Android Pie 9: Fantastic Android Pie Features for your Mobile Phone

Google’s latest version Android Pie is jam-packed with amazing new features to lure the users. As Google believes that your mobile should be thoroughly yours, and should be able to adapt to your life, Android 9.0 Pie offers several new features powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI). Pie will be one of the biggest changes in the way Android looks and feels since the last few years. It offers a more colorful interface, various new movement animations, and rounded edges. Such additions are quality-of-life improvements and so, users should not expect any drastic changes to the way mobile is used.

A new amazing feature is App Actions built into the App Drawer. It suggests actions based on the users’ Smartphone habits. So, if you call your wife at the same time every day, a button would appear in the App Drawer that will automatically start a call with her. If you have earphones plugged in, App Actions may provide a link to save the playlist and users can save it with a few clicks.

A few other additions are more background-focused. Adaptive Brightness learns how you like the brightness in various surroundings, and automatically adjusts the mobile brightness to match your personal preferences. Adaptive Battery learns which apps and services you use, and provides maximum power to them, and also limits the power usage to the apps that are not used often.

Slices

Slices are an amazing improvement in Android 9 Pie that allows the developers to deliver useful actions for their application. For instance, if you search for Uber on your mobile, there will be an option to show you how far the nearest cars are. This unique feature isn’t available right now, but we can expect that in the later update.

More powerful lock screen

The lock screen in Android is becoming more powerful. In Android 9.0 Pie, the lock screen will show a lot of features and not just time, at least on Pixel phones. It also shows weather updates and upcoming calendar events, helping users get all the information at a simple glance.

Gesture navigation

Google has brought the biggest change to the traditional three buttons of home, back and overview. The new gesture navigation button occupies the same space, but the home button is now a pill-shaped one. Users can tap it to go home, flick it up to view the recently used applications, swipe upwards twice, or even pull it up further. You can even drag it to right to switch to the last application and drag and hold to cycle around the recently used apps. Back button still appears when required, but the overview button has been eliminated. The gestures aren’t activated by default. Settings > System > Gestures and choose the “Swipe up on Home button.”

Rotation suggestion

Though it is a small change, it is the most useful change. When you have your rotation lock turned on to prevent the screen rotation accidentally, and you turn your on phone intentionally, there would be a little button on the navigation bar. Tap the button to rotate the screen from landscape to portrait or vice versa.

Time on the left for screen notches

The time from top right of status bar has shifted to the top left in Android 9 Pie. It isn’t a dramatic change, but it makes some space for screen cutouts called “notches”, as seen on the Huawei P20 Pro or OnePlus 6.

Digital Wellbeing

Google’s anti-Smartphone addiction tools (known as “Digital Wellbeing” collectively) are presently in beta testing for various users. The Dashboard shows the time you spend on your mobile and in apps. App Timer is an awesome app that allows the users set time limits for different apps. For example: If your child spends a lot of time on YouTube, you can restrict the usage by using App Timer. Do Not Disturb (DND) function silences the visual and audible alerts on your phone.

Enhanced Security

Gone are the days when users allowed apps to access camera and microphones, and they could be used whenever they want. Android P blocks such apps that run in the background and restricts them from accessing camera and microphones. Sensors such as accelerometers and gyroscopes use continuous reporting mode and the same will be restricted so that they don’t receive any events. Android Pie also restricts access to call logs so that unauthorized access to information such as phone call records can be prevented. Contacts, WiFi location, and heart rate sensors also have such restrictions.

Notifications Control

Android Pie provides better control and reporting of the notifications. Users had to rely on third party apps for checking the notifications and this, sometimes, distracted the users. Now, with the Pie, users can built-in reporting feature. You will get an idea about the apps that misbehave and so, you take adequate actions.

The easier way to take screenshots

Android 9.0 brings an addition of the screenshot button on the power menu. The users won’t have to struggle with two buttons simultaneously for taking the screenshots. Taking screenshots will be a child’s play now with Android Pie.

How much does it cost?

Android 9 Pie is free updates all the eligible devices. Avoid paying for Android updates. So, if someone asks you to pay for updating your Android device, do not pay anything.

When can I get it?

As of now, Android Pie is available for the recent Google Pixel smartphones or the Essential Phone. Other Android users may have to wait for the notification and update their system for the latest version.

