, hoping he didn't hear what he just heard from you.
"no no, i don't mean it like!" you say almost panicking when you heard the seriousness in his tone. "what i meant is, say you're breaking up with me. just, act like the actors did in the show earlier!" you clarified, a small smile appearing in your face.
"why? what for?" he asked, still confused as to where you were going with the impromptu 'acting exercise'. "just do it! tell me what those words make you feel!" you encouraged him and for some reason, he hesitantly agreed to you.
"y/n, we need to— we, uhm... we need to..." he stutters, trying to hold eye contact with you before shaking his head. "nope, i cannot do it. i physically cannot utter those words, y/n." he says sternly, still shaking his head. even the thought of him breaking up with you is too much for him.
"oh come on, keiji! i know you can do it!" you continued to encourage him, although only jokingly this time. him telling you that he cannot even pretend to break up with you actually made you feel realized how much you're in love with this man. "you're a bad actor, keiji." you added, laughing quietly as you shifted closer to him.
"maybe i am? i mean, it would be unfair if i'm a good actor because that would make perfect." he says in a straight face but it only took less than a second before the two of you broke down into laughter, his face turning beet red in embarrassment of what he just said.
your hands cupped his heated cheeks, eyes glued with his as you give him a reassuring nod. "yes, my perfect boyfriend." you say before placing a small kiss on his lips which he gladly reciprocated.

dear yn
this is the first time i have ever done one of these so i’m having help while writing this, i’m begging that you don’t find this too cringy. even though i already do.
i sit three seats behind you in science, you tend to turn around a lot as some of your friends sit near me. thats really the only time i get to see your face but i get kinda giddy when i do, you’re really pretty. i’m sorry that was insanely cheesy.
wow this is a lot harder than i was told it should be. i’m falling behind a little bit with chemistry as i’ve been caught up with volleyball practice, but i was wondering if you would help me out with studying for our next test? like a date?
not just studying, i’ve wanted to take you out somewhere nice for a while but i couldn’t find a way to ask you. you don’t have to but tsuyu told me some of your favourite places to go, i would like to take you there if you would let me.
we could go to the library and study for a little bit and then go to the aquarium? she said that you liked it there. there is also this new restaurant that opened near school, it would mean a lot to me if i could try it with you.♡
ok thats all. (i think)
again, you really don’t have to, but if you would like to go on a date with me my number is (xxx) xxx-xxx-xxx. i’m really hoping 317 is your locker otherwise this is gonna be really awkward.
love akaashi

a/n: this is my second entry (a little university au with a few taylor swift lyrics thrown in hehe) for @kyopmi's the four seasons collab! thank you again mizu for letting me join <3
Tumblr media
First Winter: “‘Cause all I know is we said, ‘Hello’/ And your eyes look like coming home/ All I know is a simple name/ And everything has changed”
Outside the window beside him, Akaashi can see the university campus slowly being blanketed in white: delicate snowflakes falling from the light gray skies and gently landing on the barren trees, on the pavement, and on the heads of other students as they attempt to escape the cold wind on this Sunday evening.
Akaashi takes a sip of his bitter coffee then sets the mug down next to his laptop and he notices how messy the table has become. It is cluttered with his notes and books, which he would usually feel a bit self-conscious about. However, practically all the tables in the quaint coffee shop have been taken over by stressed students with a mountain of assessments and exams looming over them.
Fortunately, Akaashi doesn’t feel overwhelmed yet. So far, he’s successfully planned and organized his time wisely. As for today, all he has scheduled is reviewing for an exam and hopefully the revision will instill in him the confidence he needs to ace it tomorrow.
With renewed focus, the raven-haired boy picks up a stack of his notes and starts reading them, occasionally parting his lips to quietly repeat some important information to himself. He becomes so lost in memorizing all the little details that he is oblivious to the sudden presence hovering by his table.
He doesn’t even notice you when you clear your throat in an attempt to grab his attention.
“Hello? Akaashi?” you meekly greet, hoping you don’t sound and look as awkward as you feel.
Your fellow first-year classmate looks up at you slightly startled, his ocean-blue eyes wide behind his black framed glasses. He wasn’t expecting to see you, his crush that he’s never mustered the courage to talk to before.
It wasn’t like you had an intimidating aura about you. You seem very friendly, sweet, and approachable. To Akaashi, though, this somehow made you even more scary to talk to and he ended up wasting weeks thinking of ways to start a conversation with you. But it looks like all that mental preparation was for nothing because here you are, actually speaking to him.
“Sorry Y/N, I didn’t see you there,” Akaashi apologizes after snapping out his thoughts, nervously adjusting his glasses on his face.
“No no, I’m sorry for interrupting,” you assure him, shaking your head vigorously, causing a few snowflakes to fall from your hair. “It’s just all the other tables were occupied, and I was wondering if I could sit here? Unless someone else is already sitting here, of course!”
Akaashi stares at you for a few seconds, in a brief state of disbelief before responding, “Go ahead, no one’s sitting there.”
You offer him a small smile and unwrap your red chunky scarf from around your neck and drape it across the back of the chair. As you settle in, you look at Akaashi’s notes and instantly realize that they’re all from your shared class.
“Are you revising for the exam tomorrow?” you inquire before considering the possibility that Akaashi might think you’re nosy and you quickly add: “I’m here to study for it too.”
“Yeah, I am,” he confirms. Akaashi watches you sit across from him, his heart rate gradually increasing as, in a rare moment of spontaneity, he asks, “Do you want to revise together?”
