Susanne K. Arnold's "Chimera" are explorations in wood, beeswax and found objects. Arnold states, "For many years I have been making small experimental sculptures out of encaustic and salvaged discards from my garden and neighborhood as a means to push the boundaries of my creative ideas, medium and process. Classical myths often serve as metaphors for the creative process and for the conflict I see taking place between nature and civilization." On view through September 17. Open this week Tuesday-Saturday. Gallery Hours: Noon to 4pm. Free and Open to the Public. Image shown, “Alianthus,” found object artwork.

Alianthus webworm (Atteva aurea), Fishers Island NY, July 2018.
Insects can serve as a metric for habitat quality, should you be familiar with their natural history. The Alianthus webworm, while beautifully colored, feed exclusively in the eastern US on tree of heaven (Alianthus altissima ), an invasive plant that spreads across forest edges and disturbed landscapes. As such, finding an Alianthus webworm (and in this case, two individuals mating) likely means that you have the invasive plant somewhere on your property.
As caterpillars, Alianthus webworms get their names from building matted webs of silk over the leaves they feed on, skeletonizing the plant tissues within. There are multiple generations of this insect in the eastern US, and those numbers have been increasing following warmer, changing climates.

Shining a Light on the Spotted Lanternfly
Although the Spotted Lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) resembles moths due to the shape of their wings, they are actually planthoppers-- a group of insects that is closely related to cicadas, aphids, bedbugs, and shield bugs. Collectively these insects are known as “true bugs”. The Spotted Lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) is native to eastern Asia; specifically India, Vietnam, China, and Taiwan. Although they thrive best in deciduous forests, they, like many true bugs, are generalists and can be found in many different environments.
Spotted Lanternflies are small, but their bright coloring makes them easy to spot, especially as they are usually active during the day. As juveniles, they can be either red or black with white spots. Adults are generally around 2 cm in length and have a wingspan of 1-2 cm. The distinctive red and spotted pattern can be a warning to predators, as L. delicatula can be toxic. In addition, the dull colouring of the adults’ outer wings are a form of camouflage.
Predators of the Spotted Laternfly consist of other insects; namely stinkbugs and parasitic wasps. In addition, their native population is kept in check by reliance on their preferred host species, the Tree of Heaven (Alianthus altissima). Spotted Lanternflies feed on the sap of this tree, as well as that of many other plant species. To feed, they pierce the outside of their host plant and suck out the sugary liquid inside with a specialized mouth part. This method can be damaging to the host plant, especially when large numbers of Spotted Lanternflies descend on the same plant. In addition, Spotted Lanternfly secretions, known as honeydew, can encourage mold growth on their host plant.
L. delicatula only lives to be a year old, and within that year they only reproduce once. In the late fall or winter, females lays several masses consisting of 20-30 eggs each on a tree trunk or branch. When possible, they lay their eggs on the Tree of Heaven due to the tree’s toxic metabolites. In the spring nymphs emerge from their eggs and feed on their host tree. At this point, they can absorb the tree’s toxic chemicals as a form of protection against predators. Nymphs go through four developmental stages before molting into their adult form. While they are young, nymphs can be highly aggressive towards each other and often fight for space on their host plants. As adults they do not show any signs of aggression over territory or mating rights.
Conservation status: The IUCN has not rated the Spotted Lanternfly. However, this species is considered an invasive pest in Japan, South Korea, and the United States. Spotted Lanternflies can severely damage host plants in their invasive range and may have long-lasting impacts on natural ecosystems and agriculture if not controlled.

Plauntie, do you have any advice on murdering the hell out of Tree of Heaven? Zone 6a if it matters. Somone planted the damn Ailanthus before we got the house, and it sends out tons of sucker saplings. I've tried weed block fabric, yanking them up and mowing them down. The plants reek like hell and grow back like crazy. I need to kill them all, because I found out last year that my skin reacts to Tree of Heaven like it's a bad case of poison ivy. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Goddamn that tree is fuckin just, the toughest motherfucker of a tree around.
And the answer is literally “salt the earth”
We had a couple trying to grow in our yard, and I literally bought a bulk container of regular ol’ sea salt and dumped it around the trunk, then watered it in with vinegar, and sprayed extra vinegar over the leaves. I kept doing this oh, once a week until the motherfuckers died.
The salt will leach out of the soil in a few good rains.
Now, I’d not use this for most weeds, because it’s not great for a ton of salt to end up in waterways. I only use it on rare occasions for the most stubborn. Most of the time, spraying with vinegar a couple times will do it. But if you really need something fucking dead and it’s as stubborn as alianthus, it will work and it’s more friendly than most herbicides. The salt will eventually make its way back to the sea.

