I was reading this fic for the past 4 days or so (it's by @aleteia-ff and it's so good) but the sequel to it is unfinished (which is understandable) and I started going through the comments of the last chapter and I got really pissed off
People have said it before and they will say it again but STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT AN UNFINISHED STORY
Be grateful you even got the beginning of it.
To every author whose work I've read, who I have been friends with, or even who I have tried but didn't like: thank you for taking the time and effort to try and share something so beautiful and personal. I struggle to leave comments because I worry I have nothing meaningful enough to say, but I try my best to comment at least once on everything. Even the stories that aren't my favorites because they are still so important.
As a writer, I know that it's hard to get the thoughts out of your mind and onto a computer in a way that other people understand. It takes SO MUCH time! And I also understand that life gets in the way.
But more than that, I don't think we as readers, as a fandom, should shame people for losing a connection to the story they are writing. If you lost a connection to the piece or the world, I get it, I wouldn't want you to force yourself. I would much rather have an unfinished fic that you enjoyed writing than a finished one that you hated writing.
Stop making people feel bad for an unfinished story. Be grateful you are receiving FREE content.
That's all I have to say ♡

do you have any fic recs for httyd/rtte?
Absolutely!!! I'm so sorry that this is so late lol (I'm gonna keep this restricted to fics that are about the gang for the most part. If there's a specific ship or character or smth you might want another list for, just lmk (I have a LOT of Snotlout lol)) These are all on ao3 btw!!!
These ones are mostly centering around the gang:
The Scars Of The Young by literallyjustanerd
This one's about the gang after httyd 3 just hanging out. A little angsty, but overall pretty positive. Ships are pretty background if I remember correctly
Where the Runaways are Running the Night (Series) by Faye_Claudia
I haven't read this one in a while, but it's a fic series with fic titles pulled from Greatest Showman songs. It's an au where Hiccup leaves Berk with Toothless, and the gang slowly comes over to his side before they stand up to Berk and the Red Death
King of Doing Stupid Things by mysteryninja98
This is some short fluff. The gang is just hanging out. I remember the dialogue writing being pretty in character for this one <33 (rtte time period)
This Story Is for the Birds by Emachinescat
Pretty similar vibe to the last one. Tuffnut finds a hurt bird and the gang nurses it back to health (rtte time period)
Longer fics that have the whole gang in them that I may or may not have not read yet:
A Thing of Vikings by athingofvikings
I've had this one rec'd to me a couple times, and I actually haven't gotten around to it. It's super long, but it's also Rise of the Brave Tangled Dragons if that's not your cup of tea
Phantom of the Arena by Aleteia
I actually have started this one. It's very similar to the Where the Runaways are Running the Night series in that Hiccup left Berk with Toothless, and it centers around him trying to save the dragons of Berk from afar. The writing is amazing and Astrid is so in character. I haven't gotten very far in this one, unfortunately. I read the first few chapters in one sitting though, it's that good. (It's based off of Phantom of the Opera and the chapter titles are pulled from the songs, but as someone who hasn't seen Phantom, you don't need it to understand the fic at all)
Hope this helps <333333

40 questions: 9, 15, 28
9. Which fic has been the hardest to write?
I wouldn't say there's one fic that's been the hardest to write. Sometimes my muse suddenly goes on vacation and doesn't say when she'll be back, that happens to me with basically everything I write that's longer than a few pages. And the longer the fic, the more frequent and longer the vacations.
15. If you could choose one of your fics to be filmed, which would you choose?
Um... All of them? :'D There's one I'm planning on writing that might make a great movie or series. But I guess some of my fics wouldn't make good film material because I often focus on emotions rather than action.
28. Share three of your favorite fic writers and why you like them so much.
Aleteia (on tumblr @aleteia-ff) because she’s very good at getting you invested in her characters and she can build up plot and action and tension so well, you’re going to bite your nails waiting for the next chapter. She’ll make you obsessed with every character, even the villains. Sometimes especially the villains. Because every one of her characters is human, despite of what they might do. Also she’s my friend.
