Elden Ring - Thoughts about the Blood Star
For the question "What is the Blood Star?" I find that there is a simple answer and a complicated answer.
Simple answer: Mars, the red planet. Wandering stars = "outer" gods. In the sense of literal outer space.
Complicated answer: 2112. With its minimalist album cover featuring a red star emblem.

There's a subtext to Bloodborne and Elden Ring that "blood" is equated with "sound". Blood "echoes", blood sings sweetly, upcoming game Nightreign has that Recluse ability "Song of the Blood Soul". Bloody Fingers are thematically like an intrusive thought invading your world - like a song that you can't get out of your head.
It's frankly farcical to re-contextualize the blood faction as "fanatics dedicated to music and pop-rock references" and I expect it's a perspective that's not for everyone. But to further examine the concept I've written longer examinations of some of these musical references in Elden Ring and Bloodborne.
The purpose of this post is to layout a rationale for the exact point in real world history when FromSoftware first solidified their homage to the Rush album 2112: Armored Core 4 (2006)
Establishing the Meta-Narrative
In my opinion, FromSoftware has been curating a musical meta-narrative since at least 1997. They have been doing this in a very odd way: through the calendar dates on which their games release.
For most of their early games this doesn't pay off immediately - more like a seed planted to harvest later when FromSoft moved into an era of "eating it's own tail" and digging things up from this early history for design inspiration. I have lists of specific examples of places where the long-running musical meta-narrative is drawn upon to inspire parts of the actual narrative of Elden Ring, for bands including The Beatles, The Scorpions, Dream Theatre, Genesis, The Smashing Pumpkins, Heart, etc. For a non-music example, it's like in Dark Souls where black dragon Kalameet and Seath the Scaleless are loosely based on dragons Guyra and Seath from King's Field.        
At the time of AC 4 Rush had released 17 studio albums with the most recent being Vapor Trails (2002). In my opinion, that was the Rush album that caught the interest of FromSoftware, with Test for Echo (1996) being a close second. Or else it was the juxtaposition of the two, as the lyrics from Test for Echo were inspired by pop psuedo-psychology and lyrics for Vapor Trails were from a place of experiencing true grief, introspection and psychological healing (I won't get into the history - read up on lyricist Neil Peart's biography from this time period to understand why).
It can be inferred that FromSoft was considering a new direction for their creative output around 2002-2004 - as seen by the way that they discontinued every pre-2005 game franchise that they owned, aside from the recently acquired Tenchu IP. Even AC 4 was a hard reboot of its franchise.
In hindsight from an examination of Elden Ring the later years of Rush circa 2002-2012 is very close to what FromSoft wanted to build towards: poetic introspection on humanity and finding the will to keep going after your worldview is shattered. The start point of Rush is where they are in 2004: best known for either dystopian sci-fi or high fantasy stories, with a scattering of entries on other topics. So my impression is that in a "rush" FromSoft laid the groundwork to start their pivot in direction by anchoring at 2112. And also hired a social scientist who showed up knocking on their door (that being Hidetaka Miyazaki).      
I mention this in the Bloodborne post, but cross comparing calendar dates there are 3 matches for the anniversary of Rush albums within a 4 month period of time: Kings's Field Mobile on January 14, 2004 (7th album "Permanent Waves", 1980), Armored Core Nexus on March 18, 2004 (1st album "Rush", 1974), Kuon on April 1st, 2004 (4th album "2112"...allegedly, 1976). 2112 is in a odd place where its actual release date is not remembered but the band themselves acknowledge it as April 1st. Although another comment that I would add about Kuon is that it also has a blood theme - doors are unlocked with scraps of cloth that are named for the planets of the solar system and splattered with bloodstains that increase in quantity with the planet's distance from the sun.

Examination of Armored Core 4
So with all of that background, the first point that ties AC4 to Rush is the release date. The album release date is uncertain, but the FromSoftware website is explicit that the first release of AC4 was on December 21, 2006 - a date that can be written as 2112.       
Secondly, the setting of AC4. The background for the story is that a company based on Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories of Canada was responsible for developing a next-gen technology that powers the AC units - called "Kojima particles" - in the years before the  current events of the game. Rush is a Canadian band, and the album artwork for Test for Echo was inspired by an inukshuk seen by Neil Peart on a trip to the Northwest Territories.       
Thirdly, the themes. FromSoftware has a tendency not to copy directly, but to take bits and pieces. Armored Core 4 was going to be themed around the sun regardless of a music tie-in - that was non-negotiable because of a totally different pattern where all Armored Core games are themed around astrology in sequence (they show their hand on that with the "Zodiac" faction in AC 5). AC 4 happened to align with "Leo" which has the planet ruler of the sun.
The story of 2112 is about a future where the planets of the solar system have been colonized, the last war several years ago led to the rise of a faction of religious zealots who outlawed music and established The Solar Federation, and in the present a rediscovery of music leads to a rebellion with an ending ambiguous as to whether the rebels or the ruling faction won. The FromSoft twist on this concept is that they actually relocate their setting to a near-future Earth in contrast to previous games that took place on Mars or blasted post-apocalypses....but EVERY faction is themed around the sun. So the peoples of Earth are collectively a Solar (sun-themed) Federation (set of groups with individual autonomy).       
