Amazon illegally interferes with an historic UK warehouse election
Tumblr media
I'm in to TARTU, ESTONIA! Overcoming the Enshittocene (Monday, May 8, 6PM, Prima Vista Literary Festival keynote, University of Tartu Library, Struwe 1). AI, copyright and creative workers' labor rights (May 10, 8AM: Science Fiction Research Association talk, Institute of Foreign Languages and Cultures building, Lossi 3, lobby). A talk for hackers on seizing the means of computation (May 10, 3PM, University of Tartu Delta Centre, Narva 18, room 1037).
Tumblr media
Amazon is very good at everything it does, including being very bad at the things it doesn't want to do. Take signing up for Prime: nothing could be simpler. The company has built a greased slide from Prime-curiosity to Prime-confirmed that is the envy of every UX designer.
But unsubscribing from Prime? That's a fucking nightmare. Somehow the company that can easily figure out how to sign up for a service is totally baffled when it comes to making it just as easy to leave. Now, there's two possibilities here: either Amazon's UX competence is a kind of erratic freak tide that sweeps in at unpredictable intervals and hits these unbelievable high-water marks, or the company just doesn't want to let you leave.
To investigate this question, let's consider a parallel: Black Flag's Roach Motel. This is an icon of American design, a little brown cardboard box that is saturated in irresistibly delicious (to cockroaches, at least) pheromones. These powerful scents make it admirably easy for all the roaches in your home to locate your Roach Motel and enter it.
But the interior of the Roach Motel is also coated in a sticky glue. Once roaches enter the motel, their legs and bodies brush up against this glue and become hopeless mired in it. A roach can't leave – not without tearing off its own legs.
It's possible that Black Flag made a mistake here. Maybe they wanted to make it just as easy for a roach to leave as it is to enter. If that seems improbable to you, well, you're right. We don't even have to speculate, we can just refer to Black Flag's slogan for Roach Motel: "Roaches check in, but they don't check out."
It's intentional, and we know that because they told us so.
Back to Amazon and Prime. Was it some oversight that cause the company make it so marvelously painless to sign up for Prime, but such a titanic pain in the ass to leave? Again, no speculation is required, because Amazon's executives exchanged a mountain of internal memos in which this is identified as a deliberate strategy, by which they deliberately chose to trick people into signing up for Prime and then hid the means of leaving Prime. Prime is a Roach Motel: users check in, but they don't check out:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/09/03/big-tech-cant-stop-telling-on-itself/
When it benefits Amazon, they are obsessive – "relentless" (Bezos's original for the company) – about user friendliness. They value ease of use so highly that they even patented "one click checkout" – the incredibly obvious idea that a company that stores your shipping address and credit card could let you buy something with a single click:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1-Click#Patent
But when it benefits Amazon to place obstacles in our way, they are even more relentless in inventing new forms of fuckery, spiteful little landmines they strew in our path. Just look at how Amazon deals with unionization efforts in its warehouses.
Amazon's relentless union-busting spans a wide diversity of tactics. On the one hand, they cook up media narratives to smear organizers, invoking racist dog-whistles to discredit workers who want a better deal:
https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2020/apr/02/amazon-chris-smalls-smart-articulate-leaked-memo
On the other hand, they collude with federal agencies to make workers afraid that their secret ballots will be visible to their bosses, exposing them to retaliation:
https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/amazon-violated-labor-law-alabama-union-election-labor-official-finds-rcna1582
They hold Cultural Revolution-style forced indoctrination meetings where they illegally threaten workers with punishment for voting in favor of their union:
https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/31/business/economy/amazon-union-staten-island-nlrb.html
And they fire Amazon tech workers who express solidarity with warehouse workers:
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/amazon-fires-tech-employees-workers-criticism-warehouse-climate-policies/
But all this is high-touch, labor-intensive fuckery. Amazon, as we know, loves automation, and so it automates much of its union-busting: for example, it created an employee chat app that refused to deliver any message containing words like "fairness" or "grievance":
https://pluralistic.net/2022/04/05/doubleplusrelentless/#quackspeak
Amazon also invents implausible corporate fictions that allow it to terminate entire sections of its workforce for trying to unionize, by maintaining the tormented pretense that these workers, who wear Amazon uniforms, drive Amazon trucks, deliver Amazon packages, and are tracked by Amazon down to the movements of their eyeballs, are, in fact, not Amazon employees:
https://www.wired.com/story/his-drivers-unionized-then-amazon-tried-to-terminate-his-contract/
These workers have plenty of cause to want to unionize. Amazon warehouses are sources of grueling torment. Take "megacycling," a ten-hour shift that runs from 1:20AM to 11:50AM that workers are plunged into without warning or the right to refuse. This isn't just a night shift – it's a night shift that makes it impossible to care for your children or maintain any kind of normal life.
