EZ laughed at Angel’s comment as they both looked at Camila walking through the front door of the carniceria. Felipe came out from the back and joined his sons as they grabbed the bags from her hands and placed them down onto the counter. Angel started filing through the bag’s contents, picking up a nectarine and biting into it, chewing loudly as he continued looking through everything in the bags. Felipe shook his head at his oldest son, smiling then at his youngest as he and Camila locked eyes. He could see the look they shared, that look of young love with still a hint of shyness, EZ pulling her into a hug. He pressed a kiss into her nose, his lips lingering for a moment before he pulled away, Angel now being the one to pull her in softly, landing a brotherly pat to the top of her head before purposefully messing up her hair a bit. She chuckled and pushed his hand away, raking her fingers through her hair to put it back in place before she looked at Felipe, leaning over to give him a hug and a kiss.

“It’s been pretty sunny lately, not many clouds, so everything grew like weeds these last couple of weeks. I also bought a new fertilizer so that’s helping too. I brought more than usual because it was overflowing in the garden and I can’t use all of this myself. Not before things start going bad at least.”

She pushed the bag on the right towards Felipe and then turned towards Angel and EZ, motioning to the second bag.

“I brought more because I figured maybe you could give some to your brothers. I’ve got tomatoes, peaches, peppers, limes. Maybe some of the guys could take them home? You could keep the limes at the clubhouse at the bar, use them for when you do shots?”

Angel smiled as he looked at Camila, her rambling starting up as it always did whenever she was unsure. Patting the bag, Angel nodded and gave Camila a warm smile.

“They’ll love it. Especially Tranq and Taza. They love fresh produce. And we can always use the limes at the clubhouse.”

Camila nodded then, relief clear in her smile.

“Well, that’s good.”

Both Mayans smiled as well, pleased with how easily she had accepted that part of them, the part many didn’t understand and would shy away from because of it. Sure, if she knew the truth about what they really did, if she knew about the tunnels and the murder, the trafficking and the cartel, she may not extend herself as readily, a conversation EZ and Angel had together this morning over a cup of coffee. There was a bit of silence that fell over the group then and Camila stood unsure of herself, hands folded in front of her as she chewed her lip, blurting out her question before she lost the nerve.

“Would you guys like to come over for dinner? I thought maybe I could cook and have you over.”

She never wanted to seem pushy, or like she was forcing herself on them because she and EZ were together. The question had been floating around her mind even before she and EZ had decided to make things official between them, simply wanting to repay the family with the kindness that they had shown her. Them finally being a couple only made it a little easier to ask.

Angel, of course, nodded rather quickly, eager to try some of her cooking while Felipe gave a soft smile first, followed by one single nod.

“That would be nice, Camila.”

The brunette beamed and looked up at EZ, eyes twinkling as she took his hand in hers, her other hand wrapped around his wrist and holding his arm.

“Tonight? Would that be ok?”

All three men nodded, and Camila nodded along with them.

“Tonight, it is.”

Angel finished off the nectarine and then tossed the pit into the trashcan over in the corner before turning back around and picking up the bag of produce, eyebrows raised as he passed Camila and headed towards the door.

“That shit was good. Let’s go drop these off.”

The three of them arrived at the clubhouse together, Camila parking to the side as EZ and Angel backed their bikes up. Camila got out and opened her trunk while the boys removed their helmets and made their way over to her. She reached down to grab the bag but EZ gently pushed her to the side, grabbing the bulky bag himself and giving her a smile.

“I got it, Cam.”

Camila closed the trunk behind him and locked her car, walking up towards the clubhouse with the duo. Angel walked in first, holding the door open for them and they stepped inside. Tranq and Taza sat at the bar with Coco, Bishop nowhere in sight. The men looked up as they walked in and smiled warmly, Coco watching Camila and EZ intently. Camila returned their smile and nervously tucked some of her hair behind her right ear, walking up with the brothers to the bar where the seasoned members sat. Angel could see she was nervous, still not all that familiar with the men as she was with him and Coco, so he spoke up for her as he placed the bag down.

“She brought some stuff from her garden for us. All fresh.”

Both Taza and Tranq stood then, looking down into the bag and pulling items out, placing them down onto the bar. Taza looked back at Camila with a light smile.

“You grew all this?”

Camila nodded, feeling proud of her hard work.

“Yes, sir.”

The older Mayan chuckled and shook his head at her, his smile widening.

“No need for formalities, nena.”

She laughed along with him, Tranq now looking back at her with a genuine fatherly smile.

“These are beautiful. Bishop will love the peppers.”

The two continued emptying the bag as Coco stood and walked over to them, leaning over to press a kiss to Camila’s cheek before coming to stand beside EZ, pushing his elbow into his roughly as he brought his cigarette up to his lips and took a drag. He spoke quietly with a smirk, so only EZ could hear.

“So, you finally got some balls and asked her to be your girl huh, boy scout?”

EZ looked down to hide his smile and then looked back up, nodding and gripping the side of his kutte.

“Yeah. I did.”

Coco nodded then, placing his hand on the back of EZ’s head and pushing it forward playfully. Camila looked back at them and smiled, loving to see all of them interacting, happy and full of love. EZ and Coco continued to laugh amongst themselves, EZ looking forward and catching Camila watching them with a grin. He returned it and she turned back towards the bar, answering Taza’s questions about how she kept the bugs from eating the cilantro leaves.

Hearing the conversations, Bishop walked out of El Templo and up to the bar, returning Camila’s shy wave as she saw him.

“Hola, querida.”

“Hola.”

He looked down at the assortment of produce scattered across the bar top with an arched brow, Tranq turning towards him and handing him two shiny bell peppers, one yellow and one red.

“The kid brought these from her garden.”

Bishop took the peppers from Tranq, squeezing them gently and feeling the tight skin and how firm the vegetable was.

“This is all yours?”

Camilla nodded then quickly followed up.

