It's not even the goody two-shoes characters that I don't like... I mean, they're generally not very believable, but hey--if their environment shapes them to be like that, then I'm kind of on board. I do love me some happy, shiny sheeple 🐑 But generally that's not the protagonist, that's secondary characters.

For me, it's more about someone coming in from the outside, armed with their "superior knowledge," and suddenly they're just kicking ass at every turn. Why do you think this one character is going to do what dozens, potentially hundreds, couldn't? Especially when that group has all that brain-power combined? Oh, your character has military training? A background in science? Does no one else? Why the hell are you so special? You say it's for the sake of the narrative? Then get a better narrative!

Again, for me, it boils down to my preference for setting over plot. I love a good world/environment that I can sink myself into, feel like I'm living there, explore it as local... I studied anthropology, I LIVE for ethnographies, and, more than anything, I'm a writer before I'm a gamer, so, although I write fanfic 98% exclusively about video-games, the tired narrative of "Go In, Fix The Things, Be a Big, Damn Hero" is just something I am SO over. I get it from a technical POV, but I don't care about the technical shit when it encroaches on the narrative. Like, for Resident Evil Village, I understand why lycans, soldats, and the vampire chicks (moro-whats-its) are coded as being very specific sexes, but also it angers me >:[ grrrr

Goody two-shoes protags usually do suck, though. It's not really their fault, to be fair -- another thing about the Chosen One trope is that it very much shoe-horns a lot of protags into having to be extremely similar, because they have That One Job: to fix things. Sure, they can do it badly, or begrudgingly, but they're still doing the same thing over and over and over and over and over again. Their story is always the same. It has to be.
