Ala Ebtekar, Thirty-Six Views of the Moon (from the San Jose Museum of Art)
Cyanotype prints on found book pages exposed to moonlight.
Thirty-six Views of the Moon is a collection of night exposures, left from dusk till dawn and exposed by moonlight on book pages from texts referencing the moon and night sky spanning the last ten centuries. Working with photographic negatives of the Moon from the Lick Observatory archives in Northern California and treating each book page with Potassium ferricyanide and Ammonium ferric citrate (cyanotype) to make the surface of the page light-sensitive, the pages are then exposed overnight by the UV-light emitted by the moon. The work takes its cue from a poem by Omar Khayyam that imagines us as the objects of the Moon’s omnipresent gaze and, in response, produces a vignette of windows on the Moon that abstract the typical celestial gaze, merging galaxy with ground to collapse space and time. Castaways.
Mike Bam. Ghalamdar. Ala Ebtekar.
Broadway @ 3rd St in Oakland, Ca
Castaways. This mural on Broadway at 3rd St in Jack London Area of Oakland is a collaboration with Mike Tyau Bam, Ala Ebtekar and Ghalamdar. . . Mike set the framework with the sweeping color strokes for the calligraffiti by Ghalamdar with Ala Ebtekar straddling the fence possibly doing both. For me the mural tells a story. I see floating boats at the base with a dagger and crown in the air. And the mural may well tell a story because Ala Ebtekar is about stories. . . Bam (Mike Tyau) has a long history in the SF Bay Area writing and painting murals and evolving. He is constantly learning and experimenting with different forms of making art. When he isn’t doing that he is mentoring students and managing projects. . . Ghalamdar was born and raised in Iran where he painted graffiti with the Elf Crew and developed his wild style calligrapy. He currently resides in the UK. . . Ala Ebtekar is a Bay Area native born to Iranian parents who gave him deep roots with his heritage that had a major impact on his art and the direction of his teaching. In his teen years he was influenced by hip hop and graffiti and spent a lot of time as a DJ. He always had a knack for drawing and found it to be his passion and course of study. He currently teaches at Stanford. . . . The first time we became aware of Ebtekar was his Ascension art on a billboard on Brannon St in 2012. We serendipitously met him a few years later at a book presentation where we spoke of our common interest. It was he who caused me to purchase a black book for artists to write in. If you like Persian art his 2007 interview on FFCG site is a must. His art too is constantly evolving. He has art on display until 2/25 at @Gallery16 on 3rd and Bryant in San Francisco

Luminous Ground : An Artist Lecture by Ala Ebtekar
Description of lecture: Ala Ebtekar’s presentation will examine his forthcoming work “Luminous Ground” at the Asian Art Museum’s new expansion slated to open later this year. The newly commissioned site-specific work will span 55 feet across the museum’s new Art Terrace and will consist of 1,800 handmade ceramic tiles made from California soil treated and exposed by sunlight over the course of a year to reflect an image of the cosmos. The artist talk will also examine what it means to make art in an age of uncertainty, amidst war, conflict, and social injustices.
ABOUT Artist: Ala Ebtekar (b. 1978 Berkeley, CA) is an artist who has situated his art practice as a relentless leveling, exploding, and collapsing of time and space to bring steadying attention to the contemporary moment. His work frequently orchestrates various orbits and cadences of time, bringing forth sculptural and photographic possibilities of the universe and time gazing back at us.  Ebtekar’s recent investigations have created liminal experiences to longer notions of scientific duration and the phenomenology of light.

Blog #2
Ala Ebtekar is an American-based artist, researcher, and educator who lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.He is known primarily for his work in painting, drawing, and installation that explores the juncture between history and myth, forging a multi-faceted project that melds science, philosophy, mytho-literary traditions, and pop culture together. He has been teaching at Stanford University since 2009 in the Department of Art & Art History and Institute for Diversity in the Arts at Stanford. We,both, grew up in a different era than today. That era was very much about multiculturalism. I completely can find my persian culture  in Ala's works. It is obvious that art is worth in any  nationality, so that you can be creative everywhere. It is so promising for me in the USA  when I see how much Ala's works are valuable and famous. It makes me so happy and I remember a lots of persian drawings, painting and stories. Therefore, I enjoy of Ala's works when I see them.