As it goes in the lyrics of song "Entre Nous" from Permanent Waves (album previously mentioned): "We are planets to each other / Drifting in our orbits / To a brief eclipse / Each of us a world apart". In the more pessimistic context of AC4: who needs some fantasy space war when we already live on a single planet together where many nations/corporations act recklessly to tear each other apart as if they have a back-up planet on the sidelines to retreat to when this one gets trashed?
Perhaps also consider each faction as a planet who has a different and incompatible ideological position on "what is the sun to us?" A real life example: the Earth with its moon perfectly sized and located to produce total solar eclipses would experience the sun differently compared to Pluto from which the sun is 1/900th of the brightness and seems to be a very bright star, or compared to Mars which has two moons so small that a person standing on the planet's surface wouldn't even notice if they crossed the sun.

And that is altogether how I believe FromSoft to have been partly inspired by progressive rock band Rush starting with references in Armored Core 4.
What does it mean to be Lord of Blood?
There's something more to be said about what the Blood Star means to Mohg - a return to an idealized past. Similarly, while it's tempting to look to the past with rose-tinted glasses, there are some notable criticisms of 2112.
The album includes in its liner notes an acknowledgement of the writing of Ayn Rand - who developed the personal philosophy of Objectivism, which would go on to influence the right wing politics of Libertarianism in the United States. The issues here are multiple - firstly that the specific part of Rand's work that the band found attractive was her views on personal artistic expression - hence the themes of the song itself - but there is a tendency for people to mistake them as agreeing with ALL of Rand's controversial body of work. Secondly, that for the rest of their careers the members of Rush would end up explaining time and time again that they had moved on - they went through a Rand phase from about 1976-1980, and then continued to absorb other influences as happens with many young people.
With a wider view of context, the reason why Rush in 1976 would resonate so strongly with themes of artistic freedom becomes clearer. Their third album leaned into long narrative driven dark fantasy-themed songs and was a flop, with the prevailing mood on the following tour being that this might be the end. With the fourth album there was pressure to become more commercially appealing - write songs that would get radio play. Instead they doubled down on the kind of long-form compositions that they were passionate about and wrote 2112, of which the first half of the album is the eponymous 20-minute long song. The album was a commercial success, and the rest is history. It was later when they were well established with their 7th album Permanent Waves (1980) that Rush gravitated to writing shorter radio friendly songs more on their own terms.

Consider how many of these same factors were repeated with the rise of videogames as a medium through the 1990's and 2000's. There's pressure from investors to make commercially successful games - it's a struggle between making good art and making art that delivers on time, under budget, and focus tested to capture as much of the market as possible. While thematic story elements can be drawn between Armored Core 4 and 2112, from a real world perspective it is the success story of Demon's Souls (2009) that more closely parallels evolution of Rush as a band. It doesn't get mentioned much, but Miyazaki's directorial debuts with Armored Core 4 and 4A weren't exactly considered stellar - with the games both receiving mixed or average reviews. Demon's Souls was during its development considered to be an unfocused and floundering project. So it was a pairing of a director who had yet to really distinguish himself and a dark fantasy setting that he was both passionate about developing and given the creative freedom to implement novel ideas.
In the mythology around Demon's Souls, one of the greatest reasons for its critical success was that it dared to be different in offering brutal difficulty during a time frame when games were trending towards low skill ceilings to chase higher completion rates for wider audiences. Dark Souls (2011) proved that the success of Demon's Souls wasn't a fluke, and once again the rest is history.

In his 2023 auto-biography lead singer of Rush - Geddy Lee - makes it a point to address some controversy around the song "Freewill" from Permanent Waves:
"I sang it every night with confidence and pride, offering it to audiences as a contribution to the time-honoured discussion about existentialism, determinism and faith. It was, in fact, indeterminism that I believe was at the heart of it - the idea that our lives are not predetermined - and I hoped that would come across; but in the four decades since, I've seen people play fast and loose with the interpretation of the last lines of the chorus: 'I will choose a path that's clear I will choose free will' To my dismay, those words have been cited without regard for the song's overall message and used as a catch-all, a license for some to do whatever they want. It makes me want to scream. Taken out of context, if becomes an oversimplified idea of free will, narrow and naïve, not taking into consideration that even the strongest individual must, to some extent, bow to the needs of a responsible society. During the Covid pandemic, I saw this first-hand. When I posted a picture on Instagram of myself wearing a mask, loudmouths were quick to throw 'Free will!' back at me, as if those two words alone constitute permission to act without regard for the well-being of others, to ignore science and to rid ourselves of the responsibility for the consequences of our actions."
