a hill i will DIE on is that all books should have content warnings right before the dedication. this is not to say that books should be gate-kept from younger audiences or anything like that, it’s mostly because i’ve read some really uncomfortable things in books that i would liked to have been aware of before going into the books, so i could make an educated decision about whether reading the book was the right thing for me.

I'm curious!! Whats ur top 5 favorite + least favorite characters in bnha adn why?
I'm a binge reader, so I don't remember the chapter names or numbers, but I do remember what happens in them, so I'm going to describe them by my favourite and least favourite moments.
This is going to get long, so I'm putting this under a read more, it also has manga spoilers so beware, although nothing recent since I haven't finished reading the manga.
Edit: anon i just realised you meant characters and not chapters, the answer to that one is a few posts above this, I’m so sorry. I hope you enjoy this essay about my favourite chapters. I’m sorry again.
These are my favourite chapters:
1- The chapter in which we discover Shigaraki's past, and it drives us to find just how bad Hero society failed him, it is, by all means, a heartbreaking chapter. Still, it lets us see just what kind of people are framed as villains in bnha (the wrong ones) and further hammers the point of Shigaraki being a tool and a victim of OFA.
I've always said Shigaraki and Eri have a lot in common, I was right. If you read closely you realise that the Hero society goes beyond the Heroes, the people in the society, the adult civilians who saw little Tenko and did nothing, they failed him too. All because Heroes make ppl in Bnha's society think looking out for the vulnerable is exclusively a hero thing (they don't do that either, do they? lol)
2- The chapter where Toga is interviewed, and she says she wants to live in her own normal way, to be like the people she loves. I know she turned into Ochako right after that, but I do think she meant the League. Ultimately it was a chapter that although it subjected Toga to so much pain and other stuff I have issues with, gave us so much insight on who Toga is as a character, what her motivations are and how love looks to her. I'm a Toga fan if u can't tell.
3- In the Endeavor arc (ew), the chapter where Natsuo rightfully storms off after hearing Midoriya tell Shouto about forgiving Endeavor (ew). Everyone knows I hate Endeavor and this arc so much, however, the panels of Natsuo crying in his dad's face and telling him there's no way in hell he's ever going to forgive him are, in my opinion, a really accurate portrayal of abused anger and hurt over things we can't change. I felt that so hard and close to my heart. I love Natsuo very much, and his rage was heartbreaking and rightful in a very personal way.
4- The chapter where Class 1-A is on their way to the USJ. This is one of my favourite chapters just because we get to see people actually be friendly to Midoriya and make fun of Bakugo for his attitude. This is obviously something Midoriya never thought possible, this is something new for him, someone actively making fun of his bully. I think it made him feel safer at UA than before.
5- The chapter in which Mirio and Midoriya find Eri, this is a favourite because I loved Mido's determination to take Eri away right there right then, fuck everything, fuck fancy plans, just save the little girl who's obviously being abused. I know this is a dream for a lot of abused kids, just be saved by someone who notices and cares enough to risk it all. The only reason this isn't ranked higher is because of Mirio letting her go, no hate to him at all, he shouldn't have been in that position whatsoever, but he made the wrong choice and eventually made up for it, but it is something that bothers me greatly.
These are my least favourite chapters
1- The High End vs Endeavor fight. Do I really need to go into this one? It completely forgot the victims in favour of the abuser and his feelings. It was a way to narratively guilt trip the Todorokis into giving their abuser a chance. They used Rei for that as well, Rei, who is still locked up because of Endeavor. That chapter said FUCK ABUSE VICTIMS with its whole chest.
2- Any chapter where any member of the League is physically and psychologically put through hell and framed it as punishment for being "evil", get that out of my face. But especially the chapter where Overhaul kills Magne, there's no reason other than transmisogyny behind that murder, but I guess it's okay bc they are villains, right?? /s
3- The Midoriya vs Todoroki fight, yes, you read it right. If you read my latest posts, you know that while I do agree with the "It's your fire" thing I find the narrative push for Todoroki to break his boundaries or lose, disgusting, plus Midoriya's speech was guilt-tripping. I don't hold it against Midoriya because Horikoshi will use Midoriya to project his abuse apologism and lack of respect for trauma victims.
4- The chapter in which TetsuTetsu and Todoroki fight, in a similar manner, I dislike this chapter because the narrative will trigger Todoroki to make him lose when it's needed but completely ignore his trauma in any other situation while pushing for him to forgive his abuser. I love Tetsutetsu this has nothing to do with him, I loved his competitiveness. Although I do think the fight should have been stopped before either of them got hurt.
5- The chapter in which Midoriya has to prove himself to Night Eye to get hired. The reason behind my dislike for this chapter is the message that you must prove yourself to people to be deemed worthy, Plus Night Eye literally hired him to destroy his self-confidence, and that's something that soured the whole chapter for me. I found that to be vile.

