Hi- okay- I’m sorry I keep seeing your og post about Stuilly being a proship and I’m so confused?
Because in every form of media spaces that I’ve been in, it refers to ships that are along the line of incest/🍇/and pedophilloic
And as far as I’m aware, Stuilly doesn’t fall under any of those categories??
So is MY definition incorrect?? (Genuinely asking I promise, I’m just really really confused)
you’re good. first and foremost, ‘proship’ isn’t a noun, it’s a belief. pro is not short for problematic, it’s just the opposite suffix of anti, because ‘anti shipping’ actually came first. let me give you a quick history lesson
so basically this all started because of voltron. in the olden days of fandom there were younger fans who didn’t really get media literacy and they started really disliking a particular ship because of its age gap. they’d frequently harass and attack people who shipped that ship instead of just ignoring it and blocking the person who shipped it/the ship tag. this hadnt really happened much prior. these people started putting ‘anti [ship name]’ in their bio and censuring people who came on their blog who liked the ship. then it spread to other fandoms and became more common, with the term eventually just becoming a broad ‘anti ship’ to refer to any ships that the person personally found distasteful. as a retaliation, others put ‘pro ship’ in their bio to indicate that they wouldn’t censor any ships or art on their blog, and anyone was free to ship what they wanted. if they didn’t like it, they’d ignore it or filter it out.
the thing is, the only people who are actually focusing on incest/age gaps/rape are antis. proshippers literally only care about people being able to ship/write what they want and not be censored, because censoring art is NEVER a good idea (it’ll always lead to censorship of stories about lgbt people, disabled people, women, etc. and was a common practise in ww2). most proshippers find age gap/rape/whatever to be really uncomfortable as well, but they support its right to exist in fiction. the only people who are actively equating anti censorship with sex crimes are antis. there’s also an argument to be made about subjectivity, and if only sexually gratifying content is bad, then what constitutes something being sexually gratifying, wheres the line…
so yes, being a slasher movie fan or a stuilly shipper would make you, in part, a proshipper. since it shows that you have the ability to say « murder is bad in real life, and stabbing your homies for fun is illegal, but this is just a movie and stu and billy are just Barbie dolls for me to smash together. »
it’s not any different for other ‘morally bad’ content. rape is illegal and disgusting, yeah, but so is murder and torture and stalking. the idea that regular violence is fine but sexual violence is somehow inherently different is putting sex on a pedestal and is the belief that contributes to a lot of purity culture and victim blaming. it’s just this generation’s version of satanic panic.
if people have the ability to look at cannibalism or torture portrayed as positive in a movie, and still know that it wouldn’t be okay in real life, then they also have the ability to apply that to literally anything else. its not somehow different if it’s sexual.
thanks for being actually decent, ive gotten a bunch of really fucking nasty shit in my asks overnight and reblogs from people who do NOT understand Tumblr etiquette so this ask was nice to see. if you are who i think you are though, id suggest new friends who don’t ask strangers if they’ve been raped