I find that a similar phenomena of playing fast and loose with interpretation happens with Elden Ring. In support of Bloodborne in 2015, Miyazaki gave an interview that I often see people clinging to as support for the idea that the stories of the soulsborne games are unsolvable and ultimately up to the individual to imagine:
"When Hidetaka Miyazaki was a child, he was a keen reader, though not a talented one. Often he’d reach passages of text he couldn’t understand, and so would allow his imagination to fill in the blanks, using the accompanying illustrations. In this way, he felt he was co-writing the fiction alongside its original author." - The Guardian, 2015
There is of course a core truth in here: a work of art is not complete until the observer participates with the original author as co-creator. This was part of the philosophy of the anti-art artist Marcel Duchamp, as I discussed in relation to Elden Ring previously. However, the way that I see this quote misused is to assume that Miyazaki's games are to be interpreted as a child would interpret: heavily warped by imagination and wishful thinking. As I've demonstrated in this post, I don't believe that to be the case. Media literacy is something that goes beyond reading words and filling in the blanks with imagination, but also involves ability to identify patterns and themes, compare and contrast topics that are superficially similar, acknowledge when something can be researched to find more context, etc.
So there are a few levels on which to approach the concept that Mohg yearns for an idealized past:
Mohg is like a child or an amateur artist, inspired by the aesthetics that he encounters and using imagination to substitute for true understanding of the thing that he is emulating. For example: Miquella. There are 2 Miquella's in Elden Ring. One is Miquella, twin of Malenia. The God Miquella in the Shadowlands is Mohg's shallow impression of Miquella that has been carved down to a flattened characterization - the Shadowlands is best understood as a landscape formed of Mohg's psyche. It's a surreal dream.
Mohg was enchanted by the idea of regressing to childish simplicity, where the key to success is to "throw blood at everything". As it says in the description of the Cursed-Blood Pot: "Throw at enemies to douse them in accursed blood, causing summoned spirits to assail them with a rabid fervor. A childhood memory of the Lord of Blood." Mohg soaks the cocoon with blood because that's all that he knows how to do that gets results. Like I alluded to at the top of this post - I've barely scratched the surface of the musical references.
Based on cross-referencing, this idea of childhood memories ties back to Kuon (2004). The setting of Kuon is a manor estate and central to the plot are two Mulberry trees which birth silkworms that weave cocoons around the dead and resurrect them. The dead are resurrected through merging with living beings and after this ritual is repeated enough times a special child is born. The protagonists include two women, one of whom is absorbed as part of the ritual and the other who manages to burn down one of the trees and escape with the ritual child. Traces of this plotline can be found in Elden Ring with the Haligtree where albinaurics are being cocooned in silk, in the nearby Consecrated Snowfields there is a setpiece about reuniting two sisters (the Jellyfishes), and then Miquella in his cocoon is made to absorb people via their blood.
This is reflected also in design elements. See below for the Neptune cloth from Kuon, compared to the Lord of Blood's Favor from Elden Ring - in both cases a piece of cloth thoroughly saturated with blood.

Added to this that Mohg carries a trident which is a symbol associated with Neptune, and that one of the myths featuring Neptune involves the time that he sexually assaulted the mortal woman Medusa at Athena's temple, after which Medusa was cursed by Athena to have snakes with petrifying gaze in place of her hair. One of the few depictions of St. Trina from before the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC can be found on St. Trina's torch where her hair twists like snakes.

Mohg wanted to possess Miquella not as a person, but as an ideal that he can project onto. Mohg is a caricature of a nihilist - thus the emphatic shout of "nihil!". When one follows the philosophy that nothing in the world has a real existence then it follows that anyone can be be miscast in any role. Irrational evaluation based on feelings rather than the learned criteria that rational people use to evaluate the soundness of their understandings. Mohg's childhood is a distant memory, and time has smoothed away distinctions and led to the delusion where he sees Miquella as a younger version of himself.
Mohg is the Lord of Blood, and thus that makes him the Lord of Song - and I would further guess that his worldview is constructed from anything and everything that would have been popular enough to achieve hit single status on the radio. Which turns out to be a LOT of facets of human existence. People sing about love, money, sex, war, peace, politics, pop culture philosophies, Jesus, etc. This ties into the nihilism theme - in many cases a single song removed from the context of its album lacks the full information needed to interpret the artistic intent. Mohg has no strategy for evaluating whether any given messaging that he fanatically latches onto is helpful or harmful for a responsible society.
Closing Thoughts
Some words of warning to aspiring artists from a third song off the previously mentioned 7th Rush album:
"One likes to believe in the freedom of music But glittering prizes and endless compromises Shatter the illusion of integrity, yeah... For the words of the profits Were written on the studio walls And Concert halls And echoes with the sound of salesmen" - Spirit of Radio, hit single from Permanent Waves (1980) by Rush
All artists must be motivated by profits upon reaching the scale of it being a full-time job - it is simply necessary for survival. Throughout the 1900's there was the rise of the superstar in music as first radio and then recording media became more widely available and put voices in front of more people. But the mechanism for getting onto that mass physical media is controlled by people less interested in free thought and more interested in profit. Profit does not need to be mutually exclusive with making thoughtful art, but it is like a juggling act for artists to weigh what they can afford to compromise on in the race to establish a like-minded audience before start-up funding runs out.
