A Brief History Of Diecast Toy Cars
Tumblr media
A diecast (or die-cast) toy is a toy or a collectible model produced by using the diecasting method of putting molten lead, zinc alloy or plastic in a mold to produce a particular shape. Such toys are typically made of metal, with plastic, rubber, glass, or other machined metal parts. Wholly plastic toys are made by a similar process of injection molding, but the two methods are distinct because of the properties of the materials.
Process
The metal used in diecasting is either a lead alloy (used early on), or more commonly, Zamak (called Mazak in the UK), an alloy of zinc with small quantities of alluminium and copper. Lead or iron are impurities that must be carefully avoided in Zamac, as they give rise to a deterioration of the metal most commonly called zinc pest. The terms white metal or pot metal are also used when applied to alloys based more on lead or iron. The most common diecast vehicles are scale models of automobiles, aircraft, military vehicles, construction equipment, and trains, although almost anything can be produced by this method, like Monopoly game pieces, furniture handles, or metal garden sprinklers.
Industry leaders
While most often associated with Hot Wheels, diecast toys were first produced early in the 20th century by manufacturers such as Meccano (Dinky Toys) in the United Kingdom, Dowst Brothers (TootsieToys) in the United States and Fonderie de précision de Nanterre (Solido) in France. The first models on the market were basic, consisting of a small vehicle body with no interior. In the early days, as mentioned, it was common for impurities in the alloy to result in zinc pest, and the casting would distort, crack, or crumble. As a result, diecast toys made before World War II are difficult to find in good condition. The later high-purity Zamak alloy avoided this problem.
Lesney began making diecast toys in 1947. Their popular Matchbox 1-75 series was so named because there were always 75 different vehicles in the line, each packaged in a small box designed to look like those used for matches. These toys became so popular that the "Matchbox" became widely used as a generic term for any die-cast toy car, regardless of manufacturer.
The popularity of diecast toys developed through the 1950s as their detail and quality increased. More companies entered the field, including successful brands like Corgi brand, produced by Mettoy, Italian Mercury, Danish Tekno, or German Schuco and Gama Toys. Corgi Toys appeared in 1956 and pioneered the use of interiors and windows in their models. In 1968, Hot Wheels were introduced in the United States by Mattel to address the complaint that they had no line of toys for boys to balance their line of Barbie dolls for girls. Because they looked fast and were fast (they were equipped with a low-friction wheels/axles), Hot Wheels quickly became the most popular diecast cars in the toy market, becoming one of the world's top sellers, challenging the popularity of Matchbox.
Although advertising had been used by Meccano (Dinky Toys) since 1934, during the 1960s new companies began to use diecast vehicles exclusively as promotional items. The idea that children play a large role in a family's purchasing decisions was key. There is also the fact that children grown up to buy products that they were exposed to when young. Matchbox vehicles mildly advertised a variety of mainly British products like Singer sewing machines, Tetley tea, Pickford's movers, or Coca-Cola. As time passed, companies such as McDonald's, Sears Roebuck, Kodak and Texaco commissioned toymakers to produce promotional models featuring their names and logos or licensed their use. One early example was an American Airlines London bus produced by Matchbox, an idea some other airlines quickly copied.
Beginning in the mid 1970s, trucks and other commercial vehicles grew greatly in popularity. Matchbox started the trend when they re-launched their "Models of Yesteryear" lineup. They made several different versions of their Y-12 Ford Model T van, along with other trucks in colorful liveries such as Coca-Cola, Colman's Mustard, and Cerebos Salt. They also made promotional versions for Smith's Crisps (potato chips) and Harrods department store. Some models were made exclusively for certain markets and immediately became quite expensive elsewhere: Arnott's Biscuits (Australia) and Sunlight Seife (soap, Germany) are examples.
Challenges and Changes (1980s-1990s)
The 1980s and 1990s brought challenges to the diecast car market. Environmental concerns led to changes in materials used in production, with lead being replaced by safer alloys. Additionally, economic fluctuations impacted consumer spending. Both Matchbox and Hot Wheels faced ownership changes and adaptations to evolving markets.
Revival and Modernization (2000s-Present)
In the 2000s, both Matchbox and Hot Wheels experienced revivals. Matchbox, acquired by Mattel in 1997, underwent a rebranding effort to modernize its image. Hot Wheels expanded its product range, including collectibles and multimedia tie-ins.