You look up at Akaashi with a bright smile, that he believes might be capable of melting the snow outside and reply, “Sure!”
~~~
Second Winter: “You can hear it in the silence, silence, you/ You can feel it on the way home, way home, you/ You can see it with the lights out, lights out/ You are in love, true love/ You are in love”
Sunday afternoons in your second year of university follow a consistent pattern: you wake up, go through your morning routine, then head out to meet up with Akaashi at the coffee shop, where you had your first proper conversation with him, to study and do some work together, despite not having any classes together anymore.
Akaashi is usually the one to show up first for your, what his roommates Bokuto and Kuroo have dubbed, “study dates”. When he first started meeting up with you at the coffee shop, he continuously insisted to his extroverted friends that these weren’t dates, but he eventually gave up because he knows that arguing with them is pointless.
However, Akaashi cannot deny that he looks forward to seeing you every Sunday, which is why he arrives earlier than you. He enjoys securing a table for the two of you, preferably the coveted table by the window and he likes having everything organized and ready for when you arrive.
Seeing you walk through the doors with your headphones on, scanning the coffee shop for him and smiling when you spot him brings Akaashi a surge of happiness, especially if he’s been through a particularly crappy week. At first, when you began meeting at the coffee shop, Akaashi was shy and awkward around you, but now he’s somehow figured out how to act comfortable around you.
You and Akaashi typically study together in silence, but sometimes you quiz each other when you have exams coming up. During your breaks, you both complain about your workloads and your classes and discuss what you have coming up during the week. Sometimes, you and Akaashi will look out the window and people-watch, crafting elaborately goofy backstories for all the passerby you see.
It is while people-watching and sipping on hot chocolate on one winter’s day that you glance away from the window to look at Akaashi and comment, “You know it’s about a year since we started studying together.”
“Really? I can’t believe it’s been that long,” Akaashi remarks with a dumbstruck expression.
“I guess time really does fly by,” you say before your eyes sparkle with excitement as something outside catches your attention. “Akaashi! Look how cute that corgi is!”
The glasses-wearing man cannot help, but be endeared by how enthusiastic you are about a dog. He has come to admire how your eyes sparkle every time you see a cute animal. And how your eyebrows knit together whenever you are in deep concentration. And how you purse your lips when you are reading something that you don’t quite comprehend. And how you happily sigh after taking the first sip of your favorite beverage.
With every little thing he learns about you, Akaashi’s crush on you has unconsciously bloomed into actual love.
~~~
Third Winter: “And this is when the feeling sinks in/I don't wanna miss you like this/ Come back, be here/ Come back, be here”
Through the window, Akaashi can see that the coffee shop isn’t particularly busy on this Sunday evening. The table by the window is vacant and the space is warmly lit. Part of him is tempted to step in and escape the chilly weather then get some coffee and read the book in his bag for half an hour.
However, after a moment’s consideration, he dismisses this idea.
It doesn’t feel right anymore to be there without you.
Akaashi hasn’t really seen much of you over the past year. Firstly, you studied abroad for a few months and the time difference made it a challenge to stay in touch. When you came back, Akaashi had already taken a part-time job at the university’s library and you started working part-time off-campus, which meant you had to commute a lot.
It was difficult to find time to hang out with one another when friend groups, school, work, and other responsibilities seem to constantly keep you apart. This eventually led to you and Akaashi rarely texting each other anymore.
Akaashi wasn’t bitter towards you for losing touch. Honestly, he understood. Life got in the way sometimes. And he could just as easily reach out to you, but he was afraid. He knew he shouldn’t be, as Bokuto and Kuroo liked to point out. You viewed him as a friend and vice versa.
Still, he couldn’t help, but think that maybe you were hanging out and studying with him last year out of politeness. Maybe you finally had a chance to do stuff you enjoyed with other people and him randomly texting you now would simply be a nuisance to you.
Would things have been different if he revealed how he truly felt about you? Probably not. There is no way you felt the same way about him, and any potential confession would have terminated your friendship.
Akaashi pulls the collar of his coat higher up as a frosty breeze hits his face and he continues trudging down the sidewalk under dark winter sky. He knows it would be best to forget about you and forget about all the moments you shared together. It would cause him less heartache.
Still, he doesn’t want to stop longing for your presence in his life once again.
~~~
Fourth Winter: “Been here all along/ So, why can't you see?/ You belong with me”
It’s Saturday morning and Akaashi is sitting at the table in the coffee shop that he has sat at countless times. He takes a brief pause from the book he’s been absorbed in since he arrived in order to glance out the window: it snowed the prior night, and a light blanket of snow has covered the university campus. Students casually stroll past the window, lost in their own individual worlds, as the snow crunches beneath their feet. A pang of nostalgia hits him as he is reminded once again that he’ll soon no longer be a student. Soon, he’ll be entering the working world, hopefully as an editor.
Not wanting to get lost thinking about the future, Akaashi picks up his book and resumes reading it. He’s not very far into the book, roughly a quarter of the way through, yet so much mystery and tension has already been established that he easily forgets about the real world. And he is soon so immersed in his book’s fictional world that he is oblivious to the sudden presence beside him.
He doesn’t even notice you when you clear your throat in an attempt to grab his attention.
“Hello? Akaashi?” a familiar voice beside greets.
“Y/N?” Akaashi says with an inquisitive tone even before he looks up to see you standing there, almost bashfully, in your favorite red chunky scarf that you wore during your serendipitous encounter.