Then there's Jeff Bezos's war on his workers' kidneys. Amazon warehouse workers and drivers notoriously have to pee in bottles, because they are monitored by algorithms that dock their pay for taking bathroom breaks. The road to Amazon's warehouse in Coventry, England is littered with sealed bottles of driver piss, defenestrated by drivers before they reach the depot inspection site.
There's so much piss on the side of the Coventry road that the prankster Oobah Butler was able to collect it, decant it into bottles, and market it on Amazon as an energy beverage called "Bitter Lemon Release Energy," where it briefly became Amazon's bestselling energy drink:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/10/20/release-energy/#the-bitterest-lemon
(Butler promises that he didn't actually ship any bottled piss to people who weren't in on the gag – but let's just pause here and note how weird it is that a guy who hates our kidneys as much as Jeff Bezos built and flies a penis-shaped rocket.)
Butler also secretly joined the surge of 1,000 workers that Amazon hired for the Coventry warehouse in advance of a union vote, with the hope of diluting the yes side of that vote and forestall the union. Amazon displayed more of its famously selective competence here, spotting Butler and firing him in short order, while totally failing to notice that he was marketing bottles of driver piss as a bitter lemon drink on Amazon's retail platform.
After a long fight, Amazon's Coventry workers are finally getting their union vote, thanks to the GMB union's hard fought battle at the Central Arbitration Committee:
https://www.foxglove.org.uk/2024/04/26/amazon-warehouse-workers-in-coventry-will-vote-on-trade-union-recognition/
And right on schedule, Amazon has once again discovered its incredible facility for ease-of-use. The company has blanketed its shop floor with radioactively illegal "one click to quit the union" QR codes. When a worker aims their phones at the code and clicks the link, the system auto-generates a letter resigning the worker from their union.
As noted, this is totally illegal. English law bans employers from "making an offer to an employee for the sole or main purpose of inducing workers not to be members of an independent trade union, take part in its activities, or make use of its services."
Now, legal or not, this may strike you as a benign intervention on Amazon's part. Why shouldn't it be easy for workers to choose how they are represented in their workplaces? But the one-click system is only half of Amazon's illegal union-busting: the other half is delivered by its managers, who have cornered workers on the shop floor and ordered them to quit their union, threatening them with workplace retaliation if they don't.
This is in addition to more forced "captive audience" meetings where workers are bombarded with lies about what life in an union shop is like.
Again, the contrast couldn't be more stark. If you want to quit a union, Amazon makes this as easy as joining Prime. But if you want to join a union, Amazon makes that even harder than quitting Prime. Amazon has the same attitude to its workers and its customers: they see us all as a resource to be extracted, and have no qualms about tricking or even intimidating us into doing what's best for Amazon, at the expense of our own interests.
The campaigning law-firm Foxglove is representing five of Amazon's Coventry workers. They're doing the lord's work:
https://www.foxglove.org.uk/2024/05/02/legal-challenge-to-amazon-uks-new-one-click-to-quit-the-union-tool/
All this highlights the increasing divergence between the UK and the US when it comes to labor rights. Under the Biden Administration, @NLRB General Counsel Jennifer Abruzzo has promulgated a rule that grants a union automatic recognition if the boss does anything to interfere with a union election:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/09/06/goons-ginks-and-company-finks/#if-blood-be-the-price-of-your-cursed-wealth
In other words, if Amazon tries these tactics in the USA now, their union will be immediately recognized. Abruzzo has installed an ultra-sensitive tilt-sensor in America's union elections, and if Bezos or his class allies so much as sneeze in the direction of their workers' democratic rights, they automatically lose.

While I'm bitching.
I dont mean to make this a bitching blog, but with them leaving on monday I have time to reconfigure my brain about all of it.
We live in a suburb that butts up to a nature preserve. So we see all kinds of wildlife from coyotes to deer. Most of the wildlife pics from my photo blog are from a nearby park.
There are mice in the garage.
It's a garage. It's an unsealed part of the house that's safe from predators and snow. It's going to get mice.
