What seems like a very long time ago, but is actually not, Guillermo del Toro gave me, what is to me, a very large sum of money.

I have had kind of a rough time lately. Suffering from years of chronic back pain, I decided in the summer of 2017 to finally suck it up and invest the time and doctor’s appointments it would take to figure out what I needed to do about it. I had a costly MRI. The news was not great. I had a bulging thoracic disk, which is the hardest kind to treat, and degenerated disks below that. There was no rhyme or reason to the diagnosis. I had never played sports or had a major traumatic injury. I had steroid and diagnostic pain shots to see if this could be helped. This was only the beginning.

Late in September, in the midst of the back saga, I found a knot on my throat. Most people might not have, but I have a skin care regiment that includes my neck. It no longer looked or felt right, though others looking or feeling couldn’t really tell. This was another stress and expense I didn’t need, but after a year where I live now, I finally found a GP. She concurred that something was off, and ordered an ultrasound and blood work. Blood work was normal, but the ultrasound revealed several nodules, one of them a fairly large two and a half centimeters, on my thyroid. I was sent to the local ENT, and while he felt that the presence of multiple nodules was a good sign it wasn’t cancer, he couldn’t be sure without an ultrasound guided biopsy.

The biopsy was booked for December 14th, and since my insurance had been paying every penny of the tests and treatments for not only my back (with the exception of office visit co-pays), but my initial ultrasound for my thyroid, I wasn’t really worried about it costing me much out of pocket, if anything.

When the hospital called to pre-register me for the biopsy, they informed me my deductible had not been met, despite over $4000 of back treatments, and my cost for the procedure would be $937.80.

I’ll probably have that number stuck in my head for the rest of my life. I was angry and frustrated, because I thought surely my deductible had been met since it turned over in September. But the only thing I know for sure is I will never understand how insurance works, and the arbitrary way they decide what you pay for and what you don’t.

This was a major issue because I live paycheck to paycheck, and at the time I had less than $200 in my savings account. There was no way I was going to be able to make that kind of money in the five days before the procedure. No one I know has that kind of money to lend me. I was stressed and exhausted, because the nerve ablation I had had on December 6th that was supposed to finally alleviate my back pain was causing me to have severe muscle spasms in the thoracic region, which I had to work through sitting up straight at a desk eight hours a day in customer service. I was broke, I was lost, and I didn’t know what to do. I just felt I had to have the biopsy, because I had ovarian cancer when I was sixteen, and I know the terror of your cells turning against you. I wouldn’t be able to relax at all until I was sure that whatever I had was benign.

So I did what I never wanted to have to do, and I opened a Go Fund Me December 12th, fairly sure I wouldn’t be able to raise and withdraw the money in time. Over that Tuesday, it slowly grew with the help of friends and family, most of whom I knew weren’t in much better boats than I was. But I was grateful for them being willing to do what they could. The next day I had to call and reschedule the appointment, which ended up being on January 4th. I had been hoping to get the biopsy done and get a result before Christmas. That wasn’t going to happen now.

Donations steadily came in, and by Wednesday night of the 13th, I was close to having half of what I would need. It was about 8:30 p.m., and I was on my couch watching A Muppet Christmas Carol when an alert came through on my phone. It said I had received a $665 donation from a donor by the name of Guillermo del Toro. My heart was racing a million miles an hour. I had asked for $937.80 knowing that I would have to make up for the bit that GFM takes out, but I could deal with that. This donation brought me up to $1000 even. I immediately closed it to donations, and hit the withdraw button before anyone could change their mind. After GFM’s two percent, this gave me $967, which was enough for the biopsy, with $30 left over, which was the exact cost of the copay for the results appointment with the ENT.

Oh. And how funny someone used Guillermo del Toro’s name to donate to me. How random that someone would do that, because it couldn’t actually be him.

I called my mom to tell her that the campaign had been met, in less than 48 hours, with slightly more than for what I had asked. We were both soundly skeptical about the donor name, and I went to bed joking about the Guillermo del Toro Christmas Miracle on Facebook.

