I have thought so since I finished reading Dark Heir but my recent reread has really solidified my theory about the collar forcing James to act not according to Will's desires, but his own.

I think it would have satisfied Sarcean more not to have complete control over James by force but rather to envision a collar that would force James to act on his own desires rather than his moral codes or what his duties to the Sun King demanded.

We see very little of Sarcean himself in this book but my basis for claiming that this would have pleased him more is very simple: because Sarcean is Will and we know Will.

Yes, he is possessive and jealous, but choice is very important to Will. The difference between someone following him willingly or not is massive to him. He agonizes over the possibility of James only wanting him because of their proximity to the collar, we see the elation when he thinks James has accepted him for who he is, he even boasts in his head about how he managed to have his friends follow him willingly.

So, returning to the past. Because Anharion desired and loved Sarcean, the collar compelled him to fight by his side, even though he found that morally reprehensible and it eroded his reputation.

And I think when we get flashbacks to the past we will see this dynamic of love/hate play out between the two of them. Anharion loves Sarcean, which makes the collar compel him to do his bidding, and he hates Sarcean because he has forced him to act against his values and better judgement.

Sarcean is satisfied, or as satisfied as he can be in this past life, because every move Anharion makes to protect him is born of a genuine (if buried and repressed) desire to do so. In this way, without having true allies or equals, and without truly having Anharion (as his loyalty and his support are not given freely), at least he has this tangible evidence that what Anharion and he felt for each other was real, and still is.

While seeing Anharion compelled by the collar would please him, it would also cause him to be resentful and sadistic towards Anharion. After all, what Sarcean wants (as Will wants) is something freely given. We even hear James say it in the end of Dark Heir, when he tells Will/Sarcean what he wants to hear, saying "I will rule with you, by your side", not "I will be ruled by you", or anything else. Sarcean wants to "possess" Anharion as much as he wants Anharion to desire and concede this possession.

So, let's get into James' POV at the end of Dark Heir and how this fits into my theory. James has no love/hate relationship to Will in the current time. Will has been fiercely loyal and protective of him. Smart, charming, assuring. A great leader. So when we get his perspective, it makes sense to me that it be pretty straightforward, devoid of the intense love/hate contrast that Anharion/Sarcean had in the past.

I feel like his point of view has made some believe the collar controls his opinion of Will/Sarcean completely, but I don't believe that is the case. James likes Will so much he asked him to collar him! I think the collar, in present day, is compelling James to act on Will's behalf, yes, but beyond James' actions, I think his inner dialogue is actually his own. And I can't wait to see how it contrasts with how Anharion felt.

I made a little captive prince dustjacket for myself hehe ✨️

I was a little frustrated that I couldn't get the polish captive prince special editions 😔 (And the new US covers weren’t out yet, but I will definetly get those now!!)

So I went: 'Fine. I'll do it myself."

I don't know what got into me, but I started to add more and more to this and it ended up taking me 60 hrs 💀

Still not satisfied with everything (especially the font and frame) but it's ok, maybe I'll come back to that a little later ✨️

!Not everything is super accurate since it has been some time since I read the books and I (again 😭) didn't have them with me, while working on this!

sorry i'm still just so hung up on the fact that captive prince is portrayed by the general public as a series that glorifies slavery and sexual assault (aka the pinnacle of no consent) when in actuality the core theme is that the most important thing you can give someone else is their freedom and their agency and their ability to consent. like even though laurent has all this power over damen at the start of the series, even though he abuses that power a handful of times, ultimately those two spend the entire series figuring out how to best serve the other in order to overcome the violence that was done to and by each of them - not because they're in a master/slave relationship, but simply because they care about the other person and they know that neither of them was allowed the consent they deserved in previous relationships and situations!!! and at the end of all of it, they accept not only that they have been hurt by lack of consent but they acknowledge that they have been abusers in their own ways, perpetuating a system that is harmful and cruel, and when they join together to create a new kingdom they make a point to put an end to the slavery that brought them together in the first place!!!!!!! what the fuck!!!!
