My thoughts
Now, the Escobar & Miller (2012) chapter was a bit dense for me, as I have a very general understanding of causality. However, both articles touch on this idea of observation vs. intervention in causal learning which I find quite interesting. An observation of event A consistently occurring before events B and D might be perceived as the common cause of both effects (B and D). However, the authors point out that such observations alone may not enable the subject to establish whether A directly causes B. To explore the causal structure more conclusively, one potential approach is to intervene on one of the potential causal links while keeping all other factors constant. âActions can also be viewed as a special type of event; the consequences of actions may be learned faster than if the situation were merely observedâ (e.g., Leising, Wong, Waldmann, & Blaisdell, 2008).This makes sense to me, as I feel like youâd be more likely to remember, or learn, an answer in a class if you raised your hand and got it wrong (or right) than if you merely observed that happen to another student. I wonder, though, if observation of that circumstance (i.e., another student raising their hand and getting an answer wrong) would help more than if a professor just said the answer themselves. That being said, I wonder if another rat observing the intervening rat in the Leising et al. study would also produce the same response as that intervening rat themselves. That is, would the observing rat recognize the causal relationship between the lever -> tone without intervening themselves, or is this understanding unique to personal actions and their consequences?Â
If rats are capable of recognizing causal relationships by observing interventions, it prompts the question of transferability of knowledge across individuals within the same species and even across species. How do animals perceive and process causal information that revolve around a different species â such as, a pet cat watching its owner pour his or her food from a plastic bag into their empty food dish. Will the cat understand this causal relationship (i.e., owner -> food bag -> pour into food dish) even when they do not see it happening (e.g., they come across their previously empty food dish, now full)? Would that be an example of hidden event cognition? Of course, this would be without considering any contextual signs (e.g., hearing the food rustling in the bag and being poured into the dish). I wonder too, if a cat observed this causal chain once and only once, and then just continued to find its food bowl full after last seeing it empty, would they ever forget what caused that to happen (transfer effects)? Would this count as transfer effects because the cat itself did not intervene, but rather, observe? Or, would their knowledge of that causal chain be strengthened with each time that they found the full food bowl? That is, will they be reminded of (and further, strengthen) that causal model with each presentation of just the outcome?Â
On a similar note, to me, when speaking of causality, I canât help but think of Bayesian inference. Does causal discounting occur when youâre weighing out your priors and judging them by their probabilities? To discuss this further, letâs refer to the example about watering your front yard used in the Blaisdell & Waldmann (2012) paper when discussing transfer effects:
â[i]f I water my front yard and then notice that the sidewalk is wet, I infer that it was I and not rain that caused the wet sidewalk. If on the very next day, however, I notice that the sidewalk is wet and I know that I havenât watered my lawn that day, then I infer that it must have recently rained. Discounting of rain occurs in the instance in which I intervened, but that inference does not carry over to the next day on which I did not intervene; thus, no discounting is expectedâ
The initial intervention of watering the front yard establishes a causal belief, acting as a prior. On the next day, the absence of personal intervention shifts the inference, reflecting an update in the Bayesian model based on new evidence (wet sidewalk) and prior knowledge (previous day's intervention). Bayesian reasoning allows for this dynamic adjustment of causal beliefs in response to changing circumstances (contexts) and we must call upon these different adjusted beliefs when making causal inferences. Of course, our prior knowledge influences our causal inferences, but how exactly is that knowledge weighed in our knowledge bank? Are causal relationships that have been observed (or intervened) more often hold more weight, or does context triumph all? Do causal models encompass all the potential causes and their effects, in some sort of flow chart-like representation? Or is it more-so like a ranking (ordered from most to least likely)?