“Yeah. Well I mean I grew it all, but I brought it for you guys. I don’t need that much for just me. I just wanted to share it.”

Bishop nodded and reached over to place a friendly hand on her shoulder, squeezing softly.

“Thank you, Camila. Are you sticking around?”

She pouted and gave her head a shake, motioning toward EZ who came up and wrapped his left arm around her waist, hand resting on her hip.

“Not today. Next time. I gotta get home, I’m making dinner for these two and their dad tonight.”

Bishop nodded, looking at them as Angel came up as well, tossing his arms lazily over both Camila and EZ’s shoulders, teeth full-on display with his grin, eyes wide and excited.

“She’s making chiles rellenos.”

“Didn’t you almost burn the house down once making those?”

“Man, shut up.”

The crew laughed as Coco poked fun, Angel shaking his head and starting to maneuver Camila and EZ out of the clubhouse. He called out over his shoulder as they exited.

“And it was Chilaquiles that I fucked up.”

“Smells fucking good in here, Cam.”

She smiled as she heard Angel’s voice, him walking into her kitchen with a beer in hand and coming to stand beside her at the stove.

“The rice is almost done. We’ll be eating in less than 10 minutes.”

He looked over her shoulder as she turned the white rice over in its pot, the smell of lime juice ever-present in the air as she did.

“Can’t wait.”

He walked away for a moment, his nose leading him to the toaster oven in the corner of the counter. He leaned down slightly and looked inside, his mouth practically watering at the sight of the stuffed poblanos, the queso bubbling up as it browned. He turned away and went back to stand next to Camila.

“You don’t mind if I’m in here, do you?”

Camila looked over at him with a perplexed look, giving a confused laugh.

“Why would I mind you being in here? I told you that you’re welcome in my house anytime.”

Angel shook his head and then turned, leaning over and resting his crossed arms on the counter, training his eyes on the pot of rice.

“I meant here in the kitchen. My mom used to hate having me around when she would cook. Probably because my ass was always fucking something up.”

He laughed but Camila could hear the edge in it. Shaking her head, she reached over and gently rested her hand on his forearm. When he looked over at her finally, she offered him a smile.

“Well, I don’t mind. You’re welcome in my house, and in my kitchen whenever you’d like, Angel.”

He said nothing in return for a while, just nodded.

“Thanks, Chiquita.”

That was enough for Camila and she patted his shoulder, pushing him softly.

“Can you get some plates out for me?”

She removed the pot from the stove and put it on the metal rack on the counter, spooning the rice out of it and into a separate bowl as Angel put down his beer and began pulling plates out of the white cabinet. She grabbed the bowl with cilantro and more lime juice, pouring it into the rice and beginning to stir together as Angel placed the four plates down onto the countertop. She began to serve the rice onto the plates and motioned towards the living room.

“You can go get your dad and brother, have them go to the table.”

Angel swallowed down the rest of his beer and headed over into Camila’s living room, Felipe and EZ sitting down on the couch together. They looked up at him as he came out and he pointed behind himself with a thumb.

“Dinner’s done.”

The two of them made their way over to the dinner table and Angel started to as well, Camila’s voice stopping him.

“Angel,”

He looked over at her and found her facing him with two plates and a warm smile.

“Help me set the table?”

Camila smiled, stuffing her hands into the pockets of her hoodie as she watched Angel and Felipe head toward the front door.

“Thank you for coming, Felipe.”

“Thank you for having us, mija.”

Angel opened the door and stepped aside, letting Felipe walk through first, the older man thanking Camila for the dinner once more before making his way towards his truck. Angel turned and wrapped one arm around Camila’s shoulders, pulling her in and kissing her on the top of the head before letting her go and bumping his fist with EZ’s. He threw one more glance at Camila as he started walking out of the house.

“Thanks.”

She nodded and EZ looked between them, a solace coming over him knowing that Angel approved and liked her. As the door closed, EZ turned to face her, closing the distance between them with a few small steps before he was circling his arms around her, hands pressing flat against her back and pulling her into him. She pulled her hands out of her hoodie and raised them, taking EZ’s face into her hands. They stayed there, looking at each other quietly, the rumble of Angel’s Harley starting up outside while she leaned up and pressed a kiss to his right cheek, then his left, then his chin. He laughed when she pushed up high on her tippy toes, her hands pulling his face down some so she could kiss his forehead. She relaxed until she was flat-footed again but kept her hands on his face, her eyes still locked with his as he leaned down, finally feeling her lips against his. The kiss was slow, almost as if they had paused, pulling away slowly but their lips still touching, lingering, before he was pressing forward again, her meeting him halfway. They kissed again and again, his grip on her back getting tighter, her fingers holding his jaw a bit firmer until he was leaning forward, her back arched backward slightly as he pulled her body flush against his, feeling as if he couldn’t get her close enough. She giggled into his mouth, their smiles mirroring each other’s as they pulled away.

“You’re so beautiful.”

Camila laughed bashfully, looking down and trying to hide her face in his chest. He let her for a moment before he hooked his fingers under her chin and pulled her face up again.

“You are.”

Camila looked up at him before pressing a kiss to the center of his chest against his sternum.

“Thank you, Ezekiel. So are you.”

The Mayan laughed and released his iron grip on her, allowing her to pull back some.

“Me halagas.”

She shrugged and tapped her index finger against his cheek.

“It’s true.”

The grinned at each other and began to pull each other in for another kiss when EZ’s phone went off.

He groaned and she laughed, pulling away to let him pull his phone from his kutte. Angel’s name was on the screen and he answered the call.

“What do you want? You just left here.”

“Sorry prospect. Bishop wants us down here for a job.”

EZ allowed his eyes to slip closed, annoyance creeping up on him. All he wanted to do was stay there with Camila, hold her and kiss her and spend time with her, not be out burying bodies or whatever he was going to have to do tonight. He just wanted to be with her, enjoying the sound of her laugh and watching movies but as usual, life seemed to have a sense of humor. Letting out a sigh, he reached out, holding onto her cheek with one hand, running his thumb over her lips and holding the phone with is other.