ShipMistress (on tumblr @shipmistress9) because I can always rely on her writing being without any cheap drama or nonsensical plotlines. Doesn’t matter if it’s fluff, angst or simply just smut, her fics are always a good read and reread. Besides, she’s also my friend.
Katergator (on tumblr @katergator84) because all their fics are quality work that I just love to come back to from time to time for a thorough and fun reread. I just love their writing style and the way it draws me in every single time. It’s simply very good writing. 10/10.

Quarantine tag game
Tagged by @shirbertndisney , thank you sweety! <3
Are you staying home from work/school? Yes, normally I would be a kitchen employee at a Theme Park, but they decided to close for the time being and were later forced by the government to stay closed.
If you’re staying home, who’s there with you? My parents and my sister. We have the occasionally fall-outs for being so cramped together, but overall, I feel we’re handeling this pretty well!
Are you a homebody? Depends. I really like being home with family and friends, but lately my parents keep pressing that we (my sister and I) live in their house so we have adjust to their “rules” (more wishes) and if we want to do what we want, we have to move out. So I like being home, but I’d like it to be my home. And I have to go outside regularly, especially to get my vitamin d3. Unfortunately, I’m really susceptible to a winter depression. But when I go outside, I keep my distance with everyone and mostly go walking or biking and reading at a place with nature surrounded.
An event that you were looking forward to that got cancelled? A lot of conventions got cancelled, but I’m not really bothered by them, because there is always next year. My musical theatre production group postponed this year’s musical to next year, which I might not be able to join, which makes me very sad. But I think the big party my parents had planned for their retirement, their anniversaries and the new future they are looking forward to, bums me out the most. It’s not officially cancelled, but they think it’s going to be and they probably don’t want to postpone it.
What movies have you watched recently? I think the last one was either Frozen II or How To Train Your Dragon? I haven’t really watched any movies recently, haha.
What shows are you watching? I was already busy with a casual (read: watch an episode or more when I feel like it) rewatch of Avatar: The Last Airbender and right after I was stuck home I binged Seven Deadly Sins to get a recap before the next season would come to Netflix (although I learned today that I probably have to wait until July/August). When I had really low motivations to do anything, I binged A Letter for the King in one day. But currently I’m busy with Critical Role: C1: Vox Machina. I’m only at the fifth episode, but I’m already so in love with all of the Mighty Nine! I only watch on youtube when I can keep myself busy with coscrafting, so it’s going to take time to get through it, but I don’t mind to have so much content waiting for me, haha.
What music are you listening to? I have three playlists I play a lot at the moment. When I’m working on my current WIP, I have a special playlist for that and when I’m in the mood to listen to it. When I’m reading (either FF or my book) I listen to a playlist that’s called Peaceful Piano. It calms my mind and everytime I feel so many emotions because of the story, the music apparently has the perfect mood for it. And the last playlist is a short playlist with music that’s associated with series of films and mostly music that brings me in a dancing/happy mood! My mom lols everytime I start dancing to the music when I’m cleaning up after dinner.
What are you reading? My current book is Royal Assassin by Robin Hobb. I’m so happy I’m finally continuing the Farseer Trilogy and it’s so good. With fanfiction I’m finally caught up with @aleteia-ff ‘s Phantomverse! I did a reread of POTA and didn’t have had the time to read The Last Snoggletog and her first two chapters of POTA2 yet. Pssst: I really reccommend this series! I’m going to continue to catch up with the rest of the 71 emails my inbox currently has on “unread” from AO3, because, yeah, that’s gotta go away sometime, lol.
