“I don’t expect much, Berke,” she says, searching for her words. “Hell, I don’t even care where you went tonight - I just would have preferred to know if you were gonna be out late so I could’ve gone to bed hours ago.”

“So I forgot to text you? So what?! I wasn’t aware I was dating my mother.” The way he says the word has her reeling. They haven’t shared too many intimate, deep stories, but she knows that Berke is well-aware of the fact that she hates being compared to anyone’s mother and that she’s insecure enough about their age gap as it is.

“Well, I wasn’t aware I was dating a child, so I guess we’re even,” she sneers, barely concealing her tears as she exits the hotel room she and Berke are sharing and makes a beeline for the hotel bar.

She takes a seat at the bar, relaxing a bit when her quick scan of the patrons tells her that nobody else she’d know is there. As she drinks, she replays the last few hours in her mind. “You okay?” Zeki Çelik’s voice brings her out of her thoughts.

“Huh?” She turns to face him, confused.

“You let out a sigh… I assume something is wrong?”

“Oh.” She laughs awkwardly, running a hand through her hair. “I didn’t realize I’d done that.” She gives him a small smile, gesturing to the empty barstool beside her. “You can sit if you want.”

Zeki returns her smile, taking the seat she offers. “Do you want to talk about it?”

The two of them sit in silence for a few long moments before she finally caves. “It was a long time coming, I think. We didn’t break up, obviously, but we definitely said things that were both on our minds.”

“We don’t have to talk about it if you don’t want to,” Zeki says, taking a sip of his club soda when it arrives.

“It’s okay,” you reply, waving off the sentiment with your hand. You’re tipsy now and you want to talk about it. “He compared me to his mother and I called him a child.” You let out a derisive laugh, shaking your head. “It was ridiculous.”

“Why?”

“This is exactly what I worried was going to happen when the two of us started dating but Berke swore our age difference wasn’t a big deal to him…”

She trails off and Zeki finds himself studying her intently. “You’re older?”

Waking up in Zeki’s arms feels like a dream, and she’s almost sure she’s dreaming until he shifts and stretches, giving her a small smile. “Günaydın,” he says, his voice rough with sleep. Good morning. “How did you sleep?”

She doesn’t answer him, instead moving to throw back the covers and find her clothes. “Shit!” She curses, running a hand through her hair. “I’m a mess; I should shower before I get back, right? God, fuck, Berke’s gonna know something’s up.”

“Look at me, Balım,” Zeki says soothingly, getting up from the bed and coming to rest his hands on her shoulders.”It’s gonna be okay - we’ll figure this out.”

“I can’t believe I cheated on him,” she whispers, covering her mouth with her hand as she tries to keep tears at bay. “I...I was mad at him - I never thought I’d do something this awful.”

“I know, I know you didn’t mean it,” he says, pulling her into his arms against his better judgment. The regret in her voice makes him feel hollow, but he doesn’t dare put his own feelings on her in this moment. After all, it isn’t fair for him to have slept with his teammate’s girlfriend, regardless of how he’s felt about her this last week. “Don’t worry. This was just a one-time thing and I promise I won’t tell him unless you decide to.”

“You won’t?” The relief on her face as she looks up at him makes him want to die, but Zeki nods.

“I won’t. Now, let’s figure out what to do. Why don’t you shower here and then we’ll figure out what to do next, okay?”

Zeki watches, heartbroken, as she goes back to Berke like nothing happened. Logically, he knew that the two of them wouldn’t have lasted even if she’d dumped Berke for him, but it still hurts. He knows this is for the best, that lying to Berke was the only way to keep the team together (or, at least, that’s what he’s telling himself), but he can’t help wishing he was the one on her arm instead.

"I see," Jumin took a sip of coffee and tried to focus his eyes on the magazine. Recently, he found himself staring at the girl too often and he trying to fight it. "Besides, everyone is nice to me. And they are funny." "Funny? Yes, I understand why you can see them as funny." "But you rarely log in. Is this my fault?" Jumin raised an eyebrow, refusing to show any emotion, "Why do you think so?" "Because I suspect it must be embarrassing for you. But no one is making fun of our situation since I asked for it." "Believe me, jokes will start as soon as I get back there." Riyu rested her cheek on her hand, with an elbow on the table, with a sigh, "What a pity. Have you even seen my profile?" "I didn't pay attention. Is it important for some reason?" "That's a weird name." "Not at all!" Riyu was outraged and lightly hit him on the shoulder with an open hand. This gesture completely dazed him. "Have you ever watched Wolf's Rain anime?" "I haven't watched any anime. It's a waste of time." "What? You've got to be kidding me! I have to show you a few, then you'll change your mind. Hige is one of the characters from this anime." "Your favorite, I guess. Oh... your avatar." "Ah, yes. I just wanted to show everyone how lucky I'm to hug this beautiful cat." The girl returned to her place and tapped something on the phone. For some reason, he became interested and worried about who she could write with. "Maybe I'll actually start logging in more often," He wondered aloud. "It would be nice to talk to you there sometimes," Riyu smiled charmingly. Jumin looked away, massaged his temple, "Tell me, do you really care to get along or is it just your game?" The girl's face immediately took on a sharper expression. Her sweet smile disappeared, "Listen, someday, you want it or not, we'll be family in some way. So yes, I care about getting along." "Family..." Jumin frowned. "Are you really ready to marry my father?" The girl apparently swallowed, "Yes." "Why? Do you really want to torment yourself for money?" "I don't care about his money. And no, I don't torment myself." "Do you know that you are really bad at pretending and lying?" "So you should see when I tell the truth. So you should see that I really don't care about money." Yes, that was the strangest thing... He was really starting to believe that money wasn't her goal at all. But he had no idea what could it be. "If you don't do it for money, why?" She did not answer him, so he continued, "Just don't say you actually have any feelings for my father. You despise him. You even loathe talking with him." "That's not true," The girl shook her head. "I like to talk to him." "So why has my father recently complained to me that you rarely pick up calls from him?" "I just rarely have my phone with me." "From what I understood, you like to write on the messenger with others. So you must have your phone in your hand quite often." The girl narrowed her eyes, she was angry, "What is this? An interrogation?" He looked up at her and had to not control his cold eyes, because Riyu backed away, shuddered? Then her phone rang. They both looked at the screen. What timing! His father just called. Riyu stiffened. "Won't you answer?" Jumin asked. The girl looked at him furiously, then grabbed the phone, and when he heard this artificially sweet voice, he immediately regretted that he provoked her to pick up. "Good morning, Mr. Han! Ah, I'm just eating breakfast with your son. How are your business matters?" Jumin barely swallowed bites of food and sips of coffee when he heard her babbling to his father. He felt sick, his throat tightened. Their conversation on the phone lasted about fifteen minutes, so quite a long time for them. As if the girl wanted to prove something to him.

