For the first time in my entire life, google maps has told me that it would be faster to travel via public transit than go by car. This is nothing short of utopian miracle

Overanalyzing the setting of Octo Expansion: a thread
This is something I thought I’d do in public, since people might actually be interested about it. We’re mostly analyzing surroundings here.  While snooping around Inkopolis Square and the subway entrance, I noticed that there are Kamabo Co. flyers on the ground, as well as a CQ-80 remote and one of those ID cards with C.Q. Cumber on it. (I did not take a picture of these, but go see for yourself) What this means for the company itself... no idea, but these are here even before you’ve cleared Octo Expansion. That initially leads me to believe that other test subjects have gotten out this way... except that makes little to no sense considering the only way to actually get out is to break the system and escape, and even then, you’ll find yourself in the middle of the ocean.  It might be safe to assume that these are objects left by the agents themselves after they get back to the surface, which would put Octo Expansion to take place some time before the Splatoon 2 hero mode... how much this makes sense is beyond me at the moment. Moving on:
Tumblr media
Looking at the interior of the Deepsea Metro, I wanted to figure out whether this really is a metro of solely the Kamabo Co. facility that we still know stupidly little of. How it functions exactly is beyond me, and there might be better information out there, but from all the flyers, posters and equipment around it is obvious that it is a proper facility, somehow. Where it receives funding and materials from, aside from possible human-era leftovers? Beyond me, lol.
Tumblr media
(Notice the police tape on the left. What does that mean? Did someone finally start to investigate why there are dozens of weird test chamber stops among the normal commuting routes of deep-sea citizens?)
Tumblr media
There is also police tape on the metro itself.) The active timetables showing countdowns of different metro lines more or less prove that this is a mode of public transport, which raises a ton of new questions. If the metro was exclusive to the facility, timetables would probably be useless, as test subjects would be taken to their destinations as they wish (which is also how it works in the game, but we can jot that down to game logic). So this is when I started to wonder exactly how the Metro system works. It is safe to assume that Kamabo Co. is affiliated with the Deepsea Metro, considering C.Q Cumber being the conductor, but also a guide of the facility. Additionally, when Kamabo Co. is shut down at the end of the story, the Deepsea Metro keeps going, implying that it is generally its own thing. Of course, C.Q Cumber could also simply be a guide, not a real conductor, but this is a discussion for another time.
Tumblr media
This screenshot is where things start getting interesting. This is the background from the central station, and these are details that we all see in the background, but don’t necessarily pay closert attention to. We can see a sign that reads “Welcome to Deep Sea” on the left, though I’m not sure whether that is Inklish or something else.
What REALLY caught my eye in the picture is the kiosk. Generally, most of the text in the Deep Sea is written in Inkling letters, and presumably the in Inklish. The existence of the kiosk is strange enough: if we weren’t totally sold already, there wouldn’t be a kiosk if there were no passengers here. However, more importantly, the kiosk sign appears to be in Octarian language, unlike all of the other text.
I think it’s the true identity of the Deep Sea is generally unknown. Is this its own country? Is this an extension of Inkopolis? Is this perhaps an extension of the Octarian empire? Judging from most of the text, the latter is not very likely.
At this point, there are more questions in my mind than there probably EXIST answers. Let’s go back to the start of the game and see if we can make a connection.
Tumblr media
This is the station that you start the game at. I’m assuming that this is a subway, judging from the gates and the timetables. VERY curiously, we can see Octarian band posters on the wall...
Tumblr media
We can see a map of the assumed Inkopolis Metro (or possibly a train) as well as what I assume are machines for purchasing tickets
Tumblr media
The station is... not very grand. It is initially quite high up and you can’t really see the whole thing, so I can’t tell whether this is a subway or a railway station. In my experience, though, subway stations tend to be more down-to-earth and railways are typically very distinctly outdoors. I wish there was more imagery or signs here!
From what we can see, I have to assume this is NOT connected to the Deep Sea Metro. This contradicts Iso Padre’s talk about the metro being “on a long and winding path to Inkopolis Station”, but we don’t really know if that is supposed to be taken literally... Let’s go back to the very start of Octo Expansion for some further reference.
Tumblr media
We can see what is assumably an employee door, and a ticket machine.
Tumblr media
This is what’s interesting: we can see a table of some sort with the name of the location as well as a big list of contents and icons. I have no idea what this is about. It reminds me of something you’d see at a mall... this might be the lobby of the Kamabo Co. facility as there are flyers present, but you can’t see the logo anywhere.
Tumblr media
There is a big entrance leading to a staircase right behind where we start our adventure. It really makes me wonder why the hell Agent 8 picked the second option out of a decision between “a comparatively clean and proper-looking entrance” and “abandoned metro track”.
My best guess is that the stairs behind the entrance lead to the facility, but there isn’t much I can say on that.
Tumblr media
We can see a vending machine as well as some kind of out-of-order...place. I can’t tell whether this is a kiosk, or what.
Tumblr media
However, there is an actual kiosk here, and it is another one with Octarian font! This is of the same kind as the one we see back at the central station, but this is seemingly closed. This is nowhere near the last nod to Octarians in this specific part of the story - the starting area has by far the most from what I can spot.
(Also, curiously, there are umbrellas sold here. I don’t get why they would sell umbrellas underground, so... does this connect to the surface?)