What are you doing for self-care? The first week was okay, I was enjoying the fact I didn’t have irregular hours from work anymore. But at the end of the week I spend a whole day bingewatching one series and I really felt that I needed structure back in my life. So make lists for everyday. I want “move” 1 hour everyday (that would either biking or walking, preferably outside) and read 1 hour everyday (I switch between my book and fanfiction everyday. For the rest: from Monday till Friday I plan 1 hour of betaing for a friend everyday and with NaNoWriMo writing is a daily task too. I plan my showers, trying to motivate myself to get up on time from Monday till Friday, cooking for my family is for Wednesdays, plan my washing, coscrafting, etc, etc. My mom noticed immediately that it helped me because I was in a much better mood. And these lists also made me realise I definitely want to quit my job as soon as possible, because I am not made for those irregular hours. I need so much more structure in my life and the job I have right now is definitely not suitable for that.
Excuse the amount of words I used.
If you want to, I tag @aleteia-ff to do it!

*waves* Hoiya! @lunarcrown came up with this awesome venomcup au, and I just had to write something for it! Now I don’t know all the details to this AU, and I’m definitely not the first to write about it (Which I actually just found out. In the middle of writing this drabble I thought “It might be a good idea to look at the HTTYD AU tag to get more info” and... like, you have to go check out @aleteia-ff ‘s fic right HERE. It’s amazing!) So yeah I’m sorry if I got stuff wrong etc, but I hope it’s enjoyable anyhow! <3
Unhinged
Astrid had long since stopped struggling. She wasn’t even sure she could at this point, since her arms were so numb from the men’s tight grips she could no longer feel her fingers. She figured that, the best way to get any information, was to remain silent and passive- for now. She would fight when the time called for it. However, she could still glare, and so she did.
After days of sitting immobile in a cell, it was a struggle to make her legs cooperate as she was dragged down the shadowy halls of the ship. She tried not to make eye contact with the men they passed, but if she did, she let her hatred spill into her gaze. If looks could kill, she was certain the entire army would be dead at this point.
The men laughed and made vulgar comments that made her squirm inwardly. They hadn’t made any moves to touch her- yet. She only hoped they knew better than to try. She might be weaponless, and weak, but she would use whatever means of defense she had. She had teeth, didn’t she? Then by Thor’s hammer she’d bite any man who came near her.
But for now, she hoped remaining cooperative would pay her back in the end. Maybe... maybe she’d stay alive long enough to get out. Long enough to...
to see Hiccup.
She watched and studied everything they passed, keeping her eyes peeled for any hints that he was or had been there. He must be. He had to be. She refused to think differently.
But three weeks. Three weeks. What could they do to one man in three weeks? She shuddered to think.
She’d only been in captivity for three days. Locked in a cell, with nothing but moldy bread and water to keep her alive. They hadn’t even given her a slop bucket.
Heathens. The Hooligans might be rough Vikings, but even they had the decency to give their prisoners a bucket to do their business in. Her hatred was threatening to brim over. She feared she might explode should she even lay eyes on Grimmel. The slimy bast-
Speaking of which.
They rounded a corner, and came to stop at a door. A man standing there didn’t even question their presence. All he had to do was see her, and he nodded, opening the door and letting them pass.
Grimmel stood, back to them, with his hands pressed against the top of a table. He had papers strewn about the table, along with empty vases and dirty glass cylinders. He didn’t turn upon their entrance, just continued staring at the papers.
“My dear Lady.” He spoke without looking up. “A pleasure.”
She gnawed on her gag, nearly choking on her withheld words. She reminded herself to stay silent, not that her words would make it past the gag. Yet still, what a coward to forcefully silence his prisoner. Did he fear what she had to say?
It was as if he had heard her thoughts. Good, then maybe he’d heard the few choice words she had bouncing about her head.
“Ungag her.” He finally turned around, a smug smile pasted on his pale face, his eyes unreadable. He leaned against the table.
As soon as the cloth left her mouth, she spat a wad of spit on the floor, right at Grimmel’s boots. The words came unbidden. “You snake.” She said darkly. She hated how far up she had to look to meet his eyes. It made her feel even more defenseless, a feeling she did not appreciate.
