Okay sorry I'm still thinking about Them so stuffy boring Berenger who, yes, is a partner in one of the most prestigious law firms in the country, but also has never so much as cracked a smile at work and every one thinks he just goes home and eats saltines and powers down like a robot at night until his husband shows up. Ancel with his flowing firey hair and designer clothes and the fucking Emerald collar around his throat and he's all smiles and charm and everyone cannot figure out who this gorgeous man belongs to that is bringing his husband his forgotten lunch. And fucking BERENGER steps out of his office and Ancel practically runs over to him and their kiss is not subtle and Berenger actually blushes and smiles and Ancel whispers something in his ear that makes him laugh and you could knock every single person in that office over with a feather.

It doesn't occur to anyone until much later that Berenger always orders out for lunch.

Step 1 in Ancel's grand plan to show everyone how great his husband is was a total success.

Day 27 - Berencel

Berenger rubs a hand over his face. The harvest festival attendees swirled around him. Sounds of chatter and laughter. Instruments make raucous music, voices lift in song. As Lord of the land, he feels obligated to attend, but it’s exhausting.

While the sun hovers on the horizon, the moon has not yet risen and he makes his way as unobtrusively as possible to the fringes of the crowd. The sounds change, furtive sighs and groans in the shadows. Sultry in the gloaming light.

Harsh laughter and taunts carry on the breeze, draw him from his reverie. A sound like the crackle and pop of flames on green wood. Berenger shifts direction, stops just past the tree line, a frown creases his brow as he tries to sort out what he sees.

Men surround a small bonfire, a clinking of iron followed by the hiss and snap. No. Not a bonfire. There is a figure in the flames, an iron band around its neck and one wrist - also the source of the angry noises.

An ember-fae.

“What are you doing?” Berenger shoves his way furiously through the men that ring the creature. He can see green eyes, speckled skin as the enchanted flame shrinks from the cold iron.

He manages to slip the shackle and collar off before the group recovers from the surprise of his arrival. But with his attention on the task, he fails to see two men surge forward, outrage writ large on their faces, clubs raised.

No sooner than the iron clinks to the ground, a surge of warmth, protection, swirls around Berenger and the men fall back
