Bruised (Richie/Eddie) 2/12

Summary: It’s 1993 and the summer from many years ago is dead and gone. Many have drifted apart from the Losers club and its at the point where there is no club at all. The atmosphere is cold just like the winter months and the only blushes to be found are the ones that are caused from the piercing spikes of cold that heat skin up. Being a teenage boy is hard; especially for the two boys that now count each other as strangers. In which both boys make a plan, but both disrupt each others.

Eddie and Richie blinked at each other, stunned to see one another in such a strange coincidence. Eddie still had his hand up, but Richie still hadn’t took it. Richie merely brought his hand up that held the cigarette, taking a drag and allowing the toxic waste to decay against his lungs. Eddie visibly cringed at the sight, but stayed silent; he only continued to watch in hope that Richie would somehow step down. Richie took away the small stick, blowing the smoke out slowly and staring at Eddie through his large obnoxious eye glasses.

“Why are you here, Eds?” Richie asked, as if a day hadn’t passed since they last talked.

Which was funny, considering they had barely shared a word in two and a half years. They were both 17 now, not two 14 year old boys with hormonal issues and experiencing puberty. No, they were grown but not quite men yet.

“Why are you hanging off the side of the school ledge? C’mon, get down-”

Richie flicked the cigarette over the edge, watching it fall over his shoulder and getting lost in the distance to the ground.

“Why should I?” Richie tilted his head, his curls dangling to one side more than the other. “Your life wouldn’t change if I jumped, in fact- you were coming up here to jump yourself. Weren’t you, Eds? So who are you to say to someone that they should get down?”

Eddie felt speechless, the hairs standing up on the back of his neck as he realised that what Richie was right, who was he to tell Richie to not end his life?

“I’m Eddie fucking Kaspbrak and I’m telling you to not jump, asshole. We might not be friends anymore but I really don’t want you to die. Please Richie, just step down.”

Richie whistled in taunting amusement, folding his arms and raising an eyebrow. 

“Are you begging me right now, Eds?”

Eddie felt anger surge in his core, “What the fuck is wrong with you? Of course i’m begging! A guy I know-”

“You don’t know me.” Richie cut Eddie off with a monotone voice.

“I used to know,” Eddie corrected before continuing, “is stood before me and could jump at any second. I don’t want that happen and neither does anyone else!”

Richie furrowed his eyebrows, “like who?”

“Like- fuck, Bev! She’s your friend, right? You can’t just leave her.” Eddie squeaked, taking a subtle step forward.

“She has Bill, she’ll probably replace me as her smoking bud.” Richie shrugged as if it meant nothing to him, but secretly him being replaced could possibly be one of the worst pains that Richie has ever experienced. “Just like you did and everyone else did out of the losers club, isn’t that right Eddie?”

Eddie flinched, knowing all too well that his comment hit home to both of them. “I didn’t mean to cut you off, Richie.” Eddie whispered softly, looking to Richie’s eyes. “I can’t speak for the other guys, but I had a lot going on-”

“And you don’t think I did?!” Richie exclaimed, balling a fist, “Even you knew what my life was like Eddie, you knew how shitty it was for me and it’s only gotten worse.”

Eddie already could tell that he was talking about his neglectful parents, Eddie was the first to know about his situation and comforted him for days on end with Richie in his arms. 

“Richie, look I’m an asshole okay? I get it, I left you when you needed me. But please, I can help you. Step down.” Eddie cried again, stepping forward and holding his hand up helplessly for Richie to grab.

Richie fell silent, staring at Eddie’s shaking hand before glancing at his features. He was still the same Eddie, still having a baby face traced on his doll like skin, still having those brown bambi eyes of wonder and his hear was still neat in the same style.

He really was just Eddie Kaspbrak, he hadn’t let the world break him down into shreds whereas Richie had.

“Please, Richie.” Eddie pleaded, reaching his hand higher.

Richie shook his head, feeling a sigh break out into the cold air. “Sorry, Eds.” He finalised on his last words before taking a step back.

Eddie’s eyes widened, a shrilled yell piercing through the afternoon breeze, quickly reaching out with his inhaler dropping to the ground. Eddie grabbed at Richie’s shirt, feeling all of his strength pull back Richie as quick as he could before he fell back which would result in his death.

Richie felt nothing beneath his feet, but a second later felt the whole world against them once again.

Eddie pulled him forward, feeling the weight of Richie fall on top of his smaller 5′4 frame. Both collided against the school roofs concrete, on top of one another with a little grunt leaving their lips.

After a moment of silence, Richie finally erupted.

“Eddie what the fuck?!” Richie had tears in his eyes, threatening to spill but he would never let someone else see him cry.

Especially not Edward Kaspbrak.

Eddie felt emotions that he had never felt so harshly before tug at his heart strings and pulse at his templates, he had his arms wrapped around Richie tightly in order for him to keep him away from the ledge.

Richie felt entangled with the boy below him, closing his eyes to fight the urge to cry in a mixture of anger and sadness. His heart sped up rapidly, feeling Eddie hold tighter against the clothes on his back with his legs wrapped around the back of his thighs.

“I-I’m not letting go until you promise.”

Richie winced, he didn’t want to promise anything because breaking them was the worst part.

“Promise me you won’t kill yourself!” Eddie croaked in his ear, gripping tighter and forcing his words upon Richie.

He didn’t want to promise, but he didn’t want to let down another person in his life. Richie remained silent for what seemed like hours, but those hours were only seconds in reality.

“I promise, Eds.” 

Eddie heard his promise loudly and clearly, but he still held tight- not to keep Richie from moving, but to help him know that even though those two and a half years were empty of each other for either one of them, Eddie was still there for him.

Half an hour had passed since the incident, with both boys sat side by side on the roof top against the small bricks of the fire escape. Silence remained the two, but the company of one another was all the comfort they both desired.

Richie couldn’t help but glance at Eddie every so often and ponder about the boys situation since they had last talked. He of course came up to the rooftop to kill himself also, this was common sense. Richie came up here to smoke with Bev almost every day and not one student would wonder upstairs for anything, so if Eddie Kaspbrak just so happened to come up to the roof top, it certainly wasn’t for a smoke.