Smartphone manufacturers are working hard to make this latest update available for Android devices. The OnePlus 6 users will not have to wait much for the update. Samsung, Huawei, and other Android phone users may have to wait for a little to get this update on their smartphones. LATEST ANDROID VERSION FOR SMARTPHONES IN 2018

Before coming to the latest android version which is all set to release in 2018 we must know about the entire history of Android. We already know how obsessed Google is with its Android versions and constantly looking to improve with every new update they bring in.

HISTORY OF ANDROID VERSIONS

Now talking about the Android versions that have already been out there since 2008. We know how much Google has been obsessed with the names of those versions right from the very first version of Android. They have kept their names based on the desserts or sweet dishes which people usually have after their meal. It is now time to understand and learn in detail about all the previous versions of Android. Also, we will come back to the latest Android version, its probable features and the desirable names for it.

ANDROID 1.1

You will be surprised to know that unlike other Android versions, the very first version of Android did not have any official name, unlike all others. It was released in Feb 2009 and was called by its internal name “Petit Four”. This was developed at Google and the name was based on a French dessert.

ANDROID 1.5 CUPCAKE

This was the second official release of androids version and was named Android version 1.5 Cupcake. This version was released just after a month of the release of its first version. Some new features like uploading videos to YouTube, granting third-party apps, automatic screen rotate were included in this update. This version of Android was available with Samsung Galaxy phone which was the first one to have this update along with HTC hero smartphone.

ANDROID 1.6 DONUT

Then came the next Android system update which was released in September 2009 just 4 months after the release of Android version 1.5. The new features of this latest Android version included the support for carriers using the CDMA based networks. This feature allowed the carriers to sell the Android phones around the world. Other important features included toggling between camera, recorder, and gallery. Also, Donut included the power control widget using which WiFi, Bluetooth, and Gps could be managed in one place.

ANDROID 2.0-2.1 ECLAIR

Exactly after a year after the first version of Android was launched, Google launched Android version 2.0 in October 2009. This latest android version was named as Eclair. This was the first Android version that supported text to speech update and also live wallpapers, multiple accounts as well as Google Maps. The first Android phone that came with this update was the Motorola Droid. Along with these features, many new features and modifications were done to the previous android version.

ANDROID 2.2 FROYO

Again after a year of release of Android 2.0, another Android version was released named Android 2.2 Froyo. This Android version was released in May 2010. Several new features were added in this version of Android including WiFi mobile Hotspot, push notifications, Flash support and many more. The Nexus One Android smartphone was the first phone to receive this android version update.

ANDROID 2.3 GINGERBREAD

Just 3 months after the release of Android Froyo, Google launched another android version update named Android 2.3 Gingerbread in September 2010. In this version of Android, the OS received a refresh in the user interface. Also, NFC functions were enabled for the smartphones that had the required hardware. The first phone to have the Gingerbread update was the Nexus S that was co-developed by Google and Samsung. This is currently the oldest version that is still running on some Android devices and according to reports from Google, still, 0.6 percent of Android devices are using Android Gingerbread.

ANDROID 3.0 HONEYCOMB

This version of Android was a bit out of the box update than all the other updates because this OS was designed for only tablets and smartphones that had a larger display screen than the existing smartphones. This Android version was released in September 2011, along with the first Motorola Xoom tablet. The main reason behind developing this version was to enable specific features for the larger display devices other than the small-sized smartphones at that time and also to show its competitor Apple that it is in the race. But in the end, this proved to be an unnecessary version of Android.

ANDROID 4.0 ICE CREAM SANDWICH

Soon after the release of Android 3.0 i.e. Honeycomb, the next version came pretty soon that is in October 2011. This latest android version had many new features and advancements then its previous Android version. It combined the features of the tablet-oriented version of Android with the Gingerbread version. This was the first version that included favorites-tray on the home screen. Another mesmerizing feature was of the camera unlock using the owners face picture. Other features like swipe off to slide the notifications and monitoring WiFi usage data were also included in this version.

