Otter Creek Wilderness, designated by the Eastern Wilderness Act in 1975, was one of the first wilderness areas established in the state of West Virginia. While Dolly Sods and Spruce Knob are steadily loved to death by east-coast solitude seekers (try finding a parking spot on a fall weekend), the remote, verdant trails of Otter Creek remain comparatively quiet and uncrowded - one of those increasingly rare places in Mid-Atlantic region where true solitude is still possible. On Saturday, Blake and I had this special place - and its countless treasures - mostly to ourselves.

I honestly didn't know if I'd like this one when I started lol but I loved it. The ANGST WAS SO HEAVY AND SO GOOD. tw for annabeth not making it out of tarturus alive in this fic. PJO and Marvel/Shield mash up and honestly I'm just so down for badass Percy fics. Especially when we see him from another POV where he looks so scary but in his head he is the softest most traumatized boy. Percy is everything to me. Lol and I ship percabeth so hard so this was an outlier fic to me 😂 the blurb there is from the first story, I linked the whole series.

Denizens of the Marl,

My main focus was to introduce an early blooming species that I don’t know if I talked about ever. I usually miss my window to see this plant and for some reason I’ve never gotten close enough to photograph it properly, you can kinda see a gleam of light on the glandular hairs but not well enough to show structure.

Triantha glutinosa, blooms in early June in Ohio but can last till late June and in other states occurs in bogs in warm water conditions and blooms much later which is strange to me. I think this must be an adaptive phenotypical thing but you would expect it to be opposite and light blooming also seems to not be the culprit so I don’t know.  False Asphodel is another common name but I honestly prefer calling it sticky or glutinous false ashpodel. As a plant living in these nutrient poor super leached marl flats this plant is a carnivor, protease excretor glandular hair trap specifically, but strangely only on it’s flowering stem and not on it’s minute basal rosette. Opposite of most species that are carnivores most species try to keep traps as far from the flowers as possible which makes sense evolutionary. Glandular traps near an inflorescence seems strange for successful pollination. As it turns out this may be a seldomly pollinated species where most individuals in populations are ancient clones that have formed from rhizome spread overtime in these glacial refugium. The other thing that seems notable is many people studying these false ashpodels (Triantha spp.) run into the same morphology and phenology problems that I have, and have even come to contempt and discourse over specific populations and are evaluating them as part of a biological species complex. I agree on the T. occidentalis western split on all accounts but some of the minor disjunct probable splits seem more complex overall (Central Appalachian mountain populations (TN, VA, SC, GA)

I feel like I can’t stress the importance of this limestone marl and the unique opportunity of getting this close to these plants without any special camera. Though I do wish I had one to display the features properly. Most of the time if you are traversing a fen you have to find and identify petrified marl shelfs or surface travertines, or you are walking on old and ancient tussock clumps from what is usually Carex stricta. Im walking on a displaced gravel shelf with petrified marl and wouldn’t dare to walk off of it and disturb the easily motile banks of loose marl or the suspended marl sediment floating like quick sand. The plants here are fragile and the habitat is equally fragile with many state listed species that cant take damage. Everywhere in the high exposure areas of marl flats are these Drosera rotundifolia and the smooth rounded/heartshaped leaves of grass of parnassas, which is in bloom as I type. Parnassia glauca is so beautiful with it’s unique floral venation and Ill post more pics once again when I get to it. The farther you get from the flats the less exposure and with it comes the sedge meadow with Arnoglossum plantagineum, also known as fen plantain leaved indian plantain. The last few shots are associated with the fully scabrid moderate sized var. ,not species, Silphium terebinthinaceum var. pinnatifidum, which we only see in fens in Ohio and the Ice scoured dwarf willow, Salix myricoides, in all of it’s new leaf glory. Still not looking blue with white pubescent undersides just yet.