His eyes were soft and staring at the clouds above, oh how those eyes said a story that Richie felt his heart ache for. Richie knew what happened around the school, how he was severely bullied for simply coming out to his friends and family. 

Richie wasn’t one of those people he came out too. 

Richie had to hear it from the gossip, just like most. Somehow the word got out about Eddie being gay, which lead to the bullying getting worse and worse as time ached on. Somehow Eddie remained confident on the outside, from what it seemed and pulled himself up each time he was thrown down. But after todays incident, it seemed as if it was all getting too much for Eddie.

Richie frowned, letting all of the thoughts roam his mind in realisation that this boy could possibly be just as bruised as he was.

Eddie glanced down at the pack of half empty cigarettes that were between both himself and Richie and his own inhaler. There was an actual contrast between the two objects just as there was between him and Richie as people.

Him and Richie were two completely different people and Eddie couldn’t ever see them being friends with their different habits. For example, Eddie loved everything to be clean of germs and to stay away from illness or diseases whilst Richie was practically smoking himself to death in order to get one.

Eddie laid his fingers upon the trim of the box of cigarettes and he began to carve his finger on the edge, feeling the ragged structure. Richie raised an eyebrow, saying nothing and just watching the small acts.

Eddie then took out a single cigarette, wincing at how it felt on his fingertips and how many illness’ the single stick held inside of it.

“Why do you smoke?” Eddie asked softly, lifting the cigarette up into the air.

Richie shrugged, re-enacting what he had said to Bev a few days ago, “I like smoking.”

“But why?” Eddie sighed, “Your lungs decay, you cripple and cough whilst cancer creeps up on your shoulder. It’s repulsive.”

“Like I said, I just like it. I don’t smoke to look ‘cool’ Eds.” Richie now stared at Eddie’s side profile.

Eddie stares at the rips in Richie’s jeans, frowning, “It’s a slow death.”

“Maybe thats what I want.”

Eddie sighed, putting the cigarette back in the box and grabbing some hand sanitiser from his pocket and squirting a dollop onto the palm of his hand where the same scar remained from the blood oath. Richie analysed it with soft eyes, his head tilting before lifting up his own hand and tracing the scar from the oath with his free hand. He remembered how he held Eddie’s hand in the cast, his blood on Eddie’s skin and connecting the two as one. The oath was to signal that one day they’d all come back together as one.

Maybe this was their early and personal reunion.

Eddie was too busy scrubbing in the hand sanitiser into his skin to notice Richie’s soft smile on his lips at the thought of him and Eddie talking again.

Everything was fuzzy about their childhood in the big group that they had, but if one thing was clear to Richie, it was the blood oath. Everything about that memory was so vivid to Richie and easy to remember, whilst the memories with himself and Eddie having sleepovers and crashing the arcade were hazed like a dream. At some point he even remembered a clown coming into play, but that was nothing more than a nightmare.

“I think your hands will be raw if you keep scratching the germ repellent into your skin.” Richie remarked, smirking a bit.

“At least I’ll be clean.” Eddie sighed, before finishing his work and patting his bare knees. 

Richie placed a sturdy hand on Eddie’s shoulder, causing him to flinch but settle quickly and looking at Richie in confusion. Richie simply pushed himself up, holding his hand out to Eddie instead- unlike the circumstance before where Eddie was holding his out to Richie. 

“C’mon, I’ll walk you home.”

Eddie lifted his scarred palm out, with Richie’s own scarred palm grabbing his and pulling him to his feet.

Even after all these years, Richie still remembered where Edward Kaspbrak lived. He still lived in that small button house that had a cozy atmosphere to it. He even remembered the exact route he’d take when he used to ride to Eddie’s house every night for a sleepover. He remembered the damn smell of Eddie’s house, he remembered it all. 

The two walked close, every now and then their fingers would graze at the other persons skin but that was the only contact that they had.

Eddie watched as the sun started to set over the several houses that were next to them, being only 5PM and in a gloomy November setting- it was bound to be that the nights were starting earlier. The streetlights began to flicker on one by one and the cold air started to spike at Eddie’s bare legs.

“Why the fuck are you wearing shorts in November?” Richie chuckled, looking down at Eddie’s quivering legs.

Eddie huffed slightly, “Because I hate wearing jeans or anything else.”

Richie cooed, leaning forward and pinching the boys cheek. “That’s cute, Eds. But you might wanna wrap up for winter, it’s gonna get cold.”

Eddie felt his face heat up, adding to his already flushed cheeks from the cold air. “Its not cute and don’t call me Eds- I hate it, asshole.”

However, Richie knew that Eddie didn’t hate that at all as this was the first time he chose to deny it out of all the times in the past few hours. Richie confidently wrapped an arm around Eddie, pulling him closer to his side to keep him warm.

“I’ll keep ya’ warm, Eds.” 

Eddie blushed, looking up at Eddie before down at his feet. It was if the days without Richie had never passed- he was still the same with him despite how Eddie cut him off along with the other losers. Eddie felt a true attachment to Richie click inside of him again as he didn’t protest against his actions.

“You may as well if you’re gonna be having your arm over me.” Eddie whispered, leaning into the taller boy with a little bit of courage.

Richie grinned down at him, holding his shoulder as they walked the same route the way their bikes used to go. But it wasn’t long until Richie’s smile was wiped away by the droplets of heavy rain that fell onto them and the concrete. Eddie gasped, feeling the cool air now become freezing and quickly splatter onto his bare legs. 

Richie noticed Eddie’s attire again, seeing as he was wearing knee high socks, shorts and a sweater. Not that good for this type of weather. Richie quickly stopped in his tracks, taking off his grey hoodie with the Guns’N’Roses sign imprinted onto the fabric and holding it out to Eddie.

Eddie’s eyes widened, his arms wrapped around himself and his hair starting to soak up.

“Richie- no, It’s fine. You’ll be-”

“I’ll be freezing, I could get sick, blah blah. I don’t care, you don’t want to get sick and you don’t want to be cold so just take it.” Richie then forced it into the boys hands.