ANDROID 4.1-4.3 JELLY BEAN

The next version of Android which is considered one of the most popular versions of Android began its journey in June 2012. This was android version 4.1 and with this Google smartly released Android versions 4.2 and 4.3 under the same name in October 2012 and the next one in July 2013. Some of the new features included with this release included more content or action buttons, gave full support to Google’s Chrome browser which was included in Android 4.2. Google also launched the Nexus 7 tablet with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean pre-installed as a gift.

ANDROID 4.4 KitKat

The next Android version was released in September 2013 that is Android 4.4 KitKat. Though this version didn’t have that many new features from its previous version the story behind its name became more popular. Though it didn’t have new feature the only thing that helped Android to gain popularity in the android market was that this version of Android was optimized to run of smartphones that had as little as 512 MB of RAM. Due to this, many phone manufacturers were able to sell handsets with the latest Android version at very fairly cheap prices.

ANDROID 5.0 LOLLIPOP

Android version 5.0 Lollipop got in the major change in the layout of the Android OS and was released in the first fall of 2014. This version gave a paper like look to the user interface. The UI also got other changes like rich notifications for the launch screen, revamped notification bar and much more. Google also made other necessary updates in this version and released Android version 5.1 under these updates. Googles Nexus 6 smartphone and Nexus 9 tablet were the first devices to get this Android version.

ANDROID 6.0 MARSHMALLOW

The next Android version release was in the first fall of 2015 called the Android 6.0 Marshmallow. This Android update included new features like vertically scrolling app drawer, along with googles now on tap, native support for fingerprint biometric unlocking of a smartphone. Other features like USB type-C support, Android Pay and much more were included in this latest Android update. Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X smartphones along with the Pixel C tablet were the first devices to be launched with pre-installed Android 6.0 Marshmallow update.

ANDROID 7.0 NOUGAT

This version of Android got many new changes in the features since by this time many devices were launched with large screen displays. The Android 7.0 Nougat was launched in the first fall of 2016 with amazing new features like switching between apps, better multi-tasking functions,split-screen mode and much more. Google also made some changes behind the scenes like the introduction of the new JIT compiler to speed up the apps, enabled OEM’s. The Pixel and Pixel XL along with the LG V20 were the first smartphones to have launched with these Android updates.

ANDROID 8.0 OREO

Android 8.0 Oreo was launched in August 2017. This was the second time that Google chose the name that was already taken by Nabisco that is Oreo(earlier one being Eclair). Now talking about the features, so this android update got new features in the form of visual changes. The Settings menu was updated. New autofill API’s were introduced for the better management of password and fill data. As earlier, Android Oreo comes with its two own Pixel 2 models along with the android phones being released now in the market.

ANDROID P

And now talking about the next release of the latest android version which is all set to release in August 2018, many new features are going to be added with this update. Also, a preview of this update is available only with the Googles Pixel smartphones and will be officially launched for the other devices by August this year. Gesture-based navigation system:- The first and foremost change with android P will be the removal of the traditional navigation buttons. There will be an elongated button right at the center of the screen which will as your home button. You can tap on it to go Home or long press it to invoke Google Assistant.

Battery-saving features:- Android P will come with 3 new battery saving features that are App Standby buckets, Adaptive battery, and Adaptive brightness.

Keep quiet: Android Shush, new button combo:- Shush is a new gesture that automatically enables Do Not Disturb mode when you turn your phone screen-down on a flat surface. Calls and notifications from specified contacts can still come through, though.

Android Dashboard and App Timers:- Using Android Dashboard you will now be able to see how much time you spend on your phone. Android P also will have app timers using which you can set the timing for the usage of a certain app after which it won’t work.