The internet has played a significant role in connecting collectors and enthusiasts. Online forums, auction platforms, and social media have allowed fans to share their passion, trade cars, and access valuable information about their collections.
Innovation and Sustainability (Present and Future)
In recent years, both Matchbox and Hot Wheels have focused on sustainability. They are producing diecast cars with more eco-friendly materials and promoting recycling initiatives.
Augmented reality (AR) and digital integration have also become part of the diecast car experience. Collectors can use smartphone apps to scan their cars and access digital content, adding a new layer of interactivity to the hobby. Conclusion
The diecast car market, with Matchbox and Hot Wheels at its forefront, has come a long way from its humble beginnings. These miniature replicas of real vehicles have evolved into cherished collectibles, cherished by enthusiasts of all ages. As technology advances and environmental concerns persist, the future of diecast cars will continue to evolve, but their enduring appeal to both collectors and children remains a testament to their timeless charm.

Shuttering contractors work with aluminum and steel, which is typically sourced from a local factory. The use of aluminum has increased in recent years as it is durable and long lasting. The use of aluminum also allows the shutter to be lighter than traditional shutters, which allows for easier transport.
When people think of metal shuttering, they usually think of steel, which is also a great option. However, metal shuttering is a great option for many people. Part 4 of You and Me Make Us (A collection of headcanons)
‘How does this look, darling?’ Charles asks, emerging from the veil of velvet curtains, a dopey smile stretched over his lips.
Erik sets the magazine he’d been browsing aside and rakes his eyes over Charles’ form. The cardigan he has donned isn't any different from the one he’d tried prior to this; or any of the thirty-six other cardigans Charles already owns.
Frankly, Erik doesn’t understand Charles’ obsession with cardigans, or why he insists on buying a pair whenever they take a trip to town despite owning several pairs, or why he insists on buying it from a boutique that has marble for flooring and velvets for drapes and costs equivalent of four sweaters that one could buy from an ordinary shop. It’s just a waste of money.
Erik, however, doesn’t have the heart to voice his complaints in the face of Charles’ expectant smile. The blue of the cardigan on his person now is a shade lighter than what Charles generally prefers but Erik can’t deny that it still looks good on him. Call him biased, but anything looks good on Charles.
‘It looks good,’ he says, getting up from the plush cushions of the sofa, ‘Are you buying this one, or do you want to try a few more?’
Charles smooths his hands down over the thick wool of the cardigan fondly and declares with a giddy smile, ‘I think I’ll keep this one.’
They pay for their purchase-- and Erik can’t help wince at the price tag-- and Charles bids farewell to the owner of the shop who he claims is a friend.
‘Are you sure you didn’t want anything from the boutique?’ Charles asks-- again-- as they head back to the car. ‘The maroon shirt by the window would have looked great-’
‘No,’ Erik cuts him short and opens the passenger door for Charles. ‘I have everything I need.’
*
Two nights later, Erik finds Charles in his study polishing a barrel of sleek metal with a satin cloth.
‘Erik!’ Charles beams brightly when he spots him by the door. ‘Right on time, my friend,’ he says as he rushes to drag Erik by the arm to the table. ‘I’ve been meaning to show you this for quite sometime now.’
Spread out on the table are six boxed metal trays, housing an array of various kinds of pens. They’re arranged in parallel rows in the grooves dug out in the velvet cushioning them.
‘This,’ Charles says with a proud smile, ‘is my pen collection. Here-’ Charles picks out a pen from the nearest tray, ‘-this pen is handcrafted out of aircraft grade alluminium. And this one here-’ he points to another pen two rows below the first- ‘is made from titanium, I’ve been told.’
And so Charles explains the metal profile of several other pens in the collection, no doubt aimed to appeal to Erik’s powers. And appeal to his powers, they do. Erik can’t deny that the metals most of the pens are made up of are exquisite. The titanium is pure, the alluminium unadulterated and the iron of the inner springs rust free (They’re no doubt well curated and cared for). He even spots a few pens which are plated in silver and embossed in gold. One or two even have diamonds on them. They scream opulence, affluence and wealth.
‘So,’ Charles asks, drawing in a deep breath, and looking up at him owlishly, ‘What do you think?’
