Why are rain frogs so round? What's /inside/ of them around such an itty bitty skeleton?

So it turns out this is a really interesting question.

The first thing we must be aware of is that rainfrogs as we see them in videos of them squeaking are not quite the same shape as they are when at rest:

But you are quite right, they are very round. This is exemplified by the skeletal photo you refer to:

So what are we seeing?

Well, firstly, note that the body cavity in these frogs actually envelops the femurs, such that only the tibiofibula (fused in frogs) and the tarsals and metatarsals are outside the body. The arms are quite similarly enveloped, but a bit of the humerus does extend outside the body cavity too. This predisposes them to a rounder body shape.

Next, note the ilia - the U-shaped bone in the pelvic region. These in some breviceptid frogs are synostotically fused with the sacrum - that is to say, they are bound by bone-based connections to the bow-shaped vertebra at their tips. This whole joint seems to be quite smooth, and as a consequence, the back of the frog is quite smooth. The other thing we can see here is that the urostyle (i.e. the frog version of a coccyx) juts quite far beyond the ischium and pubis. This extends the body cavity beyond the hips. Note also that the pelvic girdle seems to be largely below the spine, rather than the typical position for frogs behind it and continuous with it. This makes the legs sit below the spine, rather than at its end, enhnacing the vertical roundness of the animal.

Next, let’s talk some soft tissue. Now, I’m not as familiar with soft-tissue in frogs as I am their skeletons, so you’ll have to bear with me a bit (rawr). Beddard (1908!!) studied the soft tissue of Breviceps verrucosus Rapp 1842. It seems that the majority of the body of these frogs is actually muscle. Beddard noted that muscles join the leg at the knee that extend into the body cavity, such that the inclusion of the thigh in the body cavity is further accentuated by musculature. The rectus abdominalis muscle is unusually large, extending from the lower abdomen up and around the sides of the body. Indeed, this large size appears to be the pattern with all of the major muscles, though in the throat the typical arrangement of large and small muscles is somewhat reversed. On the lateral side of the head, there is a substance that is not muscle, but appears to be loose tissue in which sits what is apparently the thymus gland.

There is a very large gap between the end of the urostyle and the anus (one fifth of the total length of the frog), in which there are almost no muscles, save for the one surrounding the lower cloaca. On either side of this area, between the posterior-most muscles of the thigh, lie two large ‘lymph-hearts’, as described by Beddard. These are between one quarter and one third of the total length of the frog. A further lypmh-sac sits between these lymph-hearts and the skin of the femoral region, and they are thus probably analogous to the femoral lymph-sacs of other frogs.

I find it interesting that Beddard (1908) did not mention any glandular formations in the dorsal region. As is evidence from many images (see below), these frogs are able to secrete a white, sticky, noxious substance from their skin (which they actually have to use during amplexus, as the male is too small relative to the female to mount her properly, and so he sticks himself to her with his glandular glue… kinky).

These glands do not apparently take up a great deal of the cutaneous tissue, and so I suppose are of no consequence to the size of the frog, especially relative to its enormous muscles.

The diet of these frogs consists almost exclusively of hymenopterans and isopterans (ants and termites). Neither of these insect groups are particularly fatty, so it is little surprise that their bodies appear to contain no large fat deposits - fatty bodies extend from the gonads up to the lungs and heart, but these comprise only a tiny fraction of the frog’s mass, and don’t contribute to the round shape. Instead, their bodies are extremely muscular, allowing them to be adept burrowers, ideal for their fossorial lifestyle.

So TL;DR: rain frogs are little balls of muscle (maybe the largest muscle mass relative to body mass of any vertebrate? science just doesn’t know).

Just a story with my sso oc and her horse, I might continue this but no promises

The sun rose over the tall trees of Mistfall, warming the dewkissed grass and mossy stones. Songbirds slowly broke the early morning silence with a ballad for a new day, and soon again the woods were full of life. I had always loved mornings like this, when I could just sit in silence until the world caught up to us again.

The kettle let out an angry wheeze, signaling the water was ready for coffee. A brief stretch later I got up again and took the kettle off the campfire, then put my frying pan on the grill. "Now.. What to make for breakfast", I muttered to myself, trying to remember what I had remaining from last week. "There's a few eggs left, perfect."

I had just finished my breakfast when the static of my radio hissed on. "Sparrowhawk. Sparrowhawk, do you copy?" I fumbled a little trying to get the walkie-talkie off my belt, "This is Sparrowhawk, loud and clear sir. Over." "We have a report of a lost rider and horse somewhere in the deeper Wildwoods. Can you help us on the search? Over", I grabbed Quicksilver's neck rope and my bags while he was talking. "Copy that, where were they last seen? Over", I respond. "According to the source, they left Firgrove yesterday afternoon in order to cross the Northern Gorge before nightfall. They were headed to a town east of Wildwoods but she has since lost contact with them. Over." My heart dropped when I heard that. I hesitated a little before responding. "Copy that. Sparrowhawk, over and out." Two long and two short whistles, our emergency call. Hopefully Quicksilver would show up soon, but while I still had time it was best to restock my saddlebags. My gut told me this was gonna be a long ride.

