Deercember Day Three: Eurasian Elk | By In the Pond
The Eurasian elk (Alces alces), also known as the moose in North America, is widespread globally, with populations in Europe, Asia, North America, and possibly New Zealand. Much of their energy is derived from terrestrial vegetation, mainly consisting of forbs and other non-grasses, and fresh shoots from trees such as willow and birch. Given these terrestrial plants are low in sodium, as much as half of their diet may consist of aquatic plants, including lilies and pondweed, which while lower in energy content, provide them with sodium. They are not grazing animals, but browsers who carefully select foods with low fiber and high nutrient concentrations, and have consequently developed a digestive system to accommodate a relatively low-fiber diet. Unlike most ruminants, they cannot digest hay, and consuming it can be fatal. More information here.
