Day 265c: Saturday September 21, 2024 - "Take Me Out To The Ball Game"
I was motivated to not let this fun baseball season get into the books without updating my Bucket List Boneyard to be back in line with "visit all the MLB Stadiums". - I didnt need to carry the "all but one" moniker into another offseason. It was the Covid Year when this gem was built, and while the old Choctaw Stadium wasnt all that bad when I was there ten years ago, once inside I understood the upgrade - a retractable roof for those hot texas day games and built with a feel of a lot of seats right on top of the field. And the place was full and vibing tonight with the Mariners in town. I bought out the 3rd row in Section 314 for all of Spencer's kids and Grammee and had a grand old time answering a million why questions for this clan whose first sport is futbol. Everyone settled and the game rolling, I cut away for a 5th inning food stroll, and my chance to take in the whole stadium. And I efficiently explored it all while keeping an eye on the scoreboard (a Mariners lost would be helpful to the Tigers playoff chances).
I found the famed Boomstick and stood in the line that led right past a window of the feets long hot dog and piled on toppings. I got intimidated and though I had invested all that time for my big MLB ballpark moment, I thought about how I would feel tomorrow on the plane and bowed out. When William gets bigger and bigger I told myself. I'll definitely need some support for that one.
The place is beautiful and well settled up. It feels like a Texas Stadium. They even had the Six Shooter dancing girls. Whats not to love. Even though the Mariners won, there was plenty to cheer and talk about with over 25 hits and even a leadoff homerun by JRod. We all moseyed our way out, ice cream collectible helmets in tow feeling really good about a fun time at the ballpark. Globe Life is definitely one of the best ballparks in baseball. "How Do you know?" "Because Ive been to them all." Even if I didnt eat a boomstick.
And while I roll back up my own Bucket List Boneyard, William will now have his own headstart with ballgames in 11 Stadiums (Red Sox, Tigers, Brewers, Cardinals, Padres, Diamondbacks, Rangers, Twins, Athletics, Angels, and Dodgers). I really think this one will be memorable though - not just for the ice cream in the helmet, or for the frightful tumble into row 2; but because it was spent with family, a lot of happy family. Having a good time together. Nothing better than baseball for that.

Yanks Win Another Series, But Don’t Sweep It
NYY vs. DET
Game 1
RHP Gerrit Cole started for the New York Yankees versus opener Alex Faedo and the Detroit Tigers.
In the bottom of the first inning, 1B DJ LeMahieu hit a solo homerun off Faedo, giving the Yankees a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the sixth inning, future Hall of Fame player and DH Miguel Cabrera hit an RBI single off Cole, scoring RF Kerry Carpenter. The score was tied at 1-1.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, DH Giancarlo Stanton hit his 400th career homerun, a two-run shot off reliever José Cisnero. 2B Gleyber Torres and Stanton scored and it was 3-1 Yankees.
youtube
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Torres hit a two-run RBI double off reliever Brendan White. RF Aaron Judge and CF Jasson Domínguez scored. It was 5-1 Yankees and they would win by that score.
Game 2
RHP Clarke Schmidt for the Yankees pitched against RHP Matt Manning for the Tigers.
In the top of the first inning, Carpenter hit an RBI single off Schmidt. RF Zach McKinstry scored and the Tigers took the lead 1-0.
In the bottom of the second inning, LeMahieu hit an RBI single off reliever Beau Brieske, scoring 3B Oswald Peraza. The score was tied at 1-1.
The reason that Manning only pitched the first inning was because Stanton hit a line drive – clocked at 119 mph off Stanton’s bat – off Manning’s foot for the last out of the inning.
Anyway, in the bottom of the third inning, The Martian left the space shuttle by hitting a solo homerun – his first one at Yankee Stadium – off Brieske. The Yankees took the lead by 2-1.
youtube
Later in the bottom of the third inning, Peraza hit an RBI double off Brieske, scoring Torres. The Yankees extended their lead to 3-1.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Torres hit an RBI single off Cisnero, scoring DH Judge. The Yankees further extended their lead to 4-1.
In the top of the seventh inning, 2B-RF Andy Ibáñez hit an RBI single off Schmidt, scoring 1B Spencer Torkelson. It was now 4-2 Yankees.
Later in that inning, rookie CF Parker Meadows hit a sacrifice fly off reliever and LHP Wandy Peralta. 3B-LF Matt Vierling scored from third base and the Tigers closed in on the Yankees at 4-3.
However, the damage would stop right there and Yankees would win by that 4-3 score.
