Children, Click, and Dogs: Family-friendly girl, energy levels are just right, wonderful spirit, sits on command.got perfect scores on behavior assessment. won over staff and volunteers, this warmhearted soul needs a second chance. cukiouS # 35567-3 YRS OLD PREVIOUS HOME PLAYING GENTLY WITH SMALL CHILDREN WITH LOVE MANHATTAN ACC ****TO BE KILLED 8/6/18**** Gorgeous brindle girl, played gently with small children <3 A volunteer writes: Brindle-icious babe alert!!! Curious is as curious does, and with her petite frame and boundless enthusiasm for toys and exploration, this family-friendly gal could easily be mistaken for a puppy. She loves to run and leap around the yard but is always soft, never pushy, and we're told she spent time in her previous home playing gently with small children, too. Her energy levels are just right for a fun first date, not too high but wonderfully spirited, and she's happy to sit on command, play tug-o-war and share her toys with anyone who cares to join in the game. Curious has lived with another larger dog and enjoys play dates with same-size male peers, though we're told she prefers not to socialize with other females or smaller dogs, and she's easy to handle on leash or off, walking sedately and minding her business as well. After rocking her behavior assessment (perfect scores!) and winning over staff and volunteers alike, she's now looking to expand her social circle to include everyone else in the world. A warmhearted soul with so much to give to the lucky family who welcomes her into their life, Curious can't wait to discover what lies beyond the Care Center's front door. Could it be...a forever home? VIDEO: CURIOUS AND CRONUT https://youtu.be/oF7qORoqW7A Curious: ID #35567 MANHATTAN ACC Estimated to be 3 yrs old, 54 lbs. Brown Brindle, Female Large Mixed Breed Cross Intake Date: 07-23-2018 My health has been checked. My vaccinations are up to date. My worming is up to date. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 weeks old. I came into the shelter as a stray on 23-Jul-2018. Behavior Assessment Date of intake:: 7/23/2018 Spay/Neuter status:: No Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray (With care taker for two months) Previously lived with:: An adult and a dog Behavior toward strangers:: Friendly and outgoing Behavior toward children:: Gently playful Behavior toward dogs:: Barks and growls at small dogs and female dogs, friendly with large male dogs Resource guarding:: None reported Bite history:: None reported Housetrained:: Partially Energy level/descriptors:: Curious is described as friendly, affectionate, and excitable with a medium activity level. Date of assessment:: 7/24/2018 Look:: 1. Dog's eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. Allows head to be held loosely in Assessor's cupped hands. Sensitivity:: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag:: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft 'popping' of the body, etc. Dog might jump on Assessor once play begins. Paw squeeze 1:: 1. Dog gently pulls back his/her paw. Paw squeeze 2:: 1. Summary:: Curious approached the assessor with a soft body. She was social throughout the assessment, allowed all handling, and displayed no concerning behaviors. Summary:: The previous owner of Curious has reported that she may be selective when interacting with other dogs. According to the previous owner, Curious "barks and growls at small dogs and female dogs" and was reported to be "friendly with large male dogs". Curious has displayed social, playful behavior toward as select male helper dog. When greeting a second male helper dog, Curious initially appeared playful, then escalated to snapping and biting with little to no provocation. Due to owner history in addition to shelter observation, it is strongly advised that Curious be the only resident dog in a future home, and be kept out of dog park settings. Summary (1):: 7/24: When introduced off lash to the male greeter dog, Curious is bouncy and playful. Summary (2):: 7/25: Curious engages in bouncy play with a large male dog. Summary (3):: 7/26: Curious initially displays soft body language when greeting the large male helper dog, and offers bows to solicit play. When the helper dog engages, Curious begins to vocalize and immediately escalates to snapping and biting at he other dog. Curious continues to follow and pursue the helper dog until removed by a handler. Date of intake:: 7/23/2018 Summary:: Loose body, allowed handling ENERGY LEVEL:: Curious is described as having a medium level of activity. IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: Curious remains calm when in her kennel in the shelter environment and social with handlers outside of her kennel. She is playful and actively seeks/solicits attention; she has displayed no handling concerns. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below) Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable Recommendations:: Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks Recommendations comments:: Single pet home/no dog parks: Based on the concerning level of escalation toward dogs reported by the former owner and observed in-shelter, Curious would succeed best as the only resident dog. Potential challenges: : House soiling,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration Potential challenges comments:: House soiling: Curious is noted to have accidents in the house, and will likely need guidance with house training. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training only. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Curious is reported to bark and growl at small dogs and at large female dogs. Curious may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior.