"Integrity" is defined as "firm adherence to a code of especially moral or artistic values". A pledge to maintain integrity is a sort of assurance that the way something is now is the way that it will continue to be. This goes two ways. On the one hand, integrity is understood as anti-corruption. Ability to reject tactics that improve marketability to a new group at the expense of the original loyal base. On the other hand, a failure to compromise leads to inflexibility or stagnation. What if your initial values perpetuate harm - do you continue to cater to the original fanbase or seek to reconcile with the groups being harmed? Society around you never stops changing and making scientific advancements - do you plug your ears to new information and retreat into personal power fantasies, or do you continue to actively learn and adapt with the change?

Losar System
Cooking the Solar System from the Inside Out

For this system layout, I have taken the Solar System planet's orbital distance in astronomical units, and taken the reciprocal.
The major planets, in order of increasing distance from Los, are Enutpen, Sunaru, Nrutas, Retipuj, Sram, Thrae, Sunev, and Yrucrem.

The Losar system formed through a very different mechanism to our solar system. I'm not sure entirely about the specifics, but the arrangement is not dissimilar to the Kepler-90 system, in which 6 super-earth-mass planets are extremely compact and close to their parent star, with a low-mass and a high-mass gas giant at the outer part of the solar system. Perhaps as Retipuj formed, it migrated inward, carrying with it the ice and gas necessary to form the super-earth-mass planetary cores which accreted into Enutpen and Sunaru, or perhaps there was some kind of switcharoo where the Hot Ice Giants started out on more distant orbits, before crossing orbits with Retipuj and then being coralled into lower orbits.
Either way, some kind of migration is necessary, since Enutpen and Sunaru are volatile-rich, and the outer planets are comparatively volatile-poor.
I've excluded Pluto (or "Otulp") and the other dwarf planets, not because I don't like them or think they count as planets, but because I think by the time you're accounting for every large object in the Solar system in the Losar system, it just gets really implausible. also I bet some objects end up inside of the Sun. Plus, this kind of thought experiment is playing the same kind of planetary dynamics game that splitters are playing when they say Pluto's not a planet. Suffice to say, there are definitely lots of interesting small worlds in the Losar system, but they don't have 1:1 analogues with Solar system planets.
There are only five large moons in the entire system. Aside from Retipuj, satellites and rings are not stable around any of the Hot Giants. If satellites were initially formed around the Hot Giants, they would have either crashed into the planets or were ejected into one of the asteroid belts.
The first civilization to arise in the Losar system are the Sunevians, suspiciously great-ape-like feathered aliens who walk on their upper limbs and use their lower limbs as graspers. Sunev is an oceanic world with one large australia-sized landmass and a great number of volcanic islands. The ocean is relatively shallow, with a lot of coral reefs across the planet. The world is kept warm due to an atmosphere with an Earthlike composition but over twice the atmospheric pressure. Its slow retrograde rotation period results in day/night cycles which are more like seasons, and there is plenty of time during the warm nights to peek through the relatively dense cloud cover into the nearly empty sky. Early or late in the night, one might be able to see Thrae and Noom, or Sram, or if they catch it at just the right time, they might see the incredibly bright spectacle of Retipuj or even Nrutas peek out of the treeline, brighter than any planet or star. On a really good sunset across the ocean with clear skies, some observers report seeing additional super-bright red stars next to the red Sun, but these are thought to be some kind of weather phenomenon reflecting sunlight.
In rare moments of clear skies at night, away from light pollution, one might see many faint hazy spectacles. The zodiacal light (meteoroids orbiting beyond Yrucrem) shines as a faint haze across the ecliptic. The milky way too, shines as a glittery patchy cloud across the sky. But sometimes, every few hours, early in the night, there is a bright patch near the sun, brighter than the zodiacal light. A mystery for ages, but this is now known to be the cometary tail of Enutpen. Sunaru's tail is also detectable, but substantially fainter.
Sunaru and Enutpen were the first planets to be discovered, and were detected within a week of one another by early Losar observers. After the invention of the astronomical telescope, a reflector, observers got very bored during the daytime months. That is, until someone figured out a safe way of pointing towards the Sun. At a cadence of 52 and 103 hours, little black dots would march across the Losar disk. 52 hours was also the cadence of the brightening and dimming of the twilight zodiacal light. And suddenly, two brand new planets were discovered!
Millions of years later on the cold ice-age planet Thrae, astronomers would have an easier time with Enutpen and Sunaru, having known them to be planets since antiquity, due to their apparitions during total solar eclipses. Thrae's comparative cloudlessness also helps.
Sunev has three tiny asteroid moons, which was a helpful jumpstart to Sunevian space exploration, providing early wins for all four space programs. But these little asteroids were not truly other worlds, merely refueling outposts on the way to the rest of the Losar system.
Every few years, there would be a perfect alignment between Sunev and the Hot Giants to allow for a grand tour to be completed using only flybys of the gas giants, with minimal propellant expenditure. The first grand tour attempt got no further than Retipuj--contact was lost due to overheating before the probe made its Nrutas flyby. Specially developed solar flyby probes had to be developed that could survive hotter temperatures before the Hot Giants could be properly explored. These probes would resemble the Parker Solar Probe in some ways, albeit with very different scientific instruments designed for planetary science as opposed to Oilehphysics. Nrutas, Sunaru, and Enutpen turned out all to be much less massive than originally thought, having been puffed up to a larger diameter by being cooked by solar radiation. Nrutas, thought to be the king of the planets, turned out to be merely puffing up its crest to appear regal, so to speak.
