Shadow and Bone 2x05 Review

Ok going to be honest this might be the episode where they lost me. The first 4 episode I thought were pretty solid and I enjoyed them but this one I don’t know why but I just didn’t enjoy it as much. It felt rushed but also felt like it dragged which I know is a bit of a oxymoron but there we go. I also feel like not a lot really happened. But anyway best to get into it, there will spoilers any book spoilers will be between two *. 

The Crows 

The crows whole mission this episode was getting the sword in shu han. However there was also alot of tension between them all, last episode Kaz kicked Inej out of the crew so there is the fallout from that. He also doesn’t tell her about the new job, I did think it was funny though when Nina says that Kaz would rather push Inej away than admit he feels anything for her and then questions whether she was supposed to say that out loud. Then Jesper puts his foot in his mouth with Wylan when its revealed he can’t read and this is clearly something he feels ashamed off, Jesper spends most of the episode trying to mend that yet somehow keeps making it worse. I did like the scene where Wylan calls Jesper out for trying to tell him how to feel about his shame whilst he himself is hiding that he is grisha. 

I did like the conversation between Nina and Zoya. It’s clear Zoya believes that Nina has abandoned her country and has dome resentment towards her for that. What is interesting is the line about Fjerdans burning grisha and how ‘you can’t unlearn that kind of hatred.’ I do think you could apply this to ravka and otkazat’sya views of grisha, at the moment Nikolai and Alina have this whole lets unite otkazat’sya and grisha and that once the fold is gone there’ll be no reason to hate the grisha but they have forgotten that unlearning the hatred otkazat’sya have for grisha is not going to be easy. I don’t really agree with Zoya’s statement that hate can’t be unlearnt, I think it can, as nina and matthais showed, but I think it is incredibly difficult especially if you’re talking about a mass group of people. It’s going to be easy to turn one persons opinion but very difficult to turn an entire nations. But this scene did make me feel really bad for Nina especially when she is talking about her and matthias choosing each other and choosing to be free together but then Zoya pointing out that now Matthias is in hellgate and nina has abandoned her country and asking if it was worth it, seeing that tear come down Nina’s face was really sad.  

We also learn where Kaz gets his touch aversion from and it makes perfect sense, I too would never want to be touched again my life if I had gone through that trauma. That scene in the teashop when Kaz starts to have the panic attack and Nina unknowingly touches his hand was really intense, but I do love that Inej saves him and gets him out of the situation and says that she couldn’t leave him. I mean Kaz and Inej are having some really great scenes this season. 

Darklina 

I feel like both Alina and Aleks become more unhinged in this episode. Alina in particular is starting to spiral a bit. She can’t find mal, she is seeing the aftermath of Aleks’ attack and poor Adrik does lose his arm, she is reunited with Genya and Baghra and has learnt what Aleks has done to them and all of this is clearly having a deep effect on Alina who is starting to act erratic. Meanwhile Aleks finds out that Baghra and Genya have escaped and that all the experiments were destroyed so that hasn’t put him in the best of moods. But what’s interesting is again like when he had an angry outburst after finding out the journal was missing, when he feels his anger rising here he once again reaches through their connection so he can see Alina, I really do think that he is using her as a sort of anchor to reign in these feelings of anger, she is what calms him and helps him regain control.

Then we have the mind palace scene between them where Alina is looking to sever the link between them. This scene was really intriguing to me because its kind of like the tables have turned and here we have Alina manipulating Aleks, I mean it was clear the she was manipulating him and honestly I think he did know that and you can see his wariness, her change of mind came too quickly for it to be real and he knows that. But I think at the same time she is saying all the things he has ever wanted to hear from her. Also I do think whilst she is trying to manipulate him what she is saying is true, its all the things she has denied up until now and I do think most of what she says is how she really feels. Like when she tells him he was the first person to see who she really was, what she was truly capable of. She was telling the truth here and she confirms as much later when she is talking with Baghra and says that he was the first one to show her that she wasn’t just a weak stick from Keramzin, that he showed her she was meant for more and honestly that scene she has with Baghra was heartbreaking because it really did highlight all the insecurities she had about herself before meeting Aleks and how he made her feel special and like she could be something but also how him then betraying her had such a deep effect on her and how she is struggling with that. 

Another thing she says that I think is true and something she has been in denial about is how mal doesn’t understand the power that is growing within her, this is shown in their argument right after this scene where he admits that she’s just been barrelling towards her goal of saving ravka and hunting the amplifiers and he’s just been trying to keep up. 