But when I woke up the next morning, I found that it had been a Guillermo del Toro Christmas Miracle. My friend, Monica, who lives in Guadalajara Mexico, where del Toro is from, had asked him to retweet my campaign just to reach more people through his followers. She didn’t tell me she was going to do this, it’s just the kind of person she is. So she had the idea to ask several celebrities to share the link, but it never happened. He just tweeted her back, in Spanish, “It is paid.”

I don’t know why he did it. I don’t know him, except through his work, and he doesn’t know me at all. Maybe he was just feeling generous that night. Maybe he did it because my friend was a fellow countryman. I don’t know. I have pondered it and struggled with it. Why did I deserve his help above any other who might have asked? What made him do such a kind thing for a perfect stranger?

I like to imagine that he is a good person, though I don’t know him. People speak very highly of him who have worked with and met him, so I believe that’s a good sign. I sent him an email through the GFM site, and I tweeted him a thank you for good measure. I told him that I hoped his blessings came back tenfold for what he had done for me. His movie, The Shape of Water, is now nominated for thirteen Oscars. Coincidence, I’m sure, but a most deserved one even so.

A day or two after the donation, it went briefly viral. Monica and I were interviewed for a few Spanish language outlets in Mexico and Latin America, and I was even interviewed for my local news here in College Station, Texas. For a few weeks after, we started popping up in English articles online, and all of this is by far the weirdest thing to ever happen to me. No one could reach Mr. del Toro for comment for any of them, so I don’t know if he was aware, or just didn’t care to give an explanation. I’m not sure how the online “press” catches onto these things. I thought it would just be a cool story I told family and friends, but it became a little more.

It is a humbling and frightening thing to consider yourself so independent, and then to have to ask for help when you hit a wall you can’t get through yourself. What I’ve learned is that it’s not weakness to ask for help when you’re really down. Whether it’s financially, or just someone’s time and attention for things you can no longer mentally handle on your own. You won’t always be saved by a world famous movie director, of course, but the thing here is you never know who is going to help you. There are good people from all walks of life who will be there for you. All you have to do is ask and have faith that putting yourself out there is the right thing to do.

I finally had my biopsy on January 4th, and my follow up on January 15th. Much to my relief, they found nothing suspicious, and for now all I have to do is monitor. I’ll go back in a year for an ultrasound to see if anything has changed, and I might not avoid surgery forever, but I have peace of mind now that it’s nothing to worry about.

I have my friends, family, and, surprisingly, Guillermo del Toro to thank for that. While I know that I can never repay them, I hope to keep paying it forward to others in their honor.

Ryodan:

Sitting off on the sidelines as they took Whicked into the x-ray suite seemed to take forever. Too many things rattled around in my mind. One of which was how long it was going to take for me to get out of here and over to Caldwell First Bank. Not that I was rushing the process. I would stay as long as Whicked needed me. There was no way in hell I was going to leave her side, until she was good and ready. But, I was envisioning myself walking into that bank and pummeling that manager. The whole plan was forming as I sat there waiting. I would walk into the bank, ask for the manager, and when he came up to help me, I would ask him if he remembered Whicked. Then, as recognition lit in his eyes, I would introduce my fist to his face. He would be bloodied beyond recognition before I would stop. Sure, he would recover from the wounds, but he wouldn’t forget the beating anytime soon. Then, once I was able to talk Whicked into reporting him, he would have to face the races’ justice, as well. Justice will come around twice for this scumbag.

A grin washed over my features as I thought more about the details, just as Whicked was wheeled out of one room and into another. The nurse let me know that the MRI was complete and now they were just bringing her in to get a few x-rays. Once the x-rays were done, they would bring us back down to the private room to wait for the results.

Whicked:

I was wheeled from room to room to endure test after test, ��needle after needle. I no longer cared about the pain, the drugs they had given me had taken care of that. The noise from the MRI hurt my already fragile head, the sounds seeming to penetrate my very skull, so I tried to focus on something happier, times when I had been happier, but all that kept going through my head as I lay here in the dark, was his weight on me; his hands grabbing at me; his foul breath huffing in my ear as he thrust away like a grunting pig. Panic overwhelmed me and my breathing became erratic, just in time for them to wheel me out, the nurse hovered over me and whispered kind words till my heart rate dropped to something more like normal before she wheeled me out and into x-ray.