Retipuj's moons were incredibly interesting. Retipuj turned out to have 8 satellites--four tiny inner asteroid moons, and four large satellite planets. Otsillac, the innermost turned out to be a volcanic world, yellow-brown in color and pitted with dull-red volcanoes, and a thin atmosphere constantly replenished by volcanic plumes. The next three are in a Ecalpal Resonance of 1:2:4. Being both larger than Otsillac (and, in fact, Yrucrem) and in a more eccentric orbit, Edymenag was even more volcanically active, with a molten surface and exposed mantle. The smaller and more distant Aporue and Oi turned out to be less active, with only a few active volcanoes and many extinct ones. Oi was the least active--although the most recent eruptions were only half a million years old, it was practically dead. It was also the only one with a substantial amount of impact craters, and like Thrae's satellite, Noom, there is likely some volatile ices stuck in the permanent darkness of polar craters.
Hot Giant exploration was best appreciated by specialists, but the other outer planets were much more appreciated. Sram was thought to be warm enough to potentially support liquid water, but its atmosphere ended up being 1/20th of the pressure initially expected, the majority of it having been blown away into space by the Losar winds and the Enutpen tail. But Thrae was a sweet spot--it may have had a thinner atmosphere, but that was compensated by being nearer to Los. In addition, a giant impact it sustained billions of years ago lead to it having a powerful magnetic dynamo to survive the onslaught of the Losar and Enutpen winds. Thrae was a habitable biosphere of similar complexity to Sunev's, albeit with deeper oceans and all the alien horrors that comes with the territory.
Even Yrucrem turned out to be a surprise--despite a dull appearance in telescopes, it was found to have cryovolcanoes and pockets of subsurface oceans, which could potentially support a biosphere. It's a dark brown color due to ice having been aged by solar radiation, with white spots and rays spraying out from recent asteroid impacts and cryovolcanic plumes. The small planets of the trans-Yrucrem asteroid belt were a similar treasure trove, although the nearest large trans-Yrucrem planets were a dozen au away, and requiring RTG power sources. Initial flyby probes to the Trans-Yrucrem-Objects required both being capable of surviving the oppressive heat of Los-shine near Retipuj, and the cold of deep deep space, in order to take advantage of Sunev-Thrae-Sunev-Retipuj gravity assists.
The Sunevians never had a chance to discover the deepest secrets of the Losar system. Their planet froze over due to anthropogenic aerosol production intended to reverse anthropogenic carbon emission, civilization fell, and it never recovered.
But millions of years later, perhaps the Thraelings have a chance to discover, whether through direct imaging or through analyzing the weirdly arrayed orbits of certain trans-yrucrem objects, the four Cold Giant planets, and the distant brown dwarf companion of the Losar system...

As Anakin says "This is where the fun begins." This chapter starts out the part of the fic where we follow Fives' story arc. It won't be a truly faithful translation, but atleast you know what to expect!
Chapter 11: ... Ready For It?
“Each of you take a corridor. That’ll split them up,” you say over the comm, voice calm but firm. “Rendezvous in the central antechamber, then you can hit them hard.”
Your command echoes through the helmet receivers of the troopers fanned out on the fringes of the hangar. You stand over your holotable, fingers darting across the blue-lit projections of the station’s layout. The ever-shifting geometry of Ringo Vinda station makes this feel less like a battlefield and more like a living labyrinth. The Separatists and Republic forces have been trading sections of the station for days now.
You draw in a sharp breath and refocus. The map updates again, one of the corridors just changed hands.
“Adjust your route, Torrent,” you warn. “36th corridor’s just gone red.”
This place is hell to navigate. It’s suspended in orbit, a ring station spiraling above the planet below, and its segments shift with each assault. One moment you're safe, the next you're boxed in. Which is why you’re here, in a makeshift command post in a scorched hangar, headset snug against your ears, eyes flicking between the holomap and the fading glows of blaster fire outside.
Fives’ voice crackles over the comm. “Copy that. We'll draw them out.”
There’s static, then silence. You clench your jaw.
The strategy's risky. If the enemy adapts faster than your troops regroup, they could be picked off before they even reach the antechamber.
But this isn't the first time you've played this game, not with him in the field. And if there's one thing you trust more than your own instincts, it’s the way Fives moves through combat like it’s a dance.
Your fingers tighten around the edge of the console.
You take a deep breath.
This whole mission is riddled with what-ifs. New gear. New tactics. New risks.
The troopers have been outfitted with prototype blaster shields, massive slabs of durasteel alloy that can deflect even concentrated fire. You’re part of the research division behind them, testing this new material under real combat conditions. The shields work, yes, but only just. They’re heavy, cumbersome, and force the men to move slow. Progress through the narrow corridors of this hell has been inch by painful inch.