“It’s been a while.”
“Yeah, it has been. I wasn’t expecting to see you,” he admits as he notices you're still standing. He gestures to the unoccupied chair across from him and adds, “No one’s sitting there, if you want to sit down.”
You offer him a meek smile as you sit down across from him, not bothering to take off your scarf or long coat. As you rub your hands together, trying to warm yourself up a bit, Akaashi admires how radiant you look. But that shouldn’t come as a surprise. Every single time you sat at this table, you always looked radiant.
“I was actually just walking by,” you commence explaining, your eyes focused on Akaashi’s empty coffee mug instead of his face, “when I saw you through the window and I thought I would just stop by and say ‘hi’ and apologize. I know we haven’t talked in forever and I feel like it’s my fault. I was just so busy, and time kept passing by really quickly and I felt a little awkward texting you after not talking to you in such a long time. And since we didn’t hang out much outside our usual study sessions, I wasn’t sure you still wanted to spend time with me...”
As you trail off, you finally meet Akaashi’s eyes and he can see the sincerity and guilt in your gaze, which tugs at his heart strings. He wishes that he had something prepared to say to you, some eloquent and rehearsed speech, but he knows that the best he can offer you is honest thoughts and feelings.
“Y/N, I’ve always loved spending time with you. I still want to spend time with you. I’m sorry if I ever made you think otherwise. And don’t apologize for us losing touch. It’s partially my fault as well. I could have just as easily texted you and asked if you wanted to hang out sometime.”
A chuckle escapes you when Akaashi finishes speaking and you slouch back in your chair as you groan, “Are we just a couple of idiotic overthinkers?”
“I guess so,” Akaashi laughs as he runs a hand through his dark, messy locks.
“Do you mind if I grab us some cups of coffee so we can catch up?”
“I can’t let you pay for my coffee, Y/N.”
“Okay, how about this: I’ll get us coffee and some pastries right now and then you can treat me to dinner sometime this week?” you suggest with a playful glimmer in your eye.
Akaashi takes no time in answering, “Sounds like a date.”
You don’t say anything in response. You simply smile broadly then cheerfully bound towards the counter to place your orders and, as he waits for you, the weight of your exchange finally hits Akaashi. Surprisingly, though, he doesn’t feel flustered. Instead, there is a sense of peace within as he watches you from across the room.
Because there is something about him being with you right now that feels right.
Akaashi Keiji
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mineral Green
So calm and quiet, toned down and cool in a way that pacifies everything around him. Green suits him in the way it suits a pine forest; peaceful and serene but so full of life bristling in every detail of it. To the eye, he is cool and collected and the presence that calms everyone else, but within that, he is complex and there is so much life hidden beneath the underbrush.
Suna Rintarou
Tamarillo
This color radiates energy; toned down, but certainly energized beneath that exterior. Dark, but not threatening in a way that’s inviting instead of repelling. The color of passion and stage lights and power. The warmth of red paired with the dimmed aspect embodies him: chill, but ready to reveal the energy coursing through him at any moment.
Sakusa Kiyoomi
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lemon Chiffon
Soft and clean. Certainly closed off or isolated and often firm and impenetrable, stern yet somehow simultaneously (and almost unnoticeably) gentle. A warm vintage aspect that makes him seem mature, as if he had lived dozens of lives in one, yet fresh and young. A color of conflicting duality that shouldn’t make sense yet somehow does, because he manages to pull together these differences into something uniquely him.
PETRICHOR — AKAASHI KEIJI
Tumblr media
+ meet cute, no warnings | 1.5k
Tumblr media
as the first week of June slowly passed by you figured the long stretches of spring days full of rain and cloudy skies had come to a close.
everyone had already quickly grown accustomed to the warm shift in the coming summer air, so much so that everyone seemed to develop the need to go outside.
even as annoying as the newly crowded sidewalks were, you couldn’t blame them. the chills running down your arm as the sun softly kissed your skin were different than in spring, it brought a comfort you’d been craving for some time now.
the comfort was fleeting though. you’d gotten too situated in the comfortable embrace of summer that the notion to check any changes in the weather before you left your apartment slipped to the back of your thoughts.
when the first drop landed on your arm, you paid no mind to it, barely able to feel the nuisance at all. it wasn’t until another touched your cheek that you turned your head up, a soft sigh escaping you on instinct at seeing the dark clouds smothering the sun.
“damn.” that was all you had time to say before the short warning of rainfall was over.
if you hadn’t been caught out in the downpour yourself seeing the way people clambered to find some sort of shelter would've been funny. it was almost still amusing, bringing just a touch of a smile to the corner of your lips.
a sharp coolness breaking over the sidewalk sped up your pace and chills found their way down your arms once more.
there was plenty of room for you to slip under one of the many restaurant patios you passed by to wait out the rain, but with another glance at the brewing clouds, you doubted it would end anytime soon.
you figured it would be much easier to make it to the café you’d originally had planned on going to. it was earlier than the time you’d be meeting your friend, but you didn’t really mind.
it only took you a few minutes to reach the cafe, and much to your surprise the rain hadn’t gotten you all that wet, it was the cold you were seeking solace from. you hadn’t dressed for anything cold.
thankfully you were greeted with warmth once you stepped through the doors, and almost immediately your shoulders relaxed at the comforting aroma drifting throughout the lobby.