Tumblr media
There is much to see at this station specifically. We can see a waiting area for passengers, some signs, a little hut for a guard and a clock. There are also gates here.
Tumblr media
We can get a good look at the metro gates here. Most of them are out of order, but we can still see that they work with some kind of scanning system.
Tumblr media
This is where we get back to the Octarian lore: The trash can has a figure of an Octopus using it. But THAT’S NOT ALL!
Tumblr media
Even the waiting seats are octopus-colored AND -shaped. We can also note that while a lot of the doors around the metro are very big, everything here is built to Octoling scale. This much Octoling imagery leads me to believe that the Deep Sea, and with that the Metro, connects to Octarian domes. Realistically, where would 10,008 (presumably all Octolings) test subjects have found their way to the metro from if there was no link from the Octo hub itself? Of course we could say Tartar individually kidnapped every single one, but still....
Tumblr media
Moving on to the out-of-use subway car, we can see a still of the screen text that is shown on the ones in use as well. I can’t tell if this is identical to the Inkopolis station text. Looking at this, I have to say that it seems KIND OF likely for Inkopolis to connect to the metro, considering there is a squid-culture magazine in here. It is also stated in the game that “deep-sea denizens” aren’t allowed on the surface, so it’d be kind of weird if the metro DID lead there, however this was something Tartar says (I think) so it might be a lie for all we know.
Tumblr media
After going through the subway car and into the tunnels, we get past this curve in the tunnel. We can immediately tell we are in Kamabo Co. territory, and from what I can tell, this is a storage area of sorts. Boxes are scattered all around, there is medical equipment ...
Tumblr media
We can confirm that this is a Kamabo.co storage area by the numerous Kamabo symbols thrown around. (There is also a kelp pool in the floor for some reason.) This brings me back to wondering how Kamabo Co. manages to be as large a company as it is, even if it is supposedly based on human-era remains. You’d assume 12,000 year-old medical equipment doesn’t work too well. Well, that’s enough thinking over this thing. Let me know if you guys got some thoughts from looking at the post. I might do a second part with the Octo Expansion escape sequence for extras at some point. Thanks for looking at my essay.

ONE DAY IN TORONTO ITINERARY – TOP THINGS TO DO IN TORONTO
Tumblr media
BEST TIME TO VISIT TORONTO
Toronto can be an all year round destination. From Christmas markets in the winter to one of the world’s biggest Pride parades in the summer. However, winter temperatures can drop  to  -30. On the contrary, summers go up to 50 degrees! The best time to go is in September and October when the city puts on it’s colourful fall coat but still sits in the 20 degree weather sweet spot or April and May – when you can catch the cherry blossom season and the city takes on a pink aura! Fall and spring allow you to sightsee while the city is still not overcrowded with tourists, traffic and extreme weather conditions.
A FEW FACTS ABOUT TORONTO
Toronto is Canada’s most populated city with 25 % of the entire country’s population settling in or around the city. You will find over 8000 restaurants with more opening daily, making Toronto to be every foodie’s dream destination. If you consider yourself a food lover, Food and Sightseeing tour is exactly what you should look for by coming to this marvelous city!
Toronto holds the Guinness world record for the longest street in the world, Yonge Street, that stretches for 1896 km!
The city is also known as an “artist mecca”, with over 20 000 artists residing in it as well as 25% of all Hollywood movies filmed in it. Toronto’s film industry brings in approx. 1.5B USD each year.
TOP THINGS TO DO IN TORONTO
With so many restaurants, museums, sights and sounds it can be overwhelming to try and see everything. Follow this guide and you’ll get the best of Toronto in one day!
Start your day at Union Station
Pearson airport express train will take you straight to Toronto’s busiest subway station – Union. This station has around 300,000 people passing on a standard business day and it’s the perfect start to experience the vibrant lifestyle of the city.
Have breakfast at St. Lawrence Market
A short 10 min walk on Front Street will take you to the St. Lawrence Market, named World’s Best Food Market by National Geographic in 2012.
With over 100 vendors, you can find anything from traditional Jewish “bagels” to Ukrainian perogies, local cheeses, or the Canadian peameal bacon sandwich. After you have breakfast have a coffee or a drink in the Great Hall and complete your visit with a walking tour to hear about the Markets 200-year-old history.
Explore the Distillery District
Continue walking on Front Street for 15 minutes and reach the historical Distillery District. The area is the best-preserved collection of Victorian Architecture in North America. It is the home to over 40 heritage buildings and courtyards, boutiques and artisan shops and a popular walking destination. You can shop, eat, explore or wake up your inner photographer here and meet people from all over the world.
Live on The Edge on CN Tower
Take the bus on Front Street or walk up to King Street and take the 504 streetcar that will get you near the CN (Canadian National) tower, before the night crowds. Built in 1976 as a satellite tower, it held the record for the World’s Tallest Building and Freestanding Structure until 2007.
You can choose to take the glass elevator to the observation deck, lie down on the glass floor or test your limits and walk outside on the towers edge around the circumference of the roof! The first of its kind in North America, The Edge Walk makes for a once-in-a-lifetime thrilling experience!