Still, they’ve been holding the line. Barely.
Morale, however, is a different story. The station's twisting halls offer little in the way of rest. No open skies, no natural light just endless enemy movement. The mission’s dragged on too long, with too few breaks, and you can feel the weariness in every voice that crackles across your comm.
Just moments ago, Fives had pinged you with a private channel.
“Tup’s not looking good. Head’s giving him trouble again. We’ll need a medic as soon as we pull out.”
You’d made a note, then buried the rising dread. You don’t have time to feel things right now.
You shake your head and refocus, eyes locked on the shifting dots on your display. They're in the antechamber now, just as planned.
“Fan out,” you call, your voice strong despite your pulse pounding in your ears. “Take cover along the outer curve. They’re bottlenecked on the left side for now, light them up when they push through.”
The comm crackles again, just a whisper of a voice this time.
“Any word on, hey, wait… stop!”
Skywalker.
Then silence.
“Repeat,” you snap. “General Skywalker, repeat transmission.”
Nothing.
You stare at the screen. The dots start to shift. Not forward. Back.
Something’s gone wrong.
Panic rises like bile in your throat. You tear off your headset and shove it into the hands of the nearest strategist. “Take over,” you bark. “They’re falling back, something’s happened.”
You spin on your heel and sprint toward the nearest corridor that intersects the antechamber’s fallback route. You slam your hand on the security terminal and open a channel to central command.
“Seal the Separatist corridors. Close blast doors six through nine, now!”
A beat of silence, then a loud, mechanical hiss as the blast doors slide shut one by one.
Your boots thunder against the durasteel floor, each step echoing louder than the last, louder even than your heart. You don’t know what’s waiting ahead, but if Fives is in trouble, if he’s hurt, you need to be there.
You round the final corner and skid to a stop just as the squad stumbles into the chamber in disarray. The tension is immediate.
Fives is dragging Tup into a side room, holding him in a restraint, the kind meant to protect more than punish. Tup’s arms are shaking violently, his head lolling side to side. Rex stalks beside them, hand on his holster. They get him into the room, and you see Fives quickly secure Tup’s wrists behind him.
Then the air shifts. A stillness falls.
Master Tiplee steps into the chamber, her expression hollow, eyes red with grief. In her arms is the body of her sister, Master Tiplar.
You stop breathing.
No, no, this isn’t possible. How did this happen?
Around you, the men move like shadows, posturing defensively, weapons loose in their hands, expressions dulled by shock. The silence is eerie. The kind that hangs after something terrible, before the full weight of it settles in.
You hear some muttering, rising from the room where Tup was taken.
You force your legs to move and step quietly toward it. You glance inside.
Tup is rocking slightly, eyes distant, sweat streaking his temples.
“Good soldiers follow orders… good soldiers follow orders…”
There’s saliva gathering in the corners of his mouth. His gaze passes right through you, like you’re not even there.
Your stomach knots.
Fives sees you.
He stands abruptly and slips out of the room. His face is pale beneath the dust and sweat, jaw clenched so tight you think it might crack.
“I don’t know what happened,” he says, voice hoarse, low. One of his hands grips your shoulder. It’s barely a touch, but it roots you. Anchors him.
“He just snapped. Killed her. Point-blank. No warning. It wasn’t him in there.”
The words hang in the air between you, heavy. Before you can answer, the silence is shattered by a cry from the room.
Tup.
A sudden crash. Screaming. Tup launches himself with unnatural force towards the doorway. Master Tiplee flinches as he lashes out wildly, his eyes wide, filled with fear and fury. A Force user somewhere in the room, maybe her, maybe Skywalker arriving too late, throws him against the wall to subdue him.
He crumples to the floor, unconscious or stunned.
Fives immediately rushes back inside.
You snap into action, hitting your comm. “Medbay, we’ve got one incoming. Gonna need sedatives.” 
Skywalker and Rex accompany Fives as he half carries, half drags Tup out and down the corridor, following you to the portion of the hangar set up as a medbay.
The medbay is too quiet. 
Tup lays strapped to a gurney, unmoving. Monitors beep in steady rhythm beside him, charting his shallow breaths and irregular vitals.  Whatever’s wrong with him, no one has a name for it yet, but it’s something bad. Something big.
Fives sits at his side, elbows on his knees, hands twisted together. His helmet rests forgotten on the floor, and he hasn’t looked away from Tup once. The worry in his eyes cuts through you sharper than glass. 
You stand near the foot of the bed, just far enough to feel like you don’t belong. There’s a tight circle of voices in the corner of the room; General Skywalker, Rex, Kix, a couple of command officers. The conversation turns clinical, procedural. What to do with Tup. How to classify this. Where he should be sent for further analysis. You listen, but you don’t speak. You know there’s no room in this discussion for emotion, and certainly none for you.
Still, your eyes never leave Fives. You see the way his jaw keeps tightening, the way his knee bounces like he’s barely holding it together. You want to reach for him. Say something.
Finally, a decision is made: Tup is to be transferred to Kamino. They’ll do a full neurological workup. Kix seems reluctant, but agrees it’s the best chance at answers. Fives doesn’t hesitate, he volunteers to go. Of course he does. You could’ve guessed it before he said the words.