Alina does change tactics during the scene when she says its not all about power, she turns from talking about how a like they are to full on seduction mode. It once again reminded me of just how much chemistry these guys have, like you could feel the want between them. We also got Aleks saying the ‘wanting makes us weak’ line. The way when she stroked his cheek he leant into her touch and closed his eyes. I think a part of him was still wary that this was a manipulation but also he couldn’t help but react to her touch. 

So as I said I do think that Alina was being truthful in this scene, but its interesting because its essentially a tactic she learnt from Aleks, its the same thing he did to her in season 1, manipulate not with lies but with the truth. Alina hides her true intentions behind that truth she is telling him. 

*One scene I did hate though was when Aleks says the line ‘the whole world will hear it when I make her scream.’ The reason I hate it is because its nearly identical to a line from the second book that the Darkling says to Mal. Only hear they have completely changed the meaning and tone of it. In the books it is very much an innuendo and it happens right after Mal reacts with jealously to seeing the darkling saving Alina from tripping. LB even confirmed that it was an innuendo in an interview she did. But here they’ve twisted it into something violent and hateful. Which as a darklina and a book reader who found humour in that scene, as you were supposed to, I am really disappointed the added the line but in this way. I would have preferred they had left it out.* 

Genya and David

 Oh poor Genya she really had an emotional episode. I hated that she felt the need to hide from david. But I did like the scene where she confronted the Queen and told her how she was able to poison the King. I also liked how Nikolai took his mother to task and held her accountable for the part she played in what happened to Genya. As Nikolai said Genya was under the Queen’s protection and the Queen turned a blind eye and even thought it was acceptable because he was her king and genya was just a servant. But the Queen was supposed to mother to all ravkans and yet she failed in that task. 

 I loved the speech david gave to genya though about how her beauty is her armour and how it was fragile and for show but what was inside her was steel. Which is unbreakable and doesn’t need fixing. Just the whole speech was beautiful. And then Genya saying that she was able to find them because she sort out familiar heartbeats was the cherry on top. Honestly the whole scene I am not ashamed to admit brought tears to my eyes.   

So this was one of my shorter reviews but honestly I feel like this episode was just pairs of characters having conversations and not a whole lot really happened. So on to the next episode.

Adrik had a love-hate relationship with Father's Day. Mainly because he felt like a failure in that sense. For the past few decades since he lost his son, he would take a trip where he claimed he was going to see his own father and mother. Who did end up coming together for him, but it was always because they knew what a shittastic mood he would be in. The day before the day he would be celebrated and showered with love, he always left the forest to drink himself into a stupor alone in a bar.

Perhaps, it was unfair to his own father to spend time with his only son, picking up the pieces of his believed failings. Selfishly, it had become a twisted tradition and one that got his parents together at least for a day. A day of anticipation for the fallout the night would bring. It also wasn't a lie when Adrik told his wife where he was going. Southland to celebrate with his dad at their favorite bar.

This time, before he could even get a proper buzz going, he thought he was hallucinating. Hallucinating a man on the stool a few seats down that looked a lot like his son, but older. Of course he hadn't noticed Adrik because the guardian fae's head was down, studying his bottle.

He tossed it back, draining the beverage before asking for another. Despite his attempts to clear the image from his mind, there his son sat a few seats way as real as could be. Since the hallucination wouldn't budge he spoke. "Benny, this is a new one. You being here. I guess my mind has officially conjured up something that won't fade. Which is probably not a good thing. But I miss you every fucking day. And I wish that you were really here having a drink with your old man. Instead of me talking to myself and the ghost of you."

HeartrENDing | E.N.D. | Trial 4-2 | RE: Tools, Jae-min, Akito, Erik A

From her little anger corner, END’s energy is still too wound up. She doesn’t want to be here. Cosette was bad enough, when it was just a friend she sort-of knew weeks ago, but now? Ae-ra, Eureka, Erika L, all within the span of a week and some change. Her skin feels too tight, she just wants to get out of here and run and run and run.

Through it all, it’s not until Erik A’s ribs are mentioned that she looks up at all. Right…. God, she did that, didn’t she? The hot anger in her is dampened, tempered to a manageable condition, but only by the cold in her stomach as she realizes just how badly it’d become for Erik A. What if he’d gone through with it? If it hadn’t been for a coincidence of Adrik and the timing…. The last thing she would have done or said to him would’ve been breaking one of his ribs.

“Fucking hell…. Erik A, I'm sorry, I should’ve tried harder to get you to check it out, I just…. Wasn’t myself. I know that’s true for all of us, but…. God damn, I’m sorry.”

