People in what is now Washington State were smoking Rhus glabra, a plant commonly known as smooth sumac, more than 1,400 years ago.
The discovery, made by a team of Washington State University researchers, marks the first-time scientists have identified residue from a non-tobacco plant in an archeological pipe.
Unearthed in central Washington, the Native American pipe also contained residue from N. quadrivalvis, a species of tobacco not currently grown in the region but that is thought to have been widely cultivated in the past. Until now, the use of specific smoking plant mixtures by ancient people in the American Northwest had only been speculated about.
"Smoking often played a religious or ceremonial role for Native American tribes and our research shows these specific plants were important to these communities in the past," said Korey Brownstein, a former WSU Ph.D. student now at the University of Chicago and lead author of a study on the research in the journal Frontiers in Molecular Biosciences. "We think the Rhus glabra may have been mixed with tobacco for its medicinal qualities and to improve the flavor of smoke."
The discovery was made possible by a new metabolomics-based analysis method that can detect thousands of plant compounds or metabolites in residue collected from pipes, bowls and other archeological artifacts. The compounds can then be used to identify which plants were smoked or consumed.
"Not only does it tell you, yes, you found the plant you're interested in, but it also can tell you what else was being smoked," said David Gang, a professor in WSU's Institute of Biological Chemistry and a co-author of the study. "It wouldn't be hyperbole to say that this technology represents a new frontier in archaeo-chemistry."
Previously, the identification of ancient plant residues relied on the detection of a limited number of biomarkers, such as nicotine, anabasine, cotinine and caffeine. Gang said the issue with this approach is while the presence of a biomarker like nicotine shows tobacco was smoked it doesn't distinguish which species it was.

"Also, if you are only looking for a few specific biomarkers, you aren't going to be able to tell what else was consumed in the artifact," Gang said.
In addition to identifying the first non-tobacco plant smoked in an archaeological pipe, the WSU researchers' work also helps elucidate the complex evolution of tobacco trade in the American Northwest.
Analysis of a second pipe that was used by people living in Central Washington after Euro-American contact revealed the presence of a different tobacco species, N. rustica, which was grown by native peoples on the east coast of what is now the United States.
"Our findings show Native American communities interacted widely with one another within and between ecological regions, including the trade of tobacco seeds and materials," said Shannon Tushingham, an assistant professor of anthropology at WSU and co-author of the study. "The research also casts doubt on the commonly held view that trade tobacco grown by Europeans overtook the use of natively-grown smoke plants after Euro-American contact."
Tumblr media
Korey Brownstein Credit: WSU
Moving forward, the WSU researchers' work could ultimately help scientists studying ancient societies in the Americas and elsewhere around the globe identify which plant species ancient people were consuming, providing important information about the evolution of drug use and similar plant-human dynamics.
Closer to home, the WSU team is also putting their work to use helping confirm connections between ancient plant management practices from before the arrival of Western settlers with cultural traditions of modern indigenous communities such as the Nez Perce. The researchers shared their work with members of the tribe who also used some of the seeds from the study to grow some of the pre-contact tobacco. The smoking of tobacco is a sacred tradition for Native American groups including the Nez Perce, Colville and other northwest Tribes and before now it was impossible to tell which kind of tobacco their ancestors smoked.
"We took over an entire greenhouse to grow these plants and collected millions of seeds so that the Nez Perce people could reintroduce these native plants back onto their land," Brownstein said. "I think these kinds of projects are so important because they help build trust between us and tribal communities and show that we can work together to make discoveries."

When nicotine does enter your body, it breaks down into more than 20 different substances that include anabasine, nornicotine, and cotinine. These by-products are eventually excreted out of your body through urine. According to medical research, it can take over 2 weeks for a person’s blood to reach the same cotinine levels as someone as compared to someone who does not use tobacco. Also, the more you smoke, the longer it takes for nicotine to leave your body. The exact amount of time for the nicotine to clear varies from person to person.

