Step 1: Establish Context

At the very least, ask yourself who’s writing this story, why they would want to write this, and what kind of relationships does this writer need to maintain.

We’ll start with this story, hot-off-the-press from CNN’s Pentagon correspondent Barbara Starr.

First tip-off - She’s a pentagon correspondent for a multi-million-dollar media outlet. No one in America is going to pay her expensive bills or produce her expensive work without first making sure they’re not sinking hundreds of thousands of dollars into an enemy.

Further, the kinds of relationships she needs to keep in the Pentagon will automatically compromise her, since there will be other reporters vying for access to get The First and Last Word on a story and if you piss them off, someone else will get The Scoop. I’ve had it happen to me at the local level where local police just refused to answer my calls and emails. I’d imagine at the national correspondent level, the same applies.

Other important factors are, “why now”, but let’s pretend you know nothing about any of this, so let’s learn more about Barbara Starr.

Step 2: Learn about the Author

Where is she from? Who’s invested in her professional development? Who are her patrons? This is where the bourgeoisie loves to tell on itself. They love validation, accolades, and honors; whether it’s to establish Expertise or to signal to others that this person has clout, they can pull strings. If you’re an up-and-coming journalist, this is someone who can take you under their wing for patronage. If you’re wealthy/powerful, you want reassurance that this is someone you can trust to relay your perspective surreptitiously.

So what does her bio say about her?

Ok, so she got a fancy award for her work in “journalism” from something called The Panetta Institute. For those of you in the know, this will ring a bell and raise millions of red flags.

 but if you don’t know what that means, that’s fine. You can just ask yourself this based on the rest of her work and what you know just from scanning her bio for a few seconds: Would the Pentagon ever allow a journalist to embed herself with US troops without something in it for them? Absolutely not. But let’s go further. Just one more step.

Step 3. Who are their patrons?

Just who is the Panetta institute?

Founded by Leon Panetta. Ok. Who’s that?

Oh, he was former CIA director, former chief of staff for Bill Clinton, it goes on lmao. Isn’t that interesting? And she’s pushing secret intel proving that one of America’s targets committed a crime that of course must be met with decisive action?

This is the international relations version of a cop placing crack or a gun on a suspect to justify its butchery.