Game 3
LHP Carlos Rodón got the nod for the Yankees versus LHP and former Boston Red Sox Eduardo Rodriguez.
In the top of the first inning, Torkelson hit a two-run homerun off Rodón, scoring Vierling and himself. The Tigers took an immediate 2-0 lead against the Yankees.
In the bottom of the second inning, Torres hit a solo homerun off Rodriguez. The Tigers still had the lead at 2-1.
In the top of the third inning, Vierling hit an RBI double off Rodón, scoring 3B Andre Lipcius. The Tigers extended their lead to 3-1.
Later that inning, Ibáñez hit a sac fly off Rodon, scoring Vierling. The Tigers extended their lead further to 4-1.
In the top of the fourth inning, LF Tyler Nevin – the son of Los Angeles Angels manager and former Yankees third base coach Phil Nevin – hit an RBI double off Rodón. The Tigers extended their lead once again at 5-1.
In the same inning, Vierling hit an RBI single off Rodon, scoring Nevin. It was now 6-1 Tigers.
Later that inning, Torkelson hit a two-run homerun off reliever Randy Vásquez. The Tigers continued to pour it on with runs and now led the Yankees by 8-1.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, LF Everson Pereira hit an RBI double off Rodriguez, scoring Torres and SS Anthony Volpe. The Yankees now trailed the Tigers at 8-3.
In the top of the eighth inning, Ibáñez hit a two-run homerun off reliever Albert Abreu, scoring Vierling and himself. The Tigers extended their lead to 10-3 and would win by that score.
The only entertaining part about this game was that starting 1B Anthony Rizzo, who will not return to play this season for the Yankees due to post-concussion syndrome, got ejected in the top of the fourth inning by home plate umpire Alan Porter.
youtube
Rizzo was sticking up for the kid, Domínguez, after Porter punched out The Martian looking after a terrible strike three call in the bottom of the third inning to end it.
The funny part about the whole thing was that Porter ejected a guy who’s not even on the active roster. I understand that rules are rules when it comes to arguing balls and strikes.
However, as an umpire in MLB, you can’t always have rabbit ears and be sensitive to a team player or personnel’s critique of your strike zone.

The Mets Farm System Report
The Mets Farm System Report By Ernest Dove
The Sports Report continues a look at the Mets farm system as a group of them continue training after a lost season at the spring complex in Port Saint Lucie, Florida. Players from across the country and world continue to gather in St. Lucie. They are fighting through the relenting south Florida rain to participate in simulated games, utilizing all the players they have, often playing out of position sandlot style to get games in.  An organization and farm system recently having shown a decrease in respect throughout the national rankings circles continues to quietly have talent by the dozens. A system loaded with talent grouped in the 18 to 20 age range continues to grow and mature per multiple reports from spring through winter. Today I wanted to further review and discuss a handful of young prospects on the farm and what fans may expect in the hopeful 2021 season to come.
Starting at the top of my personal team rankings is 18 year old catcher Francisco Alvarez. The young catcher was able to play in 42 games during his first professional season for the GCL Mets and Kingsport Mets. Going strictly off the box scores there is no denying the hit tool of a then 17 year old slashing .312/.407/.510/.916 across the two affiliates. Also appears to be an impressive 21 walks to 37 strikeouts overall through his 182 plate appearances. My understanding per early reports through the present day is that his skills behind the plate show a prospect still currently projected to stay at the position. This is key considering the position with such offensive showing and potential, leading to my current day positioning of Alvarez as the organization's number one prospect.
The question going forward into 2021, especially after a lost season, is where to place the soon to be 19 year old come spring. Catchers often can move slower through the system. But would it be wise to have Alvarez go from 182 career plate appearances in rookie ball levels right to low A Columbia? The bat potential appears too strong to hold back in 2021 at perhaps a projected affiliate and league created in spring training sites. For now I must assume and project that Alvarez appears in Low A.
A case still can be made by many to have infielder Ronny Mauricio keep his place as the top prospect in the organization. As with recent international top bonus prospects before him like Amed Rosario and Andres Gimenez, Mauricio has been rushed through the levels early in his pro career. The box scores have been different but the potential remains.  By all accounts, per my sources through the 2019 Low A season up until now, I am told Ronny Mauricio is a future major league starting shortstop. The soon to be 20 year old come April may perhaps by these reports may currently still lean closer to Rosario than Gimenez defensively, the potential remains and I am told Mauricio should stick at the SS position if the organization wants to go in this direction moving forward.