At least the x-ray was less constricting and quiet. The tech just did the job, guiding my wrist gently into place so he could see where the breaks were, a quick shot of my head to confirm the breaks in my cheekbones and nose, as if the swelling wouldn't be a dead giveaway! I couldn’t imagine how bad I looked but if it was as bad as I felt, it would be pretty horrific, but once I got a chance to feed, I would heal just fine and no-one would ever know what had happened to me except Ryodan, Havers and his staff but at least they were bound by some sort of oath not to break patient confidentiality, right? They couldn't just call the police without checking with me first, I was sure of that.

As they wheeled me back into the room where Ryodan had been left waiting, I yawned, the skin stretched so tight over my swollen broken face my mouth barely opened and the pain just registered through the pain meds. Right now, I just wanted to go home and change out of this hospital gown, put on my softest PJs and climb into bed and sleep. Hopefully Dr. Havers would be able to give me the all clear once my x-rays came back.

Ryodan:

I jumped up as they wheeled Whicked in. It was as if the MRI and x-ray made her look ten times worse, but I knew it was just all the injuries settling in. I just hoped they hadn’t walked her past any mirrors. She would be horrified if she knew how bad she looked.

“Hey there, Half-Pint.” I offered with a small smile. “Shouldn’t be much longer now. The nurse said that they just need to have Havers take a look at the films and we should be good to go.”

The nurse led us down the long hallway, back to the room where Whicked had her initial exam. As we cornered in through the door, a ginormous male stood from one of the chairs inside. “Annalee.” He said, as he nodded to Whicked.

Instantly, I put my body between her and this male, a snarl exploding from my lips. I didn’t know who he was and didn’t care. Nor did I care that he probably had 100 pounds on me. My protective instincts were kicking in and I was ready to go however many rounds it would take with this male to let him know he wasn’t getting near, Whicked.

The guy just snickered. “Cute.” Looking around my body, he continued. “Annalee, we are transferring you to our medical suite. Havers is a great doctor, but ours are better. I’ve got your stuff all packed up. Let’s go.”

Staying between Whicked and this male, I let him move past me to the hall before turning back to Whicked.

Whicked:

I offered Ryodan a small smile as he greeted me before joining my escort back to the intake room we had been in before. I looked up to my cousin and lifted my arm with the unbroken wrist to clasp his huge hand within my dainty cold one. I needed his warmth, these hospital gowns only protected your modesty.

As we wheeled around the corner and into my room, Ry led the way and suddenly his demeanor changed, his stance went from relaxed to aggressive and a growl filled the room. Oh my Scribe, had Marcus found me here? Was he here to silence me? As the nurse pushed me into the room, I could see a huge Male stand up from where he had been sitting in the corner. As he stood up he picked up a bag from the floor. With only the slightly blurred eyesight of one eye I couldn’t quite make out who it was who was stood there until I heard his voice. As I heard my birth name fall from his mouth, I relaxed. Vishous? I uttered a laugh, I was dreaming! This was all a dream, I had fallen asleep in the MRI or on my way back from x-ray. There was no way that Vishous would be here or that he would be moving me anywhere. The King made it clear that he wanted nothing to do with me, so why would that change now?

I waved over to Ryodan and gestured him to come closer, once he stood next to me I grasped his forearm and tugged him down to me and whispered. “That’s Vishous, he doesn’t like me very much. But that’s ok cos I don’t care!” I let Ryodan go and swung my head toward the doorway in which Vishous stood. “Lets go V-Man, take me to your leader!” I giggled a little at that. Damn these drugs were pretty good. “This is just a dream anyways..but before we go, could I get a coat or a sweater or something because I am freezing!”

Ryodan:

Another male came in with a wheelchair and once again I placed myself firmly between Whicked and this new male. “Hold on a minute. Who the fuck is Vishous and why are we going with him? Not to mention that he’s supposedly taking us to /his/ medical suite? Whicked, you’ve gone and lost your mind. There is no other medical suite for over 200 miles.”

All I could imagine was that this bank manager had found out that Whicked came to Havers and was going to make sure she didn’t talk. Was this guy connected to the mafia, or something? That would make these two thugs. Well… screw it. I’ve never been up against worse, but I’m sure I could hold my own.

