This project was started as a "2 week" project the day of the original UV being cancelled announcement though as with most things I went a little overboard. Oops hehe. But I'm glad I did.

There of course has since been an update on the situation (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OC9Ob7pHUlA ); but never the less I was still determined to finish, especially when a lot of what was said in the update video was also brought up in the animation!

Thanks for being a wonderful inspiration Jakei! Whatever you do choose to do next, I'll be here to support it! Just take care of yourself and keep doing what you enjoy.

Everything in this was hand animated in blender, no mo-cap or phys engines, and since there are so many wips of everything from start to end, I'll probably be posting them here and there and right up a mini thing about it all on my site eventually! :D (like the time-lapse of 3 hours of animating hair physics condensed down into 2 mins o-o )

After 2 months straight of animation I'm happy it's finally done ^o^ Sorry it took so long to come out (to those that knew in the spaces I hangout in), especially since I paused all my other projects to put this on top priority! I'll be getting back to avi making soon after a er… A well needed break o-0 May be streaming a bit the next couple days when I do!

Coloring Process

A while back, @savvylittleminx told me she was interested in my coloring technique when I asked what people would want me to talk about if I were to do a voice-over speed-paint. 

Unfortunately, this computer is a relic and before I can do any such things like streaming and speed painting vids, I first have to buy a new one. So I went ahead and did a quick little doodle that can allow me to demonstrate some of my method.

Here’s the pic I worked on:

Process under the cut for dashboard cleanliness.

This is the clean linework base I started on. Since I was planning on putting a step by step picture for this piece, I went ahead and slapped my signature on at the very beginning, which I normally don’t do until; the very end. canvas size was 600 x 600 pixels for this piece. (Really pretty small... in the grand scheme of things). The heavy outline of the entire circle is at 5 pixels. The inside detailing of the pokeball itself is 3 pixels, and the Zapdos logo for Team Instinct is outlined with 1 lonely pixel.

Step 1: Create a new layer under the line work layer. Scribble in the color on a low opacity setting. This is somewhere between 50-60% and allows me to see what I am doing when I begin erasing. 

Erase all the excess and increase opacity back up to 100%. Then, I create a new layer for my next color. Wash, rinse, repeat for as many “base colors” as I am going to have. On involved pieces, I can spend one day alone doing this nonsense. XD

Yellow done. Onto the light grey (white, but pure white is obnoxious). 

Note: I forgot that Zapdos has a black beak in the logo. I had to go back and add that in as I was working on my yellow layer. That’s why his beak is black here but not on the original black layer two pics up from here. I did it on the black layer, but I wasn’t going back to take another screen shot because I’m lazy. 

It is hard as shit to tell I did anything here because I resized these pictures down to 150 pixels, but if you look close enough, you can see the faint discoloration of the grey and white boxes behind the pokeball that indicates a transparent background. 

Not even gonna lie, for this one, I literally just used the paint bucket to fill in the grey area. Normally I don’t, but I knew I was going to slap in a gradient layer so I just needed something in place so it wasn’t transparent anymore. 

Side note: I usually don’t work on a transparent background and I have absolutely. No. Idea. why I did it with this piece. Clearly, I have cracked. 

Step 2: Speaking of slapping in a gradient, here it is. I put it in on a darken layer so it gave some shadow to the sphere. I should have done a little more shading on the bottom-right area.... but I forgot. It is what it is. *shrug*

After that, I erased the extra gradient so it only remained on the pokeball. 

Step 3: Added a sliver of light on the top-left area. I did that by painting in a small section of white on an overlay layer to make it look like there is a nice glossy surface on the pokeball. 

Step 4: Add in the background. For this, it was a two-part-er. I put on a gradient with the red to blue over the whole 600 x 600 background. Firealpaca only allows a left to right gradient so I had to transform the layer, rotating it to be on the diagonal and then expanding it all so it fit the full 600 sq. pixel canvas. 

I cut the opacity down to 50-60%... somewhere around there. Then I expanded the canvas to 610 x 610 to give a little bit of a nice, squared border and painted the whole background black. 

After that, I went ahead and expanded the canvas size by another 10 pixels that I left transparent. Save as a transparent PNG file and call it a day. 