When she finally hung up the phone, she didn't look at him. In silence, she returned to eating her leftover breakfast. Jumin felt uncomfortable... He felt... guilty.

"I'm sorry," He sighed. "You don't have to do this anymore. Don't force yourself to talk to him."

"I don't force myself," She answered gruffly.

"Why can't you be honest with me?"

"I'm honest," Another lie. "I want to marry your father. I may seem uncomfortable with him, but it's because we still have to get used to each other. In time, I will feel at ease with him."

Jumin put down his coffee, put the magazine away, and got up from the table. Riyu eyes followed him, "Won't you finish your breakfast?" "I've lost my appetite." Jumin headed for the exit, but before he left he heard a quiet 'Have a nice day at work' behind him.

Her voice was washed of emotion when she answered.  Jumin didn't know what to say, "Is everything... Are you all right?"  "Yes."  She was definitely not all right. And Jumin felt a great need to change it somehow, "You said in the morning that you would like to show me some animes."  "Yes, what about this?"  "I think I would like to see some. Maybe at the evening? I'll try to left from work earlier today."

Jaehee was not happy that he had left work earlier because he had left her extra paperwork, but for some reason he wanted to fulfill the promise he made to Riyu. When he returned to the building and entered the apartment, he felt a strange smell. Did Riyu order dinner for them? But she wasn't in the kitchen and the food wasn't waiting for him on the table.  "Riyu?"  "I'm here," Her voice came from the living room.  So he headed there and before his eyes, an unusual view appeared. Riyu had already prepared several DVDs, probably with those animes that she wanted to show him. A blanket lay on the floor in front of the sofa. A box of pizza next to it - the strange smell coming from it. "I'm ready for our movie night," She said with a smile and sat back comfortably on the blanket, "If you need to refresh yourself after work, I'll give you only a moment. Be brief while the pizza is still warm."  Jumin was completely stunned, "Shouldn't we have dinner first?"  "This is our dinner!"  "Pizza? It's rather unhealthy." Riyu rolled her eyes, "Once in a while you can let yourself eat junk food. Come on, hurry up, or I'll start without you." So he went to refresh himself quickly and allowed himself to take off his jacket and stay in his shirt, he also took off his tie. When he returned to the living room, Riyu was already turning on the movie, "Hurry up, it's starting!"  A little hesitantly he sat down next to her, on a blanket and leaned his back on the sofa behind him, "Why are we sitting on the blanket?"  "It's better this way."  Jumin raised an eyebrow, "Is it? It's not good for your spine."  "Seriously, Jumin?"  "You also forgot to prepare plates and cutlery." "We don't need them for pizza!"  "So how are we supposed to eat?"  "Using our hands?" The girl reached for a piece of pizza into the box, dipped its tip in the sauce, then tilted her head back and directed the piece of pizza to her mouth. She bit off a fragment and began to chew it.  "It doesn't look very elegant," He stated at this view but couldn't help smiling. In fact, it didn't look elegant. It looked cute. The girl handed him a piece of pizza, "Eat, watch and relax. Apparently, you need it more than I do."  "Do you think that I don't take time to relax? That's not true, I think that relaxation is a very important part of life and work. When I need to relax, I go to a grape farm."  "It must be a very pleasant way to relax, but I promise you that the ways of the commoners also have their charm." So for the next hour, they watched anime, ate pizza and sat on a blanket. For Jumin, it was a completely new and unexpectedly pleasant experience. He actually felt relaxed. He stretched one leg forward, the other bent at the knee and put his elbow on it. The girl was sitting cross-legged next to him. They watched intently, sometimes exchanging comments. When they watched a few episodes and took a short break before the next, Jumin felt the need to say something. "I don't understand why this Hige is your favorite character. He is clumsy, irresponsible and only thinks about food and women."  Riyu chuckled and then shrugged, "When I was younger I thought he was cute." "Do you still think so?"  "Hmm. I still appreciate him because when he fell in love, he remained loyal to one woman for the rest of his life."  "If you really want to marry my father, you must be ready that he is not like that. He is not loyal. He has problems remaining faithful." The girl looked away, "You don't have a good opinion about your father." "On the contrary. I value him very much. But I know how he is when it comes to women."  Suddenly, Riyu's phone rang. The girl twitched, suddenly turned pale, but reached for her cell phone.  "You don't have to pick up if-"  "It's Seven. Ha! Let's see what he has to say." Riyu picked up a call in hands-free mode. "Riyu~ You picked up! I'm so happy~!" "What do you want, Seven? I'm busy watching anime and eating pizza."  "Whaaa? Do you value pizza and anime more than me?"  "It depends how sorry you are for your jokes."  "I'm terribly sorry, I am begging you on my knees for forgiveness!"  "I think you should also apologize to Jumin. That matter concerns him as much as me."  "I will certainly apologize to him!"  "You can do it now. He's here with me and you're on a speaker." Jumin barely suppressed a laugh. This girl... "Do you think we can accept such an apology?"  "I think so, exceptionally."  "You're in luck today, Seven. Bye ~!" "I think he got his lesson, but since it's Seven, I doubt he'll ever stop fooling around," Jumin concluded.  Riyu sighed, "I know."  Suddenly something white flashed past them. The girl looked at the pizza box, "Oh no!" Then she jumped to her feet and ran somewhere, "Elizabeth, you can't eat that!"  Jumin got up quickly and hurried after the girl, "Did she steal a piece of pizza?"  Riyu just squatted and picked up a piece of pizza from the floor. She breathed a sigh of relief, "She must have dropped it along the way."  "She hid under the furniture. Your scream must have scared her."  "Most importantly, she didn't eat that." Suddenly Elizabeth ran out from under the furniture and fell straight into Riyu's legs. The girl stepped back so as not to stop on the cat, as a result of which she tripped over its small figure or maybe over her own legs.  Jumin reacted faster than he could think about it. He reached out one arm and the girl fell on it with her back. His fingers reflexively pressed around her waist. Riyu looked up at his face, slightly dazed. Her skin was soft, her eyes deep, her lips slightly parted. Jumin felt he was getting hot, and a strange thought flashed through his head... but he quickly chased it away.  He helped the girl stand straight on the floor and took his hand away. "Um... Thank you," She said, apparently embarrassed. He wasn't looking at her, "No problem. It wouldn't be good if you'd break your arm or something like that." "Yes, your father would not be pleased." "I wouldn't be pleased either." The girl was silent for a moment, then snorted softly, "Is this your way of saying that you care about me?" "I never said I don't care about you," He slowly turned to face her again and it was a big mistake. Now he could see that she was blushing and it make his heart race once more. "Will we go back to watching..?" Riyu suggested shyly.  Jumin nodded stiffly. He didn't even think about checking if Elizabeth the 3rd had been hurt. They just came back in front of the TV, sat down on the blanket and Riyu turned on another episode. At first it was awkward between them, but eventually, they both relaxed again. They watched anime till late at night. The ending was surprisingly brutal and sad.  Jumin noticed Riyu's lips tightening and her eyes sparkling. Was she stopping herself from crying?  "Are you all right?" He asked.  She sniffed loudly and rubbed her eyes, "Yes, yes. I just feel sad..."  Jumin raised his eyebrows, "Because of the movie?"  She nodded.  Cute. Incredibly cute.  "You shouldn't worry about it. It didn't really happen."  "I know, I know... But it's stronger than me." Jumin looked at his watch and only then realized how late it really was, "Ah, I should go to sleep now."  "I hope you won't be late for work tomorrow because of our movie night."  "Today, actually. It's past midnight. But don't worry about it. That was a surprisingly nice experience. I think I would like to repeat that sometime."  "All right, but next time you choose a movie."  Jumin nodded and rose from the blanket. The girl followed in his footsteps and started cleaning up, but he stopped her immediately, "Leave it. The Maid will take care of it."  "Ah, yes," She replied and straightened up. silent:

wings: really well done visually, also features the first gay kiss in history (ofc the context is different, but it’s there!)

nosferatu: the legendary spongebob character’s origin story! the music is wonderful in this, it’s very Artsy, just one of the greatest horror movies ever (it’s a bit slow at times but most silent films are)

the cabinet of dr caligari: REALLY cool from an art perspective, the sets are incredible, i love german expressionism, another great one for when you’re in the mood to get Spooky

steamboat bill, jr: buster keaton is a legend for a reason, this is my personal favorite of his. theres also something very unique and charming about silent film slapstick that i just adore, and this is a wonderful showcase of it!

the gold rush: basically the same reasoning as above, but with charlie chaplin. also this movie has a lot of genuine emotion you dont often get from silent comedies!

sunrise: a song of two humans: a must-see for silent films, it has super intriguing visual effects that really give a dreamlike quality to it, as well as great acting for the limited medium

show people: a really sweet classic romance that also gives you a nice (if not totally accurate) taste of The Movie Biz @ the time

metropolis: one of the first sci fi movies ever. visually STUNNING like nothing ive ever seen, also a bit of a workers of the world unite moment

noir/drama/general Serious Stuff: 

the big sleep: SEXY! the plot is hard to follow but it’s worth it for the characters and also just all i can say is. hot - it’s about a murder or two!