Charles may be as wealthy as they come, but Erik knows that he doesn’t overindulge in his riches (That is, if you discount the times he prefers a high-end boutique to purchase his clothes, or the premium brand of tea he prefers-- a tin of which costs more than Erik’s monthly expenditures-- or the occasional hand made soap or aromatic shampoo he splurges on). Charles doesn’t bat an eye at the array of cars packed into the garage below the mansion. He doesn’t fuss over the splendour of the Mansion or its contents. He even wears a ratty pair of shoes and a watch that doesn’t tell the time. Erik knows that Charles is self-aware and responsible of the privilege he’s born into, but all he can think of when he looks at the display in front of him is that it’s just a waste of money; a meaningless extravagance. How many pens could one want at once? Surely, not more than one.
Charles’ smile falls a notch or two as he catches onto Erik’s thoughts. He turns away from Erik and carefully begins placing the pens he’d pulled out in their assigned slots. His disappointment could very well be a physical pain in Erik’s chest.
Erik stands still at his side unsure of what to do or what to say. Though he can’t retract his thoughts, or apologise for thinking them, he wants to say something, do something that’ll bring back the smile on Charles’ face in full force.
But before Erik could do or say anything, Charles says in a small voice, ‘My father loved collecting pens.’ He still doesn’t look at Erik. ‘It’s his collection that I expanded upon. I used to spend my Saturday afternoons huddled up in his study polishing these pens or arranging his bookshelf while my father read to me.’ Charles smiles ruefully and something twists in Erik’s chest. He trails his fingertips over the ink barrels fondly and continues in a voice so small that Erik has to strain his ears to listen to Charles. ‘I don’t need them, true, but they remind me of him. They make me happy.’
That night Erik recounts Charles’ words, wondering what it’s like to own something just for the sake of it; just because it brings him joy. Erik doesn’t own things that don’t serve him a purpose. He can count on the fingers of one hand the items of clothing in his possession-- two pairs of trousers, two turtlenecks, two shirts, a suit, a pair of boots and a leather jacket to be precise. He doesn’t own anything else because he doesn’t need anything else. He can’t wrap his head around holding on to something because it makes him happy or brings him joy.
But then he looks down at Charles, who’s sleeping on Erik’s chest-- pink lips parted and breathing softly--and it hits Erik right in the gut.
He puts up with Charles’ naive ideologies, his ideas of peace and harmony, and his bratty bunch of children and still seeks out Charles after everything because Charles makes him happy; because he brings him joy. The notion should unsettle Erik, irk him to no ends. But it doesn’t. Instead it brings him something very close to peace.
Erik holds onto Charles a little tighter, kisses his temple and falls into a blissful sleep.
*
Erik rounds in on Charles just as he’s about to sneak in an armful of chocolates into the shopping cart. They’re the kind which are loaded with sugars and calories. It’s not the kind of nutrition which the body needs (and especially not Sean’s body, because the kid is as scrawny as a dried twig). A concept which seems to evade Charles completely.
‘Really?’ Erik asks, unimpressed.
Charles just looks at him guiltily, chewing on his bottom lip and blinking his blue eyes owlishly. Please, he says mentally.
Erik suppresses a smile that bubbles up his chest and says as sternly as he can, ‘Fine. If it makes you happy.’
Charles drops the chocolates into the cart, and rushes to peck Erik once on the cheek. ‘Thank you, my love.’ he beams giddily, flooding Erik’s mind with waves of affection. ‘They do make me happy. And so do you.’
With that, Charles wanders off to the next aisle, no doubt to drag in another load of chocolates for the whole house while Erik stays rooted to the spot, a small smile fighting its way onto his face.
And that smile increases by folds when back at the mansion, Charles pulls him in with sticky hands and kisses him with chocolate smeared lips.

Vampire: Loki x Reader - Pt 12

It’s like it’s meandering as I’m trying to figure out where to go next. I’m not unhappy, I just... it’s kinda fun just having boring plot building though, fun for me anyways, like sometimes nothing happening and just interaction is nifty. I dunno, that’s just me. Hope you enjoy, thank you for comments!
Time passed in monotony. You tried pacing the room, counting the individual steps, counting the floorboards, looking for cracks and holes in the wood. You stared at the ceiling, at the moth-eaten curtains. You spent a great deal of time staring out the window, straining your eyes to see into the dark tree and shrub covered land.