1006-64-0 Direct α-C-H bond functionalization of unprotected cyclic amines
Cyclic amines are ubiquitous core structures of bioactive natural products and pharmaceutical drugs. Although the site-selective abstraction of C-H bonds is an attractive strategy for preparing valuable functionalized amines from their readily available parent heterocycles, this approach has largely been limited to substrates that require protection of the amine nitrogen atom. In addition, most methods rely on transition metals and are incompatible with the presence of amine N-H bonds. Here we introduce a protecting-group-free approach for the α-functionalization of cyclic secondary amines. An operationally simple one-pot procedure generates products via a process that involves intermolecular hydride transfer to generate an imine intermediate that is subsequently captured by a nucleophile, such as an alkyl or aryl lithium compound. Reactions are regioselective and stereospecific and enable the rapid preparation of bioactive amines, as exemplified by the facile synthesis of anabasine and (-)-solenopsin A.

Artists support Palestinian refugee Omar Ben Ali’s struggle for status in Montréal
Tumblr media
Saturday, April 21st, 2018, Tiohtiá:ke (Montréal)
Omar Ben Ali is a Palestinian father, worker and community activist who has been living in Montréal for nearly a decade. Successive Canadian governments have failed to live up to their responsibilities to address the question of Omar's status and statelessness.
Arriving in Canada in 2008, from the Jenin region in the occupied West Bank, Omar applied for refugee status and was refused. At the time, the Canadian government demonstrated little consideration of the well-documented reality of the systemic violence faced by Palestinians in the Israeli occupied West Bank on a daily basis. A recent Human Rights Watch report notes :
“Israel enforces severe and discriminatory restrictions on Palestinians’ human rights, and it builds and supports unlawful settlements in the occupied West Bank. Its security forces appear to use excessive force against Palestinian demonstrators and suspected attackers, raising the spectre of extra-judicial killings. It has renewed the practice of punitive home demolitions.”
Despite this refusal, Canada has never fairly addressed Omar’s case- leaving him without status, but unable to return to Palestine. Instead, Omar has been living in stateless limbo for close to a decade.
Today, Omar is working hard in the city as a low-wage worker, unable to travel or visit his family in occupied Palestine and without the full rights of a permanent resident or a Canadian citizen. Given the governing Liberal Party of Canada’s rhetoric of supporting the rights of refugees and the fact that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau literally campaigned in support of the rights of Syrian refugees in the last election, we point to the fact that today Trudeau’s policies are failing many refugees.
A father of seven children, he has been separated from his wife and family for nearly a decade. Despite these obstacles, Omar has built a meaningful and important life in Montréal. A member of the Palestinian community, he has participated in many community events and is a well-known fixture in larger networks supporting struggles for justice in this city.
As artists living in Montréal, the well being and dignity of all people living in this city is central to our spirit. Today, we write this letter because we can’t remain silent as Omar Ben Ali continues to suffer and we call on the Canadian government to take action to grant Omar status. Just the simple fact that Omar is unable to return to occupied Palestine, due to the restrictions and controls of the Israeli military occupation, illustrates to us clearly that Omar urgently needs status in Canada, for the Canadian government to allow him to live in stateless limbo is irresponsible and inhumane.
As artists, we feel it is important to express our support and to speak out in solidarity with Omar Ben Ali. Our work is rooted in expressing the spirit of life and beautiful moments, but also the struggles we all face to overcome adversity and injustice. Within this context, we extend our solidarity, our hearts and our love to Omar Ben Ali.
Omar’s current campaign for status is something that we support. Tadamon! has been working with Omar and has full information on Omar’s case at : tadamon.ca/omar

Tobacco
(Nicotiana tabacum)
Family: Solanaceae
Habitat: Warm, tropical and subtropical, mild-winter areas. Native to: South America Common Names: Henbane of Peru
A leaf so toxic that it has taken the lives of ninety million people worldwide; so potent that it can kill through skin contact alone; so addictive that it fueled a war against Native Americans; so powerful that it led to the establishment of slavery in the American South; and so lucrative that it spawned a global industry worth over $300 billion.