However, based on his physical frame and offensive potential I’m told that as certain things began to click for him during the 2019 season, he could be a change of position to the biggest need later option. Based on his age, I am wondering if the Mets consider still having Mauricio begin 2021 in Class High A instead of jumping him to AA. This may be wise even if just for a month or two.
The name that appears to be hottest during the initial weeks of instructional league now is infielder Brett Baty. Baty has reportedly been showing off his power with multiple home runs during simulated games. From the time of initial instructional league participation by Baty the year he was drafted I was told one key element to Baty was his work ethic. I am told his effort and maturity in training was noticeable and respected by his peers from that time until now. This is why I have continued to look beyond any initial small sample size of games played during this draft year. This is where you trust the amateur scouting department and the reports from those around him going into 2021. I feel it is safe to project Baty to have a good season ahead. The power numbers can always be hard to project for players in Low A and Class High based on the areas, weather and ball parks. For now I am still willing to predict and project that Baty plays out 2021 at the A ball levels and goes into double digits in homeruns. As far as position, I have not been informed of any negative aspects to his game at third base, where I would like to see him through the next season.
One pitcher of note is the perhaps the most notable. Presumably everyone's top organizational pitching prospect Matthew Allan continues to impress on and off the field, as is the case with Baty. Multiple reports continue to praise Allan specifically for his fastball and curveball. I was told early on following his draft season the coaches were already working with Allan on specific aspects to his pitching. By all accounts since it appears the work has been paying off. At this point and going forward it sounds as if the talented young arm is still projected to be that upper 90s with at least one plus secondary pitch will continue to earn the title of top pitching prospect heading into the 2021 season.  Always hard to project where pitchers can land especially after a lost season. Perhaps Allan will begin April as part of a piggy back starter combo for Columbia. This worked well in 2019 for young pitchers Bryce Hutchinson and now former Mets prospect Simeon Woods-Richardson.
Speaking of Hutchinson, the hulking young soon to be 22 year old righty has spent the lost season getting into the best physical shape of his pro career to this point. Hutchinson went from piggy back starter, to late game reliever to rotation for Low A Columbia in 2019. Going on two years, my initial thoughts, projections and evaluations of Hutchinson, per sources, have led me to continue projecting him as a possible alternative future version of Seth Lugo 2.0. It appears the future still remains a bit cloudy as far as projecting Bryce Hutchinson as a starter or reliever.  My ongoing opinion based on reports peg him as a future reliever who could be rushed up the levels in 2021. I choose to believe one way or another with strong performance and good health Hutchinson will be at the AA level in 2021. Things to keep an eye on are his fastball velocity and ongoing improved secondary pitches. This appears to be a pitcher who does not have to rely heavily on his fastball. The natural movement on his pitches can allow for him to get batters out on multiple pitches.
The ongoing wildcard within the Mets organization in my opinion continues to be infielder Shervyen Newton. The extremely talented, toolsy and athletic 21 year old has remained a work in progress through his pro career up until winter instructional league. By all accounts and reports I am told the talent is there, the ability is there and the power is naturally there. Putting it all together remains the key.  The ongoing stat to keep an eye on throughout his years in the pros continues to be the strikeout rate. It is my understanding another big positive and key for Newton through the current winter season is that he is further progressing and maturing physically, putting on weight to add to his tall frame. Since meeting Newton in person I have since continued to speak of him as an NBA small forward playing baseball. He appears at this time to continue to spend the majority of his time training and practicing at the shortstop position. For the past 2 years I have wondered openly about the option of transitioning him to the outfield.  At this time that has not been done. Perhaps it can still be an option. Perhaps it also is based upon overall offensive progress and maturity first to help with confidence.
Another young talented toolsy athlete not well known in mainstream prospect followers but among bloggers and prospect gurus is 20 year old Jaylen Palmer. Palmer remains a young projectible athlete who unfortunately has not played in a pro game since turning age 19 during the 2019 season playing for the Kingsport Mets as one of the younger players in the league. By recent accounts it sounds as if, for now, Palmer remains yet another talented player in the organization getting time at third base.  One potential option based upon ability and willingness I am told is outfield. Both third base and outfield is already becoming crowded with young prospects, but this could become a big opportunity for Palmer who I am told, as with Newton, has spent the lost season further growing into his frame and looking really well overall. Based on potential and athleticism, I have to continue to respect my reports and sources that say Palmer can be a strong candidate for top 20 organizational ranking status beyond 2021.