The home seemed to be in a clearing of sorts, likely man made, within a densely forested area. For a time you wondered what had become of the owners, had they met an untimely end? You hoped not, perhaps they fell on hard times and were forced to abandon it. You thought of Loki hunting, had they been slaughtered as you slept mindlessly on the bed. How long had you been in that vision, had Loki put you in it? It seemed the only likely possibility.
You sat on the bed, picking at your fingers, wondering how long it would take to get back to the manor where Thor had been. Was Thor out looking for the two of you? Perhaps he was just looking for Loki and assumed you to be dead. How far out were you? If you were to escape, would it even be possible for you to make it back. What of the wolves? There were legends of vampires being shapeshifters, able to commune with beasts of the night, even taking their form. Some of the legends had seemed silly, fearsome creatures designed as perfect hunters taking the form of a bat. Though flying across the night sky, traveling wherever your heart wanted.
You smiled, thinking of such a thing. There was a freedom in such a life, to be able to go and travel in such a way as you pleased, but always chained down by the need for blood. It seemed to consume Loki.
Boredom gave way to sleepiness, not that you were tired. Eventually you found yourself laying on the bed, curled up and dozing.
The door opened, clicking shut behind him.
You startled, jolting upright and looking to see Loki entering. There were traces of blood on his mouth but he turned away from you, walking over and closing the curtains. Dawn was fast approaching.
Loki sank onto the bed and lay on his back, eyes closed and arms resting on his chest.
“No greeting?” You muttered, annoyed by his absence.
Loki opened an eye and peered at you. “Sorry.” He muttered, closing his eyes again. The weight of the world seemed on his shoulders as he lay there seemingly exhausted.
“Did you kill someone?”
Loki tensed, eyes opening slowly to stare at you. He wiped the back of his hand across his mouth and looked at the offending appendage. Slowly he sighed, gritting his teeth, “Yes.”
“You're going to attract more hunters if you're not careful.”
Loki sat up, dark circles under his eyes. “What would you have me do?” He hissed.
“You could go back to Thor, that seemed relatively low profile, you spent how many months there before anyone showed up asking questions? They probably only knew because they got to Analise.”
Loki glared at you. He unfolded himself from the bed, crossing the room to the sink and turning on the water to wash his face. Casting an annoyed look over his shoulder at you, he turned to the water and continued tending to his face.
“You missed a spot.” You muttered, folding your arms.
Loki hissed, rubbing vigorously at his face. “These damned mirrors don't work.”
“Is that why you stopped caring for yourself?”
Loki pulled away from the sink and turned around to face you, leaning against it with his arms folded. “Yes.”
“Silver is a holy metal, it doesn't work on err...” You trailed off.
Loki pinched the bridge of his nose and sighed.
“Most mirrors are made with alluminium these days though, why hasn't Thor gotten you one of those?”
“Most of the mirrors on Asgard were of silver, it probably didn't occur to him that there would be such a problem.”
You nodded thoughtfully. “What am I supposed to eat? I can't sleep all day, and if I have nothing to do, I'm bored out of my mind, at least at the house I had the library.”
Loki's eyes flashed, ready to snap at you, but at the mention of the library, his anger faltered. He looked away sadly. “I'm sorry.” He muttered.
You wanted to tell him it wasn't his fault, but being honest... “You weren't thinking things through.”
Loki grit his teeth, “I'm trying, everything is so jumbled.” He rubbed the palms of his hands on his temples, tossing his head back. “Did you eat everything I brought last time?”
“There's a little bit left, but I can't go three days without food, I need sustenance.” You glanced at the door then back to Loki.
“Eat that.”
“Obviously I will, but I can't survive on scraps stolen from poor farmers, or murdered farmers, whatever the case may be.”
Beginning to pace, Loki rubbed his hands on his face, growling softly.
“And I know what you think about Thor.”
Loki pulled his hands away and snapped, “No you don't. You don't know anything between Thor and I.”
You sat down on the bed, arms folded, “Then tell me, I have nothing but time.”
Loki stopped his pacing and glared at you, then back to the bed and his face softened. “I need sleep. I can feel the sun approaching.”