the maltese falcon: actually makes sense and like. Says Stuff abt humanity. gripping plot and nuanced characters -about a bird statue and the knights templar also human nature but also who could forget a murder or two!

sunset boulevard: absolutely enthralling characters, script, plot, performances, all of it! - it’s about a murder!

rebel without a cause: HUGE gay subtext with this one, one of the original Teen Movies

kiss me deadly: interesting!!!!! i was intrigued from start to finish w this one and you probably will be too

strangers on a train: one o those Psychological Thrillers, interesting n well acted - it’s about The Concept of Murder

north by northwest: super fast paced spy action movie that also #makes you think

murder, my sweet: another classic phillip marlowe story with that fast talkin detective dialogue i love so much - it’s about a murder! (my sweet)

double indemnity: the height of Cynicism in noir, not even any detectives in this just bad deeds and Tension -it’s about a murder or two!

key largo: just a hotel full of intriguing characters all At Odds with each other and the concept of heroism

random harvest: kinda cheesy amnesia plot but comes across well with good acting and dialogue

the lady vanishes: about a lady. who vanishes. funny at times and has that Classic hitchcock tension before he really landed on his final style

casablanca: “here’s lookin at you kid” “i think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship” just. one of the most iconic movies of the whole Classic Era and for good reason!

to have and have not: basically casablanca BUT consider this- i love Them (them being humphrey bogart and lauren bacall)

comedy/romance/general Light Stuff:

the thin man series: one of my absolute all time favorites! it’s just a story about two rich people who only love each other and alcohol getting dragged into solving various mysteries. my favorite thing about this is how much you can tell they love each other, like they’ve been married for years and just banter back and forth in a way founded on mutual respect n adoration which is So refreshing to see in classic movies!

it happened one night: i ADORE this movie! it’s a classic road trip comedy with a ton of bizarre side characters and hijinks, and also basically Invented the rom com genre. they’re also genuinely in love in a very cute way! it’s just sweet and fun and one of my fav movies of all time

arsenic and old lace: a dark comedy about old lady serial killers, brothers who think theyre theodore roosevelt and frankenstein (respectively), and Love. it’s super bizarre but a real joy to watch!

it’s a wonderful life: makes me sob every single time and leaves ya with that fuzzy warm feeling inside (recommended for christmas/winter viewing)

duck soup: i mean it’s the most iconic marx brothers movie, what more can i say!

bringing up baby: just a real wacky romp where it’s the lady and the tiger, with a whole lot of silly comedy

my man godfrey: makes fun of rich people n has a big loud ensemble cast (also romance)

the shop around the corner: they fall in love through letters but hate each other in real life! :0! bonus points for jimmy stewart’s voice

abbott and costello meet frankenstein: the title says it all. completely joyfully stupid movies like these are a big reason why i love old movies!

roman holiday: audrey hepburn’s debut movie. really sweet, has an ending that makes me cry

death takes a holiday: super interesting experimental concept not seen often in this era - Death literally takes a holiday and has to deal w life n love n all that

sabrina: a very nice and well acted little romance/cinderalla story w sprinkle of comedy

the philadelphia story: another Classique rom com with a love triangle n some nice fast-paced witty dialogue

musicals:

singin in the rain: one of the first classic movies i ever remember loving. every second of it is just. ah chef kiss

guys and dolls: very fun!!! just emblematic of good ol showtunesy musicals as a whole 

top hat: fred astaire and ginger rogers!! need i say more?

on the town: really fun music n choreography, generally engaging to watch

cabin in the sky: an all black cast with a ton of great songs n talent! 

the great ziegfeld: a really lovely period piece about 20s live shows with stunning costumes/choreography

gentlemen prefer blondes: it’s classic baby!

meet me in st louis: very sweet very fun lots to love

an american in paris: kinda ran out of juice near the end here and realized Musicals is the Same. anyways watch it gene kelly is charming and can click his heels together

dracula: sexy. iconic. what more do you need

frankenstein: really has a Heart unlike a lot of these, also Iconic

bride of frankenstein: made me cry! see above but like, More

just realized im listing all the universal monster movies, so just, watch Any of those for a good and cheesy classic horror time

the day the earth stood still: a real cold war era movie about aliens and morality

plan 9 from outer space: a HILARIOUS so-bad-it’s-good old sci fi movie, highly recommend 

them!: giant radiation ants babey! really good effects for the time n well done suspense

honorable mention: this is past the cut off date but watch santa claus conquers the martians oh my gosh it’s the epitome of old b list sci fi and it never fails to send me n pals into a regular Laugh Riot

As of 8/14/20 Charlie is no longer open to romantic ships with female muses specifically, and will ship only with Bunny’s female muses: Irene @gcrefxed and Sarah @killerxquccn  , with her characters being detrimental in Charlie's story and to his character. Sarah specifically has always been the love of Charlie's life with the likelihood of anyone (beyond Irene) able to come close slim to none. This in no way means I will not interact with female muses or am being exclusionary  from this point; I always want to explore the multitude of subtleties in dynamics between Charlie and muses of every gender - even female muses having feelings for charlie, flirting with him etc - but dynamics with those female leaning will not result in anything romantic. Male muses, however,  are still open to the possibility of such a dynamic as that aspect to Charlies sexuality and character hasnt been delved into and I would find really interesting to explore. Bitcoin (BTC) To $50,000 – Hayes, Bernstein And Tampax Validation

Arthur Hayes says bitcoin will go to $50,000.