This opportunistic little plant contains the alkaloid nicotine that wards off insects. Nicotine has an even more useful function from the plant’s perspective: it is so addictive that humans have been persuaded to group it in mass quantity. Today tobacco occupies 9.8 million acres around the globe and continues to take 5 million lives a year, making it one of the world’s most powerful and deadly plants. Some 1.3 billion people around the world hold this plant between their trembling fingers each day.
Nicotiana cultivation began in the Americas and dates back to 5000 BC. There is evidence that Native Americans were smoking the leaves two thousand years ago, but it did not spread to the rest of the world until Europeans discovered the practice when the arrived in America. Within a century, tobacco had migrated to India, Japan, Africa, China, Europe, and the Middle East. The leaves themselves, and later “tobacco notes” attesting to the quality of the crop, were used as legal tender in Virginia. American’s slave trade was born out of a need for more field hands to bring in a profitable tobacco harvest. People didn’t just smoke it; they also believed it could cure migraines, ward off the plague, and ironically, treat coughs and cancer.
But smoking wasn’t embraced by everyone, even in the early days. In 1604 King James I called it “loathsome” and said that it was “harmful to the brain, dangerous to the lungs.” His statement was proven correct time and again over the next four hundred years, but tobacco use only grew.
Nicotine is such a powerful neurotoxin that it’s used as an ingredient in insecticides. Ingesting a leaf is much more harmful than smoking a cigarette because a good deal of the nicotine in cigarettes is destroyed as the cigarette is burned. Nibbling just a few leaves, or making a tea out of the leaves, can quickly bring on stomach cramps, sweating, difficulty breathing, severe weakness, seizures, and death. Prolonged skin contact can also be dangerous: “green tobacco sickness” is an occupational hazard among fieldworkers who must walk through the fields of wet tobacco plants in summer.
Nicotine is not the only weapon possessed by plants in this genus. N. glauca, or tree tobacco, grows to twenty-five feet tall and is widespread in California and throughout the Southwest. It is notable for the presence of another toxic alkaloid, anabasine. Ingestion of just a few leaves has caused paralysis and death. A man was found dead in a field in Texas several years ago; the cause of death could not be determined until a mass spectrometry analysis showed the tree tobacco’s poison in his blood stream.
In spite of its harmful effects, tobacco continues its death march. Enough cigarettes are produced every year to put a thousand smokes into the hands of every man, woman, and child in the world. Other offerings include snuff, chewing tobacco, and the traditional betel quid, which combines Nicotiana with another habit-forming plant, the betel nut. Among some Alaska native tribes, a product called punk ash or iqmik is popular; it is made by mixing tobacco with the ash of a burned mushroom the grows on birch trees. Some tribal members believe it to be safer than cigarettes because it is a “natural” product, and it is used by pregnant women and given to children and teething babies. However, the level of nicotine is much higher, and the ash helps deliver it straight to the brain, causing some public health officials to describe it as “freebasing nicotine.”
In India creamy stuff is popular among women. It is sold in a tube like toothpaste and contains not just tobacco, but also cloves, spearmint, and other tasty ingredients. The manufacturer recommends brushing with it morning and night, and “whenever you need,” including when you are “in a state of despair or depressed.” They suggest that you “let it linger before rinsing your mouth.” One satisfied customer testified that she used it eight to ten times a day.

WHY SMOKING IS ADDICTIVE?