“Alright. I’ll be there soon.”

Say Dean did give her the necklace. Out of all the horrendous things he’s done to her, why would she decide to wear it tho?

Well, assuming that he is the one to give her the new necklace, which Istrongly suspect he is (although I’ve been wrong before!), I think there are afew reasons she’d wear it. And hey! I’ve had five or six asks since 2.08about Beth and Dean’s relationship, history and age gap, which I had a fewdrafts of, so I’m so sorry! I’m going to highjack your ask to combine/answerthem all! Hope that’s okay.

Putting all myheadcanons and theories aside (at least for the first half of this post haha),let’s just talk about what canon has established about Beth and Dean and theirrelationship over the last 18 episodes.

This is like, verylong (seriously 2,800 words), haha, so I’m putting it under a cut to save all your feeds.

The Marks’ Family ValuesWhile 2.08 clarified a few things about the way Beth, Ruby and Annie wereraised, there’s still a lot that we don’t really know, so let’s look at what wedo know:

1. Beth as a youngteenager crashed her mother’s car out the front of Ruby’s house with her kidsister in the passenger seat because there was no food in the house, and theirmother wasn’t getting out of bed. The implication, from Annie’sdialogue “She just really likes it there” is that this is not a new thing.(2.08)

2. Annie was areckless kid and had a broken arm during a time it’s implied she and Beth were neglected.(2.08)

3. “You knowwhat my mama used to say? You get what you get and you don’t get upset.” – Beth(2.01)

4. Beth played pianofor six years after her parents dropped $$s on it, despite changing her mindand wanting to play violin, which on its own I think can be written off as generalchildish indecisiveness, buuuut I think means a little more than that in thecontext of everything else. (1.05)

5. Beth worked heronly legitimate job in highschool at the Dairy Queen. (1.03)

5. Annie used to gethigh and was sexually active in highschool, and had gossip/rumours spread abouther. Their mother came into the school to address it and, it’s implied, madethe situation a lot worse, causing Annie not want to do the same to Sadie with Sadie’sbullies. (1.04)

6. Then Annie gotpregnant in highschool. (mentioned multiple times)

7. Beth has alwaysbeen the one that Annie has called to bail her out of trouble (mentioned a fewtimes).

9. Beth had postpartumdepression with at least one of her children. (2.05)

The Boland Timeline

While we haven’t gottenconfirmed ages of the characters, we do know that Dean is, at the very least, ayear older than Beth, although I think it’s more likely around three yearsgiven the way it’s framed in the episode. SO.

1. Beth meets Dean atschool when she’s either a freshman, sophomore or junior. He’s a senior. It’sat a point in time where we know her mother is bedridden and Beth spends a lotof time looking after Annie (she even took Annie to Ruby’s father’s funeral,which I think says a lot as to how much Beth – and by proxy Ruby – were lookingafter Annie). (2.08)

2. Beth and Dean havebeen married for 20 years during S1, so that puts them likely at gettingmarried when Beth is somewhere between the age of 20-22. (mentioned multipletimes)

3. Somewhere in thistime period, Dean takes over Boland Motors from his father (one of the photosin the screensaver Dean’s looking at in 2.04 looks like it’s from a grandre-opening, and Beth’s holding a baby boy, so it looks like this could bearound the time Kenny or Danny is born) and Beth becomes a stay-at-home motherand a housewife. Dean also has full control of their finances, and Beth is onan allowance that he also controls.

4. Kenny has hiseleventh birthday in S1, so Beth would’ve been in her late twenties when shehad him.

5. We don’t know theage gap between the rest of the kids (and in fact, those age gaps have obviouslychanged between S1 and S2 lol) but it looks like Jane is now the youngest, notEmma, and that Beth and Dean hadn’t had sex in the two years before gettingpregnant with Jane, and then that they hadn’t had sex since she was born until2.06, which seems to be about five or six years. (2.05 / 1.05)

6. Beth had postpartumdepression after at least Emma (it was the specific given reason as to why theyhadn’t had sex in the two years before getting pregnant with Jane), although Ithink the implication is that it was with more of the kids than just her.

7. Somewhere in allof this, Dean had multiple affairs. He says four, but the implication fromAmber is that it’s more than that, and then I think Beth basically confirmsthat when she says “Dean’s slept with half of Detroit” later in the episode.Plus Dean being a pathological liar isn’t exactly a secret. (2.05)

8. Beth finds out hesleeps with Amber in 1.01 and that he’s mortgaged their house three times andthat their savings are gone. She kicks him out, takes control of theirfinances, and robs Fine & Frugal.

9. Dean tries to winher back a few times - first by appealing to her pragmatism (and I’ll beexpanding on this shortly) - by talking about how they’ll both be worse offfinancially if they separate - before telling her that she’s the love of hislife, then by showing up unannounced to mow the backyard (a traditionally malehousehold job), then by using Kenny’s birthday wish that they were backtogether to try and guilt her (another point I’ll be expanding on shortly!)

