When I think about the quintessential sound of "post-punk" I still always look to Gang Of Four's first 2 studio albums Entertainment! (1979) and Solid Gold (1981). Scratchy, angular guitars played over throbbing groove-laden bass; urgent-yet-dancable drums underlying sardonic, art-school politico musings. Gang Of Four helped set the blueprint for a movement that influenced decades of musicians as far-reaching as Fugazi, R.E.M, Rage Against The Machine, Big Black and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, as well as a swarm of contemporary acts who have "revived" the genre a countless amount of times. “If it’s post-punk political funk you want, it doesn’t get any better than this. . Gang of Four, named after China’s Gang of Four of the Cultural Revolution in the late 60s-70s, wear their political left-learnings on their sleeve, their song lyrics dealing with the destructive failings of capitalism (Capital (It Fails Us Now) and To Hell With Poverty), feminism (It’s Her Factory), social resistance and sexual politics (Damaged Goods, At Home He’s A Tourist). . They’re a huge influence on all post-punk funk bands; scratch under the surface of any of those early 2000s new new wave bands and the post-punk revivalists such as Franz Ferdinand, Futureheads, The Rapture, Bloc Party etc and you’ll find the Gang of Four’s tight bass, Andy Gill’s “scratch and kill guitar” (Allmusic.com), the funky drumming, and Jon King’s deadpan and Situationist lyrics. . This 1990 compilation of 20 tracks provides a great overview of the band’s best output, including six songs from their brilliant debut Entertainment! There are many excellent songs on here, classics like At Home He’s A Tourist and Damaged Goods. But one of my favourites is wonderfully inventive Anthrax where the guitar conjures up a soundscape of nuclear holocaust proportions, whilst Jon King deadpans that he feels “like a beetle on its back / and there’s no way for me to get up.” The absurdist horror of it reminds me of Kafka’s Metamorphosis. It’s songs like this that demonstrate that Gang of Four were so much more than just ‘post-punk. They took its rare essence – the adrenaline and the attitude – and weren’t afraid to enhance the stance of resistance and make it arty.” .
