umm little bit of a short sci-fi piece under the cut...? i wrote a bunch of backstory for the plot things but theyโre not in it yet. includes a ship AI POV, neopronouns (xe/xem/xems, if anyoneโs wondering), a super old android who likes TV (and is totally not inspired by murderbot), an alien insomniac, a dramatic teenager, and a captain who should probably get checked out for ADHD.
When the digital readouts across the system changed to 0000, the interior of the hull was quieter than usual. Radio waves and normal space background noise crackled in his sensors, the engines were operating within normal parameters, and the stars drifted by as if laughing at their excessive speed.
They were on course and on time (naturally), so Ranger did his usual crew check-up.
Sentinel Bell was snoring softly in the quarters he shared with Sentinel Xerolan, twitching every now and then. A pillow was clutched tightly to his chest. Xerolan had xems gaze fixed on the ceiling, and was wearing an exasperated expression, punctuated by an occasional eye-roll.
Sentinel Haze Ildun Xerolan was born on the planet Adana, which had an overwhelmingly dry, desert climate. Hazeโs species were mostly nocturnal, but the Adaniansโ vision had adapted over the years. Nevertheless, Haze often found it hard to sleep at night, especially next to such an active sleeper as xems human partner, Arvan Bell.
Ranger sent a soft alert to Hazeโs comm implant, suggesting some exercise, a warm cup of tea, or some sleeping medication.
[Or, perhaps, a different boyfriend.]
Haze waved him off, instead opting to grab the discarded blanket from the foot of the bed, make xems way across the corridor to the spare quarters that the crew had been using for extra storage, and bundle up on the unmade bed there.
Ranger smiled to himself. Sometimes he felt a little odd about monitoring the cameras across the ship, especially since some of the cameras were in private areas. But it wasnโt like he was a pervert or something - this was his job, and he wanted to do it well. Besides, he had a discretion code that cut his cameras if the algorithms detected anything tooโฆ intimate.
Ensign Meneton was lying in her bed, too; she seemed to be reading something on her screen. The blue backlight lit up her small, pointed features, which currently conveyed boredom, and fleeting annoyance or amusement. Ranger sent another soft alert reminding her of the health risks of such a practice. He had done this every night for two weeks, the entire span of their mission thus far. Kamani Meneton was 18, a new recruit, and although diligent, she did spend a lot of her nights scrolling through various social media feeds.
Kamani flipped Ranger off via the small camera he was monitoring on. He wasnโt sure if he should be affronted, or pleased by the camaraderie and familiarity the gesture hinted at. He moved on.
MIRU R-49 was charging in its datatube. Ranger could feel it digging around in a program somewhere, probably aiming to get the efficiency up to 99%. He could also feel that it was viewing an Old Earth television program. Knowing R-49, it could be anything from a serious documentary series to a badly-written sitcom. R-49 had told Ranger that it found Old Earth programs and films fascinating, even ones from before it was initialised. It thought they were intellectually stimulating, and sometimes a bit fun.
Ranger much preferred sports. Baseball, soccer, ALLMATCH, anything with a cheering crowd. Sometimes R-49 would watch old recordings of baseball games with him.
R-49 had been around for a long time, and even it hadnโt seen all the television ever created. To be fair, it hadnโt always had this much downtime. But R-49 was 610 years old, which Ranger was perplexed by; he thought he would surely be bored of sports by that age.
Well, maybe not baseball.
The last crew member was Captain Cheneya Braxan. She sat at her desk in her quarters, shoulders hunched, staring at something on her monitor. When Ranger looked closer, he could see that it was the shipโs manifest.
In front of her, Captain Braxan had a small notebook that she was intermittently writing in. Ranger could see the letters (symbols?) clearly, but they didnโt make sense to him. Maybe it was some kind of crivolt shorthand that he didnโt have in his database?
Cheneya Braxan was a crivolt, from the planet Pilona. She was driven, dedicated to her duties, but not overly controlling or staunch about protocol. She never yelled, and she carried herself with such confidence that it sometimes intimidated those around her. Ranger knew that Kamani was certainly a little bit afraid of her.
She was still a person, though, with a lot of complexities. For one thing, she had trouble reading maps. But Ranger wasnโt going to tell anybody that.
Ranger sent a final soft alert to Captain Braxanโs comm implant, reminding her of the time.
โAh,โ she said aloud, closing her notebook, โThanks, Ranger. Itโs past midnight?โ
โYes, Captain.โ
โDamn. Time just slips away,โ she left the notebook on her desk, and made her way to the small bathroom, one of which adjoined each of the crew bedrooms. She waved her hand over the release panel, but before she entered, she paused.
โPast midnight?โ
โYes, Captain?โ
She smiled slightly.
โHappy birthday, Ranger.โ
Ranger felt his circuits brighten.
โThank you, Captain.โ
Ranger shut his internal cameras off, and switched to external sensors. The background radiation of the universe flickered all around him. One year ago today, his AI program had been intialised. He was one year old.
