Saved! (2004)

Whenever a movie has any kind of religious theme to it, I’m a bit wary. They can easily turn into overly melodramatic, preachy sermons that propose that any and all problems can be solved by going through prayer. Alternatively, they can be more concerned in sticking a big middle finger to organized religion than in telling a story worth sitting through. Whether you’re a devout church-goer or you can only tolerate your Christian friends as long as they never discuss religion, Saved! is a pleasant watch.

When devout Evangelical Christian teen Mary (Jena Malone) is told by her boyfriend, Dean (Chad Faust) that he's gay, she attempts to "cure him" through sex. When she becomes pregnant and he is sent away to a conversion camp, she realizes the school outcasts (which includes Macauly Culkin and Eva Amurri) are the only people who will accept her without judgment and that her old friends, the devout good girls are quick to throw away their friendship.

Saved! has a nice message. It shows that whether or not you believe in Jesus isn't nearly as important as how nice you are to your neighbor but not in a way that beats you over the head. The story blends drama and comedy. It pokes fun without being mean. There’s a strong point about tolerance and acceptance that I particularly liked.

Past the message is a touching story of friendship with elements of sweetness and romance too. The actors play off each other well, which makes their characters feel like real people. It makes you realize what a shame it is that McCaulley Culkin, so good as the wheelchair-bound non-believer Mary befriends isn’t in more movies. He's got many good scenes with Eva Ammuri, playing the only Jewish girl ever to attend their school.  The moments of animosity between. Mary and her former best friend Hilary (Mandy Moore) are nasty but comfortably fit in the teen comedy genre. The film juggles many characters and each has their own stories going on, which helps you accept what's happening and spark some discussion material inside the viewers.

I laughed often during the movie, and when I wasn’t, I smiled consistently. My one criticism is the ultimately conventional plot. Despite the intelligence on display, it doesn't manage to live up to its true potential and never even threatens to knock your socks off.

The gems found in Saved! are the characters, not the plot itself. I can’t think of any bad scenes or even of any that disliked. It deals with important, relevant issues for teens, whom I believe will get a lot from the film. Rebellion, religion, acceptance, sex and teenage pregnancy are all touched upon in one way or another. For the adults, there's stuff to like too. I don’t know if I’d show it to your ultra-conservative grandma but for everyone else in the family, it's a good, perhaps even illuminating picture.
