Samer, his wife Shorouq, and their Three Children: Qusai (7), Eileen (5), and Hisham (1), who is nearing his second birthday, are all currently living in a tent in the harsh conditions of Rafah during winter. There are lows of 43°-48°F with the coldest months being December and January, quite cold compared to the highs from the summer, which are 86°-91°F, with an average of 2" of rainfall expected this month alone. For people with a warm home that has a roof, this may not seem like a lot, but Samer's family is in a tent on the ground. Furthermore, they need to secure housing to have protection from the elements. Until they cross, and once they've raised their border-passing funds ($17,500 or $5,000 x2 Adults and $2,500 x3 Children), they still need money to cover food, which costs are skyrocketing for. Here's a chart displaying the cost of different food items per kg, bottle, dozen, or unspecified measurement in both North and South Gaza, where the Rafah Crossing is located.
