Commander John J. Adams (Leslie Nielsen), Altaira (Anne Francis), and Robby the Robot Forbidden Planet (1956) - directed by Fred M. Wilcox and starring Walter Pidgeon, Anne Francis, and Leslie Nielsen. Screenplay written by Cyril Hume from an original story by Irving Block & Allen Adler. It is a CinemaScope production out of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer shot in Eastman Color by cinematographer George J. Folsey. The piece features a musical score ("electronic tonalities") by Louis & Bebe Barron. Loosely based around William Shakespeare's play "The Tempest", the story sees Nielsen and the crew of the C-57D spaceship sent to the remote planet of Altair IV. Where once was a colony of Earthlings, now the only inhabitants are Dr Morbius (Walter Pidgeon), his daughter Altaira (Anne Francis) and Robby, a highly sophisticated Robot that Morbius has built.

Now for a classic Scifi lady, Altaira Morbius from one of the greatest Scifis ever made: Forbidden Planet ('57). It's based on The Tempest, takes place in space, has an incredible mystery, great script, awesome effects (which includes astounding monster animation done by the folks at Disney), etc. etc. I can't sing its praises enough. But anyway, watch it when you can and put down your phone so you can really immerse yourself in it. ^.^

Loosely based on Shakespeare’s Tempest, this film taught me that suggestion coupled with the viewer’s imagination was more than enough to convey narrative.

The Bellerophon Expedition landed on the fourth planet orbiting the star Altair. Their goal was to establish an Earth Colony. But the crew began dying mysteriously. Most of the remaining survivors attempted to leave but shortly after lift-off the ship was vaporized. Only the chief scientist, Dr. Edward Morbius and his wife remained and were unharmed. When their daughter was born they named Altaira, in honor of the planet. She was the first and only human born on Altair IV. Dr. Morbius evidence of the planet’s original inhabitants... the Krell, a highly advanced native race that perished overnight 200,000 years before. They left behind amazing technology that he was barely able to understand.

Tonight’s entertainment at Casa Old School Sci Fi is the 1952 comedy “Dreamboat” starring Clifton Webb and Ginger Rogers.

Not science fiction but look who else is in the cast: Jeffrey Hunter (Captain Christopher Pike from “Star Trek”) and an almost unrecognizably young Anne Francis (Altaira Morbius from “Forbidden Planet”).

ADDENDUM: jmstater reminds me that I unforgivably forgot to mention Elsa Lanchester (the eponymous “Bride of Frankenstein”) is a supporting player in the film.