Eddie nodded, quickly sliding on the oversized hoodie over his smaller frame. The sleeves hung past his fingertips and the trim went past his hips and down to his thighs. The smell of cigarettes and cheap aftershave filling his senses and making his pupils become blown out. Richie smiled as he wore a plain white tee and his black ripped jeans and some cheap sneakers. Richie quickly lifted the grey hood over Eddie’s head, it hanging down to his eyebrows and covering him from the rain entirely.

“There we go, you’re all cosy.” Richie smiled, feeling his curls become more and more tight on top of his head due to the wetness.

Eddie felt himself blush and felt his own heat radiate himself, he couldn’t help but roll one sleeve up and reach his pale hand out to Richie’s.

Richie glanced down at the hand with a raised eyebrow, but took it in his scarred palm and held it close to him as he guided Eddie along to his house.

The streetlights lit their way up the path as their feet splashed in new forming puddles and soaking the insides of their shoes. As they arrived outside of Eddie’s small home. They both stopped, staring at each other for a moment and looking into each others eyes.

“Well, today was interesting.”  Richie breathed out, feeling his goosebumps grow more along the skin of his arms.

Eddie nodded, his eyes drifting elsewhere. “Please- please don’t tell anyone about why I was up there.”

Richie smiled sadly, “I wasn’t counting on it anyway bud.”

Eddie nodded again, fidgeting with the sleeve of the hoodie before curling his fingers under the trim- ready to take it off.

“No, no. You can.. you can keep it Eds.” Richie started, “It looks better on you than it does on me.”

Eddie smiled, his perfect white pearls showing between his lips as the apples of his cheeks tinted pink. “Oh really now?”

“Really.” Richie chuckled, shivering visibly but ignoring it.

“I might just keep it then.” Eddie whispered, removing his fingers and wrapping his arms around himself. “Thankyou, Richie.”

“What did I do?”

“You kinda saved me today, if you weren’t there...”

“Eds, if you weren’t there I would’ve jumped.” Richie started, stopping for a moment before whispering with a sad smile yet again, “We saved each other. Simple as that.”

“We did, huh?” Eddie looked at his white sneakers and smiled at the realisation, “Yeah, we really did.”

The two boys stood in silence for a moment or so, with Richie analysing the boy again. He loved how he looked in his clothes, it seemed so natural on him.

“Well, looks like that was meant to be then.” Eddie spoke up again, now looking up and adjusting his hood so he could see Richie better.

“Maybe you’re my guardian angel, Eds.” Richie cooed once again with a lop sided smirk and his eyes lazy, “Or maybe I’m yours.”

Eddie blushed, giving Richie the middle finger. “Shut up, that stuff doesn’t exist dumbass.”

“Well we’ll have to make it exist then, wont we?” Richie asked rhetorically.

Eddie laughed and took a step back away from Richie’s close form. “I’ll see you around then, Richie?”

“Yes you will Eddie Spaghetti.”

Eddie frowned quickly, “I hate that, don’t call me that.”

“I guess I’ll call you Eds instead!” Richie smirked.

“No-”

Richie blurred out his protest, gazing down at the boy with admiration. “Just get inside before you get sick, Eds. Say hi to Mrs.K for me, I haven’t stayed the night with her in a while.” Richie teased softly.

“Gross.” Eddie muttered, but smiled. “See you around.”

“Yeah, see you around.”

With that, Eddie turned on his heels and rushed to his door- fumbling with some keys that he found under the plant pot next to the front door and quickly unlocked the door, opening it and running inside.

Richie stayed for a moment or two with narrow eyes, watching how the door closed. He then relaxed when he saw a minute or so later that Eddie’s room light was shown through his window. A sigh of relief left Richie’s lips as he turned to continue walking down the path with rain soaking his form.

As he was walking, his hand jittered towards his hoodie pocket- only to remember that he gave his hoodie to Eddie. He chuckled, realising that he had left his cigarettes and lighter in there before walking on.

He couldn’t care less about his cigarette’s for once, in fact- the chainsmoker only cared about his old friend and how he was now back in his life once again to make his world turn from grey to colours.

Eddie had finished changing into his Star Wars pyjamas, now folding up the clothes that he had wore on the previous day to send into the hamper to be washed. 

He hummed, folding up the damp grey hoodie with a soft smile on his face. His eyebrows quickly narrowed in a thin line when a box dropped out of one of the pockets and onto Eddie’s wooden floor. Eddie held the folded hoodie in one hand before leaning down and picking up the box that had dropped. He then turned it over only to reveal Richie’s pack of cigarettes.

Eddie sighed sadly, dropping the hoodie back onto his bed and he proceeded to clutch the pack with both hands.

He wanted to mend Richie Tozier.

Eddie then walked out of his room and into the bathroom, staring at the pack that had warnings of ‘lung cancer’ spread all over it. He couldn’t help but worry for Richie’s health and mental health too. He sighed shakily, before focusing on the toilet.

He knew that he should probably give the pack back to Richie, but Eddie knew that he could never bring himself to give him the cancer sticks willingly. He only had one true option at this point.

He stood over the toilet, before dropping the pack of cigarettes into the water. Eddie watched the cigarettes float out of the box and on top of the water. Eddie then reached for the flush valve and pushed down on it. It was then revealed that the water started to drown the sticks, flushing them down into the sewers and away from harming a human.