Voila, finished work (again):

Note: What I usually do is draw on a light gray canvas to start, do the full paint up, and then increase that canvas size by 10 pixels. Only once I’ve increased the canvas size do I usually turn on the transparent background. 

But that little border of transparency acts a little bit like a lock when you upload onto Tumblr. Sometimes Tumblr skews artwork and it seems that making a small border of transparent pixels allows Tumblr to post the art as you meant it to look instead of running the risk of a 50/50 chance of it looking right.

 Here are the finished CG figures of the three main characters in my original kaiju project, Rekira the Super-Monster! I'm very excited to share them. Character portraits assembled in FireAlpaca.

You know, the more I think about it, with the "cartoon" look I was going for, these characters look like Rankin-Bass Animagic-style characters (which were crafted/animated in Japan)! Except that the subject matter is a bit more serious (although there will be, er... humor). ;)

Firstly, yes I am about 2 days late to the party (that’s not fair, i’ve been checking your blog every day since September started coz I can’t remember your exact date until 18th came and stuff happened and a K-Pop group made a comeback and I had no time to check kvjdnsc) and yeah this seems pretty crap too cOZ WHOOPS!!!!! Alternately titled my failed April Fool's Day thing, but y'know. XD I was originally going to post this on the 1st with a cool-looking 7-7-17 on it, but my inevitable combination of lethargy and procrastination got in the way. Again. Whee. Oh well, it's posted now, so...yeah. I still don't know what's up with me lately, but I'm trying not to post depressing statuses or journals, I did that enough on my original account and I don't want or need that kind of negativity clogging up my feed. UGH. So from left to right we have Solitare, Oriata, Minnoli, and the still-unnamed Mushroom Baby/Kid. I swear, this kid's giving me SO much hell, I've spent literally hours trying to find the right name for him, but no luck yet. I'm driving myself crazy(er) trying to find the one that fits him. na een lange tijd een update        12-6-2018

De afgelopen weken ben ik mijn totale blog vergeten. Hier bij een update van wat ik de afgelopen weken heb gemaakt.

Er waren een aantal vrije dagen en een vakantie dus extreem veel heb ik nou ook weer niet gedaan. Ik heb aan mijn achtergronden gewerkt en een aantal proef animaties.

Waar ik nu wel tegen aan loop is dat ik bang ben dat ik het niet ga redden er moet nog zo veel gebeuren en ik probeer een aantal nieuwe programma’s uit waardoor het nog langer gaat duren. Ik denk een programma gevonden te hebben wat ik persoonlijk fijn vind werken genaamd FireAlpaca. in dit programma heb ik wat test animaties frame bij frame gemaakt en dat ging wel oké. ik heb tips van Linda gekregen om nog meer drama te maken en referentie materiaal te maken zodat ik makkelijker kan over tekenen en mijn animatie makkelijker kan maken.

Ik hoop dat het gaat zoals ik wil en ik de aankomende lessen meer kan animeren.

1. Eintrag - Form des Projekts

Heute fand das erste Gespräch mit Frau Büchli statt. Wir haben uns zunächst darüber ausgetauscht, was soweit meine Projektidee ist.

Momentan stand ich soweit, dass ich wusste, dass ich einen 2D animierten Kurzfilm machen wollte. Das heisst, ich wollte ein kurzes Video zeichnen, animieren und eigen komponierte Filmmusik hinzufügen.

Zum Inhalt: Dies betrifft die Form des Animationsfilmes. Soll es ein abstrakter Film werden oder doch eher weniger? In was für einem Styl soll es sein, um was geht es?

Ich möchte auf jeden Fall mit dem Film eine Geschichte erzählen, Interaktionen, sehr wahrscheinlich zwischen Personen, wie bei einem Spielfilm, einfach nicht so lang. Frau Büchi hat mir als Beispiel eine halbabstrakte Animation gezeigt und mir empfohlen, mir in der Mediothek weitere Kurzanimationen anzusehen.