“can i help you?”
you blinked a few times, eyes wide as you stared at the barista. in your haste to escape the rain you’d completely forgotten any sense of what you usually ordered.
“um..” your eyes scanned over the menus lined above the pastry case but it was as if you were trying to read a foreign language. the silence was nearly suffocating as you gave the barista an embarrassed smile.
“i recommend the brown sugar milk tea. it’s really good.” a voice sounded from behind you and for a moment you thought it was a gift from the gods to save you.
“oh-that actually sounds pretty good.” you tilted around to see who the voice belonged to and you nearly froze again. he was so pretty.
“i figured you’d want something warm, you’re shivering,” he stated matter of fact and it drew a small laugh from the back of your throat.
“ahh.. yeah i got caught in the rain.” your hand rubbed the back of your neck trying to tame the growing heat creeping up your neck and you turned back toward the barista. “i’ll get a brown sugar milk tea then.”
“make that two actually.” the boy stepped up next to you now and before you could say anything he pulled out his wallet. “my treat.”
“you don’t have to do that.” you shook your head at his offer despite a small smile tugging at your lips.
“it’s okay, i want to.” he smiled softly, head tilted to the side a bit as he looked at you and you swore you almost felt your knees go weak. “would you like to sit with me for a bit?”
“sure.” you nodded, following him to one of the tables. as you sat down you noted his clothes looked dry, it was weird, you swore he’d come in after you. “did you make it in before the rain hit?”
he shook his head, holding up an umbrella you didn’t remember seeing before as his answer. another quiet laugh pushed through your lips, what were the odds.
it only took a few moments for the barista to bring the drinks over. the smell of the tea wrapped around you before it was even set down, it almost felt like a warm hug.
“this looks so good... thank you for the drink-” you started before the words caught in the back of your throat, “i’m sorry, i didn’t catch your name.”
“it’s akaashi keiji.”
akaashi’s smile was even gentler than before but his voice held a twinge of amusement now.
“well, thank you for the drink, akaashi.” you smiled, taking a small sip of the tea. he was right, it was delicious and just what you needed to fight the lingering chill.
it was odd how something as simple as some rain or a warm drink could change your whole mood in just a few seconds. you didn’t really know why he offered to pay for you drink, but it wiped away any ill feelings the change in weather had brought upon.
“you’re welcome, y/n.” akaashi spoke after a moment, and you felt your heart jump in your chest slightly.
“i was just going to introduce myself, how did you know my name?” your eyes grew a bit wide as you racked your brain for any memory of meeting him before, but you knew you’d remember someone like him.
“is that your friend over there?” he nodded toward the direction of the door and sure enough your friend was standing in the same spot you had been in before, soaked to the bone from rain. “she yelled your name right when she walked in, waving at us.”
you weren’t sure how you missed it. maybe you’d been too enamored by akaashi’s simple but beautiful presence to notice anyone else. when your heart skipped once more in your chest as a bright yet soft laugh sounded from him you know that was the case.
“did you see how the rain stopped right when i got in?” your friend whined as she made her way to your table and you could only shake your head in answer. “ugh, will you come to the boutique next door with me so i can get something else to wear?”
“of course.” you could tell she was solely focused on how drenched she was as she didn’t even acknowledge akaashi when the two of you stood from the table.
“i need to be going too.” akaashi started, gathering his drink and coat before he smiled at you once more.
“thank you again for the tea, it’s really delicious.” you picked up your drink as well glancing toward your friend as she was already heading toward the door. “shoot i have to go after her, it was nice meeting you.”
you stood frozen for another moment, not able to move from your spot when akaashi smiled once more. there was something about him that you couldn’t shake off.
“here, i have i feeling you might be needing this.”
glancing at the umbrella in his hand you couldn’t help the laugh bursting from your chest at his offer.
“thank you.” you said for what seemed liked the thousandth time. taking the umbrella you tucked it safely at your side as you both headed out the now propped open door.
the coolness from the rain still lingered in the air, fighting the warmth from the sun as it broke through the lingering clouds.
the smell outside was so different than inside the cafe, it was still sweet, but lighter and earthy. it was soothing as the freshness mingled with the deep sugary aroma from the tea as the steam wrapped around you.
“i appreciate it, but what about you? will you be okay if it starts to rain again?” you asked looking up to the clouds with hesitation, you had no idea if it would clear up for the day or not.
“i’ll be alright, i work just down the block.”
akaashi’s eyes flicked to his phone for just a moment before he looked back to you.
“i have to go, it was really nice meeting you y/n.” his voice softened as he tilted his head to the side some with a grin, “hopefully i’ll see you around the cafe again.”
before you could say anything else he picked up a call, nodding his head at you as he turned in the opposite direction. leaving you with your heart beating just a bit faster than before.
as you headed toward your friend with a lingering smile you could barely hear her calling your name as a soft rumbling broke across the sky and you couldn’t help but grip the umbrella’s handle a little tighter.
"Overtime"
timeskip! Akaashi Keiji x gn! reader
Fluff, Established Relationship
By: admin sugawala 🪐
You are avoiding Akaashi for good 30 minutes now after having a misunderstanding between the two of you. He has been coming home late, staying longer than he should have after work.
You trust him. But your overthinking eats you making yourself doubt if he was actually getting an overtime at work or just simply cheating.
Akaashi has been glancing from you from the couch to your form laying at your shared bed. Your husband never wants to leave a fight unresolved so he was hesitant to talk to you but at the same time wants this fight to end.
