Was listening to a podcast of andy and he talked about how much it is to expect a half hour comedy to address and lead the way on such critical issues in our country when it should be the real world and people in office that lead the way. All they can do as a comedy about cops is shed a little light onto matters and have their characters reflect. No matter what they do it will never be enough and we have to accept thag. They may do something admirable or semi admirable but it wont matter until systems in our country change. The furthest they’ll be able to go is this is awful and needs to change, which we already know. I have struggled with the idea of the show being copganda because i can cite several instances of it being so, as well as several more of them being the opposite and doing an amazing job of addressing social issues. I already know this show is going to be able to do more than other cop shows because of their history of calling cops out but you just cant expect a show about cops to solve these issues! I think most people get this but I just want to put out there to viewers to check on your expectations of what you want this show to do and what it means to “do it right” and that no matter what, real life is still happening and matters far more than whatever b99 is able or not able to accomplish
Im sorry im writing you a letter lol but I kinda feel sorry for the cast and crew this season...This is likely to be the final season and everything has changed and that isnt on them but they have to deal with it. I hope they’re able to really enjoy filming and celebrate all they’ve accomplished because this show has been groundbreaking in so many authentic ways and they do not recieve enough recognition for it in my opinion. I’ll never forget that this show is the first time I ever saw two latina women portrayed as complex lovable characters that didnt fit stereotypes and weren’t related in one show! Representations always been kinda one off like oh we have one black dude or asian girl, you should feel seen but one person shouldnt have to carry that representation. The fact that I was in high school before i got to see this happen makes me want to cry in a way I cant explain and will never make sense to those who have always seen people like them lead normal lives on american tv. Sorry im an emotional wreck thinking about these characters leaving me. I’ve never cried from the thought of losing a show before and believed I was over it after the cancellation and being grateful to get anything else at all but damn it is hitting me all over again. Just sending a lot of love to the people who have made this show possible and for people loving it and supporting its longevity 💕💕
wow you’ve made so many great points i hope everyone reads this and takes it all to heart. no matter what they’re going to do their best and for some people that just won’t be enough and that’s okay. but for those of us who have dedicated years of our lives to loving and supporting this show that’s so much more than “a cop show”, we should celebrate every minute we have left with it and appreciate that they’re addressing these issues at all because god knows tons of other cop shows won’t be able to do it as well or even at all.

Ikigai Is Why You Shouldn’t Be Afraid Of Retirement
生き甲斐, pronounced ikigai, is a Japanese concept that means “reason for being.” What makes you get up in the morning without an alarm clock because you’re just so damn excited?
From 1999 – 2001, I had to get to the office by 5:30am because I was a lowly grunt in the investment banking world. Making photocopies of last night’s research, getting coffee for the traders, and making presentations was all part of the morning equities routine. But I was excited because I had a fast-paced job right out of college in NYC.
From 2001 – 2007, despite having to continue getting to work at a goodness forsaken hour, I was still excited because I got a new job in San Francisco with the opportunity to build my own little business out west. Working in a satellite office gave me my first glimpse of what entrepreneurship could be like.
But when the financial crisis hit in 2008, my excitement turned into fear. I no longer went to the office because I loved all that went on in the stock markets. I started setting multiple alarm clocks to ensure I got in on time because I didn’t want to give management a reason for firing me. It was depressing to come in and see everything crumbling so quickly.
Despite a recovery by 2012, my excitement for work no longer existed. Work had become a bureaucratic nightmare, so I figured a way out. In retrospect, what I thought was my ikigai for 13 years was simply a job where I traded time for money. Helping institutions make more money felt shallow, even if some of the institutions were responsible for a teacher’s pension.
But through work, I learned how to be a better communicator. Through the practice of writing daily newsletters about what went on in Asia while we slept, I slowly found my ikigai through storytelling. Clients and colleagues alike would regularly reach out to say how much they enjoyed the newsletter.
Now that I don’t have a compliance department breathing down my neck with Financial Samurai, it’s a joy to help make people believe a little more in themselves by showing what’s possible.
A Closer Look At Ikigai
According to Akihiro Hasegawa, a clinical psychologist and associate professor at Toyo Eiwa University, the origin of the word ikigai goes back to the Heian period (794 to 1185). “Gai comes from the word kai (“shell” in Japanese) which were deemed highly valuable, and from there ikigai derived as a word that means value in living.”
“Japanese people believe that the sum of small joys in everyday life results in a more fulfilling life as a whole,” writes Hasegawa. I believe it. Small things for me like winning a high school conference tennis title and watching my boy take his first steps collectively bring an immense amount of joy.
Mieko Kamiya, author of the book, Ikigai-nitsuite, explains that as a word, ikigai is similar to “happiness” but with some subtle differences. He writes, “Ikigai is what allows you to look forward to the future even if you’re miserable right now.”
One sunny October day in 2011, I found hope that there could be life after finance. For a couple years prior, I was in a funk, no longer enjoying the day-to-day of the business.
After three hours of hiking up and around Santorini, Greece, I stopped to rest at an open bar overlooking the crater. I had my iPhone and the bar had WiFi. Perfect!
My moment of hope: October 2011, Santorini, Greece
I ordered an overpriced $10 Mythos beer and began to check my messages. In my inbox was an advertising client based in London whom I had worked with before. He said he’d pay me $1,100 if I’d put a link on the homepage of this site.
I told him sure! So he sent me the code, I managed to copy and paste the code onto my homepage with my iPhone, and he Paypaled me the $1,100 within 10 minutes after I was done. The whole process took 30 minutes.
That was the moment when I finally realized I could finally escape my job. I immediately ordered another overpriced $10 Mythos beer and devised my layoff plans.
Ikigai Is Why You’ll Be Fine After Retiring
Despite having enough money to survive, after you retire you’ll always be worried for an unknown period of time. My worry lasted for about two years before I could confidently say that I 100% no longer feared running out of money or had made the wrong decision.
After you retire from a conventional job, you’re not going to just sit on your hands and do nothing. You will naturally start doing what provides you the most amount of purpose. And because you will be so focused on making sure retiring when you did was the right choice, you will inevitably find your ikigai!
Please take a look at this graphic explaining ikigai. It might look like a lot of New Age mumbo jumbo, but ikigai has been around for centuries.
Now it’s time to list all the things that will help you find your ikigai. Here’s my list.
What I Love:
Connecting with people
Learning different perspectives
Traveling abroad
Creating something from nothing
Getting recognized for my efforts
Reading great stories
Taking care of my family
Writing
What I’m Good At:
Telling stories
Doing what I say
Not giving up
Building partnerships
Simplifying the complex
Getting the most out of my body and mind
Writing
What The World Needs:
Access to free financial education
More interesting stories
Geographic, racial, and socioeconomic diversity in personal finance
As many different perspectives as possible
A stronger support network for those most in need
What I Can Be Paid For:
My writing
My speaking
The Financial Samurai brand
After going through this exercise, I understand why I’ve been able to keep Financial Samurai going since 2009. Writing doesn’t feel like work. Instead, writing is a joy that lets me experience a couple of the things that I love: creating something from nothing and learning new perspectives. If I haven’t written for a couple days, I start feeling antsy, as though I hadn’t exercised for a couple days.