She wants to live on a farm some day. But she sees a mouse in the garage and suddenly has to rearrange the entire space because the way 'we' store things is attracting rodents. But not the way she just leaves piles and piles of cardboard from chewy or her amazon purchases (seriously a $300 inversion table that she used once and used her partner's credit card to get).
And I dont have much choice in how i store my stuff because the day we moved in they had already decided there was no room for my craft storage (its ugly, basically.) And it all got shoved in the garage.
Where the mice are.
So she sees a mouse and spends the whole day freaking out and moving our stuff around because we're slobs who dont know how to organize our stuff.
And now we cant find anything.
About a year ago, she got on an exercise kick and demanded that I clear my stuff from the garage so they could have an exercise room for themselves. Me and pock are still sharing a small nook that serves as our craft room, and the is no space to really spread out. But she gets an exercise room.
She never exercises. She has a back injury that makes it difficult for her to sit up for long periods of time.
Like... I tried to clear the garage, but I got 4 bins in before I ran out of room in the craft room, and now there's no way for me to access the things in there, either.
So sorry she didnt get her exercise room. We have a porch. We have a living room where you can move the couch. You can go to the park. You have a rec center membership. Sorry you didnt get a poorly ventilated exercise room full of mice.
If I can do yoga three times a week in this house, you can figure it out.
Later, I overhear her talking to her mom on the phone about why she wants to move to North Carolina and she says it's because theres no nature here. Its barren. Nothing will grow in ohio because of the chemicals they use on the farms. Theres no wildlife.
I'm assuming the mice dont count. But our town literally calls itself 'the city of parks.' Theres over 5000 acres of green spaces including a waterfowl preserve and more than one refuge. My boss at parks and rec is a conservationist. My job is to water all the fucking trees we planted last year.
Youd see all kinds of nature if you'd get outside the house, but you never fucking leave.
Which is kind of a minor point in the scheme of things. But it really pisses me off like 'oh poor me I'm a fucking liar.'
I'm so lazy, I wont repurpose an entire room for her benefit while shoving all my shit in a 5×10 space. I'm so awful.

Is there any branded credit card you recommend in particular?
I mean it really boils down to individual shopping habits and needs. I really think the target or amazon cards are best if you’re looking for a branded card you can use frequently with the best benefits both in and outside the store but I would personally go for American Airlines for the points if you travel/want to travel. But you need to keep in mind things like annual fees, interest, and stuff like that.
I wouldn’t go for frivolous cards like TJ MAXX or Sephora. You’re not gonna use those enough to justify it. But maybe the GAP card or Banana Card

Disadvantages and Advantages of e-shopping for Consumers
Disadvantages and Advantages of e-shopping for Consumers
In today's world online shopping has become one of the savviest ways to make purchases. This goes without saying but, online shopping or e-shopping has its pros and cons. That's what I'm here for! We are looking at the top 3 reasons why you should LOVE e-shopping and the top 3 reasons why you should HATE it!
Starting off strong
The top three reasons why you should love e-shopping -
ONE
Time Saving
E-shopping is one of the fastest ways to purchase things on the market without having the hassle of going to the store. Most consumers find themselves taking this easy route as an e-shopper. Now more than ever consumers are buying items and having them expedited to their homes! For example, Amazon offers same day delivery for many items on their website! This allows shoppers to utilize their time doing other things rather than grocery shop, grab quick essentials, etc.…
TWO
Better Prices
When I shopping there is a better chance that you come across coupons. Oftentimes when shopping in store coupons aren't presented to you per the items you are looking to purchase. This way with e-shopping new technology and data collection tools know to generate certain coupons based on items you are adding to your cart, that you're viewing, and at random. This means you get more bang for your buck as an e-shopper!
This technology allows you to also view items that you might miss in store. Online data collection uses the same technologies to run diagnostics on items similar to what you are currently looking at. This program then generates a list of items you “might like” or that are “similar” to your previous purchases. E-shopping gives you a chance to find items you might not even know you liked / wanted / or needed!
THREE
Safety
Unfortunately, in the modern world we live in today safety can be a big concern to many consumers as they leave the comfort of their own home. With e-shopping you no longer have to. One of the best ways to ensure your safety if you have concerns is to stay home! Fortunately, with the advancements of e-shopping leaving the house no longer has to be factor.
A great example of this would be the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time and still after some are afraid to leave their homes. With e-shopping these consumers can have peace of mind while still scrolling through their favorite catalogs and making purchases.