Its been really weird doing this lagged posting because these are not matched to the time I was there. Right now, I feel like I should be posting about white bottle gentian, prairie gentian ,fringed gentian or ,andrews bottle gentian and here I am mid June posts. Heck it’s also Spiranthes spp. season and paw paw shaking season rn, most people are smelling sulfur shelves and foraging chicken of the woods(same thing). Trying to catch up and doing documentation and having a place to post personal thoughts on this stuff.

Danielle Parkin: Dana being the goddaughter of Dylan’s mother and close in age, the two of them were thick as thieves growing up. Neither of them being interested in pursuing their families’ Quidditch legacy, their friendship deepened until it gradually began to change. Dylan tried to deny his feelings for Dana for the longest time, but couldn’t lie to himself forever. Admitting the truth to Dana was one of the few times Dylan was actually afraid of something (and not only because Dana screamed at him during that particular conversation).

Phil Baker, Jonathan King, Lachlan Murray: @flareshogwarts @whatwouldvalerydo @kc-and-co What Dylan loves about his friends is how all of them are their own crowd, in a way. Jonathan needs to figure himself out, the Chudley Cannons will win the Quidditch League before Lachlan remembers a name and Phil… well, Phil is Phil. With all of them being rather calm and relaxed personalities (safe for Phil on energy drinks), Dylan has found his favourite people.

Patrick Hopper-Lee, Nick Willows: @thatravenpuffwitch @that-scouse-wizard Not only do Pat and Nick share Dylan’s love for music and the little rock band they have together, but all of their second - or biggest - passions are magical creatures of all forms and sizes. These three can mostly be found outside, tending to the CoMC creatures or helping with menial tasks around the grounds.

Dante Lopez Briarwood: @the-al-chemist What Dylan loves most about Dante is how relaxed and laid-back he is. He is a person Dylan really enjoys spending his time with, may it be making music in their band, drinking together, or just everyone minding their own business without annoying the other. What Dylan likes least about Dante is his involvement with his sister, but then again, Reva really could have done worse. 

Saffron Summers: @the-al-chemist Dylan didn’t choose to be friends with Saffron. If asked, he still couldn’t say how it exactly happened aside from rescuing her pet bunny Gavin from becoming a snack. In her gratitude, Saffron adopted Dylan and doesn’t get tired of supplying him with spooks when she turns up in his dorm, crystals, and vegan cakes.

Rylie Hopper-Lee: @thatravenpuffwitch Rylie is one of Dylan’s closest friends and favourite partner in class. He enjoys that she is down to Earth and fuss-free, and he was just a tiny bit star-struck when he learned who her father was. The one thing he will never understand about Rylie, however, is her very questionable taste in men.

Rory McTavish: @the-al-chemist Dylan is convinced that Rory McTavish was created to make his life harder just for the sake of it. He believes Rory to be an airheaded prick, while Rory is sure that poor Dylan really only needs to let his hair down a little. In truth, these two aren’t as different from each other as they like to think, and wouldn’t make the worst of friends - something their girlfriends are intent to prove further down the line. 

Darwin, the Tortoise: Dylan and Dana’s pet tortoise Darwin love the same person with all of their heart - and aren’t too fond of the other stealing her attention. Darwin bites and Dylan threatens to lock him up in a drawer for good, but secretly, they kinda like each other. A little, anyway.

Notes on the actors: To cover the large time span, there will be lots of aging up (and sometimes down) of the adult actors; at least two sets of actors for all child characters; the same actor for young Ben and young David in flashbacks, as well as the same actor for adult David, and Maurice and the doctor in flashbacks

Filming locations: For outside shots, in the Beaulieu Valley and Buckler’s Hard, perhaps parts of the New Forest for the woods; ideally Harewood House in Hampshire for Damerosehay, if that’s not possible then any houses that really suit Damerosehay and the Herb of Grace; for inside sets, partly real houses that suit the descriptions, partly sets that really capture the important details, such as the Ship-Overmantel and the Outstretched Arms.