Have lunch in Kensington Market
Hop on the Spadina Streetcar that will take you through the hectic Chinatown all the way to Toronto’s most vibrant neighborhood – Kensington Market. It’s a bohemian neighbourhood populated with artists and packed with affordable cafes and restaurants. Since Canada’s Marijuana legalisation in 2018, you can find a variety of dispensaries and indulge in the local past time before choosing one of the restaurants. You can find Chinese, Portuguese or Colombian cuisine here. Looking to try something different? Try Rasta Pasta – a Jamaican Italian fusion!
Check out Queen Street West
Voted one of the coolest neighbourhoods by Vogue magazine and just a 5 min walk down from Kensington is the trendy Queen Street. The street stretches throughout the city but walk east from Bathurst Street and check out the cool shops like The Condom Shack or have a photo session in the Graffiti Alley. You can shop on the local “TSOQ” (The Store On Queen) for a fresh new look or have a drink at “Bowine Sex Club” (not an actual sex club) – the alternative live music haven downstairs and a relaxing tiki rooftop patio upstairs!
Shop at Eaton Centre and Bloor Street
Take the 501 East to Queen and Yonge and explore the largest Toronto mall on the longest street in the world. You can find clothes, shoes, jewelry at all price ranges here but if you want to indulge in some luxury shopping take the Yonge street and walk over Yonge-Dundas square for some street entertainment all the way up to Bloor Street and check out the stores like Holt Renfrew, Davids, Tiffany, Prada, Louis Vuitton, and Hermes for some luxury items.
Watch the sunset at the Harbourfront
Use your last hours to treat all your senses. Hop on the Yonge-University subway back to Union station and walk down to Harbourfront. It is the lakefront neighbourhood overlooking Toronto Islands and Lake Ontario. The views are spectacular and the air is fresh! You can try a local craft beer at Amsterdam Brewery, have a nice dinner or just hang out at Sugar Beach – an urban park beach with live music and festivals. Interested in a planned tour? Try one of the many boat tours. For an added romantic touch take the sunset cruise!
Party in the Fashion District
Still have time left? Take the 510 streetcar up to Fashion District and enjoy a night out. The name derives from the early 20th century when the area was a textile centre. Today, the old factories and warehouses house a variety of clubs and bars. Want to laugh the night away? Try Second City – a comedy club that gave the world comedians like Mike Myers and Martin Short. Feeling like a drink with a twist? Have one at SpiN nightclub – a martini bar with ping pong tables. Still not enough? Walk out on King St W and just close your eyes, wherever you point you will find a lounge, bar or club to go to!

Tokyo, part 3
Today is our last full day in Tokyo. The trip has felt really long, probably because we squeezed in so many things, but also it's hard to believe it's almost over.
We got up early to try and make the most of our remaining hours here, starting with a trip on the subway during rush hour.  We weren't on the most crowded trains, but the trains are definitely packed and there are staff on the platforms lining everyone up for efficient boarding and alighting when the trains arrive. There were also the designated women's only cars that I've heard about, with several exceptions (primary school boys, men helping disabled women, etc.). It was right next to the car we were in and even though it was just after rush hour, there were several women keeping to the all-women car of the train we were on. Those cars are in effect during morning rush hours and after 11/11:30 until the train stops running for the night.
Another thing we noticed on the way to the station was a crowd of people smoking by a cigarette garbage area - apparently it's illegal to smoke while walking down the street - something you don't notice until you know to look for it - so everyone has to smoke in designated areas. Kind of a nice thing.
We went to check out the fish market, which has moved recently from a more central location in Tokyo to more of the outskirts - to provide space for buildings associated with the Olympics coming next year. Apparently the original fish market was more what I was expecting - a crazed, interactive market that you could walk through. The new market is much more sterile and visitors are only allowed to see the market through tiny windows on the floor above, so it was a bit of a letdown - but the place is huge, so kind of cool to see just the scale of it.
Not far from the fish and produce markets was the TeamLab light experience show - which was, unlike the fish market, was totally interactive. Almost to the point of insanity. It was in an enormous warehouse, and in complete darkness except for the LED light displays in every room, on the ceiling, and on the floor. There was electronic music playing non stop in the entire space. There was no map, no guide, just people everywhere walking around and finding secret rooms with amazing displays. We were there for about 3 hours and managed to see almost everything, minus the lantern display which had an hour wait. If I were to take drugs, this would be a good place to use them, but maybe almost better just to get the experience in an uninfluenced state. It was definitely an amazing display of music, lights, and technology, and I highly recommend it - just eat before you go. We were shells of human beings by the end.
So much that we went to a nearby outlet mall and inhaled Indian food at the food court. Not our best moment. But the food was critical (and actually, pretty delicious).
Rejuvenated, we took the train to Akihabara, a neighborhood famous for electronics. We checked out the Yodobashi Akiba, the craziest electronics store I've ever seen - an entire city block and 9 floors of shopping. Like B&H but on a serious amount of crack. We checked out a few things but the prices weren't amazing so just walked around in awe of the size of this place-  which is down the  block from a similar store of similar scale. I have no idea how people do so much shopping here.
Then we walked around and found the Super Potato video game store with three floors of all the original gameboys, nintendo, sega, etc. video game systems and actual games. Serious nerd alert was on code red here, but pretty cool to see people getting excited about all this stuff from our childhood.