It might only start off as baby steps, but he was going to mend Richie. One step at a time.

its weird how like my fave genre of games could be vaguely categorized as ‘nurturing things’ yet i fuckin hated every single thing of that kind that was pushed on me as a child

like hell yes i love pet games and games where you get customization and a sense of progress on building your character, and like even i like ‘parent games’ when they’re that sort of thing instead of just weird shoddy gross baby diaper changing bullshit. Like wtf who on earth even wants a game about raising a kid where you don’t get to see them grow up and graduate high school and make you proud in one of 63 careers?? seriously i am still so salty that this is such an underutilzed genre and i still have to play creepy anime fanservice dos games from the 90s cos thats ALL I HAVE. Why u showing my perfect sweet videogame child in creepy fanservice costumes I JUST WANT TO SUPPORT HER ACADEMIC LIFE

but anyway lol WHAT I MEAN IS

even though i LOVE that stuff i fuckin hate all that cliche ‘girl toy’ bullshit I love character customization but I hate it when its framed as ~lol girls just inherantly love fashion oo catty girl time~ and you only have this one stupid sexist creepy giant boobs doll and no customization except costumes and the only costume options are either sexualized or really stereotypically ‘girly’ and also you have to be rich as fuck to buy all these stupidly overpriced individual outfit packs and then you cant even DO anything with your barbie! at least in a videogame you can have the novelty of replaying the same cool fantasy adventure with your different characters, and like.. it has actual substance BEYOND just the customization! And I mean you can see your customization in action in a 3D environment and having a Story and Cool Powers and a voice and animations and all that jazz! And interacting with canon characters without having to buy all those separately too, and then do terrible impressions of the voiceacting from the show on your own... cos man that’s what i used to actually do with any ‘girl toys’ i was given, i saw absolutely ZERO appeal in having fifty ordinary houses where you can do nothing but sit barbie on a damn chair and gossip about husbands or whatever. Like fuck that’s already lazy and awful cos you’re telling the kid to make up their own reasons to find any enjoyment from the damn toy, but at least cliche ‘boy toys’ got like... a story template. And one that;s actually interesting and involves fighting n shit, and their accessories actually GIVE THE TOY NEW FEATURES but yeah like even making up a whole new story about barbie being a superhero got boring quick, cos she wasn’t remotely relateable or interesting. Like I’m glad that nowadays they do more with the character but even if they’ve fixed some of the predjudiced shit she’;s still.. not interesting?? just gone from cliche fashion boring to absolutely personalityless ‘good role model’ with no defining traits whatsoever. So I used to just destroy barbies or make her the villain in everything, and had a big box of naked barbies with missing legs and stuff while i gave all their accessories to all the pokemon and digimon. Still really pissed at how few of the outfits would fit on Impmon! Seriously it sucks that also all the good ‘boy toys’ were really stereotypically macho in one way or another so i was barely ever allowed to have them and i felt like they hated me even when i did get to play with them. And the only tv shows at the time that I liked that weren’t ‘for girls’ or ‘for boys’ were pokemon and digimon, which were still kinda treated as ‘for boys’ but didn’t even get the ‘boys style’ of merchandise. like barely ever poseable dolls that i could use in more creative play, they were just like collectables you put on the mantlepiece. I WOULD HAVE KILLED FOR CYNTHIA NENDOROID BACK THEN!!! i used to break all my damn digimon trying to fit them into lil outfits or throw them around doing battles, and then i made myself hella sad. I’m sad I don’t still have that super broken but extremely loved patamon transformer doll, that thing was THE BEST! like man why did they stop doing those after the first season?? actually digivolving your digimon was the best damn idea! did they get sued by transformers or something...??? and I mean GEEZ its not like I didn’t like cute stuff or hugging stuff or being nurturing or friendly or whatever people claim is the ‘wholesome value’ that female stereotypes teach kids. but man all that shit just ruined the stuff i loved! its so alienating! and why is it always super low quality and limited?? fuckin Baby Alive Really Pees And Poops,And Does Nothing Else Ever And Has No Personality. yeah girls you sure wanna see only the bad sides of nurturing and be told over and over that your life is gonna be nothing but this as soon as you inevitably start wanting to marry boys, which is totally gonna happen according to every damn adult, and will feel like a death sentence to any kid with any other sexuality. like I fuckin got my Official Digimon Tamagotchi and it was like the whole world opened up to me, like wow Pets Can Actually Do Things Other Than Shit. And i mean at least in an lcd game thing the pet shitting actually serves some damn purpose and provides resource management gameplay to decide what evolutions you get, instead of just Somehow You Should Enjoy Changing Diapers, You Little Fuck. I loved that tamagotchi so much i fuckin broke it too, like WHY WAS KID BUNNI KRYPTONITE TO TOYS?? the battery crapped out cos like i held it too tightly and the case on the back got loose?? so it’d short circuit whenever it went into sleep mode and wipe all my save data. and i still kept playing even though i could never digivolve anyone beyond their first stage before it glitched out. And then I got THE PLAYSTATION VERSION WITH ALL THE GRAPHICS and just AAAAAA it was like the best fuckin thing ever. and Monster Rancher!! and Princess Maker!! kid me could spend 60 straight hours looking after nonexistant babies and talking dinosaurs and cry like a damn bitch when they died so DONT TELL ME I’m lacking in healthy nurturing skills just because i don’t wanna be mr marketing guy’s fucked up idea of a straight woman...

also like even flash game internet dollmakers are better than the cliche stereotype dolls they were based on god I’m perfectly fine with collecting a bunch of things if they’re not forcing some offensive message down my throat! i still remember how confused and pissed off i was when i figured out that my little pony was supposed to be A Gender Thing too, like geez they’re fuckin horses. and the show was actually like THE ONLY THING i was allowed to watch that had actual adventures and fighting monsters and stuff! its so bad and minimal now that i look back on it, but like man it was all I had. • What are your inspiration sources?

Sometimes field recordings, sometimes instruments I find new corners of gear I haven't explored. I am a bit of a gear hoarder, but old 80/90s stuff as opposed to new shiny things. I love the Kurzweil K2000 its full of 80s/90s sounds but then you program it and get something contemporary, its Max MSP in hardware. I like to explore timbres and rhythms together so that might be having a drum pattern distorted in a cheap fx pedal or using delay to create new rhythms. I am a sucker for the Roland 707 as my main drum machine but the sound of it gets twisted and messed up. I find the grooves I create with the old drum machines feel more planted and make me want to dance, if that’s what’s needed.

• Tell us something about your workflow.