Now that I’m in my 10th year of running Financial Samurai, everything from coming up with the editorial calendar to finding products that fit my work has become second nature. So far, I’ve never experienced writer’s block because I’ve found there is always something interesting happening in the world.
As a big proponent of public libraries where I spent so many hours as a kid, I’m on a mission to improve free financial education. It’s not right that only the wealthy or super talented get to go to the best grade schools or universities. The system is so stacked against the poor it’s preposterous once you discovery all the details. Knowing that what I write can help someone with fewer means or talent get ahead really motivates me to never quit.
Finally, I love that no reader pays me a cent to read anything. Asking for money or for business always feels a little bit off. Because I’ve built a brand in the personal finance space, financial companies come to me. I get to then pick and choose which product makes the most sense for the community. Then I go deep because it’s likely I’m using the product or have invested my own money in the product as well.
Having a viable passive income stream has helped me turn Financial Samurai into a predominantly storytelling website. I really just want to write stories I would want to read. If I had retired without enough passive income, it’s highly likely this website would be mostly about product reviews – good for business, but boring to read.
Always Find Your Ikigai
No matter whether you are still working or in retirement, always keep searching for your ikigai. It will not be easy getting all the parts to fit and your desires may also change over time as well. But it’s absolutely worth going through this exercise to improve your life.
After you’re done listing all your points, proceed to list out all the relevant jobs or businesses that fit as many of your points as possible. Brainstorm. You may not get them all, but I’m sure you can get most of them if you are flexible with your income requirements.
With a family to now take care of, running Financial Samurai has become even more meaningful. I’ve got so much to learn from readers who are more experienced parents. There are so many family-related financial topics to write about in the coming years. Finally, I’m absolutely excited to use Financial Samurai to teach my son how to communicate better and run an online business.
Please move on from your job if it no longer excites you. The labor market is as tight as it has ever been. There is a better fit out there if you spend time looking. Do not settle! For those of you who’ve hit your retirement number, or who have achieved a net worth equal to 20X your average gross income or more, I encourage you to consider taking a leap of faith.
I promise you. You won’t turn into a zombie in retirement, mindlessly wandering through a field of despair. Rather, with renewed vigor, you will rationally move towards doing the things you love. If you still don’t believe me, know that the Okinawans have the highest life expectancy of any country: 90 for women and for men, 84, a significant 8-9 years longer than American life expectancy.
Having something to live for truly matters.

I was just in a car accident on Thursday. Its basically totalled my car. Car insurance trying to be cheap on repairs?
I was recently in a car accident. The other driver T boned me and he's at fault. I have my car towed to a certified BMW repair shop. The insurance adjuster assessed my car and approve the repairs.I later found out that they are going to repair my car with piece meal parts from used car from a junk yard. Half a door and part of the frame will be welded. Is this acceptable? BMW said it will not fit there standards but it is what the insurance paid for. Is the insurance trying to cheat me or is this standard practice? Do I have any say on this? Should I get a lawyer?

I am looking to buy an SV650S. So far this decisions has been been placed on price, insurance cost, easability in riding (based on what I have reasearched), and overall looks. Once I get to the dealership it will get my final approval based on the feel when I actually get on it. But assuming that I still love the feel of the bike, how do I begin the haggling process. This is the first bike for me and I don't want to be taken advantage of. Currently near where I live, Los Angeles area, one is being adverticed as a new 2007 for $6199 OTD. Can I sue my auto insurance company for an at fault accident with an insured driver on my policy?
I was a passenger in my own vehicle during a near fatal accident where the driver, who is an insured driver on my policy, had road rage with another driver. The driver ended up receiving a DUI as a result of the accident. I tried to sue my auto insurance company for under/unisured motorist, but since the accident was a sole vehicle accident, the insurance company would not settle for my injuries. Due to the nature of the accident and the result of the driver being intoxicated, the auto insurance company accepted liability for the driver's negligence and tried to settle for $4,200. I ended up hiring a lawyer because I have an unpaid hospital bill in excess of the settlement amount. In addition, I have had complications from my injuries and need lifetime treatments. We have an arbitration hearing next month, but the driver is only named on the lawsuit, not my auto insurance company. This accident happened in Pennsylvania and I had full tort, stackable, 100,000/300,000. My question is...why is the insurance company not insuring the named insured driver (who by the way happens to be my husband), on my insurance policy?""

Worries about insurance with a tracker?
Being a 19 year old male who lives in London, insurance was clearly going to be a problem. I have however found some decent quotes which include having a tracker fitted. Now, I don't mind it too much but I do have some worries: a) The location/address: on the quote, I provided a relative's address which is outside of London (the address is about 40 to 50 minutes away from my actual address). Consequently, the price was cut by about half! The worry I have is that if I have a tracker installed, won't it be obvious to the insurer that this isn't my real home address when they see me parking and basically using my actual address instead of the relatives'? I won't be anywhere near the relative's address b) Speed limits: I once read somewhere that '90%+ people go over the speed limit' and although I don't know how true this is, it's clear from driving that in some areas, going at 30 causes delays and its a bit daunting when you're at the limit but everyone else is just speeding past. How much would this change the insurance? c) Price: is the price of the quote they provide the limit? What I mean is if they see bad driving with the tracker, could it increase the quote or is there a limit? Thanks for any help :) P.S Happy new year!""

Who has the best car insurance?
Im looking for car insurance, and I need it soon. Sorry for the flood of questions, but no one is answering... And now the question- How has your insurance company been to you? Since most of the companies I've looked at have similar rates, I have the freedom to choose a company not by pricing, but by how good they actually are. I've spent hours searching reviews of all the major players, and I've seen almost exclusively horror stories about how bad the companies are once you file a claim. Geico, Allstate, and especially progressive (defended policyholders killer in court to weasel out of paying out claim), all seem to have a pretty bad reputation among their customers. Now I'm not a fool, I understand that most reviews are written by people who have been wronged. People are much less likely to write a positive review because their company has followed through, as this is what is to be expected in the first place. It is entirely possible that behind that sour review, there are several satisfied customers who didn't feel a need to review their service. If any of those people read this, please help me out with this choice. Additionally, anyone who may be in the wronged group, if you have a reason that you would not reccomendation your insurance co please let me know! Thanks for any help!""

Car Insurance Question (regarding insurance)?