Of importance: Make it as truthful to the books as possible, not leaving out any “difficult” parts, including the spiritual and almost magical occurences; the references and poetry; the fact that David and Nadine not getting together being a GOOD ending for the first part; make it neither soap-y, nor melodramatic, nor preachy, but also DON’T remove any of the Christian elements; don’t make Lucilla a “sassy matriarch” type, don’t show her as better or worse than she is. LOTS of nature. LOTS of screentime for the kids (not aged up) and the dogs.

Other ideas: Maybe show some hints of later important characters earlier on – a teenage Sally falling asleep on her father’s shoulder in the theatre before David comes on stage; David and Lucilla seeing a famous Jewish pianist; etc., etc.

Medical Doctor Attempts to Make Penicillin | Outlander Makes

CLAIRE: Hey everyone, I’m Claire, we’re on Fraser’s Ridge and today we’re making .... penicillin!

PART ONE: WHAT IS PENICILLIN?

CLAIRE: Penicillin has been on my list for Outlander Makes for a very long time, almost since the beginning. It’s one of my favorite medicines. I just love that it can kill bacteria and save lives. It has that unique property of being made from mold, and I think it will be a cool learning opportunity for me because I just love penicillin.

Penicillin is effective against staphylococci and streptococci bacteria, some of the most common bacterial infections seen on the Ridge. It was the first modern antibiotic, which I suppose is relative. But penicillin itself comes from a secretion of molds in the genus Penicillium.

I can’t believe how much Outlander Makes makes me think about my university science classes.

It’s time for my favorite part: reading the ingredients. And wow, this is a short list: benzylpenicillin.

Time to go do some research. All of which is stored in my brain because it’s 1771 and penicillin won’t be officially discovered for 157 years.

Anyways, molds have been used to fight infections since ancient times. There’s evidence ancient peoples in Egypt, Greece and India used certain fungi and molds in their medicine, according to my Uncle Lamb’s research. But penicillin as I know it, in the future, was first discovered in a bread mold in 1928 by a Scot named Andrew Flemming, but then it wouldn’t be used in human medicine until 1942.

So, I think I’m going to start with bread. But the mold spores are just in the air, and there’s no reason another food couldn’t be a growing medium. So we’ll just have to see what works best. I’m excited. I think this is going to work.

PART TWO: HOW DO YOU MAKE PENICILLIN?

CLAIRE: I’ve got a whole bunch of extra bread, so I’m going to tear it up and leave it out and see what it grows. Marsali is also out collecting food scraps from the other settlers, things destined for the pig trough, that we’ll test as well.

I’m tempted to put my samples under glass cloches to keep mice and bugs and other pests out, but I’m concerned that they will prevent mold spores in the air from getting to the bread, so we’re going to try both.

MRS. BUG: She’s gone mad, she has. Up all night baking more bread than the Lord when he fed the multitudes with the loaves and fishes.

BRIANA: Woah. You’re not planning to eat all that, are you?

CLAIRE: No, I’m going to let it go moldy.

MRS. BUG: What a terrible waste.

BRIANA: Please tell me you’re being sarcastic.

CLAIRE: What, me? Never. I’m making penicillin.

BRIANA: Then Mrs. Bug is right, you have lost your mind. You can’t do that.

CLAIRE: Yes, I can. And not just with bread, we’re going to test other food scraps too. Then, we’ll find the right strain.

BRIANA: This is dangerous. What if it messes with some cosmic balance? Or breaks some rule of space and time? Isn’t this playing God?

CLAIRE: I change the future every time I save a life here. And now I’m going to do it even better. So, time, space, history be damned.

See, now all the bread is set up. Marsali will be back soon, and we’ll set up her scraps the same way, and then we wait.

THREE DAYS LATER

CLAIRE: It’s a little dark in here because I wanted to keep the samples out of the sun. The bread and other samples have been left to mold for three days, and now we’re going to check and see how it went. I’m in that delusionally optimistic headspace where I think this might work on the first try.