E-shopping comes with many other benefits as well, I am just here to highlight some of the most important or most relatable! E-shopping has continued to keep our every growing world connected to goods, products, and services. Something we should all be grateful for. Covering the reasons why you should love e-shopping are easy, but that doesn't mean e-shopping doesn't come with its downfalls.
With that being said, e-shopping comes with just as many risks and cons. Not that these risks can’t be avoided with proper precautions, they still must be highlighted. That being said…
The top three reasons why you should hate e-shopping -
ONE
Fraud risk
When shopping online and entering your credit card information there's a larger risk of fraud: credit card scams, phishing, hacking, identity theft, counterfeit products, bogus websites, and other scams that are common. The issues with this is you never know when credit fraud is going to occur.
To maximize your safety as a consumer it is best to go into any online shopping / e-shopping experience with knowledge of the company, an understanding of what a bogus website looks like, and the basic idea of what to avoid when entering personal information. Online shopping can be dangerous if as a consumer you are not careful with what you readily offer websites.
TWO
Shipping issues and delays
Another downfall to online shopping is that there can be issues with shipping, including delays, receiving the wrong items, and paying for shipping and returns. As a consumer online shopping can be frustrating for these various reasons. One of the hardest things as an E shopper to understand is that after making a purchase, online items can take quite a while to be received. Not often but sometimes after items are received the consumer realizes they were sent the wrong item, or wrong size, maybe wrong color, and the list could go on. This can be a frustrating process since many companies require consumers to pay for shipping and then pay for returns regardless of return reason. So after receiving items that were incorrect or items that you decided you don't want, having to pay to ship them back you are already spending 2x the money you had originally planned.
THREE
Spending too much time online
Lastly, already as a society we spend far too much time online. Now with e-shopping the screen time continues to rise. This online time can cause disconnected in many areas of individuals lives as well as actual branding disconnects with consumers. The tricky part about now having everything online is the brick-and-mortar business take a hit. Since consumers now don’t HAVE to go into stores human connections dim and phone screen brighten.
Either way e-shopping can be seen as the ally or the enemy. As the economy continues to grow, consumers do what consumers do best, CONSUME! Making e-shopping one of the latest and greatest developments regardless of your personal take.
Understanding boundaries and using online shopping but not abusing online shopping is key to societal success!
After exploring these pros and cons, how do you feel as a consumer? What ways do you think e-shopping has shaped the world we live in now?

Licensing fuckery that flies way over pat's head, continued:
Disney bought Hensen (Company) but did not buy Sesame Street characters. Sesame Workshop remains the owner.
Hensen (Individual) also did not sell rights to shows made by Creatureshop like Farscape or Fraggle Rock. Disney doesn't own Farscape or Fraggle Rock. Hensen (Individual) still does.
Westworld (Warner Bros. TV/HBO co-production; Again, HBO usually avoids these, but in this case it is at least under the same corporate overlord.)
The Larry Sanders Show (HBO/Sony Pictures TV co-production; this is why when Gary Shandling passed away, the show wasn’t available for streaming on HBO, because Sony had likely driven too hard of a bargain. It’s now back on HBO.)
Jack Ryan (Amazon/Skydance/Paramount co-production; sometimes you can even do these as a three way. If the underlying IP is valuable enough, it can demand its own separate pot of profit money.) The Tick, Good Girls Revolt and Sneaky Pete (Sony co-productions).
House of Cards (Media Rights Capital co-production). Orange is the New Black. (Lionsgate co-production) Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. (Warner Bros co-production). Lost in Space: 2018 Series. (Legendary co-production) Marvel Series (Marvel/Disney co-production)
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. (NBC-Universal co-production.) BoJack Horseman. (The Tornante Company co-production)
Each side brings something to the table in a co-productions. The TV producers have all the talent so they demand some sort of backend profit participation. The network is paying money, so they get some sort of participation too.
Then, after the initial agreed upon windows or run is complete, the rights revert back to the TV production company [CM]. (Historically, networks used to not pay for 100% of the costs of a co-production, but with fewer revenue streams, that is becoming the norm.)
This is what the WB/CM arrangement and deal is. While it operates on licensure, it is not a fully licensed product, but rather is allowed to use licensed material while creating new material.
A "licensed" show is just a show that a streamer for example doesn't have a financial stake or downstream revenue in. Like, Nexstar is talking about licensing content from other places than CBS and WB to put on the air. It would benefit from the airtime but does not own that content. Nexstar owns the airtime
The use of licensed CHARACTERS is a funny metaphor of this. If Nexstar owns the airspace, Chaos Machine owns the dev space. WB content is then put inside of it, but it is not only WB content.