Slices and app actions:- These will increase the user management with the already installed apps. We are putting the new beta on the phone now and will report our experiences in a new piece soon. Design A side by side comparison to the original Mi Mix 2 makes it pretty clear what has been added — a second lens adds telephoto and portrait capabilities to the shooting experience. Aside from that, much of the phone is still the same, right down to the ceramic body. The sleek backing is separated from the full screen front by a metal frame and looks very sleek in this black version and striking in the white version. While the previous version had special editions with a unibody ceramic design, that is the not the case here. The ceramic backing is still one of the most unique and eye-catching materials of any smartphone and Xiaomi continues to use it. It can be a little slippery at first, but after some time the heft and potential smudges make it easier to keep a secure grip. A form fitting and minimalist black case that slips on perfectly is included in the box, providing easy and tactile access to the button layout. Ceramic has become a Xiaomi calling card, and it continues to make their devices shine. As before, there are no buttons on the front due to the full screen experience, but the usual offerings — a volume rocker with a power button below it — are all on the right. Jumping down to the bottom, the little bezel that remains allows for not only the front facing camera (yes, it is still bottom mounted) but also the USB-C charging port and a single bottom speaker. There is no headphone jack on the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S. This is still Xiaomi’s best design, and ceramic goes a long way to keep what is ultimately familiar still great to look at. Just like before, it’s hard not to like the phone. Display Part of that good design is owed to the phone’s full screen display. Of course, the compromises of the Mi Mix 2 return in this mid-season update. The 6 inch 18:9 display is still a Full HD+ display, but it renders elements quite well, mostly due to the MIUI’s tighter use of space. Colors look a bit muted compared to some of the saturated displays out there, but it didn’t take away from any form of usage — from media to gaming to work. More enjoyable viewing experiences are out there, but the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S is no slouch — after all, just look at how much screen you get, especially since nothing cuts into the panel. The Mi Mix 2S doesn't have a notch, but the bottom front facing camera might be its own form of annoyance. I wish that the display got brighter in broad daylight. Even cranking the brightness to max didn’t seem to help very much with the sun baring down. The auto-brightness was also a bit hit or miss. I had to go into the quick settings to bring up the level in situations where auto should have already done it. MIUI still crowdsources its features from its robust forum community, and its newest addition is a feature Apple introduced with the iPhone X: full screen gestures. If you really want to open up the whole screen, you can make the softkey bar go away and simply use swipes from the edges of the screen to either to back, go home, or bring up recent apps. Personally, I am not a fan of these kinds of gestures, but I got used to them after a little while. What is annoying about this shift in navigation is how it clashes with other functions. Watching Youtube in landscape orientation makes swiping up for related videos hard to do because it might trigger the MIUI home button instead. In other apps, swiping from the sides to go back could cut into Material Design menus which are supposed to come from the left side. Without a home button to press and hold, I had to find other ways to get to Google Assistant. To its credit, Xiaomi bucks the notch trend with the Mi Mix line. A number of other phone makers centered front facing cameras at the top their phones, usually by carving a notch in the center of the screen. The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S keeps the front camera at the bottom, which is the only place where there’s any substantial bezel on the phone. This compromise is annoying on its own, so maybe the bottom bezel is just as bad an idea as the notch. Performance Where Xiaomi really gets things right is in the spec sheet, at least in terms of performance. The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S now sports the Snapdragon 845. The base model comes with 6GB of RAM and either 64 or 128GB of onboard storage. If you want to spend a little bit more, there is an 8GB RAM edition with a whopping 256GB of storage. This extra storage option softens the blow of having no microSD card slot, so heavy media or camera users have plenty of space to play with out of the box. I had no issues with any performance whatsoever. The phone worked just as fast as any current flagship phone should. A lot of media play took up the majority of my usage and I played a good amount of Fire Emblem Heroes without any stutters, issues, or problems. Even popping in and out of the camera was a smooth experience — if you recall the previous unit I was using had performance issues mainly with the camera — rest assured that my final review unit had accounted for all of that. Hardware This phone still has global bands, so it can be used anywhere outside of its core markets. There is little new to talk about with the hardware offerings, as the same connectivity bits and pieces from the original Mi Mix 2 remain. The phone speaker is noteworthy — it uses a small slit above the massive screen for a normal phone call experience instead of the bone conduction Xiaomi attempted in the very first Mi Mix. The phone also still uses the ultrasonic sensor to give the phone automatic screen deactivation when the device is near one’s face during calls. Where we took exception to the sound experience was with the speaker, which is still a single bottom mounted unit without any impressive tuning. Audio lacks body and is quiet compared to some of the far better experiences in competitors’ flagships. The Mix line already made it clear to its fanbase that the headphone jack is not a consideration, but it is still a sore point that an adapter is required for any wired headphones. Battery life is about the same between the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S and the Mi Mix 2. The Full HD+ resolution display helps the battery last a bit longer, it seems. In my somewhat heavy usage that was generally on Project Fi data and constantly playing either YouTube videos in the background or podcasts, the phone could easily get up to 5 hours of screen-on time, with a full work days of usage. Because of my typical level of usage, I did not get many instances of a day and a half but I am certain it is more than