I’m looking for a blue-green mold, maybe with a white outer ring. I’ve got my microscope and candles ready, so I can examine the mold more closely. What I don’t want is Aspergillus, another type of mold that grows under similar conditions but is very toxic and instead of curing infections would actually … kill my patients faster. So, if we see any fuzzier molds that are green, gray or black, that would be bad.

So, on a few of these samples I very clearly lost the battle against ants and some mice. The ones under the cloches fared better, but there’s not yet anything that looks like mold yet. This is going to take longer than I thought.

In the meantime, I’m going to work on the incubation medium that I’ll use to make even more penicillin once we grow the mold — which, we absolutely will. And for that I need Jamie.

CLAIRE: I can, but could you just help out for the common good? And if you don’t want to kill a chicken you could go hunt something else, right?

JAMIE: Claire, what if you waste all this food and you don’t get your medicine?

CLAIRE: I want you to know I can accept zero criticism right now.

JAMIE: Then I’ll be back with some meat for your broth.

FOUR DAYS LATER

CLAIRE: It’s day three! Well, it’s been a week but it’s day three of work. No, there’s no curse. Stop trying to make a day three curse happen.

Jamie shot a goose, and Bree plucked it for me, and Mrs. Bug made it into this broth. I’ve got to check out our bread and food samples and see if any Penicillium molds have grown. And … there are a lot of molds here! Turns out more than one mold can grow on bread. I’m looking for the classic blue-green color, and there is more than just blue-green here. This pie crust did a little better — see the white outer ring, and there’s no black, like on this bread sample. This is promising.

If I remember my textbooks correctly, Penicillium will look like a stalk of wheat with a branched end under the microscope. If the end is more like a fuzzy ball, it’s the killer Aspergillus mold that I talked about earlier. I’m going to make slides and see if I can positively identify any of these as penicillin.

TWO HOURS LATER

CLAIRE: OK, I’m down to the last two slides, and so far it’s a big fat nothing.

ROGER: What is going well right now?

CLAIRE: Nothing. This whole thing is a disaster. If these don’t have the right mold, I’ve wasted this whole week and all this food and will have to start over.

ROGER: Oh.

CLAIRE: Say a prayer, Roger. And…. got them. I was right about the pie crust — that’s definitely a Penicillium colony growing. I love it when I’m good at stuff.

ROGER: We all knew you could do it.

CLAIRE: Bree thinks I’m breaking the time-space continuum, but there it is! That’s penicillin!

So, my next step is to prepare the incubation mediums. I’ve got the broth Mrs. Bug kindly prepared, and I’m going to strain it and then boil it. I also need to sterilize the bowls, so I’m boiling some water for that. And then I have these muslin cloths that I’ve also boiled and air dried as best as I could, which will keep things like insects, bugs, mice and other critters out. It’s nearly impossible to achieve true sterility in these conditions, but it’s important to try.

And then I’m going to use these confirmed Penicillium samples and use a sterilized knife to put them into the broth to incubate. The thing about penicillin is that the mold itself isn’t antibiotic, but the mold’s secretions, so that’s what I’m trying to produce and capture.

So, I’ll leave this to do its thing. We’ll check back in a few more days.

ONE DAY LATER

CLAIRE: WHAT DO YOU MEAN ONE OF THE CHILDREN GOT IN HERE AND KNOCKED OVER ONE OF THE BOWLS?

THREE DAYS LATER

CLAIRE: ADSO! GET AWAY FROM THERE! NO, STOP DRINKING IT!

JAMIE: Are you done with your experiment, Sassenach?

CLAIRE: Noooo. I can’t believe that you can’t sense right now that I am not in a good place.

JAMIE: Oh.

CLAIRE: I guess it’s time to check the remaining bowls and see how incubation went. Like with the bread and food samples, I’m looking for Penicillium’s distinctive blue-green coloring with a white ring around the outside. So, the first bowl: nope, that’s not it. See those hairy, green clumps that look like submerged sea beasts? It could be another mold, bacterium, or maybe a colonial alga, but it’s not at all what I’m looking for.