He snorted a laugh. “My lady! You underestimate me. I dare say I like to consider myself on a dargon status.”
She pondered a response, but decided against it. Rather, she heated her glare.
“Now.” He stood and walked to a shelf, where jars of purple liquid lined. She didn’t know how she hadn’t noticed them before. They were chiming as they softly hit against each other with each wave that hit the side of the ship. It was a little hum that played in the background, and accompanied with the purple glow from the bottles, it created an eerie atmosphere.
Grimmel plucked up one of these bottles and uncorked it, letting a fowl stench seep into the air. Astrid squinted, her eyes watering from the fumes. He coughed and recorked it, with a satisfied nod of his head. He continued. “I know why you came here.”
“Did you figure it out by yourself?” She muttered dryly. To her surprise, he laughed.
“Hiccup’s humor must be contagious.” He walked closer, still chuckling. “I wouldn’t have thought you, a warrior or Berk, to know the meaning of sarcasm.”
He fiddled with the bottle in his hands, unconcerned. “Hiccup and I are much alike. We use our brains to get what we want. And if his attitude isn’t the only thing you’ve caught on from him, then I’m sure this is no great recollection.”
It wasn’t. Hiccup’s mind was his weapon, and all of Berk knew it. It’s why they trusted him as much as they did. It’s why she’d believed him those many years ago.
Grimmel began tinkering with a tube of some kind, filling it with the bottle’s contents. And yet, in all of his pointless conversing, he had yet to tell her what had become of Hiccup. It was making her uneasy, for she felt that if he was dead, Grimmel would’ve used it against her by now. And yet, if he was still alive, wouldn’t Berk had gotten a ransom note long before now? Grimmel was just so unpredictable. She couldn't read his behavior, and it was irking her more then she could say.
Finally, he looked up, smiling widely without showing his teeth. It was creepy, and made her uncomfortable. She squirmed where she was held, but the soldiers didn’t loosen their grip.
Grimmel looked past her and nodded, presumably at the guard by the door. She heard the door creak open, followed by shuffled footsteps.
Someone stumbled past her, followed by two burly men. When she saw who it was, she lunged forward, forgetting she was still contained. The men jerked her back sharply, forcing a gasp from her lips. She stared, horrified, struck silent by the shape Hiccup was in. She was too shocked to feel any joy at the fact that “Thank Thor, he’s alive.” for all her mind could focus on was the cylinder fixed at his neck by a leather collar. Her eyes caught the slightest glimpse of glowing purple from within the glass.
He was leaning against the wall, his head wavering, his eyes unable to focus on anything. He was so pale... and, as best as she could see in the little candlelight, his skin carried a slight purple tint. His green iris’s were no longer the beautiful emerald color she knew, but a glowing purple. He blinked hazily, staring at nothing. She saw his legs shake.
“My new weapon!” Grimmel cackled and waved his arm at Hiccup, as if showing off a new toy. Hiccup only blinked, not responding at all. The soldiers stood a few paces back, next to the men who held Astrid, just watching in uncertainty, as if they weren’t sure what to do.
Grimmel walked to Hiccup and grabbed him by the collar of his shirt, dragging him to stand across from Astrid. She involuntarily breathed his name. “Hiccup...” He made no response.
It was killing her to have him so close- close enough to touch- and yet, it wasn’t truly him. She hoped he’d say something, that he’d even look at her, but he did neither. He stared into space through half-lidded eyes, his body trembling. She feared he would tip over at any moment.
Grimmel slapped the back of Hiccup’s head. “Look at her.”
He did, eerily. He looked, but he didn’t see. His gaze went right through her.
“What have you done?” She hissed, raising her gaze to meet Grimmel’s. He grinned and settled a hand on Hiccup’s shoulder, as one would an old friend. He tossed the tube in his hand, which she now realized with horror, was the same cylinder like thing that was fixed at Hiccup’s throat.