After packing extra rations I heard the sound of familiar hoofsteps approaching. Quicksilver rustled out of the bushes just as I turned to greet him. "I came as soon as I could", my friend said. It was obvious he was a bit out of breath from galloping here on such a short notice. "Thank you", I pat him on the neck and offer him an apple, "Sorry to wake you, the rangers called me. It's serious". Quicksilver perked his ears at me, busy chewing on his apple. "Someone's lost in the woods, they might be at the Northern Gorge." I could see him stiffen as I said that. "You're kidding, right?" Quicksilver whispered and finished his treat as quickly as possible. Meanwhile I fetched his tack from the fence and laid the saddle on his back "No, we need to leave right now", I muttered while tightening the girths. Once I was done Quicksilver walked over to the rocks to wait while I put my jacket on, and I wasted no time getting on. "They left from Firgrove, let's see if you can find their tracks." "On it, boss!" he snorted, and we took off. part 2

OC lore: Alexei's mother's horses

Al's childhood home is located 1 km (0.6 miles) outside Dundull. They have a stable that can house 10 horses. Mrs. Sparrowhawk gets most of her income from leasing horses & stalls, and organizing guided trail rides.

Apollo

24 y/o Finnhorse stallion

Gentle & quiet under saddle, breaks every stallion stereotype. Alexei's main horse from age 10 until she moved out. He does have a habit of breaking out of his paddock, but he has (miraculously) only gone missing once. Has earned some prizes in cross country and endurance competitions, but never properly learned to jump higher than 70cm (~2ft). Imported from Finland as a 3 y/o when Al's mom moved to Jorvik & used to be up for stud when he was younger.

Weleho

30 y/o Finnhorse gelding

Mrs. Sparrowhawk's ex competition horse. Eager to please in the dressage ring, and spicy enough to score in showjumping. A little grumpy but a sucker for treats. He's now retired from heavy work, only leading the occasional light trail ride. Imported from Finland as a 9 y/o.

Steffy

18 y/o Shire gelding

Rescued from a killpen as a 2 year old. Mrs. Sparrowhawk's first project horse in Jorvik. He's a bit skittish and spooky without a buddy, but extremely kind and willing.

21 y/o Dartmoor pony mare

Bought to be Alexei's first lesson horse, and served them well until Al switched to Apollo. Very speedy and has a big personality that's easy to fall in love with. She has now been doing trail rides for 8 years and enjoys every bit of it.

15 y/o Icelandic Horse gelding

Little trickster that oozes "pony energy". He was bought at 8 years old from a family that could no longer care for him. Nothing too special, just a reliable and fun trail horse.

Timpani

17 y/o Appaloosa Mule gelding

This one's a long story. Alexei was chosen for the Redwood Point Ranger-scouts, and due to the rough terrain of Wildwoods everyone is required to have a Ranger approved horse. Apollo would have been perfect, if he hadn't been missing at that time. So, a bit reluctantly, Al went to see what they had for lease, and ended up picking Timpani for his smooth gaits and hardy nature. A few years later the Rangers put him for sale, and Al's mom bought him for trail riding.

Zappy

6 y/o Black Forest Horse mare

Mrs. Sparrowhawk found her in an auction, and immediately fell in love with how kind and curious she was. She ended up being quite expensive, being a rare breed in Jorvik and all, but she was worth every shilling. She has very elegant and light movements, and Mrs. Sparrowhawk is shaping her to be a dressage champion.

"Quizzy?" The young stallion perked his ears. "You're a Warrior right? I don't think I've ever seen you with them though," I continued. He didn't seem too pleased with that question, simply kept silent. I didn't push it, he seemed tired after today's hike.

We had come back home to Dundull in order to round up supplies and run some errands before winter. I could smell the salty sea air seeping in through the stable doors, a nostalgic smell. The owner of this place was an old friend of my mother, and let us stay in the stable if we happened to be in town. Having contacts pays off in the long run, and at least on a dry day it was better to sleep here with Quicksilver than to go home.