That’s actually a fairly conservative target, as Hayes himself suggests, if he takes to the logical conclusion the arguments he employs to justify his bullish pronouncement.

At the root of BitMEX chief executive Hayes’s thinking is a much-noted investment super theme, found to be in use by many a mutual fund manager: demographics

For instance, from China to India, where the middle class is on the rise, a common investment theme – the growing middle class in emerging markets – sees savvy investors focus on companies producing those products and services that a growing middle class could be expected to make increasing use of, from eating more red meat to spending more on education or using brokerage services, to name just three.

When it comes to the future of crypto, the adoption story is similarly rooted in a demographic imperative, and Hayes is by no means the first to take notice. The millennials are coming!

Incidentally, China and India are the places where Hayes expects crypto digital money to take hold first.

Not enough of the right sort of money – Gresham’s Law, MMT and Bitcoin (BTC)

In an interview with Venture Coinist Hayes lays out the now familiar assumptions of many in the crypto world, which it might be said is basically a reworking of the Gresham’s Law maxim that bad money drives out good.

There are lots of issues that arise from Gresham’s law’s application to crypto vis a vis fiat money, chief among them being that the money Gresham had in mind was the commodity form, where the one with the lower metallic value but same nominal face value of another, would drive the latter out of circulation and into hoardes.

Of course, fiat isn’t commodity money and some would say crypto isn’t either, so the theory should break down. But, for crypto believers it does not.

In such a view, the circulating paper money issued at the whim (fiat) of governments has no intrinsic value. In truth though it does if we think more imaginatively. Ultimately paper money (and coins containing less metallic value than their face value) is backed by the tax base and assets (land, state-owned industries and services) of the nation state that issues it.

So what happens when the government starts issuing money willy-nilly, out of all proportion to the commerce it is required to set in motion and the ability of its tax base to sustain?

A debate is raging in economics (and politics) about so-called Modern Monetary Theory (MMT) which has is that a government with a monopoly over its currency – which in the US case means a monopoly over the world’s reserve currency – does not need to overly worry about money issuance, except to make sure there’s enough of it for the economy’s needs and not too much (reduced by fiscal measures such as increasing taxes) that it stunts growth and creates unemployment.

The implications of this theory for crypto haven’t been fully explored and its post-Keynesian roots seem to borrow from those who see monetary policy as the crucial economic lever. But MMT or not, the perceived weaknesses or otherwise of the financial system is crypto’s l’overture – for crypto people there is not enough money of the right type.

It’s obviously where bitcoin comes in. But before it does, the breakdown of the existing money system begins or, more correctly, continues and deepens.

Central bank policy of inflating the money supply to protect and arguably inflate the value of assets continues apace, despite fears last year of a sharp turn in policy.

This is most clearly seen in the policy U-turn of the US Federal Reserve. Weaning off the morphine had begun but as weak global growth pressed in on policymakers’ room for manoeuvre in the US and elsewhere, the tap of cheap money was left running.

This is what Hayes derides as the “silliness” of central bank policy.

He believes it will keep the equities party going a little longer, which he sees as evident in tech companies such as Lyft and Uber grabbing their last chance to go public and the VCs of getting their fat exits. That will stall the price appreciation of bitcoin but not for long he claims.

Returning to Gresham’s law, if the good money is withdrawn from circulation what does that mean for bitcoin as digital cash?

Well it implies it is set to increasingly become a store of value that is not used very much in the realm of circulation. That’s not necessarily a bad thing as it leaves intact its putative role as the digital gold of the 21st century.

And for those that doubt that, it is the proof-of-work consensus that makes bitcoin akin to a commodity form of money, with its value derived from the computing power devoted to is network.

In this scenario, a crypto(s) other than bitcoin can still circulate as an everyday means of payment, state-issued and private.

Millennials are at the heart of the digital money investment theme

This bring us to the second part of Hayes’s musings that’s worthy of dwelling on: demographics, which, for our purposes, can be boiled down to its constituent parts as a mixture of behavioural and thematic investing.

Hayes hitches bitcoin’s prospects to the future, the millennials – those reaching adulthood at the beginning of the the 21st century.

Certainly, the baby-boomers who drove the post-war economic boom still find it difficult to get their head round money made from code, but for the millennials used to music and films that ultimately are stored and downloaded as code, nothing could be more obvious.

Besides, as Hayes points out, the baby boomers are running down their assets, or handing them down, while the millennials are just starting to build there’s up.

Here’s Hayes take on the digital natives:

“Now that we’ve come to this time period where the baby booming generation and the older Gen Xers are entering the years when they are disposing of assets, their tastes and preferences are less relevant than the younger generation, Millennials, who are entering their prime asset earning years. And so what do we know about Millennials?”

Hayes tell us what we know: “Some of them, on the younger end of the spectrum, are digital natives, mobile first. They’ve had a screen in their hand since they were a young child. They’re very comfortable using a service which has very little human interaction.”

And it might be added at this juncture that millennials are also presumably happy (or ignorant of) with the enormous computing power that goes into making artificial intelligence possible, and will continue to do so at an exponential rate.

Hayes continues: “So, if you take this sort of change in how we deal with services, and we bring it to the financial services ecosystem, you can see that analogue ways of dealing with money and trading are not going to be successful in the next 10 to 20 years. It’s going to be mobile-first platforms. It’s going to be platforms that deal only on the internet.”