Hello, I have an insurance question. Last December, my wife, 2 y/o daughter, & I were involved in a car accident. The other driver was at fault, this was noted on the police report. My wife & daughter both required medical attention. My daughter suffered a broken leg & has since recovered. Unfortunately, my wife's recovery is taking a little longer. She required immediate surgery on her wrist & needs daily physical therapy. Although I have a laywer, car insurance & health insurance, I've had to front enormous amounts of money to cover medical expenses. My health insurance will not reimburse me for expenses. Can I ask my car insurance company to help me out with expenses? They know the other party is at fault (police report says so). I've had to liquidate stocks & savings to make ends meet. I'm now out of money. I was not at fault, yet I'm being punished. Any advice on how to get reimbursed ASAP? My settlement probably will not occur until next July.""

Can somebody tell me if this would actually work or not? Please no philosophical answers or opinions on right or wrong or against the law - I dont give a F**k. If we get pulled over will they ask for proof of insurance? Do we need insurance to drive a rented vehicle? Also does uhaul offer insurance? What does it cover and how pricey is it? I told my bf that you probably dont need insurance to drive a rented vehicle but he disagrees with me. So if you can help me prove him wrong I'd greatly appreciate it.

Auto insurance in California?
I bought a car in Aug 09. It's under my dads name for cheaper insurance purpose. But I never really got to the insurance part and have been driving w/out it. I just got a letter in the mail from the DMV saying my registration is suspended because I haven't provided financial proof... So I went earlier... and if my dad were to add the car and list me as a 2nd driver on my car, I would pay too much :| So the question here is... if my dad were to add the car and not list me as a 2nd driver, will I be covered? I really don't give a crap if it's fraud or not, just need to know if I will be covered since he will be lending me the car. Father wants to add a named driver to his insurance policy and wants to add the wife who is 48 years old whom holds a provisional licence. However, the daughter who is 17 (nearly 18) wants to be added as a named driver as she does quite a lot of practising in the car. From the situation would it be the same price for both? or would it be cheaper for the older women. Both have not passed test so wouldn't the insurance policy price be the same for both. My medical insurance company ask for homeowner insurance policy?
I fell on my deck, and went through surgery, the total medical expense is about 25K. Now my medical insurance company is asking for homeowner insurance policy. I am not sure how to handle it to avoid any potential cost to me such as deductible or premium increase. Is the medical insurance policy the primary or the homeowner insurance policy for this case? Thanks
Can I still be insured with my mother?
So, my crappy old car just broke down. In the last few months I have managed to save up some money and I have decided to purchase a used car. The car cost about 6000 dollars and I have gotten a 3000 dollar loan in my name to pay the rest of the cost. So I'm trying to get all the paper work done because everything is in my name. My mom already purchased a car so she couldn't' even help my out to get a loan. Before I could even get the car, the bank needs a binding from an insurance company. When I had my old car my mom had me under her insurance because the car was under her name. So I want to know if after I get my insurance on my new car if I will be able to switch it over with my mom. Or will I be able to transfer the old car insurance into the new one. Right now I am planning to get the same insurance she has. Will I always have to have the insurance under my name is it is my car? This is in Massachusetts""
What is the best Life Insurance company?
I'd like to get my mom some life insurance as she just turned 61. I'd like to know the cheapest/legit place to get life insurance for her. Any suggestions?
Whats the average cost of health insurance(+dental)?
I'm 19, female, never had any health problems, and married(dunno if any of that matters haa.) I'll be getting my own plan for the first time, I'm just wondering whats the average cost, what are some good providers to use that aren't too expensive, and does health insurance come with dental or is that a separate thing? Thanks!""
What cars typically have the lowest insurance rates?
I am looking into getting a new car, but am on a limited budget. I only work part time since I am still in school, so low insurance rates are as important as a good deal on the car.""
My car insurance and my driver license will be suspended?
Here is my story . Don't be harsh to me because I know my driving is bad I have been driving with this car for 7 months. I paid premium coverage. I did hit a divider myself and then I claimed my insurance in order to get my car repaired ( this time cost like $3000) After that 3 months, I hit a car in a parking lot. Another driver claimed my insurance and the insurance company paid them $600 to fix their car. After that 2 months, I again hit another car in the parking lot. I renewed my insurance in Jan. Before I paid $800 for 6 months, this time I paid $1900 for 1 year policy. Yesterday , I really hit another car on the road. I claimed my insurance again because the other driver's car really bad and I don't think I can pay off. My questions are : Should I pay deductible in order to get my car repaired because my car bad too and the body shop said It would cost 1k to 1.5k( because of the old damage) Will my license get suspended? Im living in CA and never get any tickets and this accident is the only one has police report? How will my insurance increase? Right now Im so stressed and confused about what Im going to ? Please help.""
How do i know what my car insurance covers?
I recently got into a car accident, just yesterday. There was 3passeners in the car. I, one of the 3. My sister who is 21 was driving the '99 Ford focus. It was not her fault. we were at a four way intersection and had a green light to go. Everyone was stopped besides our light going south &the other going north. An elderly woman on the right hand side who was going to turn, crashed into my side. (The passenger front, as well as the back door.) It is all crashed inward. We then hit a palm tree on the side of the road and landed on top of it. Some yellow/green fluid leaked out. Us 3 passengers in the Ford taurus all went to get checked at the hospital. We are all fine. But now we have no idea what to do with this wrecked car, that has now been towed. The Ford Taurus we were in, only has liability insurance. how will the car be fixed or can it even get fixed? This car accident all took place in Avon park, FL. The car we were in has Insurance from Michigan. Since that is where my father and his girlfriend purchased the car last year. The insurance &everything is under his girlfriends name. So Shes the one who said it only has liability insurance.""
Should I get a full coverage insurance on a rental car?
I have to rent a car for 2 weeks for business. Supposely, the cost should be reimbursed to me by a company after the assingment is done. Not sure if I can truly trust that. But anyway, if I don't get the insurance, it will be $500. But if I get insurance, it is $1200. I am a safe driver and I will be in a rural place. I am trying to convince myself that I don't need it. But then again, I worry about what might happen if accidents occur. The cost of rental car will be reimbursed by a company. But I am not sure if they are actully going to do that in timely manner and my credit card balance is high. I don't want to put extra money charged into my account. My credit card company and auto insurance company (on my own car) told me that they do not have insurance coverage on rental cars. What do you think? Thanks""
Can I get around paying really high price for Car Insurance being only 19yrs old>?
I am 19, dont want to pay high price for car insurance. My friend said I can do this: find a cheap insurance company for my dad/mum to get insured on the the nice car (e.g. BMW) just them, not have me on it aswell, then find the cheapest car to insure with co-op, with me under my mum or dad, altogether it shouldnt be more than 2k and you I can drive the beemer, as long as the beemer is registered in my dad/mums name. Can somebody tell me if this would actually work or not? Please no philosophical answers or opinions on right or wrong or against the law - I dont give a F**k. Just want to know whether this would work or if anybody else has any ideas 10 September at 23:00

Why you shouldn’t make a New Year’s resolution
Why you shouldn’t make a New Year’s resolution
Tumblr media
Each year, millions of Americans lose an average of 20 pounds and learn a new language within a few months of making their New Year’s resolutions.