My main strengths in design are illustration and photography. Since I was young, I've loved drawing and doodling characters, feeling a deep satisfaction with each creation. Photography is my passion too. I enjoy capturing the world around me, preserving memories, and sharing my perspective with others. In five years, I aim to become a professional illustrator and designer.
To reach this goal, I plan to gain industry experience and challenge myself to step out of my comfort zone. This is how Iâll improve my skills and grow into the professional I aim to be. Through internships and by participating in various events and competitions. These experiences will help me learn, develop, and showcase my work to a wider audience.
I've realised that illustrating books opens a window into societyâs hidden stories, letting me explore diverse perspectives and emotions that words alone can't convey. Through visuals, I can invite readers to feel the atmosphere, connect deeply, and see the world in a new way.Â

Week 4: Progress Updates
Selamat datang. I am back with another update! (LOL it is within the same day though, I apologise). Call me strange, but having a TV series to accompany me while doing tasks helped me get through the weekâŠ
Still in the Te Kitenga phase, this week I assessed the empathy interviews and online questionnaire and went on a research trip. Unfortunately, I must say that this week was not really productive, as I feel like lately I have been in a not-too-good emotional and mental state.
Collating Responses
Due to confidentiality and privacy reasons, I will not put a screenshot of my progress evidence. However, one key insight I gathered from the empathy interview is that community plays a critical role in fostering the feeling of belongingness. Meanwhile, the online questionnaire provided a range of insights, some contradicting and some agreeing with the idea of my project. Regardless, all insights are valuable, providing significant help in knowing what elements to consider to make a community-based solution that aligns with the streamâs How Might We statement.

In this section, different storage containers were remodelled into spaces, starting from a storytelling space, a moving library, an underwater creature art exhibition, the University of Aucklandâs Marine pop-up space, and several others. Although the spaces might not relate to my project topic, however, exploring how the spaces are set up is helpful to know what attracts people to learn. This helps with the ideation of a solution, specifically the aspect of: what will make the target audience interested?Â

To some extent, I know we both saw it coming.
I remember looking at you, with the thought of how things will play out for us in case we get to the point of breaking up. I know that that mere thought scares me. Itâs not about being alone, because I know that I have been there before. It scares me because I know that I want to build a life with you. I have hopes and dreams of sharing a life with you.
I want to be with you and build a life together with you. It wasnât really a case of âCan I?â because I can, even to the extent of compromise, sacrificing a few things that I used to know and how I used to do things to align with what you know or what youâre used to.
But I canât seem to say that you were sure of me with the same conviction. It feels as if you are no longer sure, that you no longer see me as someone you want to share a life with.
I've built my entire lifetime in a universe with you in it, and its axis will run on writing you, for as long as the sun decides to kill that world. But things happened. We've already found ourselves in crumbled parts and our bodies destroyed from the circumstances our own decisions put us in but we couldn't outlast the forces that pulled us apart.
Our incessant squabbles would make us both realize that we could tolerate each other for all eternity. You were always the more logical between us, Iâm sure of it. And I never really had common sense anyway. You would actually be the living proof that this world actually made sense.
Your hand would wipe away some dirt on my face and youâd think that, despite not taking a shower that day, I was still pretty. You would notice how my eyes shined when I was so sure of my love for something. You probably would even notice its frequency whenever we walk together and the backs of our hands subtly come in contact with each other.
You would squeeze the excessive fat at the sides of my stomach. You would then state my tummyâs cuteness not just to ease my insecurity but because you actually thought it true. You would randomly put your arm around my body to provide me that sense of belongingness Iâve secretly yearned for all my life.
I would promise not to die early and leave you alone in this world. I would bravely cry in front of you then exchange my tears with ink and your shoulder with paper. You, despite your love for arguments and communicating, would seek no rationale and silently console me, perhaps even make me laugh.
You would allow me to undress your mind, to know every nook and cranny within. I would finally have the answers to all my whys and youâd have all the answers to yours. That is, of course, if we actually knew the answers. Weâd finally be thankful to have someone we could share our ghosts with.
We would try to wave away each otherâs negative thoughts, treat them as butterflies that just managed to stay overdue despite all our thrashing.