10. Cut to Kenny’sbirthday party. He implies Beth’s having an affair with Rio (lols for so manyreasons), they fight, Beth insinuates that she’ll be filing for divorce soon(”You’re still my wife” “Yeah, I’ve gotta get on that.”) and Dean drops TheCancer Lie. Beth is obviously upset, and lets him move back in, but he’ssleeping in Kenny’s room. (1.04)

11. Dean doubles down on the cancer lie by bribing a doctor to tell Bethhe has prostate cancer, but he also covers for her when Turnerfinds the Boland Motors car the girls stole from the lot. He then confronts herabout it in a very paternalistic way (”Why don’t you get a job?” “Sit down!”“These people prey on good, innocent people” “I’m sorry I yelled at you, buteverything’s going to be fine. I’ll take care of you.”). Beth plays along inthe moment, but Dean changes the locks without telling her (and also doesn’thelp her bring the grocery bags in which is sooo telling), reveals he’sswitched hours with a guy at work to be around to ‘protect’ her, and Bethfinally stands up for herself “You have no idea what I’ve done or even who Iam”. (1.06)

12. Dean asks her ifshe’s doing it for the kids. She says yes, and he says it’s all he needs toknow. It genuinely seems to comfort her in the moment. It’s one of their fewnice scenes and I think shows what they were like when they were at their verybest. (1.07)

13. Rio shuts down,Beth is back on an allowance. She tries to get a loan, but their credit hasn’trebounded enough and they still have too much debt. Dean solves the problem bymoving the botox via the doctor he bribed. Dean won’t tell Beth how he did it,but she’s grateful enough to end up coming clean about what she does for Rio.They have their second nice moment. “You don’t deserve anything I did toyou.” + “I think you’re incredible.” (1.08)

14. Dean obviouslyfeels like he and Beth are getting back on track, and is annoyed that Annie’sliving with them temporarily. He builds Beth a craft table with hiddencompartments to hide her fake cash! (1.09)

15. Dean tries toorganise something for their anniversary, which Beth doesn’t agree to rightaway, but does later in the episode when he tries to help her after realisingshit’s going down in the crime world. Dean gets into a car accident whilechecking out another woman, Beth finds out he lied about the cancer (like thatgrenade was never going to blow, Deansy), he came home, Rio shoots him to getback at Beth, but not before revealing a certain degree of intimacy and trustbetween the two of them, which Dean clocks instantly. (1.10 / 2.01)

Then Season 2happens, haha.

So let’s talk about Beth & Dean

I’ve said it a fewtimes before, but when it comes to Beth, we’re ultimately watching somebody whohas been disempowered and disenfranchised for a really, really long time tryingto reclaim a sense of identity and control over her life. Even before 2.08, wewere looking at that through the sense of her marriage to Dean where she had noreal independence. Her entire life was dictated by decisions that he made forthem, personally, professional and financially, and a lot of the first half of Season1 was devoted to her realising exactly how many of those decisions had been bad ones. As the series went on, she reallydid start to gain a sense of financial independence (which is incredibly important)as well as a sense of her own identity and agency, only for that to becompletely crippled again across that four episode arc - 1.09 through to 2.02 –firstly by thinking Rio had played her for a fool (the empty truck), then Rio firingher, then realising that Dean hadplayed her for a fool again (thecancer lie), and then her plot to put Rio away falling apart, Dean being shot,and her realising that she was newly indebted to both of them.

I think what 2.08contextualised was that Beth has never really been allowed to explore who sheis, because there’s always been somebody she’s had to look after. She’s alwayshad dependents and she has lived a life of constant compromise, making her incrediblypragmatic and sacrificing of her own needs and wants. The episode establishedthat Beth spent most if not all of her adolescence caring for Annie and theirmother, married young, and then spent her entire young adult life looking afterDean and their four children.

Likely the appeal ofDean was that he was older, gave her attention in a way that seemed to ‘see’ herat a time where her needs were neglected at home, and likely popular – he’s goofyand fun, as the show’s establishedmultiple times, which I think would be more likeable at that teenage age, and Ithink he probably appealed to Beth as a way out of a troubling home situation.At the end of the day, the show has established pretty firmly that Beth is, whenit comes to her and her own, a survivor. And when I say survivor, I don’t meanthe badass, action heroine sort of survivor - I mean the desperate, do-what-she-has-tosort of survivor. She has an uncanny ability to lie and perform to get herselfout of situations, and also a tendency to sacrifice her own happiness for thoseshe loves. I think when it came to Dean, for a very long time, Beth sacrificedpower and control for a security and safety that she hadn’t had growing up,first for herself (and likely in part for Annie too), and then for her fourchildren.

And I think Dean, priorto the start of the series, had never truly been challenged on any of thecontrol that he wrought over their lives. He’s your classic embodiment of whitemale privilege, and I think he has all the baggage that comes with that,including a firm belief in gender roles, a heady sense of entitlement, and asubconscious expectation that things will usually work in his favour. The factthat he started dating Beth when she was so young, that he inherited BolandMotors from his father, and the fact that he blames Beth’s postpartum depressionfor his affairs too I think drasticallyemphasises that. We talk a lot about the power play between Beth and Rio, butBeth and Dean, since 1.01, have been in a power play of their own – Beth in herdesire to break out of their traditional roles, to ‘steer the ship’, and toreally put her family in a more secure position in life (something she realisedDean was incapable of doing), and Dean in his desire to keep them in their traditional roles, to ‘steer the ship’, and tokeep the status quo (I mean, hell, the fact that he was checking out anotherwoman on his way to his anniversary dinner with Beth in 1.10 says a lot about exactly how little he wants things tochange).

In what is typical ofpeople who are nurturers/carers or have been forced into nurturer/carerpositions in their life, Beth also seems to feel guilt to a disproportionatedegree, and in a way that often seems to cancel out any other emotion,including her anger. This is established pretty early in season one in smallways - her snipping with Annie then immediately back pedalling when sherealises Annie might lose custody of Sadie, with not being able to throw Kennythe birthday party he wants, with her telling Dean about what she does for Rioafter Dean offloads the botox, and then reiterated in big ways this season -nursing Dean after he’s been shot, crawling into bed with Kenny after he gotcaught binge eating at school, going above and beyond to get the dubby backafter Jane feels neglected, I’d even argue that the whole situation with MaryPat has partially been fuelled by guilt for putting Mary Pat in that situationin the first place when she’s a widow with four young children.