Wait, what? That’s not actually true. I can tell you what really happens: Every January 2, a slew of people show up at my gym and hog the treadmills. It is rather frustrating. Luckily, I know they’ll be gone in a few weeks. That’s because they are part of the 80% of Americans who abandon their resolutions by the second week of February.
There has to be a better way. What if instead, we set goals throughout the year, rather than all at once when the clock strikes midnight? We would be less likely to feel overwhelmed by our commitment to training for a marathon and writing a novel, so we’d have a better chance of getting something done. After doing some research, I found a few other tips to achieve those goals you set.
Be specific. Begin by writing down exactly what you want. We’d all like to be more successful or more fulfilled, but what exactly does that mean to you? Let’s say you’d like to raise your professional visibility. There are a number of ways you can do it, including getting further training that can make you more valuable to clients or your employers or becoming more involved in professional or community organizations. And remember this isn’t a once-a-year activity, since it’s good to set new goals as circumstances change and new opportunities pop up.
Get even more specific. Once you narrow down your goal, drill down some more. If you wrote down that you want to raise your professional visibility, find out what’s available to you, when classes or activities take place and what you need to do to get involved. It’s easy to put off or forget about a goal such as “taking a class,” but once you find a class that fits your schedule and will truly add something to your professional or personal life, you’re more likely to follow through.
Consider timing. New Year’s resolutions are particularly challenging for CPAs in public practice, because no matter how motivated you are about a fresh start, you’re still looking straight ahead at busy season, with little time for extracurricular activities. Instead of trying to do it all at once, get out your calendar and make a reasonable schedule for following through on various objectives over the course of the year. Prioritize your goals to make sure you focus on what’s most important and that you make the best use of your time.
Commit. That includes resisting the temptation to give up when getting there takes longer than you expected, or turns out to be much more complicated than you had hoped. Talking about your goals can help, since other people can cheer you on and help motivate you to get through when the going gets tough.
Use these tips and tools whenever you want to reach an important goal, even if it’s in August! When it comes to goal setting for CPAs and CPA firms, there are some great resources available, including the PCPS SMART Goal Planning Grid and Goal Category Checklists. Small firms can also find a wealth of tools that can help them achieve their objectives on the AICPA small firm resources site.

The Fat Jew’s ‘Money Pizza Respect’ is the worst book I’ve ever read
I wish I liked the Fat Jews new book. It would make a far more interesting piece if he exceeded our expectations. No one I talked to expected it to be good. I bet he didnt even write it, said one friend. I bet he had his interns write it.
To contextualize this for people who arent on the Internet all the time, Josh The Fat Jew Ostrovsky became the center of controversy when he was accused of stealing memes and jokes from comedians this summer. Ostrovsky had been doing this for years, and amassed millions of Instagram followers with his admittedly excellent meme aggregating skills. But comedians took a stand when he signed with the talent agency CAA in August.
Upon reading Money Pizza Respect, there is no doubt in my mind that the unfortunately titled book is penned by the Fat Jew himself; I confidently assert that MoneyPizza Respect is singlehandedly the worst book I have ever read.
His actual sense of humorand Im talking about humor, not the memes he aggregatesis painfully abject. He relies on a Tucker Max-esque style of storytelling, glorifying cocaine and alcohol abuse and fucking his groupies, who all embody a different type of crazy girl stereotype.
In a chapter ironically titled The Eleven Commandments of Not Being the Worst Person Ever, he warns readers that if you aggressively and frequently talk about your sex life, people will think youre gay. When you tell me that you tackled a slam pig and stuffed her axe wound, he writes, I assume that your actual goal is having anal sex with men. Ostrovsky makes sure to note that the only exception to this rule is Dan Bilzerian, who has literally thrown a woman off his roof, breaking her foot, and been accused of kicking another woman in the face.
Money Pizza Respect is laced with homophobic comments. He writes a note to P. Diddy: Sorry for outing you as a homosexual. Im pretty sure you are, but Im sorry. Theres also a healthy dose of sexism, describing his female groupies as a bunch of fours and fives who have giant lady hands hate their dads. To complete the trifecta, he also manages to be transphobic, referring to transgender women as trannies in a chapter chronicling his brothers bachelor party. (When his brother and friends found out the strippers who were giving them lap dances were trans, they left the club immediately.)
Before I met Ostrovsky, I was confused about how he was so successful, especially after reading his book, where he brags about his selfish and generally gross behavior at every possible moment, proudly displays pictures of him wearing a thong made out of beef jerky, and writes things like, Cocaine is the greatest gift the world has ever seen.
When I sat down with him at a press junket, located at an arcade in Chinatown, I immediately understood why hes garnered so much success. He is unfortunately charming and is actually a naturally funny person. Hes like the cool, mean boy in 8th grade, the type who introduced pot to all your friends and made fun of girls for being ugly or not having boobs yet. The type who definitely bullied me, and yet I tirelessly tried to gain his affection.
During our interview, Ostrovsky remained on the defensive, masterful at answering my questions with non-answers. He is somebody who has never taken life seriously, which is perhaps not too difficult for a straight, white, affluent male. He is fundamentally interested in his conception of fun, and hopes youll join him for the ride. If not, fuck off.
Its not that I began to like Ostrovsky or his book any more after meeting him, but I went from hating him to feeling an iota of pity for him. His flamboyant and unapologetic immaturity, his bratty affect: This is what has brought him success, and what I imagine will be his inevitable downfall.
So my approach for this interview, because I know a lot of people have been shitting on you, is to not shit on you.
No ones been shitting on me.
I was curious about how that affected you emotionally, and how you felt about getting blasted by the media.
It was definitely a shitty situation. Im of the Internet, so its like a lot of people screaming about things. I respect trolling. I respect people screaming at one another, which is why the Internet is so fucking great. I definitely didnt take it personally. It was also something that needed to get talked about. People were not on the same page. Like a 38-year-old comedy writer and a 16-year-old Filipino millennial were not seeing the issue the same way.
I try to look at it like I was the face of the whole thing. I mean the Internet is a giant, lawless fuckin thing. Sometimes we need some rules But not too many. Because that would be weird. No parents. But you know, sometimes people get pissed. I obviously see it from the 16-year-old Filipino millennial side. I dont look for credit on my stuff and I dont ever watermark or anything like that, but I also get the other side too. Im old enough to understand both sides. I just want everyone to be happy so were fuckin partying.
Instagram for fucking photos of dogs playing volleyball in sunglasses and iguanas surfing. I just want to have everyone get heard, fix the problem, and then get back to surfing iguanas. It didnt rock me emotionally because I just saw it as something that needed to be discussed. It definitely got dangerous and exciting at some points. People just get so crazy, theres a portion of people who dont even know what theyre screaming about. I got chased by TMZ. Some guy followed me around a Duane Reade recording my phone call. That was tight.
You liked that?