mdzs adaptations masterlist
look this is my first post on this account and I figured what better to make it about than my current obsession: modaozushi (or “the grandmaster of demonic cultivation” for all you english plebs out there I say as if I was not, in fact, one of those english plebs)
so I got into this fandom around mid-november-ish (as my ao3 bookmarks will clearly show you) and I have got to say: I am LOVING it
there’s just something about it that kinda latched onto me, and i doubt it’ll ever let go. and you know what? I’m okay with that.
so let’s b-b-break it down
from what I’ve gathered, mdzs is the favoured child of the threquel of Chinese novels written by mòxiãng tóngxiù (each standalone but they all seem to be set in the same/similar universe(s)). the other novels include the scum villains self saving system and heavenly officials blessing (both of which I ALSO have feelings about but this ain’t about them). from my understanding, mdzs is the most popular amongst the other two, and it’s pretty obvious. this bitch has SO MANY different adaptations attached to its name it’s unreal. and here is where our story begins…
let’s start of with the classic: the original novel.
(you can find the English translated novel here: https://exiledrebelsscanlations.com/the-grandmaster-of-demonic-cultivation/
so the novel. I’ve heard some pretty mixed reviews about the novel tbh, and I have admittedly not finished all of it (look okay it’s p long and I could be using that time for fanfic) but I’d say generally ppl like it. the plot seems reasonably solid, the characters are *chef’s kiss* (especially my son Lan wangji) and it’s overall a nice mix of Soul Crushing Angst and a slightly below comfort ratio. oh and it’s gay.
not bad.
the main complaints I’ve heard about it are, uh, some questionable consent scenes between the main characters (nothing too bad, but enough to rightfully piss ppl off, and pls watch out for it if it might trigger you).
other than that, I honestly dont hear the novel talked about too too often, but idk. I mean I liked the parts I’ve read.
the only thing I know about it if that it’s… a thing, and the art looks very nice (v similar to the donghua; we’ll get there)
Imma give it a 7.75 stars out of ten.
up next: the donghua
(donghua: basically a Chinese version of anime)
the donghua is actually the only adaptation I’m like semi-comfortable talking about (because I’ve actually watched the majority of it) and let me just say:
stunning
I believe it’s following the book canon fairly closely (don’t quote me on that) and it’s currently ongoing with two completed seasons and the third in the works. it’s all easily found on YouTube with English subs if you’re interested! (couldn’t find any dub)
I,,,,, actually love the donghua with all my heart ngl. the animation is absolutely BEAUTIFUL, I adore the voice actors, the character designs are so visually pleasing and it’s just 👌👌. ofc since this is a Chinese tv show there is some censorship (so I guess the main couple (being very gay) probably won’t explicity get together) but honestly? I ain’t even that mad. there’s plenty of undertone anyhow.
I just *clenches fist* love it so much. high HIGH recommend.
I’m giving it 9.5 stars out of 10
to conclude: the untamed/cgl verse
so if you’ve been lurking around the mdzs tag on tumblr, this is probably the one you’ve heard about the most. live action, with 50 episodes, all like in the 40 to 50 mins range, what’s not to like?
well. it diverges a lot from canon (new plot points, changing some stuff around, new OCs, the whole shebang) and it definitely is more heavily censored than the book is. some ppl like the divergences, some don’t. I like a couple of them (I liked how they gave more screentime to more minor characters, and I def liked my girl Lan Yi) and there were some I didn’t (let! Wei! wuxian! stay! on! the! dark! side! also what the fuck jgy). overall it’s more up to preference.
I did note a lot of ppl actually liked how it was more censored. since the censorship takes away most of the sexual side to their relationship, it also for rid of all the questionable consent scenes as well, and it let the viewer focus more on the romantic side of the main couple. although again never explicitly stated they get together, you can clearly see how deep their relationship goes and how much they mean together, romantic partners or not. I… really liked that.
ofc, the one thing that sorta bothered me was the things like the CGI and the wigs. this is more not picky, but I definitely felt the fighting in the donghua was much more badass and cool, whereas the cgl verse kept bugging me with all the… twirling and questionably cgi’d flips. idk, I guess maybe the producer didn’t have the biggest budget? it just kinda bothered me, but it took nothing away from the overall story
Imma give it 8.5 stars out of 10
vague notes :
there is also a translated manhua (Chinese equivalent to manga) adaptation and an audio drama adaptation! I have zero (0) knowledge about either of them, but they are a thing so… check them out? lol
fanfiction:
mdzs has pretty good fanfic on ao3. not the biggest fandom I’ve seen, but it does seem to be growing quite fast (at a rate I have only seen in fandoms like *pained cough* voltron or the umbrella academy) and it’s generally very good! I am thoroughly enjoying it. there’s a lot of gen as well as romance, and ofc my fav genre: gen romance (jk my fav genre is gen) but there really is something for everyone, a statement I do not say often. fanfiction.net does not have nearly enough (and is a pain to find) so I recommend endeavoring on ao3 if you’re interested
conclusion:
mdzs is great. oh and happy bday lan wangji!