“I’m going with him,” he says firmly, standing at last. “He’s not going through this alone.”
The next few hours pass in a blur of logistics, prepping the med ship, authorizations, departure clearances. You’re not part of the convoy. You're told to remain on the station. You don’t argue, though it kills you not to.
You watch the ship launch from the hangar, Fives onboard beside his brother. You stand there long after they’ve disappeared into hyperspace.
You’re halfway through a briefing when the alert comes through. An emergency distress signal. The ship carrying Tup is under attack. Separatist forces. Your blood runs cold.
Why a medical ship?
Your mind races. There’s no strategic value, no prisoners of war, no sensitive intel, unless...
You storm into the command center, already formulating a plan before you hit the holotable. “They’re not after the ship,” you tell Skywalker. “They’re after Tup. They may have had something to do with his actions.”
He doesn't dismiss you. In fact, his eyes sharpen with realization.
You deploy your strategy fast, rerouting patrol ships, coordinating intercepts, buying just enough time for the medical vessel to escape. You save them. Not just the medics. Not just Tup.
You save Fives.
You approach General Skywalker with an air of confidence you most certainly fake. “Sir.” You say, careful to keep your voice in check. 
“I think I should accompany the men to Kamino. There’s clearly something going on, something the Separatists don’t want us to know. I can get a better look at things from a first-person perspective on Kamino. I can report back.” You say it all at once, ending with a quiet but deep breath. 
Skywalker ponders it, looks at you with weary eyes. “Fine.” He says. “I want a briefing if you find any patterns.” 
You nod and turn on your heel to go. 
Kamino is unlike any place you've ever been. 
The ocean stretches endlessly in all directions, crashing against the stark white structures with relentless force. Rain pelts down in sheets, so heavy and fast it sounds like blaster fire against the walkways. Wind howls between the platforms, tugging at your coat and cutting straight through your clothes.
You hurry across the landing pad, boots slick on the metal, head bowed against the storm. There’s no sky here, just a ceiling of swirling clouds and lightning flashes. It feels like the whole planet is holding its breath.
You make it inside, soaked to the bone. The interior is all chrome and silence, sterile and hollow. 
You don’t get more than a few paces in before Rex nearly collides with you, moving fast, his expression grim. His shoulder brushes yours, almost hard enough to spin you around.
“Hey,” he calls over the roar of rain as the doors start to hiss closed behind him. “Tup’s down Hallway A23. Fives is quarantined next to him. Keep me posted, will you?”
“Wait, quarantined?” you shout, but he’s already gone, sprinting back toward the storm.
Your heart thuds in your chest. 
Quarantined?
Why?
You set off down the corridor at a near run, the sterile white halls stretching endlessly, twisting and turning in a way that makes your pulse climb higher with every step. Nothing here is marked clearly. Everything looks the same. 
You're deep into the facility when panic really starts to rise, you’re turned around, lost. Hallway A23 might as well be a myth at this point. You curse under your breath and spin, unsure which way you even came from.
“Need some help?” a voice calls.
You whirl around.
A girl stands in the middle of the hall; small, human, maybe nine or ten years old. She’s dressed in plain Kaminoan grays, a data tablet clutched under one arm. Her blonde hair is spiked up and held back with a headband, and she wears a bright, easy smile like this is all perfectly normal.
You blink at her. “Uh… yeah,” you say, thrown off by her sudden appearance. “I’m looking for Hallway A23.”
She tilts her head, the corners of her mouth twitching like she’s trying not to laugh. “Thought so. You’ve got the “lost” look.” She turns smartly on her heel and gestures for you to follow. “Come on.”
You hesitate just a moment before falling into step behind her.
“How do you know this place so well?” you ask, voice echoing a little in the quiet.
“I live here,” she says simply, as if it’s the most obvious thing in the world. “I know every corridor, vent shaft, and shortcut."
You stare at her back as she walks, confusion knitting in your brow. A child. Living on Kamino? That doesn’t make sense. You thought the only inhabitants were the Kaminoans, clone cadets, and a handful of personnel.
But there’s no time to chase that thread now.
She leads you with perfect confidence, turning left and then right, ducking through a maintenance bypass tunnel and emerging into a long, gleaming hallway marked A23. She stops at the threshold and grins over her shoulder.
“Here you go. Tup’s room is on the left.” She points to the sealed door next to it. “And that one’s Fives.”
Your stomach tightens. She knows their names? Who is this kid?
“Thank you,” you say, but she’s already skipping off, tablet swinging at her side.
You press the panel outside Fives’ room, and the door hisses open softly.
Inside Fives is pacing like a caged animal, red fatigues rustling with the movement. A medical droid hovers beside him, trying to scan his vitals, but he brushes it off with growing impatience.
The moment he sees you, he stops dead in his tracks. 
“Mesh’la,” he breathes, crossing the room in three quick strides. He wraps his arms around you with a desperation that nearly knocks the breath from your lungs. “You’re here.”
He clings to you like a man who’s been drowning.