As far as prospects closest to majors I have to finish by continuing to highlight the most underrated one in the group for years. Power pitcher Marcel Renteria continues beyond the radar of all Mets top 30 rankings. Renteria has spent the lost season making all necessary secondary pitch adjustments to go with a fastball that reaches 96-99 MPH. Beyond the rankings, Renteria has the potential to be part of the new wave, day and age of baseball as far as relievers with multiple pitches that consistently go multiple innings. Based on lost season and innings not logged at the appropriate levels, I will at this time assume Renteria begins 2021 in AA and looks for a promotion to AAA. Still a long way to go for him as well as time itself and what can change from now through April of next year. Perhaps a 2021 major league debut is not out of the question. So many factors to consider including what to think of performance and game action only against multiple level fellow prospects heading into 2021. However the potential is there, and Renteria has the respect of multiple teammates who have raved about his power arm since day one.

Cubs! :)
Of all time: Andre Dawson. The Hawk was my first favorite Cub. The first time I went to Wrigley Field as a child we were in right field next to the Hawk and I was so happy. And my brother and I collected baseball cards and my brother had this book of addresses for all the baseball players so you could send them a card to sign. You’d include a self-addressed stamped envelope and hope for the best. The return rate was maybe 10% signed. 25% would send you your card back and say “well sign if it if you pay 20 bucks and join my fan club.” Most of the time you’d get no reply. Well, my two favorite players were Andre Dawson and Mark McGwire (when he was on the A’s, NOT THE CARDS). I sent out my cards to both. McGwire asked me for 20 bucks to join his fan club. Andre sent me back my card signed with a piece of paper saying that if I was so inclined, please make a donation to a charity that fought sickle cell anemia. He didn’t demand money for himself, he gave a kid his autograph and gave a shout out to a good cause. I sent five dollars to the charity, my own money (we were poor ok lol). McGwire was canceled. My love for the Hawk was cemented forever. Now the Hawk is still a beloved legend and McGwire is not only know primarily for being a cardinal but also for being a CHEATER CHEATER PUMPKIN EATER CHEATER MCCHEATERSON. Fuck the Cardinals. :)
Current: Anthony Rizzo. He is the face of this era, he is the leader, he is the presence in the locker room that I think matters the most. Jose Fernandez kind of reminded me of Rizzo, in that when he was in the ballpark, he acted like a little boy playing, not a man working. That sort of infectious joy and natural charisma is what this game needs. No he doesn’t have Mike Trout’s or Kris Bryant’s WAR, but he’s a stellar player who brings real joy to his game. He even dances at the plate. He fields like the Platimun Glover he is, his homeruns soar majestically, his chubb is adorable, he’s always smiling and laughing and sometimes goofing with other players, on his team,on the opposing team. He’s the guy I want up to bat in the clutch. And then he’s like Mr. Charity outside of baseball, always raising money for pediatric cancer and he has a whole room named after him at the chidlren’s hospital in Chicago which he visits all the time when he’s in town, and the room is like a fun playroom. He survived cancer and is now one of the best in the game I mean! As a sick person I look at him and I’m so happy he’s doing so well.
All-time thirsty fave: y'all, you don’t even know the crush I had on Mark Grace in my tween years. he was my Harry Styles.

Minor League Preview : Low-A Charleston
Charleston is always one of the hardest rosters to predict because so much changes in Spring Training. There are injuries, people show up to camp either in great shape or totally out of shape. Players either gain or lose traction based on their Spring Training performance. This year, there is another wrench as well. The Yankees are rumored to be planning to piggy back starters. They have gone as far as to say they are not opposed to piggy backing all five starters. That would mean 10 starters for one team. This is wildly exciting.
Anyway, here is my best guess assuming a traditional roster. Since there may be as many as five piggy backers, I will go ahead and predict who those guys would be as well.
C Anthony Seigler – Seigler held his own in his first taste of professional baseball as a teenager. The Yankees even put his feet to the fire and moved him up a level to Pulaski after his first 12 games. He struggled there, but this should allow him to hit the ground running in 2019. He finished his first professional season with a .266/.379/.342/.721 line, including one homerun and three doubles. Seigler is an excellent contact hitter, a solid defensive backstop in every way, and a tremendous athlete. The Yankees feel he will develop above average power as well. He has the potential to be a special player.
C Josh Breaux – While Seigler held his own in the rookie leagues, Breaux was busy holding his own in Staten Island. Breaux is more advanced offensively and has more power potential. Defense, on the other hand, is not his strong suit. He will have to work hard to remain behind the dish, although by all accounts he is already an average catcher and has a cannon for an arm. He finished with a .269/.289/.352/.641 line in 2018.
