In 1843, Botanist Anna Atkins published the first book ever to be illustrated with photographs. Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions documented species of algae in ethereal, blue splendor. Its author was as pioneering as the book she published; Atkins is now widely recognized as the first female photographer. #annaatkins #inspiration #labyrinth #silktwill #bandana #blue #madeinfrance #fringe #luxury #silk #scarflover #foulardseason #foulardsoie #silkscarf #soie #foulardensoie #carreensoie (at Paris, France) https://www.instagram.com/p/CkqtJjaM-56/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Meet more notable women in plant biology during Women's History Month 2024.
Anna Atkins
One of the first female photographers was also a botanist. Although she did not attend college, Anna Atkins (16 March 1799 – 9 June 1871) received her scientific education from her chemist father John George Children. As an adult, she pursued her curiosity about plants by collecting and drying specimens of land plants and seaweed which she used to create educational and artistic “photograms” using cyanotype photographic paper. She self-published the book containing photographic illustrations, entitled “ Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions” in 1843. She was also elected as a member of the London Botanical Society.
Miriam Rothschild
Curiosity about nature and collecting came naturally to Miriam Rothschild ( 5 August 1908 – 20 January 2005)– after all she was the niece of the eccentric Lionel Walter Rothschild who created a natural history museum stuffed with specimens from around the world at Tring in the UK. Her long and eventful life included campaigning for the rights of animals, children, people with mental illness, and LGBTQ people as well as innovative scientific research on entomology, particularly chemical ecology and mimicry. Her botanical connection is her research on how Monarch butterfly larvae’s toxicity is derived from chemicals in the milkweed which they feed on.

"What is photography for? In what situations? In answer to whose desire to see?  To see what? In order to do what? When? Is it really about seeing something or about doing something else through a photograph?  What else?  Something with others or with ourselves?" - Lyle Rexer, "Ways of Waiting" We are happy to announce that our new monograph is finally available: "The World's First Photobook was Blue" 📘 Editors: @irastehmann, @themthemthemthem and @ibasho___gallery Writer: @lylerexer Designers: @studio_des_signes Printing house:@robstolk.amsterdam Thank you all! We wanted to create a book not about what we do or how we do it, but why we do it. A book without a beginning or and end, without a specific cover (that is why this book has three), and where the text talks about why we photograph and not about the images per se. The title is a nod to Anna Atkins, the binding a nod to Brassaï and the entire book is a homage to this deceptively simple but really complex medium which is photography.

🔷Vamos a divertirnos 😃 . . #jaimitude #cianotipia #cianotype #AnnaAtkins #cianotipos #photo #blue #colour #bleu #nature #design #cianotipias https://www.instagram.com/p/CRInSZ0BrT-/?utm_medium=tumblr

Happy birthday to the English botanist Anna Atkins, who was born today in 1799. As well as being considered by many to be the very first woman to create a photograph, her stunning 1843 book of algae cyanotypes is thought to be the very first book illustrated with photographic images. More on her life and her beautiful cyanotypes of algae on our site (click link in bio and search "atkins")⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ We've also got a wide selection of her images available to buy as prints in our online shop here (click link in bio and go to "shop").⠀⠀ .⠀⠀ .⠀⠀ .⠀⠀ .⠀⠀ #annaatkins #cyanotype #cyanotypes #sunprint #sunprints #algae #onthisday #otd #blue #photography https://www.instagram.com/p/B9zzsRJJ1MU/?igshid=1ky90nt2qp153

Anna Atkins (1799-1871) was an English photographer and botanist distinguished for her early use of photography in scientific studies. Born in Kent - England - and daughter of a scientist and Royal Society Fellow, Atkins had an early scientific education, which was quite unusual at a time when women were frequently excluded from the scientific world. Atkins became interested in botany and photography's evolving technology as a means of preserving her observations. She learned both “photogenic drawing” and the calotype method from William Henry Fox Talbot, but it was the work she developed with the cyanotype method of Herschel, that she’s best known for. Using this method, Atkins self-published the first photographically illustrated book ever — Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions. This book is a collection of plant life — particularly algae studies — truly represented in its original shape and size. This printing method enabled Anna to visually document plants and natural specimens in incredible detail. Anna Atkins’s pioneering work established photography as an accurate medium for scientific illustration.