I pushed the chair back at the second male and planted my feet in his way. “The only way you’re taking her is through me. Who’s first?”

Vishous just grinned.

Whicked:

I shuffled to the edge of the bed and eased myself off with the help of the Nurse as Ry and Vishous squared off against each other, with Ry directly in front of me, blocking my view of V and whoever just wheeled in a wheelchair.

I gave an impatient sigh, surely in my dream Ryodan wouldn't be so inquisitive, but I put that down to my medication. I hobbled over to Ryodan’s side and put a gentle hand on his shoulder. “Vishous meet Ryodan, my cousin and tonight my guardian. Ry, meet Vishous, a member of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, bodyguard to our King and all around asshole. Vishous is mated to the lovely Doc Jane, she has a medical suite at the King’s compound somewhere in Caldwell, and if V wants me to go to the compound that’s fine with me, but I just hope he realises my insurance wont cover the costs!”

I hobbled over past Vishous and into the waiting wheelchair, the Male at the handles waiting to steer me out of here was none other than Blaylock, the charming red head who had looked after me after I had saved the King. “Hey there Blaylock, wanna get me outta here already before those two start trading blows? I have had enough of violence for one night”. My mind was so clouded by whatever painkillers Havers had given me, that this whole thing seemed so normal, that of course the Brotherhood would come here and demand a civilian be taken to their top secret compound to be treated. But when I woke up I would be curled up, nice and safe in my apartment with Alanna in the next room and Ryodan on the couch and all would be well and I could start putting this shitty nightmare behind me.

Ryodan:

Whicked’s hand registered on my shoulder, but I didn’t move. I barely flinched when she mentioned the Black Dagger Brotherhood, part of me being in shock. Surely she was joking. Either way, she obviously knew the two males that had just shown up. It wasn’t until she explained the medical suite at the King’s compound that it all sunk in. Black? Dagger? Brotherhood? When and how did Whicked meet the Brotherhood? And, why were they so interested in her that they wanted her treated at the King’s compound?

I shoved past Vishous, giving him a good knock with my shoulder as I passed, and ran to stop the wheel chair. I could hear a deep rumble of a growl from behind me and knew it was Vishous, but didn’t care.

Each hand on either side of the wheelchair, I stopped Whicked and the other male pushing her. Standing up, I crossed my arms in front of my chest. “She’s in no state to be making decisions for herself. If you’re taking her, I’m going with.”

Vishous, who having had a chance to turn around and catch up with us, walked up to me and got right in my face. Without turning to look at her, he just responded with an, “Annalee?”

Whicked:

Why was Ryodan being so possessive of me, it wasn’t like V or Blaylock was going to harm me, I was probably safer with them than I would be anywhere else. I looked up in time to watch Ryodan stop the wheelchair I was being wheeled around in before once more standing off against the two Males. Questioning my decision making skills. “Ry, it's fine, I want to go with them, I will be safe with them. They won’t hurt me, I know they won’t”.

My body slumped in my chair, a wave of exhaustion washed over me and I felt a slight flicker of pain from my face as I turned to watch what was going on. Maybe this wasn’t really a dream after all…?

I groaned inwardly as Vishous called me Annalee again, I swear if if I had the strength to do it I would give him a swift kick in the balls, or at least I would try to but his reflexes have to be pretty sharp I doubt my foot would get anywhere near his junk. “Yes Vishous?” I answered sweetly ignoring the urge to get out of my chair*

Ryodan:

Whicked’s response didn’t settle my nerves. She was so hopped up on all the drugs that Havers had been feeding her, I was beginning to wonder if she even knew where she was. Taking a cue from Vishous, I responded to her, without taking my eyes off him, not backing down. “Do you have any idea how many drugs you have running through your system, right now?”

Vishous replied to Whicked before she had a chance to respond to me, still. “Your defender, over here, says he isn’t letting you go without him. That’s your call, not his.”

“Are you fucking kidding me?!” I reached up to shove him and my face was on the floor before I even had a chance to realize it. I was shocked at how fast he had reacted, but even more so at how pinned my body was. My fingers and toes were about the only things on my body that could remotely move. This fucker was quickly turning into one of my least favorite people.

