hear me out. I made several headcanons that got me really attached to the guy, who is Budwin. At first I was like "wouldn't lazy boyfriends be funny" and then got to "actually they are so sweet wtf" where I really liked the idea of Budwin being once a famous singer of sorts but the career didn't bring him joy at all so he went into a life where he does have joy but then people forgot about him and barely anyone cared about the fact that he's finally happier now, healing from the way he felt at the time but then through interesting circumstances he meets Zak who is the kinda guy who would absolutely understand that and brings him a space where he can feel happy without the guilt that he was sooo much better when he was famous and busy and hardworking--- sorry I got so so long winded on this one, I care about them so hard

Before I continue: repeated rape and suicide mentions in this post, as well as ableist and homophobic writing. It's Wade, tho. So, honestly, all that's to be expected.

Honestly I don't even remember anymore what the concept was when I sent in the idea to the event planners, I think it was something like... The differences between movie!wade and comics!wade? So I rewatched both movies with only a week in between and then sat and read... So goddamn many Deadpool comics. I went through every single series he appears in starting in 2008 and made a list of what I wanted to read, what I had to read, and what I didn't think I'd get to. The list I ended up with was still... Ridiculously ambitious. I only had about a month left before the lecture needed to have at least a rough draft done, and I had only managed to read Deadpool's first appearance for context and fun. This is the list I wrote out in a server I'm in with some friends:

This is still, like, a whole lot to read in five weeks. My brain was melting by the end, and all thoughts of comparing this shit to the movie had basically disappeared by the time I sat down to organize my thoughts.

(Deadpool doesn't appear in Spider-Men, I just don't feel like cutting it out of the screenshot for no reason)

(ETA I also read Deadpool, Volume 2: Soul Hunter, I just forgot to put it on the comics shelf on GR so it escaped the screenshot)

What I ended up with was a lecture that was half factual overview of the character and his supporting cast, half thematic overview of the character and his supporting cast.

I started with just a vague rant on canon, because I knew the kind of audience that would show up to a lecture entirely about Deadpool. I stole much of the meat of it from thepandaredd on TikTok, but basically the claim is that with comics, canon is basically whatever you personally accept as canon. Because especially with a character like Deadpool but also basically any character with any history, writers are often going to disregard or actively negate something that was said earlier (you know, a retcon) and this is made worse by the fact that Deadpool doesn't know his own history. So whatever didn't make it into the lecture was simply... Not relevant to my discussion. Of course, at the end of the lecture somebody raised his hand and asked me about Thanos fighting Deadpool. I straight up told him I didn't care. I had already said that canon in this lecture is limited to the 2008 run, the 2012 run, the beginning of the 2015 run and spideypool, and whatever other random issues I had managed to fit in between.

The next thing was introducing Deadpool - he's a mercenary, he's got two major superpowers (healing factor stronger than almost anybody else's and breaking the fourth wall, which counts as communication with a different universe), he had cancer and the cancer also got the healing factor, he's insane. Then I compared his pre 2012 and post 2012 supporting cast - if you've only seen the movies, the pre 2012 cast is the people you know: Blind Al, Weasel, Hydra Bob, Cable, and of course, White and Yellow/the boxes. The post 2012 cast includes Agent Preston, Butler (who is the man behind Wade's first appearance and who brainwashed him and sent him to kill his own parents... harsh), Ben Franklin's ghost, Michael (a necromancer, and not the reason Ben Franklin's ghost is around), and Eleanor Camacho (!!) (among others). And, of course, White is revealed to be Madcap, while Yellow is revealed to be... Wade himself. I can go into detail about the different casts another time, if anybody's interested, cause there's certainly more to say here. A constant between both these eras is typhoid mary, who raped Wade, and Spidey, although he's more prominent post 2012 with the rise of the spideypool ship and, of course, their very own teamup series.

Now that we were all familiar with the basic facts of Wade's existence and his friends and family, I started my thematic analysis. The first slide was called "Yes Homo" and was just a brutal take down of the homophobia in Wade's writing. Again, I can talk about this at length if anybody's interested, my askbox is always open, but suffice it to say, the writing is plenty homophobic.