I kinda felt like Leo , for like a second. It was also scary. No one wants that life. I was trying to look at it like this is a conversation that needed to be had. I didnt look at it as being shit on. The Internet is more important to me than my family or anything. I would love to be with the Internet, have sex with the Internet, I love the Internet. Now its a better place.
Why was it important for you to celebrate drugs, specifically cocaine, in your book?
Its a mixed bag. I refer to it as the best and worst thing ever. Part of the ethos of this book is that its a how-to guide in that its like I dont know what you should be doing but I know what you shouldnt be doing. Ive seen every horrible thing. I basically think you read this book and you dont do coke. Because youre like, its gonna make me unbearable. Like my breath is gonna smell like a diaper and get into a super intense conversation about stuff I dont even care about.
I think it depends on how old the reader is. For me, Ive done coke so I understood more where you were coming from in that it can be great and terrible at the same time. From a teenagers standpoint, it might just look really cool.
It depends. Im pretty explicit that its been responsible for the greatest things that ever happened, but also some of the most horrendous things, too. I think its more self-reflective than it is encouraging.
Your book is provocative is many ways. People are going to interpret some of the content as transphobic and homophobic. I was thinking of the chapter where you refer to trans women as trannies.
I dont know what youre specifically referring to.
You wrote about tranny strippers. Thats a contentious word. Many trans people have spoken out about how hurtful they find that term to be. I was curious about how you would respond to those critics.
is a factual account of what happened. Youre talking about an actual pejorative word?
Yeah. Its a slur. There were a bunch of moments in the book where I read something and immediately thought about how angry it would make social justice activists on the Internet.
Social justice people are angry at everything.
I was wondering if you included some things specifically to be provocative.
No, definitely not. First of all, any social justice person can come at me at any time. I literally have more transgender friends who will vouch for me than anyone. They self-identify as trannies. Ask a transgender who is not a nerd from the Internet how they identify, and I bet you will find hundreds who identify as trannies.
I know transgender folks who identify that way. Its like the N-word. If they call themselves that, its OK. But having a cis person is a different story.
Any person who would find offense in that kind of minutia is not someone who should be reading this book.
Its not your audience, thats probably true.
That shouldnt be anyones audience, as far Im concerned.
As I was reading your book, I was thinking about your crazy drug and sex stories as they relate to Tucker Maxs stories from I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell. Was he somebody who influenced you?
No, thats like bro culture stuff. This is completely different.
Tonally, there were similarities.
Ive never read it, but I also think that in terms of this book, like Ive been living performance art long enough to write a book full of debaucherous stories, but I wanted to go with more pathos, truth. From what I understand from Tucker Maxs stuff, he doesnt really go into too much stuff like that. Not all the stories here are particularly turnt up, as far as Im concerned. There are some that are honest family stories, not every story is about partying.
But a lot of them are.
We can go through it When I was writing it, putting in some emotion and truth, and some real feeling on it, like talking about my mom having sex with Shel Silverstein and being a 9-year-old child actor diva. Shit like that, to me, that is not the same as walking around a bar with a breathalyzer . I dont not relate to it, but Ive never read any of his stuff.
Ostrovsky as a child actor Josh Ostrovsky
Do you differentiate between the Fat Jew as your performative character and yourself as Josh?
No. I dont go home at night and unscrew the hairection , sit down, and listen to This American Life and be like, Oh, what a hard day at work! Being the Fat Jew! No, its all one in the same. To me, that would be disingenuous. I was doing this stuff long before there was anywhere to share it, long before anyone knew about it. Ten years ago, people in New York would be like, Oh thats the Fat Jew, the guy who does crazy stuff. It wasnt something I created and cultivated in order to share on social media for the masses.
But this is your career, this is your passion, but a lot of artists and actors differentiate between their performative self, which is still their self, and who they are when theyre not performing.
Im not an artist or an actor. Im neither.
How do you identify?
Im the only one whos really just going for it. Im genuinely making it up as I go along. I could start a ros company and that could become a real thing. Im about to do the worlds first EDM cologne.
What is that gonna smell like?
I dont know. Thats a good question. Like I dont even know what that means but Im gonna do it. Its 2015. Anything is possible. The world is so ridiculous at this point. I might open a yoga ashram in Toronto. Who knows? Im one of the only people who doesnt consider anything on or off limits. I dont think that it can be defined. We have this human need to compartmentalize, to be like, What are you? But I dont know.
I guess its my job to say, as a writer trying to make sense of what you do.
I dont think theres anything to make sense of. I dont know. What do you think I do?
I think youre a content creator and performer.
Thats vague. But yeah. Im not not. But thats what Im saying. I like to keep people guessing, keep people off kilter. If people think Im a comedian, I will move in a totally different direction and start making cologne. I wanna make people go, What the fuck? Keeping people guessing, keeping genuine conversation going about me, whether its, I dont want to say the word negative, but whatever its gonna be, thats what I am. A conversation starter? I dont know.
Tastemaker?
Conversation piece? Idiot? All of the above?
Whats your goal with your book? Why do you do what you do? Aside from the fact that you just want to do it.
The end goal with the book is that I think I can get some turnt-up 18-year-old to read. Thats the challenge, like, can you get fuckin some kids to read and think its really fuckin chill? Is that doable? Ill literally do it just for that.
Were doing reading raves to promote the book. IRL is what the programs called. Its just like huge DJs and books. Like, can you make them read? I think its doable. I dont think publishing knows how to do it. I dont think parents know how to do it.
So you want to make reading cool?
Kind of. What if Im somehow the guy to do it?
What are your favorite books?
I love Shel Silverstein, and not only because my mom fucked him. Mostly, Im the type to read 100 listicles. Like, what kind of bagel is Rihanna? You know what I mean? One-hundred times Rihanna ate fruit. Im not reading enough books.
No ones reading enough books.
Maybe now? That would fucking weird. To get a fucking 17-year-old whos over it to sit down and read an entire book? I mean I put in some stuff to break up the chapters, like you can color in a picture of Tyrese. I mean, I dont want you to have to read too much.

We need to talk about culture appropriation: why Lionel Shriver’s speech touched a nerve
Is it OK for white scribes to take on a black spokesperson? The assert that followed the American novelists address in Brisbane has shed new light on one of cultures hottest debates one that has hundreds of years of backstory and has sounded through literature, rap, stone and Hollywood movies
Lionel Shriver knew she was going to annoy beings. Inviting a renowned iconoclast to speak about community and belonging is like expecting a great grey shark to balance a beach ball on its nose, she articulated. She then used her keynote speech at the Brisbane columnists festival to tear into the debate that novelists most particularly grey writers are guilty of cultural appropriation by writing from the point of view of references from other culture backgrounds.
Referring to occurrences in which members of student authority at an American university faced impeachment after attended a tequila party wearing sombreros, and reports of a ban on a Mexican eatery from making out sombreros, the author of We Necessity to Talk About Kevin announced: The moral of the sombrero scandals is clear: youre not supposed to try on other people hats . Yet thats what were paid to time, isnt it? Step into other folks shoes, and try on their hats.