We took the train to Ueno, yet another neighborhood, and yet another with just street after street of shops. It's really overwhelming how much shopping there is here. We stopped to try and get into a bar and experienced some pretty weird behavior -the bartender basically said were were not allowed in and closed the door behind us. Some places are weird here about foreigners. We found another bar near the train station that worked out and enjoyed sitting for an hour, documenting all the places we've been, stayed at, and eaten at. It was a good recap of the trip, which has been a whirlwind.
Our last stop for the day was at Tokyo Station where we met up with Richard and Nao, two friends of my cycling friend, Scott. We ate at a vegan ramen place in the train station, which was actually quite good.  Although it would have been nice to meet these guys at the start of our trip so we could learn things before we explored, it was nice to ask them the questions we have accumulated over the last two weeks and find out more about Japanese culture. Things like:
people work a lot, but since many jobs are guaranteed for life, essentially, they might not work very hard. they are trying to change this culture (sounds like the food coop).
having KFC on Christmas is a really big deal
Women buy men gifts on Valentine's Day
Factories and some offices have daily morning group calesthenics that are done in unison to music played on tape players (!)
people get 10 days of vacation, typically, but most don't even take the vacation that they are allotted. They often bring back gifts to share with the office less as a nice thing, and more as an apology for not being at work.
if they go out past the last train, they often just go to karaoke until the trains start running again because its cheaper to rent a room at a karaoke bar rather than pay for a taxi
We had a nice dinner and got some drinks afterwards, and then called it a night. Really nice guys and another good experience of meeting others while we're on this trip together.
Photos are saved here.

22 Best Family Hotels in Hong Kong From Luxury to Budget
Most of the finest household inns in Hong Kong lists you’ll learn are lacking a vital element. Many Hong Kong lodge insurance policies allow a most of three folks in a lodge room, no matter age, with a couple of exceptions talked about on this listing.
The room restrictions can typically trigger points, so I’ve provided suggestions for selecting rooms and reserving connecting rooms. I’ve additionally highlighted a couple of lodging you might not have thought-about which have enjoyable children’ facilities. These inns are in a wide range of value ranges and areas, together with close to the airport and Hong Kong Disneyland.
Hong Kong is a wonderful household trip vacation spot (sure, there are some challenges with touring there in the meanwhile however they are going to be overcome). It’s also possible to discuss with my Hong Kong journey information primarily based on our expertise from dwelling there (it’s the place my daughter was born) and frequent return visits.
Suggestions for Reserving Hong Kong Household Lodges
Earlier than you start making reservations, be mindful the coverage I discussed above. Due to this most three-people-to-a-room rule, oftentimes because of this households of 4, who’re used to staying in a single room, often need to ebook two rooms or discover a uncommon household quad room. Because the employees to visitor ratio in these inns is often larger than in most elements of the world, I might advise not bending this rule.
As a substitute, ebook household rooms or assured connecting rooms as quickly as doable. These rooms, as you may think, are in excessive demand. I’m joyful that will help you discover out which inns on this listing have connecting room availability throughout your keep.
Households of three can simply keep in any of the inns on this listing in a room with a king mattress and rollaway or in a double room. Even when rooms have two double or two queen beds that may technically sleep 4, as talked about earlier, native laws prohibit greater than three folks to a room or perhaps a suite, most often (exceptions are outlined under).
When deciding the place to remain in Hong Kong with your loved ones, needless to say the environment friendly and clear Hong Kong MTR (subway) makes it doable to remain virtually anyplace in Hong Kong close to an MTR cease. The MTR gives quick access to issues to do in Hong Kong with children together with Ocean Park and Hong Kong Disneyland.
On the island, many vacationers want to remain close to the Central or Admiralty MTR (subway) stops. On the peninsula, it’s most handy to remain close to the Tsim Sha Tsui MTR cease as this space can be closest to the harbour and its sights, together with the Star Ferry.
Able to make your reservations? I’ve entry to value-added VIP facilities at many of the Hong Kong luxurious inns on this listing that you simply would not have entry to by yourself. This will embrace room upgrades, complimentary breakfast for 2, spa credit, airport transfers and different value-added facilities. I’ve personally been reserving my very own journey by means of these VIP packages for years. I’ve indicated which inns this is applicable to.
If you’re not reserving a luxurious lodge that has agent-exclusive VIP packages or you do not want connecting rooms (that are finest booked by means of an agent or the lodge instantly), Agoda is often by far the very best place to seek out offers on inns in Asia.
Luxurious Lodges
Hong Kong luxurious inns are among the finest on the earth. The extent of service is unparalleled. These inns all have a most occupancy of three folks, most often, in rooms and suites however they’ll often assure connecting rooms.

I’m in an Empire State of mind...
These streets will make you feel brand new, Big lights will inspire you...
In New York...
Tumblr media
After a being spoiled in the delta one lounge, with a variety of food and drinks (all inclusive), I met a lady from USA who told me she makes an effort to always turn up early enough to eat the food at the lounge as its the best anywhere... good to know, if I ever get the opportunity to travel business again. The flight was amazing, I kind of described it as 8 hrs of drink eat drink eat. My own private chair/reclining to bed area with plenty of room..ahhh bliss! I was set to arrive at about 9pm New York time, and figured border control would take a long time. Amazingly it didn’t, there was no major queues and I think I was out in about 30 mins tops.