This is why the pilot script had these three:
Tumblr media
For example, despite nominal Producer credits listed, CBS has no actual stake on this property, draft, or materials. The only thing they own is Jared Padalecki's ass.
CW pays money to host a show that Jensen made and may or may not have some demands and requests about what content it will air can look like, and WB might have critique on how to use old-SPN characters, but it has no stake over new Winchesters characters, for example.
(I say "the right to" critique. Pointing at my bits on Zaslav and Roth elsewhere, that's really not something I'm foreseeing us having to deal with much from WB)
CW generally folds to WB anyway. Like
lmao
Jensen owns a good chunk, and what he doesn't, I must reinforce, there's nobody to stop him from doing what he wants with the rest anyway
and it's so, so funny to see who quickly shows their asses in their desperation for that to not be true.
At the end of the day the actual like aired, wrapped, distributed product will be owned by WB due to the various ways this bounces around. But like. Story ownership. Character ownership is. Another thing. That's basically going to be a blender.
like genuinely who the fuck do these people think is getting paid when Chaos Machine releases an episode?

Ready For Prime Time
We see it everywhere. Apple Pay. Google Pay. Paypal. Pay with Klarna. Everyone wants a piece of the action, even if it is only a small sliver. With total retail sales at $6.5 trillion, there’s plenty of money to be made at the margin, even if the margin is small.
But now Amazon is extending its reach. Buy With Prime launches at the end of the month, and allows partner retailers to leverage every aspect of Amazon’s might, from order fulfillment to payment processing and returns. Of course, Amazon assesses several payments along the way, from storage to packing and shipping, not to mention credit card processing. Customers get all the same benefits they get when using their Prime account at Amazon. And partner companies can still offer their own order fulfillment and processing if customers opt out of the Prime feature.
In some regards, it’s like being in bed with the enemy. But as they say (whoever “they” is), if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.
Amazon put Buy With Prime into test market last Spring among its existing Fulfilled By Amazon (FBA) clients. It works rather seamlessly: partner retailers simply add a BWP logo and button, all copy and paste just like PayPal code. Oh, and ship some inventory to the nearest Amazon warehouse.
Tumblr media
Partnering with Amazon relieves the small company from having to handle time-consuming (and expensive) order fulfillment responsibilities, storage, as well as shipping, for which Amazon has already brokered huge discounts. Basically, you can “off-shore” multiple layers of your business, expand your reach, and quite possibly enjoy higher sales and profits.
From Amazon’s perspective, this is not all that different from food manufacturers selling off unused capacity by contracting to make private label goods. Amazon is doing the same, albeit in warehousing, packing, and shipping.
There was once a time when Amazon was demonized for being too successful. After all, shopping online necessarily displaces smaller business along the way. But that’s like complaining 110 years ago that auto manufacturers were putting bicycle retailers and farriers out of business. They had to adapt, or go out of business. Today’s small businesses have similarly been forced to evolve or die.
Or partner with Amazon. And to be fair, Amazon will probably take some heat for reaching its tentacles into more of the retail pie.
But Amazon has also reached a plateau, and has begun laying off 18,000 workers. Anything it can do to help put the company in better balance is a good thing, and BWP may very well play a big role.
All things considered, this is a good move for small retailers as well as Amazon. While smaller companies must have an e-commerce presence, managing the back end of that can be a major distraction from storefront operations. Letting the expert—in this case, Amazon—do that is genius for both parties.
And I as a customer find this particularly appealing, because I’ve been clicking those Amazon Buy Now buttons more times than I wish to admit.

As a Credit Specialist, I'm here to share valuable insights on the best department store credit card to consider, especially if you're starting a business and have less-than-perfect credit. Let's dive in.
Why the Home Depot Credit Card is Your Best Bet
Issued through Citi Bank: The Home Depot credit card is issued through Citi Bank, which can be a great option for those with limited credit history or low credit scores.
Versatile for Your Business Needs: Whether you're a handyman, painter, power washer, or starting an e-commerce business, the Home Depot credit card can be a valuable tool to purchase the necessary supplies and materials.
The Unique Benefit of Purchasing Visa Gift Cards
The secret: You can use your Home Depot credit card to purchase Visa gift cards, which can then be used as a payment method for your business ventures, such as selling on eBay or Amazon. However, it's important to note that you shouldn't simply go to Home Depot and only buy Visa gift cards, as this could lead to your card being shut down or frozen.