I then pointed out every single romantic or sexual relationship Wade has had has been with a woman, unless it's treated as a joke like Cable, and discussed the important relationships in his life. I also discussed Typhoid Mary more in detail here. And then the only canonical Achillean relationship Deadpool has ever had: Madcap. Again: more detail upon request. The point is: Wade's relationships are all toxic, brief, outright abusive, or all of the above. I got asked this in the lecture and clarified that he is sometimes the abuser, and sometimes the abused. Wade isn't a good person, but he's also repeatedly a victim. It's just... A very complicated subject.

Which brings us to Spidey. I had two slides dedicated to Spidey: one about Deadpool's hero worship of him, and one about their romantic/sexual dynamic. They absolutely are connected - Deadpool's admiration of Spidey as a hero is connected to his desire of him - but I ended up including a mini rant about how much I hate Secret Empire and the way Wade's heroes influence his path in life so keeping then separate was probably a good idea. Tl;Dr, secret empire Nazi!Steve gets Wade to do some terrible things, because Wade looks to other people to see the difference between right and wrong, and he's chosen both Cap and Spidey to trust to always tell him that difference.

Once more: I'd love to go into detail about this, but suffice it to say, Deadpool admires Spidey as well as admires him, and this is important and a big reason for why I ship them.

I then talked about Deadpool's family, his inconsistent backstory, and literally made people clap for Ellie Camacho.

Then I talked about his mental illnesses, which has absolutely developed over the years. Earlier on, he's pretty much treated as a schizophrenic, although not... Well. Clearly not one person did their research and it's very badly done. The 2012 Posehn and Duggan run presents him as having what would more accurately be described as some combination of bipolar and BPD; again, not particularly well researched, but still, in my eyes, better done. Either way, there isn't a version of Wade that isn't suicidal.

I closed with my discussion regarding Deadpool's relationship with Death, which you don't need to ask me to elaborate on, because I already have! But, you know, to reiterate: Wade is in love with Death, Wade is suicidal, Wade often confuses violence and death with affection and love.

some context, since you don't play: MC is a human, and Satan is the Avatar of wrath/literal embodiment of that sin, MC is an exchange student to the devildom (om version of hell), and uh they have a pact together.

s3 where Satan faces the bogeyman and it takes the form of Lucifer as an angel, Satan who has issues with his identity and viewing himself as his own whole person, and being confronted with his very real fear that he isn't anyone. made me fucking cry, NGL. he's just like me fr.

s1, when Satan snaps and is going to run away from home ~~because Lucifer was being a cunt again~~ and that scene in his room where mc turns him down for a pact, and he's losing control, destroying his own belongings, threatening mc and tee hee. I don't know what to say, I like it when he's angry. I wish this scene was fully voiced.

in his dressing for the occasion devilgram (basically a short side story you can unlock by getting certain cards); you and Satan go on a cute date to a restaurant and on the walk home, he confesses his love to you, and his whole speech is very sweet. I'm paraphrasing here, but he says something to the effect of, "I only have these brief moments with you, the memories of your touch, I know it's impossible because we are separate beings, but I wish we were one".

hate this card for real (not because of Satan!!! it's everyone else!!) but he has another devilgram, where mc is depressed about it being new years and admits to being homesick. Satan tries to cheer up mc by literally making date plans on the spot for after classes (and everyone else makes fun of or insults them, so he's the only one that even cares, wow). so anyways, the date is cute, I'm not that familiar with Japanese culture to say much about that aspect, but he did try to celebrate new years in a human fashion for MC. his brothers (because they're cunts) had switched out his drinks for alcoholic versions (when he made plans to ensure that they're weren't) and he's a lightweight ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ so mc helped carry him home, and then I can only assume he beat his brothers up for that stunt. anyways, I still liked seeing Satan because it showed how caring he is.

satans apology to mc, for re:the above scene I mentioned where he threatened mc. it was short, kind of blunt, but also no one had to force him to or convinced him to, he wanted to apologize out of his own free will.

in the HDD event: Satan takes you aside from the party, to express his love (in private and without interruption) and I FUCKING wish I still had the screenshots because he wrote a very sweet poem!! and I can't remember the lines anymore!!! ah! anyways, aside from being sweet, he also expressed being nervous about his writing and I hear that and simply remember that again dude has identity issues, but also he's artistic and finds art/writing very soothing and a way to explore himself so it's nice that he feels comfortable enough to want to include you in that!!!

in s4, where Lucifer was being a cunt again and trivializes Satan's trauma, and Satan loses it, runs away for two weeks, and is causing general havoc. and when you finally meet up with him, he flat out admits that he thinks that he's absolutely nothing and only a reflection of Lucifer and that his life has no meaning. I'm crying.