The response was instant. Sudanese-born Australian social activist Yassmin Abdel-Magied, who was attending the event, walked out and then rapidly wrote a comment part which was contended that Shrivers speech was a celebration of the unfettered exploitation of the experiences of others, for the purposes of the guise of fiction.
The argument is one of the most parted yet in a conversation that has a long record across literature, music, arts and rendition. While story might be the catalyst for this discussion, in the eyes of Abdel-Magied and others the issues are deeply rooted in real-world politics and a long history.
The image of the blackface singer creator of 1830s America the lily-white musician decorated up to look like a caricature of an African-American person and play-act comic skits is perhaps the most oft-invoked illustration of culture appropriation from record. The ethnic dynamic of minstrelsy was complex it was performed by African-American and Anglo actors alike but while African-American performers often sought to gain fiscal insurance from these best practices and in some cases use their scaffold to counter negative public stereotypes of themselves, white-hot performers reinforced those stereotypes. This produced within a society which continues to be has not been able to abolished bondage, and in which the political ability dynamic was very much racialized. As the civil right crusade thrived, so did criticism of white people attempting to exploit the pictures and events of people of colour for social and financial gain.
This pattern is recurred of all the countries, particularly in places that experienced colonisation and slavery, such as India, Australia and South Africa. As students, creators, activists and writers of emblazon fought to gain access to mainly grey institutions and public seats, and gained visibility in the cultural globule, they began to criticise the inaccurate images of themselves they construed created by and for the profit of others.
The issue has been heavily explored within the establishments but has reaped momentum in popular culture over the past decade. It underpins criticism of, among other things, Iggy Azaleas sonic blackness, Coldplays myopic construction of India in their music videos, and Miley Cyruss dance moves. Director Cameron Crowe lately apologised for casting Anglo-American actor Emma Stone as a part-Asian reputation in the 2015 movie Aloha not the first time a grey performer has been thrown to play a reputation from a different ethnic background in mainstream cinema. The proof has been assisted particularly by the feminist parish focus on intersectionality crudely the idea that discrimination takes on different forms depending on the hasten, class and/ or gender of the person or persons subject to discrimination.
The charge of culture appropriation is not confined to fiction, but at the moment thats perhaps the most heatedly raced terrain . In March, Harry Potter author JK Rowling was accused of proper the living institution of a marginalised people after a tale produced to her Pottermore website drew upon Navajo narratives about skinwalkers. Shriver herself mentioned the case of vehicles of grey British scribe Chris Cleave, whose novel The Other Hand is partly narrated by the character of a teenage Nigerian girl. In principle, I admire his firmnes, Shriver replied. She then went on to item reviewer Margot Kaminskis concerns that Cleave was manipulating the character, that he ought to be taking special care with representing its own experience that was not his own.
Shriver took aim at the proposal that an scribe should not use a reference they created for the service of a plot they saw. Of trend hes using them for his patch! she suggested. How could he not? They are his personas, to be operated at his caprice, to fulfil whatever purpose he cares to apply them to.
What borderlines around our own lives are we mandated to remain within? questioned Shriver. I would argue that any floor you are able to draw yours is yours to tell, and trying to push the boundaries of the authors its own experience is part of a fiction columnists job.
While it seems obvious that novelists of myth will endeavour to write from perspectives that are not their own, numerous writers of quality bicker there is a direct relationship between certain difficulties they face trying to make headway in the literary industry and the success of grey scribes who illustrate people of colour in their myth and who go on to build a successful literary profession off that. The difference between cultural illustration and cultural rights appropriation, by this logic, lies in the grey novelist telling storeys( and therefore taking producing possibilities) that would be better suited to a novelist of colour.
Some writers argue that it works in reverse, more. In an phenomenon for the Guardian in November last year, Booker Prize-winning author Marlon James told publishers too often pander to the white-hot wife( the majority of members of the book-buying public ), making writers of colouring to do the same. In a Facebook post responding to novelist Claire Vaye Watkins widely circulated essay On Pandering, James used to say the kind of storey favoured by publishers and bestows committees abode suburban white woman in the middle of ennui knowledge keenly observed epiphany pushed columnists of colour into literary conformity for fear of losing out on a journal deal.
Speaking to Guardian Australia, Indigenous Australian author and Miles Franklin winner Kim Scott adds its crucial to listen to the expressions of marginalised people who may not be given enough space to tell their own floors. Fibs are provides; theyre about reform and opening up interior macrocosms in the interests of expanding the shared nature and the common sense of community. So if theres many articulations telling we need more of us addressing our tales, from wherever theyre saying that, then that needs to be listened to.
Omar Musa, the Malaysian-Australian poet, rapper and novelist, told Guardian Australia: There is a history of stereotypes being continued by lily-white the authors and very, exceedingly reductive narrations. Beings are just generally much more cautious of that.
Musa supposes grey scribes should read, support and promote the operational activities of the novelists of emblazon before attempting to encroach on that cavity themselves, if that is something they want to do. But he admits he experiences the issue difficult; the suggestion that writers shouldnt move outside the boundaries of their own experiences comes into direct conflict with what he sees as the purpose of fiction: to empathise with and understand other families lives.
If youre going to write from someone elses perspective, Musa says, its important to shun stereotypes, especially if you want to move the specific characteristics rich and flawed as a good character should be.
Australian columnist Maxine Beneba Clarke. There are two schools of thought about[ culture appropriation] I dont know what the answer is but I can understand both views. Photograph: Nicholas Walton-Healey
Musa has his own experience of writing across the cultural subdivide. His first novel, Here Come The Dogs, was told from the perspective of a reference with a Samoan background. Musa answers consenting criticism is a crucial part of this process: There will be people who will tell you that maybe you didnt quite get this right, and you just have to cop that flack.
Maxine Beneba Clarke is an Australian-based novelist of African-Caribbean descent. Her memoir The Hate Race was prompted by a flow of racial insult; her accumulation of short narratives, Foreign Soil, was published to great acclaim after she won the Victorian Premiers Literary award for anunpublished manuscript in 2013. I think there are two situations in which Ive written outside of the African diaspora, she mentions. In both cases the latter are parts of short fiction and the process of writing them took several years, simply because of that consultation.
Beneba Clarke conceives consultation is all-important, but so is examining your own impulse to write from the perspective of another. What does it mean to be a writer “whos not” national minorities writer and wanting to change your literature? How do you do that? I think that was the opportunity for conversation that was missed[ in Shrivers speech] … How do we feel about writing each others stories and how do we go about it? Whats the respectful practice to go about it?
In some ways it comes down to personal ethics, she answers. Whether you feel you are doing no damage; whether you feel you are doing it sensitively; and, I believe, whether the publisher or the reader been agreed that you have done it sensitively.
Helen Young from the University of Sydney English department speaks fiction can have a very real impact on marginalised people. Individual journals have an impact on individual lives, but representation overall composes a seat and an environment in which people can feel like its OK to be who they are.