It’s all she can offer at the moment, with them all stuck here. To do more, to offer comfort in the middle of a trial…. It would only eat at the limited time they have, and everyone would feel worse if they got it wrong. Especially…. Well, she can’t imagine that point update has Calluna in any kind of charitable mood. So… One more quick point to address before moving on.

“Also, yeah, knock it off, Akito and Jae-min. We don’t have time to inflate your ego, and you don’t have to respond to every insult just because it’s there. Get in fights on your own time.”

Her tone is flat, and she drums her fingers on her ruined podium.

“I need to calm down more before I can really think too hard about who was where, but as for those plans? They're real detailed–Whoever did it is pretty smart, they had all the angles and calculations figured out. At the very least, you’d have to be pretty good at math for that sort of thing, if nothing else.

Also….. A drill and its drill bits was left at the leftmost aisle, basically right below the wheel, on one of the shelves. I dunno if they just left it there after mounting it, or if they ran off in a hurry after the murder happened, but I’m not sure why they’d have left something so important to the trap there. 

Speaking of, according to AION, a total of twelve tokens worth of tools were bought in the last twelve hours by multiple people. The drill is two, the pliers in the x-ray machine are two, the screws are one… but that still leaves seven token’s worth of tools unaccounted for. Also, I should mention there was a paring knife missing from the kitchen, and red in the water of the morgue’s sink. I dunno if those two bits are connected, but I’m guessing whoever was bleeding or had blood on them, rinsed it off in the morgue.”

Zoya helping alina sit down on the bed after she found out mal will die or something, whimpering in the dark and squeezing alina's hand, telling jokes to lighten the mood, hugging nadia and adrik, sharing advice with alina, giving alina that note, hugging genya and almost crying over that, missing tamar and using twin axes for her, buttoning nikolai's shirt because his hands were shaking but keeping her voice brusque, leaving the light on for nikolai. I love caring and soft Zoya . Zoya also proves you don't have to be a nice person in order to be a good person.

ANTONIN DOLOHOV is a 26 year old PUREBLOOD, a former SLYTHERIN, and a HITWIZARD who is a DEATH EATER and uses HE/HIM pronouns. They are categorized as CODE ONE. They are currently CLOSED.

HISTORY.

His mother was alone when he was born, his father busy ruling over the magical bratva. He had stared up at the young woman who held him in her arms, as she’d whispered about the greatness that he would wield. Volchonok, she’d said, her wolf cub.

Antonin was born not far from Moscow. Naturally, Antonin was sent to Durmstrang where he was practically royalty. The professors feared him and the wrath of his father, whilst his peers all but worshipped him. For everyone knew his father and what he could do. Adrik Dolohov, The Pakhan, the boss of the magical Soviet underworld. A cesspool for corruption, too far entwined with politics to be touchable and as a result, Antonin was much of the same. It was in his 5th year that his father deemed it necessary to send his only son to Hogwarts. He’d been initiated the Summer previously, beat to almost a pulp, tortured to see how much the heir could withstand. The move to England would be a tactical one, for there were whispers of dark activity stirring in the United kingdom and Dolohov senior hoped that in having his son closer to all the action, he would have all the necessary intel at his fingertips. Antonin was naturally sorted into Slytherin where his ambition was fed and prospered. Initially the young heir did not take the change to Hogwarts well. While he had always had a temper, it was positively volatile in this foreign land. It took him a complete year before he stopped requesting his mother send him his favourite Russian sweets and another 6 months before he realised that he truly did enjoy leek pie. However, it wasn’t simply the English food that kept him in the country, but a man named Tom Riddle and his cause.

Antonin’s father agreed to allow him to stay past his schooling years, seeing that it would indeed benefit them both. While it’s expected that Antonin is to one day return home to take over his father’s role as Pakhan, Antonin is becoming more and more accustomed to life in London. Antonin would rather be in the thick of the action rather than sit in meetings all day and watch as others fought in his place.

Like a lit fuse it’s only a matter of time before Antonin ‘loses it’ at something or someone. If he’s in a particularly foul mood it may just serve your best interests to stay clear of the man if you want to escape with all your limbs intact. First, there’s the quiet brooding anger that simmers beneath the surface. It only takes an instant for it to turn into a full blown display of cursed words and flying furniture. He’s mostly able to let off most of his steam at work, but even hit wizards have slow days. It’s the muggle underground fist fighting clubs of London where Antonin truly lets himself go. But don’t expect him to explain where he gets his fresh cuts and bruises from.