Smoking cigarettes causes addiction, but it’s not just the nicotine involved in that addiction. Cigarette smoke contains a cocktail of chemicals. In addiction to nicotine to nicotine, there’s ammonia, the mild MAO inhibitors, Harman and norharman, and there’s the minor Alkaloids, anabasine, anatabine, cotinine and mysomine (that’s a lot of chemical). Pure nicotine ( diluted of course) is only…

Archaeology information: Specialists establish contents of Maya drug container Scientists from the Washington State College (WSU) have analysed the contents of 14 miniature Maya ceramic vessels to realize an perception into the civilisations’ drug use. The crew discovered traces of a “non-tobacco” plant referred to as Mexican marigold. The container was initially buried greater than 1,000 years in the past, and in addition include traces of dried and cured tobacco, Nicotiana tabacum and N. rustica. The researchers imagine the marigold was blended with common tobacco to make smoking “extra fulfilling”, WSU mentioned. Anthropology postdoc Mario Zimmermann, lead creator of the examine, mentioned the analysis paves the way in which future research investigating different varieties of psychoactive and non-psychoactive vegetation that had been consumed by the Maya civilisation and different historical societies. Dr Zimmerman mentioned: “Whereas it has been established that tobacco was generally used all through the Americas earlier than and after contact, proof of different vegetation used for medicinal or non secular functions has remained largely unexplored. “The evaluation strategies developed in collaboration between the Division of Anthropology and the Institute of Organic Chemistry give us the flexibility to research drug use within the historical world like by no means earlier than. “Once you discover one thing actually attention-grabbing like an intact container it provides you a way of pleasure. “Usually, you’re fortunate if you happen to discover a jade bead. There are actually tons of pottery sherds however full vessels are scarce and supply plenty of attention-grabbing analysis potential.” Archaeologists first found the vessels in 2012, when digging on the outskirts of Mérida, Mexico. Nevertheless, the crew had been solely now in a position to detect what was inside extra precisely due to developments within the discipline. READ MORE: Historical cash amongst extraordinary artefacts recovered by Israel police Now, the researchers analysed metabolomics – small molecules that are present in cells, biofluids, tissues or organisms – to find the vegetation. Beforehand, researchers had been solely in a position to establish historical plans based mostly on the detection of a restricted variety of biomarkers, akin to nicotine, anabasine, cotinine and caffeine. David Gang, a professor in WSU’s Institute of Organic Chemistry and a co-author of the examine, mentioned: “The difficulty with that is that whereas the presence of a biomarker like nicotine reveals tobacco was smoked, it doesn’t inform you what else was consumed or saved within the artifact. “Our method not solely tells you, sure, you discovered the plant you’re excited by, however it can also inform you what else was being consumed.” DON’T MISSArchaeology discover ‘rewriting’ English historical past proved 1,000-year-oldHistorical cash discovered by archaeologists in 2,000-year-old Roman treasureArchaeology information: Farmers uncover 6FT thriller feminine statue  The crew are actually in negotiations with a number of establishments in Mexico as they want to discover extra areas to realize a larger perception into Maya drug use. One other venture they’re presently pursuing is taking a look at natural residues preserved within the dental plaque of historical human stays, WSU mentioned. Shannon Tushingham, a professor of Anthropology at WSU and a co-author of the examine, mentioned: “We’re increasing frontiers in archaeological science in order that we will higher examine the deep time relationships individuals have had with a variety of psychoactive vegetation, which had been (and proceed to be) consumed by people all around the world. “There are a lot of ingenious methods during which individuals handle, use, manipulate and put together native vegetation and plant mixtures, and archaeologists are solely starting to scratch the floor of how historical these practices had been.” if(typeof utag_data.ads.fb_pixel!=="undefined"&&utag_data.ads.fb_pixel==!0)!function(f,b,e,v,n,t,s)if(f.fbq)return;n=f.fbq=function()n.callMethod?n.callMethod.apply(n,arguments):n.queue.push(arguments);if(!f._fbq)f._fbq=n;n.push=n;n.loaded=!0;n.version='2.0';n.queue=[];t=b.createElement(e);t.async=!0;t.src=v;s=b.getElementsByTagName(e)[0];s.parentNode.insertBefore(t,s)(window,document,'script','https://connect.facebook.net/en_US/fbevents.js');fbq('init','568781449942811');fbq('track','PageView') Supply hyperlink #Archaeology #container #contents #Drug #experts #identify #Maya #news

How Long Does Nicotine Stay in Your System? [Tutorial]
There are some companies and federal and state employers that test their employees for nicotine. A nicotine test looks for cotinine in your blood, which is the predominant metabolite of nicotine. In addition, there are two types of nicotine tests: qualitative and quantitative test.