The politics of representation is a huge question in the science fiction and fantasy worlds very, speaks Young. This was exemplified by the recent expeditions against a comprehended leftwing bias in the Hugo gifts, in which disgruntled rightwing science fiction and fantasy columnists bickered the awards were being diminished by what the hell is experienced as the tendency of voters to opt studies simply about racial prejudice and exploitation and the like over traditional swashbuckling adventures.
Referring to the JK Rowling occurrence, Young suggests precisely because imagination is often to be considered as escapist, doesnt symbolize those stories dont stuff, or that authors should not treat different sources of their brainchild with respect. Theyre still the lived, hallowed narrations of living cultures, she supposes. Theyre the beliefs of real parties. So if from a western view you go, oh well, its just myth, I can do whatever I like with it, thats a problem.
Kate Grenville said she find writing Indigenous attributes was beyond her when she wrote The Secret River. Image: Sarah Lee for the Guardian
In some respects, the dirt seems to be changing. When Kate Grenville wrote her highly acclaimed historic romance about colonial Australia, The Secret River, in 2005, she shunned writing from the standpoint of Indigenous characters because she felt it was beyond her. Speaking to Ramona Koval on ABC radio, she alleged: What I didnt want to do was step into the heads of any of the Aboriginal attributes. I think that kind of appropriation … theres been too much of that in our writing. In her tale The Lieutenant, the sequel to The Secret River, nonetheless, Grenville did go into outlining more rounded Indigenous reputations, but only after deep and careful involvement with the historical records upon which her characters were based.
All the writers who spoke to Guardian Australia say they believe that considering the question of cultural appropriation is decisive, but the tenor of that discussion matters. They say that making a mockery of marginalised peoples concerns about image and appropriation does not constitute a constructive debate.
Scott, who has previously suggested a postponement on grey columnists used to describe Indigenous Australia, speaks lily-white columnists could use fiction itself to explore the tension about representation. Even the desire to occupy the consciousness of the other, that can be explored in story.
For Musa, the transformation needs to go beyond volumes: You probably cant have a change in literary culture without a change in the whole culture of the two countries, he says.
On the question of progress, in Australia at least, Beneba Clarke replies: “Theres” two institutions of was just thinking about this: that Australian literature is not diverse enough for Anglo-Australian novelists to be even considering writing from other cultures, and the other school of thought is, well, how do we change literature then, given that most of our writers are Anglo-Australian? Are we locking ourselves into an inevitably whitewashed world of literature?
And I dont really subscribe to either thought; I dont know what the answer is but I can understand both positions. But I think what I perfectly cant understand is disregard for any kind of consultation and an inability to understand when people of colour are outraged.
Such articles has been amended to clarify that the Hugo awardings are voted on by the public.

A Failure To Communicate!
Good day… And a Tub Thumpin’ Thursday to you! I have a different outlook on things today… I don’t want to work, I want to bang on the drum all day! Yes, I’m in one of those moods this morning. Kathy is already at the PBI airport, and will be here when I get home from my infusion today… That is if she doesn’t decide to go shopping when she gets home! HA! Who knows what tomorrow brings, and as the great Johnny Rivers sang: just let tomorrow be… The Gin Blossoms greet me this morning with their song: Hey Jealousy… Back in the 90’s, when I was much younger, I saw the Gin Blossoms, along with Cracker, and Thin Lizzy… You couldn’t get me at that concert venue now, if you gave me tickets!
Well, the triple-witching day is here, but, it appears that a lot of the problems that could arise from the brew that included some bat wings and eye of newt, the witches were preparing, has been watered down… 1. Former FBI Director, Comey’s testimony will have already had his prepared words released to the public yesterday, and it appears that he will NOT say that the President put pressure on him to drop the investigation regarding Russia and Flynn…. 2. As I said yesterday, all the drama of the U.K. election that’s going on right now, had been removed, and it appeared that PM May’s party will retain a majority of the seats… and 3. The European Central Bank (ECB) meeting is going on right now, and nothing is expected that would shake up the markets, so… everyone was fretting, sweating, and leaving lots of sawdust on the floor, about today, and it most likely will turn out to be a dud!
So, the buying of Gold, yen, and U.S. Treasuries has subsided, for now… The bias to sell dollars has also subsided, but a new bias to buy dollars isn’t in place just yet… For instance, the euro was 1.1250 yesterday morning, and it’s sitting bang on that figure again this morning… And there was good trade data from China last night, so the Global Growth currencies of Australia and New Zealand (A$ and kiwi respectively), added to their values. Not huge moves, mind you, but they added to their values, which is a good thing!
So, speaking of the Chinese trade data that printed last night… The Chinese Trade Surplus for May was $ 40.81 Billion, which was better than the forecasts, and April’s print of $ 38.05 Billion… In addition, I talked yesterday about the Chinese currency reserves, and that report also printed showing that the reserves had increased to $ 3.054 Trillion, VS the previous print of $ 3.030 Trillion.. But looking under the hood here, tells me that most of the gains in the reserves have come about from currency appreciation… I’m told that the outflows of capital from China have started again, and that’s not a good thing, for it will require China to tap these reserves again to defend their currency.
So, the Trade data was good, and the Reserves data not so good… The Global Growth currencies decided to focus on the good, and like I said above, the A$ and kiwi added to their values..
In Brazil yesterday, the interim President, Temer’s trial was adjourned without a vote… Which means there’s more back room deals being done! HA! Seriously, this moves a possible vote to Saturday. I think Temer will be exonerated from these charges that have been brought on him, but… he could still face obstruction of justice and corruption charges… When will the political problems for Brazil go away? It seems like I’ve been talking about Brazilian politics for 5 years now, and quite frankly it’s getting old… The real keeps getting sold, on these political problems and the drop in the price of Oil yesterday didn’t help!
Yes, yesterday morning, I was talking about how the price of Oil had jumped to above the $ 48 handle… But that only lasted as long as it took for the weekly EIA report to print, that showed that oil and gas supplies had jumped much higher last week, and the trap floor sprung open and the price of Oil fell through it, falling all the way down to a $ 46 handle, and it’s barely holding that!
The ECB will end their meeting about the time I hit send on the Pfennig this morning, and then ECB President Mario Draghi, will hold a press conference… I truly don’t expect much this morning except the same-o, same-o, from him about how inflation hasn’t met the ECB’s target, and therefore the accommodation will continue, which means the negative deposit rates and bond buying… UGH!
Gold lost $ 6.80 yesterday to close at $ 1,286.80, and the early morning trading has been going back and forth between a tiny loss and a tiny gain, so I’ll just call it flat this morning! The rumors going around center on a report that will show just how strong China’s demand for physical Gold from Hong Kong was so far this year… I’m reading that there are some analysts and observers that think China’s demand could increase by 50%!