Russian, Antonin’s mother tongue. Perfectly his, the sharp timbre of a tiger meeting the sweet curves of a Tchaikovsky piece. There’s a beauty to Russian which Antonin believes is absent in English. Words that don’t have the same meaning, lost in a river niceties and harsh consonants. Still, Antonin learnt English well enough, his parents telling him that it would be useful. He still occasionally struggles with some phrases and pronunciations but for the most part he is fluent in both languages.

Antonin is a man of very few words and when he does speak it is hardly ever about himself. Often the gossip surrounding him is wild and scarcely credible. But Antonin doesn’t mind being spoken about, the more insane and crazy the rumours, the better. Let him be feared for there is nothing more powerful than fear.

CONNECTIONS.

WENDY SLINKHARD: Tracking. Ever since the half blood was assigned to Antonin, he’s been her shadow. The witch is smart, careful to never slip, almost too careful. There’s something about her that both infuriates and intrigues Antonin. An all too familiar fighting spirit that sometimes even makes Antonin pause. He doesn’t know how long he’ll keep watching her quietly, he didn’t get his nickname ‘terrible Antonin’ from simply watching his enemies. Because someone like Wendy has to be hiding something. He briefly remembers her from Hogwarts, he had to admit she almost always gave it back to those who taunted her. At school, Antonin had always been an observer first, maybe he let her off easy then but he wont be so forgiving this time around.

RODOLPHUS LESTRANGE: Best friend. They were the first person Antonin met when he first arrived at Hogwarts. Rodolphus recognised his power and Antonin was quick to return the sentiment. One more terrible than the other. Brothers in blood, but even Antonin has begun to notice the mad glint he sometimes gets in his eyes. Rodolphus, who had always been trying to get Antonin to ‘loosen up’ and ‘relax’, is now the more uptight and unwilling to compromise. Rodolphus has a new sort of hunger, which Antonin suspects is linked to the more time he’s been spending with the eldest Black girl, that seems like it can never be satiated. Antonin worries that even with the war over he loses his humanity by the day.

MIKHAIL VULCHANOV: Childhood friend. They were toddlers when they first met. Mikhail is the calm waters to Antonin’s brewing fire, always holding him back by the shirt as Antonin’s feet dig into the earth beneath him. The hardest part about transferring to Hogwarts had been leaving Mikhail behind at Durmstrang. Antonin’s glad that Mikhail’s here now, somehow Antonin’s always felt most like himself in Mikhail’s presence. Their normality a breath of fresh air that lacks any need for pretence, something that is so rarely found in the rest of his relationships.

ANUSHKA DOLOHOV: Sister. His baby sister. At first he didn’t want her to come to London; he’s only worried about her safety here even though the war is supposedly over. Back home she has their father and his men to protect her, here it’s just him. She’s definitely grown up since they were both children running through the hallways of their Moscow mansion. Antonin knows she worries about him too. After all Antonin’s kept Anushka at arm’s length for years so that they don’t learn from him. He always hoped that she would at least turn out better than he did, but after all, she is also your father’s daughter.

Let’s start with Ivan first! He’s an old oc but one that I really like!

Ivan Morozov is his full name! He’s in mid thirties, probably 34. He’s about 5 feet 11 inches, with black hair and green eyes. And he has a small little ponytail! He lives in Salevski a fictional country that I’ll explain in more detail later. He has two main outfits, his military uniform and his casual wear (which is just a turtleneck sweater with a tie and jeans) i have some old drawings of him which I’ll redraw in the future

Ivan has a wife named Daina too! Before she met Ivan she was a painter. Her art didn’t sell at all though. So she was left on the streets. Ivan saw her and decided to buy some of her stuff. Daina was so grateful for him and she agreed to meet him afterwards for a drink. Eventually Ivan falls in love with her and they soon start meeting everyday and start dating where Ivan lets her stay at his house They eventually got married and had a kid.

Ivan’s mood is basically: If you insult my wife, I’ll first cry, then come back and kick your ass!

Ivan also has a son named Adrik who looks up to him so much. He also says how he wants to be a soldier just like his father. Ivan cares for him a lot. Even though he doesn’t really like the fact that the kid wants to be a soldier since he knows it’s dangerous. He just hopes the kid will grow out of it.

Before the war he worked at a newspaper company writing stories. He really enjoyed the job and always looked forward to it. Despite all the problems he had whilst working there. The reason he joined the war was because he was a patriot of his country and wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps (since his dad was in the army) He also wants to protect his family from the war and believes that if he joins, he can help them stay safe.

Ivan has a sister named Natasha who he hates. They’ve always disliked each other and with Natasha always asking Ivan for money and never paying him back, it makes him really angry. (Even if Natasha has a reason for why she does it, which we’ll talk about later) Daina is usually the peace maker when they get into their many, many fights.