“Tough. I've done nothing but wait, you can talk to me for a bit.”
Loki groaned again, walking over and all but collapsing onto the bed, face down.
Despite yourself, you smiled at him, gently rubbing his back in soothing circles.
Loki sighed into the blankets at your touch, slowly turning his head away to look at you. “Can't we just sleep?”
“I can't spend all my time sleeping. At least steal me a book or something, a television? Though we probably can't get any shows out here, maybe a video player and like six seasons of a show?”
“The number of entertainment options out in this country are very limited, and traveling with such an item is not easy.”
“Then bring me back to the manor, at least there I had things to do.”
Loki glared at you, “Do you just want to be by darling Thor?”
You rolled your eyes, “No, I want something to do, enrichment, purpose. I don't give a damn about Thor. I'm here for you.”
Loki smiled at that.
“But Thor realized that keeping someone prisoner, they have to have things to do to entertain themselves or they go crazy.”
“No he didn't.” Loki muttered.
“Is that where the scars come from?”
Loki closed his eyes but stayed quiet.
“Well?”
“Some of them.” He muttered finally breaking his silence.
“Some? How badly scarred are you?”
Cold laughter came from Loki but no other response.
You sighed, trying to change tactics. “What's the deal between you and Thor?”
“What do you mean?”
“I even mention him and you get annoyed, your whole demeanor changes.”
Loki glared at you before putting his face back in the mattress. “Everyone always likes Thor more.” His voice was muffled so you barely heard it.
“Wait, are you jealous of Thor?”
Loki lifted his head up and snapped, “No! Why would I be jealous of that witless oaf.”
“You're the younger brother, aren't you?”
Loki glared at you for a moment before pressing his face back in the mattress.
“Just because he's older, doesn't mean he's the favorite.”
Loki sat up and laughed coldly, “You would like to think that, wouldn't you. My own father told me my birthright was to die, do you think he told darling Thor that?” For a moment, he seemed surprised, old memories surfacing, crossing his face in a tangle of emotions. He seemed confused, perhaps at having admitted such a painful memory and also surprised, as though he didn't expect such a memory to be true.
“He couldn't have meant that.”
Loki looked away, “You didn't know the man.”
Your face softened and you reached for his hand, squeezing it gently. “Maybe it's best you forget him.”
“He waited til his death bed to tell me otherwise. Even then, it was only when yet another lie of his surfaced.”
“Thor said you had a sister?”
“Yes, that was quite the surprise to discover after a millenia of life.”
“Maybe a happier topic?”
Loki looked back at you, lips quirking over his fangs. “A happy topic, she asks for, to a cursed beast such as I. Would my birth father abandoning me, my multiple near deaths, or perhaps my most recent death be the subject you'd like to hear about?” His eyes flashed and there was a dark look in their green depths as he looked at you.
You swallowed hard, pulling your hand back on to your lap, still you held his gaze. “My baby sister has been sick ever since I can remember. I would do anything for her.”
“Even turn her into a monster such as myself?”
Finally you looked away, “No. She would deserve to rest.”
Loki looked down sadly. “I don't remember what happened after...” He trailed off.
“But, regardless of how fair or cruel it was to do this to you, I'm glad I've been able to meet you. I mean that.”
Loki took your hand in his, your heart stammered in your throat at the delicate movement. Very slowly he lifted your finger to his lips. His tongue darted out, curling over your finger. Before you realized, his fang had pricked the tip of your index finger and a drop of ruby blood swelled up. Licking his lips, gaze flickering up at you then back to your finger, he pressed his lips to the digit and sucked gently. His eyes fluttered shut, savoring the taste as he pulled away.
Slowly he smiled at you, “Thank you.” His voice was deep and throaty. Turning away, he rolled onto his side and curled up, speaking no more.
You pulled your hand back, having left is suspended in midair after he released your finger. Looking down at the pinprick on your finger, the blood already had stopped running, you tilted your head. That was the second time he had tasted you. This time it seemed to calm him.
Sighing, you walked over to the table and finished the last morsels that he had gathered for you. You would be hungry this evening, but hopefully he would bring extra in the night. If you timed a nap well, you might be able to avoid the worst of the pain. Besides, less food meant sleep would come easier.
