I feel like I could write roughly ten thousand words about my newly formed and extremely complex relationship with Amsterdam, given I only spent six hours there and two of those were in the train station. I have three or four posts in my head about it, from "Why is every indoor space in this city kept at roughly the boiling point of Tungsten" to "The Nice Things That Happened To Me In Amsterdam" to "That Time Someone Stole My Stroopwafel" but I think you all will be most entertained by the fact that I have a new feud, and it is with the entire Rijksmuseum.
I've been in museums that were a bit crap and museums that didn't interest me and even museums like today's that were physically uncomfortable, but I have never so hated a museum as I hated the Rijksmuseum by the time I left it.
And it's not the Rijksmuseum's fault! Yes, there are issues with the museum's physical structure -- the insane number of stairs and lack of lifts, the fact that the thermostat could be turned down from "temperature of the sun" to "next door to hell" if they wanted, the bizarrely poor lighting -- but not all of those can be fixed, and they're clearly doing their best. Plus it was mad crowded. But I've been in crowded, poorly-designed spaces before and always found something to love. There was nothing for me in the Rijksmuseum.
So I don't think it's the museum itself. I think that museum and I have some kind of spiritual feud. I think the museum feels actively malevolent to me in a way few buildings ever have because it hates me, personally. I don't know why -- could be to do with my Dutch ancestor who left Amsterdam (the infamous Mennonite Pirate) or perhaps it knows my heart truly belongs to the Art Institute and this is spite. In any case, it may think it has won, but I'm retreating strategically. Someday I will come back to Amsterdam and I will fight the Rijksmuseum and we will settle this once and for all. Bicycles will undoubtedly be involved.
I will eventually do a post about the lovely things I did in Amsterdam, including the grocery store (also kept at the melting point of steel, unfortunately) and Albert Cuyp Market, where I got the stroopwafel (eventually) and bought a nice new bag, and even the genuinely best part of the day, where I walked down a side street to Sarphatipark and discovered that Amsterdam is really very beautiful and quiet if you step off the main roads. @rumtastique I have to apologize for being mortal enemies with the Rijksmuseum but as mentioned in comments you did absolutely save my life when I consulted my notes from talks we'd had about Amsterdam and took advantage of all your good advice (particularly the advice about having cash on hand). (Josh, I didn't get to the bakery you recommended but I really wanted to. I'm keeping it in my notes for next time.)
Still, while I will make those posts, I have been awake since 3am and that's part of the problem, so I'm going to set an alarm to wake me before we reach Paris, and sleep until then.
This isn't over, Rijksmuseum. And next time I'll come prepared: I'll wear a tank top.

hope you have a lovely time bee, you deserve it :))

Hi hedgehog!! I waited to answer this till I left Amsterdam so I could give you my full experience recommendations lol
We were supposed to have two full days in Amsterdam but due to our flight out being cancelled and rescheduled we ended up only having one so we didn’t do as much as we wanted to. But we went to the Rijksmuseum which is this gorgeous and huge art museum that I absolutely loved, but definitely only go if you’re into art museums lol. We also wanted to go to the Van Gogh museum which is right by where the Rijksmuseum is but they were sold out for the day we were there so if you wanna visit buy your tickets ahead of time
We also went to a very cool flea market called the Albert Cuyp market! Lots of neat stuff for sale and walking over there we found a few vintage clothing stores which were very fun to browse through. It’s a very pretty area in general with lots of shops so I highly recommend it
Also word to the wise: coffee shops in Amsterdam do not sell coffee, that’s where you get weed. You gotta search for cafes on your google maps if you wanna find coffee in the morning when you’re half asleep 😭 this morning we went to a cafe near our hostel called Latei that I ADORED. It’s a small place with really cute decor, and as someone who genuinely likes the taste of coffee and doesn’t like it to be super sweet, the coffee was so good. I also had a croissant with cheese and tomato on it and it might be one of the best breakfast sandwiches I’ve ever had highly recommend