You finally felt parched after silently crying, purposely facing your back from the door so that Akaashi won't see or hear your muffled cries.
You get up from the bed and swipe away the dried tears from your cheeks. You walk pass your husband who is reading your body language and desperately wanting to talk to you.
You got yourself a glass of water to satisfy your dry throat.
Suddenly, a pair of arms wrapped itself around your waist as he put his chin on your shoulder affectionately. "I'm sorry my love. If you think I'm spending time with another girl, I don't. I just stayed a little more at work for additional salary."
You finally face him. You never actually want to ignore him but you needed space especially that you have trust issues. "I'm sorry Keiji. I'm sorry for ignoring you. Just text me next time if you went overtime so I won't be worrying about you and your safety." you said with a frown on your face.
"Yes, I understand my love." He sighs as he saw your annoyed face before kissing between your eyebrows making your frowning face fade away.
"I love you, okay? Remember that."
“The Rainbow Bridge”
Miya Atsumu x Reader, Kuroo Tetsuro x Reader, Akaashi Keiji x Reader (2.8k wc)
⚠️WARNING (PLEASE HEED): Hurt, mentions of pet death, grief, bereavement, comfort
REQUEST: I have to put my dog down today sadly, so I’d like it be comfort for that topic
A/N: I received this comfort request and while my requests are closed I had to write it. Losing any pet is more than losing the animal - it’s losing the family member who is there for you and will never judge you. I just want to warn that this is REALLY sad (I cried writing it) - so please do not read if mentions of a pet passing away is going to trigger you.
Tumblr media
MIYA ATSUMU
Atsumu loved your dog nearly as much as you did
And honestly some days you weren’t sure if it was YOUR dog or his
(But of course it changed when you both moved in together and your dog became our dog)
She was an old girl, going blind in one eye, and had a bad limp, but she was your baby
She was there for you when you were sad, she ran through the tall grass and brought home a collection of sticks on walks
It was years of joy and companionship - maybe even more than what Atsumu gave you
That joy tripled when the long walks had the addition of Atsumu racing your dog down the path, or solitary snuggles became cuddle piles with you, Atsumu and your dog together on the couch or bed
But life moves on, we grow older, our bodies change
And because life is cruel, your dog’s painfully short time on Earth had come to an end
It was the most difficult decision you had to make - the vet offered surgery to prolong her life, medication that would maybe make her joints ache less
But you knew it was her time
When you had set the appointment with your vet, you immediately called Atsumu after - he thought you’d been shot when you just started sobbing on the phone
But as soon as he realized what happened he left practice early, claiming a family emergency, and raced home
He would skip practice until the day of the appointment, being a solid presence at your side and spending as much time with his precious baby as he could
(Part of you always hated how much Atsumu played up his love for your dog over you, but you also knew that he needed this time to grieve)
The day finally came - one last drive together, a short visit inside, and then you and Atsumu were on your way back to an empty apartment
Opening the door to your shared apartment was worse than you had imagined.
Besides your eyes being bloodshot and your nose rubbed raw - the silence you were met with was agonizing. No quick footsteps racing to the front door. No happy barks and tail wagging. The emptiness in your home almost matches the emptiness you feel in your chest, and more tears spring from your eyes.
“It’s okay honey,” Atsumu gently ushers you inside, helping you take your jacket off and remove your shoes. He closes the front door, locks it, and leads you to the couch to sit. You go automatically, no energy to complain.
Atsumu has been the best support for you. He let you spend as much time with your dog the as possible, handling the cooking and cleaning and organizing. He cleared out your dog’s bed, toys, food dish - anything that would remind you of your best friend. He was quiet and thoughtful and what you needed.
You wish you could say you were the same for him - especially since he too is taking the loss hard. But your head is filled with pain and sadness, your heart too heavy to care of anything else.
“Here,” Atsumu comes back into the living room, handing you a mug of tea before sitting down with his own. A box of tissues appears on the coffee table and Atsumu doesn’t hesitate to grab a few from the box and keep them in his hand.
“You don’t have to hold them for me,” you murmur.
“I don’t mind,” Atsumu says back just a quietly. “It may also be for me too.”
More pain pangs at your heart and you turn to face your boyfriend. His eyes have been red-rimmed since waking up this morning, a persistent sniffle plaguing his nose.
“I’m sorry,” you say earnestly. “I haven’t been the partner you need right now, especially since you’ve been so kind and helpful to me.”
“Don’t apologize Y/N.” Atsumu meets your eyes with an intense look, only diminished by the grief in his own eyes. “I had the honor of knowing your dog for the past few years, but she was - is - your baby. It’s not going to be easy. And besides, having you here by my side has helped more than you could ever know.”
His words - their meaning, his gentle voice, the arm he puts around you - brings another batch of tears and you feel the sobs building in your throat. Atsumu moves to take your mug, set it on the coffee table, and pull you into his arms.
“It’s okay,” he whispers as you cry against him. “It’s alright, this is hard. I’m so sorry.”
They sound like empty words but you hear the hurt in his voice. And you understand what he means by having him close to keep you together. It won’t automatically heal the hole in your heart, but it’s a start.