And I think Dean knows this! He has guilted her so much across the course of this show, often in a way to deflectfrom his own shortcomings or to ultimately playher. He gaslights her all the time,and she often doesn’t even realise it, which demonstrates, to me at least, howoften he’s done it over the course of their 20+ year relationship. The wholething about the cancer lie in the first place was to back her into a corner,which he succeeded in doing. He guilted her about being at Boland Motors andaway from the kids. When Jane went missing, he immediately blamed her and guilted her for her involvement with Rio(instead of………you know……….looking for his daughter), in 2.08, he guilted Beth for checking on her moneybefore untying him after he’d tried to organise a hit on her partner and gottenher robbed blind in the process.

And when the guilt and the manipulation stopped working, he did thething he knew she couldn’t ignore (and that would hurt her the most) which istake the children. Beth is, like I said earlier, a survivor and a sacrificer whenit comes to her and her own. There’s no way she won’t give up everything togive those children what she didn’t have – a mother who she could rely on. I thinkDean’s ultimatum won’t just be about them either. I could be wrong, but I thinkhe’s going to tell her that they have to try again as a couple, and I thinkthat’s what that necklace is going to be about (seriously though, if he givesit to her as a part of the ultimatum, everything about it symbolically is acollar), and she’ll put it on for her children, and I think it’s all honestlygoing to push her over the edge in a really big way before the season’s over.

I’ve mentioned this in other posts, but I think Beth fully was intendingto leave Dean before the cancer lie, but then she needed to care for him(again, a manipulation I think Dean knew would work because of Beth’s historycaring for her mother and Annie), and then the shooting (same reason, plus theadded bonus of her having caused it). Since then, I think she has almostcompletely emotionally divorced him – having sex with Rio, taking over BM,checking on the money first, not letting him back into her bed – is all verytelling of this, and I think she had likely had her pragmatic hat on and waswaiting until she could feasibly balance all the pieces in her life on her ownbefore filing for divorce. Of course, that’s now blown up with Dean holding thechildren essentially hostage.

And look, do I thinkDean loves Beth? I do actually, in his own way. Do I think Beth loves Dean? Ithink she did, but like she said to Ruby – Dean’s not a soulmate for her, oreven a partner. Beth and Dean should’ve maybe briefly dated in highschool andthen broken up, but they’re both in too deep now, and I don’t think anythingshort of a bullet or an arrest is going to easily disentangle them.

Characters: Emily & Aaron Hotchner (Hotchniss, and yes, they are already married here); Jade (Hotchniss daughter, from Victorious), Beck (Victorious), the team of Season 7, the gang of Hollywood Arts (the name oft he school doesn´t change, only the location :D) (Victorious)

Warnings: none really, swearing (those of you who watch Victorious know how Jade is so), fluff (yep, that´s a warning)

A/N: hi, so i had this idea in my head for a little while now. I always wanted to write a Hotchniss OS with them having a daughter and since i bingewatched too much Victorious lately (blame Netflix), i wanted to combine those two shows. It´s not necessary that you know or watch Victorious to read this OS.

For those of you who don´t know Victorious: it´s actually a kids/teen show about a bunch of teens going to a school for actors, writers and singers called Hollywood Arts. The show is set in Los Angeles, California. For this OS I needed to change the location to something closer, sorry. The character I chose to play Hotchniss daughter, Jade West, reminds me of Emily in her teen years. So I chose her as the Hotchniss child. I can link you some videos of the show if you are interested and to get a better impression of Jade.

„If I see any more of these case files on my desk, I think I´m gonna be sick.“, JJ groaned as she opened the next file to start working on it.

„Agreed. I could use some coffee. Anyone want some?“, Reid asked as he got up and stretched his muscles.

„Well, I could use some.“, Derek, JJ and Reid heard someone say from behind them.

Derek was the first one to turn around and a small smile creeped up his face.

„Well, if that isn´t our Mini-Prentiss and her Mister Charming.“, he laughed and got up to hug Jade.

„Yeah, don´t call me that.“, Jade said after she pulled away from him and only gave a short wave towards Reid & JJ, before she took Beck´s hand again and leant onto him for support.

„What can we help you with?“, JJ wanted to know as she got up from her desk and walked closer towards the teen.

„I´m looking for my parents. I called them like a billion times today and no one picked up the stupid phone. So I decided to come here during lunch break and talk to them.“, Jade explained.

„We´ve been busy all morning with paperwork. Maybe they overheard you calling and..“, Reid started to explain but got interrupted by Jade.

„Yeah, whatever. Are they here? It´s really important.“, Jade asked impatiently and tapped with her foot.

„They are in your Dad´s office going over a case file.“, Derek answered and pointed towards the office with the closed blinds and the closed door.

„Thanks, D!“, Jade smiled before she made her way up the stairs with her boyfriend.

Carefully, she knocked at the door and waited for a reply.

„Come in.“, she heard the serious voice of her father. Slowly, she opened the door and was met with her parents looking at her and Beck, small smiles showing on their faces.

„Hey Mom, Hey Dad.“, Jade greeted them as she walked towards them so give them a quick hug.

„Hey honey, Hi back.“, Aaron greeted back at which Beck only replied witha slight wave.

„I called you. Many times.“, Jade began talking and she stood between her parents next to her fathers desk, while Beck still stood in the doorframe.

„Oh god, sorry. We´ve been busy all morning and didn´t have time to check our phones.“, Emily said as she took out her phone to see that her daughter was indeed right. She had 50 missed calls and basically many more unanswered text messages from her.

„Yeah..it´s okay..I´m here now.“, Jade replied, „there´s something we need to talk about.“

„What is it? Are you in trouble?“, Hotch immediatley asked, concerned.

„What..no, Dad. I´m not in trouble. It´s just…you remember me talking about the Full Moon Jam. This big gig at our school Friday night.“, Jade began explaining and looking at her parents.

Hotch and Emily looked at eachother, both not really remembering what their daughter was talking about. They tried to hide it, but since Jade was the daugther of two highprofessional profilers, she knew what was going on.

„You forgot, did you?“, she said, a bit of disappointment lacing in her voice.

„No, we didn´t it´s just..“, Emily began, but got interrupted by Jade.