After researching and reading reviews for transport from the airport I opted for the classic New York cab as its a fixed rate, and I couldn’t determine if Ubers could come into the airport pick up area. The last thing you want to be doing later at night is searching for a location in an unknown, busy and huge airport! Suffice to say there was no queue for the cabs so I got straight in one, and headed off to my hotel in the downtown Manhattan area, a few blocks from Times Square - perfect location according to all my NY friends - near enough to everything, but in a spot on the street away from the main noise. Hotels in peak season (summer) in New York are not cheap at all, and when I had researched I ended up with what I can only describe as mid range pricing (for this area), paying the little extra for the area I was in and also including breakfast. It is a perfect spot. The hotel is amazing. I am literally a few doors from the subway, walking distance to Times Square, Rockefeller, Empire State, Central Park. Right in the thick of it! In saying that - its kind of nothing to walk from 32nd street to 50th street here... so pretty much everything could be described as ‘walking distance’.😁
My first day was spent wandering in my local area, checking out the Rockerfeller centre, Empire state, the theatre district, Times Square. I tried Shake shack for lunch ( amazing fries!) Then I was done - the time change hit me a little bit I think! My knee was really sore, I had twisted it somehow and pulled some ligaments I think... so I went off to rest it
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next day was awesome. After heading around on a hop on off bus to get me off my knee a bit more, I got a much better orientation of the city. It also helped that later that evening one of my firiends I’d met on the recent tour I did in Azerbaijan, Georgia,Armenia, came and picked me up to go walk the Brooklyn bridge. The bridge is one of the oldest bridges in the United States, (construction was completed in 1893) a hybrid cable stayed/suspension bridge, spanning the East River between Brooklyn and Manhattan and an impressive 486.3m span . Lucky she works graveyards, and needed to sleep during that day as the timing was perfect, we were right up on it watching the sunset over the Manhattan skyline. Hanging with a local is always awesome you get to hear the story of an area from someone who has watched it evolve, you get the tips on where to go and what to eat. After walking to Manhattan and then back to Brooklyn, Marife and I kept walking down to the DUMBO area, where she knew there was a lovely water level park area, giving amazing views of Manhattan. Also enroute an Ample ice cream store (apparently a local icon in the ice cream world - I can attest to its amazingness!). Then it was off the another local institution, Garibaldis pizza. This place has queues out the door till all hours of the night! We were there at about 10pm and there was still a wait for a table! They only sell whole pizzas, and they are all made fresh to order. Having locals knowledge was brilliant, as I would never have known the next door “Guiliannas“ pizza, was exactly the same company (so in reality you just pick whichever queue is shorter!) Pizza was delicious, we ordered one ‘small’ one each, only to discover that ‘small’ was not as small as we thought!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Marife then took me over to see the Oculus, an incredible looking structure that housed a mall/shopping centre, and is the main terminal station for public transport in the world trade centre area. The building opened in 2016 and since then has been somewhat of an attraction for visitors to the city. I must say during the evening it looks amazing all lit up, and on a week night, it was really quite empty. An amazing design. Unfortunately the nearby 9/11 water memorials were closed off to the public when we arrived, ( I found out a few days later they close at 9pm). We then headed over to the flatiron building, an early 1900’s triangular 22 story building located in the flatiron district. The building looks a lot like a clothes iron (hence the name), and is one of those cool buildings that you want to somehow be able to go inside to see what shape the rooms are. Again, a very quiet area late at night on a week night - so it was easy to park and head over from some great night time photos. What a night - this was the point where I got it. I understood why so many love NYC, the locals love it, and the infection spreads.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The following day I travelled around on the bus again in the opposite direction and jumped off at Macy’s to go and explore the enormous 11 floor, flagship store in Herald square . By the time I walked out of there, I had no idea where I was. I could not see the landmarks I had identified as I entered - somehow I had come out on another whole street frontage. Anyway I got back to my hotel via a local hot dog store that had been recommended to me - all I can think is I am literally going to turn into a burger or something this stuff is everywhere! I was then ready to go out for a Cuban dinner with a couple I had met back in October during the Italian delights tour. It was fantastic to catch up with them! The restaurant, the food and the atmosphere were amazing. Aldo and Kristen and their two teenagers then took me on a walk through the streets to Hudson Yards to see the “Vessel”, a new installation that opened in March this year (2019), and already an added attraction for the city. It’s an interactive artwork imagined by Thomas Heatherwick comprising of 15 intricately interconnected flights of stairs designed to be climbed and enjoyed by visitors (with some amazing views apparently). It was really cool to see, and to hear Aldos stories about the construction jobs he’s worked on in the city enroute. FYI there is one hotel I will never ever ever stay in due to rats....

Tokyo 3 Day Itinerary for First Time Visitors
Tokyo is one place where you won’t see the time pass, there is so much to do. From world class restaurants to beautiful gardens and temples, there’s something for everyone. Our Tokyo 3 day itinerary will give you a taste of Electric Town, as the capital of Japan is nicknamed. Just don’t be surprised if you keep coming back for more!
Tokyo 3 Day Itinerary – Day 1
Chuo
Spelt Chūō, this central district of Tokyo is a thriving business area yet there’s plenty to entice visitors. Our first stop, Hama-Rikyu Gardens at 1-1 Hamarikyu-teien, are a real oasis of calm in the heart of Tokyo. Originally a hunting ground and nobleman’s residence in the Edo period from 1603, it was opened to the public in 1946. Surrounded by the skyscrapers of the Shiodome district, the gardens are beautifully landscaped. There’s a tea house in the middle of the lake where you can watch the birds landing. The garden has an unusual late blossoming cherry tree and some stunning camelia trees. Opening hours are from 9.00 to 17:00 and there’s a small entrance fee of :¥300.