KUROO TESTSURO
The passing of your pet cat hit you and Kuroo hard
You had both found him, a tiny little thing, sad and alone and crying
Kuroo immediately went to him, while you checked to see if a momma cat was hiding anywhere
But after chatting with the shop keeper she informed you that the momma cat hasn’t been seen for three days now
That’s all the information Kuroo needs before he scoops up the little black ball of fur, gently wrapping his raincoat around him, and bringing him home
And the rest was history - a history of Kuroo napping in sun spots with your cat, buying a backpack to take him on walks (a leash did NOT work), importing special treats from other countries
Kuroo and him were inseparable - you loved your cat too, but he would instantly leave you and wind himself around Kuroo’s legs the second Kuroo entered the room
You have many pictures in your phone of Kuroo and your cat playing together, and your shared apartment was littered with toys and catnip and a cat tree, proudly assembled by Kuroo himself
(Who justified your cat’s behavior when the animal took to the boxes the tree came in, as if he didn’t spend 2+ hours assembling the monstrous piece)
In Kuroo’s eyes, his cat could do no wrong. He’d defend his “son” forever
Until the day came that your cat passed away
He wasn’t young but it was still far too soon - and adjusting to a life without him was difficult
Kuroo was there for you at every step with a tissue and a hug - you couldn’t imagine how hard it must be for him also
And yet he was keeping himself fairly well composed
He wasn’t emotionless, but he focused on taking care of you and transitioning to a world without his shadow
It was admirable, but you knew sooner or later he would break
You’re not sure what made you wake up, but as soon as you heard the faintest of sniffles you were wide awake.
What is that? Your sleep-addled brain couldn’t place the sound - it wasn’t until you heard a quiet sob that you realized what was happening.
You sat up in the dark, reaching out for your partner Kuroo. Under your grip he froze, sniffling loudly.
“Y/N?” From his tone you could tell he was holding back tears - his usual lazy drawl was clipped, and the low pitch in which he spoke at was higher.
“Tetsu,” you whisper, turning so you’re closer and able to wrap an arm around his wide shoulders. It’s the simple touch that brings Kuroo to tears, and he sags against you instantly. His sobs, nearly silent before, double in their volume as he falls apart against your chest.
“It’s okay,” you whisper, petting his bed head as he continues to cry. “Let it all out, it’s alright.”
“I miss him,” Kuroo cries. He’s clutching at your shirt desperately, his tears soaking through the material. “I miss him so much.”
The anguish in his voice is a lance to your heart, and you feel tears form in your own eyes. Not only from missing your feline friend, but also from how much your partner is hurting right now.
“I do too,” you tell him. Your sentence is punctuated with a sniffle. “I miss coming home to him yowling like we were gone for years, or when he would try to trip us up until we lifted him.”
Kuroo choked back a sob. “Or when he would track kitty litter across the house, or vomit in my shoes.” His voice breaks on the last word, and it takes a second before he speaks again. “Even when he was a little shit he was the best.”
You hum, kissing Kuroo’s temple as you continue to hold him. “He was our shit, but he was also sweet and cared for us.” Another soft cry from Kuroo brings one of your hands to his hair compulsively. “And I know that he loved us just as much as we loved him. That’s why it hurts so much.”
Tears start to flow down your face, but it’s nothing compared to the fresh cries that Kuroo lets out at your words. And while you both sit in bed, crying and holding each other, you know that nights like tonight will come again. Maybe it will be Kuroo crying, maybe it’ll be only you. But you promise now to be there for him, as he’s always been there for you.
AKAASHI KEIJI
It’s been a rough few weeks since losing your dog
Akaashi has done everything he could to make you feel better - prepping meals, holding you, spending time outside of the house to keep your mind occupied
Even his best friend Bokuto Koutarou came over to spend time with you - Akaashi was sure that an afternoon with the bombastic man would cheer up even the saddest man in the world
But ever since you lost your furry companion, you’ve been different
Akaashi would never ask you to return to normal at his convenience, knowing that a traumatic experience and loss can change people forever
It just hurts that you seem to be going through the motions, and there’s nothing that he can do about it
You’ve told him several times that he’s doing plenty, but that’s not enough for Akaashi
It’s not until he comes across something on the internet that he gets an idea
See when you came home from the fated vet appointment, the first thing you did was box everything up that belonged to your dog
The leash hanging by the door was gone, the pet bed, dishes for food and water, the toys - everything packed away to be donated or thrown out
Even some photos tacked to the fridge were taken down - Akaashi was too scared to ask whether or not you had thrown them out
He guessed that this was your way of moving on…but it was as if your dog never existed
And it was like you were trying your hardest to let go of his place in your heart also
It broke Akaashi’s heart, and he hoped that his idea would truly start the healing process
“I’m home,” you call into the apartment. Akaashi sits in the living room, holding a slim package in his hands. He left work early to pick up the gift, and he was actually terrified to give it to you.
“Keiji?” Akaashi can hear you hang up your coat and deposit your keys in the bowl by the door.
“In the living room,” he says gently. His voice carries to you, and soon enough you cross the threshold and join him on the couch.
“I’m surprised you’re home this early,” you note as you sit down. You lean into his space and press a soft kiss to Akasashi’s cheek. “I thought you had a tight deadline for this week.”
“I spoke to my boss and was able to move some things around - I have something important to give you.” Akaashi passes the parcel to you, waiting for you to hold out your hands before handing it off. You look down at the package, then back to Akaashi. There was clear confusion in your eyes, and Akaashi only nods towards the gift instead of proving any context.
You carefully open the package, reach a hand inside and pull out a sturdy wooden plaque. Akaashi catches a brief glimpse of reflective material before you turn it over. Akaashi intently watches your face as you take in the inscription. When you read what’s inscribed on the reflective side, tears well in your eyes and quickly fall down your face.