„Yeah whatever. Anyway, what I wanted to ask was if you´ll be there and see me perform. Because Sikowitz really needs to know until today and i told him i´m gonna talk to you about it. So, are you coming? It´s in two days. Please. “, Jade asked.

Hotch and Emily looked at eachother and sighed. Aaron got up and walked closer to his daughter and right from there on, Jade knew what their answer was.

„Jade, we would love to come, really, but..“, Hotch started but also he was interrupted by his daugher.

„But you can´t, because you´ve got to work and work is important. I got it, thanks.“, Jade hissed and grabbed her bag she had dropped onto the floor before she started to turn around only to be stopped by her father.

„Jade..“, he said, but Jade wasn´t having any of it.

„No, it´s okay Dad. I´m used to it. How could I possibly think that for one time, I would be more important than this damn job? I´m so dumb.“, Jade answered as she turned around, staring at her father.

„Maybe if you would have told us earlier, there would have been a chance to come, but you know our job.“, Emily explained and tried to reason with her daughter, but it seemed like it only made things worse.

„If I would have told you earlier? Mom, I´m going to this school now for over two years. You actually chose this school for me and yet, you haven´t been to a play I was in or which I wrote, you haven´t seen me perform yet. It´s been two fucking years. And every fucking time, I told you early enough, but everytime, something else was more important than I was. So don´t make this out to be my fault okay? Because the only one´s to blame are you.“, Jade screamed and with this, she turned around and ran off, leaving her boyfriend and her shocked parents behind.

„I-I better go now too. I-It was nice seeing you, Mr. And Mrs. Hotchner.“, Beck said as he waved goodbye and left the office as well to go after Jade.

„She hates us, Aaron. What kind of parents are we?“, Emily stuttered, tears gathering in her eyes at the realization of how much they must have hurt their daughter. Hotch just stepped forward and embraced his wife in a tight hug, but as much as he tried to console Emily, he was plagued by the same thoughts. Thoughts about what terrible parents they were.

Right after the fight between Jade and her parents, she and Beck had rushed out of the building and back to their school where they met up with the rest of their friends.

„What´s up?“, Beck greeted them as he and Jade sat down at their usual table.

„We were just talking about the Full Moon Jam on Friday and..“, Tori said at which Jade got up and left.

„Wow, what did I do this time?“, Tori wondered. She and Jade don´t have the best of relationship and wouldn´t consider themselves as friends, yet.

„It´s nothing you did, Tori. Don´t worry. It´s just…the Full Moon Jam might not be Jade´s favorite topic to talk about today.“, Beck explained and started to eat his food he had gotten on the way back from school.

„What do you mean? She can be really proud of herself because she´s singing this solo.“, André asked, wondering what got his friend so upset.

„Well, Jade and I, we´ve been visiting her parents at work before we came to you guys because she asked them to come and watch her perform on Friday night.“, Beck started and basically everyone at the table knew how this story might end. „They said no?“, Robbie guessed.

„Yep. They are too busy with work. Jade just got really angry and frustrated and they fought. Then she just ran off and yeah. On the way back here, she didn´t say a word. You know, i´ve seen jade in basically every mood, but this one? I think she´s really sad and hurt that her parents declined her invitation again.“, Beck finished talking and looked at his friends.

„I feel so bad for her. I mean, have her parents ever been to a play before where she was in or which she wrote?“, Tori asked. She had just recently joined Hollywood Arts and didn´t know her friends all that well up to now. „No, I don´t think so.“, Cat answered, „at least, I can´t remember. I don´t even know how her parents look like.“

The group sighed. Suddenly, everyone lost appetite and felt quite bad for her friend.

„I wish there is anything we could do.“, Tori sighed to which the friends agreed.

„Yeah..me too. But for now, I´m gonna go and look for her. See you later.“, Beck said and got up, looking for his girlfriend.

It was already after 10pm when Emily and Aaron finally arrived back home. Why was paperwork always so much more work than being away on a case? They had tried to get in contact with Jade all day long, but she always declined the calls or didn´t reply to any textmessages. Arriving back home, the couple was hoping to talk with their daughter and explain everything to her though they knew that it was probably too late for that.

Entering the house, Emily noticed Jade´s favorite boots next to the cupboard in the hall way, a sign that she must be at home. „Jade, we´re home.“, Emily shouted through the house as she got rid of her coat and shoes. Aaron did the same and followed his wife to their daughters room.

Emily carefully knocked at the door and waited for a reply, but nothing happened. Slowly, she opened the door and saw Jade laying on the bed with her earpods in.

„Jade.“, she tried again, but the young girl didn´t seem to hear her mother. This is why Emily decided to walk towards her and tapped on her shoulder.

„Jesus Christ. Are you trying to kill me?“, Jade screamed as she got kind of frightened since her back had been facing the door and she didn´t hear anyone coming in.

„Sorry, we were calling for you, but we got no reaction.“, Aaron explained. „Oh.“, Jade said, but put her earpods back in and turned the music up more. Aaron rolled his eyes and bent down to put the earpods away from his daughter.

„Hey, I was enjoying this music.“, Jade hissed angrily and sat up, trying to get her phone back.

„And you can have it back any second, but first we need to talk.“, Emily said as she sat down on the bed opposite of Jade.

„There is nothing to talk about.“, Jade snorted and laid back in her bed facing the ceiling and staring up to it.

„You sure? Because I personally think there is a lot we need to talk about.“, Hotch argued and took a seat in the chair across from Jade´s bed.

„No. Don´t think so. Can I have my phone back?“, Jade asked, not daring to look at her parents.

„Jade!“, Emily warned her daughter.

„What, Mom?“, Jade said angrily as she sat up, „I got it, okay? You´re busy, you can´t come watch me perform, I´m used to getting my hopes up, but them being smashed down in a heart beat. So, it´s fine. Really. I´m used to the fact, that this damn FBI job is more important than I am.“, Jade got up and began to look for her favorite hoodie in her cupboard.