“They’re running tests on Tup,” he says into your hair, voice shaking. “He was… he was shaking, like seizing. Then he started screaming. And then they cut me off. I couldn’t get to him, couldn’t see him.”
You tighten your hold on him, grounding him with your touch. His heartbeat thunders against your own, fast and unsteady.
For a long second, neither of you say anything. The storm outside is distant now, but the storm in him is not.
Then he pulls back just enough to look at you, brows furrowed. “Wait, what are you doing here? You weren’t cleared for Kamino, you were supposed to stay on the station…”
You gently place your hand on his chest, steadying him. “The attack on the med ship. It didn’t make tactical sense. Unless the Separatists were after Tup. I pitched the theory to Skywalker. He agreed. I was sent to oversee security and check for signs of Separatist involvement.”
Fives stares at you like he’s seeing you for the first time all over again. “That makes sense,” he mutters. 
He shakes his head and grabs your hands again, grip tight. “They won’t let me in to see him. I’m being monitored, some kind of containment protocol. But you… you’re cleared. You can go in.”
You nod, already knowing what he’s going to ask.
“Can you check on him? Be there for him? Please. He shouldn’t be alone.”
Your heart aches at the way Fives says it. At how helpless he sounds.
You lift up on your toes and kiss him, just a soft, brief press of your lips against his. “Of course,” you whisper. “I’ll be back soon.”
You squeeze his hand once before turning and slipping back out into the corridor.
The door to Tup’s room is just a few steps away.
As you approach, a medical droid glides past you on its way out. The door remains open.
Inside, the lights are low, and monitors glow blue and green in the dimness. Tup lies motionless on the bed, expression slack, eyes closed, his chest rising and falling shallowly. Electrodes run from his temples, and strange readings flicker across the screen beside him.
You step in slowly and immediately freeze.
You’re not alone.
To the left of Tup’s bed stands Shaak Ti. You recognize her instantly, legendary warrior, member of the Jedi High Council.
To her right stands another figure, Nala Se, the Kaminoan lead scientist. You recognize her from the intelligence briefings on the trip in. 
Both turn as you enter.
“Hello,” Shaak Ti says calmly, though there’s a weight behind her words. “We were told by General Skywalker to expect you.”
You square your shoulders, meeting her gaze.
Nala Se tilts her head ever so slightly, her long, graceful neck swaying with the movement. Her vast, unblinking eyes fix on you, cold and unreadable. “The clone designated CT-5385 is in critical condition. Any unnecessary presence may be... disruptive.”
Your jaw tightens. “I have my orders.” You glance to Shaak Ti, hoping for reinforcement. She watches you with the calm, unreadable gaze of a Jedi Master.
After a beat, she nods. “Someone to watch over him and report back to General Skywalker is wise,” she says. “This is his man, after all.”
Nala Se exhales in a scoff. “Perhaps,” she murmurs, and gestures curtly toward the bed. “Very well.”
You take the seat beside Tup, placing your hands carefully in your lap. One glance at him, and your throat tightens. His face is paler than before, ashen and slick with sweat. His lips are slightly parted, jaw slack. Whatever’s happening to him is getting worse. Rapidly.
Your heart thuds in your ears.
A droid you don’t recognize glides over to Nala Se. Its voice is mechanical, neutral. “Might I suggest a second neural scan? An atomic-level scan may reveal what we seek.”
Nala Se narrows her eyes slightly,  “It is possible,” she murmurs, “but the procedure would be highly invasive. And if his deterioration continues…”
That’s when the conversation begins to shift. Technical jargon and cold medical terminology. You’re not a medic, you’re a strategist, but even you can tell the tone has changed.
Then you hear it.
“His neural patterns are too unstable. The subject is weak.”
“A full scan would risk permanent damage.”
“He may not survive another cycle.”
And then, “terminate”.
Your head snaps up.
Shaak Ti’s voice slices through the tension like a blade. “The Republic commissioned the clone army,” she says, cool but firm. “We therefore bear the privilege and the responsibility of their care.”
Shaak Ti continues, “I will consult the Jedi Council before permitting any atomic-level scan. Tup will not be terminated until a decision is made. That is final.”
Silence settles like a fog.
Nala Se’s tall frame stiffens, but after a long moment, she bows her head with a small nod. “As you wish.”
The droid withdraws. The tension lingers. Then both Nala Se and Shaak Ti leave the room in a whir of robes.
You exhale slowly, only now realizing you’ve been gripping your seat so hard your knuckles have gone white.
You couldn't say anything. This isn’t your fight.
But the thought of Tup being terminated, no, killed in the name of data makes your stomach turn.
You lean in slightly toward Tup, watching the faint rise and fall of his chest. 
He’s not property. He’s someone’s brother.
Fives’ brother.
You sit silently, the sterile chill of the medbay seeping into your skin. The hum of machinery surrounds you, but your focus narrows to just one thing, Tup.
His hand rests limply on the gurney beside him. You reach for it, letting your fingers curl around his.
It’s cold.
Too cold.
“I’m here,” you whisper, unsure if he can hear you, but hoping some part of him does. “I’ve got you.”