im sure you were expecting a blorbo or something but youre going to hear about biology now anon.
im just gonna share a bunch of animals i like :] warning for insects, arachnids, and other creatures
Tumblr media Tumblr media
lets start with this. this is a polyphemus moth! (Antheraea polyphemus) belonging to family saturniidae (giant silk moths) which s known for having some of the largest moth species in the world!! including THE largest species the atlas moth (Attacus atlas) but this aint about him. these photos are of a pair i found that had likely mated shortly before this! the female (left) was eggbound :] you can tell which one is female ans which one is male by the antennae!! females will have smooth antennae and males antennae are covered in that like. feather like shit. males use this to pick up the females pheromones :]]
Tumblr media
heres another moth i found!! this little fella is an alianthus webworm moth (Atteva aurea,) arent their patterns gorgeous? :]
Tumblr media
this is my favorite snake!! the rhinoceros viper (Bitis nasicornis,) with such beautiful coloring, the little horns on their nose, the fat fuck friday swag, and everything else these guys are just Flawless. also i have a plush of one named lightning! you can find a photo of him in my pinned post :] rhino viper fun fact! theres a species in the same genus called Bitis rhinoceros and yet that one ISNT the rhinoceros viper. isnt this shit crasy.
Tumblr media
this fella is a thresher shark! specifically Alopias pelagicus, the pelagic thresher. there are three extant species of thresher shark and ill admit im not actually too familiar with them! but i DO like treshers as a whole! they use their long tail fin to whip shit. thats fucking awesome. i saw a thresher at an aquarium when i was a little kid and i was so scared it was so funny. thats why theyre my favorite shark now :]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
these are eastern pondhawks! Erythemis simplicicollis, now i HAVE seen these in person but i cant find my old photos of them :( the color variation you see here is sexual dimorphism! the females are that beautiful green color and the males are that beautiful blue color! incredible.
Tumblr media
cobalt blue tarantula. Cyriopagopus lividus. must i say anything more. its a bright ass blue spider.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and with these ive hit my image limit! what a wonder animal to end this on, this is Deinonychus antirrhopus, a dromaeosaur (raptor!) and my personal favorite dinosaur! if im not mistaken, the "velociraptors" in jurassic park were actually based of deinonychus and not velociraptor! i dont really go there tho so please note i very well Could be mistaken. fun fact! the most well known species of velociraptor (there are two) is Velociraptor mongoliensis :]
all images that were not taken by me (everything except the polyphemus moths and alianthus webworm moth) were just grabbed from the wikipedia pages for these guys. biology so cool

#1田 台灣唯一有提供血鴨的餐廳,醬汁是實實在在的味道,材料可以。THE ONLY RESTAURANT THAT OFFER PRESSED DUCK(CANARD AU SANG), SAUCE IS REALLY GOOD. Located in Dihua Street that is Taipei old street. Sauce is perfect, from salad, truffle sauce, to pressed duck sauce(Alianthus Prickly Ash inside, OMG). But material is just ok. I don’t understand why duck in France is better than in Taiwan, I doubt it’s breed problem. Maybe roast duck made from France duck is also bad fromp Taiwan. BTW, I like risotto with foie gras and preserved vegetable.

What You Need to Know About the Spotted Lanternfly Quarantine in Delaware
The spotted lanternfly has become quite a large problem in Delaware and other states across the country. Late spring’s rising temperatures signal the time when nymphs hatch, so we want to make awareness a priority. These insects easily spread to new areas and leave a huge path of destruction in their wake. Beginning in March, the government of Delaware enacted an emergency spotted lanternfly quarantine to help control the damage caused by the insect spreading. If you see evidence of spotted lanternflies on or around your property, contact a professional right away.
Tumblr media
What is the Spotted Lanternfly?
The first thing that you can do to protect your property is to know what you are looking for. The spotted lanternfly has four unique stages of growth and these insects look different during each stage. In the first stage, they look like little larvae with black spots, slowly gaining a red color as they age. If their wings are spread, adult lanternflies are fairly easy to recognize by their black colored heads and red, black, and white colored wings. If the insect is resting though, the wings make them harder to see with their brown-gray coloring.
Spotted Lanternfly typically prefer the Alianthus tree, also called the Tree of Heaven, so if you have this type of tree in your yard or surrounding area, you may want to seek professional assistance. The state’s Department of Agriculture has set up a site, https://de.gov/hitchhikerbug, with information about the spotted lanternfly and the quarantine.
The Spotted Lanternfly Quarantine: What You Need to Know
As of May, the state spotted lanternfly quarantine covered eleven zip codes, but more could be added if the insect is found in other areas. A number of transportable items must be monitored for possible insect presence. The spotted lanternfly is known as a hitchhiker because of its ability to fly or jump into vehicles or other materials and be carried to other areas.
Firewood
Construction or landscaping materials
Any outdoor equipment or furniture
Gardens and nurseries
Crates or boxes
Make sure you thoroughly check anything that fits into these categories if you are going to be transporting them. Service industry businesses, such as tree care companies, that operate in areas of spotted lanternfly quarantine must be certified through online education and a test. These constraints ensure that businesses are aware of the quarantine and the methods of operating in such a way that no lanternflies are carried to other areas.
Stein Tree Service is Certified to Work in All Spotted Lanternfly Quarantine Areas
The spotted lanternfly is a growing problem for homeowners. If you see the insect, or evidence of its presence, contact us for a consultation. We are committed to the health of trees and to helping homeowners maintain a healthy landscape.

Alianthus webworm (Atteva aurea), Newark DE. August 2017. Once found only in southern Florida, the Alianthus webworm has made its way north thanks in part to the introduction of the Tree-of-Heaven (Alianthus altissima), a nonnative ornamental tree that has quickly become invasive in the eastern US.
As a result, the Alianthus webworm can be found in cities and suburban areas from the southeast and into New England, and if you find it on your property, it is likely that Tree-of-Heaven plants are somewhere nearby. So, unfortunate to find it in my mothing event.
Caterpillars form silky webs around the leaves of Tree-of-Heaven branches and feed on the tissues within.
Multiple generations possible in the northeastern US, and increased summer temperatures may prolong the moth’s stay.