„You know that this is not true, Jade. We love you more than our job.“, Hotch argued. „Really? Haha, okay…well, then I´m either blind or you´re bad at showing it, because I can´t happen to see that you´re caring.“, Jade laughed.

„Look, we´re really sorry, but you know Strauss and everything that happened last year and we really need to..“, Emily started but got interrupted by Jade.

„Yeah, yeah…You´re sorry. Right. I´m sorry. For thinking that my feelings matter. For thinking that for once, I would be your number one priority. I mean, you actually wanted me to go to this school in first place, yet you never were around to see any of my plays or shows or whatever.“

„Jade..“, Aaron began.

„No…I was always the one who had no one with her. Everyone had always some kind of company: Tori, Beck, André, Robbie, Cat, hell even Sinjin. But me, I´m always the loner. The one who no one cares about. There is always something that comes before me, an unsub, paperwork, Strauss. I stopped counting after it happened the second time. But you know what? I´m done. I´ve got it. Really. I won´t bother you with it any longer.“, Jade kept on talking why she at the same time got up and gathered some stuff in her bag and grabbed her keys.

„Jade….we´re really sorry.“, Emily said, choking on tears.

„Yeah..whatever.“, Jade hissed and walked past them out of her own room to the front door where she put on her shoes and turned around to her parents again, „I´m at Beck´s for the night, if you even care. Can I have my phone now?“, she asked and held out her hand, waiting for her Dad to put the phone back into it. When he gave her the phone, she turned to the door and openend it and before Hotch and Emily even knew, she was gone.

„She hates us.“, Emily sobbed as she lay next to Aaron in their shared bed.

„No, Emily. She doesn´t hate us. She´s just angry and sad. It´s her way of coping with it.“, the man tried to calm down his wife. He held her close to him and rubbed her back in soothing circles.

„No, Aaron. She hates us and to be honest, she has every right to do so. I mean what kind of parents are we? We always knew that it would be hard to have a child and both of us working in such a stressful and busy job, but never in my life did I plan to do such a bad job as a mother. I always wanted to be better than my own mother and look at me now, I´m even worse than she was.“

„Okay, Em, stop right there.“, Aaron warned as he carefully sat up, bringing Emily with him, „First of all, you´re not a bad mother. Get this out of your head okay? Yes, we knew that it would be stressful and yes, I didn´t expect it to be so hard, but let´s take this as a chance to be better, to grow. Eventually, Jade will calm down and she´ll understand. I know, this doesn´t make things better and we have a lot of work to do to make it up to her. But we´re not giving up, okay? We can do this.“

„I just feel so bad. Did you see the look in her eyes? Like, she is always the one who doesn´t care or doesn´t feel bothered by any of this. But when I looked her in the eyes, I saw me. I saw how hurt she was, how sad and disappointed. This gig, this school means everything to her. She never ever let us in before. She mostly never shares things with us that she cares so deeply about because she´s scared of getting hurt or rejected. And guess what we did?“, Emily explained and sighed.

And right in that moment, Aaron knew that his wife was right. Jade was one of the girls, that wasn´t scared to speak their mind. She doesn´t have a problem with speaking back and she always stands her ground. She´s stubborn and hardworking, just like her mother, and she barely let people in, not even her boyfriend Beck. Because she was scared of getting hurt. And this is exactly what happened now, and the more he thought about it, the more he felt bad about it, and if he was completley honest with himself, he totally deserved to feel like that.

„I hate them.“, Jade exclaimed as she let herself fall down onto Beck´s couch.

„Jade..“,Beck started but got interrupted by his girlfriend.

„No, I mean it. I have this feeling they don´t really care about me going to this school and me living my dream there. But I don´t get why, because they send me there in first place. And can´t they understand that I don´t wanna be a stupid federal agent or lawyer or whatever?“, Jade screamed and threw her hands around. Beck quickly grabbed them and held them down.

„Stop.“, he simply said and looked Jade deep into her eyes and this was that moment, when the gates broke and all the emotions Jade had inside her broke loose. Jade was never the one to cry, she never openly shared her emotions, but right now, she felt safe to do so and all she felt was hurt and sadness. Beck gathered his sobbing girlfriend in his arms and tried to calm her down.

„It´s okay, babe. It´s gonna be okay.“, Beck whispered as he soothingly rubbed her back and kissed her forehead.

„I-I don´t know..I-I never felt this..this vulnerable. Hell, I never cried. What´s wrong with me?“, Jade exclaimed as she carefully leaned back against the sofa.

„You´re also human, Jade. Eventhough you don´t wanna see it. You´re a human being with feelings and those feelings get hurt just as easily as any others. That´s normal and it´s okay to feel things, to feel sad and overwhelmed and most importantly, it´s okay to show those emotions. You don´t need to hide them, at least not from me. I love you no matter what.“, Beck said and he brought Jade back into his embrace, the teenager clinging to his shirt.

„I don´t know what I would do without you. I´m sorry for being annoying, most of the time.“, Jade said at which Beck laughed.

„I wouldn´t have it any other way.“, he smiled down at Jade and again kissed her forehead before silence spread between the couple.

„I just thought that this one time, only this one time, they would actually care about what I´m doing in school, that they would show interest. I don´t know why I actually believed that this would happen, but here I am. I mean, I get it. This job is important, I understand it. But maybe…“

„No, Jade. This job can´t be more important than you. There is no way in hell that parents should put their jobs before their kids. I mean, okay…it´s a quite stressful job and you know your parents got my respect for doing it, but there should be a way to actually combine work and private life. It shouldn´t be either work or private life. Never in a billion years.“, Beck argued. It hurt his heart to see his strong girlfriend like this and he was ready to punch somebody. He understood that this job was important to the Hotchners, but he didn´t understand how Jade could only come in second place?