And with cash being squeezed out of the system or otherwise falling into abeyance, with digital payments taking its place, cryptographically secured digital cash comes into play.

Hayes again: “And that’s where I see the value proposition of Bitcoin finally clicking in everyone’s head, when they realize, ‘Oh shit. I used to be able to take out a $10 bill and go buy a dime bag of weed. But I can’t do that anymore. There’s no more cash. I have to use this app’…”

By the way, we return to marijuana a little later, but so as not to be distracted let’s take note here that Hayes is outlining what may probably turn out to be one of the greatest investment opportunities of the millennium.

Follow Bernstein – Make Bitcoin (BTC) part of your survival plan

Which brings us to investment legend Peter L Bernstein, the author of the seminal work on finance and risk Capital Ideas: The Improbable Origins of Modern Wall Street.

The book, published in 1991, is currently the subject of a series by John Authers, formerly of the Financial Times and now with Bloomberg and tells the story of how the ideas of the academe infiltrated and came to dominate on Wall Street.

Bernstein explains how the advent of tax-free pension investments began to transform the investment landscape in the US in the 50s and 60s and how by the early 70s risk management was rising up the agenda. These changes meant new techniques and strategies for managing wealth came to the fore, from the Black Scholes Model to efficient market hypothesis, the latter of which Bernstein was a key populariser and refiner.

For Bernstein the key was not to lose money, to stay safe, mitigate risk. Despite the advances Bernstein outlines, off-the-charts risk-taking has in fact been fuelled by the policies of central bankers spurred on, perversely, by worries about the risks facing the financial system.

Crypto critics such as economist Nouriel Roubini will be quick to jump in here to remind the reader that bitcoin is indicative of the extreme extent to which that risk-taking has gone, but this won’t concern us here, as this article can be read as a rebuttal of Dr Doom’s underlying thesis concerning bitcoin’s supposed irrelevance.

In an interview conducted before Lehman Brothers disappeared from the face of the Earth in September 2008 at the height of the financial crisis, Bernstein commented: “Understanding that we do not know the future is such a simple statement, but it’s so important… survival is the only road to riches”.

He went on: “You should try to maximise return only if losses would threaten your survival and if you have a compelling future need for the extra gains you might earn.”

That sounds like an argument for keeping well away from bitcoin but bear with me because what it does, by inference, reveal underneath the portfolio management advice the fragility of the current financial system.

In a second interview, also before the collapse of Lehman Brothers but after having seen enough to be able to pass judgement on a future that had not fully come into view, Bernstein’s observations are more explicit in regard to the general health of the system.

“It took a very long time to get the memory of the Depression out of business decisions. I think this is going to be the same. The Fed, too, is going to be less decisive and is going to feel that what it should do is less clear.

“One of the things that gave people a sense that they could afford to take risks  was the sense that the central bankers more or less know what they are doing. But I don’t think we are going to feel that way going forward…”

The world into which bitcoin was born – from Gillette and Tampax to crypto

We quote Bernstein at length because he puts into a nutshell where the economy is at today with stunning prescience. There will be no more V-shaped recovery. L-shaped is more likely or a flat U, says Bernstein.

This is the world into which bitcoin was borne. Indeed, it is why it was born. It is not just an economic reaction but a profound social one.

Paradoxically however, the world in which risks are successfully, for now, mitigated by central bankers may be coming to an end if a global recession appears on the horizon in a year or so. Then we might find those masters of the universe at the Fed and elsewhere have empty medicine bags and nothing to treat the patient.

Authers returns to Capital Ideas for some advice on what a worried investor should do.

There was a time, in the early 1960s, when two brands were bringing in cash but were nevertheless out-of-favour with investors. They were Gillette and Tampax, companies long since consumed by the Proctor & Gamble.

If you had been a contrarian investor who eschewed following the crowd, you would have done well in the 1960s by investing in those two companies.

That’s what Bernstein-Macaulay did for its clients when Peter Bernstein was working for the family firm in 1961.

These undervalued companies were shunned for two reasons. One, they didn’t pay a dividend and two, being consumer staples they were just not very sexy. In the case of Tampax the stock was just downright embarrassing to talk about because of the ridiculous taboo that was/is menstruation.

Investment managers didn’t want to have a conversation with clients about tampons. And razors, although not the arena of taboos, was not exactly sexy either, added to which no one in 1961 thought buying the disposal variant would catch on in the way that it did.

Bernstein explained his demographic theme investing strategy thus: “We called it ‘investing in the puberty boom’. We bought heavy positions in Gillette and Tampax (then a highly controversial stock to own, and awkward even to suggest to a client of either sex).”

Incidentally, as Authers reminds us, things have improved in terms of talking about menstruation (there are ads that actually mention the subject at hand) but not as much as we might like to think (it’s the patriarchy).

However, the important point was that the prevalence of such attitudes and the coincident rise of the baby boomers meant that Tampax (and Gillette, because the baby boomers took to disposable razors in their millions) was undervalued.

“If you can find something that makes people today as squeamish as Tampax apparently did in 1961 (I hate to suggest it, but maybe marijuana?) that could be a good idea,” Authers advises.

Ok, so crypto doesn’t make the mainstream squeamish and for Authers probably has other features that keep if off his buy list. But actually, its mere mention is likely to be heart attack-inducing, as opposed to merely bring on nausea, because of its supposed valuelessness and proven ability to attract speculators and charlatans.