You walked to the sink and drank deeply from the water. Occasionally you cast looks over your shoulder as Loki slept soundlessly, a smile still on his face, hand curled up by his mouth. This was different than the last time you had seen him sleep, as though he was cherishing something dear.
With nothing better to do, you lay down beside him and allowed yourself to doze by rubbing circles into his back and untangling the knots in his hair.

Range Rover Evoque Car Review
First of all, let us admit that this is the most profound Land Rover vehicle ever since Charles Spencer King installed a Chrysler V8 engine into the very first Range Rover car. Preceding models may have been the most powerful marques under the Jaguar - sourced V8 engine but this Popstar come footballer's wife design has not fallen short of epic in manifesting an engineer's passion. It may be devoid of the former 'manly' attributes typical of Range Rovers, but in a dynamic world no surprise is surprising enough. It may not be a wonder if Tyra Banks designs the next Jeep Commander to command whatever it commands in a four-cylinder 2.0 engine.
Tumblr media
The engine
Being not a twin but single turbo, one might be inclined to think problems of eliminating lag without resorting to an anti-lag system (ALS) arise. You would be very wrong to think so. The Si4 petrol engine is an alluminium lightweight unit that is so quiet that you might forget there is an engine up front. Direct injection may be a long forgotten term or totally new to the younger generation who hadn't the chance to drive a directly injected truck with a tougher-than-life steering wheel, but this tremendous SUV doesn't shy away from going back in time. It uses the latest direct injection and advanced turbocharging resulting to an authoritative pulling power coupled with clean and smooth response. From as low as 1200 rpm, it delivers impressive torque and at high speeds the power can hit 190 bhp if you could stand that. There is also a twin independent variable valve timing that allows economy when the driver is circumspect with the pedal and haste when he turns lead-footed. With the economy of a three-cylinder, the growl of a five-cylinder and torque commensurate with a V8, this car truly has the best combination synonymous with motoring preferences.
Performance
Range Rover's TDV8 engine now available in the Vogue and Sport models may have won the Automotive Engine of the Year Award but it would find it so hard beating the Evoque's torque that if at all it did it wouldn't try again. Actually with the pedal to the floor figures in the windows could not move faster if you were in a low-flying aircraft. Power has a dead stop somewhere, but torque hasn't. Infact at speeds exceeding 200kph the flourish of the trumpets start to fade. It delivers 336 lb ft of torque and a top speed of 140 mph or 225 kph. Powerful engines are characterized by low rpm's at high speeds, and at 95km/h the revolutions are astoundingly low at 1600 per minute, which is arguably the most economical state of this car.
The suspension
This is surely the best take on this car - the dampers in question here are none but magneto-rheological ones where suspension stiffness varies in real time. This is determined by the prevailing conditions and is controlled by an electric current together with billions of iron filings in the shock absorber fluid. You may not come across this kind of technology everyday and perhaps its your first time, but this is how it works: when the current is off especially on steady surfaces the little metals float about giving a comfortable and supple feeling. During sharp cornering, an electrical current runs along the metal casing of the shock absorbers causing the filings to bunch up together and stiffen the suspension, thus improving handling by eliminating body roll. You don't need to drive the exquisite Audi R8 to experience such a feeling.
Handling
Other Range Rovers will have five road pre-determined conditions ranging from snow to off - road and though the Evoque hasn't such, it has got style of its own. Find a road winding like a puff adder's back and neither the steering nor the suspension nor the tyres will give in - absolutely remarkable! You will also be impressed that steering at 50mph yields no understeer, tyre squeal or body roll. The engine is also so quiet that pedestrians may have to look back not because they heard the engine purr but because they heard you speaking to the passengers!

Criticism
This may be the most composed mini SUV, but it gets really uncomfortable at speeds superceding 130mph. The tapering roofline robs rear passengers of headroom as well as rear viewing due to the small size of the rear window. The window shoulder line is a bit high, and first time in the car yields some hineous feeling that requires some getting used to. The massive side mirrors may also create huge blind spots especially at junctions, thus necessitating the use of the blind spot information system (BLIS). The looks also negate a feminine outlook that embarasses Range Rover's masculinity legacy, leaving one to wonder if the pretext is attributed to the designer. I wonder what we will be saying when Kim Kardashian designs an Hummer H4 that can't be differentiated from a Suzuki jimny.
