In a recent post, “Whisky from the ‘Land of Rising Sun” we have told a brief about the history of Japanese whiskies, how it got started, who started and when?
We also have mentioned how it a gaining a name across the world especially with the year old ones. In this post, we would like to introduce a few of the best Japanese Whisky that has been in the front for its quality taste. Several famed aged expressions are to be discontinued, while the craft distilling movement continues to rise in Japan, with new distilleries announced each month. This year has also delivered many exciting new bottlings, many of which sold out immediately. After all, Japanese whisky is still at its peak. From blends to single cask bottlings, here are some of the most exciting Japanese whiskies of 2018.
YAMAZAKI PEATED – ESSENCE OF SUNTORY

Suntory’s new whisky series-the Essence of Suntory was one of the most surprising introductions of 2018. The 3 expressions launched on February 27th, delivered in unique bottles and featuring labels very different from any others in the Suntory whisky portfolio. In keeping with the artistic designs, the liquid stands out. The Hakushu Rye type delves into rye whisky, a category not often explored in Japanese whisky, while the 16-Year-Old Chita bottling remains one of the oldest releases by Suntory’s grain distillery. The Yamazaki Peated, however, is the most balanced, complex dram of the three, taking a smoke, earth, and peat and fusing it with sweet honey and fruit. Bottle at 49% ABV and aged for 12 years, this is highly recommended. Yamazaki seldom releases peated expressions.
KOMATAGATAKE DOUBLE CELLARS SINGLE MALT

This single malt comprises of vintages matured at Hombo Shuzo’s two whisky distilleries, Tsunuki in Kagoshima and Mars Shinshu in Nagano. The liquid was distilled at the Mars Shinshu distillery, but with maturation taking place in very different climates, this is one of the most interesting releases by the company – it allows drinkers to taste the results of aging in different climates. The nose brings notes of ripe peaches and mangos, followed by toffee, vanilla, and subtle pineapple on the palate. This marked a great start of the year for one of Japan’s most loved small distillers.
MOONGLOW LIMITED EDITION 2018

The Wakatsuru Saburomaru distillery is a small, passionate whisky producer in Japan. While they only produce whisky part-time (sake making takes place in the colder months) they have created a handful of wonderful expressions. The Moon Glow First Release was named the best Japanese Limited Blended Release at the World Whiskies Awards 2018. Considering the award, it was no surprise that the new Moon Glow 2018 sold out so quickly. The bottle went on sale at the end of May, with only 6,000 bottles available at 43% ABV. Comprising of whiskies aged 10 to 20 years, the blend delivers depth and complexity, in keeping with the stellar reputation of Japanese blended whisky.
KARUIZAWA EMERALD GEISHAS

Following the hugely popular release of the Karuizawa Golden Geishas by the Whisky Exchange, yet another set of exciting casks was released this year – the Emerald Geishas.  One of the bottlings was a 33-Year-Old sherry cask. At 54.4% ABV the cask yielded just 170 bottles. The second was a 35-Year-Old bourbon cask. Bottled at 59.1%, it yielded 265 bottles. The Whisky Exchange released the bottles via a ballot that took place during the beginning of February. Japanese whisky retailer, dekanta, did the same for their Karuizawa – The Cities of Japan release. Demand for Karuizawa whisky is immeasurable and price is no object for collectors. The Whisky Exchange ballot was put in place to make the allocation fair. Needless to say, the bottles vanished instantly as collectors the world over added yet another magnificent bottling to their collection. A great investment, as the Whisky Exchange’s Karuizawa casks are said to be some of the best out there.
MARS SINGLE MALT KOMAGATAKE 27-YEAR-OLD

The fourth instalment in the gorgeous Le Papillion series by Mars Shinshu. This one is named after the H.Glaucippe Liukiuensis butterfly, which is depicted on the bottle. The expression went on sale from June 1st to June 3rd, with sales taking place during certain hours of each day. With just 182 bottles available, the latest bottling in the hugely popular series sold immediately. The whisky was distilled at Mars Shinshu in 2014 and then aged in a bourbon barrel at the company’s Yakushima aging facilities, where spirit matures faster due to the warmer climate.
THE KIKOU – EIGASHIMA 2011 PORT ELLEN CASK FINISH

Released on June 11th by Japanese spirits retailer, dekanta, the Kikou bottling was distilled at Eigashima’s White Oak distillery (maker of the Akashi Single Malt range) in 2011 and then matured in a cask previously holding whisky from the legendary Scotch whisky distillery, Port Ellen, which shut down decades before. The unique maturation beautifully brings the Japanese and Scotch whisky categories together. Bottled at 58.4% with just 300 bottles available, this is the first private label bottling by the company. The nose delivers peat, smoke, and spice before a subtle floral, maritime influence joins in on the palate.
ASTA MORRIS CHICHIBU 6-YEAR-OLD BOURBON BARREL

By the renowned bottler, Asta Morris, comes a Chichibu 6-Year-Old single cask bottling, matured in a first fill bourbon cask. At 60.6% ABV expect a kick, but like most Chichibu whiskies the high ABV doesn’t take away from the balance. Bert Bruyneel, the Asta Morris head, only selects the very best whisky casks, and recently, rum casks to add to his portfolio, a fact proven once more in this stellar Chichibu release. White fruit, creamy vanilla, cinnamon and summer spice define the nose and palate. The finish keeps going with warm spice and juicy grapes. The release date was on May 22nd, 2018.
NIKKA BLACK RICH BLEND EXTRA SHERRY

The most affordable whisky on the list, the Nikka Black Extra Sherry is the latest addition to Nikka’s domestic best-selling range, Nikka Black. Released on May 29th, over 100,000 bottles are being sold across Japan, both in stores and online. At around $20 per bottle, however, numbers aren’t expected to last long. The addition of more sherry aged vintages brings extra complexity to the whisky, and offers more depth, compared to the other expressions in the Nikka Black range. Nowadays, such an enjoyable and affordable whisky, by one of Japan’s largest whisky-makers, is a rare sight. Another release, the Nikka Deep Blend Extra Sweet recently went online, expected to drop in September 2018.
HIBIKI BLENDER’S CHOICE

Last but not least, Suntory recently revealed a new addition to their Hibiki blended whisky range, the Hibiki Blender’s Choice. The new blend arrives on September 4th, in 700ml bottles, at 43% ABV. According to Suntory, the bottle will roll out domestically, sold mainly at bars and restaurants across Japan. The Hibiki Blender’s Choice is the third NAS whisky to be added to the Hibiki core range, following the Hibiki Japanese Harmony and Hibiki Japanese Harmony Master’s Select. With the addition of a few wine-cask matured vattings, the new blend will deliver a well-rounded, soft depth that has come to define the ever popular range.