It is sort of split up into 3 really, I am really lucky in that I have a large room in my little (detached) house, I live in the middle of nowhere so I don't disturb anyone. I have a guitar corner with all my effects and amps setup. Then a keyboard stand with all my drums and synths near to hand - I stand up at this and get grooves and patterns down using hardware. Then a computer and mixer next to each other. I have a bunch of synths on my computer table too. I love tabletop synths so you can just sit and noodle. I tend to get something going on with a couple of synths and a drum machine. Increasingly its a small euro rack modular that i have been building. Everything is synced together and clocked from the 707, but I do some weird things with syncing - I get a 606 to do irregular clock from the tom outputs - this provides sync for the modular and a Korg electribe, which I still use alot and have a load of sample banks for it on SD cards, it makes some messed up horrible sounds and also some very punchy drums. This gets the juices flowing. I will record the jam into Ableton then start chopping or adding stuff. I like to use a mixture of analogue and digital. Posh and poor. So I might use the Pro One with a Casio keyboard but through a decent effects pedal. I think having lots of different sources in a track helps to make the sounds interesting. I started out with nothing, a four track and a delay pedal as a kid. Then a computer a bit later. I ran Rebirth and Cubasis, putting everything together in a sequencer. So having this studio is a complete luxury, a dream really. I managed to get this studio together by working my arse off and getting bits second hand every now and then. I am quite strict about not buying new stuff, there is too much gear in the world so I try and get a bargain now and then. I am a sound engineer by trade so I get offered kit quite a bit. The internet has helped also. My room is pretty full now though so its just a question of me getting time in here to work. I have a couple of different monitor options and a sub which is great. To be honest I keep things really simple. The main thing I guess is I use hardware almost 100% now. Some software compression and EQ but its all sounds from boxes, guitars or my mouth.

• How would creative rituals benefit your workflow?

Well I used to smoke a bit and have a drink to get in the zone, which I have stopped now. I just drink tea. Have a meal with my girlfriend and then get into a flow. I like to loop weird things I might have recorded in my job or just play with a machine until something comes out. Rituals are really important. I cycle a lot and love mountain biking. Also just playing the guitar and using acoustic instruments helps. I have a tonne of guitars and little stringed things. Acoustic instruments are ritualistic, they are the maddest things really. The more I think about a guitar the more it drives me to create something with it.

• How do you get in the zone?

Just relaxing, not thinking too much. I do quite a bit of music to spec, and also study at the moment for PhD in Composition at the University of York. This means I have to switch off really when making "my music". I just use music to relax often. As a way to create something that might be heard somewhere. I gig less now and don't release music much so its more of thing for myself and occasionally others.

• How do you start a track?

Sometimes I setup a load of gear and just go for it. If I have a load of tracks to do for a record I just get three or four boxes going together, maybe drums and two synths then hammer out a load of improvisations. I like to work quite fast so I will stay in this mode for a while. I don't use a pool of samples so every time I start a track I try and record new stuff. Thats probably crazy but it keeps things fresh and I always find out new things. I might have one or two loops from my recorder or phone but usually every things done in the studio.

• Do you have a special DAW template?

No I am not really into that. I have fave effects settings on hardware. Everything runs through a desk in the studio so I just patch in whatever I want and go. It takes 1 second to add a channel and assign an input. I use my whole studio like a template really. So certain FX for certain instruments. Then when I get bored I repatch. I have two patch bays pretty much full so they get used a bit.

• What do you put on the master channel?

Nothing until the end then its an SSL bus compressor or the Fab Filter compressor and a limiter.  Maybe a tiny EQ but nothing crazy, I like to hear the dynamics till the very bitter end. Luckily my room is flatish so I can work quite confidently in there.

• How do you arrange and finish a track?

Walk away and come back the next day, then keep snipping. I used to be terrible at editing and getting rid of things but now I am quite ruthless. Its funny how you change over the years. I'll listen to things and think fuck thats terrible it has to go. Come in the next day and get rid. I think thats part of being much more sober now when I make music and more of an idea of what I want. Quite often I have the arrangement in my head so I just snip away. I do automation by mouse and sometimes enter some fx with a MIDI controller. But usually my tracks aren't huge so its quite a simple process.

• How do you deal with unfinished projects?

Every few months I might have a train ride or a hard disk sort. I will go through old stuff and highlight them and try and finish them. I have an album I have just finished that was made like this. Just going back to old stuff until it was finished. I'm really happy with it should be out soon as I am mastering it currently.

• How do you store and organize your projects?

Hard drives - I don't tend to store things on the local disk. Then back up the disks, then back up those. Then the cloud too. Mixes get sent there. I am quite good at backing stuff up at the moment.

• How do you take care of studio ergonomics?

Have separate places in the studio to do stuff, guitar and bass corner then a drum machine/synth section then my computer/desktop synths and mixer. Everything's quite divided up. I love my desk at the moment - it has all the desk top synths and volcas and the mac, so I can just record a groove from synth / drum machine world then sit down and add a nice synth, the TG-33 gets used or an old Novation Nova and edit.

• Tell us something about your daily routine, how is your day structured, how do you make room for creativity?

I work a lot either at the University where I look after the studios and do teching for concerts and I work freelance mixing for bands such as Wrangler, who are quite a heavy live electro band. They tour a bit so I go away a lot. I have been getting into iPads for sketches. I have an albums worth of stuff done on it. Just need to mix it. So yeah I watch and listen to others a lot - recording or mixing live and in a way you get ideas this way for your own stuff. Always learn even when its other peoples work.

High pass filter everything.

Try and make space for everything in the mix by filtering. Don't boost too much.

Don't worry about all the gear. Just get the idea down and it will go from there.

Visit Cloud Computing: Digital Ocean vs Google Cloud vs AWS for the whole story

This post originally only focused on cost and user experience but after a real world case study and experiment I have some performance data and it is actually surprising.

The results of these tests convinced a previously skeptical client’s IT team into switching cloud providers.

How Is This SEO?

This may seem off topic but its on topic, technical SEO is imperative … you’re not going to rank number one on Google using Shopify or Wix.  It just isn’t going to happen.

Those platforms are not serious enough to deliver the configurability one needs to out perform a competitor.

It’s also apparently difficult to get solid advice on SEO Hosting from “experts” Best Blog Hosting for SEO is junk … reciting features doesn’t make a hosting plan the best…one quote notes that WordPress is already installed with InMotionHosting.com … so what!

Our web servers are preconfigured to install WordPress in every new account as well…it only saves maybe 5 minutes per user but for a web host that time adds up very quickly.  So thats not a benefit for the client as much as it is for the host.