The Tsukiji Market at 5-2-1 Tsukiji is an interesting place if you’re keen on sashimi and fresh fish. Whilst the inner wholesale section has restricted opening hours for visitors, the outer market and restaurants are popular with locals and tourists alike. You can eat tasty fresh crab sticks and other delicacies at one of the many food stalls. Get there early to beat the crowds – it’s open from 5 am to 2 pm and closed on Sundays.
Minato
For lunch, we recommend a true Tokyo hidden gem. Tokyo Shiba Tofuya Ukai is a traditional merchant’s residence from the Samurai era. Located in the Shibakoen area of Minato district next to Tokyo Tower, it is set in picturesque gardens. The restaurant has a series of private dining rooms with traditional but comfortable seating, overlooking an inner courtyard garden. The restaurant is famous for its tofu dishes cooked in a variety of ways as well as blowfish, a rare delicacy.
There are quite a few interesting things to do in Minato including Tokyo Tower. Open every day from 9 am to 11 pm, it’s an imposing sight at 333 metres tall, with its bright orange steel framework. From the top you can see as far as Mount Fuji on a sunny day. Through the glass windows, you can spot a shrine and some colourful Autumn foliage. One floor down, there’s a fun sight – the Lookdown. You can see through a metal grid to the bottom of the tower. The highlight of our Tokyo Tower visit was the performers dressed in colourful costumes, singing Christmas songs in Japanese.
For dinner in Minato, try Tarafukuuokin at 1-9-1 Shinbashi Minato is known as Codfish Fish Gold in English. It’s a traditional izakaya, a tavern popular with locals that serves some amazing sashimi dishes.
Another option is Sarashina-Nunoya restaurant in Shibadaimon at 1 Chome−15−8. This family owned restaurant have been making soba noodles for hundreds of years. It’s a casual place where the noodles are the star of the show.
Shinjuku
Why not take a photography tour by night in the Shinjuku commercial and entertainment area. It’s home to the busiest railway station in the world and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Buildings.
Tokyo 3 Day Itinerary – Day 2
Asakusa
Asakusa is one of the most popular places for visitors to Tokyo. Senso-Ji Temple in particular is a fascinating insight into Japanese culture and Buddhism. It’s Tokyo’s oldest temple and with over 30 million visitors each year it’s the most popular spiritual site in the world. Head first to the viewing platform of the Asakusa Tourist Information Centre at 2 Chome-18-9 Kaminarimon. The view of the Kaminarimon or Thunder Gate is worth checking out and there’s a cafe too. Walk along Nakamise Dori, which is lined with many souvenir shops. It’s a good place to come for kimonos, obi belts, stationery and other gifts. Along the way we noticed quite a few Japanese women dressed in traditional kimonos, socks and sandals. You can rent them from the shops nearby and pose for photographs. Closer to the main shrine, many people were consulting little strips of paper to find out their fortunes. The giant flipflop on the side of one shrine was intended to scare any potential demons who would think that a giant lives there.
There are a few other interesting things to do in Asakusa, including a visit to a typical izakaya Japanese pub or to Hanayashiki, the oldest amusement park in Japan. Close to Asakusa, there’s the Tokyo Skytree observation tower and shopping centre in the Sumida district.
You can also take a river cruise from Hinode to Asakusa as there are regular day and night time tours. Ours took us past 12 bridges, including the Rainbow Bridge which looked stunning at night. The best spot for taking photos is at the back of the boat on the outside deck. On a chilly night you might prefer to sit on the inside deck but was quite mild.
Tokyo 3 Day Itinerary – Day 3
Ginza
For your final day in Tokyo, head to Ginza in the Minato district. Shopping in Ginza is second to none, with many luxurious department stores and malls such as Ginza Six and Ginza Plaza. Ito-ya is an amazing stationery store spread over 9 floors.
There are also some fantastic restaurants in Ginza including Shunjukusei Ginza Grill which specializes in the highest quality Japanese Tajima beef.
Ristorante Hiro Ginza is another great choice for its delicious Italian-Japanese fusion food. What else is there to do in Ginza? Kabukiza Theater is the perfect place to see a kabuki performance. This traditional Japanese art form is known for its elaborate costumes.
Chiyoda
The Imperial Palace is an impressive sight, being surrounded by a moat. The official residence of the Emperor and Empress of Japan, it was previously the site of Edo Castle. The public can visit Kita-no-maru-koen Park, Kokyo Higashi Gyoen (Imperial Palace East Gardens) and Kokyo Gaien free of charge. The latter is the plaza directly in front of the palace, which is a good vantage point for the Nijubashi bridges by which you enter the inner palace. Talking of which, it’s not generally possible to visit the inner grounds apart from on 2 January and 23 December.
The business district of Marunouchi is also worth a visit. For shopping in Tokyo, Kitte is an excellent choice. This upmarket shopping mall has many international boutiques as well as Japanese household goods and trendy eateries spread over 7 floors. There’s a great view of Tokyo Station from the top floor observation deck.