Amsterdam Adventures: A Guide to the Netherlands’ Cultural Hub
Tumblr media
Amsterdam, the vibrant heart of the Netherlands, is a city where history, culture, and modernity blend effortlessly. Known for its picturesque canals, world-class museums, and laid-back atmosphere, this city has something for every traveler. As I embarked on my Amsterdam adventure, I was excited to explore its famous landmarks, discover hidden gems, and immerse myself in the unique charm of this Dutch metropolis.
Morning: A Stroll Along the Canals and a Dive Into History
My day in Amsterdam began with a leisurely stroll along the city’s iconic canals. The early morning light reflected off the calm water, and the narrow, centuries-old houses lined the streets like a scene from a painting. I wandered through the Jordaan neighborhood, known for its artistic flair and quaint cafés. Each turn offered a new discovery, from hidden courtyards to boutique shops filled with handcrafted goods.
Next, I made my way to the Anne Frank House, one of the city’s most poignant and historical sites. As I walked through the small rooms where Anne Frank and her family hid during World War II, I felt a deep connection to the past. Her story, immortalized in her famous diary, is a powerful reminder of the strength of the human spirit. The museum not only tells her story but also serves as a broader reflection on the atrocities of war and the importance of tolerance and understanding.
Midday: Artistic Treasures and the Museum Quarter
After the somber yet meaningful visit to the Anne Frank House, I headed to Museumplein, home to some of the world’s most renowned museums. My first stop was the Rijksmuseum, a treasure trove of Dutch art and history. As I wandered through its halls, I was captivated by masterpieces from the Dutch Golden Age, including Rembrandt’s The Night Watch and Vermeer’s The Milkmaid. Each painting told a story of Amsterdam’s rich history and its cultural significance on the world stage.
Nearby, the Van Gogh Museum offered a glimpse into the life and work of one of the world’s most famous artists. Walking through the galleries, I was struck by Van Gogh’s vivid use of color and his emotional intensity. From his early works to his more well-known pieces like Sunflowers and The Starry Night, the museum provided a deeply personal insight into the mind of the troubled yet brilliant artist.
Afternoon: Biking Through Vondelpark and Local Markets
No visit to Amsterdam would be complete without experiencing the city like a local—on a bike. I rented a bike and headed to Vondelpark, the city’s largest and most famous park. Cycling through its leafy pathways, I passed ponds, sculptures, and families enjoying picnics. The park was a peaceful retreat from the bustling streets, offering a chance to relax and take in the natural beauty of Amsterdam.
Feeling energized, I ventured to one of the city’s lively street markets—Albert Cuyp Market. The vibrant atmosphere of this market was infectious, with vendors selling everything from fresh produce to Dutch cheese and stroopwafels. I couldn’t resist trying a freshly made stroopwafel, its warm caramel filling a delicious treat as I continued exploring the market stalls. The market was a perfect reflection of Amsterdam’s diverse and multicultural vibe, with foods and goods from all over the world.
Evening: Exploring the Red Light District and Canal Cruise
As the sun began to set, I made my way to one of Amsterdam’s most famous and controversial areas—the Red Light District. Known for its unique blend of history, nightlife, and culture, this district is much more than meets the eye. I walked through its narrow streets, taking in the curious mix of old churches and neon-lit windows. The district also has a wealth of bars, restaurants, and hidden gems like the Oude Kerk (Old Church), Amsterdam’s oldest building.
To cap off my day, I boarded a canal cruise, the perfect way to see the city from a different perspective. As I drifted along the canals, the city’s bridges and houses were illuminated by soft lights, casting a magical glow on the water. The gentle movement of the boat and the quiet of the evening offered a peaceful end to a day filled with exploration. The canals of Amsterdam are a UNESCO World Heritage site, and seeing them from the water truly highlighted their beauty and significance.

WEEK 7: AMSTERDAM
Hallo everyone!! The end is so near, and I’m starting to feel very sentimental about leaving my host city of Prague. As our final trip together, my roomies and I headed to Amsterdam. I spent most of this past week in this amazing, vibrant, and perfect city, so this blog is dedicated to my experience in Amsterdam!!
With four Eurail pass days left, I made the (horrible but money-conscious) decision to train from Prague to Amsterdam. So 14 hours and 3 train transfers later, I arrived on Wednesday morning. Right off the bat, I was stunned by the layout of the city with rivers cutting through, the endless amount of bikers, the stylish fashion on the streets, and the diverse selection of restaurants and shops. I knew that biking was big in Amsterdam, but I was shocked to learn how bikeable the city was, with bike lanes existing on every street and the right-of-way favoring cyclists. Biking also cut our travel times to anywhere very significantly. From one place to another, walking might’ve taken around 30 minutes; tramming would be around 20 minutes; and biking was a pleasant 5 to 10 minutes.
On Wednesday, we explored the city and got our first taste of Amsterdam’s vibes. We went to Foodhallen Market for lunch, shopped around for a bit, and then chilled out in Vondelpark. Vondelpark is a picturesque and massive park that really exemplifies how lovely Amsterdam is. There were families playing games, couples enjoying picnics, ducks swimming in ponds, friends laughing and bathing in the sun. For dinner, we biked over to Linguini Jordaan for a delicious Italian meal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We woke up early on Thursday morning to get bagels and iced matchas. There are so many cool museums in Amsterdam, and the first one we hit was the Rijksmuseum. The collections of Vermeer paintings, miniature dollhouses, realism works, and Asian art caught my eye. The highlighted Van Gogh exhibition was also a great prelude to our Van Gogh Museum visit the next day. After shopping until we dropped again and making a pit stop at the Albert Cuyp Market, our reservations to a French restaurant called our names. Fresh oysters, grilled asparagus, a lamb steak, and a few glasses of wine revived me before we biked over to the river for a boat cruise. Our canal ride gave us a tour of the city’s rich history and beautiful sunset views.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On Friday, we had another jam-packed day of more food, museums, and shopping. A huge highlight of this day was the Van Gogh Museum; it was probably one of the best art museums I’ve ever visited. Not only were his paintings beyond amazing, but the sheer volume of how many he painted in his lifetime, the layout of the whole museum, and the special exhibitions on display were just as impressive. Compared to the other cities that I’ve traveled to, Amsterdam easily takes the top spot for the most expensive place. In hindsight, I should’ve budgeted a little better for this trip, but I think that all the souvenirs, clothes, foods, and tickets that I bought here were well worth it. Checking my bank account on Friday hurt my soul a little, but it quickly passed with some Korean fried chicken and a loaded fruit bingsu dessert (this dinner satisfied my desperate cravings for Korean food).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We filled Saturday with a visit to the Anne Frank house, a 15+ mile bike ride through Amsterdam’s countryside, and an authentic Dutch dinner at ‘T Heemelrijck. The long bike ride allowed me to reconnect with nature and appreciate the beautiful scenery straight out of a storybook. It also gave me another reason to love Amsterdam: biking just 15 minutes outside of the city center takes you to a whole other world. On Sunday, I grabbed an Italian sandwich to prepare for my 20 hour trip back to Prague. One bus and two trains successfully brought me back at 5 AM Monday morning.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After spending five days in Amsterdam, I have come to the conclusion that I love this city so, so much. If I were to do another study abroad semester in the future (which is very likely), Amsterdam is definitely up there. Besides the high prices, I felt like the city was very liveable with lots of things to see and do. I would love to find myself in this city again, but for now, I will soak up the last bits of Prague for this final upcoming week!
