I’ve mentioned that my first Nuzlocke was Platinum. Here’s my winning team.

When I first heard of Nuzlockes several years ago, I thought, "why would anyone do that to themself?" But when I saw Alpharad's Nuzlocke videos, they started to seem kinda fun. I started watching Pokémon Challenges, beginning with his reactions to the Alpharad videos. Between his reactions, commentary, and tier lists, Nuzlockes didn't seem so scary anymore.

In the late spring/early summer of 2022, I had just finished a vanilla run of Platinum. Pchal said that the best game to Nuzlocke first is your favorite/whichever you have the most game knowledge of. So I finally made my choice. I moved all my Pokémon forward to White, wiped the save file, and began my first Nuzlocke. Let's talk about the final gauntlet.

Looking at my team, you might ask, "Cooper, why would you bring in a Flareon? Flareon sucks ass in Gen IV." Yeah, you're right. But I had lost all my other Fire types and really needed some coverage against Aaron's Bug types. Believe me, I went in with several plans and contingencies. I studied each team ahead of me, took note of their weaknesses and non-STAB coverage moves, and made the best possible team out of my remaining Pokémon.

Bear in mind that I lost all but one of my strongest mons in the final Cyrus fight, then lost that one just after. I was scratching the bottom of the barrel. A fair share of that 141 hours came from grinding up a brand new team to level 50 to tackle Volkner, then losing a few on Victory Road and against Barry, and grinding up the stragglers to level 62.

So I took this skeleton crew to the Pokémon League. As I proceeded through the Elite Four, my team sustained heavy losses. One by one, they fell. Zaggy, Drae, and Episode4;2 never saw the light off day again. It was doubly heartbreaking losing Drae. She knew Destiny Bond, which was one of my contingencies for taking down Cynthia’s Garchomp.

Also, because I don't have one original thought in this head, Drae was a reference to Alpharad's FireRed Nuzlocke. His Mankey died, then he named the Ghastly he caught later after it. So Drae was the ghost of Deluxe Rae, the Luxio who I lost to Mars's Purugly early on in the run. (Episode 4;2 is itself a reference to the Alpharad Deluxe let's play of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon).

Back to the Elite Four. I went into the Cynthia fight with only Grund, Craig, and Beep Boop left alive. I had barely made it through on my vanilla run, and that was when I had Giratina on my team and revives. The piano had my heart pounding. She sent Spiritomb out and we started the most thrilling and scary Pokémon battle of my life.

In the end, only Grund and Craig made it out. As I mourned the fallen, my heart swelled with pride. My first ever Nuzlocke, beaten. Just weeks earlier, my three-year-long relationship came to end. It's one thing to gradually fall out of love until it doesn't work anymore. It's another to be the one that has to fall out of love after the breakup. I really, really needed a morale boost.

I owe a lot to Zaggy, Drae, Beep Boop, Grund, Craig, Episode4;2, and everyone who didn't make it to the Pokémon League. Henth the Quagsire, Sun the Monferno, and so many more. Scrungus the Togekiss most of all. Raised from an egg to be the sole survivor of the final battle against Cyrus. Thank you, guys. The victory you delivered me helped me through the hardest summer of my life.

Cynthia has successfully been hyped up as one of the strongest trainers in the entire series, as nostalgic players of DPPt (and to a lesser extent, BW/B2W2) reminice on fighting her.

She inarguably has the strongest type diversity of any Champion, probably having at least one pokemon that'll be difficult to take down, no matter how you've built your own team.

And like Pyre said, this infamy in fan circles mean that her character themes are like warnings.

When youtuber lucahjin played Pokemon Platinum, blind, she'd managed to make it through the game without knowing the identity of the Champion - which most games technically keep secret, even if it's kind of an open secret for fans.

But because she'd already played Pokemon White, including the post-game, she had a pretty good idea. The tone of voice as she walks from the final Elite Four member, towards the Champion, can only be described as dread.

Her reaction at confirmation, especially, is that of someone who fought her equally challenging team in Pokemon White:

Even just Cynthia's cutscene theme (The Piano Before Cynthia), not even her battle theme, is more than enough to give anyone pause. She's strong. She's famous for being strong.

And Volo's theme is based primarily on a battle rearrangement of The Piano Before Cynthia. Here's youtuber Alpharad recognizing those piano movements, and again, becoming very worried about the fight ahead:

In terms of producing hype, Cynthia's battle themes and their decendants do something much cooler. They produce fear.