Akaashi reaches over with a hand and holds yours tightly. You look away from the plaque, surprised and hurt and eyes full of conflicting emotions.
“Have you ever heard of the Rainbow Bridge?” He asks you quietly, gently. You shake your head, and Akaashi watches as more tears fall from your eyes. He gives you a small smile, and looks down to the plaque where he commissioned an artist to engrave the Rainbow Bridge poem into a rainbow metallic surface. Below the poem is a small illustration of your dog being hugged by you.
Akaashi leans closer, letting your lean into his side, as he reads the inscription.
“Just this side of heaven is a place called the Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to the Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
“All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
“They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
“You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
“Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together.”
Akaashi finishes reading, wipes his own eyes and leans over in time to grab the plaque from your hands before you dissolve into sobs and fall into his open arms. Your body is wracked with sobs, and Akaashi can only hold you close and bring a soothing hand to your head.
“I’m not crying because I don’t like it,” you get out through your tears. “I’m crying because I’m really really sad and this was really really b-beautiful.”
“It’s okay,” he tells you. “Neither of us are particularly religious so please forgive the allusions. But it’s been hard, and I thought this would be a nice way to remember him.”
You sniff before leaning away. Akaashi meets your wet eyes, and somehow is able to give you a small, watery smile. “It’s really nice. I’ve been so scared to let him go, but this will remind me that I don’t have to let him go.”
Akaashi returns your smile and brings you in for another hug. “You can take as long as you need to grieve, but I’m glad you like it.”
You nod and hug Akaashi back. Together you both sit on the couch, still weighed down by your shared grief, but comforted with knowing that your pet is running in a field, sleeping in a sun spot, happy as they can be, waiting for you to join them.
END
Tumblr media
A/N: I did not write the Rainbow Bridge poem. It was one that was shared to me when I had to say goodbye to my childhood pets. It’s been five years since I had to say goodbye and I still get emotional thinking about what a good companion my dog was. I am not religious, but I take comfort in knowing that I was able to give my dog the best life he could ever have, and he too gave me the best life. 💛
Hi!! Can you please please please write something with weird reader x akaashi? Have a lovely day ♡
Keiji smirks as two arms snake around his neck and gently pull him close, your lips pressing to his head, then ears, where you playfully bite the lobe gently.
“I want to gnaw on your bones,” you whisper into his ear.
“Yeah?” He asks, dog earring his page before closing the book and setting it to the side. He spins in his seat to face you. “You’re feeling that intense about your affection?”
“Of course.” You round the couch and make a move to plop on his lap; his arms instinctively wrap around you, and his lips press a kiss to your temple. “You’re just so pretty today, Keiji. Pretty everyday.”
“Thank you, baby,” he coos, his kissing moving down your cheek then jawline. You mewl and squeeze him, smushing his face against you. “Ow.”
“Sorry. Had to be done.”
“You had to squish me?”
“Yes,” you purr, pressing kisses to his cheeks as compensation for hurting him. Your hand comes up to grip his cheeks, pursing his lips out for you to kiss. “Mwah.”
“Mwah,” he returns.
“Mwah!”
“Mwah.”
“I’m gonna bite you.”
“Please don’t-“ his words are cut off as you bite the squish of his lips, not hard enough to make him wince but enough to playfully bite. “Thank you for being gentle with your feral behavior.”
“You’re welcome.” You plant one more kiss to his lips before hiding your face in his neck, letting the scent of his warm skin lull you to a state of relaxation. “Love you, Keiji.”
“I love you too, baby.”
SKIN TO SKIN ღ
ft. timeskip! keiji akaashi
cw : fluff. domestic intimacy. mentions of bare chests. petnames ( sweetheart, my love ). @omitea for yousss :3
wc : 771
Tumblr media
it’s a quiet night in the shared house of you and your husband. the warm sun has just descended down the horizon, lighting up the night sky with a bright moon and shining stars.
you lay in your large bed, trying to steady your breathing and close your eyes, but to no avail. you rustle in your sheets every few minutes, unable to shake off the unbearable question that’s been fleeting your mind, unsure of how and when to ask it.
akaashi is sat up in your bed, back propped up by a pillow and legs covered by your linen duvet. he’s reading his latest book, hands holding the spine ever so gently when he turns the pages with a lick of his thumb. the bedside lamp illuminates the dark room, cascading onto his face with a golden light. it’s only 8:00, and your husband looks just as beautiful as he always does.
there’s a thought that’s been eating away at your brain, and you really didn’t know how much longer you could take it. you just wanted to feel him, as close as you possibly could, which is what led you to open your mouth and start speaking.
“ keiji. ”
his ears perk up at the sound of your voice, eyes still focused on the book when he responds.
“ yes ? ”
how should you say it ? would it sound too straight forward ? what if it made him uncomfortable or…
“ take off your shirt. ”
oh. well that’s not what you were supposed to say.
“ oh ? ” is what keiji remarks, head now turned to you with his glasses hung low.
“ i mean— um… nevermind. ” you sigh in defeat, crinkling the covers by your nose to hide yourself from his curious gaze.
“ what’s the matter, sweetheart ? something bothering you ? ” he questions ever so politely. if only you could describe what exactly you were trying to ask.