“I’ve done what Stoick should’ve done years ago!” He cackled, and began plying the tube from the collar. Once off, he took the needle from it’s end and fixed it on the new one. “Hiccup makes a marvelous dragon killer, Astrid. It’s a shame you underestimated him.”
The tip of the needle disappeared into Hiccup’s neck.

Fandom Trumps Hate 2020
I am proud to announce that I am participating in Fandom Trumps Hate 2020 offering both fic and fan labor!
What is Fandom Trumps Hate?
For full information, please visit https://fandomtrumpshate.tumblr.com/. In short, FTH is an online auction of fanworks, with the proceeds going to charities. I have signed up to offer a work at the auction, and anyone can bid it. If you win the bid, you donate the winning bid to one of the listed charities.
And here’s the exciting part: After showing me proof of your donation, I will write a fic for you based on what you would like. Have a prompt you’d like someone to write? This is your chance. Do you have an idea related to any of my other fics - for instance Matching Scars or Unto Darkness, Starlight - you’d like me to work out? You can ask for that as well! I could only sign up for 3 fandoms to write for, but I’m open to more. Ask me if you have an idea!
Bidding ends February 28 8PM EST. That’s tomorrow!
Bids before and after this deadline will not be counted (more bidding policies). The bidding page, along with the details of what I am willing to commit to, can be found here.
If I bid on your offer, what can I expect you to deliver?
My offers, which can also be seen on the formal bidding page, are the following:
MathIsMagic Auction #1 Organizations this auction benefits: Bidder's choice of any of the listed groups (See full list.) Type of fanwork: Fanfiction Fandom(s): The Witcher, A Song of Ice and Fire, Dreaming of Sunshine by Silver Queen Highest rating: E (Explicit) Length/scope: Less than 5K words Especially interested in: The Witcher: Calanthe, Pavatta and Ciri, as well as Yennefer, Tissaia, and the witches. I'm really interested in ASoIF: The Starks, the Lannisters, more Westerosi AU's and crossovers than stuff going on in Essos. Happy endings for the Starks, the Tyrells, Missandei and the Unsullied. Unwilling to address: I don't do bad guys win (permanently) and I'm not interested in writing Geralt/Jaskier or Jon/Dany. I don't know that much about the wildlings/the others plotlines. In general I'm happier writing various strong platonic bonds, though I can do romance and even smut. Notes: I would love to write a short fic or one off if you have something you're inspired by. We can chat about it and have fun coming up with it and getting invested together if you want. I love talking new ideas and AUs and crossovers. Also family feels. I'm also willing to update/continue one of my current WIPs if someone really wants that instead. Minimum Bid: $5
MathIsMagic Auction #2 Organizations this auction benefits: Bidder's choice of any of the listed groups (See full list.) Type of fanwork: Fan Labor Subtype(s): Betaing, Other: Creating Fanlore Pages; Helping Set up FFnet Forums, Discord servers, etc., helping organize a fandom project, challenge, or event, etc. Fandom(s): Any Highest rating: E (Explicit) Length/scope: I plan on being generous with my time relative to the amount bid regardless, but the more you offer the more I'm willing to do. 5$ is like, basic betaing, but for 50$ I'd do thorough revisions, or set up a whole server for you, emojis and roles and a basic rule structure and all.. Especially interested in: Unwilling to address: I will offer my services to any fandom, but you will probably get more helpful results from me if I know a bit about it. I can't think of any absolute no's offhand. Notes: Mini fan resume: Server Set Up and Modding: Mod and organizer of the DoS FFnet Forums Fandom, DoS Subreddit, and DoS Discord Server. Have set up multiple fandom community pages and events. I have templates for rules and structures and the like that might help someone setting up something new for the first time. Betaing: Have done extensive work Betaing in many fandoms, for fics of all sorts of lengths. Can do anything from cheerleading (positive comments throughout the pieace), to grammar editing, to minor revisions, to being a sounding board for figuring out plot and character beats. Fanlore Pages: Have set up and contributed to multiple Fanlore.net pages. I'm happy to create one for you, your favorite fic, etc. Related: have contributed to TV Tropes pages before, and would be willing to figure out how to create them wholesale for a big enough bidder Fandom Events: Have organized and helped with several small secret gift events, exchanges, and writing challenges. Minimum Bid: $5
Outside of these bounds, you can ask for anything, although I would very much encourage you to discuss your prompt with me first, to make sure you’re not accidentally asking for something I am hugely uncomfortable with, or which I think isn’t manageable to write. Both my PMs and my Ask box are always open!
