I got one of those automated job offer emails that was made with AI and they even generated a "profile" for me based on information scraped from my various online accounts (I assume). It said I prefer locations outside of where I currently live and that I'm willing to relocate for the right opportunity.

I never said that. If anything, I only ever said the opposite of that. You tried, Word-Order-Machine, you tried.

Behind the Screen Ch 6- Political

William felt like going on another rant. Here he was watching the channel all about what was happening with the government, and then they cut back to see what the lefties were saying. Fair sport, but those useless hunks of shit couldn’t lead a rock even if their lives depended on it.

William was a man who was starting to get old. He had been retired for about six years now, and already his hatred for it was shifting in loathing. He had nothing to do all day, but sit around all day watching television. So, he used it to watch the political channel all day.

His hair was starting to go, his hip had a slight ache in it that refused to go away, and he felt tired more frequently. His doctor recommended all sorts of pills, and potions to him. Whoever, he refused to take them out of spite for the doctor’s degree that he saw was obtained in another country. He was dead certain that meant it had been acquired through illegal means, and not through an actual university.

The TV finally cut away from the talking twats, and went to an advertisement. William used this opportunity to bend the chair back, and change the channel to he news. However, once the chairs back was moved he suddenly very comfortable and found himself reminiscing about his life. Something else he did frequently to pass the time.

He had moved to this city when he was a young lad straight out of university. Back in those days there hadn’t been as many computers, and technology as there was today. No holograms, no robots, and none of those damn tech stores that always he check out the latest piece of cheap holographic projection crap when he passed by. To this day he though the world was better that way. He had a degree in business studies, and because of this was able to get a desk job for a very successful company. His job at first was to monitor trends in the public, and how the business could adjust their tactics to ensure that they could get the most sales.

He was so good at this job that he was soon promoted, and before long he was sitting on the executive board of the company where his opinion mattered. However, there were a number of mounting hiccups that he kept encountering which soured his reputation somewhat.

First, there was a time where what he had said was not followed through. Then with all his rage he went to shout at the person responsible. However, what happened instead was he ended up shouting at somebody who was both an idiot, and barely spoke any English. He went straight to the superiors to alert his superiors of the problem, and demand that persons resignation. They said they weren’t going to do something that drastic, and then they told him that that person had gotten the job exactly the same as everyone. They then added some insulting line about how it was helpful to have them around when there was a situation that required someone who spoke that language. But if they couldn’t speak fucking English then how could they help in that situation? They wrote English. Then why wasn’t his order followed through. That was end of that conversation the rest of the board didn’t want to hear it.

William walked from that conversation annoyed at just how incompetent they were, but then several years later it happened again. This time it was someone at the help centre of the shopping sector. They too didn’t speak much English, and refused to no matter how much he screamed at them. Eventually a police unit had to drag him off premises.

When he finally got to the executive board he tried to push so that only English-speaking workers should be allowed to work for the company. He was quickly shown to the C.E.O.’s office for a brief chat. The C.E.O. simply called him xenophobic, and then said if he wanted to keep his job he should keep his xenophobic comments to himself. William was outraged, but knew better that to get into a full blown argument with his superior, and instead left the office with his mood at a contained rage.

However, somebody had leaked his outburst to the company, and he quickly became known around the office as Xenophobic Will. It reached its pinnacle when somebody stuck pieces of paper all over the office building one night. Photocopies of a hand drawn image showing him pointing at the viewer followed by the nasty slogan “I’m Xenophobic Will, and I want you to hate all immigrants with me.” They were never able to catch the son of bitch responsible for this stunt, but William knew it was a collaboration between all of the Non-English workers at the workplace. It had to be.

His retirement party was even worse there were quite a few people enjoying themselves just a little bit too much whilst the others were all deathly quiet. He believed this was all an elaborate set-up designed by those in the company who hated him. He could tell that they were celebrating his inevitable departure from this company. Whilst the deathly silent crowd were all of his colleagues who didn’t what to say about the wonderful he had done for the company. Because of him company stock was up 30%, and they were all richer than ever. But of course, his xenophobic comments had soured that, and around the office he could tell some people were saying “Have you heard Xenophobic Will is retiring.” To which the only response was “About damn time.”

He retired to his house where he quickly discovered that retirement was very boring, and lonely. He had never married so there was nobody to comfort him on that front, and he did not own any pets because they were just a waste of money that keep demanding attention. Attention that he in his business life had no time for.