Jade sighed and gently laid against Beck´s shoulder closing her eyes. „I know, but there is nothing I can do to change their mind. Guess I have to live with the fact that they will never be interested in me or my life. But at least I got you.“, she said as she smiled and looked up to her boyfriend.

Beck smiled back and leaned forward to place a kiss on her lips. „Always.“

It turned Friday, and still things hadn´t changed in the Hotchner household. After the night at Beck´s place, Jade had returned home after school only to find the house empty, but what did she expect? The tension between the family was so thick that one could practically cut it with a knife. Ever since Jade had returned back home from school and her parents back home from work, she didn´t leave her room and if she did, then only to go to the bathroom or to grab something to drink. Later that night, she left to go back to school for rehearsals, not bothering to tell her parents where she´s going or what she´s doing. In general, she hasn´t been talking to them ever since the fight on Wednesday. At work, Aaron had asked Rossi and JJ, the godparents of Jade for advice, but nothing they told him could make him feel better about himself. Rossi even made him feel worse.

And now, it turned Friday. The day of Jade´s big gig. The whole school was there, all the people getting ready to perform. All the people showing her families around the school. Everyone, but Jade. Her heart hurt and was full of sadness, but she needed to focus on her song. So she went to get ready, not knowing that the evening would take an interesting turn.

„What are you two clowns still doing here?“, Rossi exclaimed as he entered Hotch´s office in which Emily was also working on her paper work. Ever since the two of them got married, she basically didn´t use her desk anymore and always did her work up in Aaron´s office.

„We have work to do and..“, Hotch explained, but Rossi wasn´t having any of it.

„No, no you don´t.“, he walked towards the desk and grabbed the casefiles from them.

„Dave..“, Emily argued but got shushed by the Italian.

„Now you two listen to me very closely. There is this girl, who happens to be my little stubborn, but talented and loveable goddaughter and she´s having this gig at her school tonight. She´s terribly sad that her parents chose work over her. Now, I don´t know about you, but I think you have a lot of making up to do. I suggest you start by going there.“, he said and placed the files back on Hotch´s desk, but still out of his reach.

„But..“, Emily started, but got again interrupted by the italian. „No buts, Emily. Show Jade that you care about her, that you are interested in the things she does. Show her that she can still trust you.“, David argued and looked at both of his friends, „you better decided quick, because the gig is about to start and you still have to go there and it´s rushhour.“

Hotch and Emily looked at eachother, but in Dave´s opinion, they were taking too much time.

„Okay, let´s get up, up, up.“, he ushered them out of their chairs and handed them their coats and pushed them out of the office, „go! Hurry! You don´t wanna be late! I expect a full report later tonight, when I come over to your place. You´re welcome.“, David smiled as he watched his two friends leave.

„Now I know where Jade got her stubborness from.“, he joked and the rest of the time laughed at it, hoping that the couple would arrive in time.

It was almost stage time for Jade and she kept looking through the crowd, still no sign of her parents. Sadly, she shook her head and went backstage to get ready when André and Beck walked towards her.

„You ready?“, André wanted to know.

„Yeah, whatever. Let´s get it over with.“, she replied at which André nodded and quickly left.

„Hey, you´re gonna be amazing.“, Beck tried to reassure his girlfriend and kissed her before he also left to go into the crowd.

Jade took a deep breath before she heard her name being called out and she had to enter the stage. She barely had any time to skim the crowd one last time before the music began to play and she started to sing along.

As loud as she could, she continued singing the song she had wrote for this special day. She had been so proud o fit and so desperatley wanted to show it to her parents, but they didn´t care, so here she was. Alone. Again. Expressing all her feelings in that one song that meant the world to her.

She continued singing like that until the song was over and she felt kind of relieved. The crowd seemed to love her song. At least, someone cared. After she bowed down, she shared a quick smile with Beck who was sitting front row, before she went backstage and was greeted by all her friends.

„This was so good, Jade.“, Cat said and hugged her friend.

„Thank you!“, Jade smiled and hugged her back, one thing she barely did.

„She´s right. This was insane. You can be proud of you.“, Tori agreed, smiling at Jade.

„Thanks, Vega. I appreciate this.“

„Hey, look who I found in the crowd.“, the group heard Beck say and at his voice, Jade turned around not trusting her eyes.

„Mom? Dad? What…what are you doing here?“, Jade stuttered in disbelieve. Her parents, they were here, right in front of her. Wait? Had they beend there to watch her perform as well?

„We didn´t want to miss our little girl performing her first selfwritten song.You were fantastic. Absolutley brilliant. We´re so proud of you.“, Hotch smiled as he stepped closer and carefully hugged his daughter.

„B-But work..“, Jade stuttered after she let go of her father and hugged her mother. „Nothing in this world should be more important than you, Jade. We learned our lesson and we´re so so sorry. I hope you can give us a second chance.“, Emily asked her and Jade looked at Beck who gave her a quick nod.

„Okay.“, Jade smiled and again, hugged both of her parents, „but you know I´m still mad. Kinda.“

„We know and you have every right to be. But we feel really bad.“, Hotch said again.

„But wait, how did you change your mind and come here?“, Tori asked from behind the family.

„Well, we may have had a little help from your godfather.“, Aaron stuttered. „He basically kicked us out of the office.“, Emily admitted.

„You gotta love Dave.“, Jade laughed.

The parents smiled at their daughter, feeling relieved that she was willing to give them a second chance.

„Wait, you said that you wanted to make it up to me right?“, Jade smirked as she looked at her parents.

„Oh, oh no, i know this look.“, Emily said as she looked at her husband.

„Well, maybe we could all go out to dinner now. I´ll bring my friends..and Tori, and you bring your friends. And then we all gonna get sushi and you pay.“, Jade suggested.

Hotch groaned, but got hit in the side by his wife and said: „Of course, that´s the least we can do.“

„Great, meet you at the Sushi palace by 10?“, Jade asked.

„Anything for you.“, Emily said.

“I know every family has its problems. But I admire those that stick together.” - Unknown