I am obliged to complete the fic by the end of the year at the latest, but my intention would of course be to complete it sooner.
If you have any other questions, please ask me!  ***Thanks to @aleteia-ff for letting me copy her post as a template for this!

Note
(I'm aleteia-ff) List 5 things that make you happy, then put this in the askbox for the last 10 people who reblogged something from you. Spread the positivity!
This got wayyy longer then I intended but I was bored aha, anyway, in no particular order:
1) Summer! Or even just warm sunny weather - always puts me in the best mood. Where I live I’m literally a 20 minute drive from the beach so I get to go down there a lot when it’s warm, get to wear nice colourful clothes all day, and my aesthetics are plus 100 (because bright colours are kind of relevant obvs haha)
2) My Dog. Not much I can really say here apart from he is the bestest boy in the world i give him a thousand kisses a day he loves receiving hugs which I am ofc always obliged to give and he’s also the best company because unlike people, he doesn’t speak lmao
3) My friends + mutuals. I started college last September not knowing anybody but in the last couple months I’ve made a really secure group of friends, like I actually meet up with them outside of college, we go places and they also stop me from feeling like a complete shut in. As for my mutuals - never had any before last year! But I started talking to people in the fandom when the first news for dragons 3 came out and it’s just been really great getting to know people who share the same love of httyd as me :)
4) My original story/s and characters. I first started writing it when I was 13 and since then it has now developed so much to the point where I really feel like I’m coming into my own as a writer. I love my characters with all my heart and bottom line, writing is just super fun!
5) (I saved this one for last because it’s kind of a nice tie it all together moment if you get me)  HTTYD, 100%. Literally the light of my life, my favourite thing in this entire miserable existence. Not to get too gushy and emotional but my entire life has revolved around this franchise, movies and books, for the past 5 years and istg it really has shaped me as a person and I couldn’t be happier because of it. And lets be real - HTTYD is the most iconic franchise
Thanks for the ask thingy! :D

Let’s have a glass of vine
More than half a year ago, I saw a bunch of posts and fan art about this fic, The Phantom of the Arena. After a short while, I took a look at it and started reading. And it hooked me from the start! Since then, the story has taken its course, and now, it’s come to an end. The final chapter has been posted.
Through it, I have made a new friend and got to know a bunch of great people. I discovered my love for the story and songs of the musical of The Phantom of the Opera, although I am not really a musical person. All of this thanks to @aleteia-ff and her amazing work.
@celtictreemuffin and @hey-its-laura-again had this great idea of doing a little celebration after the fic has been completed. It gave me the last bit of motivation I needed to finally make this thing.
I am infinitely glad that I found this fic. And I’m looking forward to rereading it, to keep digging into its world with its creator and the people she has gathered around her because of it. If I had more time, I could keep going, write a whole essay about everything that happened to and around me since - and because - I saw a few posts on Tumblr while scrolling through my feed. But since I don’t: I’mma just leave this here.