1B Mickey Gasper – He is bound to be a fan favorite because of his name, his height (5-foot-10), and his position. Aside from that though, he packs a punch. Gasper hit .257/.393/.493/.886 with nine homeruns and six doubles in just 43 games in Pulaski. He was the 27th round pick in 2018. Clearly he has the patience and polish to play in Charleston, but he’s the type of player who has the potential to remain in the system for a long time given his power and patience combo. He reminds my of an even smaller Mike Ford.
2B Ezequiel Duran – Compared to the hype leading up to the season, Duran’s season was disappointing last year. He finished with a .201/.251/.311/.562 line with four homeruns, eight doubles, and two triples in 53 games. All of the things that made him a hyped prospect are still true though. He has speed, power, exit velocity, and ability to barrel the baseball. Duran can play defense at second to boot. If he makes the team with Charleston he could make a splash this year.
SS Oswald Peraza – Peraza is an excellent fielder at SS and has all the tools in place to be a high average hitter. He’s a bit on the light hitting side, but scouts believe he may develop modest homerun power in the future. He played in Pulaski this past year and held his own, hitting .250/.333/.321/.655 with one homerun, three doubles, and two triples in 36 games. He struck out 41 times in 36 games. If he starts in Charleston, he too could be in for a breakout season.
3B Nelson Gomez – The biggest change between 2017 and 2018 for Gomez was his attitude. He showed up to camp mature and had done some work on his body in the offseason. While he still struggled to hit for average, the power is still legit. Gomez hit .213/.289/.425/.714 with 11 homeruns and 14 doubles in 58 games for Pulaski. Word on the street is that he went from having a poor work ethic to one of the best in the system, completely transforming his body this offseason. He also allegedly looked fantastic at instructs, both offensively and defensively. If all of this is true, Gomez could be in for a breakout in 2019. I won’t hold my breath, but the tools are still there to dream on.
LF/CF Antonio Cabello – Initially signed as a catcher, the Yankees converted Cabello to centerfield due to his athleticism and the fact that his bat was so polished that they wanted to be able to advance him rapidly and let him hit. The results, so far, have been fantastic. He hit .308/.427/.522/.949 with five homeruns, nine doubles, and five triples in 46 games. He also stole 10 bases. The Yankees found a good one with Cabello. He should start in Charleston in 2019 and there’s a good chance he plays well enough to put himself in the top 100 prospect category.
CF Everson Pereira – Speaking of top 100 prospects, Pereira held his own as a 17-year-old in Pulaski, with a .263/.322/.389/.712 quad slash and three homeruns, eight doubles, and two triples in 41 games. He struck out more than you would expect, with 60 K, but it was a successful season for him. It was his first one under the lights and he was successful. Pereira is a 5-tool athlete and has a good head on his shoulders.
RF Canaan Smith – Reports out of Spring Training last year were that Canaan Smith was primed for a breakout. That never quite happened, and Smith ended up in Staten Island with a .191/.281/.316/.596 line, and just three homeruns, eight doubles, and one triple in 45 games. This line was not at all indicative of what Canaan is capable of though. A fourth-round pick in 2017, Smith has serious power and much more hit-ability than he showed in 2018. I don’t know whether he will have a breakout season in 2019, but I am certain it will be a much better season than last year for Smith. If he starts hitting his potential though, 20 homeruns are within his reach.
DH Miguel Flames – Flames is another one of the 2014 international signings whose talent has still not materialized. Last year he had a .272/.295/.359/.653 line with one homerun and five doubles in 30 games. In terms of his bat, it is now time for him to put up some numbers. He’s 21-years-old and his bat is really his only carrying tool. If he doesn’t start to swing it well, he’s going to quickly become a forgotten man.
INF Jesus Bastidas – Bastidas is a slick fielding smallish kid who the Yankees believe will eventually develop a good hit tool. For now, he has struggled to do that. He hit .246/.313/.298/.611 in Staten Island last year. His fielding skills will allow him to continue to move up through the system, but he will have to develop with the bat if he ever wants to be taken seriously as a prospect.
INF Eduardo Torrealba – everything that you can say about Bastidas goes double for Torrealba. The fielding, the light hitting, and the need to improve the bat to be taken seriously all apply. Torrealba hit .236/.295/.298/.593 in Staten Island last year with 11 doubles and a triple.
3B/1B Andres Chaparro – The one thing Chaparro has shown in his career is moderate power. Other than that, he has not been able to make enough hard contact. He hit .191/.249/.348/.597 with seven homeruns and 11 doubles in 60 games in 2018. He will have to do better than that to earn playing time with Charleston.