possible for more casual users. Xiaomi's own wireless charger is only $15! The phone now supports wireless charging, even with its ceramic backing. This is an exciting development not just for the phone specifically, but for the Mi ecosystem. After all, this facilitated the creation of a very affordable and simple wireless charging mat. It is priced at just 99 yuan (~$15) and supports pretty much any phone with wireless charging capabilities. It wouldn’t be surprising if this mat became as popular as other peripherals in Xiaomi’s catalog, like the Mi Band. Camera Aside from just adding a telephoto lens, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S also has a better sensor, which should lead to better overall quality. The main lens now has an f/1.8 aperture with pixels at 1.4 micron sizes. The zoom lens, on the other hand, is at f/2.4 aperture and has 1-micron sized pixels. Only the main shooter has OIS. Before we get into the main camera quality, let’s talk briefly about the front facing shooter and its positioning. This is the same placement as always, so I can’t add much on how inconvenient its location is. True, you can turn the phone over when in the main camera app and shoot selfies in a more conventional manner, but applications like Instagram would lead to upside down pictures. Of course, you can always take the pictures and import them into whatever platform you desire, but the bottom-mounted lens is still not good for live video or video calling. The pictures out of the front facing camera are decent but not particularly exciting. A depth effect mode can add background bokeh effects but it softens the overall photo. Activating this setting turns off HDR outright, however. The softening is also due to the beauty mode settings which are at a three (out of five) by default. Xiaomi’s beauty mode is still pretty aggressive — even my freckles disappeared from my face. No beauty mode Beauty mode 3/5 Beauty mode 5/5 The rear shooter provides the necessary tools for better portrait mode photos all around — namely, the telephoto lens. Using the two cameras together, the frame zooms in a little and is always detecting for a face. When it finds one it will add the depth effect to elements outside of the subject cutout. The cutout is still software based, which means the effect can sometimes mess up the lines. In terms of detail, the portrait mode shots are ultimately pleasing. The same can be said for most photos coming out of the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S. You may recall a vlog and photo journal of my time in Shanghai, shot entirely through the lenses of the Mi Mix 2S preview unit. The software has been updated since then, with fixes primarily focused on the camera app performance. While those problems have been remedied, the picture quality is still mostly represented in those previous photos. I was very impressed with the photos from Shanghai and continue to enjoy the pictures I captured using the final software since then. When shooting on auto, colors come out looking good without overdoing the saturation. Dynamic range could be a little bit better even when HDR tries its best to compensate for an uneven scene. Video capture is pretty detailed when the exposure is dialed in properly, as you may have noticed in mainly the low light footage of the Shanghai skyline from my photo journal post. Audio could be much better, however, as plenty of my videos exhibited a lack of clarity. Normal AI Food Normal AI Building The camera’s last addition is the AI engine, denoted by a simple AI icon on the top. When activated, it cycles through different modes depending on what is in the viewfinder: Flower for flower, building for building, person for portrait, and so on. Except for that last one, where we wish the auto AI would change the mode over to Portrait automatically. AI pictures didn’t seem very different from normal ones in those instances. For food and flower situations, however, it seemed like the camera’s main priority was brightening up the frame and increasing the saturation. I hardly felt like the AI mode was doing much more than that in most cases, which makes me think some more work has to be done on the software development of their engine. Pictures out of the phone already look pretty good so you won’t need even toggle AI on. It was a decent first attempt by Xiaomi but it needs to be fleshed out more in the future. The AI engine seems to require a bit more work, but at least pictures in general look good so you don't have to turn it on. Software The crowdsourced Android skin MIUI essentially gave Xiaomi its start. It retains a lot of the same elements and features as before, from a quick ball for floating navigation keys, a complete “second space” where a fresh user space can be created, and no app drawer, which means a bit of work has to be done to make the homescreens look clean. A new homescreen has also appeared to the left, called the Guide. It is a little bit like the OnePlus Shelf which allows adding app shortcuts. One widget gives quick access to a note taking area. It is a simple but welcome addition that doesn’t try too hard to flood the user with information, though we wouldn’t be surprised if that’s how it turns out. There is plenty more in the software settings that users can tweak. We promptly put quite a few Xiaomi-installed applications into their own folder for a cleaner interface. MIUI can do a lot. A lot of old issues with localization have been fixed — every element seems further refined and easy on the eyes. MIUI still won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. As the operating system carrying the Xiaomi experience, it does a fine job on top of Android Oreo. Though Xiaomi is strong in India and slowly popping up in Europe, plans for the U.S. seem inevitable but continue to be an ongoing internal discussion. For those in the U.S. that really want to get their hands on the phone? Your best bet will be to import the phone, which goes for around 3,299 yuan (~$520) — a great price considering its nearly $1000 competitors. We hope it can maintain prices like that if and when it ever come to the West. For now, we can look at the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S as a sign that Xiaomi isn’t lounging around — it is doubling down on the full screen experience. Even if it is a bit rough around the edges, the Mi Mix 2S is a top Xiaomi phone and a top device in the Asian market. If you are looking to upgrade, the camera alone makes the move worth it. Google I/O 2018 is this year’s edition of Google’s conference where developers from across the world are brought together to showcase the latest technology that Google is developing and as usual, it is not surprising at all when Google announced some new products, showcased the progress and improvement the company is making in some of its products.