Whicked:

*I rolled my eyes at the macho show of aggression being laid down before me. With a groan I gingerly pulled myself up and onto my feet, ignoring the fussing of Blaylock behind me as he tried to usher me back into the chair. I inched closer to where Ryodan was currently lying, buried beneath the huge pissed off Male that is Vishous.*

“Seriously? For fuck sake quit it! Vishous get the hell off of my cousin, where I go, he goes. Understood!” *next I turned my anger to Ryodan without even blinking* “Ry, quit acting like you are my Father, I know these Males and yes, I realise that I am under the influence of whatever cocktail that Havers has given me but you don’t know the full story because until tonight, I haven't seen you in years! Now, don’t get me wrong, I totally appreciate that the Scribe sent you to me tonight of all nights but if you could just dial down the possessive Male shit, I would really appreciate it!”

*As I finished my little rant, the colour drained completely from my face and I stumbled backwards, my legs turning to jelly under me and threatening to spill me over, luckily Blaylock was there in an instant with the chair and settled it under me just before I collapsed. I took a few deep breaths trying to clear the little black dots from my vision which caused a sliver of pain to slice through my head* “Blay, can we just get out of here and leave these two asshats to their smackdown?”

Blaylock chuckled and gave a Yes Ma’am before he turned the wheelchair back out into the corridor and we began to make our way down to the underground garage where I was sure the SUV that had taken me to the compound before was now parked, ready to take me back there once more, only this time I would be the patient.*

Ryodan:

Like her father?! Not seen me in years? She hadn’t seen me in years because her family had written me off, just like everyone else in my family, due to me being a bastard and half-human. It was amazing how quickly you find out who your true family and friends are when shit gets real. If that was the way she really felt, I had half a mind to just turn around and go home, once this asshat got off of me. But, I was too concerned for Whicked to just leave her alone with these two males. Obviously, she knew them, but they weren’t family, and they weren’t close to her, either. They were more acquaintances, then anything. Otherwise, the one wouldn’t be calling her by her real name. Even I knew better than to call her Annalee.

As the second male that Whicked referred to as Blaylock wheeled her down the hall, Vishous thrust one last shove into the back of my chest, even though I didn’t think he could’ve put any more pressure on me. “You and me, we ain’t done. Feel me?” He snarled in my ear as he backed off my body. Then he left me to pick myself up off the ground, which at that point was like picking jelly off the floor with a fork.

After a few minutes, I caught up to them at the door to the garage. Blaylock was helping Whicked into the black Escalade. I stepped around to the other side and let myself in beside her.

As we drove the winding back roads through Caldwell, my view of the back of Vishous’ head wasn’t doing much for my mood. It was all I could do from keeping the bastard in me from reaching around the back of that chair and putting him in a chokehold. However my ego had already taken enough of a hit today. So, instead I turned my gaze out the window and speculated on where these two goons were taking us and just how was it that Whicked knew the Black Dagger Brotherhood. #BoysWillBeBoys #EternallyBoundRP