1B/3B Eric Wagaman – The Yankees took Wagaman in the 13th round in the 2017 draft. He hit the ground running in his first season and played well as a 19-year-old in Pulaski. In 2018 he stumbled in Staten Island. He hit just .194/.244/.333/.577 with five homeruns, 14 doubles, and one triple. Much like Chaparro, the power is there but he needs work on his hitting. I have him listed in the Charleston preview, but there’s a good chance he ends up back in Staten Island for more seasoning.
OF Evan Alexander – Alexander had his best season yet in Pulaski in 2018. He hit .257/.382/.456/.838 with five homeruns, one double, and nine triples. He also stole 11 bases. The Yankees picked Alexander out of high school in the 19th round in 2016. Alexander is an athletic outfielder with all kinds of tools. As he physically matures there’s a chance he could put all of those tools together one of these years and take a big leap forward.
OF Frederick Cuevas – Cuevas had an opportunity to play in Charleston last season and had a disappointing season. He was ultimately demoted and played the rest of his time in Staten Island, where he was great in 18 games. With the talent coming to Charleston this year he may have missed his window now. It’s going to be tough to find at bats with the players you see above potentially playing in front of him. It’s gonna take a big breakout for Cuevas to carve his way back into the prospect picture. He’s not done yet though.
OF Juan De Leon – De Leon is another one of these 2014 international signings with tremendous tools that have not clicked yet. He did have his best season yet as a pro in 2018 though. He finished with a .243/.339/.438/.777 quad slash with five homeruns, nine doubles, and two triples in 43 games for Pulaski. He also stole six bases. He is still striking out way too much, but this was a big step forward for him in his career. He is now 21-years-old though, and if he doesn’t start producing in the long season leagues he will soon be forgotten. 2019 very well may be his last chance, and much like Cuevas the at bats are not going to be easy to come by.
SP Roansy Contreras – He’s the early candidate for the biggest breakout player of the 2019 season for the Yankees’ farm system. Contreras threw 57.1 innings last season, and had a 2.67 ERA and 54 K : 18 BB. He touches 96-97 mph with his fastball already and has a solid curveball with a progressing changeup. There’s not much to dislike about this kid, and the Yankees are really high on him. If I could only pick one kid on the farm to be top 100 by next year, it would be him.
SP Glenn Otto – He’s a big kid who throws hard and has a devastating curveball. The Yankees drafted him with a plan to teach him a changeup. If he can do that, the floor of a middle reliever with the ceiling of a shutdown reliever becomes the floor of a 5th starter and the ceiling of a mid-rotation starter. Last year he suffered a blood clot in his arm at the beginning of the season. He could be a breakout guy this year as well.
SP Harold Cortijo – He has rapidly progressed since being drafted and increased his stock significantly. He had a 2.63 ERA and 60 K : 12 BB in 51.1 innings in 2018. Cortijo sits 93-95 mph and even got as high as 97 mph in 2018. He also has a dominant changeup and a nice, developing breaking ball. He is already starting to make noise, but if he continues to see this level of improvement, he could even start to approach elite prospect territory.
SP Frank German – German was drafted in the 4th round in 2018 and subsequently had a bump in velocity. He was a low 90’s guy, and now he is a mid-90’s guy. He also has a curveball and a changeup. He pitched well in Staten Island last year, with a 1.65 ERA in 27.1 innings. He also had 38 K : 5 BB. Another great draft find for the Yankees.
SP Tanner Myatt – When the Yankees drafted Myatt, he was already a power pitcher who could hit 100 mph. Unfortunately, he also had trouble with control and not much in the way of secondary pitches. The Yankees tightened up his curveball at instructs and he was making guys look silly. If the Yankees can get him to develop a changeup too, he would have ace potential. That’s a big if though because his long limbs might make mastering multiple pitches a difficult task. Worst case scenario, he already has the necessary ingredients to be a shutdown reliever.
RP/Piggyback Shawn Semple – Semple has a low-90’s fastball, a curveball, and a changeup. He pitched well in 61 innings last year. He finished with a 2.95 ERA and 62 K : 14 BB in 61 innings. It’s going to be tough to find innings as a starter for him with all the talent in High-A and Charleston. He could find himself in a piggyback role with either team, or maybe will be moved strictly to relief where he can sell out for more velocity. If he is sent to the bullpen, I’d expect him to move quickly with his stuff. He was a great pick for the Yankees in the 11th round. He’s one of these guys who could show up to camp having made some improvements and surprise everyone by stealing a spot in the rotation.