Shibuya
Any itinerary for Tokyo should include Shibuya Crossing, the world’s busiest traffic intersection, Shibuya Crossing.  Known as “The Scramble” it’s been estimated that up to 1000 pedestrians on average are crossing at any given time. The area of Shibuya is popular with young people and covers 15.11 km2.  With giant screens displaying advertisements, it’s particularly buzzing at night.
Getting to Tokyo
Tokyo has two international airports, Haneda and Narita. Haneda is closer to the city centre and the majority of domestic flights land there. Our ANA flight from London Heathrow to Haneda airport was peaceful and waiting staff were friendly and attentive. There are quite a few companies flying to Tokyo including Emirates, Japan Airlines and British Airways.
Getting Around Tokyo
If you prefer to get around by taxi, you can hail them on the street quite easily or order a Uber cab. The subway is extremely clean, safe and reliable. We took it a few times during our stay and it wasn’t too crowded though we didn’t take it in rush hour. You can buy individual tickets or a 1 or 3 day pass. The subway is fairly easy to navigate as there are direction signs in both Japanese and English.
Where to Stay in Tokyo
There’s no shortage of luxury hotels in Tokyo and a surprising amount of reasonably priced options too. We particularly like the Celestine Tokyo Shiba for its excellent value and contemporary decor and The Mandarin Oriental and The Peninsula for their service levels.
A Taste of Tokyo
We hope you’ve enjoyed this Tokyo itinerary and that it inspires you to revisit or head there for the first time. Why not combine your visit with a trip to the beautiful region of Oita in Kyushu, only an hour and a half away by plane. It has the most hot springs of any area of Japan and some stunning scenery.
Do you have any tips for first time visitors to Tokyo?
Pin this for later or share with friends if you’ve found it useful

A Visit to Warsaw
The D&O Diary’s European assignment continued last week with a stop for meetings in Warsaw, Poland, a city that absolutely confounded expectations. As befits a national capital of a country with a growing economy, Warsaw (in Polish, var-SHAW-vah) is a dynamic, energetic city, and full of history and interesting architecture. It also a surprisingly green city, with a huge, beautiful river, and vast parklands.
Following World War II, Poland was a part of the Eastern Bloc of countries. The remnants of the country’s Soviet era are still in evidence, although rapidly being modernized or expunged. Warsaw’s roadways still show the Soviets’ penchant for building wide boulevards, which today are choked with traffic, as shown in the first picture below. Many of city blocks still contain Soviet era concrete buildings, but many of those buildings are quickly being replaced by 21st century steel and glass towers. In the center of the city is what is still perhaps the city’s most well-known structure, the Palace of Culture and Science, originally dedicated to Josef Stalin. (The locals call it by a name that refers to a specific part of Stalin’s anatomy.) The building is still the tallest building in Poland, although the encroaching modern office towers seem to be giving it a run for its money.
Aleje Jerozolimskie, a typically wide boulevard in Warsaw
The Soviet-era Palace of Culture and Science
A view of the Palace of Culture and Science from the River
The busy streets and the transformation from the Soviet era are consistent with my expectations. One part of the city I did not anticipate is how much green space it contains. On my first full day in the city, I walked to the Łazienki Krowlewskie (Royal Baths) park, about a mile south of my hotel. I had intended just to have a quick look, but it proved to be such a beautiful park that I wound up staying and exploring it for the better part of the afternoon.  One of the most striking features in the wooded, 200-acre park is the baroque 17th century Palace on the Isle, which served as a summer residence for Polish monarchs. The park also includes a famous sculpture of Poland’s most famous composer, Frederik Chopin. It was, in fact, a perfect late summer day, well-suited for wandering around in the park.
The Palace on the Isle in the Łazienki Park
The Chopin Monument in Łazienki Park (the statue depicts Chopin under a willow tree)
A wooded walkway in Łazienki Park
More of Łazienki Park — it was a beautiful summer day
I also visited Warsaw’s famous Old Town. I suspect that most people these days describing their visit to Warsaw would lead with a description of the Old Town. It certainly is beautiful and interesting, but I confess to having mixed feelings about the Old Town. The original structures in the Old Town were all destroyed in the Second World War. What is there now is almost entirely a reconstruction. To be sure, the Varsovians did an amazing job reconstructing their historic center city. Indeed, the success of the old city’s restoration is one of the reasons the Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The reconstructed old city quarter does have a convincing air of an antiquity.
But the hordes of tourists and the plethora of souvenir stores and shops selling ice cream also lend it a bit of a Disney World feel. The beautifully rebuilt older city is certainly an interesting place to stroll around on a summer evening. Or to sit in a sidewalk café and enjoy some of the excellent Polish beer. In fairness, I did in fact lead this post with a picture of one of old town’s most distinctive features – the picture at the top of the post shows the Palace Square, with the Sigismund Pillar on the left (memorializing Sigismund III, the first Polish monarch from the Swedish Vasa dynasty).
  Old Town Market Square
A view in the New Town area, looking toward the Barbican
The Warrior Mermaid, a symbol of Warsaw (and apparently one of those rare river mermaids)
One of the things I wanted to do while I was Warsaw was to have a look at the Vlatava River, and also to have a view of the city from the far side of the river. It proved to be more difficult than I had anticipated to get to the river – a wide, busy roadway divides the city from the river. I finally made my way to the riverside and then crossed over a busy bridge to have a look back at central Warsaw from Praga, on the far side of the river. It was here, in Praga, just across the river from Warsaw, that the Soviet army stopped in August 1944, when the Polish resistance Home Army rose up against the Nazi occupiers. The Soviet Army deliberately held back from aiding the Poles; the last thing in the world Stalin wanted was an independent and effective force on the ground in Poland. He was content to let the Nazis eliminate the Home Army.