Für die Geschichte selbst schwirrten mir einige Ideen im Kopf:

Ich höre oft Songs von der K-Pop Gruppe BTS. In K-Pop ist man jedoch bei den Songs selber noch nicht fertig; die Musikvideos werden oft sehr aufwendig gestaltet, scheinen zunächst etwas komisch oder abstrakt zu sein und es findet sich meistens eine "theory" dahinter: die Videos haben eine "versteckte" Bedeutung. Tiefgründige Probleme wie z.B. das Vergessen der eigenen Persönlichkeit durch Erwartungen der Gesellschaft oder dass Frauen oft objektiv "verkauft" werden z.B. in der Musikbranche, aber auch an andern Orten, wird aufgefasst und symbolisch im Musikvideo verankert. Seit ich letzthin die theory über die Musikvideos der letzten Alben von BTS erfahren habe, möchte ich selbst einen tieferen Sinn, denn man erst auf den zweiten Blick bemerkt, in meinen Animationsfilm bringen.

Zum Zeichnen: Mein Bruder hat ein Graphic Tablet von Huion, das man am PC anhängen kann und so z.B. auf Paint Bilder zeichnen kann (die Qualität der Zeichnung ist um einiges besser als mit der Maus gemacht und professioneller). Animationsprogramme, die ich bisher benutzt habe, sind FireAlpaca und PaintTool SAI, wobei ich mich für die Maturaarbeit sehr wahrscheinlich für FireAlpaca entscheiden werde, da ich dort mehr Erfahrung mit mir bringe. Um eine Animation zu zeichnen, zeichnet man Bild für Bild, also frame by frame, lässt sie nach einander abspielen und je nach dem wie viele frames per second (fp/s) man wählt und wie die Bilder gezeichnet sind, kann eine Bewegung schneller oder langsamer, flüssiger oder staksiger sein.

Da ich seit drei Jahren keinen Zeichnungsunterricht mehr hatte und ich auch in meiner Freizeit nicht allzuviel gezeichnet hatte, gibt sich dies als ein Problempunkt, den man beachten sollte. Ich habe wieder angefange zu zeichnen und gemerkt, dass ich erstaunlich schnell hinein finde und schneller kleine Fortschritte mache, als gedacht, was die "Ästetik" der Zeichnungen angeht (ich kann umsetzen, was ich mir vorgestellt habe z.B. wenn ich ein Gesicht zeichne kann man sagen, dass es gelungen ist - natürlich trotzdem mit Verbesserungspotential). Ein weiteres Problem ist, dass ich mich momentan viel noch an anderen Zeichnngsstylen orientiere, was verständlich ist um sich wieder einzufinden. Mit der Zeit jedoch sollte ich meinen eigenen Styl finden. Zurzeit neigt sich mein Zeichnungsstyl sehr an "realistischem" Manga (z.B. nicht Chibi für dieses Projekt und eher mit realen Proportionen), da es mich mehr anspricht als viele Westernstyles.

Unter anderem muss ich sicher üben, schnell zu zeichnen: es soll schnell gehen, vielleicht skizzenartig zwar, aber schlussendlich klar erkennbar was dargestellt wird. Zurzeit bin ich immer noch versucht, genau und langsam zu zeichnen.

Zur Musik: Ich habe zwar das Schwerpunktfach Musik, möchte bei der Maturaarbeit den Fokus jedoch auf die Animation und das Zeichnen richten. Es soll vorallem um den Film gehen; die Musik soll im Hintergrund vorhanden sein als Filmmusik und dem Film Stimmung verleihen, jedoch nicht die völlige aufmerksamkeit auf sich richten. Letztes Jahr habe ich beim Young Composers Project teilgenommen und ein etwa fünfeinhalb Minute langes Stück komponiert, das im Stil schon an Filmmusik anlehnt indem Sinn, dass man schon beim Zuhören merkt, dass er mehr ein Stück ist, das Stimmung verleiht statt den Zuhörer zum aufmerksamen zuhören auffordert.

In dem Sinn plane ich, die Musik ein Teil vom Projekt zu machen, mich aber nicht zu sehr auf sie zu fokusieren.

Momentan schien es noch, dass ich mir der Form des Filmes noch nicht ganz klar war. Ich hatte viele einzelne Ideen, die ich jedoch noch zu keiner ganzen führen konnten für die Animation. Für das nächste Treffen sollte ich mich deshalb noch mehr mit den Arten der Animationsfilme auseinander setzten und meiner Idee mehr Struktur verleihen.