Reasons to take a Nicotine test
There are many reasons why a test to detect nicotine is requested. For example, a nicotine test is ordered for child custody cases, smoking cessation programs, insurance companies, before some types of surgery, to confirm or discard suspicions of a nicotine overdose or for employment.
When a nicotine test is ordered, there are two types of test:
Quantitative test: this test looks for nicotine concentrations in your body.
Qualitative test: it’s a blood test that looks for nicotine and cotinine in your blood.
What’s cotinine?
Cotinine is a metabolite of nicotine, which means that it forms after nicotine enters your body. A nicotine test usually looks for cotinine because it stays in your body for a longer time than nicotine.  Cotinine is found in both tobacco and nicotine replacement therapies. A urine or a blood test will show cotinine in blood.
How Long Does Nicotine Stay in Your System?
Nicotine has a short half-life (approximately 1 to 4 hours) while cotinine has a longer half-life (7 to 40 hours). In some occasions, other nicotine metabolites are tested such as anabasine. Anabasine, another tobacco metabolite, is present in tobacco but not in nicotine replacement products.
Normally, nicotine will leave your blood in 1 to 3 days while cotinine stays in your blood from 1 to 10 days.
There are other methods to detect cotinine. Generally, a saliva test is the most accurate to detect cotinine and it can be detected for up to 4 days.
Nicotine stays longer in people over 65 and in people who are regular smokers. Moreover, women usually process nicotine faster than men, especially if they are taking birth control pills.
A cigarette has on average about 12 mg of nicotine. Usually, about 1 mg of nicotine enter in our bloodstream.
Nicotine is measured in nanograms per milliliter (ng/ml). A nonsmoker has less than 1 ng/ml levels while a regular smoker has levels higher than 10ng/ml with some cases even higher than 500 ng/ml.
Why Test for Nicotine?
Nicotine testing for employment is the most common reason for a nicotine test. In many occasions, it’s because insurance companies have higher rates for people who are smokers. Therefore, many companies request nicotine tests for their employees.
Sometimes, these policies might sound unfair, but it depends if companies request a test for cotinine or for anabasine (the metabolite that it’s not present in nicotine replacement therapies).
Basically, as previously mentioned, there are four methods for testing nicotine and its metabolites:
Blood: it’s a common method, but more expensive than a saliva or a urine test. It’s very accurate. However, cotinine will leave your blood after 1 to 3 days.
Tumblr media
a blood test is a common test for nicotine.
Saliva: It is the most sensitive test of the three most common tests (urine, blood and saliva). In addition, it’s cheaper and easier to do as generally a swab is enough to take the sample.
Tumblr media
a saliva test is a very sensitive test for nicotine.
Urine: urine test is better to detect cotinine as it is found in higher concentrations in urine.
Tumblr media
Urine test is better to detect cotinine as it is found in higher concentrations in urine .
Hair: this is the most accurate test of all because cotinine can be found in hair for as long as three months. However, it’s much slower and more expensive than the other methods. Usually, it’s only used if tests are doubted or for medical or scientific studies.
Tumblr media
Hair test is the most accurate one. However, it takes more time and it’s more expensive.
Conclusion: How Long Does Nicotine Stay in Your System?
Usually, cotinine will be detected for about 1 to 4 days. It’s very uncommon that an employer or insurance company requests hair tests for nicotine (with this test nicotine can be detected for up to three months).
Sometimes, a nicotine test is required for other purposes, such as child custody cases or smoking cessation programs.
Furthermore, nicotine levels vary from person to person, age, sex or if the person is a nonsmoker or a regular smoker.
Nicotine testing for employment is not common. However, there are some companies that request nicotine testing for employment.
How long does nicotine stay in your system? Remember that usually it stays in your system for approximately 1 to 4 days and sometimes a bit longer.