Third Day
January 31, 2024
What I'm feeling right now is a mild emotional heartbreak. The kind of heartbreak that quickly subsides later as you keep yourself busy by chatting with at least one or three the same people whom you feel genuinely being cared for and other past times such as scrolling mindlessly over your feeds or adding items to cart at SHEIN. This heartbreak I am feeling right now is not related to my romance/love life aspect. Heck, I'm happily single and healthily living with more abundance at my current stage for almost eight months counting.
One of the traits that I hate and love the most about myself is being observant and protective of my energy by staying passive or by simply means being neutral in the corporate world. It torns me into little piece by piece, each time I feel the change of dynamics of our relationship and the more I interacted with a certain co-professional or generally, how I try to fit in their social box, the more he/she feels off about me. Is it something that I have said or was I insensitive enough or how I should act out? Or were those my quirks that are a completely off that other people adorned? Or simply we aren't a check on vibe. This isn't applied to all partnered personnels. Just a few I meant from them. I mean, I'm used with the confrontations if there's any mismanagement from hectic work. I'll manage to patch up, being careful and avoid repeating the same mistakes again by doing more better next time. I'm all cool with the corrections. But, being personally connected and being heard. Feeling I am a valid human being is what I seek there.
This got me overthinking by reducing myself that I'm the least likeable. I am truly heartbroken in this longing search of belongingness. I feel like I'm the unicorn that's being taken for granted among them other horses, so odd on their views maybe just because I don't completely align most of their traditional goals like get married, pregnant, have babies and share sufferings. Or perhaps, because of how I take good care of myself - appearance wise - or most of the time, I cannot think of any comments about anything outside work related, so I just maintained my calm, nonchalant composure...and the overthinking list goes on. However, outside the corporate world, I'm praised and showered with countless admiration for being cool for simply being me.
Sometimes I feel like asking to God, is it valid to feel that I want to kill myself and simply not exist anymore? Just because I feel like I do not feel appreciated for who I am or how I do not feel that I truly matter there. I know this is a small issue that I make such a big fuss about it. I only keep this with myself, never have I shared this to anyone. Not even to whom I'm kind of having a lowkey 'thing' with the current who. My family, genuine longtime friends, some supportive business clients and co-officers and people online who gushed over me...These are the ones whom I should be so grateful to God for allowing these people into my life to keep going. I should always think about this. Be grateful that there are people who still want me to be alive. Existing.
Going back...on the other side of the coin, I'm comfortable with at least three or four of my co-professional partners whom I feel accepted. Still, not enough. I'm not enough, never will I ever be enough for anyone who wants to keep in touch with me.
I know you, as an avid reader who comes reading this far (and for that I truly appreciate you whoever you are! May God grant you unexpected abundant blessings to your life in all aspects!) feel weirded out questioning how come I, as a successful and beautiful career woman, who lives by fitness, who pampers her appearance, who's got achievements in her sales career, being admired by countless clients and strangers, living such a good and peaceful life, ever reached into this level of self-loathing and sulking.
Welp, all I can say, for me, sense of belongingness is what I'm struggling. Hence, I'm much happier mingling with different people and making new friends through online dating applications and business dealings because I don't get to interact all of them everyday. They do not get to the openly, genuinely carefree real me - the same ole dorky, nerdy, weirdly multi-linguist, quirky, boyish me - in which, my closest longtime high school, college and childhood friends could see. Those who know me the best and by heart.
I noticed that I tend to jump and hangout with new groups every time the previous ones I stayed in contact with dissolves, truly because of different life priorities and no mutual effort to adjust our times to see each other.
Being silent is both either my comfort or shield to protect myself not to get into a conflict. It's so hard to find someone whom I feel that I really matter or who truly listens to me in that tough hearted world. I know one of my problems is shutting myself off by keeping myself busy with growing piles of applications and client calls. I probably do this tactic because I'm either lazily sociable or not in the mood to be sociable or overwhelmed from work. I easily get socially drained. That's why I'm careful in saving up my energy to whom I feel deserves my time and most importantly being in a personal boundary with me.
To wrap up the emotional sadness behind this contagious smiley face who is to live another day tomorrow...I am on my third day of red tide.