800 Medieval illuminated manuscripts are now available online via Aleteia
A two-year project that drew together and digitized 800 manuscripts from the collections of the British Library and the Bibliothèque nationale de France has been completed and is available for perusing online. The manuscripts, all dated between 700 and 1200, are being made available to the general public for the first time. Historically, manuscripts from this time were reserved for the upper classes, who could read and write. The manuscripts were illuminated using vivid color pigments and gold leaf, which gave the hand-crafted books an artistic flair. An argument can be made that the popularity of manuscript illuminations paved the way for the great oil paintings of the Renaissance. Now, this project, The Polonsky Foundation England and France Project: Manuscripts from the British Library and the Bibliothèque nationale de France, 700-1200, and similar efforts are making it possible for the general public to examine these documents, which never would have been available to them 1,000 years ago. Even 10 years ago, only scholars and art historians could view ancient and delicate texts.

Sensor Sweep: August Derleth, Mack Bolan, Fandom History, Bill Crider Prize
Authors (DMR Books): One thing that A Look Behind the Derleth Mythos really clarified for me was just how much impact Derleth and his publishing business, Arkham House, had on the weird fiction scene from 1939 to 1971. Arkham House didn’t just publish HPL in fine hardcovers and keep his name and works in front of the public. Derleth, in the ’40s and ’50s, was easily the most high-profile and well-respected author to emerge from the Weird Tales stable.
Fiction (My Drops of Ink): 50 Years Ago, Don Pendleton envisioned a fictional character that would soon become a literary bestseller and a phenomenon through which the new action/adventure genre emerged.  Mack Bolan, a professional soldier, highly trained and skilled in the use of military tactics and weapons makes a life-altering decision after the tragic death of his family—his war is at home, not in the bloody fields of Vietnam.  Mack Bolan takes on a one-man war against the evils and corruption of the Mafia.
RPG (Euro Gamer): Developer Red Hook Studios has announced that it’s working on a sequel to its brilliant but brutal Lovecraft-inspired RPG, Darkest Dungeon.
The original game released in 2016, and tasked players with exploring numerous trap-infested environs, seeking out riches, and battling – in time-honoured turn-based fashion – a relentless procession of cosmic horrors. Each encounter with the unknown would send adventurers in a party to the brink of madness, eventually lumbering them with (usually) negative quirks and making future excursions that much harder.
Fandom (Between Wasteland and Sky): Welcome to the third part of this incredible journey through Fandom’s history. I did not expect quite so much material to come from this book when I first found the thing packed away on a shelf in that store, but here we are entering part 3 of 5.
It turns out Star Wars releasing the same year as this book in 1977 really was a watershed moment. That one movie destroyed a number of delusions Fandom had about their genre as many of the claims in this work vanished overnight.
Fandom (Between Wasteland and Sky): For the fourth part of our series we touch on two of the biggest tropes in science fiction and fantasy, and we deal with what brought them about. Of course because we are being guided by Mr. Lundwell we have to be reminded at just what a great and marvelous time we are (were) living in.
The 20th century was a hot mess of good intentions and brazen attempts to seize the new throne in the expanding wild west of civilization. Whereas it started with wars, sparks of ideas, and hope, it ended in wars, decadence, and pure nihilism. In every respect that counted it was an utter failure.
Fiction (Pulp Archivist): Previously, I discussed Asimov’s three kinds of science fiction: gadget, adventure, and social. And while this trio better describes the wild and wooly mess of science fiction than the binary set of hard and soft science fiction, new sub-genres have cropped up that don’t quite match the categories Asimov created. Now, Asimov’s categories are descriptions based on function, so many hybrids exist. But there still remains one category outside this spectrum.
Fiction (Pulprev): It is fashionable in modern SFF to denigrate religion as oppressive and outdated superstition. Priests are corrupt hypocrites, gods are dead or evil or both, religious doctrine is a lie — and the worst offender is always Christianity in fantasy dress. Science fiction goes one step further, portraying technologically advanced societies that have outgrown religion — including Christianity. Alternatively, religion is treated as window dressing, or as an afterthought plastered on to the setting.