You aren’t a web host so it’s not that big of a deal.  I’d like to hear about benchmarking tests they may have run to decide who is the best.  And we do … but thats later.

I only mention these to point out typically articles covering which ibetter focus on the irrelevant because the author lacks a technical SEO understanding.  Well, this isn’t one of those articles.

Features Aren’t Technical Specs

Unlimited bandwidth…sounds great but what are the limits?  There are limits, the infrastructure that a site sits on has limitations.  If someone uses a CAT5 cable instead of a CAT6 everything will be slower and you’ll find a speed limit there.  Bottlenecks are designed into infrastructure by error and these can limit it. Unlimited bandwidth means nothing because there are limits … physical limits exist and can’t be avoided.  So “unlimited” is a term being misused a lot in hosting today.

WordPress preinstalled saves someone 5 minutes but nothing else.  These aren’t important to the Hosting performance and way too many top articles on SEO hosting confuse WordPress’s selling points with the web host’s infrastructure.  That’s what this is all about after all, infrastructure and how it directly impacts a site’s Google ranking.

Google says that over half of all searches are now mobile.  Mobile is extra sensitive to speed and technical SEO matters.  Thats why its so important to set yourself up with the best infrastructure to build on.

Cloud Computing: Be Your Own Host

The industry standard in web hosting is cPanel.  No way around it with cPanel your support opinions are bountiful where as dreamhost.com has its own proprietary server software … its no better in actuality its just far less supported by third parties.  Ultimate SEO is hosted on a variety of cPanel servers that were easy to build and deploy, I made them from scratch and with templates but all in all there are 4 AWS servers, 2 Google Cloud Platform and 4 Digital Ocean currently powering hundreds of sites including this site.  Cost varies wildly…

Its important to note that your web host is honestly likely run on one of these three services.  Godaddy is … if you have their shared hosting your running on this environment.  You’re sharing their share of the cloud environment.

Why not just skip ahead and be the master of your domain….sure it will cost more than $3 a month … but that $3 a month hosting plan is shit.  You can have a decent VPS server for $5 a month with better performance.

We’re not going to mix apples with oranges though, this isnt about shared hosting plans and a VPS.  The VPS will win.  A good review between AWS and a traditional hosting provider is AWS vs Blue Host

Amazon Web Services

I don’t even know what I am spending, where and how it is being spent.  AWS charges you for everything little thing and no matter what steps you might take it may seem like rising project costs are simply unavoidable.

Their platform to work within is NOT intuitive and it will require some play time to remember that you have to leave the virtual server’s configuration area to select an IP address to then assign it to the server.  Then go back to the server and keep working.  ( that will cost you money too…each ip address, not talking about bandwidth that’ll cost you too … I’m just saying the ip number ) and then return to that original area to associate it.

Don’t even think about swapping hard drives and knowing what is attached to what unless you are prepared to write down long strings of numbers and letters.

AWS does provide greater flexibility than the others on options beyond just a virtual server…but unless you plan to send 100,000 emails a day to people you won’t benefit from their email service … as an example.

Technical SEO wise I’d give AWS a D overall. Infrastructure and computing power is an obvious A+, but it’s how you interact with that that weighs the grade.  More so AWS limits your resources with Throttling and Burstable CPUs … these sound good but the mean we’re only giving you part of the resource not all of it.

Poor navigation and the nickle and dime pricing is absurd.  Want to monitor your usage so you can understand your bill?  Monitoring costs more…its ridiculous.

They do offer reserved instances and I loaded up on those but still my costs never decreased.  AWS is so hard to understand billing wise that IT Managed Service Providers will offer free excel templates to figure out your AWS monthly costs. Think I’m being over the top?  Check out this calculator form sheet by AWS to forecast your expenses.  It is never simple when you ask how much and are handed a spreadsheet to calculate the server costs.

Heres something crazy…why my April bill was $167 but AWS forecasts it will be $1020 in May I have no idea.  I’m not adding servers…

Google Cloud Platform

Is easier to use and wrap your head around but it is considerably more expensive than either of the other options. For this simple reason…they receive an F. The additional costs come with less options and less features than AWS.

Billing is more transparent and you can understand why your bill is what it is at least.  But Google also makes unilateral decisions for you like blocking smtp and ssh access.  Sure its more secure but it makes email and server maintenance a nightmare.  You can add those to nonstandard ports in the firewall but then you have to keep up with an oddity.

Documents like this Connecting to Instances make it seem like not a big deal, but these will not allow you to move a file from your computer to the server like SFTP would.

They are expensive, offer less and needlessly shot you in the foot with their restrictions.  Thats why I stand by the F as an overall grade.  Now infrastructure capabilities … A+ no doubt about it…but you’re paying a premium and placed into a box.

Digital Ocean

I received no compensation or thank you from anyone for writing this … Digital Ocean is my B+ graded cloud solution.  It’s the cheapest, and they don’t seem to charge you a fee for tools that are required for the main product to function, unlike AWS and their static ip addresses.

They have the least ability and options outside of a virtual server.  If you want a database server that’s in the works unless you can use Postgres.  UPDATE Sept 2019: SQL Databases are now fully supported and available.  That’s limiting, but it is also not important if you’re just running a few web servers that will already have MySQL installed on them anyhow (if a LAMP server template is utilized).

Digital Ocean is the no frills, no surprises, cloud computing option.  The reason I have so many servers is because I am migrating everything off AWS and Google Cloud to Digital Ocean…it’ll be cheaper.  A lot cheaper…we’ll discuss performance in this article.

  That’s right… $20 vs $121, $177 and $120 from AWS, GCP and Azure.  I didn’t really consider Microsoft Azure just because I have reservations moving into their sphere or control where every thing you need to do is addressed by yet another Microsoft product that usually has little imagination in it.

Test out a server in each environment and I think you’ll quickly take to the Digital Ocean option.

But in deciding the winner of this debate I figure a more scientific method could be used….so let’s divide the debate into areas that can be scored and assessed.

Amazon Web Services vs. Digital Ocean

Ease Of Use

As previously noted, the Digital Ocean’s dashboard is very streamlined compared to AWS.  With AWS you have to configure your network, and several other parts such as the keys before you can make a server that’s accessible to the internet.  Digital Ocean you can literally have a server running in less than a minute from a single screen.