“ no keiji… i just… wanna feel you. please ? ”
akaashi looks at you for just a moment, probably trying to understand exactly what you wanted. but this is your husband, the kind hearted, notable keiji akaashi. so of course, without another question, he removes his white t-shirt with not so much as a second thought.
you’re unsure of your next move, taking in the appearance of your husband. his lean figure lays before you with open arms, and the soft abs on his stomach relax with every breath he takes.
your fingers dance at the hemline of your own shirt, pinching it between your fingers as you dwindle on what to do next.
“ my love. ”
you’re shaken out of your reoccurring thoughts when keiji calls out to you, reaching toward you to beckon you closer. his nimble fingers smooth along the slightly exposed skin of your stomach, hand reaching underneath to lay on your hip. his fingers travel up and up, lifting your shirt slightly. he stops for a brief moment, eyes meeting yours when he asks,
“ do you want this off ? ”
it only takes a nod of your head for keiji to lift your shirt by the hem, removing it and exposing your naked skin. your eyes darted away from his, either from shyness or embarrassment, you weren’t sure.
“ come here, it’s alright. what are you shying away from ? ”
keiji moves you until you’re on his lap, bare chests pressed together in sheer silence. your shoulders relax, a content sigh releasing from your mouth. you can feel his heart pump against your own, hearing it in your eardrums at every beat.
his tender touches from his fingers tingle when he slides them against your spine, holding you ever so closely. his book is long forgotten, sitting on the nightstand with a neatly tucked bookmark on his previous page. his glasses lay atop the bridge of his nose, small red indents from where they used to rest on his eyes. he’s so soft, so gentle that it has you ready to almost doze off.
“ i love you, keiji… ” you whisper, drowsiness evident in the soft spoken words you relay to your husband.
keiji hums as he continues to stroke your back, “ mm, of course… it’s because i have my shirt off, isn’t it ? ”
“ keiji ! ” you suddenly say with a gasp, softly shoving his arm in feigned offence. he chuckles under his breath, continuing with his featherlight touches as you lay with him, skin to skin.
“ i love you more, my love. ”
RAINY DAYS! - AKAASHI KEIJI
summary, akaashi helps you on a rainy day.
— mutual pining, minor swearing, fluff, akaashi being a geek in love
Tumblr media
they say that rainy days are the best way to see someone's love for them. at that moment, their love would be displayed to the public and everyone can see how much they love one another.
even if they shared an umbrella, there would be a certain angle where someone would be more exposed to the droplets instead of the other one.
and it was obvious that akaashi keiji displayed love for you.
Tumblr media
you looked at the grey clouds that are coming your way, your hands on your hips as you examine them. multiple coulds are nearing and indicates that they bring a huge storm.
a sigh escapes your lips as you crossed your arms, thinking wether to wait for the rain to stop or just run to the nearest store that are a couple blocks away. you should've watched the weather forecast this morning before going to work.
and then it hits you. you left your clothes to dry out on the balcony of your apartment. crap— and it seems like you can't be going home right now.
"something on your mind, (y/n)?" a familliar voice asked you to which you turned around.
a small smile forms on your lips to show that you're alright, although it's quite evident that it's faux.
"i forgot my umbrella and it looks like heavy rain is coming" you muttered to which he just nodded and walked towards you.
"you can borrow my umbrella, if you'd like" he says, voice coated with worry. you shook your head and flailed your hand.
"no, it's fine! how are you gonna go home if i take your umbrella, akaashi?" he pushes the bridge of his glasses and crosses his arms.
"we could go together, if that's fine with you?"
he really wanted to blurt that sentence out but the words got stuck in his throat. he wants to have a chance at helping and getting closer to you!
ever since you both started working here together, he's had a teensy little crush on you which eventually grew and drove him crazy. he's never felt like this before and he's so nervous right now.
he opened his mouth to talk but he gets nervous. what if she thinks i'm weird? what if she already has someone else? what if—
"but if you don't mind, maybe we could go together? you can just drop me off at the nearest store! i wouldn't want to bother you" you said sheepishly and he thanks the heavens that you were the one who said that instead.
"of course it isn't bothering me, i'd love to" he says with a small smile.
Tumblr media
crap.
how the hell did his umbrella got stolen? he could've sworn he put it in the basket with the other umbrellas but right now— he's looking at an empty basket.
he examined further, maybe it was buried deep inside the basket? nope it wasn't. he sighed and watched you looking at the rainy clouds. suddenly, an idea popped up.
"(y/n), i have another idea but it might be a little crazy"
which led to this.
"just a little more (y/n)! i can see 7E from here!" he whisper yelled as he ran with you to the 7E with him holding his jacket on your figure.
"ugh, you try to run in heels!" you pouted but ran anyways. he almost lets out a laugh when you whined in complaint.
maybe to some people the action of running together in the rain is stupid. maybe it was sweet.
but to akaashi keiji, he thinks it was the best rainy day that ever happened to him. he doesn't mind being drenched in the pouring rain if it means he gets to be your knight in shining armour.
he doesn't mind letting you use his jacket (which he offered in the first place) as an umbrella. he doesn't mind running together with you in the rain.
both of you walked into the convenience store, drenched. you laughed and before he realised it, he's smiling too at your laughter.
"thank you, akaashi" you mumbled and he just gives you a small smile in return. "keiji" he mumbles to which you raised a brow.
"call me keiji" he says, again with a small smile and red cheeks.
Tumblr media
the whole running in the rain act was worth it, even if it meant he had to take a sick leave the next day and rot in bed.
especially when you came for a visit and gave him your handcooked chicken soup that's perfect for headaches.