RP/Piggyback Jio Orozco – He had a down year in 2018, and the stuff is not coming around like the Yankees had hoped. He had a 4.5 ERA and 36 K : 13 BB in 46 innings in Low-A. Orozco throws a 92-95 mph sinking fastball, a curveball, and a changeup. If he finds the right adjustments, he’s another one who could steal a spot in the rotation. If not, he’s a great candidate to go to the bullpen where he could sell out for more velocity and focus on two pitches to perfect.
RP/Piggyback Nolan Martinez – Martinez could end up in the rotation, as one of the piggy back starters, or in the bullpen. There’s really no telling. The reason for this is because he has low-90’s velocity that everyone thinks is going to improve over time. He already has two plus secondary pitches to go along with it, and track record of success in 2018. He had a 2.72 ERA and 39 K : 22 BB in 56.1 innings. When you’re competing against the likes of the competition above, it’s tough to predict what will happen with him. He belongs in the rotation conversation but it all depends on how he shows up to camp.
RP/Piggyback Rodney Hutchinson – Hutchinson was the 6th round pick for the Yankees last year. He is apparently a power pitcher with excellent spin rates to his breaking pitches. He went the opposite direction as Frank German after being drafted, with his velocity dipping. His performance did not dip though. He had a 1.97 ERA and 31 K : 6 BB in 32 innings. Where Hutchison begins 2019 totally depends on how he shows up to camp. He could be anywhere from High-A Tampa as a starter or piggy back to Extended Spring training to work on his mechanics. He has a starter’s repertoire, so I’d be surprised to see him as strictly a bullpen arm. Wherever he goes, he is a polished college starter who should be successful and durable.
RP/Piggyback Miguel Yajure – Yajure is a control first pitcher who has developed some serious stuff to go along with it. For now he sits 92-95 mph and has a curveball and changeup. He too could be anywhere from High-A Tampa SP/Piggy back to Extended Spring Training. He had a 3.9 ERA with 56 K : 15 BB in 64.2 innings last year in Low-A.
Piggyback/Staten Island SP Luis Gil – Gil could be in Charleston or Staten Island this year. Wherever he is, he is now a premium prospect and will most certainly start if he is healthy. Between Pulaski and Staten Island in 2018, he had a 2.14 ERA and 61 K : 31 BB in 42 innings. He has a 94-97 mph fastball that hits 99 mph. He also has a power curveball and a changeup he is improving rapidly. The only thing preventing him from being a surefire starter at Charleston is that he will be on an innings restriction.
Piggyback/Staten Island SP Yoendrys Gomez – Gomez has a 93-95 mph fastball, curveball, and changeup. He has good control and is still just 18. He might have more left in the tank. He threw 47.2 innings and had 50 K : 22 BB with a 2.08 ERA between the DSL and GCL. He has the stuff to be in Charleston, but could go to Extended Spring Training and then Staten Island in order to build up his innings and arm strength. Wherever he goes, Gomez has breakout written all over him.
Piggyback/Staten Island SP Juan Then – Then had a nice year with the GCL Yankees, finishing with 42 K : 11 BB and a 2.7 ERA in 50 innings. He was frequently hitting mid-90’s and has a changeup that flashes plus and a curveball that comes and goes. Sounds like he could probably use more seasoning in Staten Island, but if he shows up to camp having improved, he could go straight to Charleston. He too would be on a strict innings limit though.
RP Daniel Bies – He’s a massive, 6-foot-8 7th round pick out of Gonzaga. Bies was successful in year one with 43 K : 7 BB and a 3.3 ERA in 30 innings. He has a mid-90’s fastball and an average curveball. At his size, it would be surprising if he wasn’t in the upper 90’s by the time he reaches the upper levels of the minors. Bies has the potential to be a shutdown reliever for the Yankees if he continues to get better.
RP Brooks Kriske – He has a mid-90’s fastball with questionable secondary pitches. Kriske has had major trouble staying healthy since being drafted. If he is healthy this year, he could get a shot at Charleston. Tough to predict what kind of performance the Yankees could get from him.
RP Garrett Mundell – It’s hard to envision Mundell being anything other than an organizational guy at this point, given that he was fantastic in Charleston in 2017 and still couldn’t earn a promotion to Tampa. In fact, when he showed up in 2018 he was demoted to Staten Island. It is possible this was due to an injury, especially given that his strikeout numbers were lower in Staten Island than they were in Charleston a year before. That said, he’s 26-years-old and hasn’t left the lower minors. He also does not have the mid-90’s stuff of the other Yankees relievers. He has an uphill climb going forward. In the meantime, Charleston will have an excellent performer on their hands who can lock down opponents and help the team win.