Base Cost

Digital Ocean’s costs are inclusive of bandwidth, hard drive size, ip addresses and more.  Everything you need to have a server is right there in one easy package.   Their packages include:

Amazon Web Services doesn’t allow an easy comparison.  Everything is charged individually it would seem.  They have a tool called Simple Monthly Calculator, its a spreadsheet basically … first off  if  you need a calculator it’s obviously not simple.

To compare something with the $5 option from Digital Ocean I used the calculator and a t2.micro which is 1cpu and 1g ram with a 25 GB SSD drive, with 2 ips and 1 TB of data transferred to the world costs about $21.49 but that’s also after a -11.00 discount … without the discount it was 32.49.

So at $5 to $32

But wait there’s more and this is the why you’ll switch to Digital Ocean.

Options

Monitoring and alerts can be configured on both platforms .. both allow scaling up and adding additional storage as well as internal networking.  AWS though has an expansive offering of options and wins out in this area.

Digital Ocean allows for credit cards as well as paypal.  AWS allows credit cards and bank accounts.  The difference then is Paypal vs Checking Accounts and since this is a cloud computing, tech product … Im going to prefer Paypal to a tool that has been around for hundreds of years.  So we’re going to hand it to Digital Ocean.

Each can transfer servers to other accounts.  I’ve only been successful in doing this with Digital Ocean and not AWS.  The AWS process is more tedious and you can give a server away that you aren’t an admin of anymore but still are responsible for billing somehow.  That sucks!

AWS only offers free billing support…although if you ask them a tech question they do tell you “as a courtesy” here is an article that might help…but tech support itself is out of your reach for free.  Digital Ocean allows you to message them and I’d assume some tech level of support for their platform without charging.

The winner is Digital Ocean over GCP and AWS.

but … now an added update to question these assertions…

VPS PERFORMANCE

Testing Digital Ocean to AWS head to head.

Two test servers with the same site exact site tested at the same time on the same tools.  In these tests we’re trying to speed up a client’s slow page load speeds.  We’re at 97% optimization of the site, we’ve unloaded some sliders but still 5 second homepage loads.  We are determined to be at 3 seconds…and we think we have the answer in addressing the client’s hosting infrastructure. 

But before we can make the switch, testing had to be done and we had to convince the IT team to look at more than just AWS.  As technical SEO “experts” we have to get their buy in to ensure the projects success isn’t discounted because we get viewed as just marketing people.  

Below is adapted from communication between Ultimate SEO and the client.

Two Part Question, then price considered. 

How many users can the server handle?

EC2 Unlimited – Expensive but it’s just a checkbox away in availability.

Same test on each by loadimpact.com.  Simulates 25 users for 3 minutes. Detailed results included after this summary. 

Server: Test2 On Digital Ocean

The average response time of the system being tested was 36ms, and 10497 requests were made at an average request rate of 59 requests/second.

Server: Test3 On AWS

The average response time of the system being tested was 481ms, and 4401 requests were made at an average request rate of 25 requests/second.

Findings From Server Load Testing

The AWS Server takes more than 10 times longer to server half the pages requested, at half the rate given to the Digital Ocean server.  So it failed before reaching full capacity of the test.

How fast can a typical page be delivered?

For this test we’ll use GTMetrix.com with 1 user 7 tests per server and then an average with the lowest score and highest noted.

Ultimate SEO ran the GTMetrix.com tests at the same time, that way it was similar network traffic and each one in its own browser tab.  * These tests are not reliant upon our local machine and are just between GTMetrix and the target.

Conclusion

In this test the AWS server adds an average 1.43 seconds over 10 tests.  In no test was AWS faster than Digital Ocean.  The fastest test for Digital Ocean was 2.7s with AWS at 4.4s.  Digital Ocean’s fastest is below our goal, AWS is 1.4 seconds above or 45% more than our goal.  GTMetrix gives both servers an A for optimization, meaning neither can be optimized more … its infrastructure and content now.  Each site has the same content.

AWS could do better but they appear to “throttle” performance much tighter.  Even using C class servers instead of T class resulted in lack luster performance.

How Does Performance Change When We Test A Web Server that has a separate dedicated Database server

Server + Database Server Configuration VPS

  Now that we’ve tested and found Digital Ocean to be the cheapest and fastest VPS lets try some optimizations and see if they provide real world benefits.  The easiest to test is the offloading of the database to its own separate server. Since this creates a dedicated database server I choose to build the database on a very small machine.  A $5 1 CPU 1 GB Ram server was created from a LAMP server and it was given an internal ip address and placed within the same firewall as the site server which also had an internal ip address.  Internal addresses did appear to save connectivity time and avoid firewall involvement.

This shows the blue line … response time as steady and unaffected by the growing requests and users on the site.  

  The average response time of the system being tested was 33ms, and 8716 requests were made at an average request rate of 49 requests/second.

  This wasn’t remarkably better than the original server but that server did show a couple brief spikes where this has none.  It would likely only be of real value when large amounts of traffic are experienced.

  GTMetrix shows individual page loads are unaffected by the SQL off loading.  So the benefit is again only pronounced when many requests are made.

Now i am aware thats all the current generation of SWRP but the freedom is very limited i'd prefer old school honor FFC above meter and dice but i realize there is a huge trust issue in the community which i gotta admit is somewhat logical considering the amounts of people that god-modded in the past especially the Sith and Jedi who all were SUPAH powerfull. Hell i'm a sith too but i hide it and play like Palpatine nobody knows i'm sith unless they are sufficiently alligned with the force to sense the intense dark energy hidden. 

 Eh long story short. Focus more on ROLEPLAY and less on DICE or any other system.

 In the end we all come to SL to escape the hectics of life adding complicated systems like CLOCKS [Large Events only as far as i heard ] does make me want to just walk away. Turfs work pretty neat but requires more consistent rules like Take 1 turf a week to prevent Big groups such as my [REDACTED] to Streamwall it all I can go on for hours but wont bother you guys ;) I love the casual rp on the sim that's what drew me in “

We’re looking at things like Clocks & Turf for revision or termination.  Those behind it are no longer with us, and we do feel it’s current version is too heavy.  The add ons such as that are not mandatory for players to know, they’re more for group leads and often something they can opt out of as well under certain circumstances.