*I am a physician anesthesiologist who has suffered from chronic pain for several years. I have seen many doctors who have not been able to put a complete picture together of my various pain issues. I feel so fortunate that my internist sent me to see Dr. Attaman. He is so thorough in taking a complete medical history, doing a thorough physical exam, and ordering appropriate diagnostic tests to aid him in evaluating a patient’s problems. His bedside manner is excellent. He is compassionate and takes time to explain everything. He asks the patient if he/she understands. He is excellent at injections. I have gotten so much relief already. Unfortunately, many physicians today seem to have lost the art of the practice of medicine. The true meaning of the Hippocratic Oath seems to be disappearing. That is why Dr. Attaman is such a gem and a find for any patient with chronic pain issues. He is kind as well as clinically excellent. *I’m a physician and wanted to write a review as a patient of Dr. Attaman’s this past year. I had been having lower back and sacral pain for about 10 years but due to a busy schedule had never gotten it checked out. I knew it wasn’t life threatening and that I didn’t need surgery. But just wanted to finally address the pain in as noninvasive means as possible. I was trained in the MD track (as opposed to Dr. Attaman’s DO track) and know the limitations of training in my field. We are not taught osteopathic manipulation, and I think the DO training in the musculoskeletal system is in general, stronger. I did see an orthopedic doctor who told me I didn’t need surgery, but could not offer much in the way of diagnosis or treatment. So I specifically sought out Dr. Attaman’s expertise because of his DO background and further training in anesthesiology and pain management. I wanted someone who was capable of doing osteopathic manipulation, but also aware of the care needed in doing a safe manipulation. I brought my medical records and recent films, and he diagnosed and treated me the same day. I have never had an osteopathic manipulation, but about 75% of my pain was addressed with that first treatment. I like that his treatment options are varied, from physical therapy and massage, up to to injections. I was finally able to go to physical therapy because he was able to diagnose my issue. I can’t promise that everyone will have the same results as I did, but I was very pleased with my overall experience with Dr. Attaman. He took the time to make an accurate diagnosis, used precautions by reviewing films, explained to me what he thought the issue was, offered effective and diverse treatment options, and was very professional. His office is very pleasant and staff are also very friendly and extremely helpful. I have since moved from Seattle but wanted to post this because my experience was so positive. *Dr. Attaman is such a blessing. He takes the time to review the history of what the problem is, prior treatments, and is very thorough and precise in identifying the “pain generators”. He then takes the time to map out a specific plan to help and answers all questions. He also does every procedure himself. Even if he is teaching someone else, he does the procedure himself. He is very respectful and mindful of my dignity and treats me as a partner in my healthcare and talks to me not at me. My pain has markedly improved with his help. I have referred several of my coworkers to him. His office does have a policy of not “inviting” patients back who miss an appointment without proper notification. I think this is because he is very much sought after and if you’re scheduled for an appointment and don’t show then you’ve taken up space from someone else who could use his help. However, they email and/or call to remind you of the appointment so really, be respectful and responsible and either cancel or show up. I recommend him whole-heartedly! *I have suffered from chronic neck and shoulder pain for over 10 years. Tried all sort of doctors, chiropractors, acupuncture, everything you can imagine. After explaining all my symptoms, all different type of treatments and medicines I tried in the past, he suggested that could be related to a not very common condition involving nerve constriction by my muscles, he ordered several MRIs and X-rays to verify the condition. I was impressed by the level of detail he went through to make sure this was the root of my problems. I am in the middle of my treatment and so far it’s been night and day. I cannot think of anybody else more qualified and knowledgeable than Dr. Attaman to treat these type of issues.* -A.G.