RP Ron Marinaccio – The Yankees drafted Marinaccio out of University of Delaware in 2017 and he has had mixed results. He can hit mid-90’s with his fastball but got hit around in Staten Island badly in 2018. If he continues to work hard and follows the Yankees development program he could make his way through the system.
RP Austin Gardner – The Yankees took Gardner in the 9th round of the 2017 draft. He was a senior sign and didn’t have much ceiling to him at the time. As far as I know, that has not changed. He has a 90 mph fastball but did manage to generate a ton of strikeouts last year, with 48 in 35.1 innings. At the very least he should be a useful piece for Charleston in 2019 who can help them win games. He is 6-foot-2 though, so it’s still possible he could add a couple of ticks to his velocity and become a legitimate prospect.
RP Aaron McGarity – He was virtually untouchable in Staten Island last year, with a 0.35 ERA and 32 K : 3 BB in 25.2 innings. McGarity was hitting mid-90’s with his fastball when he played in the Cape Cod League, but then suffered some injuries. If he can get back to that, perhaps the Yankees will have something here.

Thom Brennaman’s Stories
Start a game and allow the controller to remain idel. After a few minutes after they have announced the lineups and the starting pitcher, Thom Brennaman will start telling in-depth stories about baseball.
Easy Cards
Use the following trick to unlock all the cards in one or two games. Once you unlock the Cooperstown Legends and the Pixels, play as the Legends. You will find that within the fifth or sixth inning, every hit equals ten points and possibly more. Constantly hit homeruns and strike out the batters and you should have forty to fifty packs to open after the game. This is the easiest way to complete your card collection and unlock the cheats.
Easy Points In Trivia Mode
For easy points in any one of the three modes of trivia (classic, home run derby, and speed), when you get a wrong answer, do not continue to the next question. Instead, press B so that the game asks if you want to quit. Then, press B again to remain in the game. After you have done this, press A to go advance to the next question. As a result, the game will give you a single and not penalize you with an out. Note: In home run derby trivia, this method will give you a homerun instead of an out.
Easy Points
You can gain “points” for certain feats performed during a game. An easy way to get a lot of points is to throw a perfect game. This is worth 100 points. Switch controls every time the CPU is up at bat and intentionally strike out. This will get you points for 27 strikeouts, and for a perfect game. Repeat as many times as needed. To get more points in franchise mode to sign your free agents, during the off season either create a player and pick him up as a free agent or sign free agents and release them at the end of the season.
Hidden Commentary
While looking at the credits press A to hear commentary about the developer who is currently on the screen.
Cheat Menu
Press L at the controller selection screen to activate cheats that have been bought.
Better Franchise Or Expansion Mode Teams
Use trades to get rid of your older less talented players for slightly better players. Even if the CPU rejects your trade, keep trying repeatedly and it will usually eventually accept it. However, make the trade reasonable, such as a B- player for a B or B+ player. If the player you really want just does not seem to want to join your team, try trading for another player who is slightly better, then return to that player you want and try again. Do this every season to keep good young players.
Restore Pitcher’s Energy
In season, franchise or expansion mode, go to the DL, and put any pitcher on the 15 day DL. Then immediately take him back into your lineup. He will have recovered all of his energy.
Better Pitching
The best pitchers have a pitch called a “Slurve” (for example, Mark Burhele of the Chicago White Sox). Also try the “Dominate Curve” with Pedro.
Better Hitting
Immediately after the pitcher releases the ball, press Start. You will see where the ball is going and if it will be a strike or ball. Resume the game and move your batting cursor over it to get a nice powerful swing. Note: You do not need to press Start directly after the pitcher lets go of the ball — it just gives you more time to move your cursor after the game is resumed. Use the pause technique before batting. When you see where the ball is going, try your best to get the ball as close to the point of the contact triangle (the part closest to the batter, not the thick part of the triangle). You will usually get homeruns or at least doubles.
Control Homerun Replay
After hitting a homerun, a replay of it will be displayed. When you see your batter heading home from third base, press various buttons to see different camera angles.
Infinite Points
You can gain points for certain feats performed during a game. You can use these points to buy cards which unlock cheats, stadiums, jerseys, producers, and players. An easy way to get a lot of points is to throw a perfect game. This is worth 100 points. Switch controls every time the CPU is up at bat and intentionally strike out. This will get you points for 27 strikeouts, and for a perfect game. Repeat this as many times as needed to get an unlimited amount of points.