The gaps are actually much less significant than they have been in the prior systems we’ve used such as SWT & Chimera but will look further into that.  I’ve personally lost to a 1 on a 5, so it’s not invincible mode by any means.

Build/Setting Related

Since the survey have added enough rentals to catch up on the waiting list.  While the waiting list is now empty they are all full last I checked so will add more.  The waiting list is why the boxes often auto-lock and do not notify.  When we do have freed up rentals and no list I let people know in Discord announcements. If you want to get on said list let Zenless know, specify which of the rental types/location.  Generally go down the list when one becomes free but if I don’t hear back from someone in 48 hours move on to the next person.

Worked on it with the addition of the RP scenes, currently there are 4, we may switch them up now and then, any player can use these for their adventures. As of writing this we have a snowy one, a shadowy planet, a jungle and a minimalist desert.  It often depends how many prims we have free how details these are.  Things are also added to them specifically for a story, etc.

Lot of similar themes in these 6 so I’ll touch on them at once. Our group leads have been great and have been the primary ones responsible for the high levels of activity.  On the other hand since the start we had a story team that did not put much time and effort in other than those who were also group leads.  There was a main story arch yet few if any segments were ever run, and when these people left they asked for their stories not to be used so we had to go back to the drawing board. We’re working very hard to get more people involved in stories/running stories, do let me know if you are interested as we’re always looking for more aid.  Typically we bring on people as mentors first, find out what they do well and help with stories if desired.

As some may have noticed there has been an overhaul of staff, much of this will seek to address any of the comments here. Everyone knows I say what I think to a fault.  So I’ll be transparent in my POV (take as you will) though I’m sure some are going to be unhappy I even touched on this.   The SWL Community was in bad shape after what happened on 4D for those who were here for that, I made a bad judgement call in some of the people I partnered with as our views were incompatible. I was very depressed after 4D (our prior region), and didn’t input as much as I should have when it came to staffing the sim, so they filled the staff with those who I’d consider their “friends”. Staff often became a battlefield of ideology between myself and what I saw as a circle of friends.  In no way am I ever a perfect angel, and there are patches that I could have navigated better so I am responsible for the conflicts within staff as much as the departed are.  Sometimes people just don’t work well together.  What’s done is done though and moving forward I feel we’ve been making a lot of progress in having a more cohesive team.  Still some rough patches as any sim with a decent sized playerbase is going to have it’s share of arguments, but I can say for certainty that everyone involved in leadership now genuinely cares about the community and that we’ll do our best to listen to the players and strive for consistent improvement.

The staff member who said this is among those who departed (who have been mentioned often here). We’ll strive for a fair environment for everyone/all groups where goal posts aren’t moved on a whim.

This one touched on a lot of things so put it in misc.  Pretty much touched on everything but “outrageous” in other sections.  What people consider outrageous is very subjective but we do try to avoid anything too crazy.

True.  If any issues with an avatar or anything else, a GM or Admin should be contacted.  Players hostilely confronting other players is often something that will be considered a minor offense which can lead to disciplinary scenarios.  If you need any help do let one of us know, it makes me very sad when I hear about someone being given a hard time over something like that.

In conclusion, thank you to everyone who filled out the survey.  This was the hardest section to give feedback on as it does touch on a lot of “drama” elements.  I’m not the smartest admin, def not the most PR or PC, I speak from the heart.  It means a lot to me that after six years and all the obstacles that people are still here. I’ll do my best to try to improve everyone's experience.  Please keep in mind we are a VERY diverse role-play community and it’s literally impossible to fully please everyone, sometimes the good of the many will outweigh the good of the few but the tyranny of the majority is also something you always try to keep at bay.   

SWRP as a whole has now lasted about fifteen years as you can trace it’s origins back to 2003 while the first groups and sims really got going in 2004 with groups like the Mandalorians under Dazzo Street,  Jedi under Marcus Moreau and others,the first Galactic Empire.  Then in 2005 sims exploded with Korriban, Sirius, New Holstice, Tatooine, the founding of GAR & DLOTS.   We may have had to do a lot of adapting and changing with the times to still be an active community, but fifteen years is an amazing accomplishment for any roleplay community.   We’ll have our ups and downs but I think we’ve proven ourselves to be as resilient as they come.  :)

I live in Florida and I'm a college student. I want to know what are good affordable insurance companies for college students or people in general. I prefer to know about those that are well known and have a long record history and not some sketchy insurance company. Thank you!

Do insurance rates always go up after fender benders? even super minor ones?

I was in a minor parking lot fender bender, more like fender TAPPING if you ask me, neither car has more of a scratch, I am pretty sure that she is more at fault in this situation because when we tapped i was all the way out my my parking space and she was only out about half way, hence why our bumpers tapped on both of our rear passenger corners. she has a witness claiming they saw the whole thing and that I hit her, but regardless of if my car tapped hers or her car tapped mine, I was all the way out of my space and she was the one who wasn't looking enough to not hit me. I was about to shift into drive right when we tapped, I had my foot on the brake, which is probably why we didn't hit hard enough to do any more damage than a scratch. ANYWAY she is basically making a huge deal about a small *** scratch on her 1998 honda in which i am sure that she is at fault for. in maryland, I have always been told that parking lot accidents are equal fault cases no matter what. she called me 3 days after the incident and also called my house number(which i did NOT give her!!! creepy) she got mad that I called the police for advice on what to do and said she is going to go through my insurance to get things settled. m my question is, will my insurance go up if she files a claim using my insurqnce info? even though the repair for her tiny scratch couldn't possibly cost more than 200 bucks? It is so small i feel like someone at a body shop could buff it out for even less than 100, maybe even 50. it just baffles me that someone would make such a big deal over a scratch that is less than an inch, especially when my scratches are deeper and longer than hers! you can tell by the direction that my scratch was in that she was the one who hit me, because of where the paint was pushed.""