After about five months of this he finally grew so lonely that he decided that moving out of his current home, and to a new one was necessary. He quickly began searching in the real estate listings for accommodation that meet his desire to be around. Naturally apartment buildings in the city caught his eye because they offered living space in an area that was overflowing with people. He tried looking for high end apartment blocks first, but they were either all taken, or cost a ridiculous amount of money. In the end he did spot the Moonlight Apartments being advertised, and after a quick inspection one day he brought one of the apartments. He didn’t care that they were small, it was just him and he could bring in furniture to make the place seem classier.

The place perfectly granted his wishes of being close to people. Every time he went out he usually ran into people that also lived in the building. He could recite most them by their occupation when they told him it, but he always had trouble with their names. There was the woman who was a screenwriter who as of late always seemed to be arranging something over the phone. There was the landlord who he enjoyed chatting up even though there was nearly always the scent of alcohol on his breath.

The one he fancied the most was that sculptor with the dyed hair. She was extremely attractive to him, and he often found himself fantasying about her. He didn’t care that she was probably half his age, she was attractive. He however was always too nervous to tell her how he truly felt even when he saw her in the elevator most days.

The people he couldn’t stand however were those damn kids. There were apparently two of them sharing one apartment, a guy and a girl. The guy he barely saw, but from the arguments he often overheard could piece together that he was a lazy arsehole who spent most of his days doing fuck all. The girl he saw frequently though he wished he didn’t, because she had a very thick accent. This was enough for him to want to try and evict her before she tried something nasty that would result in everyone being evicted and building closed down. This was rejected by the landlord every time, because he needed a more solid excuse. To top it all off she had a boyfriend that he sometimes saw. What would anyone see in that foreign bitch? He wanted to tell the boy to leave her alone and that he deserved better that her. Best to get out quick before she did something nasty to him.

All of this though didn’t help that there still wasn’t a lot to do in retirement. He was still sitting around most of the day wondering what to do. He had never been any good at video games, so he couldn’t do that. Instead he just sat around watching television. In the evenings this wasn’t that bad because there was usually something interesting on, but during the day the shows that were on were awful. There were advice shows that didn’t suggest actions to take in life, but rather ordered viewers to do what they were saying. There were slow sports that to him was like watching paint dry. There was rarely anything on the movie channels, and the documentaries were always about subjects he knew.

However, his interest was piqued one day whilst watching a channel that was dedicated to running political updates 24/7. The first show he had tuned into on it had a reporter grilling a politician about allegedly accepting large bribes and then using it to dig up dirt on other people of power just to further his career. He liked watching the man squirm as he repeatedly denied the allegations even though the evidence was concrete and the net was constantly tightening with every piece of evidence.

That got him hooked and then when he heard a speech by a representative of the Federal Party. These guys spoke his language they seemed to also want to get things done, and not sit on the side lines. Since then he was always tuning in just to listen, and hopefully hear what these people said next. Which is why he was extremely pissed now. They had talked and preached to his soul and now here came another party pratting on when in reality their policies would result in the collapse of the country.

He quickly turned it off before their filth could infect his ears with their presence he got up wondered around his apartment, but soon disappointed to remember that there was nothing else to do around his apartment. He went to his cupboard and checked to see if his gun was still there. It was.

The country was very strict on gun ownership, something William didn’t mind too much, because if everybody held a gun he knew chaos was sure to erupt. He had obtained his gun through being a registered hunter, specifically duck hunting. He remembered those days well. When he had little work to do he would get out of town, and into the woods for some fun hunting. He was so good at it to that once he manged to hit the legal limit for ducks in less than hour. The club he belonged to, gave him a plague for hitting that record. Now he too old to go out into the woods and hunt, but the hunting club still existed on the edge of town and he went there regularly to keep up his aim.

After making sure his gun was fine he went into the living and instead turned on the radio to the local talk radio station. They had finished a segment and were reminding the listeners to stay tuned as they would be recapping the police press conference surrounding The Apartment Killer.

William sat back in interest. He always assumed that the killer was just some anarchist punk who wanted to destroy everything, and put himself in power. However, he was worried that the police still hadn’t caught him. Even though, despite the scale of the killings that should technically be impossible. He should have made at least one slip up, but hadn’t. William knew though it was only a matter of time now.