Hi there 🐝💕 Firstly, thank you so much for your amazing blog.

Secondly, I was a fan of SPN many years ago and fell out of it for a while, only having gotten sucked back in after 15×18 (surprise). Back when I was into it before, there was a lot of discussion about Jensen being potentially homophobic, and now I'm noticing that there's been some..... less than awesome stuff said by Misha, too, in terms of the queerbaiting on the show and having only acted Castiel as in love with Dean this past season.

Obviously the content of the show itself proves this wrong, but it still troubles me, and I couldn't find much about it online other than a few posts by people and one con transcript. Do you have any feedback on this, and would you mind sharing it?

I’ll do my best here, and I’ll try to track down some sources. also, idk if you sent this question to anyone else as well, but if you did, i’m interested to see what they say. if not, i am flattered to be your Trusted Source.

so, first: jensen re homophobia

I could be wrong, but I don’t remember him ever making any kind of “homophobic” comments OUTSIDE OF things regarding destiel that were construed that way by some fans (if i’m wrong, please let me know). I do remember him shutting down destiel comments, etc, and the infamous “?? no” which has since been debunked by the OP as having been taken out of context. (i can’t find the debunking post on my blog but if anyone has it please link!) with the shutting down destiel comments, he was definitely brash at times! but, I do think it’s also important to note that he and misha were explicitly told not to talk about it. and we know that jensen is (or at least especially used to be) a pretty shy guy, and I think destiel questions/comments being shoved in his face in a public setting- when addressing it could get him in trouble with his job- made him nervous and upset.

however, he took a noticeable shift re: destiel in recent years. for one, we know that he gave his blessing for the canon textual confession (again, I can’t find an og post in my absolute mess of late stage supernatural tags, but if anyone has the receipts, please drop them). I could add more of my own personal spec about how jensen shifted his acting choices in light of this information, but I’ll just move on. we know that he was excited about the confession scene. here’s a second post about that.

and re: general homophobia, here’s a post of jackles with pride flags, as well as a 2019 post from his aunt, who is gay. also, this is largely a shitpost, but I saw it in my jackles tag while looking for the above, and it feels relevant, so i’m including it. a little levity before we move on.

now, misha.

I am aware of misha saying two upsetting things in regards to “the confession wasn’t bury your gays, why are you so angry” Again, if there’s more that i’m forgetting, please let me know. The first was in this panel talk (start at 35:50) from November 22. Here is a relevant post about that moment (I also watched the whole panel live and agree with this post.) The second is this video on twitter, and the following thread, from Nov. 25. However, after several fans replied to him explaining why we were so upset, he issued this apology on Nov. 26. I wanted to give you the original link there, but I’m also including a screenshot with a thoughtful and important addition here. And here is a tweet about Misha finding out about The Castiel Project.

i’ve never heard anything about misha only acting cas as in love for the last season exclusively, so I don’t have any posts to expressly debunk it, but I do firmly believe that to be untrue, just based on things misha has let slip over the years

and for both of them, it’s worth noting that whenever they were asked direct questions about the show, they could only do their best to talk around things like queerbaiting, etc, because they obviously couldn’t actively speak out against the show or the network (like this). for example, we know that misha got a couple phone calls from producers on occasions where he toed the line a little too closely, and he commented how you unfortunately have to listen to the people who have the power to kill off your character (immediately following previous clip)

in conclusion

neither of them are homophobic. to the best of my knowledge, neither of them have ever made an outright homophobic comment. and in cases regarding destiel (again, to the best of my knowledge) they have both either changed course or apologized since making any unsavory comments.

there are also WAY more posts on all this that I didn’t include here. if you search the jensen or misha tags on my blog, or probably the blog of just about anyone i follow, you could look into it more

all that said, it’s also important to note that i am Just Some Guy. i did my best to compile this information in a relevant and meaningful way, but i have oversaturated-sponge-adhd-brain that has been actively following this fandom for a decade, and i’m sure some things got lost in there. so to anyone reading this, if i forgot anything critical, please don’t yell at me, i am but a simple internet jester, just like you.

and while we’re here, I’ll say that- while I do think it’s important to keep a critical eye trained everywhere- if we were going to criticize any spn cast members for unsavory comments, these two are certainly not where i would start