In this year’s Google I/O, a lot of things were discussed like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning, Android, along with some focus on some of the products developed for the Android ecosystem, like Maps, Photos, Google News, Google Assistant and Google Lens. And here’s everything you need to know about the big announcements that were made.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Google just revealed at the event how the company has upgraded to TPU v3, the 3rd-generation TPUs (Tensor Processing Units) are liquid-cooled and much more powerful than the previous generation, which allows training and running models faster than ever. Google CEO Sundar Pichai talked a bit providing some excellent uses of AI, and tests that he and his team are conducting which will help facilitate medical attention and provide more time window for the doctors to be prepared for a patient, well in advance. He also explained, how with the help of AI, from a person’s retina model AI could detect various details like age, gender etc. along with alerts for possible medical situations. The use of AI won’t be just limited to medical science, but it will now be used in popular Google Products. For example, Google is making it easier to draft emails, with the help of AI where users will get suggestions based on context and they can just hit tab to fill the email with words, placed automatically. This new feature is called Smart Compose and it will be available in Gmail soon.

Google Photos Can Now Edit Images On Behalf Of You

The use of AI will now be more evident in Google Photos as well. There will be an option called as One-tap actions, and by using this, the user can enhance their photos or share them with friends automatically. or example, if a photo is captured in low lighting conditions, using the One-tap actions, Google Photos will brighten the image. That’s not all- With this new feature, one can make the subject pop out while keeping everything else in grayscale or this can be done in an opposite way as well and is great for bringing back memories as Photos will now let users turn black and white photos, into colorful images. With One-tap actions, users can also send photos of their friends who are in the photo itself to those friends only and the whole process is automatic, and faster them reading and understanding all these by reading these few lines. Though AI is one of the most emphasized topics at this year’s Google I/O, the use of Ai isn’t limited to these few things only. From finding a dogs picture in Google Photos to taking a perfect portrait selfie, where the camera captures everything but keeps the subject in focus and sharp, and perfectly blurs the background. Gmail uses AI to remind you to follow up or respond to messages that are older than two to three days, making sure that you haven’t missed any important emails. Google Translate can translate text on a sign or menu by holding the camera in front of it. Finding the right address is not a big deal as Google Maps has learned to read street names and addresses from billions of Street View images.

Google Assistant Gets Smarter & Better

Google Assistant is the ultimate smart assistant from Google that lets users do many things and get information using their voice. Google says that people ask about weather conditions is as many as 10,000 ways, so with improvements to the understanding of languages, you can speak naturally to your Google Assistant and it will know what you mean. Google has also put a lot of effort in making sure that the voice of the Google Assistant is natural and for that, thousands of hours of voice recordings were required, but now with AI and WaveNet technology from DeepMind, this process takes much lesser time, yielding the same brilliant natural sounding voice. Starting from today, you can choose from six new voices for your Google Assistant. John Legend, an American singer, songwriter and actor will give his voice to the Google Assistant later this year!