While in the war Ivan meets two men, one is a little older then him, about 37 named Pavel. The other is far younger, probably 30 named Viktor. They slowly become very close friends and help each other during the war. (We’ll talk about them later)

Ivan at heart is a man who cares about his wife and kids mostly. He works to provide and protect them under any circumstances even if they seem harmful in the longrun. He tends to think shortterm and doesn’t really look at the big picture at times. He can also be really argumentative and angry.

Stay Winning Jae-min | Trial 4.1 | Re: Adrik, END

Ah yes, this was surely a development, suddenly having his memories thrust back into his mind against his will wasn’t exactly an easy experience, and on one hand it definitely made him feel a lot less insane, but there was also this strange feeling of… euphoria. Jae-min had just gone from feeling like the scum of the earth to remembering every success and joy in his life, along with some not so fun memories. But by far the overwhelming feeling in his mind was elation that not only was he not a failure in life, but also his girlfriend would probably remember him now. That was nice too.Regardless, because of this, listening to the trial hadn’t been too easy, he was caught in his own head for a little while, but a little bit into Adrik starting things off he caught back on and decided to retrain his attention onto the discussion at hand. Though starting at alibi’s was certainly a choice to be made. He crossed his arms and just nodded along, looking over to END as they took over from where Adrik left off. He took a breath and ran a hand down his face, rubbing his eyes a moment and pinching the bridge of his nose.

“Right right right… lots of favours and things being bought, lots going on and obviously we can determine answers to a bit, but I guess I’ll bounce off what everybody else is starting on.”

He puts a hand to his chest, there was a certain confidence to his tone again, though it was overshadowed by a certain degree of annoyance to have to go through this song and dance once more.

“I personally woke up pretty early, around 4 or something, don’t remember really, but that’s usual for me, the only person I saw awake at that time was Eiri leaving her dorm, other than that, my alibi is pretty much just what Adrik said, I worked out most my morning, went up to the third floor, saw Erika L going to the library and didn’t bother giving her any attention.” He puts a hand to his chin to think for a moment, there wasn’t much else he had to add, and keeping track of times seemed boring to him so he didn’t bother just like every other time he had given his alibi. He always needed some pushing to share details, it wasn’t anything new.

“What matters is that AION wasn’t just pulling the sheets, it was on some kind of sound queue right? A verbal signal specifically… should be important to figure out what that might be.”

He chuckles to himself a bit, putting his hands to his hips.

“Gotta say though, using the bot to commit a murder… pretty clever.” He could complement a good idea when he saw one, even if it was in poor taste. “Doesn’t change the fact that we’re gonna need to figure out the details of the how and why of all this but at least it seems more complicated than just figuring out alibis. Who knows if the killer was even in the room.”

He hums a thought to himself a bit further before shrugging, he didn’t have much more to add it would seem, he was as unhelpful as always, just sort of thinking of a final point to push forward before ending his speech.

“Oh, I wanted to mention it because it was something I think I uniquely could know, but it’s about that key, the one on the shelf that Akito stole like a little bitch. Firstly, checking every lock was a waste of your time, because I could tell from just one look that it couldn’t fit any of the locks that we’ve seen so far in the facility. Secondly, Rose said it wasn’t one of the keys from their motel key collection, meaning that naturally, this is somebody’s personal item that they brought with them here or something.” He nods. “As for why you can trust what I say, well that’s because if there’s anything I’m good at it’s locks and keys, I mean, I was a petty thief, I know a thing or two. Naturally I’m in a pretty good mood so you’re welcome for sharing something so valuable. You can thank me later.”

Mad Max: Fury Road | Erik | Voting Result Reaction

Holy shit.

He'd come to most of the same conclusions that Erik A had, but figured they'd get an explanation for Eureka's motives after the votes were read, whatever they were. The main objective had been simply to avoid a double mistrial and prevent anyone who wasn't involved with the case from dying. He promised himself he would listen for Eureka's explanation. Maybe she was actually high on something and fucked up big time, and refused to admit to the murder out of embarrassment that she had done so while tripping.

But no. Oh god no, if they hadn't succeeded thanks to the combined efforts of Kenshin, Adrik and himself, all of their important people would've died. Sure, for some people that might have been a bittersweet blessing, but for several people including him that was the absolute worst outcome. Any trace of sympathy for Eureka expired that very moment, because while he was willing to conceded that she had an understandable reason for wanting her sister-clone-whatever dead, not at the cost of so many other actual loved ones. Not his mother.