Writing Contest (Bouchercon): Debuting at the 50th Anniversary of Bouchercon, Carol Puckett and the 2019 Bouchercon Dallas committee launched the Bill Crider Prize for Short Fiction to celebrate this treasured literary form, both the short story and the widely-admired mystery author and reviewer, Bill Crider. Designed to encourage writers from all over the world, these distinguished prizes award stories with fascinating characters and twisty plots, all in the mystery genre.
Fiction (Pattinase): I think a second subtitle might be “with Alpha Males.” Because the writers interviewed here are certainly that. All were popular when the book was written in 2009 and remain at the top of their profession 10 years on. The writers include: Crumley, Leonard, Woodrell, MacLeod, Ellroy, Collins, Cannell, Holden, Dexter, White, Russell, Friedman, Sallis, Bruen. I bet you didn’t have much difficulty in identifying any of them. Leonard, McLeod and Crumley are gone, I hope all the rest remain.
Military History (Tom McNulty): My father bought this book in 1969, and this is one of the rare non-fiction books that he read. The Mickey Spillane novels were the only fiction that he read, but when it came to non-fiction he read about WWII or Popular Mechanicsmagazine. He wasn’t alone. Iron Coffins was the talk of the neighborhood when it was published, and the book’s reputation is secure all of these decades later. This book is often mistaken as the inspiration for the 1981 film, Das Boot, directed by Wolfgang Petersen, but that excellent film was based on the novel of the same name by Lothar-Gunther Buchheim.
Gaming (Brain leakage): Case in point: I’m a big fan of the pulpy, Weird Tales type fantasy that makes up most of Gary Gygax’s famous Appendix N. As such, my campaign’s cosmology is ripped straight from Michael Moorcock. My game’s elves owe more to his doomed Melnibonéans than to Tolkien’s ethereal forest dwellers. I like Vancian Magic. One of my players is currently under a curse inspired by an unfinished Robert E. Howard fragment.
RPG (Matthew J. Constantine): Like most pre-published Chaosium campaigns for Call of Cthulhu, this one lacks focus.  There’s really no reason to deal with Mi-Go, Tcho-Tcho, ancient spiders, Hastur worshipers, and Ghouls, not to mention a ghost and some Sasquatch…Sasquatch?! in one, fairly short campaign.  I’m not a fan of putting traditional monsters (vampires, werewolves…Sasquatch…into Call of Cthulhu either, but that’s a discussion for another day).  It’s a bit of what YouTube reviewer Kurt Wiegel refers to as a ‘mythos hoedown.’
Fiction (Superversive): There is a prejudice in modern SF so nearly ubiquitous that it can be considered a trope. I’m talking about the assumption that the more technologically advanced a civilization becomes, the less religious it will be. While this prejudice is normally implicit in a lot of science fiction, the assumption was stated explicitly not too long ago in the sixth episode of The Orville’s first season, The Krill.
Art (Aleteia): The books of J.R.R. Tolkien are full of surprises. An exhibit in New York about Tolkien’s artwork has some nice surprises as well, and one of the best has to do with his fatherhood.
Long before John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1892-1973) published his Lord of the Rings trilogy, he was honing his craft as a storyteller with his four children.
Interview (R. D. Meyer Writes): I’ve dialed back a lot of stuff in order to just focus on fiction writing lately. That means less journalistic writing, because this is what I’ve set out to do—change culture, and now I’m finally in a position with a platform to where I can do it. It doesn’t get my name out there as often (cuz it’s usually only on releases and novels take time), but I want 2019 to be a body of work which blows others out of the water in just how much great fiction I can produce.
Indie Business (Kairos): The solution is very simple. Just add a storefront to your web site. And learn to code a custom version of that site so you don’t have to deal with Blogger or WordPress. And build your own distribution network to get your books to retailers, which you’ll also need to build. You’ll also need to build your own payment processor, and you should probably found your own international bank while you’re at it so you can issue your own credit cards. Oh, you’ll also need your own domain registrar because the existing ones can just yank that puppy if they don’t like the cut of your jib.