Notwithstanding any of that though, if bitcoin is in some way part of the answer as far digital money goes – although perhaps not most of the 2,000 other crypto, then we should definitely place it among Authers’s bracketed undervalued plays alongside marijuana.

Having said that, bitcoin’s  economic and social impact may be much greater than that of the weed whose family name Authers is somewhat shame-faced to mention. 

If we are not at the bottom of the crypto bear market it looks like we are pretty near. That could make today a good time to start investing in bitcoin.

But timing the market is not a great look as it is extremely difficult to do successfully.

A far better approach, one with which Bernstein would no doubt have agreed (he died on 2009), is to do the bottom-up research to find undervalued stocks, or an instrument in another asset class and then drip-feed into the market. But to be fair he would probably have put crypto in the way too risky bag although may not have been quite as quick to dismiss it out of hand.

As for BitMEX’s Hayes, he says bitcoin at $10,000 is easily achievable before year’s end, and sees it even higher over the next few years.

“In terms of a price target, I don’t know, say $50,000 in the next two to five years. But it could go materially higher if the world plays out the way I think it’s going to play out.”

The implications of this theory for crypto haven’t been fully explored and its post-Keynesian roots seem to borrow from those who see monetary policy as the crucial economic lever. But MMT or not, the perceived weaknesses or otherwise of the financial system is crypto’s l’overture – for crypto people there is not enough money of the right type.

It’s obviously where bitcoin comes in. But before it does, the breakdown of the existing money system begins or, more correctly, continues and deepens.

Central bank policy of inflating the money supply to protect and arguably inflate the value of assets continues apace, despite fears last year of a sharp turn in policy.

This is most clearly seen in the policy U-turn of the US Federal Reserve. Weaning off the morphine had begun but as weak global growth pressed in on policymakers’ room for manoeuvre in the US and elsewhere, the tap of cheap money was left running.

This is what Hayes derides as the “silliness” of central bank policy.

He believes it will keep the equities party going a little longer, which he sees as evident in tech companies such as Lyft and Uber grabbing their last chance to go public and the VCs of getting their fat exits. That will stall the price appreciation of bitcoin but not for long he claims.

Returning to Gresham’s law, if the good money is withdrawn from circulation what does that mean for bitcoin as digital cash?

Well it implies it is set to increasingly become a store of value that is not used very much in the realm of circulation. That’s not necessarily a bad thing as it leaves intact its putative role as the digital gold of the 21st century.

And for those that doubt that, it is the proof-of-work consensus that makes bitcoin akin to a commodity form of money, with its value derived from the computing power devoted to is network.

In this scenario, a crypto(s) other than bitcoin can still circulate as an everyday means of payment, state-issued and private.

Millennials are at the heart of the digital money investment theme

This bring us to the second part of Hayes’s musings that’s worthy of dwelling on: demographics, which, for our purposes, can be boiled down to its constituent parts as a mixture of behavioural and thematic investing.

Hayes hitches bitcoin’s prospects to the future, the millennials – those reaching adulthood at the beginning of the the 21st century.

Certainly, the baby-boomers who drove the post-war economic boom still find it difficult to get their head round money made from code, but for the millennials used to music and films that ultimately are stored and downloaded as code, nothing could be more obvious.

Besides, as Hayes points out, the baby boomers are running down their assets, or handing them down, while the millennials are just starting to build there’s up.

Here’s Hayes take on the digital natives:

“Now that we’ve come to this time period where the baby booming generation and the older Gen Xers are entering the years when they are disposing of assets, their tastes and preferences are less relevant than the younger generation, Millennials, who are entering their prime asset earning years. And so what do we know about Millennials?”

Hayes tell us what we know: “Some of them, on the younger end of the spectrum, are digital natives, mobile first. They’ve had a screen in their hand since they were a young child. They’re very comfortable using a service which has very little human interaction.”

And it might be added at this juncture that millennials are also presumably happy (or ignorant of) with the enormous computing power that goes into making artificial intelligence possible, and will continue to do so at an exponential rate.

Hayes continues: “So, if you take this sort of change in how we deal with services, and we bring it to the financial services ecosystem, you can see that analogue ways of dealing with money and trading are not going to be successful in the next 10 to 20 years. It’s going to be mobile-first platforms. It’s going to be platforms that deal only on the internet.”

And with cash being squeezed out of the system or otherwise falling into abeyance, with digital payments taking its place, cryptographically secured digital cash comes into play.

Hayes again: “And that’s where I see the value proposition of Bitcoin finally clicking in everyone’s head, when they realize, ‘Oh shit. I used to be able to take out a $10 bill and go buy a dime bag of weed. But I can’t do that anymore. There’s no more cash. I have to use this app’…”

By the way, we return to marijuana a little later, but so as not to be distracted let’s take note here that Hayes is outlining what may probably turn out to be one of the greatest investment opportunities of the millennium.

Follow Bernstein – Make Bitcoin (BTC) part of your survival plan

Which brings us to investment legend Peter L Bernstein, the author of the seminal work on finance and risk Capital Ideas: The Improbable Origins of Modern Wall Street.

The book, published in 1991, is currently the subject of a series by John Authers, formerly of the Financial Times and now with Bloomberg and tells the story of how the ideas of the academe infiltrated and came to dominate on Wall Street.