But this second one, yes, this looks promising. See the colony in there? Looks like Penicillium to me. And, it’s worked in two more of these bowls. Three out of six isn’t a terrible average, even if two of my bowls got canned.

I’m going to have to check under the microscope again to be sure, but I’m, like 98 percent sure that’s it. I’ll strain the broth once more, to get the solid mold parts out. It’s the mold’s secretions you want, not the mold itself.

JAMIE: So what you’ve got there is broth that the mold has pissed in, is that right?

CLAIRE: Well, if you insist on putting it that way, yes. This was so much work, and it’s so unsure. This is a huge advancement in medicine for this time. It was way easier to mix up gentian ointment, or to set up the beehives, but maybe it was less satisfying. Is it better to not work that hard and not be that satisfied or to work really hard and be exhausted and somewhat more satisfied? I don’t know. Basically, there’s no way to win.

PART THREE: HOW TO MAKE PENICILLIN

CLAIRE: Here’s how you make penicillin.

Tear up pie crust and other food scraps, including bread, and leave them out to mold under glass cloches for five to seven days, keeping the cultures out of direct sunlight and away from pests. When the food starts to mold, identify Penicillium by its coloring and then under a microscope, looking for the mold’s distinctive branching pattern. Use a sterilized knife to distribute samples of your Penicillium into sterilized bowls of strained and boiled broth that has been cooled. Cover with sterilized muslin cloths and leave to incubate for several days. To use, check that broth has grown more Penicillium mold, by both the mold’s coloring and by shape under magnification. Strain the mold out of the broth, and use it to treat infection.

One of the campers (this was a 3rd through 5th grade camp so they were all a pretty tough bunch) I was hanging out with told me that I was super cool (even more than the interns!) and the other campers chimed in to agree with him and that was the best I’ve ever felt in my life :’))

Lavender: What’s your favorite thing about yourself? 

Strangely enough, my nose! People say it’s a good nose, and I trust their opinion :o)

Lilac: What’s something you liked to do as a child? 

I really liked to find these little plants that I dubbed “shy plants” because if you touched them they would shy away and close up their leaves (I don’t actually know what they’re called cause we called them shy plants in vietnamese as well), and my mission was to try and touch one without making it shy away

Prairie Gentian: Who is someone you look up to? Describe them. 

I look up to a lot of people! If I had to chose one person from the top of my head right now, I’d say Princess Tiana! She works hard towards her goal everyday despite people telling her it’s not gonna happen, and eventually she reaches that goal because of her hard work. Also her down-to-Earth kind of mindset is pretty reassuring.

Primrose: Describe your ideal life. 

Ideal life is hard because a lot of lives are ideal (it just depends on the mood and time)! In a nonrealistic ideal life, I’d like to be a Hobbit in Middle Earth enjoying adventures on my own time and exploring the world. In a bit more realistic ideal life, I’d like to live in the Irish hillsides in a small town tending to my goats while still being able to provide for myself and for my parents who live close-by enough that I can take care of them. Also I want a pet pig named Pig and a white wire fox terrier named Minou that I am NOT ALLERGIC TO!

Jika ada negara yang paling banyak mengeluarkan syarikat kereta di dunia rasanya bolehlah diserahkan kepada United Kingdom. Daripada kereta penumpang seperti MG sehinggalah kepada kereta sport seperti McLaren.

Itulah nilai kepandaian rakyat dan industri berat di UK.

Ada syarikat yang dah bankrap, maju dan paling banyak sekali dibeli oleh syarikat asing. Ada juga syarikat yang telah lama senyap kemudian dihidupkan kembali.

Sehingga 2014 terdapat 35 buah syarikat kenderaan Britain masih aktif dan lebih daripada 500 syarikat yang sudah tidak beroperasi. 

Pernah dengar Lister Motor Company?

Jika tidak pernah bermakna jawapannya sama dengan penulis. Lister Cars diasaskan oleh Brian Lister di Cambridge, England pada tahun 1954.