*I worked many years as a Registered Nurse. I ruptured a disc, had surgery, went back to work for a year and then ruptured three more discs and have had disabling back problems including pain and spasms ever since. *I have been dealing with neck/shoulder pain for over 2 years. I have been to two surgeons, acupuncture, a massage therapist, a chiropractor, and other pain management specialist. I wanted to find someone who could diagnose my issue and finally be on the path to a pain free life! Dr. Attaman was fabulous and I would recommend him to anyone who is suffering from pain! Prior to going to him I got an MRI, two nerve root blocks in my C5, a trigger point injection, cortisone shots, the list goes on! What was found in my MRI was a small bone spur on my C5 and I was told by the surgeons they could remove it and fuse my C5 to my C6 (ACDF surgery). I felt I was much to young and kept trying to find someone who was willing to be less invasive but yet still be free of pain. They said some people have bone spurs and don’t feel pain so I wasn’t willing to have major surgery that may not fix my issue.Dr. Attaman looked at everything and really listened to where my pain was and heard everything I had done to try and fix myself. I really thought at this point everyone thought I was crazy for being in pain and yet nothing was working. I didn’t want to take pills every day or have icy/hot patches, ice packs, etc.. just to be able to work and live my life. After two trials to numb my nerves (C5-C7), the pain finally went away and then he burned my nerves on the third time. I was in a bit of pain afterwards but I could tell it was a different pain. A surgery pain and not the pain I had before. I have to say 3 weeks later and I am pain free! There is still a little sensitivity but nothing compared to what I have been dealing with since 2010. *I first went to Dr. Attaman for a pain management consultation, because I was having very severe pain in my lower back as a result of disk degeneration problems. I had already seen my primary care doctor and two other pain specialists. I decided to get one additional visit for another opinion, particularly with Dr. Attaman because I read and found out about possible procedures that could be done instead of surgery or cortosone injections. I was impressed with Dr. Attaman from the very first visit. He took the time to fully question me and to review all the medical records I had requested be sent to him. He understood my emotional upset related to the pain that was so intense that I could not sleep and it made it very difficult for me to do my work. He stated that my type of problem could best be helped by a procedure that would actually burn the nerves in that area of the back so that the pain could be reduced significantly. The process was arduous, including three procedures on each side of my lower back, the first two (on each side) being diagnostic probes to locate the actual source of the pain. Once that was accomplished, I then had the main procedure done on each side. Over a period of weeks from the time the procedure was done, my pain level went from a 10 down to a near 0 on both sides of my back. Needless to say, I am very grateful to this experienced and skillful doctor, and would recommend anyone with a similar back problem to consult with him to see if what he offers could truly make a difference in quality of life. *After many years of back pain, I finally got a GOOD dr who sent me to see Dr Attaman. I had tried everything from chiropractors to physical therapy and everything in between. *Dr. Attaman worked wonders for me. I had a series of muscles spasms occur throughout almost 14 years. The spasms would occur when I shivered from the cold, or when I stretched my upper torso too far. Years later, the spasms progressed. Then the spasms triggered after exercise. With the procedure done by Jason G Attaman, not only can I get stretch my upper torso, and exercise, I HAVE MY GOLF SWING BACK! The weather outside was very chilly this winter, and I may have shivered in the cold, and from then on (after procedure), no acute muscle spasms. The spasms used to stop me in my tracks. When the muscle spams triggered, I couldn’t move, couldn’t breathe, and couldn’t talk because the pain was so excruciating. Now, I am pain-free and pain medication-free and steroid-free. *I was referred by my primary physician to Dr. Attaman after a serious fall. I had arthritis in my lower back, a herniated disc and complete numbness in both of my buttocks and partial lower back and leg. I was in terrible pain. Dr. Attaman performed a rhizotomy on both sides of my lower back. The pain is gone and has not returned this was done in 2011. Because of the arthritis I had suffered lower back pain since my early twenties, after wards no lower back pain. He gave me several steroid injections for the disc to reduce inflammation and I regained some feeling in my buttocks. After these injections the pain subsided in that area. In 2012 I herniated another disc and did require surgery, which I believe will be fine after physical therapy. Dr. Attaman recommended my surgeon, Dr. Jayashree Srinivasan who is the best. After having been a patient at his office for almost 2 years now, I can honestly say he is one of the most caring and compassionate Doctors I have ever seen. His staff was accommodating to our schedule. *My wife has had long term back pain that felt like her back was on fire. After telling our old Primary Care Physician, she was sent to a pain specialist to see if they could help her. After about 6 appointments with this specialist she still had the same back pain as if it was on fire. After we got a new Primary Care Physician, she sent us to Dr. Attaman to see if he could help. After talking to her, he had determined that she had problems in her hips and her lower back. After doing the procedures on her hips, it was the first time in years that she was able to sleep on her side. Dr. Attaman then started working on her back. After injecting Lidocaine in the nerves in her back to insure that he had the correct nerves, he did the first what he called a Nerve Melt in her right side, she has had no pain and now he has started the left side. I hope that she has the same results as the first. She has use less pain pills and we hope that she will not need them. During the procedures, Dr. Attaman explained everything that he was doing. I was with my wife when she had one of the procedures on her hip and Dr. Attaman explained to me what he was doing and showed me how he guided the needle into the area that he was going to inject the pain medication into. *I went to Dr. Attaman because my tendons and ligaments were stretched from an accident that occured more than 40 years ago. The result is that my ulna bone in my left wrist slides out unexpectedly from time to time, sending me in agonizing pain to the emergency room where I have to be anesthestized before they put it back in its socket. I hear that Dr. Attaman did a fairly new therapy where he injects your own red platelets into the affected area and that, in turn, can help tighten the loose ligaments and tendons. I had the procedure done in January of this year. There’s no telling if everything has tightened enough to prevent another dislocation but, for now, all is well. The reason I’m writing this review is that Dr. Attaman and his staff were very friendly, compassionate, and accomodating. They tried very hard to make me feel comfortable and answer my many questions.