Natural back-and-forth conversations are now possible and users no longer need to repeat ��Hey Google’ for each follow-up request. This is being called as Continued Conversations and will be rolling out in the next few weeks. The Google Assistant now can also understand many things said to it in one instance. Routines also get an overhaul as now users will be able to add Custom Routines, which allow them to create a Routine with any of the Google Assistant’s one million Actions. A visual makeover has also taken place and now Google Assistant will be able to provide a quick snapshot of the day, with suggestions based on the time of day, location and recent interactions with the Assistant. To provide a summary of tasks and list items, Google Keep will be integrated. Food pick-up and delivery services arrive at the Assistant and now users can order directly from Starbucks, Doordash and Applebee’s, in addition to existing partners like Dunkin’ Donuts and Domino’s.

Google Assistant will also be integrated with navigation in Google Maps later this summer and will help people drive without any distraction while sending text messages, playing music and podcasts, and getting information and all these can be done without leaving the navigation screen.

Android P Sneak Peak

Google has just shared some glimpses of what the next version of Android could look like and how it will enhance the user experience. First of all, with Android P, users will get a feature called Adaptive Battery which will prioritize the battery power for the apps and services that are used most. App Actions is a new feature that helps the user make the next move, in an easier way. For example, if you’re someone who enjoys music from Google Play, as soon as you plug in the headphones the phone will prompt to open the Play Music and resume the track. Android P also focuses on making navigation simpler with gestures on the home screen and it is based on simplicity. Just a home button is marked at the bottom of the display and navigation, works flawlessly with gestures.

A new Dashboard has been added, which provides insights like how you’re using the device, time spent in apps, the number of successful phone unlocks and the number of notifications. Also, to keep yourself away from the social media, you might like the App Timer which sets time limits on apps and will nudge you when you’re close to your limit and then gray out the icon to remind you of your goal. The new Do Not Disturb mode silences phone calls and notifications, along with notifications on the screen.

Dashboard, App Timer, Wind Down

Android P Beta is now available on Google Pixel. And due to Project Treble, the Android P Beta is now available on non-Google devices as well and the list includes Sony Xperia XZ2, Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S, Nokia 7 Plus, Oppo R15 Pro, Vivo X21, OnePlus 6, and Essential PH‑1.

Google Lens

Today at Google I/O, Google announced that Lens will now be available directly in the camera app on supported devices from LGE, Motorola, Xiaomi, Sony Mobile, HMD/Nokia, Transsion, TCL, OnePlus, BQ, Asus, and of course the Google Pixel. The Google Lens now has a better smart text selection, that connects the visible words with the answers and actions. Copying and pasting text from the real world is now possible and users can copy and paste anything, from food recipes to gift card codes or even Wi-Fi passwords.

Google Lens can now recognize words and provide suggestions easily. Also, Google Lens now works in real time. This is possible with state-of-the-art Machine Learning, using both on-device intelligence and cloud TPUs, to identify billions of words, phrases, places, and things in a split second. The new Google Lens will be rolling out in the next couple of weeks.

Google News Gets Redesigned

Google News is one of the oldest services from Google and in the last 15 years, many things have changed. Now, the new Google Maps is powered by AI and ML, so that users get the news that matters to them. Full Coverage is something that will help users find all the reports from different sources related to any particular headline. The Newsstand tab makes it easy to find and follow the favorite news sources and also, users can subscribe directly using Subscribe with Google platform (launched as a part of the Google News Initiative). This helps users get access to premium content, and it will work on all devices.

Google Maps Gets Better

The redesigned Explore tab in Google Maps will suggest interesting places nearby. Top trending lists like the Foodie List helps users find new restaurants based on information from local experts, Google’s algorithms, and trusted publishers like The Infatuation and others a ‘match’ is displayed which is basically a number that suggests how likely you are to enjoy a place and reasons explaining why. In this case, Machine Learning is used to generate the number based on factors like details of that business, the food and drink preferences you’ve selected in Google Maps, places you’ve been to, and whether you’ve rated a restaurant or added it to a list. Planning gets easier as with a long press on the places can create a shareable shortlist that your friends and family can add more places to and vote on.
