Day 41- Film: Scaramouche

Actors: Stewart Granger, Eleanor Parker, Janet Leigh, Mel Ferrer 

Plot Summary: We follow the adventures of Andre Moreau in pre-revolutionary France as he searches out his biological father, runs from the law with revolutionary friend Phileppe, tries to avenge Phileppe’s death at the hands of the Marquis de Maynes, hides out as famous comedian Scaramouch, and woos two different women. 

My Rating (out of five stars): ***½ 

It took me awhile to really get into this movie, but once I did, I enjoyed it. It was the kind of light-hearted colorful historical epic you would expect from 1950s Hollywood. Flashy and splashy but not overly complex in terms of character or nuance. And certainly not overly concerned with historical accuracy! Some spoilers ahead. 

The Good: 

The fencing! The fencing! If there is one thing that elevates this film and makes it worth checking out, it’s the sword fighting. There’s lots of it, and it is all convincing and well-staged. (Except for the speed at which blood spurts out of people when they get slashed!) The actors all did pretty extensive training to learn how to make it realistic, and it shows. The sword fight at the end of the movie is the longest in Hollywood history, as far as I know. 

This kind of goes with the above, but I absolutely loved the fact that the long swordfight at the end of the film had no non-diegetic music. The only sounds we heard were the swishes and clangs the swords made, the gasps of the crowd watching them, and the grunts from the two men as they battled with each other. It heightened the drama so much for me. 

Mel Ferrer. He is one of my favorite actors of the time period. He’s so good at playing wounded sensitive brooding people! In this he was generally a bad guy, but I still loved him more than the actual hero! 

Eleanor Parker. I always think of her as the Baroness in The Sound of Music, but in this movie she really stole my heart. She was just so captivating to watch at every moment- she was by far the most interesting female character in the film. Her luscious long red hair looked great as well. It was wonderful to see a woman who didn’t have a short tightly styled 1950s poodle cut! 

I liked part of the ending. The fact that they didn’t kill the Marquis de Maynes made me really happy. I was dreading Mel Ferrer’s death and knew it must be coming. When he was spared, I was legitimately satisfied and relieved. It also made the end more interesting and unusual. 

Janet Leigh was better in this than I expected. Her character was pretty boring, though. 

The light-hearted vibe of the whole film. The film was just good fun, and it didn’t take itself too seriously. 

The bad: 

The incest? I know it ultimately wasn’t really incest because Granger and Leigh turned out not to be brother and sister. But when you spend almost the entire movie believing they are, it’s hard to turn off the disgust switch when they suddenly get married at the end! I just did not like it at all. 

Granger got a little grating after a while. Maybe some of the stories I’ve heard about what a difficult person he was bled into my opinion of his character, but I didn’t totally like him. He seemed to be trying too hard to be devil-may-care charming. He was certainly hot, though, if you like the hunk-of-man-meat type. 

Historical accuracy! Costumes were especially loosely authentic to say the least. But you don’t really expect a 1950s Hollywood epic to be especially historically accurate. 

The plot could be overly tangled at times, and it took awhile for me to fully get into it. 

And again, why did Granger have to marry Leigh?

Watch the impromptu Live Mukbang we did at Wildflour here hahaha. Sayang, we can’t see the live comments on the replay. But it was so much fun!

I brought Pancho to my ninang’s salon (Nimfa Ferrer Salon at Sekai Center, Greenhills) for the very first time. Until yesterday, I’m the only one who’s ever cut Pancho’s hair. I’ve been too scared because he would have uncontrollable sudden movements and I couldn’t handle it if he got hurt huhu. Thankfully, I’m more confident with his development and I know he is more able to control himself!

Kuya Edwin, I think, was a little nervous and he didn’t want any accidents so Pancho’s haircut ended up not as polished as we’d hoped haha!!! But it’s definitely a great start!! Also, Pancho had a stye yesterday and you can see it in the post-haircut picture. Cutie. It’s even much better today!!

I haven’t been on a treadmill in 6-7 years (I think)!! After my workout with Coach Andre of Fitnessmobil, he told me to run on the treadmill for ten minutes. Thankfully, walang ibang tao sa condo gym so early in the morning and I was able to remove my mask.

For the first 3 minutes, I was running at a speed of 8 (not suuuuper fast, but it was a run), and then I remembered Jim’s advice about interval running. I did 20 seconds at 4.5 speed and 40 seconds at 8 speed. Hindi ko napansin at all because I was watching Beyoncé’s Sweet Dreams music video —- my go-to treadmill song!!! Tapos Love On Top after! Woohoo.

Ten minutes isn’t amazing for most people, but for me, it’s crazy that I was able to do that after an intense workout! Cut to: sakit ng katawan ko today hahaha!!

Vito’s been potty-trained since he was 2, but we’ve been used to putting him in a diaper when we go out. On a whim, I put him in his boxers and took him to Kidzoona with me. His yaya — who stayed behind — was concerned and was like, “Baka maihi siya!” Sabi ko, “Okay lang. Kaya may extra clothes kami.”

He was playing for an hour and socializing with other kids (so cute). Suddenly, he looked at me and held my gaze. Even with his mask on, I could tell! I said “You need to big boy wiwi?” Of course he said no because he wanted to keep playing haha. I brought him to the restroom anyway and successfully peed!!! Oh I’m so proud!

As promised here is a list of all the Hot Vintage TV Men who have been submitted and passed our preliminary eligibility checks. There are a handful of guys on this list and one or two not on it that we are currently still debating on so reminder that this list is not final and subject to change.

Also in advance of the competition I'd like to remind anyone submitting propaganda for someone that starred in a show that aired only partially during our timeframe or was under 18 for a part of a shows filming, to please make sure you are only submitting propaganda that is from within our timeframe and when the actor was 18 years or older. This is also just good to keep in mind in general as several people submitted actors for shows that aren't eligible for our tournament either because it was outside our time period or in one case the actor was underaged for the entirety of the show (though many were eligible for other shows they were submitted for). We do our best to screen for these things but sometimes it's hard to tell or it’s a show we don't personally know well enough so we appreciate help from y'all letting us know if you do catch anything.

so I wanted to highlight who has made the Gorillaz what they really are...

these are not the Gorillaz:

I would argue that even Jamie Hewlett and Damon Albarn are not the Gorillaz.

from their very inception, the Gorillaz have been made possible by those who Albarn and Hewlett collaborate with. their unique and interesting sound is the result of a multitude of musicians working together.

Today the trial of Andre Camargo Aranha, accused of raping Mariana Ferrer at a party in 2018, was exposed. He was accused of guilty rape, which occurs when there is no intention to rape.

During the trial, the defendant's defense presented "sensual" photos of Mariana, taken when she worked as a professional model. Such photos served as proof that the act was consensual. Lawyer Cláudio Gastão da Rosa Filho also said that he would never have a daughter of Mariana's level.

The lawyer even rebuked Mariana when she was crying, saying it was a fake and fake cry. An upset Mariana asked the court respect, saying that not even the accused are treated the way she was being.

There is video, there is semen on the clothes, there was blood, there was enough evidence to conclude that it was a rape but even so the rapist was acquitted with the "guilty rape" ??? didn't you intend to rape? did he accidentally take her virginity? Did you destroy it forever without meaning to? Why does rape only happen when you are a poor black man?

That is to hurt all women, all women who have suffered such an act but the rapists were acquitted according to the lame excuse that the woman asked, the fault is never the victim's, only the rapist's.

I’ve been searching my library for awhile but I haven’t found any on the shelves, and I’m sorta desperate to find some, being Latina myself.