"I suppose I am", my friend groaned, bringing me back from my thoughts, "Not that any of them would call me that". I was about to ask what he meant but he kept talking: "I was raised there, on the plains in the mountains. My mother was the quiet sort, and while she was with the herd in order to teach me their ways, once I was old enough she went back to the marshes I was born in and hasn't been with the Warriors since. And I never knew my father at all", he had a strange longing in his voice, pausing a while after every sentence. "I was smaller than all the other foals, even those months younger than me. Never got to hear the end of that", Quicksilver sighed and chuckled a little, "But no matter how hard I trained they never took me seriously. Most of them are shallow like that. So I ran away and not long after, I found you". "You mean I found you", I smirked at him. "hmm no, I clearly remember you crying about getting lost in the woods", he snapped back smugly. I simply laughed.

He was right, when we met I had gone exploring further than I should have been. It was a misty evening and the woods had seemed extra mysterious, and I was a little rascal with no sense of danger and a heart set on adventure. It wasn't long past the ranger outpost until I couldn't find my way back anymore. As the night started falling and panic finally kicked in, I suddenly found myself crouched against a boulder with a curious yearling sniffing my face. I still remembered the utter shock when I realized I could understand him perfectly, something I had only heard in old druid tales. I had been around horses my entire life but I had never seen anything like him before, so wildly curious and clever. I don't think Quicksilver had ever seen a human before that, he didn't spook at all, simply inspected me. He hadn't learned to be afraid. Even when I reached for him he only sniffed my hand before leaning into it. Teary eyed, I told him I was lost and scared.

After that, the memories get hazy. He led me out of the woods and back home safely, and my mom was surprised and a little displeased that I had come home so late, not to mention bringing a strange horse back from the woods. After somehow convincing her that I didn't steal Quicksilver, she miraculously let him sleep in the paddock.

"Now your turn, why do you never go back home?" Quizzy inquired, bringing me back to earth. I sighed deeply, it was a tough question. "Well, I guess it doesn't really feel like home, more like a cage. My mom never really understood me or why I wanted to be out all the time", I finally answered. I looked out of the window, the moon casting it's pale glow through the dusty glass. "I do miss Apollo and Jam from time to time", I sighed. "We should go see them some day", Quicksilver mumbled into the straw, "They're better company than the boneheads for sure." "Maybe tomorrow", I said and yawned, "Goodnight buddy." Quicksilver looked comfortable laying in the soft straw. I have him a couple pets on the shoulder, then got up and climbed onto the hayloft.

Tonie & Phoenix and their horses

Tonie's horse, Jello (fn Jellybean), is a Dartmoor pony rescued from a killpen. Rescued here meaning that one night Tonie and a bunch of likeminded friends went to Jorvik city harbor & broke free a shipment of horses that were to be transported abroad for slaughter. She's a mealy light bay mare with messy & long tail and mane, and she also has a dorsal stripe. Nobody knows where exactly Jello came from, but what they do know is she's the textbook case of a naughty pony and has a very human-like sense of humor. Whenever someone else tries to ride her she doesn't really listen, or at worst finds the fastest way to get rid of them. Tonie simply put up with her tricks until she eventually softened up, and now she doesn't want to be without her. Jello is insanely protective and has the guts of a goose, which make her very reliable in most situations despite her small size.

Meanwhile Tonie.. is kind of a lost soul. She came to Jorvik to study and get away from her home, "broaden your horizons" and all that, and when she was done she just didn't know where to go after, so she moved to Firgrove after hearing the stables there were looking for employees. Easy money & a place where she could keep Jello close. Her apartment is the upper floor of an old log cabin, just a small bedroom and a kitchen but it leaves enough for her to live comfortably. The stable pays her enough to live on but she does freelance photography on the side for extra cash.

Tonie's average height, roughly 160cm (5'7"), and a little fluffy but not insecure about it. Her hair is naturally red although she does dye it darker every now and then, and she wears loose and plain clothes with the exception of the occasional band shirt.

Tonie has high functioning depression. She's doing just fine all things considered, she just never thought of what she wanted to do in life and got stuck on that. She's keeping herself together for Jello, but she's also painfully aware horses don't often stay healthy past their twenties so it's very bittersweet. She keeps in touch with her friends from university, but most of them live far away so she doesn't get to see them very often. On the darker side, Tonie sometimes goes on weeks long drinking binges, usually around the winter holidays when it's cold and dark outside.

Phoenix Winding is, simply put, a butch lesbian in her early 30's. She's tall and imposing, wavy umber hair in a tight bun, minimal makeup, dark business casual clothes. She takes herself seriously, sometimes to a fault. Not that she doesn't have a reason, she is a respected dressage judge and trainer, and gets offers from all over Jorvik. Her home is in Silverglade, where she has a private stable for all her projects and client horses, as well as the one horse she's determined to keep.

