This is so difficult, because nobody (and I mean nobody) wants to discuss sex with their mom. Fortunately, you’re over the hurdle of having to tell her that you’re having sex, she already knows that you’re sexually active. What you’re looking for is a discussion with her about safe sex so that she feels confident in your ability to take care of yourself. I would also advise you to leave your dad out of the conversation for now, and you can even say that you don’t feel comfortable discussing things with him. This will let her know that you’re going to be honest and candid with her.

1. Start by saying something along the lines of: “Look, we both know that I’m sexually active, but I want to be safe and take care of my body.”

2. Ask if she can help you make an appointment to see an OBGYN. This is something you should be doing once a year if you��re sexually active, it’s essentially a vagina doctor. Asking her to make the appointment reminds her that she is still Mom and helps her feel involved even though she really has absolutely no domain over your vagina.

3. Your mother may get worried if you mention an OBGYN, she may think you’re looking to get birth control. Lots of parents equate birth control with more sex. It’s important that you stress that you’re not looking to get birth control, you just want to make sure that you’re fine down there. She can’t possibly argue with that, they run STI and STD testing and everything.

4. Your mother does not need to be in the room with you during your appointment. If she gets offended you can just tell her that you’re uncomfortable. The doctor will not allow her in the room with you unless you permit it.

5. During your appointment, explain to your OBGYN what is going on and ask if they can help you speak to your mom. They’re not going to actively encourage you to have sex, but they will encourage you to have safe sex, because they realize that you’re going to keep having sex regardless of what they say. Your mom hasn’t realized this yet, and therein lies the problem.

6. The OBGYN will have no problem talking to your mom on your behalf and encouraging additional precautions. Your Mom is waaay more likely to listen to a medical professional who can tell her that people your age are having sex all the time and that it’s no big deal than she is to anything you have to say. Unfortunately.

7. If everything goes well, you can then ask for a prescription to birth control. Say something along the lines of “if I’m going to be having sex, it should be safe sex”.

8. If your mom is really upset and uncomfortable, don’t push the birth control prescription on her. Now she’s heard a medical professional talk she has a lot of thinking to do. I guarantee you that she will eventually come around to the conclusion that you might as well get a birth control prescription because you’re going to keep having sex. She might just need a week or so.

Step Two: The Boyfriend

The goal here is to gradually bring your boyfriend back in the house. You need to start small, like a family dinner, and maybe a couple outings with your family.

1. I would suggest waiting until after your OBGYN appointment to bring this subject up, because your parents need to feel that they can trust you.

2. Say something like “_____ means a lot to me, and if you got to know him you would really like him. Can we please try again?” Suggest a family dinner at your house. He doesn’t need to spend a lot of time with your family, just a couple hours so that your parents can see that he is not the Antichrist and that he’s a good kid who genuinely cares about you.

3. If that goes well (and it probably will) plan another public outing. Is there a movie you want to see? Tell your parents that you and your boyfriend would like to “double date” with them. If you really don’t want to be seen with your parents in public, plan another dinner.

4. After a couple occasions of your parents being around him and seeing that he can keep it in his pants, then they should be okay with him coming over for the day. Don’t push your luck and ask to spend lots of time cooped up in your room with him. Stay out in the open where your parents can keep an eye on you, even if this means sitting in the living room and watching a movie.

5. At this point, your parents should be waaay more comfortable with him being around and he can start to come over more. You will hopefully be on birth control now as well, which is a double plus.

1) Yes, you CAN get HRT if you are agender, but it would also be good for you to do some searching on your state’s policies or your doctor’s policy. Many doctors require that you get a signed letter confirming your identity from a gender therapist in order to take hormones or get surgery, and in order to get such a letter, you might have to actually see said therapist for a certain period of time and have that time verified as well. I might be wrong, but I also believe the time varies from place to place— i’ve heard six months from people and up to two years from others.

2) however, according to the link above, NOT ALL DOCTORS KNOW THIS. They might not be aware (or will find ways to refuse) HRT for you as an agender person. Again, it’s best to check with your health care provider and state laws.

3) Since you’re 18, you don’t have to have parental permission to transition. However, I don’t know about billing for insurance and whether or not your parents will be able to see it. I recommend checking local clinics that provide HRT and emailing or calling them about it. I know that some (not all) Planned Parenthood clinics provide HRT, so this might be a good place to start if there’s one in your area. I’m not sure if it changes for hormones, but they keep things confidential (and often free) for things like STD testing and birth control. I believe it’s the same for doctors as well; you can ask for things to be confidential from parents, BUT again I don’t know if this means they will be able to see what the bills are for or not.

Insurance policies on this could also vary by provider, so that’s another thing you’d have to check with your provider.

So my car was scratched up during Hurricane Sandy, it didnt get hit by a tree, just stuff flying all over the place. So I called my car insurance like a good fellow and told them.