The U.S. Data Cupboard had the Consumer Credit (read debt) for April yesterday, and boy was I shocked to see the number! Consumers only racked up debt of $ 8.2 Billion! Wait! What? How can that be? March’s previous figure of $ 16.4 Billion was revised upward to $ 19.5 Billion!!!!! So, U.S. consumers went from adding debt of $ 19.5 Billion to $ 8.2 Billion in one month? OK, either this data will see a HUGE upward revision next month, OR… We return to the theme of last month, and that is that the U.S. Consumer has “tapped out”…
Which one do you think will end up being true? I think both of them! The number is ripe for an upward revision next month, but it won’t get it anywhere near the average so far this year, which was $ 15 Billion per month.. But if this isn’t proof that the U.S. consumer has “tapped out” then I’m a monkey’s uncle! HA! Remember that saying? I hadn’t heard that one in years, until it popped into my head while I was typing!
Well, did you happen to see or hear or read what former Fed Minneapolis President, Narayana Kocherlakota, had to say yesterday? Well, if you didn’t, then get a load of this! Kocherlakota said in an interview with MarketWatch that the Fed should NOT hike rates in June, and should grow, NOT cut the balance sheet, until inflation hits their 2% target. I bet those words won’t play well in the Eccles Building (The Fed’s HQ)… There goes his invitation to the Christmas Party too! HA! But in essence, isn’t what he’s saying correct? It’s like this as far as I’m concerned: The Fed set the guidelines for cutting rates and unwinding their balance sheet… It was a strong employment rate, and 2% inflation… The Fed has now hiked rates 3 times and inflation, as calculated by the PCE (Personal Consumption Expenditures) had never reached 2%, much less stayed there! And as far as the employment thing is concerned, I don’t know how the Fed members can sleep at night, when more than 90 Million Americans still don’t have jobs and have given up looking for one!
So, what we have here is a failure to communicate… They didn’t say, “well, if we only reach one of the two targets, we’re going to start hiking rates and unwinding the balance sheet” NO! They said, that when the two targets are reached they will begin to hike rates and unwind the balance sheet! And their forecasts for stronger inflation doesn’t count! Just because they see inflation higher in the future, doesn’t count for now! And besides since when does the Fed nail their forecasts bang on? Remember green shoots? Remember, Bernanke telling us that there was no widespread problem with Subprime Loans? Or how long now have they been saying that “by the end of the year, we will see stronger growth”? Only to not see it, at least for any sustaining period to time… So… in the end, I’m with Kocherlakota on this one!
Oh, and if you want to read the whole article / interview with Kocherlakota on MarketWatch, click here: http://www.marketwatch.com/story/kocherlakota-says-fed-shouldnt-hike-rates-in-june-and-it-should-grow-not-cut-the-balance-sheet-2017-06-07?siteid=nwtam
To recap… The triple-witching day is here, and it appears it has already been watered down, for the U.K. election, according to the bookies, is all but over but for the shouting, and PM May’s party will retain a majority of the seats. All the election drama is over here… In addition, former FBI Director, Comey, released his prepared statements yesterday ahead of time, and there’s no smoking gun here, and finally, the ECB is meeting and there’s nothing that’s going to come of that except the same-o, same-o… “Oh woe is us, we have no inflation”… Of course the folks over at the Bundesbank in Germany are singing a different song! So, the safe haven assets of Gold, yen and Treasuries all have backed off their lofty figures of yesterday. China’s Trade Surplus grew in May, and the Global Growth campers were dancing in the streets!
For What It’s Worth… I have a Pfennig Reader, who also writes his own markets letter each day, and has it out by 7 am… He calls it the Sevens Report… He’s a former stock guy, but has a great handle on everything that goes on in the markets, and yesterday, he did a little “Bonds 101” and I liked it so much, I asked him if I could use it… And well, he said yes, since that’s what this is all about today!… Anyway, the Sevens Report can be found here: www.sevensreport.com here you can sign up for a free two week trial, but after that, it’ll cost to continue…
And here’s the Bonds 101 piece… enjoy! “In the bond market, everything trades off a spread to Treasuries, and Treasuries price off expectations for 1. Growth, 2 inflation and 3. Future interest rate levels. Point being, there are less variables in the bond markets and the markets is more liquid. That equals more efficiency.
Right now, that more efficient market is screaming that future economic growth and inflation will be disappointing, and that the Fed is going to hike rates, regardless.
The disappointing economic growth and inflation can be extrapolated from the decline in the 10 and 30-year Treasury yields. The fall because markets expect lower longer-term economic growth and inflation, which equates to a lower rise in interest rates over the longer term. After a brief bump in late ’16, 10 and 30-year yields are telling us that the slow-growth economy is here to say. (so around 2% GDP growth)
However, the short end of the curve (2-year yields) are saying that right now, the Fed will continue to hike rates.
Think of it this way: From 2015 to 2016, earnings growth was flat and stocks went nowhere and volatility was high. Then, last year, earnings growth started to be re-vised higher, and stocks have rallied. If the bond market is right about economic growth prospects and interest rate hikes, then that will hit expected earnings growth, and stocks will fall.” – Tom Essaye from the Sevens Report
Chuck again… Tom and I are on the same page with regards to why we watch the bond market… It’s a better predictor of future 1. Economic growth 2.inflation and 3. Interest rates…
Currencies today 6/8/17… American Style: A$ .7550, kiwi .7207, C$ .7405, euro 1.1250, sterling 1.2983, Swiss $ .9663, … European Style: rand 12.8720, krone 8.4787, SEK 8.7036, forint 274.14, zloty 3.7420, koruna 23.2712, RUB 56.67, yen 109.89, sing 1.3821, HKD 7.7964, INR 64.34, China 6.7939, peso 18.24, BRL 3.2755, Dollar Index 96.78, Oil $ 46.04, 10yr 2.19%, Silver $ 17.63, Platinum $ 946.92, Palladium $ 847.00, Gold $ 1,287.50, and SGE Gold… $ 1,297.64
That’s it for today… Another 7th inning debacle by the Cardinals last night.. I pin ½ of this one the manager who took his starter, who was cruising along, out of the game in the 6th, knowing all too well, how badly this middle relief has been this year… And well, the $ 30 Million dollar man we signed in the offseason, blew the game once again… I’m getting this out the door early today, hopefully that is, because I have to show up at the infusion center right out of the starting blocks this morning. I prefer to get this over with early in the day, before things get backed up and crazy there, and… the sooner I get it taken care of the sooner I’ll feel better tomorrow! Sometimes the lights all shining on me, other times I can barely see. Lately it occurs to me, what a long strange trip it’s been… yes, that’s the words of Jerry Garcia, and while I was never really a BIG Grateful Dead fan, I love those words… That how I feel right now… More on that tomorrow, but for now, we’re going to let tomorrow be… Seals and Crofts take us to the finish line today with their very apropos song: We May Never Pass This Way Again… OK, I won’t be joining you today, but please go out and do some Tub Thumpin’ for me! And Be Good To Yourself.. Bye~

Bye~