Karakum. A mysterious Akhal-Teke exported from outside Jorvik, said to be directly descended from the last known Turkoman horses. She's almost completely black, exept for a white band that goes around her neck 15cm below her head. Nobody is sure whether it's a weird marking or an old scar. She's a gentle horse, but very sensitive when riding, making her challenging to train. Phoenix wanted a challenge, and is now slowly but surely shaping Karakum to be the next dressage champion.

While I'm thinking of how to continue the "unnamed oc story", here's some notes of the AU world, for future reference for myself & whoever is interested

Story differences: Almost everything in Jorvik is like modern canon, with one major difference: Garnok was defeated roughly 100 years ago, (or at least thought to have been defeated) by a combination of Aideen's magic and the fires of Ashland. The Soul Riders & druids still exist and practice magic, dealing with Garnok's remnants and aiding people in need.

Then, due to unknown causes, two noteworthy Soul Riders go missing and the volcano of Ashland begins puffing out dark smoke. World differences: Wildwoods is massive, covering almost the entire central Jorvik and reaching to all sides of the mountain range. Civilization is concentrated on the coast due to inland being difficult to travel. The island is split in sections due to the massive mountain range that houses a volcano at it's peak, Ashland, which is visible from all of Jorvik. Dino valley too is a lot higher up than in-game.

One location already mentioned, Northern Gorge, lies the northern part of southern Wildwoods separating it from Dino Valley. The river coursing through it begins high in the mountains and ends in Valedale Lake. Due to having sparser greenery and leading in a near straight line to towns in northern Jorvik, it was a popular route before the Jorvik Rangers barred travel through Wildwoods. While it has it's dangers, it is remarkably safer than trying to brute a way through the thick forest.

Alexei Sparrowhawk (sona) Half Finnish, half Jorvegian, born in Dundull, had a pretty average small town childhood full of eating bugs and exploring the woods. She grew somewhat estranged from her mother due to them having differing opinions on the future. She works as a Jorvik ranger and due to her deep affinity with the wilderness she does primarily survey work deeper in Wildwoods than anybody else wants to. She also keeps tabs on the Jorvik Wild Horse population and plans to write a book about them. She lives most of her days in a small camp by a cave in the cliff face, and on the hill above there's a fire tower.

Alexei once adopted 5 fledgeling Jackdaws, who she named Luna, Stelle, Sol, Fulgur, and Lux. Luna ended up being the only male of the bunch, and Lux is leucistic with a very faint, creamy color. They are all now grown up but like to hang around her camp and bring her trinkets from time to time.

Irina Kaamos Alexei's mother. Finnish woman who grew up in North Karelia. Moved to Jorvik to start an equestrian business, then got married to a local. Runs a small-ish stable in the outskirts of Dundull, where she raises horses and organizes trail rides and longer hikes for locals and tourists alike.

Frederik Sparrowhawk I don't know much about him aside that he's Alexei's father, he's a sailor and spends most of his time out at sea. He likely grew up in Goldenhills and later moved to Jorvik city. Like most Jorvegians, love of horses runs in his blood.

How Alexei's parents met is a bit of a mystery, but I think what's most likely is Frederik's ship stopped to unload in Dundull, and they bumped into each other in a cafe, maybe literally and he accidentally spilled some coffee onto Irina's clothes, and he gave her his number and told her to call him on the day they would be in Jorvik City so he could properly apologize.

Tomie Axemoor British Indian background, grew up in London, came to Jorvik for university and ended up properly immigrating after graduation. She has a degree in history that she hasn't managed to do anything with yet. She lives in Firgrove where she makes ends meet by working at the stables. She makes a little extra money taking and selling photos but it's not much. Kind of an otaku. Occasional alcohol abuse to drown out the meaningless of life.

Quicksilver Jorvik Wild Horse mix stallion, grew up as a Warror and lives in Wildwoods, the usual. Kind of an underdog in his herd due to most Warriors being rather large and him being mixed with a smaller breed of horse, to which the others just thought he was a runt. Met Alexei as a yearling and lived in Dundull a bit, then once Alexei started living in Wildwoods full time he came with her and is her go-to horse. They can talk to eachother because cool horse island magic powers, but he's the only horse Alexei can understand. A bit naïve and hotheaded with a deep bitterness towards the other Jorvik Wilds, but he has a good heart when it comes to people.

Jellybean Tomie's rescue horse, a bit larger than breed standard Dartmoor pony mare. Back when Tomie was just finished with university, her and her friends got a hint about a kill-buyer horse shipment that had been delayed and they decided to break down the fences. The operation was kind of a mess but they managed to round up a few horses at a nearby stable, and one of those horses was Jellybean. She was thin but otherwise healthy, and she's part of the reason Tomie moved to Firgrove, as one of her friends had connections and a few other rescues were moved there. Jellybean is rather grumpy and lazy, and the vet estimated her to be almost 20, so she spends most of her time on pastures or walks enjoying life.
