Il volume accompagna la mostra omonima, in cui vengono presentati oltre duecento tra mobili e oggetti realizzati tra il 1981 e il 1986 per la collezione Memphis. Memphis è stato un collettivo italiano di design e architettura fondato da Ettore Sottsass, attivo tra il 1981 e il 1988 e affermatosi come uno dei massimi esponenti della scena postmodernista degli anni 80 del XX secolo. La fondazione del collettivo fu il risultato di un lungo percorso iniziato all’Olivetti di Ivrea, dove Ettore Sottsass aveva incominciato a coordinare la progettazione alla fine anni cinquanta, e proseguito e approfondito con le ricerche nell’ambito dell’architettura radicale negli anni sessanta e settanta a Firenze e in Europa. Ma la visione di Memphis era propositiva. Aggirava le posizioni critiche della poetica radicale che aveva funzionato da incubatrice per le nuove proposte confermando in modo esplicito un desiderio di cambiamento e aggiornamento del linguaggio non solo milanese ma internazionale.

Sottsass & Grawunder’s models
Ettore Sottsass, born in Innsbruck in 1917, became one of the most influential designers and architects of the 20th century. Fond of radical thoughts and movements, he founded the energetic and flamboyant Memphis group in 1981 and completely changed the design scene in Italy - and in the world.
As Memphis attracted attention, Ettore Sottsass founded an architectural practice and a major design consultancy with Aldo Cibic, Marco Marabelli, Matteo Thun and Marco Zanini. He named it Sottsass Associati. He provided cultural guidance to work conducted by its many young associates. 
Johanna Grawunder, born in San Diego in 1961, joined the firm in 1985 and became a partner in 1989. At the Sottsass Studio, she was involved primarily with architecture and interiors, co-designing many of the firm’s most prestigious projects with Sottsass. The models they worked on together between 1988 and 2003 are incredible objects. Made of plexiglas and polychrome marble, they look like little sculptures and were edited by Ultima Edizione, a marble company located near Carrara.
In 2001, Johanna eventually left the firm to found her own studio in San Francisco and Milan. Sottsass died in 2007 at the age of 90 years but Sottsass Associati continue to carry on the philosophy and culture of the studio. The studio still works with former members of Memphis, including Johanna Grawunder.

Memphis Launched in Milan in 1980 ‘Memphis’ was a design collective that aimed to disrupt the status quo of the design industry. Led by architect-designer Ettore Sottsass (1917-2007) these designers conceived and produced era-defining furniture, ceramics and lighting. These objects disregarded the tenets of modernism and were instead infused with historical and pop culture visual vocabularies. According to legend, in late 1980, Sottsass was in his Milanese apartment with a group of young designers - including radical designer and ‘Alchimia’ member Michele De Lucchi - discussing how bourgeois and irrelevant design had become. Bob Dylan’s song ‘Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again’ (1966) was playing in the background. Together Sottsass and De Lucchi decided to create a collection of new work, full of vitality and in tune with times. They enlisted production work from cabinetmaker Renzo Brugola - a showroom from Mario and Brunella Godani - and financial backing from Ernesto Gismondi, President of ‘Artemide’. Over the years, prominent Memphis designers would include Martine Bedin, Andrea Branzi Aldo Cibic, Michael Graves, Hans Hollein, Arata Isozaki, Shiro Kuramata, Javier Mariscal, Alessandro Mendini, Luciano Paccagnella, Nathalie du Pasquier, Barbara Radice, Peter Shire, George Sowden, Matteo Thun, Masanori Umeda, Marco Zanini and Marco Zanuso Jr. ‘Memphis’s' first exhibition took place on September 18, 1981 at Milan’s ‘Arc ’74’ and launched the group to international notoriety. The provocative, postmodern pieces designed for the exhibition featured bold colours and unconventional shapes; many were coated in mismatched, patterned laminates - a material specifically chosen for its connotation of cheapness. The first Memphis collection included Sottsass’s ‘Beverly Cabinet’, ‘Tahiti Lamp’ and ‘Carlton Bookcase’; Sowden’s ‘Oberoi Armchairs’; du Pasquier’s 1950s-style pink and black textile print; Bedin’s ‘Superlamp’; and de Lucchi’s ‘Oceanic Lamp’. The group went on to hold more exhibitions in London, Los Angeles, Tokyo, San Francisco, New York and Milan. VINCENT VAN DUYSEN WAS BORN IN BELGIUM IN 1962. HE STUDIED ARCHITECTURE AND OBTAINED A DEGREE FROM THE HIGHER INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTURE. AFTER HIS STUDIES HE WORKED IN MILAN UNDER INFLUENTIAL DESIGNER ALDO CIBIC AND THEN ON TO ANTWERP WITH AND JEAN DE MEULDER. VAN DUYSEN IS COMMONLY REGARDED AS A MINIMALIST BUT HE BELIEVES HIS INTERIORS ARE ANYTHING BUT MINIMAL.