Bernstein explains how the advent of tax-free pension investments began to transform the investment landscape in the US in the 50s and 60s and how by the early 70s risk management was rising up the agenda. These changes meant new techniques and strategies for managing wealth came to the fore, from the Black Scholes Model to efficient market hypothesis, the latter of which Bernstein was a key populariser and refiner.

For Bernstein the key was not to lose money, to stay safe, mitigate risk. Despite the advances Bernstein outlines, off-the-charts risk-taking has in fact been fuelled by the policies of central bankers spurred on, perversely, by worries about the risks facing the financial system.

Crypto critics such as economist Nouriel Roubini will be quick to jump in here to remind the reader that bitcoin is indicative of the extreme extent to which that risk-taking has gone, but this won’t concern us here, as this article can be read as a rebuttal of Dr Doom’s underlying thesis concerning bitcoin’s supposed irrelevance.

In an interview conducted before Lehman Brothers disappeared from the face of the Earth in September 2008 at the height of the financial crisis, Bernstein commented: “Understanding that we do not know the future is such a simple statement, but it’s so important… survival is the only road to riches”.

He went on: “You should try to maximise return only if losses would threaten your survival and if you have a compelling future need for the extra gains you might earn.”

That sounds like an argument for keeping well away from bitcoin but bear with me because what it does, by inference, reveal underneath the portfolio management advice the fragility of the current financial system.

In a second interview, also before the collapse of Lehman Brothers but after having seen enough to be able to pass judgement on a future that had not fully come into view, Bernstein’s observations are more explicit in regard to the general health of the system.

“It took a very long time to get the memory of the Depression out of business decisions. I think this is going to be the same. The Fed, too, is going to be less decisive and is going to feel that what it should do is less clear.

“One of the things that gave people a sense that they could afford to take risks  was the sense that the central bankers more or less know what they are doing. But I don’t think we are going to feel that way going forward…”

The world into which bitcoin was born – from Gillette and Tampax to crypto

We quote Bernstein at length because he puts into a nutshell where the economy is at today with stunning prescience. There will be no more V-shaped recovery. L-shaped is more likely or a flat U, says Bernstein.

This is the world into which bitcoin was borne. Indeed, it is why it was born. It is not just an economic reaction but a profound social one.

Paradoxically however, the world in which risks are successfully, for now, mitigated by central bankers may be coming to an end if a global recession appears on the horizon in a year or so. Then we might find those masters of the universe at the Fed and elsewhere have empty medicine bags and nothing to treat the patient.

Authers returns to Capital Ideas for some advice on what a worried investor should do.

There was a time, in the early 1960s, when two brands were bringing in cash but were nevertheless out-of-favour with investors. They were Gillette and Tampax, companies long since consumed by the Proctor & Gamble.

If you had been a contrarian investor who eschewed following the crowd, you would have done well in the 1960s by investing in those two companies.

That’s what Bernstein-Macaulay did for its clients when Peter Bernstein was working for the family firm in 1961.

These undervalued companies were shunned for two reasons. One, they didn’t pay a dividend and two, being consumer staples they were just not very sexy. In the case of Tampax the stock was just downright embarrassing to talk about because of the ridiculous taboo that was/is menstruation.

Investment managers didn’t want to have a conversation with clients about tampons. And razors, although not the arena of taboos, was not exactly sexy either, added to which no one in 1961 thought buying the disposal variant would catch on in the way that it did.

Bernstein explained his demographic theme investing strategy thus: “We called it ‘investing in the puberty boom’. We bought heavy positions in Gillette and Tampax (then a highly controversial stock to own, and awkward even to suggest to a client of either sex).”

Incidentally, as Authers reminds us, things have improved in terms of talking about menstruation (there are ads that actually mention the subject at hand) but not as much as we might like to think (it’s the patriarchy).

However, the important point was that the prevalence of such attitudes and the coincident rise of the baby boomers meant that Tampax (and Gillette, because the baby boomers took to disposable razors in their millions) was undervalued.

“If you can find something that makes people today as squeamish as Tampax apparently did in 1961 (I hate to suggest it, but maybe marijuana?) that could be a good idea,” Authers advises.

Ok, so crypto doesn’t make the mainstream squeamish and for Authers probably has other features that keep if off his buy list. But actually, its mere mention is likely to be heart attack-inducing, as opposed to merely bring on nausea, because of its supposed valuelessness and proven ability to attract speculators and charlatans.

Notwithstanding any of that though, if bitcoin is in some way part of the answer as far digital money goes – although perhaps not most of the 2,000 other crypto, then we should definitely place it among Authers’s bracketed undervalued plays alongside marijuana.

Having said that, bitcoin’s  economic and social impact may be much greater than that of the weed whose family name Authers is somewhat shame-faced to mention. 

If we are not at the bottom of the crypto bear market it looks like we are pretty near. That could make today a good time to start investing in bitcoin.

But timing the market is not a great look as it is extremely difficult to do successfully.

A far better approach, one with which Bernstein would no doubt have agreed (he died on 2009), is to do the bottom-up research to find undervalued stocks, or an instrument in another asset class and then drip-feed into the market. But to be fair he would probably have put crypto in the way too risky bag although may not have been quite as quick to dismiss it out of hand.

As for BitMEX’s Hayes, he says bitcoin at $10,000 is easily achievable before year’s end, and sees it even higher over the next few years.

“In terms of a price target, I don’t know, say $50,000 in the next two to five years. But it could go materially higher if the world plays out the way I think it’s going to play out.”