Syarikat ini pada asalnya terlibat dalam sukan permotoran dengan mengeluarkan kereta lumba sendiri dan beberapa jenama lain sehinggalah dijual kepada Laurence Pearce pada tahun 1986. Selepas itu syarikat mengeluarkan varian kereta Jaguar yang diubahsuai dan kemudian kereta sport dan lumba sendiri iaitu Lister Storm.

Sekali lagi pada tahun 2013, Lister Cars bertukar tangan kepada pasangan ayah dan anak Andrew dan Lawrence Whittaker yang juga pemilik kereta Lister Knobbly.

Mereka menjenamakan semula syarikat kepada Lister Motor Company. Selepas memiliki syarikat, mereka mengeluarkan edisi khas Lister Knobbly Stirling Moss pada bulan Jun 2016.

Selepas berbulan-bulan tanpa khabar berita tentang model baharu, Lister akhirnya mengumumkan perancangan mereka iaitu sebuah Jaguar F Type yang dinaik taraf pada awal tahun ini.

Walaupun berpuluh tahun senyap tanpa model baharu, projek ini tetap mendapat sambutan. Lister sudah pun menerima beberapa tempahan dan tidak hairan kenapa. Model ini dikeluarkan dalam jumlah terhad iaitu 99 unit sahaja dengan kuasa enjin yang ditingkatkan kepada 666 bhp.

Model ini adalah yang paling pantas, berkuasa dan mewah pernah Lister keluarkan sejak penubuhannya 65 tahun lalu.

Model yang dinaiktaraf tidak lagi menggunakan nama Jaguar F Type tetapi dengan identiti sendiri iaitu Lister LFT-666.

Naiktaraf yang dilakukan begitu banyak di antaranya panel badan diperbuat daripada gentian karbon agar kereta lebih ringan dan aerodinamik. Kelengkapan baharu yang digantikan ialah bamper depan, splitter depan, diffuser belakang, lip spoiler belakang, arka roda lebar, gril rekaan baharu dan roda ringan dipadankan bersama tayar Michelin.

Dengan penukaran kelengkapan ini, Lister 666 menjadi lebih ringan dan kuat serta ciri-ciri aerodinamik lebih baik di jalan raya dan litar serta lebih laju berbanding model asal.

Lister turut mengubah semula suspensi dan beberapa peralatan dalam termasuk stereng dan rekaan kerusi. Lister 666 dikuasakan oleh enjin 5.0 liter V8 supercaj.

Tidak seperti model-model lain yang diumumkan awal tetapi produksi hanya berlaku sehingga setahun atau dua tahun kemudian, unit pertama Lister LFT-666 akan dihantar kepada pelangga pada 1 Oktober depan.

Selain daripada 99 unit terhad, Lister turut menawarkan pakej naiktaraf tayar dan kit badan untuk model Jaguar F-Type Standard kepada pelanggan di seluruh dunia. Pakej untuk logo Lister, bamper dan roda bermula daripada GBP 9,750 (RM 51,735).

Pakej untuk model asas Lister LFT-666 pula bermula daripada GBP 141,155 (RM 748,996).

A species darker blue on average than the light blue of Soap Wort Bottle Gentian. We can see that the variation in color means that that concept is useless in identifying this wetland specialist. Instead we can look at the lack of flowers along each node as our first priority in guides or keys to guide us to the correct choice(soap tends to just have blooms at apex), opposite leaves before the flower terminus occurs in both and then it becomes a classic dense rosette of opposite leaves. Andrew’s Closed Bottle Gentian has wider leaves with a more clear sessile connection. Soap Bottle Gentian are more lanceolate with a distinct center vein only. Both are glaberous, have round red to yellow stems, and both also grow in the same habitat. 

In the bottom right photograph you can really see the three veined fold occurring. In each photograph you can see that they get wider before the leaves connect sessile to the stem at node junctions.

The center bottom photograph is there to demonstrate the fact that in many cases the blue color will not stick out and the flowers can be difficult to see if you’re not paying attention.