To the surprise of both the Nazis and the Soviets, the Home Army fought valiantly and effectively, and it took the Nazis much longer than anyone anticipated to put down the rising. Hitler was so infuriated that that when the last of the resistance forces finally capitulated, he ordered the  Nazi forces to destroy the remaining city – a task the Nazi troops completed with a grim effectiveness. In an era full of tragedy, the doomed ’44 Rising is among the most tragic.
The Vlatava River, with the National Stadium on the left.
A view of Warsaw from the far side of the river, in Praga. This is how close the Soviet army was during the ’44 Rising; yet they held back and did nothing to aid the insurgents.
The bravery of the resistance fighters lives on in Polish memory; the interlaced Kotwica mark, the Home Army’s symbol, can be found today on walls throughout the city. The symbol combines the letters P and W, to symbolize the phrase Polska Walcząca (“Fighting Poland”).  The Soviet occupiers banned the symbol, but it lived on and it continues to serve as a sign for a variety of political causes.
  The Kotwica symbol
Another vestige of the city’s complicated 20th century history is that memorials to the terrible events can be found throughout the city. Across the street from my hotel was a fascinating photo exhibit with huge photo enlargements of faces of the resistance fighters. It takes your breath away to realize how young they were. In the park next to my hotel was a huge painting depicting the civilian evacuation from the city at the outset of the rising; the artist was a small child at the time of the evacuation. In another part of the city, there is a dramatic memorial to the Warsaw Rising, and nearby a memorial to the separate 1943 Ghetto Rising.
At the end of the Second World War, the city was left in rubble. Much of its population was gone – dispersed or dead. Over 45 years as part of the repressive Soviet bloc followed. With the city’s complex and tragic past, it is a wonder to see what it has now become. The modern office buildings, the sleek new subway system, and the youthful crowds that throng the streets all testify to dynamic present and a promising future.
Because of the beautifully rebuilt old town, because of its parks, because of what the city has become, Warsaw is a great place to visit. But Warsaw is also a great place to visit because of what it represents as a symbol of resilience and courage.
  Respect, Warsaw. Respect.
  More Pictures of Warsaw:
Nowy Świat, which runs through the city’s historic district and connects the royal palaces.
This is the Hotel Bristol, where I stayed during my visit. Great Old Europe hotel. Feels like it is right out of a Bond movie. Perfect location on the Royal Way, about 500 yards from the Castle Square. The Old World feel is genuine; the hotel is one of the few buildings that survived the war. Only problem, as I learned during my stay, is that the reason it survived reportedly is that it was the residential headquarters for the top Nazi officials (I am just quoting the guidebooks for this information.) For what it is worth, it has a very nice bar and a great fitness center.
The Saxon Garden, another of the city’s many beautiful parks.
The city’s awesome Metro. The sleek new No. 2 line (pictured) just opened in 2015.
For anybody planning a trip to Warsaw in the near future, here’s a tip you won’t find in the guidebooks. Along the Vlatava River, at the brand new Nauki Kopernick Metro station, there are a bunch of informal beer gardens. A couple of dozen food trucks, a ton of buskers, and a relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere. Perfect place to watch the evening gather on a warm summer evening. Go now; in a year or two, I am sure it will all be replaced by a Ritz-Carlton Hotel with an upscale mall attached.
The mermaid in the old town square is a facsimile, for tourists. The real Warrior Mermaid statute is down by the river, as pictured here. The sculptor’s model was in fact an active participant in the ’44 Warsaw Rising. This is a serious Warrior Mermaid statute, friends.
    Pirogis, it’s what for dinner.
    Sunset at Castle Square.

The modern office buildings, the sleek new subway system, and the youthful crowds that throng the street all testify to dynamic present and a promising future.
Because of the beautifully rebuilt old town, because of its parks, because of what the city has become, Warsaw is a great place to visit. But Warsaw is also a great place to visit because of what it represents as a symbol of resilience and courage.
  Respect, Warsaw. Respect.

It also a surprisingly green city, with a huge, beautiful river and vast parklands.
One characteristic part of the city that I did not anticipate is how much green space the city contains. On my first full day in the city, I walked to the Łazienki Krowlewskie (Royal Baths) park, about a mile south of my hotel. I had intended just to have a quick look, but it proved to be such a beautiful park that I wound up staying and exploring for the better part of the afternoon.  One of the most striking features in the wooded, 200-acre park is the baroque 17th century Palace on the Isle, which served as a summer residence for Polish monarch.
But the hordes of tourist and the plethora of souvenir stores and shops selling ice cream also lend it a bit of a Disney World feel.

Another vestige of the city’s complicated 20th century history is that memorials to the terrible events can be found throughout the city.

It also a surprisingly green city, with a huge, beautiful river and vast parklands.

The busy streets and the transformation from the Soviet era are consistent with my expectations. The park also includes a famous sculpture of Poland’s most famous composer, Frederik Chopin. It was, in fact, a perfect late summer day, well-suited for wandering around in the park.
